Warm and Cozy Episode 9 Recap

The episode doesn’t replay the ending – which would have been awesome – but picks up after the hug. Jung Joo and Gun Woo are sitting – not close to each other, I might add – talking about what happened. He thought she was dying, gave her the restaurant, and worked for free. Jung Joo says that he must felt it was really unfair. Gun Woo answers – in a tone that’s a mix of indignant and relieved – he says that he totally does. He couldn't eat or sleep for days... Does she have any idea how worried he was? So it’s not that he gave her the restaurant or worked for free… it’s the worry and toll on his emotional well-being that wasn’t fair. Heh.

Jung Joo says that it feels unfair to her, too. Without knowing the truth, she liked that he did all that. She thought it would all be hers for the rest of her days, so she was truly happy. A little double speak there, since she’s not really talking about the Warm and Cozy. She says she’s talking about the Warm and Cozy. But we really know she was talking about him. And I think he knows it too.

Gun Woo lifts his chin – like he’s aware of but ignoring the double speak – says that Jung Joo found some regulars and promoted the restaurant. She worked really hard as if it was her restaurant. He tells her that there's nothing to feel unfair about. Meaning that the agreement stands. He just told her that he was hers forever, so this makes sense. She just needs to keep it up.

Jung Joo announces that she can't do it. Gun Woo wasn’t expecting that and asks, “Why not?” A sad smile as Jung Joo says that she shouldn't keep liking it. It's not even hers. Again with the doublespeak. Wow, I didn’t catch it the first time around, but she is totally talking about her heart here and her feelings for him. She smiles and tells him that she wants to quit. He doesn’t know why she would have to quit. Just thinking about it is hard. Is he talking about the Warm and Cozy or her heart? Gun Woo says they should say they just went through a near-death experience. They’ll take care of the rest next time. It's hard for him to even sit.

Back at the Warm and Cozy, Poong San is freaking out. He knows that Gun Woo knows. He is nervously pacing, trying to figure out what to do. He mutters that he’s in trouble. He stops and says that he should start by apologizing and begging. Jung Joo and Gun Woo return. Poong San immediately begs forgiveness. Gun Woo grabs him like he’s about to give him a nuggie, but then releases him and says that he’ll deal with him later. Gun Woo walks off to go upstairs, looking exhausted.

Poong San is much less desperate when he apologizes to Jung Joo – probably because he knows that she’s more rational and mature and is less likely to kill him. Jung Joo answers that he did it for her, so what can she say? Poong San tells her that Gun Woo had a really hard time these past few days. He even looked into hospitals to take her to. He thought a lot about how to broach the topic with her. Poong San adds that he doesn’t think Gun Woo got much sleep, either. He'll probably just pass out.

Jung Joo now sits on her bed, looking at her lease for the Warm and Cozy. [Lease period: Until Jung Joo's dying day.] She sighs and nods and goes to talk to Gun Woo. When she says his name outside his curtain, he doesn’t stir. She slides them open and his face is to the wall. She asks if he’s asleep and says that they should talk. He doesn’t move.

Jung Joo enters and sits beside him she says that it'll be good to leave things the way they are. It would be odd to nitpick on why she held onto him and why he was so nice to her. Again, she’s talking about her heart and not the Warm and Cozy. He was just being nice to her. Unsaid: it’s not because you liked her.

Memory of them at Sunrise Peak and him wishing that she hits it big.

He comforted her... helped her out...

Thoughts of him helping her save face in front of her old co-workers, comforting her when her lid flew away.

And he was good to her.

Her voice quivers slightly as she says that he only did all that because he took pity on her... but she... didn't know that. Her voice thicker, she says that she came to... like him too much. Gun Woo slowly opens his eyes but doesn’t move.

She says that, as a result, it's hard for her. She can't bear to be by his side. She... likes him too much.

Gun Woo sits up and rolls over to face her. I did not expect that. Neither did Jung Joo. He’s smiling slightly as he asks if that’s it. Is that why she’s leaving? She squirms, bites her lip, doesn’t look at him and doesn’t answer. Gun Woo sits up, Slightly smiling and squinting, he says, it wasn't a terminal illness. She was lovesick, wasn’t she?

Sputtering, Jung Joo asks if he wasn’t asleep. Did he hear everything? Almost crowing, Gun Woo says that he did… All of it. Why is he enjoying torturing her right now? Payback for his sleepless nights of worry? Or is he just a little giddy that this girl likes him. She tells him to just pretend that he didn't hear it.

Jung Joo announces that she’s leaving. She stands up to go, but Gun Woo grabs her arm and pulls her to sit by him on the bed. Close enough for kissing. Jung Joo gasps. Looking positively Puckish, he asks where she’s running off to? He needs to hear more. Trying to recover her pride, she says that there’s nothing more to hear. And he should forget what he heard. She’ll disappear.

Gun Woo cocks his head and says that he doesn't want to. He won't let her go. Are you talking right now? Or that love part? She looks at him, a little shocked. He says that lovesickness is a type of incurable illness. How can he kick out someone who's sick? Especially someone who's sick because of him. She laughs at him. Jung Joo and I are laughing for the same reason. Wow, I can’t believe that he’s that cocky. He and his Hyung are a lot alike.

Downstairs. Jung Joo has packed up her stuff and brought the contract. Gun Woo just can’t wipe that little smile off his face. Jung Joo declares that since he signed the contract with false information, she’ll void it. Now he knows that she doesn't have a terminal illness. And he knows how she feels anyway. It must be a burden for him so she’ll leave right now since she’s already packed. Gun Woo says that he doesn’t find it burdensome. Jung Joo can’t believe it.

Jung Joo asks if knowledge that she likes him… That doesn't affect him in the least? Well, yes, but not in a negative way. Gun Woo replies that when he thought she was sick, he wondered if she thought of him as a final resting place. So to be honest, he felt pressured by the way she looked at him. He is so wrong! Like he knew all this time. Jung Joo protests that it’s because he had the wrong idea and were mistaken! Gun Woo practically laughs. He’d say that and more. It was just because she just liked him so much.

Jung Joo says – after giving him a ‘ya’ – that she didn't look at him because she liked him that much. Gun Woo sounds like he doesn’t believe it: It's not that she liked him so much? He sucks some air between his teeth and says that that would mean that she isn’t in the final stages of lovesickness… so there’s a possibility of recovery. So why would she give up? And I shake my head at his impish side. Even as I laugh.

Jung Joo can’t believe he just said that. Continuing, he says that since he was so nice to her and was very obedient because he thought she was sick, it seems that she must be head over heels for him. Wow, he and Hyung really are cut from the same cloth. But she should just wait and look at him again. In the next few days, her feelings may go away and she’ll be completely cured. Not that he wants that. But he’s too prideful to admit it.

With certainty, Jung Joo says that it's faster to get over her feelings on her own and leave. She slides the contract across the table toward him. He picks it up for emphasis and says that given her current situation... rather than the contract, shouldn't she first take care of her heart? Even if she was to pack up and leave like this, he won't chase after her like last time. He'll just say, 'She must be having a nice life somewhere.' Sure. I believe you, I do. He leans forward and says that it's not like she doesn't harbor any hopes that he'd try and stop you, right? Jung Joo swallows. He so has her number and she knows it.

Still with that almost-smirk, Gun Woo asks what they should do? He won't chase after her. Since she feels embarrassed after confessing her feelings for him, he’ll be considerate of her and stay out of the restaurant today. He tells her not to make any rash decisions. He gets up, puts on his jacket and leaves.

Jang presents a bouquet of flowers to Hae Shil, Yoo Ja and Bok Nyeo. Assistant is with him. He says that as an apology, not only will President Song be a sponsor of the Lady Diver Festival but he also will provide the airfare and lodging for the invited guests. The ajummas are swayed but Hae Shil is not. Jang says that Hyung is waiting for Hae Shil so he can make a personal apology. Assistant adds that she’ll put them in a difficult position if she remains angry with them.

Hyung is waiting with a black box holding a black pearl necklace. He looks at it and wonders if he should have bought a bigger pearl. No, no, no... He’s the black pearl. He’s feeling quite confident. Hae Shil arrives – so he made her come to his house? Really, Hyung? Her face unreadable, she tells him that his sponsorship for the Lady Diver Festival was too great. He answers that it's a show of his apology. He thanks her for accepting it. Matter-of-fact, she replies that it’s nothing. She has no reason not to accept.

Hyung pulls out a chair for her and tells her to please have a seat. She replies that she has to go diving. He tells her to go diving there. He’ll help her make an amazing catch. He gets the necklace and shows it to her. It's a black pearl. Come and catch it. She looks at him. He says that it’s like he told her… she plucked out something more amazing than anything else she can catch from the sea. The music plays, the one with the trumpet that says that it’s all going wrong because he’s being a buffoon. He kept telling her that he was a black pearl, but she was the one who ignored those words without even opening it. Not the time to praise yourself, dude. You’re supposed to be groveling.

With edge in her voice, Hae Shil replies that she’s sorry she’s not at the standard of recognizing something so precious. She needs to go harvest conches and abalones. She has no plans to pick up that black pearl. She turns to go, but wrist grab. Hyung says that if he's done this much, can't she just accept? Wrenching her arm free, she practically yells at him that she has no thoughts of accepting him.

Hyung replies that she’d take Mr. Song's tricks since he's easy to deal with. But what, she can't even take time out to have tea with this great president? She felt sorry for Mr. Song. You, not at all. Mr. Song had nothing. You have everything. Except Hae Shil, of course. She said that she came here for the sponsorship, didn't she? Will she sit if he gives her double? Or drink tea if he gives her triple the amount? Will she accept the black pearl if he gives her ten times that amount? Way to ask if she’ll be bought.

Hae Shil shoves Hyung into the pool. She declares that she’s throwing the black pearl that she found back into the water. She won't have it. Hyung looks a little crushed. Her will isn't as weak as his. If she says it's over, then it's over. She walks off.

Jung Joo has gone to see Jong Bae. She asks about her house. Will it get sold if she puts it on the market for very cheap? He’s not sure, since it took 15 years for that house to be sold... She asks the market price of the Warm and Cozy. Turns out it’s worth more than she thought. Because there’s a lot of property space and a high-end interior, Jong Bae estimates that it’s worth 2,000,000,000 won. That’s a lot of zeroes. It was hard for me to count. That’s $1.8M. Dang! Jung Joo is shocked. Jong Bae asks if Gun Woo wants to sell it again? She quickly tells him ‘no.’

Back at the Warm and Cozy, Jung Joo is mopping. She mutters that she had no idea it was so expensive. She decides that she should get over her feelings because getting over the Warm and Cozy is a foolish thing to do. And she doesn't like Gun Woo that much. She’s trying to convince herself with that last one. Jung Joo goes back to mopping and notices the necklace he gave her that’s dangling from her neck. Memory of Gun Woo saying that the necklace wasn't free. He worked until his arm almost twisted off to get that for her.

Mayor stops by the Warm and Cozy. A sign reads that it’s closed. He decides to go inside. Jung Joo is sitting, curled, in a chair. She tells herself that this costs nothing. It holds no meaning. She’s shameless. And... she can accept free stuff. She looks at the necklace. Mayor sees it and he watches as Jung Joo begs to sob. He slowly walks out of the Warm and Cozy.

Even outside, he’s tip-toeing. Dead Face Harpy arrives. She starts to go inside the Warm and Cozy. Mayor remembers who she is and quickly steps in her path. Holding out his arms to block her like a basketball player. Heh. He tells her that she can't go inside. She snaps that she didn't come there to eat. He answers that she cannot enter. It's a restricted area. Sneering, she asks who he is. He quickly shoves his badge in her face and says that he’s the town mayor. For the sake of the residents’ welfare and peace, she’s forbidden to enter. She asks why she can't go inside? Head scratch. Mayor answers that it’s similar to when there’s a quarantine for swine fever or bird flu. Heh. Dead Face Harpy can’t believe it. Mayor shoos her into her car and makes her go.

Gun Woo is chewing on his thumb, thinking about what Jung Joo said: She can't bear to be by his side. She likes him a lot. He’s in a room at the resort. His phone rings, but he just looks at it. Dead Face Harpy is calling. She’s annoyed that he isn’t answering. The ringing stops and he goes back to thinking.

Jung Joo walks outside the Warm and Cozy with a broom. The Mayor has been lurking outside. He hides when he sees her. Doesn’t he have anything better to do? Not some town Mayor business? She tells herself to get it together and starts sweeping. Mayor thinks outloud that she must be feeling better now. He looks at his watch and blows out a breath. She cried for a whole hour and it's way past lunch time. He gets on his bike and just rides by. She hails him, but he just waves without looking back.

And now I want to punch Dead Face Harpy. Dead Face Harpy is telling Noona all about what Jung Joo did (conning Gun Woo). It’s the second time that she’s been accused of being a con woman. Dead Face Harpy says that Jung Joo pretended to be terminally ill and put Gun Woo in an awkward position. Noona concludes that that must be why he kept taking her side. Dead Face Harpy is ‘surprised.’ Noona says that Gun Woo refused to sell off the restaurant because of Jung Joo... and he told her not to say anything harsh even if she saw Jung Joo.

Dead Face Harpy declares that now that he knows it was all a lie, he should've changed his mind. Looking concerned she adds that she tried calling him because she was so worried, but he's not answering. Yeah, you’re so ‘worried.’ She doesn't know where he is. Sound of opening door and Noona says that Gun Woo is coming right now.

Gun Woo starts to walk by, chugging some water. Noona gets his attention and tells him that Dead Face Harpy says he got scammed. What happened? He looks at her and her face says she’s shameless. He looks at Noona and answers that everything that Dead Face Harpy says is a lie. Dead Face Harpy looks at him, shocked. She squirms as he says that Jung Joo didn't deceive him on purpose. Dead Face Harpy knows that too, but she's talking badly about Jung Joo so Noona will hate her. Wow, he really does have Dead Face Harpy’s number.

Noona looks at Dead Face Harpy and – almost gently – asks if that’s it. Dead Face Harpy says that she must've had the wrong idea. Gun Woo looks at her – his voice hard – and says that a misunderstanding was when he thought Jung Joo was sick. She was caught doing something bad. Don't ever do that again. He walks off. Dead Face Harpy quickly leaves.

Gun Woo reenters the room. Noona scolds him for embarrassing Dead Face Harpy. She’s totally excusing what Dead Face Harpy did. Even if that’s the case, why did he have to embarrass her like that? Really, Noona? What she was doing wasn’t a small thing. It was a big thing. Gun Woo answers that he’s fine with being fooled and letting things go when Dead Face Harpy’s mean to him, but she should learn a lesson when she does that to Jung Joo. Now, there’s a telling statement. He’s okay with being treated badly by her, but he’s not going to let her treat Jung Joo badly. Gun Woo declares that he has to be clear with her so that she doesn't do that again. Noona makes a face like he’s being ridiculous.

Dead Face Harpy is outside the house. She stops and looks behind her. Almost like she’s expecting Gun Woo to come running after her because she acted upset. Gun Woo approaches. What is he doing? She starts walking again, but then stops. She turns and asks why he’s following a liar outside. Even the question is manipulative. He answers that he wasn't following her. And then keeps walking. Dead Face Harpy’s jaw hangs open.

Gun Woo stops and turns around. He asks if she wasn’t taken aback. She was caught red-handed doing something bad. She became flustered because he might get sick of her and leave her. She answers that she was. She'd have been nervous if he just left without trying to stop her. He laughs, but not amused. He answers that he already knows that she’s a mean person. He wouldn't get sick of her over something like this. He wonders if it could be because he’s been so well-trained? If it wasn’t so dysfunctional, this little interchange might have been a little cute.

Dead Face Harpy declares that she didn't even get to eat lunch because she was looking all over for him. Does he want to go eat something? Gun Woo replies that he has to go to the restaurant. Dead Face Harpy reports that it was closed when she went by. Gun Woo’s concerned. Jung Joo wasn't around? Dead Face Harpy says that she must have left, huh? She leaves out the part where the Mayor shooed her away. Gun Woo apologizes and leaves. Heh.

Jung Joo is scrubbing the floor. She stands and stretches and glances toward the dining area. She jumps because Gun Woo is sitting there, watching her. Dork! That smile is back on his face. He is determined that she *not* get over her love sickness. She asks when he got there? He replies that it was just now. I wonder how long, though, really. He adds that he thought she had left, but she’s still there. Ah, keeping with his statement that he would leave her alone to decide what she’s going to do.

She mumbles that she cleaned up the place. So she could organize some things. He asks if the organization went well. Jung Joo approaches and sits across the table from him. He looks so much more relaxed right now. She says that she thought about it... and the order of how she went about things was wrong. Her feelings for him. Rather than getting angry over him getting the wrong idea about her illness and confessing that she started to like him in the midst of it... she should have first thanked him for helping her out.

With deep sincerity, Jung Joo thanks him. Even though there was a misunderstanding, he lent her this restaurant and helped her... And even after he learned the truth, the fact that he’d let her stay... She thanks him again. He asks if by saying thank you that means she’s going to accept. Head held high, Jung Joo answers that it’s shameless and rude of her, but she needs to stay there. She declares that she’ll get over her feelings for him on her own. About 90 percent of it is already taken care of.

Gun Woo asks if 90 percent can happen overnight? Jung Joo says that if there were 100 balloons floating in the sky that represent the misunderstanding (and her affection because of them)... About 90 of them have flown away between yesterday and today. She’ll burst the remaining ones and get rid of them on her own. She tells him to ignore them if they pop up every now and again. Gun Woo starts to smile so he looks away briefly. He is playing this way too cool. She suggests that he could also burst them with harsh words.

Gun Woo make a tsking sound and says he’ll cooperate.

And for those of you interested, when I was trying to come up with the word for the sound he made, I came across this page, where they demonstrate 10 sounds “you need to stop making.” They really have too much time of their hands.

Jung Joo suggests, in the spirit of cooperation, that Gun Woo stay at Hyung’s resort. Matter-of-factly he says that he doesn’t think he can cooperate with that. Noona found out the story about the contract, so soon those words will reach the ears of Hyung and Gun Woo’s certain that Hyung’s marked him as a pathetic punk by now.

Does he know his siblings or what? Hyung says, “What a pathetic punk.” Gun Woo thought Jung Joo was dying and leased the place out for 50 million won? Seriously... Noona asks if the contract would be valid and whether she should check with a lawyer. Hyung says to leave Gun Woo alone. It could be better to leave it to her than losing it all to betting on horse races. The boy is acting more and more mature because of her. Definitely leave him.

Noona can’t believe Hyung is saying to let Jung Joo stay by Gun Woo's side. Hyung replies that Gun Woo has been working hard, doesn't cause trouble and doesn't spend money these days. He declares that Gun Woo is leading an exemplary lifestyle. Noona protests that Gun Woo was nice to Jung Joo because he thought she was sick. But now he’s upstanding and nice to her because he likes her. She sighs and asks who Gun Woo took after to be so soft-hearted? It can't be Mom. Could it be his father? She tsks that idea away. Probably not. His father was supposedly a really horrible person. Note the word: supposedly. Only what Mom – the person she just described as not soft-hearted – has told them.

Hyung censures Noona, using her name. She sighs and says that she’ll be careful. Hyung tells her to be careful not to let anything slip in front of other people. Noona makes a guilty face because she already has let stuff slip… to a nosey writer at that. Hyung says that the story about Gun Woo's father mustn't be made known even for Gun Woo's sake.

Speaking of nosy writer… Mi Ra and her husband – who the cast list says is Park Dong Soo (Choi Sung Min) – are meeting with Jong Bae. She’s told him she wants to write a book set in Sorang Town. Jong Bae tells them to ask anything. He knows everything about the town! Dong Soo asks if Jong Bae remembers the young fisherman who died in a car accident on the coastal road 30 years ago. Jong Bae swallows and asks, “An accident 30 years ago?” Mi Ra says that she heard the young widow was a lady diver. Would she still be around? Mi Ra would really like to meet her for the novel. The joyous zeal with which she’s talking is kind of creepy. I mean, you’re talking about a tragic death like you’re about to take a ride at the amusement park. Jong Bae isn’t smiling now. He says that if Mi Ra writes a novel about a tragedy like that, the townspeople will hate it. She should write about some other topic. A different topic. Uncomfortable shifting by Mi Ra and Dong Soo.

Jong Bae leaves the restaurant and wonders why Mi Ra would want to write a novel about Hae Shil's husband's death? The plot thickens! At least they’re using Mi Ra as a device to get some answers to that nagging question of what really happened with Gun Woo’s dad. Hae Shil gets his attention and tells him to join them for a drink. Jong Bae goes to bring a few more bottles of makgeolli.

Yoo Ja asks Hae Shil if Mr. Song... er, President Song, is going to come and learn how to dive. Not looking up from her food, Hae Shil shakes her head and asks why a resort president would come learn how to dive. Bok Nyeo points out that Hyung could come to see her. Hae Shil says that he won’t; she was mean and harsh to him. But, look who’s off in the distance. Right after she says that, Hyung arrives across the lake. He sadly sighs and decides to leave, but those plastic, granny shoes he wears stub his toe when he kicks a rock. What is with the rocks in the road?

Like dongsaeng, like hyung. Hyung is annoyed at the rock, but more annoyed at Hae Shil. He picks up the rock and heaves it across the water toward her. It gets about halfway and then lands with a huge splash. Yoo Ja starts yelling at him, calling him a rotten bastard for throwing the rock. She threatens him. Hyung hides behind a moped and then scurries away. I wonder if Hae Shil could tell it was him. Jong Bae wonders if it’s the same guy as last time who threw the rock. No, they’re just related. It cracks me up that they don’t communicate in any way about things and yet react similarly to the same situations.

Back at the Warm and Cozy. Jung Joo tells Gun Woo that he should take her area of the loft. It’s much more spacious. Gun Woo nods and says that that’s true. He leans in closely and asks if that means that they’re sleep together starting that night? He is just wrong. He is enjoying teasing her. Too much. This is going to backfire, Gun Woo. Jung Joo sputters to clarify that what she meant was... that she'd sleep on his side and he could sleep on her side. Gun Woo acts like he didn’t realize that and says that he thought that she wanted to combine the rooms. She tells him to use the bigger space and she’ll use the smaller one.

Gun Woo agrees and lays down on her bed as she starts to pack up her stuff. He says that there’s no need for him to give up this comfort for her when she isn’t even sick. After a moment, he sits up and tells her to forget it. She should use that bed. He likes it over there. She asks why. He says that on her side, he can’t protect his privacy. From his bed, he can see everything going on over on her side. Little Jung Joo freak out. He can see everything on this side over there?! He nods and says that she doesn’t close the curtain well. Then, he can see everything. He is so wrong.

Jung Joo puts her hands across her body like she’s naked and asks what he’s seen. Gun Woo laughs and asks if she thinks that he’d look, just because he can see? He's not someone without manners! He adds that when he could see, he closed his eyes for her. He heads to his bed. Jung Joo huffs at him and pulls her curtains closed, with emphasis. He calls to her that even if she closes the curtain, he can still see everything. He made an effort to see everything so far. That gets her to open the curtain back up. What has he seen?!

Slowly, with emphasis, Gun Woo says ‘Lee Jung Joo.’ Lee Jung Joo who wakes up early every morning. Lee Jung Joo who runs around until late at night. Lee Jung Joo who works hard every day. He thought she was really amazing. She didn't even know when she might die, but she was working so hard. So when he was watching her, he felt like he shouldn't waste his life. Heart pains, that’s so sweet! Should he say, he respected her a bit? That’s one of the nicest compliments… Watching you, I felt like I shouldn’t waste my life…

Jung Joo’s face says that she likes that answer. She says that since they’ve gotten rid of the misunderstanding, does he think life isn't that big a deal? Gun Woo ‘thinks’ and says that if about 100 floating balloons of his respect for her were because of that misunderstanding... only about 10 of those may have burst. Even better. Wow, Dead Face Harpy is an idiot, because Gun Woo, when he likes you, is super sweet. Jung Joo can’t stifle her smile at that. So all that affection that you were picking up… it’s still there.

Gun Woo says that since 90 of those balloons are still floating around… he likes that he still works at the Warm and Cozy with her. Jung Joo says to make sure that no more of those balloons of respect burst, she’ll do her best. She bids him good night and closes the curtain again. Gun Woo can’t help but laugh now. The big smile stays on his face. He closes his curtains, too. Jung Joo sits on her bed and thinks about what he said: Respect. She smiles at it, at first, and then sighs. They both lay down to sleep.

The next day, Poong San asks Gun Woo if Jung Joo is like Queen Seondeok? How can he just respect her? The implication of the question is a diffident affection for a monarch rather than actual like. Poong San tells him to be honest. Has he ever looked at her as a woman? Gun Woo chides him and asks if Poong San thinks he’s do that to a dying woman. Poong San replies that now that he knows that she isn't sick – big smile spreads on his face – Gun Woo can see her as a woman then. Conspiratorially, Poong San asks if things are going to change between them now? Gun Woo makes a face and asks what will change. Jung Joo doesn't have anywhere else to go and he’d like it if Jung Joo stays there. Everything stays the same. Poong San’s face sours. Gun Woo declares that *nothing* will change! Methinks he doth protest too much.

Jung Joo goes to the store room. One of the lights starts to flicker. She starts looking for a bulb. Gun Woo enters, carrying a bottle of wine, and asks what she’s doing. When she explains, he tells her to leave it. He’ll do it. He is taller, so he’ll be able to reach the bulb easily. Jung Joo knows there’s bulbs somewhere. Reaching above her, she grabs a bag of flour to move it and the contents of the bag empty on her head. She shrieks. As would anyone.

Gun Woo hurries over to help her shake the flour out of her hair. He asks if she’s okay. He tells her to let him take a look, so she stands there, eyes closed (since there’s flour that can get in them) and mouth pinched (or puckered, if you like) shut. Gun Woo tastes the white stuff and it’s not flour but powdered sugar. He smiles, leans a little closer and tells her that she became really sweet. She wipes some off her forehead (eyes still closed) and tastes it. She laughs, a big smile across her face, and says that it’s really sweet.

She starts to twitch and asks him to blow on the right side of her face. She got some in her eye. Gun Woo is happy to help. He leans in and starts blowing and then stops… because she looks really kissable right now. I mean, her eyes are closed. He asks himself, “Is it different?” Uh, yes. Because you are. She asks if it’s sweet. He looks at her and answers yes – and it’s obvious that he’s not talking about the sugar but her. His hand is still hovering next to her cheek.

Jung Joo tells him that it'll get sticky. He considers her for a moment and answers that it could be if it keeps going. He realizes what he’s doing and clears his throat, tousling her hair vigorously. She coughs. He steps away and tells her she can shake it off now. And open her eyes, too! I read a comment where someone said that the leads have no chemistry. I don’t know what show they’re watching, but I’m fanning myself a bit right now.

Gun Woo exits the store room, frowning and stops, looking at the powdered sugar on his hand. He glances back at Jung Joo, who is still cleaning herself off. He looks back at his hand – and the realization of his feelings is sinking in. Scrunching his eyes shut, he shakes his head and vigorously claps his hands together to get the sugar off.

Hae Shil arrives at diving school. Hyung approaches, wearing an outfit that you’d wear to go diving. Plus a camo hoodie. And those footies that have toes in them. What is with his shoe choice? He wears a chagrinned look. She frowns and asks why he’s there. He says that he was accepted into this school and paid the tuition, too. But haven’t been coming to class. Okay.

Hae Shil tells him to stop kidding around. She told him it was over. He replies that he was never kidding and he’ll decide when it's over. That’s kind of stalkerish. Someone like him was thrown into the water by someone like her. Again with the ‘I’m superior’ stuff. He really needs to stop talking down to her. Does she think he'll be happy to accept that as the end and give up? Hyung declares that it’s a matter of pride.

Hae Shil is not amused. Did he come there as a matter of pride? Hyung says that he did. When she acknowledges that he’s a black pearl and accept how very precious and important he is, that's when he will give it to her and take it away from her. Wow, Hyung. Haven’t you learned that this pride doesn’t work? And it is true about you. Unfortunately, you’re talking about your worth because of your money, rather than you, the person. Hae Shil tells him to go ahead and try. See if she accepts his heart after he takes it away and gives it back. Hyung looks a little scared right then. Hae Shil grabs her diving mask and goes inside the school.

Jung Joo spots him and recognizes him. President Song? He’s Gun Woo's older brother, right? He remembers her and her name. He says that it’s nice to see her. He’s her classmate. (And Korean for classmate is ‘classmate.’) Jung Joo wasn’t expecting that. Gun Woo wouldn’t be either.

They’re down by the water with their other classmates. Hyung has told Jung Joo everything. So he came to school just for Teacher Hae Shil. Hyung says that he was ready to face her when he came there, but if she could please keep this a secret from Gun Woo. Jung Joo smiles and motions locking her lips shut.

Hae Shil walks down to the water. Hyung tells Jung Joo that they should work together. She responds that she’ll do her best and push him towards Teacher Hae Shil! Hyung declares that Jung Joo is someone he can talk to! They give each other a high five!

Mayor is there, talking to Hae Shil about something. Hyung is watching her as he stretches. Which means that he’s really stretching weirdly. It’s amusing. He tells the group that from now on, for all the seafood they catch during class, he’ll serve them with the best chef's cooking and the best champagne. And I shake my head. Hasn’t he realized that she’s not going to be won by money? The class likes that idea.

Hyung continues: With that in mind, whatever they catch, let's say that he caught it. He'll give them five times the market price. Just wrong. And from any competition during class… help him so that he can take first place. Any day he takes the first place... he’ll give them ten times the market price! Class really likes that idea and starts clapping and cheering, which gets Mayor’s and Hae Shil’s attention. Jung Joo awkwardly smiles and quietly asks Hyung if he isn’t being a bit too greedy? He responds that there isn’t a teacher who hates their top student. But cheating can get you expelled.

TV reporters arrive. A Jeju TV station is interviewing them today. Looking at the reporter, Hyung remembers her interviewing him recently. He immediately turns around to hide his face. Which won’t draw attention to him, at all… I roll my eyes. Reporter introduces herself and asks them to help with the shoot today. Clapping. Hyung reaches down for hood and puts it on to hide his face. Then he puts on his pink diving mask. And I laugh. Hae Shil notices and looks at him like he is the strangest person alive.

Camera man pans around. All the other students want to be seen, except for Hyung. Reporter says that he must be really shy. They’ll be recording him for a bit. Hyung reaches down, face completely away from the camera, and grabs his floatation device and walks into the sea. Reporter wants to know why he’s acting like that. Hae Shil tells Reporter to not shoot him. When Hyung sees Reporter not focused on him, he dives in the water and starts to swim away, shouting that he’s going home early today! That makes Hae Shil chuckle.

Beautiful Jeju scenery. Different shot of Halla Mountain. So pretty. Students training. Reporter has them introduce themselves and say how they feel about diving. Sam introduces himself – his last name is Okyere and he’s from Ghana. Another student declares that it's really fun and amazing. Her companion – who is quite handsome – won’t look at the camera. Jung Joo ends up paired with Mayor, whose hand is shaking quite strongly as it grasps the mike. Heh. Jung Joo grabs it to help him look less nervous. Reporters asks them to talk about the Jeju lady divers. Jung Joo says that the spirit of Jeju lady divers that helped them overcome challenging working conditions should continue to be inherited. And it looks like they’re holding hands.

Hyung is waiting outside the school for Hae Shil to finish. She’s surprised to see him. He sighs. They go to a spot overlooking the ocean. He asks what he should do to make her feel better? Aw. Hyung’s starting to be a little humble. Hae Shil tells him not to try so hard. Staring out at the sea, she says that she was upset... at herself, not him. She lived with pride, diving her whole life. But on that day... she became nothing in a second. It’s very true. She’s a woman with a strong sense of pride.

Hyung sits next to her and says that if she stays with him, he’ll never let that happen. Hae Shil looks at him and says that she could become glamorous by standing next to you, but she'll be more insignificant once he’s gone. Wow, that’s sad that she already expects to lose him, like her last love. She calls him, ‘Mr. Black Pearl’ and says that he’s not hers. He answers that for him, every time he opens his eyes and takes a shower (and shower is shower in Korean), he tries holding his breath. She said that she holds it until it stops here. He taps his chest. He adds that he tries it to see every day. Now he can hold it for more than a minute.

He tells her to test him. When she doesn’t move, he takes her hand and places it over his nose and mouth and holds it there. She tells him to breathe and not try. She tries to pull her hand away, but he pulls her into a kiss instead, holding her head. She fights him for a moment but then gives into the kiss… for a moment. Then she realizes what she’s doing and breaks free, slapping him. They stare at each other. Hyung finally says that if she’s afraid of having it taken away, it means that she already has it. She already accepted his heart. Now that was smooth. And true. Hae Shil’s going to cry, so she gets up and quickly walks away. Hyung lets her go.

Reporter and her crew have gone with Mayor to the Warm and Cozy to eat. The trio (Gun Woo, Jung Joo and Poong San) are in the kitchen area. She tells Gun Woo, excited, that she had an interview today. She was filmed for a really long time. Being a cold fish, since it’s not him that made it happen but the Mayor… Gun Woo replies that it doesn’t matter if she was filmed for a long time. Once it's edited, it's over. Meaning that she’ll get cut out. Jung Joo replies that she did the interview with Mayor, so she won't be edited out completely. Gun Woo doesn’t like that either. Gun Woo asks who she is to interview with the mayor as a set. Jung Joo replies that Mayor asked her to do it together as the representative of the school! She glares at Gun Woo and takes their guests from chilled kimchi broth.

Poong San and Gun Woo watch her interact with Mayor and his party – who invite her to eat with them. Both are frowning. Poong San declares that Mayor is too nice to Jung Joo. Jung Joo agrees to sit with them for a little while and ends up next to Mayor. Gun Woo really doesn’t like that. Poong San says that the best way to become a complete Jeju resident is to get married to a Jeju local. Gun Woo looks back over at Jung Joo with Mayor, frowning. Poong San adds that Jung Joo is determined to live there until she dies, so it'd be good if it works out with Mayor. Doesn't Gun Woo think so? He is such a matchmaker!

Clearly bothered, Gun Woo tries to look non-plussed. He answers Poong San that he supposes that it's not impossible. Poong San asks if Gun Woo doesn't like the idea. Gun Woo answers, asking why he wouldn’t. He tells Poong San to take something to the table with Mr. and Mrs. Town Mayor. Jung Joo yells over to them to give her one more salad for Mayor! Gun Woo passes a plate to Poong San and tells him to take the salad over to Mrs. Mayor. He doesn’t notice one of the crew standing nearby, overhearing him call Jung Joo ‘Mrs. Mayor.’ Uh-oh.

Mayor is waiting outside the Warm and Cozy. Gun Woo comes out. Gun Woo frowns and waits for Mayor to talk. Mayor offers him the producer's business card from earlier. They might want to shoot the Warm and Cozy, so Gun Woo should keep it. Gun Woo takes the card and looks at it. He asks, pointedly, if Mayor takes care of residents' business PR, too? Mayor answers that it’s not that. He’s doing his best to make a good impression on Jung Joo. Shouldn’t have said that.

Gun Woo responds that Mayor should give it to Jung Joo directly. Why is Mayor giving it to him? Mayor says that Gun Woo knows that he wants to make a good impression on Jung Joo. He’s asking Gun Woo for help. He lost the necklace last time because of an uncooperative Baek Gun Woo. He’s thinking of getting a ring next time, so please make sure to cooperate with him then. Dang! Mayor, you’re moving fast. You haven’t even taken her out on a real date. Mayor walks off with an irritated look on his face. Gun Woo looks a little worried as he thinks that Jung Joo could really become Mrs. Town Mayor.

Jung Joo sits at her vanity and notices the card. She asks Gun Woo what the card is about. He answers that it’s the producer's business card and Mayor told him to give it to her. Jung Joo thinks for a minute and then hurries over to Gun Woo, excited. She guesses that they want to film them for a good restaurant segment from the program! She’s super excited and, as she holds up her hands for a high ten, she asks if he’s happy too. He snaps that he’s not. Because it’s the Mayor who made it happen. Jealous boy.

He tries to walk away, but she grabs his arm. She tells him that even if he isn’t, he has to cooperate with her on this. Gun Woo huffs and asks why people keep telling him to cooperate with them? He practically yells that he’s a really uncooperative person to begin with! He is really annoyed.

Later, Jong Bae tells Gun Woo that Mr. Warm and Cozy should cooperate with them. Gun Woo sputters, “What now? What, what? How should I cooperate?" Jong Bae says that Gun Woo wanted to sell the restaurant. He’ll do his best and sell it for Gun Woo, so Gun Woo can stop worrying and go back to Seoul. And leave the lady from Seoul behind. Gun Woo responds that he’s not selling! Gun Woo asks if Mayor asked Jong Bae to get him kicked out of town. Jong Bae declares that marrying off Mayor is a dream project that all of the townspeople are supporting. Gun Woo laughs with annoyed disbelief.

Jong Bae declares that with the interview on TV as their chance this time, they decided to push mayor with all their might again. Gun Woo retorts that if anyone heard Jong Bae, they might think that the pair applied to be on 'We Got Married.' Jong Bae says that the programs about to start. They’re all going to watch it together. Does Gun Woo want to come and watch, too? Gun Woo asks why he would watch it? He’s not curious at all! Sure you’re not. You know you're going to go.

A crowd has gathered. They get excited to see Hae Shil… and Sam… Yoo Ja says his name about 5 times. Mayor is on. Gun Woo arrives but hovers in the background. Screen caption reads: [New student and Mrs. Mayor Lee Jung Joo] And I am rolling at how horrible it is. Mayor stops chewing his sandwich. Jung Joo is confused. Gun Woo can’t believe what he’s seeing. Shot of Jung Joo and Mayor, smiling, telling the Jeju lady divers, fighting! Big caption reads: [Mr. and Mrs. Town Mayor Hwang Wook] It totally looks like they’re some cute married couple.

One of the townspeople declares that Jung Joo and Mayor are the perfect mayor couple! Mayor quickly turns off the TV and looks at Jung Joo. She has no idea how that happened. In JD, Jong Bae asks Mayor what happened. Did he tell them that they’re husband and wife? Waving his hands ‘no,’ Mayor protests that he never did! There must've been a mistake. Gun Woo can’t believe that this is happening. Or that Mayor is lying about not telling the TV station that Jung Joo is Mrs. Mayor. Even though it was Gun Woo who planted that seed. Mayor answers his phone and immediately starts telling the caller that he didn't get married! The TV station made a mistake!

Next thing we see is Mayor and Jung Joo at one of Mayor’s elders houses. Jung Joo sips some tea and chokes on it. Uncle1 says, “How beautiful.” He tells Jung Joo to please take good care of their Wook. No more, no less, just four kids. Mayor stops him and tells him that Jung Joo is just a town resident. Jung Joo adds that it was an error on the program. Uncle declares that he was almost happy.

Later, when it’s just the two of them, Mayor apologizes. The elders of the family kept saying that they'd only believe it if they heard it from her in person. She tells him it’s not his fault. If he needs to explain again, she’ll help. Mayor – trying to sound very casual – says that it’s awkward to explain it to the elders... should they just... get married? He did not just do that. Jung Joo isn’t sure she heard him right. He slides closer – and why do I feel like they would have believed it, but Mayor talked the Elders into having to speak with Jung Joo? – and says that he just kept saying if she’d marry him... He smiles and asks if he asked her to really marry me... would she marry him?

Jung Joo’s a little slack-jawed. She tells him that there is someone she likes. Which he already knows. Awkward blinking between them – as Mayor tries to figure out how he’s going to get out of this one. I bet he thought he was being totally smooth in setting it all up. Forehead smack. Eventually, he playfully hits her arm and unconvincingly says that he was joking! How can she answer so seriously? She’s embarrassing him! Jung Joo doesn’t know what to do now.

The Warm and Cozy. Gun Woo is on phone, telling the TV station that if they make that kind of mistake, they should report the correction! Reporter says that they apologized to Mayor and Jung Joo. Gun Woo protests that this can't be done with just an apology! A single lady just became a married woman in an instant! Reporter says that their assistant producer heard the staff at the Sorang Town restaurant call her Mrs. Mayor. That's why he did it. Gun Woo wants to know what restaurant. He nearly jumps out of his chair when she says the Warm and Cozy! Reporter starts to say that they can go and talk to the staff, but Gun Woo quickly hangs up because he realizes that it’s *his* fault. He cringes and smacks the back of his head hard, calling himself an idiot! Yup.

Later, the trio are working and Poong San wonders where the talk of the couple came from, like out of nowhere? Gun Woo concentrates hard on the napkins he’s holding. Poong San asks if Jung Joo is okay with it. Jung Joo says that Mayor is in an awkward situation. He has a lot of family members. Everyone must've been really happy for him. Jung Joo confesses that she was a little envious that he has a lot of family members who care for him. Poong San tells her if she’s envious, she should get married to someone with lots of family members. I’m surprised they didn’t show Gun Woo grimace here. Jung Joo replies that she wants to get married to someone with a big family later. Gun Woo looks at her.

Jung Joo says that it'll be nice to be loved by good parents. Gun Woo makes a scoffing noise and says that Jung Joo never had that. How does she know if it'll be nice? A little defensive, Gun Woo? Jung Joo answers back that she never had it, so she’s envious. She really wants it even if it's later. Is she listening to herself? Gun Woo has no parents and you like him. Shouldn’t you *not* be saying this? He asks why she’s waiting. There’s the mayor with a big family! Go to him now! He throws his napkins at her and stalks off.

Gun Woo is back in the storeroom, looking at some of the wine. Jung Joo enters and says that what he said sounds good, too. Mayor said it too. Since this already happened, they shouldn't go around explaining ourselves but she should just marry him. She is wrong. Without looking at her, Gun Woo tells her that that's great! Congratulations, Mrs. Mayor! She frowns. Because she wanted him to say something else. Which he would really like to say but he’s being a butthead.

Jung Joo smiles and cheerfully says that it'll be really nice to become Mrs. Mayor. She hope that Gun Woo will cooperate with them from now on. There’s that word again. Gun Woo turns around and repeats that: Cooperate? Is that really what she wants? She looks at him but doesn’t say anything. Gun Woo walks over to her, and places his hands on either side of her. He leans on the wall, leaning into her, so that she’s basically pinned there. Wow, I would be majorly uncomfortable. Frozen screen shot makes it totally look like he’s about to kiss her. There’s only about 2 inches between their noses.

Jung Joo avoids his gaze. Gun Woo sucks some air through his teeth and tells her that he doesn’t think what she want is to be Mrs. Mayor. There can’t be just 10 balloons remaining. He smiles and raps her lightly on the forehead. Then he walks off. She sighs, because he’s right.

That night, Gun Woo can’t sleep. He gets up and calls someone he knows: Kim Min Gi. He said he’s doing a food program at a TV station, right? Does he want to come to Jeju Island? He has an awesome item for Min Gi.

Switch to Min Gi meeting with Gun Woo and Jung Joo at the resort. Gun Woo explains that Min Gi is a producer for a TV food program. He declares that her wish of being on air could come true. She looks at him and reminds him that he says he didn't want it. Gun Woo answers that she said she wanted it. He’s making a sacrifice. She smiles at that. Min Gi asks if Jung Joo’s attending the lady diver school? That's very interesting.

Min Gi asks if it matters to Jung Joo if she’s on TV as Gun Woo's live-in partner? Gun Woo remains straight-faced. Jung Joo says that they’re business partners. Gun Woo asks if it wouldn’t be nice to go on air nationally that way? He is so wrong. Not just local TV, but *national* TV. It'll be a clear explanation to all the family members of the mayor, too. She asks if he would be okay with it? He replies that if she needs it, then he'll make the sacrifice. Jung Joo says that she’ll have to think about it and excuses herself to go to the bathroom.

In the bathroom, Jung Joo mutters at Gun Woo’s mixed signals. What the heck. He congratulated her for being Mrs. Mayor. But there he goes again. Outside, Min Gi asks Gun Woo what happened. He said he hated being on TV. So wrong. Gun Woo answers that he just needs it. He also made a mistake.

Min Gi spots Dead Face Harpy across the pool. He tells Gun Woo that the guy she is with is Kim Min Seok. He kind of looks like the kid from diving school. He had a big hit with a gaming business. He's finally meeting with Dead Face Harpy. Min Gi is impressed. Gun Woo asks what Min Gi means. Min Gi explains that Min Seok approached Dead Face Harpy in the past, but got rejected completely, so he said he'd get back at her someday. He became really successful and he must be getting back at her. Dead Face Harpy is finally recognizing him since he became rich, but Min Gi is sure Min Seok has a scenario to completely humiliate her.

Dead Face Harpy and the guy get up and leave. Gun Woo follows them. He calls Dead Face Harpy’s name. Guy asks who Gun Woo is and Dead Face Harpy gives her standard line that this is just an old friend. Gun Woo isn’t having it today. Gun Woo tells Guy to get lost. Dead Face Harpy is not going with him. Guy looks at Dead Face Harpy and, like he could care less, tells her to do whatever she wants. Dead Face Harpy tells Gun Woo to stay out of her business. She’s leaving.

Dead Face Harpy starts to get in the car. Gun Woo grabs the door and keeps it from closing – smashing his fingers in the door in the process. Ouch. He opens the door and pulls Dead Face Harpy out of the car. He tells Guy to go and don’t show up in front of Dead Face Harpy. Guy drives off.

Dead Face Harpy yells at Gun Woo. He responds, asking her is she’s nervous about something these days? Since she came back from New York after her engagement ended, she’s trying too hard. She glares at him and asks if he’s going to criticize her now? Gun Woo answers that he can't cheer for her. She doesn’t respond. He tells her that she’s really greedy, right? He can't cheer for her while he watches her, but she should keep the standards he can understand. That's the least consideration she can have for him. She walks off. Jung Joo has watched the whole thing.

Gun Woo rubs his hand. Jung Joo approaches him. When he says her name, it sounds like he’s pleading with her to understand. They’ve found a bench and Jung Joo is manipulating his hand. She says that his bones seem to be fine. She puts a water bottle on it to ease the pain. She asks if he likes someone like Dead Face Harpy that much? His friend said it too... that she's greedy and pretentious... She meets with all the guys to pick the one to her taste.

Gun Woo smiles slightly and says that that’s exactly what people blabbered about his mom. But Dead Face Harpy said to him… “What's so bad about it? Your mom is cool!” She said she wanted to live like his mom. She probably wants to meet a guy who has a lot of money like his mom did and meet a really famous guy, too... That's how she probably is. That explains a lot of why he puts up with Dead Face Harpy. He thinks she’s misunderstood, like his Mom. And that was pretty cool of her, to tell him that she admired someone he did but it’s someone who other people revile. That had to mean a lot. Not that I like her now.

Jung Joo asks what he’s going to do. Even if she lives like his mom and comes back to him, will he accept her? Gun Woo smiles and says that that's what his father supposedly did for his mom. His face changes to one more determined than happy as he says that he decided that he’d like Dead Face Harpy to the very end. That's what he’s going to do. Go burst some of those balloons, Gun Woo.

Jung Joo nods and tells him to do whatever he wants. Who cares if he keeps being in pain and getting hurt? She yanks her water bottle back and shoves it in between them. He whines that it hurts. She stands and tells him to go see a doctor. She’s leaving. He protests that she should go with him. She promised that she'd stay with him when he’s sick. Strongly, almost yelling, she yells him that, no, she definitely doesn't want to! Gun Woo looks at her like he can’t believe it. She tells him to just be in pain all alone until it hurts like death. She goes. Dude, why would you say that you’re going to like Dead Face Harpy to the end when you know you’re developing feelings for her? Mixed signals!

It’s dark when Jung Joo gets back to the Warm and Cozy. Mayor is standing outside waiting for her. Doesn’t he have anything better to do? She surprised to see him. They sit on one of the outside benches. He says that his uncle looked like he'd run over to the restaurant, so he came because he was worried. Jung Joo says that it got bigger than she thought it would.

Since it happened... should she just leave Jeju Island? Now, that’s more because of Gun Woo the dolt than this… He looks at her, stunned. Why would she say that all of a sudden? Jung Joo says that she’s having a hard time these days... so she wants to run away... He tells her that she doesn’t know Jeju Island’s real value yet. There are still so many great, nice places that she doesn't know about. He’ll tell her them one by one. As she get to know them, one by one... she will never want to leave Jeju Island. Mayor says that he’d like to create reasons that she should stay here. She asks why he would do that for her?

Suddenly, Mayor stands up and – with a wrist grab – pulls her to her feet. He declares that she’s Miss Lee Jung Joo who doesn't usually understand what he means! He’s holding onto her right now. He’ll be nice to her... so please stay here. His face is really intense. Now, that’s a love declaration. She doesn’t know what to say, so she just stands there, uncomfortable. Mayor lets go of her wrist. I’m surprised there’s not bruises, from how tight he was grabbing it.

And Gun Woo has watched the whole thing. He looks at his bandaged hand, not happy.

Eventually, Jung Joo goes inside the Warm and Cozy. Gun Woo is sitting at one of the tables. He doesn’t look happy. Frankly, he looks a little wounded, that she would consider liking someone else. He doesn’t say anything. She approaches and asks if he went to the doctor. Monosyllabic: Yes. Does it hurt a lot? He looks at her now. Again, just ‘yes.’ He adds that she told him to hurt like death. It became really painful. Double speak again. Jung Joo apologizes and says that she’s sorry. He was really nice to her because he thought she was sick. But she can't do that for him. A pause and he says that he knows. Even after he found out that she wasn’t sick, he’s being really nice to her.

Jung Joo sits across from Gun Woo and tells him not to be nice to her anymore. He looks at her and asks why. She replies that her expectation will decrease only when he’s not nice to her. So keep being nice, Gun Woo! The balloons will burst only when her expectation becomes small. She doesn't want to leave Jeju; she wants to live a good life there. So don't be nice to her. She gets up and starts to go upstairs. Gun Woo has to swallow that.

He stands up and declares that he doesn't want to. She stops and looks at him. He says that he's going to be nice to her. He’ll be much nicer to her. He’ll be totally nice to her. So don’t become okay, Lee Jung Joo. And I want to shake him because it’s a love declaration without being a love declaration. Gun Woo! She’s starting to give up.

Episode ends.

Thoughts

Well, our episode ends with a love declaration that isn’t a love declaration and leaves me feeling frustrated.

I see trouble coming – and not just because the Mayor has declared himself and Jung Joo’s almost to the point where she’s going to give up hope for Gun Woo and to start considering it. Why? Because Gun Woo has laid a troublesome bed. What do I mean?
  1. He has a history of sending mixed signals. Throughout their relationship, Jung Joo has taken his acts of kindness as the seeds of love interest. The conversation and her confession at the beginning of the episode where she says that she took his kindness for love interest and she liked that he liked her both illustrate this.
    1. Part of Gun Woo’s problem has been that he HAS liked her, but he’s clueless to his own heart.
    2. Because he’s liked her and acts jealous, he will do things that non-verbally communicate this.
    3. But, because he’s clueless, when she starts to get hopeful, he totally denies it.
    4. Mixed Signals.
  2. Now that the misunderstanding is cleared up, he hasn’t gone as far to clarify that he didn’t just do things for her out of pity, but out of friendship and affection.
    1. His glee over buying the diving goggles for her is not something you experience because of compassion.
    2. His wanting her first catch to cook with was not out of pity. It was because it was significant and meaningful for her and he wanted to be the one to cook it.
    3. His hunting for an excuse to move back in. He made it sound like he got kicked out and was there because of his concern, when in reality, he was wracking his brain trying to think of something that would give him an excuse (example – sunglasses).
    4. His making a special display for the shells of the first things she caught. Again, he did it because he was proud of her and it meant something, not just because it would be a nice gesture.
    5. His arm-wrestling for a necklace is not something you do, especially since the goal is her getting it; if that was the case, he would have just let Mayor do it, but instead *he* had to be the one to give it to her.
    6. His refusal of the bigger space. He gives her some excuse that he prefers the other bed, but really it’s because he wants her to have the nicer area.
    7. His description of his respect for her was based on her perseverance facing death, rather than just a general respect for her now.
  3. Because he didn’t clarify things, she’s going to interpret it all through the pity lens BECAUSE she was misinterpreting it before.
    1. She misread it and thought action = love interest.
    2. She’s discovered and been told that action = misunderstanding.
    3. Therefore, action ≠ love interest.
    4. In reality, it started action = misunderstanding, but evolved into its present state of action = love interest.
    5. Because the rejection hurts, even though intellectually she knows it wasn’t intentional, she is going to fight to guard her heart from making the same mistake again.
  4. Even in this episode, he’s sending mixed signals.
    1. He encourages her to hook up with the mayor and then wants to go on national TV as her live-in partner.
    2. He wants to go on national television declaring that they’re living together and in the next moment, he’s defending Dead Face Harpy from someone and getting hurt in the process
    3. How is anyone, let alone Jung Joo, supposed to believe that he likes her, when he chases after DFH and defends her to the point of physically hurting himself?
    4. I think that he might have gotten away with it, she would have been able to rationalize it away, if he hadn’t have hurt himself. That sends a pretty strong message.
    5. And then he says that he’s going to love DFH (for the 3rd time), regardless of her behavior and how he ends up being treated, until his dying breath.
    6. Not only is this devotion inspired by DFH, but it’s even more inspired by his mother. How can you compete with that?
    7. Plus, even times when he is into something, he says the exact opposite because he’s feeling jealous. Example: Jung Joo on TV.
  5. When he’s not sending mixed signals, he still does things that communicate that he’s not interested and that he doesn’t see her as a woman.
    1. He’s told her that he doesn’t see her that way.
    2. He’s told her that he knew she liked him and it felt burdensome.
    3. He’s told her that knowledge of her interest doesn’t affect him at all (in the love department).
    4. He acts like her affection is a passing fancy, rather than deep emotion.
    5. He intentionally plays with her emotions so that he can tease her about it and say that he’s not serious.
    6. He’s told her that he had the opportunity to gaze at her clothes-less but didn’t. Insecurity would make a girl wonder why not. Was she too repulsive to attract his attention? Or did he not ever think of her that way?
    7. Throughout their relationship, he’s vigorously denied any real affection beyond friendship for her.
    8. He tells other people – like Poong San – that he’s not interested.
    9. Even though he just told her that he’s hers forever, after the emotional moment, he doesn’t repeat his commitment to her, so it’s easy to dismiss.
    10. When she makes her confession, instead of reacting to it, he teases her about it and uses it to give her a hard time.
    11. This all adds up to major doubt on Jung Joo’s part.
  6. As a learned defense mechanism, he hides any real attachment or (returned) affection to avoid being hurt.
    1. When he refuses to cooperate with moving out, instead of saying that it’s because he wants to stay, he says that it’s because Hyung won’t let him.
    2. When they talk about her interest in him, he acts like he’s indifferent and like it’s no big deal.
    3. He acts like losing it wouldn’t bother him in the least (up until the very last minute of the episode).
    4. He doesn’t show her the times where he’s stepping away from his dysfunctional relationship with DFH – like when he busted DFH with Noona and defended Jung Joo instead
    5. He goes as far as to tell her that he’ll help her get over him and leaves the Warm and Cozy so that she can work on getting over him.
    6. He acts like her leaving the Warm and Cozy wouldn’t bother him in the least.
      1. When they were discussing the misunderstanding, the whole reason he says that she should stay is because she worked hard and brought in customers, not because she makes his day better by being there.
      2. Later, when he’s ‘asleep’ and she is making her love confession and says that it’s why she has to leave now, he rolls over and acts like she’s being silly. Not only that, but he teases her on top of it.
    7. When he starts to feel something – the powdered sugar moments – he shakes it off and acts like nothing happened.
    8. He snuck in to watch the news report but didn’t let anyone know that he was there. It looks like he didn’t care, even though it was important to her.
    9. He calls the TV station to demand a retraction, but does it where no one knows.
    10. When she acts like she might be interested in Mayor, he encourages her and acts like he doesn’t care.
On the Hyung front, he got closer to Hae Shil – he even kissed her – admitting that she likes him back, but she still isn’t going to accept him. She shoved him into a pool. She slapped him after he kissed her. He’s started showing signs of humility – standing before her unrequested, asking her what he should do to fix things – but his go-to style with her is to stress his money-value, rather than his person-value and to devalue her accomplishments and things she takes pride in.

We got more of her backstory. Not only did she tragically lose her husband when she was only 19, it was car accident that was caused by someone.

I was struck by how much Hyung and Gun Woo are similar in their relationships with women:
  1. Both of them started out, out of touch with their affections for the other person
  2. When they did realize their interest, they didn’t confess. Instead they talked about how much the woman was interested in them.
  3. Both of them were condescending in a way when they did it, too.
  4. Both of them are over-confident in the girl’s interest, sure that it’s not going to be chased off by something stupid they did, or because of their indifference
  5. Both of them, when the women tell them to give up, refuse, but then don’t admit the real reason why they’re refusing to end things
  6. Both of them try to do things in secret to impress their love interest (Hyung and the fish; Gun Woo and the TV segment which would be *national* rather than local)
  7. Both of them spy on their interests
  8. Both of them, in the same location, after spying on their girl and stubbing their toe on a rock, hurl that rock toward the girl out of irritation that she isn’t returning their affection. That one was the clincher for me.
I mentioned before how Gun Woo called DFH out in front of Noona. It’s just one of many things that have signaled for me Gun Woo’s changing affections:
  1. Rebuking DFH in front of Noona for lying about Jung Joo in order to manipulate the situation in her favor and to get Noona to hate Jung Joo
  2. When DFH told him that he’d been manipulated into thinking that Jung Joo was sick, so that she could use him, his reaction was different:
    1. He didn’t buy it.
    2. He didn’t look at her.
    3. He pulled away from her when she tried to lead him away.
    4. He didn’t ever doubt that Jung Joo didn’t manipulate him.
    5. He told Jung Joo that he was hers forever.
  3. He has started ignoring DFH when she competes with Jung Joo:
    1. The shopping trip to Seoul – yes, he was an idiot to go, but he cut it off as soon as he could so that he could get back to Jung Joo.
    2. If he is in the middle of something involving Jung Joo, now he keeps going instead of getting detained by DFH.
    3. DFH, after their ‘fight’, wants them to go eat, but because he needs to go see if Jung Joo left the Warm and Cozy, he turns her down.
  4. DFH has called him and he ignores the call instead of acting like he’s waiting by the phone for her to contact him.
  5. After their ‘fight’ – when he called her out for lying – he didn’t chase after her to make up.
  6. The way he talks to DFH is changing:
    1. He isn’t pleading with her for her affection. At times, he’s downright indifferent.
    2. He’s started talking to her like he knows that he’s being manipulated and he knows that they’re playing a game. I mean, he calls himself well-trained.
    3. When he saves her from the Guy, he calls her out on being nervous and that she’s trying too hard – that’s not looking at her with rose-colored glasses.
  7. When Jung Joo talks badly about DFH, he doesn’t defend DFH but agrees with what Jung Joo is saying
Swoony moments (those times where I had to fan myself because of the palpable chemistry):
  1. Powder sugar being sticky. How he was looking at her. Phew!
  2. Trapping her in the storeroom and leaning in. Again the look and his voice!
  3. His love declaration.
  4. Only 10 of his 100 balloons have burst.
There was a lot of double meaning in our episode today, but this time, it wasn’t just Jung Joo that was doing it. It was Gun Woo, too. (Is the drama trying to say that the only time that people are capable of talking with double meanings is when they’re in love?) And because Gun Woo doesn’t obviously do subtext – because he does do it, it’s very subtle at times, but it’s there – Jung Joo is totally missing it. Plus, his actions are contradicting what he’s saying, which, for Jung Joo, means she is not going to believe it.

They’re killing me!
