Marriage Not Dating Episode 4 Recap

I have to say that I really like how this show gives you just a snippet of something to start with. I know I’ve said this at some point before and I usually hate it, but with this series, it really pulls me in. This episode starts with a doozy of a situation. It’s Harabeoji’s Death Anniversary. Jang Mi is screaming at Ki Tae and beating him. What the heck is she doing?! His aunts are trying to stop her. She screams that she suffered and worked her butt off today for him! He ends up taking a dive into the ceremonial table and knocking Harabeoji’s picture to the floor. Action freezes. And I can’t believe that she did that.

[ Episode 4: For Whom We Cook Pancakes ]

[ D-4: 4 Days before the Incident ]

Jang Mi is helping a dehydrated Ki Tae walk down to his car after rescuing him from being trapped in his bathroom. He tries to make her leave him alone and to walk by himself, protesting that he said he’s fine, but he can’t stand without her help. Jang Mi ignores him and picks him up for a piggyback ride to the taxi. They come across Se Ah, who has just arrived. Ki Tae does not want Se Ah to see him getting a piggyback ride, much less from a girl, so he shoves himself off Jang Mi. Man, he looks bad! Really ashen. He tells Se Ah that nothing’s wrong, even though there obviously *is* something wrong.

Jang Mi immediately blurts out that Ki Tae collapsed in his bathroom. Se Ah is immediately alarmed and asks where he’s hurt. He pulls away from her touch and says he didn’t get hurt anywhere, trying to assure Se Ah that he’s fine. Jang Mi immediately answers that she thinks he hurt his head. Ki Tae’s a little shocked and Jang Mi sputters that he was acting weird. Flashback to him holding onto her for dear life. Both Jang Mi and Ki Tae look uncomfortable with the memory. Jang Mi protests that it's mental confusion or something. Anyway, he's not normal.

Se Ah suggests they go to the hospital. Ki Tae replies that he’s a doctor and really he’s okay. Man, he is as bad as when my dad got heat stroke. It took me and my mom over an hour to convince him to go to the hospital. Jang Mi smacks him for being stupid. Good girl! She tells him that he should go since Se Ah’s a doctor too. She picks him up again and walks off with him. He’s too weak to argue, so he just has to endure being carried.

Se Ah drives them to the hospital. In her rearview mirror, she can see Jang Mi hovering over Ki Tae, worried sick. Jang Mi tells Ki Tae that he has a fever. He pulls her hand off his forehead, telling her to be quiet because his head hurts. They really do look like a dating couple right now. Jang Mi freaks on him saying it’s his head. She yanks his head around, trying to figure out where he has gotten hurt. Se Ah just has to sit there and listen to Jang Mi fawn all over Ki Tae. And she does not look happy.

At the hospital, Ki Tae explains getting locked in his bathroom. Doctor clarifies that Ki Tae’s not hurt. Jang Mi asks why Ki Tae didn’t tell her that he wasn’t hurt. He protests that he kept telling her that he was fine. Jang Mi mutters that she thought he was dying. Doctor is called away to tend to a bloody patient that the EMTs have just brought in. Once Doctor is gone, Ki Tae goes to remove the IV but Se Ah stops him. She tells him to finish it before he goes; he hasn’t eaten for 48 hours. Se Ah declares that Jang Mi is his lifesaver. She was only there because Jang Mi told her to. Jang Mi smiles. Ki Tae mutters that Jang Mi spreads rumors everywhere. No more smile on Jang Mi’s face.

Ki Tae declares that he wants to go. Jang Mi stops him from pulling out his IV again and tells him to see his family before he goes; they’ll be there soon. He asks how they found out. Jang Mi smiles, self-conscious, and says that she called Halmeoni. She thought he was seriously hurt. Neither Ki Tae nor Se Ah are happy about this development. Se Ah asks Jang Mi, that she even knows Ki Tae’s family? Jang Mi doesn’t know what to say, but Ki Tae declares that their families introduced each other. Not what Se Ah wants to hear.

Ki Tae says that “you” should go now. Jang Mi purses her lips and declares that he’s fine now. Because he’s grumpy and wants to be alone. Heh. She tells him that they’ll leave. He grabs Jang Mi’s wrist and tells her to stay. Se Ah doesn’t miss that wrist grab. Ki Tae turns to Se Ah and tells her that he’s sorry and thanks her, adding that because it’s getting late, she should leave. Se Ah isn’t sure how to take that one – because he’s basically kicked her to the curb for Jang Mi – but she smiles and says that she needed some rest anyway. She tells Jang Mi to take care of Ki Tae and takes her leave. Ki Tae and Jang Mi awkwardly look at each other. Se Ah gets into her car and thinks about how Ki Tae gave Jang Mi a wrist grab. She drives off just as Halmeoni, Aunt and Mom arrive.

Jang Mi tells Ki Tae that he’s so childish. Trying to get Se Ah to be jealous like that. He protests that it’s not like that. If Mom says her, it would have made things more complicated. Jang Mi says that Mom would like it. Ki Tae declares that’s precisely the problem. Jang Mi is sitting at his bedside, holding his hand. He doesn’t seem to notice or mind.

The women arrive. Jang Mi immediately jumps to her feet to give them a big bow of greetings. Aunt fusses over Ki Tae and he protests. Mom lets out a big sigh and turns her sights on Jang Mi. She declares that Jang Mi really loves to give shocks, eh? Aunt hisses at Jang Mi that they keep meeting in the ER. That's why you need good in-laws. Halmeoni is frowning. Jang Mi bows and apologizes. Then she declares that she’s not an in-law yet. Aunt can’t believe Jang Mi just said that. Ki Tae and Mom laugh at the same time, but not for the same reasons: Mom in disbelief, Ki Tae because he likes how Jang Mi isn’t cowed by them. She tells Ki Tae that she’ll go since his family has arrived.

Jang Mi bows and tries to go, but Ki Tae grabs her arm again and asks her not to go. No one misses that one. Ki Tae tells the women that he’ll stay with Jang Mi and they can just go now. Aunt yells at Ki Tae for this. He tells Aunt that they’re no help. He just needs a good rest. Halmeoni asks for the whole story. Where exactly is he hurt? Ki Tae leans in and says that it’s serious. He’s not even sure of what kind of symptom it is, but his heart seems to stop if he doesn’t see Jang Mi. I love Mom’s reaction to hearing this. She looks away with an ‘oh, please,’ expression. Is he really expecting us to believe that he’s that in love with this girl? Jang Mi’s reaction is classic, too; she gags a little. Ki Tae says that he needs her around to be able to breathe. He’s not sure if it’s cardiopulmonary or mental... they need to do more test.

Halmeoni is ecstatic that he’s okay. Aunt is looking disgusted over how he’s being so needy. She tells him that it’s a mental condition. Jang Mi tells them what really happened: Ki Tae’s bathroom door was broken and he was locked in. They don’t need to worry. Ki Tae takes Jang Mi’s hand as he tells them that he would have starved to death if Jang Mi hadn’t saved him. Halmeoni gushes over Jang Mi while Mom looks like she’s enduring a farce. As Halmeoni repeats that Jang Mi is a lifesaver, Mom escorts her away. Aunt whispers that she’s keeping an eye on Jang Mi and leaves.

Once they’re gone, Jang Mi raps Ki Tae on his head. He wants to know what her problem is. She tells him to stop using her! She makes a face like she wants to hit him again. In the car, Halmeoni is telling Aunt that she shouldn’t have accused Jang Mi before hearing her out. Aunt says that she thought Jang Mi caused a problem again. Last time, Halmeoni got drunk and passed out with her. Halmeoni responds that her health has improved so much since then because of that good night’s sleep. Her wrinkles are gone and her skin is shiny. Mom tells Halmeoni that she has edema. Halmeoni looks over at Mom with a glare. Mom says she will make Halmeoni some pumpkin soup to alleviate the swelling. Halmeoni looks disgusted as she tells Mom that her judgment is not always right and she shouldn’t judge others so easily. Halmeoni is indignant as she says that Jang Mi actually has got a good head on her shoulders and she can make good pancakes, too. Aunt likes that idea (of the pancakes).

Mom declares that Jang Mi needs to be able to help Ki Tae. She’s talking about in his career. Aunt thinks so, too. Halmeoni points out that Ki Tae can't live without Jang Mi. She makes him want to live. What more do they want? Aunt points out that Ki Tae really seems to want Jang Mi and if Mom keeps opposing her he might cut all ties with the family. Mom gives Aunt a look and Aunt stops talking. Halmeoni tells Mom to bring Jang Mi over and befriend her. Mom agrees to do as Halmeoni says.

[ D-3: 3 Days Before the Incident ]

Jang Mi is riding on her bike towards home. She sees Oma says goodbye to Mom. She immediately gets off her bike to go and greet Mom (with her customary big bow). And for someone who isn’t dating Ki Tae, she sure worries about being polite and pleasing to his mother. Mom hopes that it's not a difficult favor and Oma assures Mom that it’s not. Mom doesn’t answer when Jang Mi asks why she’s there, just bids Oma farewell and drives off with Aunt.

As soon as they are out of eyesight, Jang Mi urgently asks Oma to tell her what happened. Oma won’t answer the question until the reach the Chicken Shack. There, Oma tells Jang Mi to go help with Harabeoji’s memorial service. Jang Mi doesn’t want to but Oma says that it will earn her some extra points with Mom and it will help Jang Mi get used to the family before she marries Ki Tae. Jang Mi can’t believe that Oma calls herself a mom. Other moms hate their girls suffering from in-law issues. Appa is on Jang Mi's side. Oma moans that Appa never cared about her but he feels pity for his daughter. Oma says that cooking pancakes a few times a year is way better than reeking of chicken grease 24/7.

Jang Mi tells herself that she has no choice, she has to tell them the truth. She announces that she’s not marrying Ki Tae. Appa is shocked at the announcement, but Oma looks skeptical. Jang Mi tells them that she’s sorry for lying but they actually don’t have any relationship at all. Oma can’t believe that Jang Mi’s telling such a crazy lie right now. Why is she being like this? Why can't she marry him? Jang Mi yells at her not to believe only what she wants to. She needs to listen to Jang Mi!

One of the Chicken Shack’s customers grumble-slurs that Jang Mi is so loud while they’re drinking alcohol. They tell Jang Mi to come ad pour them a drink! Oma takes offense and before Appa can stop them, she goes out and throws chicken on them. I can’t tell if it’s the chicken she just finished or not. Oma yells at them to get out! Go to a pricey bar if they want to ogle a girl! Appa tries to smooth things over by telling the men that their meal is on the house, they just need to leave. Oma can’t believe him. She yells at Appa that this is why Jang Mi has a negative view of marriage, because Appa is such a pushover.

The argument devolves into Oma says that they should just get divorced. She goes over and pulls out from behind the counter a divorce decree for them to stamp. Jang Mi sighs and declares that Oma’s been threatening divorce since she was in high school. Oma snaps back that she persevered in the marriage because she didn’t want to ruin Jang Mi’s chance of getting married, but now, since Jang Mi doesn’t want to get married, she and Appa should split right now! Oma pounds her stamp in the ink and Jang Mi screams that she’ll do it! She’ll go to their house! Oma is appeased but Jang Mi is not happy.

[ D-2: 2 Days Before the Incident ]

Jang Mi goes to Ki Tae’s office and he tells her that she should go. Jang Mi’s surprised at his answer. He’s being so indifferent. It's his family's ritual after all. Ki Tae answers by asking her why she'd complicated things. Practically rolling her eyes, Jang Mi answers that she saved his life. He says that she’s the one who nearly killed him since she’s the one who broke the bathroom door handle. Jang Mi can’t believe him. Who was it that grabbed her tightly as soon as he saw her? Ki Tae doesn’t have an answer for that one. Heh. I love it when she beats him at his own game. I don’t’ think many people can actually do that, beat Ki Tae in a battle of wits. Ki Tae looks intently at the paperwork he has on his desk.

Jang Mi asks Ki Tae is he, by any chance, develop feelings for her? Is that why he wants her to go to this? Because he really wants to marry her? Heh. Ki Tae laughs like that couldn’t possibly be the reason and says that he wants her to go because he *doesn't* want to get married. Plus Mom invited her so that they *won’t* get married. Jang Mi doesn’t get what he means. He explains that Mom wants her to see what a tough position it is, being the daughter-in-law in their family, so that Jang Mi will want to leave on her own. Without getting a drop of blood on her hands. She'll say she did her best to accept an incompetent Joo Jang Mi as a daughter-in-law. Till the end, she'll be remembered as the "good" person.

Jang Mi wants them to just fess up. Ki Tae says that it’s too late. She should think of the consequences. Jang Mi moans that the lies are piling up. They should just end it! Ki Tae declares that even if she wants that, they have to make Mom split them up. If she says she can't take this klutz as a daughter-in-law, then they can wrap up their act. Jang Mi doesn’t understand why they have to do it that way. Ki Tae declares that it's a pride battle now. He can't give in just like that. They should just see who throws in the towel first.

Jang Mi wonders why she should get involved in his pride battle. He says that he’ll beg her one last time. She should just show her ugliest self on that day. Jang Mi groans some more from the stress of it. She asks what she needs to do. Ki Tae gets a look like he’s been enlightened and tells her to just be her usual self. Her usual self! Heh. He is such a dork! Jang Mi moans some more and rubs her head in frustration.

They leave his office. Ki Tae declares that he’s going home early to get some rest. She shouldn’t think of following him. Jang Mi replies that she has plans anyway. Ki Tae stops and looks at her. He almost sounds jealous as he asks who the plans are with. A smiling Yeo Reum declares that they’re with him. He waves hello at Jang Mi. Jang Mi smiles and waves back. Ki Tae definitely doesn’t look happy about this. He looks Yeo Reum up and down. Jang Mi barely gives Ki Tae a ‘bye’ before she leaves with Yeo Reum. Ki Tae does not like the look on her face.

Ki Tae decides to follow them in his car. Heh. But he doesn’t like her at all. It’s just so that she doesn’t mess up their story, of course. Yeah, that’s the reason. He is not happy watching them as they walk. They play Kai Bai Boh (Rock Paper Scissors) with Yeo Reum losing and getting flicked on the head by Jang Mi. Ki Tae really doesn’t like how familiar they are.

Jang Mi and Yeo Reum stop at a restaurant for mul naeng myeons (cold noodles). Ki Tae yells out his order for one sashimi noodle and sits at their table. Jang Mi can’t believe it and asks why he’s there. Ki Tae replies that he can’t let his girl eat alone with a guy. Yeo Reum smiles at his show of testosterone. Ki Tae looks at Yeo Reum and says that Yeo Reum must not be aware that Jang Mi’s his girl. Jang Mi hides her face in her hands. Yeo Reum smiles and says that he knew she was his boss's girl and that Ki Tae is his boss’s friend. Ki Tae declares that love comes before friendship for him.

Yeo Reum responds that Ki Tae’ll probably understand him seeing Jang Mi, then. They’re cool, right? Ki Tae tells Yeo Reum bring it on. Yeo Reum laughs and tells Ki Tae not to be so scary. How could he stack up against Ki Tae? Ki Tae’s so much richer… and older. Jang Mi suppresses a laugh at that dig. Ki Tae doesn’t miss it. Ki Tae says that Yeo Reum has so many girls. Coolly, Yeo Reum replies that none of them are like Jang Mi. Staring contest. Jang Mi tells them to stop, but they keep staring at each other.

Ajumma brings the noodles. Ki Tae grabs the scissors and goes to cut Jang Mi’s noodles. She tells him not to cut hers. Yeo Reum chimes in that he doesn’t want his cut either. He and Jang Mi have the same tastes! Jang Mi smiles happily at him. Ki Tae frowns and cuts his noodles. Looking at Ki Tae, Yeo Reum says that regular noodles are the best. No subtext there. He looks at Jang Mi and adds the “Right?” She smiles.

Jang Mi is digging in and Ki Tae knows he’s losing. He picks up Jang Mi’s bowl and tells Yeo Reum with a smile that he and Jang Mi share a lot. Jang Mi is surprised. Ki Tae starts drinking her broth. Yeo Reum asks if the pair sleeps together. Ki Tae chokes on the broth and starts hacking. Jang Mi is surprised at the question. Yeo Reum chuckles, surprised, too. He concludes that the pair hasn't slept together. Even as he’s still choking, Ki Tae sputters back, asking what if they have? Jang Mi yells at them to stop.

Yeo Reum tells Ki Tae that if they did, it doesn’t matter. Ki Tae steams while Yeo Reum sucks up his cold noodles. Jang Mi nonverbally tells Ki Tae to cut it out! Yeo Reum looks up at Ki Tae, smiling. He knows that he’s got Ki Tae on the run. If this were a competition, of course. Jang Mi eats her noodles, feeling uncomfortable.

Jang Mi drags Ki Tae out of the restaurant and demands to know what he’s doing. He doesn’t answer but tries to turn it back on her. What does she think she’s doing. Is she really planning on dating him? Still annoyed, she tells Ki Tae that he doesn’t need to worry. She’s getting to know him gradually. He tells her that no matter how careful she is, she’s no match for Yeo Reum. She retorts that it’s none of his business. Ki Tae says that it is. What if she gets caught with another guy by Mom? Jang Mi protests that they’re going to be ending things soon anyway. Ki Tae says she should wait to date until after they wrap it up cleanly. She just needs to turn over his family’s memorial table first.

Yeo Reum exits the restaurant, giving the bill to Ki Tae. Now there’s a cheep date. Another guy pays. Jang Mi motions for Ki Tae to pay it. Ki Tae sighs and goes in to settle the bill. Yeo Reum looks at Jang Mi and takes her hand, saying with a smile that they should go. Ki Tae exits the restaurant to find Jang Mi and Yeo Reum are gone. Doh! And I am laughing at how funny that is. Ki Tae sends Jang Mi a text, telling her that Aunt could be spying on them. Jang Mi immediately gets jumpy and is so for the rest of the date.

Jang Mi and Yeo Reum end up in the park. She’s really paranoid about getting caught but tries to act casual. Yeo Reum asks her about it and she says that she feels like someone is watching her. Yeo Reum replies that if she’s with him, she'll have to get used to it. He attracts people's attention. I can’t decide if that’s really arrogant or what. Because he says it so matter-of-factly, and he is a good looking guy. They laugh at that one.

Yeo Reum asks her if she’s worried about Ki Tae? She doesn’t really have an answer. He asks if she’s really dating Ki Tae. She doesn't know. A car pulls up but the driver is hidden from view. The bright lights pop on, causing Jang Mi to hide her face and run away. Yeo Reum follows and asks why she’s hiding. She says that she doesn’t know either. They decide to leave, but Jang Mi spots someone who looks familiar. It’s Dad, sitting with a woman in a scarf. Jang Mi immediately rushes to sit them on a bench, with her back to Dad.

Yeo Reum asks if Jang Mi knows them. Jang Mi can’t bear it, but then the wind blows the scarf off the woman… revealing that it’s *not* Mom. That dirty rat! Jang Mi quickly hides her face and grabs Yeo Reum’s head so he can’t look either, as Dad rushes over to grab his date’s scarf. Mistress giggles and waves at Dad. Yeo Reum thinks that Jang Mi wants to kiss, so he puckers up, but she slaps his mouth with a no.

After Dad grabs the scarf, Jang Mi peers around at him and his date. Yeo Reum asks if that’s her mother-in-law. Jang Mi is shocked and says that it’s not her. And Dad kisses Mistress on the forehead. No… she's not her. Dad and Mistress are all smiles as they leave. And I want to punch him. At least I have an idea of what’s wrong with that family now. Dad can’t keep his pants on. And Mom’s stuck taking care of his mother and sister, who treat Mom like crap. I really want to punch him. Or worse.

Jang Mi feels terrible. It’s obvious on her face. Yeo Reum begs her to tell him who they are. Jang Mi says they should just go. Yeo Reum asks, “Already.” A still-stunned Jang Mi apologizes but says that she’ll get going. Yeo Reum wants to take her home, but she says she wants to go home alone. Yeo Reum looks concerned as she walks away.

Yeo Reum is leaving the park when he notices the car. It’s Se Ah. She tells him to get in. What is *she* doing. She tells him that he seems to be pretty close with Jang Mi. What's their relationship? Yeo Reum just smiles and says that Jang Mi must be something else, since everyone's so interested in her. Nice dodge there. Se Ah gets to the point. She says that she’s interested in Ki Tae. Yeo Reum calls Ki Tae hyungnim. She says that she heard that Ki Tae and Jang Mi have met each other's parents. Yeo Reum doesn’t want to believe it. That's what Se Ah was thinking, too. Ki Tae can't be sincere about Jang Mi; he’s not that type of person.

Yeo Reum laughs and says that he’s thinking the opposite: Ki Tae’s the one who’s sincere and Jang Mi isn’t interested. He supposes that it’s because Jang Mi is attracted to him. Se Ah smiles, with a hint of sarcasm there. Se Ah asks him if he’ll find out about their relationship for her? The facts rather than just feelings. Yeo Reum asks why he should do that. Se Ah supposes that he’s getting to know Jang Mi anyway, so he’ll just kill two birds with one stone. She holds out an envelope. I’m sure it has money in it. And if I didn’t like her before, I don’t like her now. Yeo Reum takes the envelope and looks inside and says that he should have a feast with Jang Mi.

Jang Mi is on the bus, worrying what she should do. She feels bad for Ki Tae.

Ki Tae is at home, checking out his bathroom, making sure that the door handle works. He wonders why Jang Mi would pick Yeo Reum of all guys? She has poor taste in men.

[ D-1: One Day before the Incident ]

Jang Mi is at work, worrying whether she should tell Ki Tae or not. Hyun Hee asks her what’s bothering her. Jang Mi says that it’s nothing. Hyun Hee declares that she’s disappointed. They used to share everything. Well, that was before she caught you out with her ex. This girl. Hyun Hee says that it’s because of Hoon Dong, right, and then declares that girls' friendships are shallow indeed. The only one with the shallow friendship is yours, Hyun Hee. You’re the one who snuck around behind her back to try to land her ex. A guy who broke her heart. Even if she’s moved on, he’s still off limits.

Jang Mi replies that it's nothing like that. Hyun Hee declares that it was all for her sake. Jang Mi replies that she knows. In a tone that implies her saying, “Sure it was.” Hyun Hee protests that Jang Mi isn’t believing her. Hyun Hee is serious. Jang Mi should ask Hoon Dong Oppa herself. Hoon Dong steps forward. Oh, this girl is a total weasel. She and Hoon Dong are perfect for each other. Hoon Dong is holding a bouquet behind his back. Hyun Hee declares that they should go have a talk. Jang Mi asks Hyun Hee what she’s thinking. Hyun Hee declares that Hoon Dong hurt her so badly that she might date just anyone. Hyun Hee doesn’t want Jang Mi to get hurt…

Jang Mi can’t believe Hyun Hee’s nerve. ‘Just anyone?’ Hyun Hee names them: Ki Tae or Yeo Reum… or Hoon Dong Oppa. Hoon Dong somberly tells Jang Mi that she can just tell him now, of her sincerity, her true feelings. And here’s where she should just say that she doesn’t like him. Instead… Jang Mi asks him why she should do that. Hoon Dong wasn’t expecting that. He was expecting her to be still pining for him and to jump at the chance to declare her love for him again.

Hoon Dong blinks a few times and then gets down on one knee, extending for the bouquet. He declares that she should because he’s now sincere. Jang Mi smiles bitterly and says that she’ll tell Hoon Dong. One of the three wasn’t for her. It’s him! He really wasn’t expecting that. Hyun Hee suppresses a smile. She is really manipulative. She knew that was going to happen, but she's just trying to get in good with Hoon Dong. Hoon Dong protests that Jang Mi should stop playing hard-to-get. She tells him to stop. Should she repeat herself? Angrily, he tells her not to tell him. It’s okay for her not to tell him.

Jang Mi looks up and sees Mom walking through the department store. Hoon Dong stands up and says that words are important. But from now on, he’ll show her with actions! She quickly drags him over to shove him in one of the changing rooms. He thinks she’s taken him back, so he starts hugging her, but she shoves him inside and shuts the door. Then she hurries out to welcome Mom, although she acts like she didn’t realize that it was Mom. Mom immediately apologizes, since Jang Mi must be busy. Mom says that she came to buy some meat and fruit for the memorial table. Does Jang Mi have some time? Jang Mi doesn’t know what to do, but then she spots Hoon Dong coming out from the back. She immediately agrees and pulls Mom away.

Mom shops while Jang Mi pushes the cart. Jang Mi feels bad for Mom. Mom asks if Jang Mi has peeled chestnuts before. Jang Mi responds that she’s done the roasted ones. Mom asks if Jang Mi’s family has such rituals. Jang Mi replies that they don’t. She saw it done when she was young, but the men peeled the chestnuts. Mom declares that in her family, only the women work in the kitchen. So Mom takes on the men’s work, too. Interesting. Jang Mi declares that when things are tough, people should help each other. There's no need to distinguish between men and women.

Mom replies that it’s not difficult. Rather it's a joy. If she takes on more work and tries harder, her loved ones will have a comfortable time and enjoy good food. Unless everyone just takes it for granted and no one is thankful. Mom declares that it's a special right and joy that only women get to have. Why share that with men? Because men should pitch in and share the load, too. Mom puts a huge bag of chestnuts in the cart. Jang Mi looks at Mom a bit sadly. Then she spots Hoon Dong, following them. She can’t help but make a face as she glares in his direction.

Mom can’t help but notice and she looks where Jang Mi is looking. She sees Hoon Dong and decides to go talk to him. Jang Mi tries to distract her by asking about the meat for the meal. Hoon Dong, of course, ducks down to hide when he sees Mom coming his way. Ki Tae would have come up with some plausible reason why he was there instead of just hiding. Mom arrives to find one of the supermarket attendants holding the flowers but no Hoon Dong. Jang Mi innocently asks if there’s anything wrong. Mom says that she thought she saw someone she knew. Mom walks back to the cart and Jang Mi sighs in relief, with just a little murder in her eyes.

Jang Mi lugs all the bags out to the car for Mom. Aunt ‘struggles’ carrying the eggs. After all, she almost couldn’t sip her frappachio, having to do that work. Mom says that she’d like to have tea with Jang Mi, but there’s a lot to prepare for tomorrow: marinate the meat, make the syrup for the rice drink, make the beef broth. Jang Mi says that it must be really hard for Mom. Mom mentions how she’s going to have to stay up all night and peel the chestnuts, too; there won’t be enough time tomorrow. Jang Mi offers to help. Even as Mom says that she couldn’t possibly ask Jang Mi to do that, she pulls the bag of chestnuts out of the trunk and dumps them in Jang Mi’s arms. Mom asks if Jang Mi can come early the next day. Jang Mi agrees to. Aunt says that she looks forward to tomorrow and then asks Jang Mi to take care of her trash. Even though Jang Mi’s arms are full. Nice.

When Jang Mi gets back to work, her manager scolds her for leaving work unexpectedly. Jang Mi apologizes and then asks for tomorrow off. Heh. Manager cuts her off and tells her that she would like some advance notice if Jang Mi decides to quit because of her upcoming wedding plans. Hyun Hee puts her hands over her mouth like it was an accident that Manager knows, like it just slipped out of her mouth. Yeah, right. I am liking this girl less and less. Manager says that she heard that Jang Mi’s future mother-in-law came by. Hyun Hee smiles and says that Hoon Dong Oppa told her. I am really tired of her calling Hoon Dong ‘Oppa,’ too. Hyun Hee asks if she’s the doctor's mom.

Manager says that when Jang Mi becomes the wife of a doctor, she’s going to stop by the store often, right? Jang Mi tries to protest that it’s not like that. Manager says that Jang Mi is already out looking at wedding gifts. She wants to see what Jang Mi is hiding behind her back. Then Manager wonders why Jang Mi bought chestnuts for a wedding gift. Manager declares that they all should work late today. Yay. Jang Mi glares over at Hyun Hee, who rubs her hands together and says that she’s sorry.

It’s late when Jang Mi leaves the store. She sits for a moment and looks at the chestnuts.

Ki Tae is sitting in bed, reading. He hears the keypad for his front door. Heh. He gets out of bed to see who it is. It’s Jang Mi, who declares that he hasn’t changed his pass code. Ki Tae asks why she couldn’t ring the doorbell. She replies that he wouldn't have opened the door. He tries to sound mad as he asks why she’s there. She tells him that he should be grateful she’s checking up on him. He could have fallen and cracked his skull open in the bathroom. Then what would he have done?

Ki Tae repeats his question: why is she there? She makes a face at him and plops the chestnuts on the kitchen counter. He asks what this is. She says that Mom came by to buy groceries, so this is his homework. He sighs. Jang Mi proposes that they do it together (with a smile, no less). Ki Tae looks at her and asks if she told Mom that she’d do it? Jang Mi fell into her trap. Can't she see it's already started? She sighs and tells him she doesn't know. Then she hands him a knife to start peeling. He tells her to do it. She’s indignant as she responds that it’s for *his* Harabeoji.

Ki Tae asks Jang Mi why she interfered to begin with? Jang Mi starts rubbing the knives together and gets some crazy eyes going as she asks if she should just fess up, that everything was an act. There’s a dog whine sound effect and the next thing we see is them peeling the chestnuts.

Jang Mi looks at Ki Tae’s latest chestnut and tells him to do a better job! He replies that he’s never done this before. She tells him that he should be ashamed. He chomps a chestnut as his answer, to spite her. Jang Mi tells him that he’s been spoiled for the past 30 years. Ki Tae looks at her and says that he just can't understand. She’s supposed to be making a scene. Why is she putting so much work into this? Jang Mi says that she just felt sorry for her, the more she got to know about things. Ki Tae can’t believe she’s talking about Mom.

Jang Mi says that Mom works hard for Ki Tae’s family, but his family doesn’t acknowledge it. Ki Tae replies that she says that because she hasn't lived with Mom. Jang Mi says that he wouldn't in spite of living with her. Jang Mi looks at him peeling the chestnuts and decides she’s going to mention what she saw. So that he’ll stop being so hard on Mom. She tries to prepare him by telling that she has something to say that will probably hurt him. He impatiently asks what it is, like she’s being overly dramatic over nothing. Jang Mi says that he should know before it is too late.

Ki Tae stops peeling and looks at Jang Mi. She tells him that if it's difficult, he can talk with her about it. She’s been through a similar situation, so she can understand. She’s been stuck in the middle of her parents' fights a lot. He asks her what she’s trying to say. She tells him not to be shocked. Gently, she tells him that Dad another–

Ki Tae cuts her off before she can finish, telling her to shut up. She’s surprised by his reaction. Harshly he tells her, “What do you even know?” Whoa. So he knew. Ooph! Jang Mi replies that she saw him. He throws down his knife and tells her to mind her own business. She realizes that he already knew. He blinks and his nose flares but he just glares at her. He gets up and walks away. She asks him why he hasn’t done anything about it? He can't just sweep it under the rug! Jang Mi declares that Dad should stop before Mom finds out.

Jang Mi says that if it’s too awkward for him to do it, she’ll meet with Dad and– Again, Ki Tae cuts her off, spinning around to face her. He harshly asks who she thinks she is. She asks what he means. He quickly crosses to stand in front of her and tells her not to butt into their family affairs. He kicks the bowl of chestnuts, sending them all over the floor. Does she think she’s family because she’s peeling the chestnuts? She replies that she’s trying to think of him. He tells her he never asked for that. They’re not going to be tangled in this mess anymore after tomorrow. Did she forget?!

Jang Mi’s angry now, angry at his rejection when she’s only trying to be his friend. She tells Ki Tae, “okay,” and sarcastically apologizes for forgetting her place and interfering with his great family's affairs! She grabs her purse and leaves. Ki Tae looks at the chestnuts on the ground and kicks them. He looks like he feels like crap for how he just treated her. As she stomps down the hall, she mutters to herself that Ki Tae is a stupid bastard. And she worried for him! That stupid jerk! She punches the elevator button and says that he’s a stupid jerk for keeping that bottled up inside. She sighs and sadly walks into the elevator. Once she’s inside, she tells herself to forget it. She doesn't want a relationship with him either. She’s going to create the ugliest scene that will cleanly end everything tomorrow!

[ D-Day ]

Next morning, Oma gets Jang Mi up early. Oma picks out her clothes for her. A barely awake Jang Mi declared that she picked out her outfit last night. Oma wants to see it. Jang Mi says that she’s wearing it right now. So it’s nice and wrinkly. Jang Mi sits up and reveals her clothes. They’re really casual and include an apron. Mom sinks to the floor dramatically, traumatized that Jang Mi’s planning on wearing that. Cow sound effect, complete with bell.

Jang Mi hops out of bed and leaves for Ki Tae’s house. Oma runs after her, asking how she can go looking like she just got out of bed? Appa is watering the lawn. Jang Mi retorts that she’s going to be making pancakes all day. Comfortable clothes are best. Mom protests that she’s going to be meeting the family. Jang Mi hisses at Oma to stop. She says that it’s a cow-like wife concept! Jang Mi leaves, with Mom giving her a “Fighting!” Appa comes up and asks Oma what her deal is. Oma just glares at him and goes back inside.

Ki Tae’s house. Jang Mi is pleasantly smiling as Mom looks at her outfit. Jang Mi notices that it’s really quiet. Mom says that the guests come in the evening. Jang Mi asks about Halmeoni and Aunt. Mom replies that they’re getting a massage. They head into the kitchen, where there’s a ton of work to be done. Really? And Mom’s the only one who’s going to do it. Wow. Jang Mi can’t believe it either. Mom says that she’s glad Jang Mi's there. Because of the extra pair of hands, her heart is a lot more comfortable.

Mom asks about the chestnuts. Jang Mi says that Ki Tae is bringing them. Mom’s surprised. Jang Mi smiles and says that they peeled them together. Mom can’t believe that Jang Mi made a doctor peel nuts? Jang Mi replies that she worked over time until late yesterday, too. Mom points out how Ki Tae is a surgeon and it would be bad if Ki Tae hurt his hands. Which I totally understand, although I totally think that Ki Tae should help out, too. Jang Mi apologetically says that she didn't think that far. Then she adds that he really sucked at it! She can’t believe he knows how to cut chins with how badly he did it. She laughs but Mom does not.

Mom says that it’s all her fault. She asked for too big a favor. Wow, she is really good at the guilt trip. Jang Mi responds that it’s not like that. Mom lays on the guilt further, saying that she used to do it all alone. It's easier that way. Jang Mi should just go sit down and rest. Jang Mi immediately declares that she can help Mom and takes over what Mom is doing.

Halmeoni and Aunt are getting their massages. Aunt wonders if Jang Mi really came. Halmeoni thinks she did. Aunt is sure that Jang Mi’s going to create a huge mess. Halmeoni declares that that is what Mom wants. Aunt proposes they go home so they won’t miss out on all the fun. Wow, they enjoy seeing Mom be miserable. Poor Mom. Even if she is really manipulative. She wouldn’t have to be that way if she felt more supported. Halmeoni doesn’t want to; it won’t be *that* fun. Halmeoni reminds Aunt that Jang Mi’s quite good at flipping pancakes. So they enjoy their massages.

Jang Mi’s stuck outside, in the sun, working on the food. She has a rag around her neck to help with the heat. And she’s cooking over a griddle, which is nice and hot. The ‘Chariots of Fire’ music plays. Jang Mi is sweating as she works. As I would be. Her hair is dripping, there’s so much sweat. She fans herself and then asks herself why she’s working so hard? She pulls out her phone and calls Ki Tae.

Ki Tae is at Bon Café. She asks his where he is. He orders his customary grapefruit drink but changes it to be grapeade (grape lemonade – sounds good). With lots of ice. She can’t believe him. She’s busting her butt for his family, sweating like crazy, and he’s relaxing, drinking grapeade with lots of ice? Then, desperately, she asks if it’s refreshing. He tells her to just burn all the food or crush it into porridge. Jang Mi can’t see how she can joke around with food. She whines, asking why he isn’t coming! He says he still has some surgeries. She puts down her utensils.

Indignant, she says that she got chewed out and then took the day off. Married life is unbelievably unfair, eh? He asks her why she cares, since they’re not getting married for real. She yells into the phone that if it were a real marriage then she would rather not do it! He hisses at her and tells her to keep it down. She groans and whines that he needs to just hurry up. And not to forget to bring the chestnuts. Yeo Reum brings his drink, so Ki Tae hangs up.

Ki Tae goes to leave, only to have Hoon Dong step in front of him, a glare on his face. He tells Ki Tae not to hurt Jang Mi. That’s rich, coming from him. Ki Tae takes a drink and says, “okay.” He tries to go, but Hoon Dong grabs him and asks if he’s not feeling guilty? Hoon Dong protests that he was with her first. If Ki Tae’s a friend, he should move over! Ki Tae asks what he can do, since Mom loves Jang Mi. Ki Tae adds, to Hoon Dong’s horror, that Jang Mi is over at his house, cooking for the memorial ceremony right now. Yeo Reum overhears, too. Hoon Dong can’t believe it. Ki Tae doesn’t like people; he wants to stay single. He asks if Ki Tae’s really going to marry her? Ki Tae answers by smoothing down Hoon Dong’s shirt and fixing his neck scarf. He slaps Hoon Dong on the shoulder and walks off. Hoon Dong yells after Ki Tae that he needs to pay up!

Jang Mi is finally done cooking. She starts doing a crazy dance that includes the splits and looking through her legs. Unfortunately, right as she’s looking through her legs, Halmeoni and Aunt arrive, with the Aunts (three of them). So, Jang Mi is in effect mooning them. A horrified Jang Mi quickly stands up and awkwardly smiles at them. She bows deeply and greets them. Aunt2 asks if Jang Mi’s the maid. Aunt says that she’s Ki Tae’s girlfriend. Aunt3 can’t believe it. Aunt4 actually seems pleasantly surprised that Ki Tae has a girlfriend. Halmeoni tells them to go inside; they’re talk there. The aunts head inside. Halmeoni hurries over to Jang Mi and sympathizes with Jang Mi about it being hard. Jang Mi replies that she can breathe now that the aunts have come. Halmeoni awkwardly smiles.

Inside, the Aunts and Halmeoni are laughing over Jang Mi's face from earlier. They’re chowing down on the food that Jang Mi's prepared. Jang Mi is scrubbing dishes in the kitchen while Mom works. Jang Mi mutters that it’s not fair. They’re just sitting there eating the pancakes. Aunt yells into Mom to bring them some rice punch please! Mom says that they don’t just eat the pancakes. Heh. She gets the rice punch. Jang Mi hears the Aunts order Mom to reheat the cold pancakes and complain about what’s there. They want to know when dinner is; they’re starving. Jang Mi declares that the ugly scene is out there. How can she top that?

Jang Mi’s phone rings. It’s Yeo Reum. She whispers hello. Her whole side of the conversation will be in whispers, with her hand covering the phone. He says that he’s found a really secluded place. Jang Mi apologizes and says that she’ll call him later. He is a stinker. He knows what she’s doing and he’s calling to give her a hard time. Yeo Reum tells her that she’s too much. She just left the other day. She replies that she’s a bit busy. He asks where she is and she lies about being at work. Aunt pokes her in and tells Jang Mi they want some fruit. She brightly agrees, calling Aunt ‘Aunt’ and then quickly changing that to ‘Ma’am.’ This gets Aunt’s attention. Aunt wants to know who she’s talking to. Aunt decides to eavesdrop.

Jang Mi tells Yeo Reum that she won't be done until late that night. Yeo Reum says that he’ll wait up. He tells her to come by Bon Café. Ki Tae arrives, in a very nice dark suit, and sees Aunt eavesdropping while Jang Mi is on the phone. He loudly calls Jang Mi’s name, which startles her and she drops her phone in the sink, ruining it. Ki Tae isn’t happy. He greets Aunt and she tries to act like nothing was going on. Jang Mi pulls out her phone and it’s dead. Ki Tae heads into the kitchen to cluck at her for not being careful. She’s traumatized because her phone is dead.

Ki Tae’s not sympathetic. He tells Jang Mi that she’s used that dumb phone enough. She responds, almost yelling, that to someone like him who only uses people, it may be just something he discards after using it once. He starts motioning at her to keep it down. She’s almost crying as she declares that to her it's a precious thing. He doesn’t like her being so emotional and tells her that she’s making such a big deal. She asks if he brought the chestnuts. He did. Ki Tae tells her to get a grip and remember what she’s supposed to be doing. Why is she working so hard? Jang Mi sighs and says that she doesn't know either.

Evening. The Memorial Service. The men make their respectful bows as the women watch. Jang Mi stands behind everyone, exhausted and hurting when she stands. She looks at Dad and remembers what he’s done.

Dinner. Jang Mi can hardly eat, she’s so tired. Ki Tae nudges her and tells her to get her ugly face on. Dad tells Jang Mi to eat a lot. She worked hard making the pancakes, right? She tells him thank you. Ki Tae pipes up that Jang Mi's not feeling well because of cooking all day. He tells Dad to give her something to drink. The conversation at the table falls silent with surprise at Ki Tae’s suggestion.

Dad pours Jang Mi a drink. She looks at Ki Tae and he gives her a look. She grimaces, but chugs the drink. She asks for another, getting everyone’s attention. Ki Tae smiles like he’s not sure what she’s doing. A third drink. Ki Tae smiles uncomfortably. Mom is looking at Jang Mi, not believing her behavior. Dad comments that Jang Mi must have had a very hard time.

Loudly Jang Mi declares that she *did* have a hard time. She looks down at the aunts and asks them if they don’t feel guilty. Ki Tae takes a bite of food. Awkward looks around the table. She looks over at Ki Tae and declares that the high and mighty third generation son didn’t bother to show up until it was near dinner time. He quietly reminds her that he peeled the chestnuts. Aunt asks him why he did that. Like he shouldn’t have been helping.

Jang Mi turns to Aunt and asks how she could go for a relaxing massage when someone else deserves one. She looks over at Mom as she says that last part. Aunt protests that it’s to purify themselves for the ritual. As she looks over at the aunts, Jang Mi responds that all they do is chit-chat! Aunts can’t believe they’re being called out like that. It had been a long time. They just had a conversation. Mom’s just looking at her food.

Jang Mi declares that she and Mom aren’t related to Harabeoji at all and they are the ones who worked their butts off. Halmeoni tries to get Jang Mi’s attention, to get her to stop. Jang Mi turns to Halmeoni and declares that Halmeoni feigned ignorance, that she didn’t know anything. Jang Mi thought she was a good person, but she’s disappointed! Halmeoni is appropriately chastised. Aunt sputters about Jang Mi's audacity. Dad declares that they understand what she’s trying to say.

Jang Mi yells at Dad that he’s the worst! Mom is sacrificing herself for everyone! But what did he do? Halmeoni closes her eyes. Uncomfortable glances around the table. Ki Tae looks at Dad. Dad replies that he was out-of-town. Jang Mi says that it doesn’t matter about him being out-of-town or writing characters. After he dumped everything on his wife, what did he do outside the house? Halmeoni blinks a few times. The aunts can’t believe her words. Ki Tae looks at Mom, who is simply staring ahead. Like she always does.

Dad says that he doesn’t get what she’s trying to say. She says that because she’s been through it, she knows what it’s like. If there’s a dent in a parents’ relationship, the child’s heart gets really big scars. Aunts want to know what Jang Mi’s saying. Ki Tae’s face says that this is exactly how he feels, but won’t admit. Dad shifts awkwardly. Jang Mi declares that she saw everything. That gets Mom’s attention. She and Dad look at Jang Mi. Halmeoni looks concerned. Ki Tae looks at her surprised. Mom tells Jang Mi to stop and come and see her for a moment. Jang Mi gets up from the table.

Aunt2 asks Dad if he and Mom are having problems. Halmeoni and Aunt look uncomfortable. Ki Tae looks at Dad, to see what he says. Dad asks what Aunt2 means by problems. There never was a problem. He takes another swig of drink and then gets up from the table. Halmeoni looks at Aunt and silently tells her to stay quiet. Aunts ask if Ki Tae knows anything. Ki Tae says that Jang Mi was talking about her parents. Their relationship isn’t very good. He gets up and leaves the table, too. Halmeoni looks like she hates what’s going on.

Mom tells Jang Mi that she knows that Jang Mi is rude, but this is too much. Jang Mi replies that it’s because she pities Mom so much. She was trying to help Mom. Mom chuckles slightly and asks if she looks like someone who needs sympathy? Jang Mi sympathetically says that it’s because Mom doesn’t know. Mom replies that she’s not a fool. She knows everything that goes on in this family. Wow, Mom knows. Wow. Jang Mi tells Mom that she doesn’t know.

Ki Tae arrives in time to hear Jang Mi tell Mom that if she does know, she’s a fool if you put up with it and to see Mom slap Jang Mi hard across the face. Ki Tae is shocked. Coldly, Mom tells Jang Mi to shut up. Whatever she knows, she shouldn’t let it slip out of her mouth. Jang Mi looks at Mom, stunned. She can’t believe that Mom knows. Ki Tae looks at Mom. Mom tells Jang Mi that just because she made some pancakes, does she really think she can interfere in their house's matters so recklessly? Jang Mi blinks, hurt.

Ki Tae remembers how he basically told Jang Mi the same hurtful thing. Jang Mi nods and says that she misunderstood big time. She thought, because of how Mom had worked her so hard like family, that she had become part of the family. That one stings Ki Tae. Jang Mi says she gets it. Someone like her only has duties and no rights. Right? Jang Mi nods again and asks how she could live like Mom. Jang Mi’s eyes are starting to glisten. No matter how many pancakes she made or dishes she washed, she couldn't live hiding the truth. She can't fake sincerity when she doesn’t mean it!

Jang Mi storms out of the kitchen and sees Ki Tae. She stops and looks at him, hurt. He doesn’t really do anything but look back. Jang Mi goes back to the living room. Mom just stands in the kitchen.

Aunt2 declares that Jang Mi gave a bad first impression. Really? She slaved all day and you’re being critical. Wow. Aunt2 declares that Jang Mi seemed unstable. As Jang Mi reenters the living room, Aunt 3 declares that if the parents are unstable, the kids will be too. Jang Mi hears her. Halmeoni is just sitting there with a frown on her face.

Aunt3 asks what Jang Mi’s parents do. Aunt disparagingly declares that they sell liquor. Ki Tae arrives to see Jang Mi standing there listening and his aunts muttering about how that explained Jang Mi's behavior. Jang Mi’s is mortified. Aunt4 declares that Ki Tae only received love from an affectionate family. How could Jang Mi be fine when all her parents did was fight? Aunt3 agrees that you need to receive love to give love. Ki Tae looks over at Jang Mi and feels bad for what they’re saying about her parents. Especially since his are so messed up. He can’t believe how hypocritical his aunts are being. Jang Mi’s trying not to cry as the aunts cluck that you have to get love to give it. They declare Jang Mi trouble.

Jang Mi turns to look at Ki Tae. He can’t meet her eyes. She asks him if he told them about her parents. She’s made a fist now. Was she not enough that he had to bring in her parents to be bashed about? He’s really uncomfortable. He starts to try to say something, but she stops him, asking that he even had to use someone else's scars? She yells at him, calling him an awful bastard and then starts hitting him. Which brings up back to the beginning of the show.

Jang Mi is beating Ki Tae while the Aunts are trying to stop her. Ki Tae’s trying to run. Jang Mi picks up food off the memorial table and starts beating Ki Tae with it. Halmeoni is just sitting at the table, cringing. Jang Mi screams that she worked so hard today for him. Ki Tae can only cover his head as she beats him. Halmeoni starts to cry.

Ki Tae falls into the memorial table. Halmeoni is shocked as Harabeoji’s picture falls to the floor. Mom indignantly demands to know what is going on. Ki Tae looks at Jang Mi. She looks less furious now. Halmeoni sobs. Jang Mi steps toward Ki Tae and drops her ‘weapon.’ She asks him if he’s satisfied. He looks away, awkwardly. Jang Mi announces that she’s done all that she was assigned to do so she'll be leaving now. She goes.

The Aunts can’t believe Jang Mi’s behavior. Disrespecting Harabeoji like that. Ki Tae sighs like he can’t believe it just happened like that. He runs after Jang Mi, telling her that he’ll drive her home. He grabs her wrist to stop her. She just needs to wait there and he’ll get the car. She wrenches her arm free and tells him that they were going to end it and she ended it for him. What more does he want from her? She walks away, with him saying her name but not running after her. He can only watch her go.

Ki Tae goes back inside. The Aunts are yelling at Mom for accepting Jang Mi. Mom’s just taking it, like usual. Ki Tae yells at them to please stop it! He declares that he’s only going to marry Jang Mi. If they oppose it, he’ll stay single forever. That's that. Mom starts to say something but a look from Ki Tae stops her.

Ki Tae starts cleaning up the memorial table. Which no one else bothered to do. Aunt tells Ki Tae that he’s not acting normally. Does he need to go back to the ER? Aunts can’t believe Jang Mi ruined Harabeoji’s memorial! Aunt2 tells Halmeoni to say something! Halmeoni can only think of what Jang Mi said to her at the dinner table, about how disappointed she was over Halmeoni’s behavior. Halmeoni sadly laughs, which Ki Tae notices. Halmeoni declares that Harabeoji turned over the table whenever he was the slightest bit upset anyway. She tells Harabeoji that it serves him right. She chuckles again and Mom sighs.

Jang Mi’s in the taxi. She takes down her hair and takes off her apron. She looks at her phone and remembers that it’s broken. Then she remembers that Yeo Reum said he would wait for her. She arrives at Bon Café but it’s closed. She sadly walks down the steps, but then Yeo Reum opens the door and calls her name. He smiles when she sees him. She can’t believe that he waited for her, especially since he couldn’t reach her. He tells her that he said he would wait. Emotional, she smiles at him gratefully.

Aunt is telling Mom about the conversation she overheard. Aunt thinks she’s hiding something. Mom pulls out her phone and calls Hoon Dong’s mother (HDM). She asks who Hoon Dong is seeing these days. HDM is driving in her car. She mentions that there was a stalker but HDM doesn’t remember the girl’s name. It was some ugly name, though. (Small note on that one: Jang Mi means Rose.) Mom asks if HDM would remember her if HDM saw the girl. HDM declares that you could never forget that mug. Mom suggests that they have brunch early at Hoon Dong’s café to discuss it. That’s a plan.

Yeo Reum is busy cooking like a pro while Jang Mi drinks some more. Yuck, she's drinking cooking wine. She asks Yeo Reum what he’d do if Hoon Dong catches him. Yeo Reum’s sure Hoon Dong won't. He gives her the pasta and as she starts to eat, he asks if it was tough at Ki Tae's? She asks him how he knew. Yeo Reum asks her if she’s that desperate to get married. She chugs some more wine and says that she didn't go to get married. She went to create an ugly scene. But it became sincere (real). Jang Mi says that her sincerity was ugly. The ugliest scene.

Yeo Reum asks if Jang Mi’s feeling for Ki Tae have become sincere. She smiles and says that it’s not like that between them. Yeo Reum likes that answer. Jang Mi says, that actually, she’s actually really, really, really, really, really, really worry about Ki Tae. She passes out and Yeo Reum keeps her from burying her face in her food. She head lands on the table with a thunk. She’s out. He smiles and looks at her. He pushes some hair away from her face and tells her that he’s worried about her more. Aw.

Ki Tae is sitting in bed, awake. I guess solitude isn’t so comforting tonight. He can’t stop thinking about what’s happened that evening. Jang Mi yelling that she can't hide her sincere feelings like Mom! The slap. He rolls over, but doesn’t fall asleep.

Next morning, Mom catches that taxi to meet HDM. Aunt calls Ki Tae and tells him. She wants double her usual fee for that information. Jang Mi and Yeo Reum are still at Bon Café, asleep. Aw, he gave her the couch and slept on the hard chairs. Mom and HDM are heading for the café. Ki Tae tries calling Jang Mi but remembers that her cell is dead. He starts to head for the café with more speed. And the door for the café beeps with someone opening it.

Thoughts

Eek! What a cliff hanger.

So what do I think about this episode? Wow. That was a lot of stuff for one episode. And it's only episode 4!

A lot came out at that family dinner:
  1. Ki Tae knows about Dad's infidelity, and I think he was aware that Mom knew, too. He wasn't too shocked when he overheard Mom and Jang Mi's conversation in the kitchen.
  2. Halmeoni knows. That was evident by her reactions (and non-reactions) to everything that Jang Mi was saying. I think it also explains a little why she treats Mom as badly as she does: she doesn't respect Mom for putting up with what Dad does and then for acting so self-righteously toward everyone else.
  3. Aunt knows. Her reactions said as much. But it seems like Aunt isn't deep enough to really concern herself with how Mom feels or should be feeling. Aunt's a bit of a gossip and it doesn't seem like she's bothered by anything that doesn't impact her.
  4. The rest of the family doesn't know. Their reactions and comments make that very evident.
  5. Most importantly, Mom knows! It makes sense that she would, but WOW, the fact that she puts up with it and all the crap his family shovels at her. What is she thinking? And even after all that, she still is trying to prove that Ki Tae isn't really in love with Jang Mi so that she can be right. Wow. I have no words.

My thoughts on Dad: What a scumball! He's a cheating dirtbag. We now know what the problem is between Ki Tae's parents: Dad cheats and Mom tolerates it. I can't help but wonder when Halmeoni was lecturing Mom last episode that it was her behavior that kept Ki Tae away, if Mom wasn't sitting there, saying to herself, 'no, it's because your son can't keep his pants on.' Why Mom just sits there and takes it, I really don't understand. But I digress. Dad is a scumbag!

I'm wondering if Mom's how she is because of what Dad's done, rather than her coldness driving him to it. And I'm wondering if that's what caused the split between Ki Tae and his family. And Ki Tae and Se Ah. Ki Tae found out about Dad's philandering and then that Mom knew about it, and she'd been covering for Dad and manipulating Ki Tae and that's what lead to calling off the engagement.

The family dinner also reveals what a good person Jang Mi is and how she cares about people, regardless of how they treat her. Mom has been mean to her from the start, but Jang Mi still felt for her because of Dad's betrayal and how his whole family treats her like their maid and kicking bag. How can Mom just take it like that? She also was really worried about how Ki Tae would feel, just because he's a person, not because they're actually dating.

I think that there was a lot that developed in Ki Tae and Jang Mi's relationship, that they aren't even aware of yet. She saved his life last episode, and as much as he won't admit it, it meant something that she showed up and saved him. She came when he needed her, even thought she shouldn't have. And then, when he's really mean to her about butting her nose in where it doesn't belong, when she's trying to tell him about his dad, she still goes over to his house and serves his family, despite how he acted.

And Ki Tae's starting to get jealous, even though he can't even admit it to himself. (Love the jealous Ki Tae! Him squirming is the best!) Yeo Reum is very perceptive about people, I think. He called it correctly that Ki Tae's got the feelings and Jang Mi doesn't yet. I really wonder what's going on with him. I think he hides behind his smile and his good looks, but for all the little things that he's been doing, I think he's actually really interested in Jang Mi. And I don't believe that he's as much of a player as Ki Tae and Hoon Dong think he is. Yes, women fawn all over him, but I don't think he actually takes them up on their offers.

I don't think that he took the money from Se Ah with the intention of actually spying on Jang Mi and Ki Tae, but just because Se Ah was stupid enough to offer it. He has no problem from taking gifts from women and his reaction to the money: he's going to have a feast with Jang Mi. He's a lot more observant than people give him credit for and he plays that up, too.

I can't believe that Hoon Dong is now trying to make up with Jang Mi and is jealous. The man was a weaselly coward in how he broke up with her -- hello, in jail with stalker charges! -- and didn't care about her more than as an amusement to flatter his ego, but now he wants to be serious with her. Yes, I could give it to him that he realized how much she made his life better, but the ship has sailed, buddy! Move on!

And Hyun Hee -- I really don't like her. She's a manipulative fake who pretends to be a friend but is really talking about you behind your back. I really hate game playing and she and Hoon Dong do both. Part of me hopes that Hoon Dong does end up dating her and then ripping out her heart like he's prone to do. It would serve her right for being so two-faced.

I don't think Se Ah's as bad a person, though. Yes, she can be manipulative and/or fake, but not in the way that Hyun Hee is. Se Ah's settled for the friend zone, even though she's still in love with Ki Tae, and now that's being threatened. I think the things that she's been doing are trying to convince Ki Tae that they belong together and any manipulating she's done is toward that end. She's fighting for him, obliquely, and I can't fault her for that. I just hope she doesn't get more vicious as Ki Tae falls more in love with Jang Mi. She already knows that Ki Tae isn't acting like his normal self and even though she may not be consciously aware of it, she's worried.

It's going to be interesting how the writers carry this forward. I can't wait to find out.
