Asleep, Jung Joo laughs happily. Then the alarm goes off. And she’s going to think that it was just a dream. She sits up and stretches and turns off her phone alarm. She doesn’t even notice that she’s wearing his jacket, just throws it off of her. She spots the Lease Agreement, taped back together.
She goes downstairs and asks if he taped the Lease Agreement back together. He says that he did. She looks at it and says that she thought she ripped it up. She must've brought it back home. Gun Woo asks, she did? She says that since she brought back something she thought she threw out, she must have had too much to drink last night. She takes a chug of water.
Gun Woo asks if she even remembers how she got home last night? With certainty, Jung Joo says that she took a cab. What?
Jung Joo thinks back to the evening. Very civilized, she and Mayor chink glasses and drink at a pojangmacha. He goes to pour her another drink and she covers her glass. She tells him they should stop drinking for the night. He smiles a ‘what a girl’ smile and pats her on the arm. Jung Joo’s voiceover says that whenever she’s out drinking, she stops when she’s had enough.
Jung Joo hails the Ajumma and tallies what they consumed. Ajumma is impressed that Jung Joo mentally figured out that it totaled 28,000 won. So she’s not too drunk that she can count. Jung Joo’s voiceover says that she called a cab and got home safely as a cab pulls up and Jung Joo climbs in.
Back to the Warm and Cozy. Jung Joo says that she worked at a company for seven years. When is he going to tell her he loves her! With her perfect homing instinct and those countless team dinners, she always crawled back home quietly and safely. And that makes me wonder who helped her home all those other times. Gun Woo repeats it: 'Perfect homing instinct'? She says that it’s like a salmon. Gun Woo asks if it was a carp he saw last night then?
He thinks back to the rest of last night. Jung Joo calls him Mayor more than once and bows to him deeply. When Ajumma comes to settle the bill, Jung Joo can’t even remember everything she consumed. Annoyed, Ajumma tells her the price. Jung Joo declares that Ajumma is correct! Jung Joo decides she needs to get a cab, so she yells for a cab. Gun Woo asks what she’s doing, since he’s got his car over there. Jung Joo walks off and Gun Woo pays the bill, giving Ajumma extra, saying he doesn’t need the change. He’s so sweet. Before he leaves, he finds the Lease Agreement ripped in half.
Gun Woo finds Jung Joo mostly asleep, sitting next to his car. He’s got her purse, too. He tries to herd her towards his car. She calls him Mayor and says that she called for a cab. He laughs and tries to get her to come. She calls him Mayor and tells him that he should go home first. Then she dozes again. Gun Woo chuckles.
He sits down a few feet from her and calls her. She answers her phone. He says that he’s the cab service and asks her to please wake up! He’s hysterical. And so sweet! She looks around (not noticing Gun Woo) and waves, asking if he can see her. He says he can. She stops waving. He tells her that she should ask the man she likes to come pick her up. Why did she call a cab service? She starts talking to the phone (and not into it). She asks how she can call him. Cab Service Gun Woo says that the man she likes would come right over if she calls him. Why doesn't she call him now? Jung Joo says that she won't. He's not even hers but she’s been so shameless. She tells Cab Ajusshi to come find her.
Back to Jung Joo chugging water. Gun Woo says that he thinks she’s the carp he found last night. She says that she’s a salmon! He replies that he’s not sure whether it was a carp or a salmon. But anyhow... he flips over the Lease Agreement and taps it, saying that he renewed their contract last night. And in light of what he told Dead Face Harpy, giving her the Warm and Cozy is giving her him. Squish.
Jung Joo says that she knows he gave money to Oma. She’s really grateful and feels sorry, but she doesn't want to be such a shameless person. They should just say that she gave Oma the deposit money. Then this contract is void. Gun Woo says that it’s not true. They drew up a new contract last night! The pinky swear kissing contract. Hehe. Squish. She doesn't remember, does she? He was right. She is a carp. Jung Joo can’t believe that she received something else from you while she was drunk? She says that she doesn't know what it was, but she won't take it.
Gun Woo says she’s refusing, even if she doesn’t know what it is? She says that she’ll never accept anything from him again. He declares that he can't take it back. He's right that once you give your heart, you really can't take it back without replacing it with something. He stamped his seal and the contract is a done deal! And what a seal that is! He points at her as he tells her that she’s in big trouble now! He is wrong! So wrong! She whines as she asks what it is.
Resort. Hae Shil wakes and Hyung isn’t in the chair. Instead, he’s sleeping in his suit on top of the covers next to her. She rolls over to gaze at him. He stirs and she pretends to be still asleep. He looks over at her and smiles. He clears his throat and rolls over to face her. He says that he kept his promise that he’d be there with her when she opens her eyes. He was going to sit back and keep watch over her, but he was spoiled as a child, so he crawled onto the bed in his sleep. Aw.
He sucks some air through his teeth and says that he has to go into work now and she should rest more. He doesn’t want to just disappear and leave her behind without exchanging any words. He tells her to count to ten and open her eyes. He gets off the bed.
Hae Shil opens her eyes and sits up. Hyung is back sitting in the chair, watching her. She laughs. He asks if she slept well. She did. He suggests they have breakfast together. Hae Shil says that she’ll go home after breakfast. He sighs and, pointing his finger at her, says that he knew she'd say that! While she was sleeping, he thought about bulldozing her house, so she’d have no reason to return... Aw. She answers that even if he bulldozes her home, she has a job to go back to. Her workplace is the sea. Can he dry up the entire ocean?
He's surprised that she’s saying that she’ll go back into the sea again. Hae Shil says that she won't run away over an accident like that. And I love that she’s not a wimp. Hyung asks what about him, who will worry about her after he sends her out to sea. She replies that a lady diver's man needs to be prepared for that. 'A lady diver's man'? Hae Shil calls him President Song Jung Geun of the resort... and asks if he wants to try dating a lady diver. She smiles slightly. He says they should try it. 'A lady diver's man.' She smiles more and he laughs, pleased. Too cute!!!
Jung Joo is upstairs. She hasn’t noticed that she’s wearing the same clothes as the night before. She looks at her phone. She called for a cab service at the street stall and talked to Gun Woo right afterward. Did she say anything over the phone? She remembers that Mayor was there. Maybe he'll know. She starts to dial and remembers suggesting they marry and telling him to try to seduce her so she completely falls for him before they finish this bottle. Please seduce her. Jung Joo covers her mouth with horror as she mutters, “Omo!” Even more horrified, she mutters, “No way!”
Mayor is sitting in his room, still in the clothes he wore the night before. But he's taken off his shoes. The medicine sits by his feet. He looks completely depressed. He mutters that he shouldn't have left her to go buy the medicine. Poor boy! Send him a woman, please! It hurts so much.
Jung Joo goes to the Town Office and asks for Mayor. MAII says that he wasn’t wasn't feeling well so he didn’t come in today. MA says that Mayor is coming down with body aches. MAII whines that mayor's family lives far away in Jeju City and mayor lives alone. Could Jung Joo go and check on him?
Jung Joo arrives with two bags of fruit. Mayor is up and around, looking normal. He’s changed his clothes and is in the process of putting on some shoes. She hurries over to him. All business, he asks what she’d doing there. And with just a shirt on… Mayor has a body. She says she heard he was sick. He says he’s much better so he's about to go into work. Did she come to check on him?
Jung Joo says that she’s there to to check on him and to apologize. She knew about his feelings, but she had too much to drink and did something terribly wrong last night. She apologizes and bows deeply. He reaches up and scratches his head, saying that whenever he’s drinking, he usually doesn't remember much the day after. He waves like it’s no big deal.
She smiles and asks if he’s really feeling better? He says that he’s feeling good enough to go into the office. He swings his arms and pats his chest to ‘prove’ it. She notices one of the buttons on his shirt is loose. He rips it off. But with it gone, his shirt gaps. He asks if she could fix it for him.
And instead of the Mayor taking the shirt off… They sit – with Mayor still wearing the shirt – while Jung Joo sews back on the button. It’s not like he didn’t have an undershirt on underneath! He’s sitting awkwardly as she sews. Just take the shirt off, dude! It’s not like you’ll be topless. He adjusts his seat and it’s obvious it’s really uncomfortable. He looks at her sadly and asks if she and Gun Woo are going to keep running Warm and Cozy together? She says no. As of yesterday, their contract was called off. Her deposit money is gone, too.
Mayor blinks. Hasn't the situation changed as of yesterday? Didn't something happen while he left to go buy medicine? Jung Joo looks at him, surprised. He even went out to buy medicine for her? She confesses that she doesn't remember anything after 'I'll marry you.' She’s sorry. She must really be a carp. Mayor scratches his head and mutters that Jung Joo must not remember that he arrived after that. She looks at him and asks if someone came by. Mayor blinks and says that he came back with the medicine. She asks if anything happened afterward.
Mayor remembers how Gun Woo said that she’s his girlfriend and is going to marry him. Mayor shakes his head and says, “No, not really.” And now I do not feel sorry for him. Dude. Jung Joo smiles and says that that’s good. She says that she’s almost done. Now smiling, Mayor says that he thought it was all over... but it isn't yet. Jung Joo says that it'll be done soon enough. And they’re talking about two different things. I am shaking my head now and just a little annoyed. Mayor, give up!
Jung Joo ties the knot and snips the thread. Mayor eagerly asks if she thinks he still has a chance? They look at each other. There’s a snapping noise. It’s the Ajummas and Jong Bae. It’s obvious by what they say and Bok Nyeo snapping tons of pics with her handphone that they think this is a date. Jong Bae hurries them out.
Jung Joo tells Mayor that they’ll really be mistaken this time. She wants to go and explain. Wrist grab from Mayor. He declares that he’s not going to explain anything to them. Because it's true that he likes her. It doesn't matter if rumors fly around about them. Is she going to explain this situation to Baek Gun Woo? Does she really want him to know that there's no one else but him in her heart? ‘I'm an idiot who loses to you and gives into your ways.’ Does she want him to know that?
She stops him by saying that she does think she’s a fool. Mayor says that she asked him to help her kick Gun Woo out of her heart. She needs to tell Gun Woo to leave since someone else will come in. Jung Joo asks if Mayor want her to lie to Gun Woo. I want to slap him now! Please let Gun Woo confess to stop this mess! Mayor says that a feint is also a type of strategic move. He will become that feint for her. Regardless of what sort of aggressive move Gun Woo makes, don't be deceived and don't let her heart waver! Even if Gun Woo confesses his feelings and says he'll love you from now on to make her heart waver, she must not be shaken. And I really want to punch him, since he knows that that’s exactly what Gun Woo’s going to do. This is beneath him to be manipulative.
Mayor asks if she’s going to let her heart waver again if she hears something like that. She answers, asking how she could trust those words. Mayor nods, telling her not to trust them. Don't let her heart waver. Just kick him out of her heart since she said she would! Mayor’s voice practically pleads.
Gun Woo is in a good mood as he enters the Warm and Cozy. Nice head wrap. He greets Poong San and announces that he harvested this whole bowl of herbs. It’s a big bowl. Jung Joo should be happy, right? Poong San asks what happened to him? Lately he’s been hanging out with Dead Face Harpy every day. Poong San sounds a little annoyed that hyung has turned back to the harpy. Gun Woo says that he hasn’t been doing that. Poong San asks when Jung Joo is leaving the Warm and Cozy. Gun Woo answers that that won't happen.
Poong San asks if Jung Joo’s not going to the restaurant the mayor introduced her to? Jung Joo seemed to be set on becoming Mrs. Mayor. Confidently, Gun Woo says that Jung Joo isn't leaving. Poong San asks why not? Gun Woo answers that he's not going to let her go. He likes Jung Joo too much to let her go. Poong San blinks several times, completely surprised that hyung is now admitting his feelings. Gun Woo smiles and adds, picking at his harvesting scythe, that if Poong San calls Jung Joo 'Mrs. Mayor' one more time in front of him, he might lose his rational senses and hit him. He plants the scythe in the bowl for emphasis. I am laughing. I love how he said that line.
Gun Woo goes outside. Jong Bae runs up, calling him “Maendorong” (Mr. Warm and Cozy). He has good news. The mayor and Miss Lee have finally started dating. Gun Woo can’t believe it. Jong Bae pulls out his phone and shows the picture of Jung Joo and Mayor looking at each other. Gun Woo can’t believe that she just went to the mayor's house? Jong Bae says she did and laughs.
Annoyed, Gun Woo pulls out his phone to yell at her. Jong Bae grabs his arm and tells him not to call her. Don't interrupt their cozy time together. Gun Woo breathes, frustrated. Jong Bae tells him not to go looking for Miss Lee today. He needs to cooperate with them! There’s that cooperate word again. Gun Woo declares that he won't cooperate with Jong Bae! Jong Bae asks why not! Gun Woo declares that he really likes Jung Joo! So he can't cooperate with that! Wow, when Gun Woo has a revelation, he doesn’t have a problem being honest. Jong Bae looks at Gun Woo, shocked. Gun Woo adds that he’s the one who messed up all the surprises set up by the townspeople! Gun Woo walks off, mad.
Jong Bae goes inside to Poong San to get the scoop. Maendorong likes Miss Lee? (Jong Bae calls them 'Maendorong' and 'Miss Lee,' the English translation.) Poong San is not sure... Gun Woo used to deny it. Jong Bae asks about Jung Joo. Does Miss Lee like Maendorong too? Poong San’s face is cracking me up. He’s not sure. She didn't completely deny it. Jong Bae says that he told all of Mayor’s family plus the core members of Sorang Town that Mayor and Jung Joo are dating. They’ll be in big trouble if Miss Lee likes Maendorong too.
Gun Woo is standing by his car, looking at his phone and stewing about the fact that Jung Joo isn’t there and isn’t answering his calls. Jung Joo arrives in Mayor’s car. He’s not happy she’s with Mayor. Before he leaves, Mayor glances over at Gun Woo and tells her that it seems it will be very windy. Please don't waver. Gun Woo looks at him like he wants to hurt him. Jung Joo says that she understands. She goes inside and Mayor and Gun Woo glare at each other.
Jong Bae is still there. Poong San greets her. He asks if it’s true that she was with the mayor? What did Gun Woo say? (Jong Bae is listening to their conversation.) Jung Joo asks if Gun Woo went some place last night. Poong San says that he saw Dead Face Harpy arriving just as he was leaving last night. Jung Joo sighs. So he was with her.
Outside, Gun Woo asks Mayor if he wasn’t with Jung Joo the night before. Did Mayor see him, by any chance? He brought her back home. Mayor acts like he doesn’t know this and says that he didn’t see Gun Woo. He didn’t? Gun Woo says that he heard Mayor was sick. He should rest at home. Why make the effort in taking Jung Joo home? Mayor says that it’s because it isn't time for him to rest. Gun Woo sarcastically says, “What a great mayor.” He gives Mayor a glare and goes inside. Mayor sighs and tells himself that he's so petty. He slaps the back of his head several times as punishment.
Gun Woo enters. He says that he told her to remember what happened last night, so why did she go see the mayor? She says it’s because she remembered. She promised to marry the mayor in her drunkenness. Gun Woo laughs in disbelief. She really is a carp. She didn't say that to the mayor. Try and remember. Defensively, she asks what he knows. Did he see something? He says that he saw everything.
Jung Joo says that after she called a taxi, she was talking to him on the phone last night. He’s saying that they were on the phone while sitting across from one other. Gun Woo says that it’s because he momentarily pretended to be a cab service. She’s not buying it. She says that Mayor said that he never saw him. He needs to stop joking around! Gun Woo sighs. So this looks like a joke to her because of the things he’s done. Yeah, it’s natural with how you’ve toyed with her in the past that she might think that.
Gun Woo declares that he'll be serious and tell her properly. He was worried about her, so he went looking for her last night. He found her and he didn't want to send her anywhere else, so they signed a new contract. He gave her everything last night. She’ll accept it, right? Love not-declaration #5. Without saying I love you. I sigh. Jung Joo can’t believe that she really asked him to give her back the Warm and Cozy while she was drunk? Gun Woo sighs, starting to get frustrated. Not the restaurant! Him! He gave her himself! “Lee Jung Joo! I like you!” Finally! It only took 6 times.
Jung Joo is gobsmacked. They stare at each other. He's waiting for her to be excited because he finally declared it. Instead, Jung Joo laughs with disbelief. Gun Woo looks down, disappointed. She fans herself and says that she nearly lost to him again just now. Breaking glass sound effect. Gun Woo looks up -- amazed that she still didn’t believe him when he was totally honest. She clears her throat and steels herself. She looks at him and asks if he thinks that she’d believe that? His face protests as she says that he must have thought she'd be grinning and fall for that again, right? She won't lose to him again. He’s been driven out of her heart – Gun Woo looks away, completely dumb-founded that it didn’t work and that she’s still thinking that he’s not sincere. Jung Joo declares that someone else is coming in now. She walks away and Gun Woo can’t believe that that just happened.
Poong San and Jong Bae have been eavesdropping. They quickly hide as Jung Joo goes upstairs. Jong Bae says that he doesn't need to worry. Maendorong liked her but he got rejected! Poong San knows that’s not true. Poong San sighs and says that he feels so bad for Gun Woo. Jong Bae tells him that he worries too much.
Upstairs, Jung Joo sits at her vanity. She sighs after making a quick escape. Even though it wasn’t an escape. You just rejected him, you idiot. If she didn't listen to the mayor – the duplicitous mayor who lied about what he saw – and fell for that, she would've lost again!
Gun Woo is stewing in the kitchen. Poong San comes in and asks Gun Woo what happened. Sullenly, he says that because of his previous behavior, Jung Joo doesn't seem to believe him. This must be how ‘The Boy Who Cried Tiger’ came to be.
In Korea, the story of ‘The Boy who Cried Wolf’ is ‘The Boy Who Cried Tiger Too Often’ and instead of his sheep being eaten by the wolf, it’s the boy who gets eaten by the tiger. Since Gun Woo is thinking of that, that’s even more intense.
Poong San reminds Gun Woo that the boy gets eaten by the tiger in the end. Gun Woo protests that it’s just because he didn't know any better... Wasn't the boy forgiven and lived a happy life? Maybe that’s the Aesop fable you’re thinking of. Poong San says that it definitely wasn't a happy ending. (And happy ending in Korean is ‘happy ending.’) He was... Poong San makes a click while doing a slicing motion at his neck (indicating that he was killed). Gun Woo immediately starts to chew on his thumb, worried.
Jong Bae walks up and tells Gun Woo that Mayor’s siblings will come by today to see Jung Joo today. Since he was rejected, give up like a man and cooperate! Gun Woo can’t say anything but ‘Ajusshi!’
And we meet Mayor’s siblings:
His oldest brother, a doctor at the clinic. Who looks exactly like Mayor, except he’s wearing glasses. He talks a little differently, too. He thinks Jung Joo looks healthy. Why does his brother look exactly like him? That’s some strong genes!
Yoo Ja brings the mayor's second brother, owner of Sorang Ranch..It’s Mayor if he had really bad hair and worked at a dude ranch. Younger brother chomps on gum. He grabs Jung Joo into a hug, slaps her on the arm and tells her to come and ride a horse with his Wook!
Jong Bae arrives with Mayor’s sister. No, please. No, please. Oh, no! She looks just like Mayor. Jung Joo looks at her like she can’t believe it. And not in a good way. Sis is a home economics teacher at Sorang Middle School. If they all live right in town, why do his parents live all the way at Jeju City? With a really high voice, Sis says that Jung Joo looks like she must've been a good student.
Jung Joo is having tea (at the Warm and Cozy) with Mayor. He passes her a picture of his father, who he says all his brothers take after. It’s Mayor as an old man. Those are some STRONG genes. Poong San marvels that Mayor looks just like his father. Mayor adds that his niece is in high school, and she looks just like him too. Poong San can’t believe that there’s a girl in high school with that face? Jung Joo’s smile gets a little smaller as that sinks in. Poong San shakes his head, amazed.
Jung Joo says that they’re all very mistaken about the dating. Mayor says that he didn't explain anything to them. What about her? Jung Joo says that she didn't say anything to Gun Woo either. She just left him to find out. She asks if Gun Woo didn't come to pick her up last night, did he? She’s still hoping that he likes her, even if her head is saying it's a lie. Mayor looks at her and without moving anything but his lips, he says that he didn't get to see it. Do you really want a girl like this? Jung Joo looks down, a little sad, and Mayor hates himself a little.
Jung Joo should go ask the pojangmacha Ajumma if Gun Woo was there. She would know. And wouldn’t lie about it.
Mayor asks Jung Joo if she wants to go buy a gift for his niece. She could think of it as him asking her out on a date. Why do you want table scraps instead of the feast? Jung Joo says that she can't just pretend to do something. Mayor looks down, sad to be rejected. But Jung Joo adds that she’ll make a real effort so that it isn't just a lie to do a feint. He looks up and says that it sounds good to him. Even that is enough for him. And I want to shake him. Even if I wasn't rooting for Gun Woo.
Jung Joo is putting things away in the storeroom. Gun Woo enters with a bottle of wine. Without looking at him, she tells him that it looks like they're out of dish soap. He should buy some. She'll only be here until next weekend. He walks over to her and asks if she really can't believe that he came to pick her up last night. And she can't believe anything he tells her? His voice sounds a little wounded. She sighs.
Jung Joo says that the contract was the last bit of her pride. It was nothing big, but she sank her entire fortune into it. But now it's gone. She has nothing now. Gun Woo sighs. She says that he keeps saying that he gave her something while she was drunk... But she doesn't remember. She has no intention of taking it either. And she’s not turning around… because she won’t be able to say this looking at him. Gun Woo says that he told her he already gave it to her. He pulls the necklace out of his pocket and looks at it. He says that he already gave it to her, so he can't take it back.
He tells her that if she doesn’t want to confirm right now, she can confirm it later. And this is a bonus. He reaches up to the shelf above her head and puts the necklace there. His last words remind her of the dream, where he said the same thing, the pinky swear with the kiss. She turns around, looking freaked out. He looks at her and asks if she’s now finally giving him the time of day? Does she remember? He's waiting for her to say yes, but she says that she doesn't remember at all. He tells her that she’s a carp and raps her on her forehead. He leaves.
Jung Joo immediately turns around and reaches for what he left her. But she stops. Whatever it is, if she sees it, she’ll waver again. Let's not give in. She looks back once before she leaves but leaves it.
Noona has stopped by Hyung’s villa. Jang meets her. Noona asks, “That lady is still here, right?” Jang is to take her home right now. She orders him to wait. She’ll make that ajumma come to her senses before she sends her off. Jang has no choice but to wait.
Noona enters and tells the ajumma to come this way. They need to talk. Noona orders ajumma to sit over there. Hae Shil tells her to hold on. I love that Hae Shil is not intimidated at all. Noona can’t believe that ajumma is not doing what she said. Didn't she hear her say that they need to talk? Hae Shil looks at Noona and says that before they do, she’s going to the bathroom. And I roll. Noona is stunned. What? Hae Shil says that she as going to go because it looks to be a long talk. Should she hold it? Will Noona make it short? Noona tells her to go ahead.
Noona sits and fans herself with the envelope she’s carrying. She prepares: Shoot the envelope! Splash the water! She tells herself that “you can do it, Cha Hee Ra!”
Hae Shil returns. Noona is sitting with her arms crossed. Hae Shil sits and waits. Noona announces that, in Hae Shil’s situation, a man like Hyung must be a dream. But people wake up from dreams. Noona’s sure that Hyung won't last too long in that state. She holds out the envelope and tells Hae Shil to take this and come to her senses. She slaps it on the table. Hae Shil replies that it's true that she’s gone crazy for Hyung, but she didn't go crazy over him for money.
Noona scoffs that that is such an obvious line! What about him has she gone crazy for? Straight faced – and I love how Hae Shil is to straight-faced when she’s sarcastic – she asks if it’s not obvious. She’s gone crazy over him because he's handsome. Noona blinks. Precious like a black pearl. She doesn't care about anything else, but she really cares about a guy's looks. I am rolling on the floor.
Hae Shil says that if Hyung doesn't last too long in that state, like Noona said, or if he loses hair and gets a fat belly, then she’s sure she’ll come to her senses on her own. Right now, even if Noona gave her a gazillion won, she can't give up on her handsome black pearl. Hae Shil stands, done with the conversation. Noona asks if Hae Shil thinks this is a joke. She picks up the glass to throw it but is stopped by Hae Shil’s hand. Noona looks a little afraid now. Hae Shil’s face is a little bit scary.
Hae Shil says that she’s a lady diver who had a near-death experience in the sea yesterday. If Noona threatens her with this drinking water, it hurts her pride. She shoves Noona backward, and Noona sits, scared of Hae Shil. Hae Shil says that once she starts dating Black Pearl, she'll also be seeing his sister often. Don't play with money or water like this. She’ll get going now.
Jang has eavesdropped on the whole thing. He reports back to Hyung. He’s happy at what he gets to report, because it means that the girl his boss likes is not going to be scared off by Noona. Hyung tells him to go and as Jang leaves, Hyung breaks out into a cheesy grin. He smacks his cheeks and holds them. This equals giddy, most often seen in girls. Heh. She likes him because he’s handsome? He is so cute! Still holding his cheeks and the cheesy grin, Hyung sits down. He spins around in his chair. 'My black pearl'? Even bigger smile.
Noona tells Mi Ra that she thinks Hyung has gone nuts. He's seeing a lady diver. Both of them have lost their minds! Mi Ra sighs and says that the pair share an incredible fate. Noona asks Mi Ra if she knows which lady diver Hyung is seeing? Mi Ra lies terribly and says no. But Noona doesn't notice. Laughing nervously, she says that it's just like something out of a novel. This reminds Noona to ask how Mi Ra’s research is going. Did she get that picture of the wife of the man that Gun Woo's father killed? Mi Ra lies again and says that they couldn't take it. They got the wrong person. So Noona shouldn't be curious about it either.
Gun Woo and Jung Joo are cleaning. Gun Woo stops and sits on the table she’s wiping down. She tells him to move. She has to clean up and go out soon. He asks if she’s going somewhere with the mayor again? She is. Gun Woo says that it can't be anything incredibly important and she’s arranged it because she wants him to notice, right? She tells him to think whatever he wants.
Gun Woo says that he can't decide on his own. He told her that he gave her everything. He’ll do whatever she tells him to do. What should he do? Should he hold onto her and cry so that she won't go? Or should he make a scene so that she won't go? Jung Joo tells him to just let her go, since he told her to do whatever she wants! He doesn’t like that answer. She wants to go, so he shouldn’t do anything.
Gun Woo stands up and pounds the broom on the floor. Indignant, he says that she wouldn't do this to him if she could remember what happened that night. She answers that it’s like he said. She’s a carp. She doesn't remember! Gun Woo huffs. He tosses the broom aside and leans in across the table. He says that she said that her true self is a vampire. She looks up at him. He says that she’s a carp who can't remember that her true nature is of a vampire. A vampire carp. He wiggles his fingers in her face and tells her to wake up! He'll be happy to be eaten alive.
Jung Joo’s weakening, so she grits her teeth. She slaps his hand and says that she’s really a carp! She throws down the cloth and asks herself why she’s doing this again. She gets her purse and goes. He yells after her, calling her a carp and asking where she’s going?
Mayor and Jung Joo enter a Prospecs store. Prospecs are athletic walking shoes. Jung Joo suggests buying his niece a trendy exercise outfit. He says that niece chewed him out last year for buying her a Korean dictionary. So, out of spite, he was going to buy her an English dictionary this time. He’s glad he came with Jung Joo. She holds up some shirts and asks if his niece looks like him. She does. Super-strong genes. Wow, Jung Joo, you really need to be attracted to him for that and you’re not.
Jung Joo tries to leave, but Mayor asks if she wouldn’t mind going with him to drop off the gift. Jung Joo waits in the car. Niece approaches and greets her. We don’t see her face, but it’s probably because Kim Sung Oh wouldn’t look convincing as a teenager. Jung Joo smiles and says that she’s the spitting image of her uncle. Wow. Not a good thing.
Gun Woo looks at his watch. He’s waiting for Jung Joo. He mutters that she forgot when she was coming home by... Did she really turn into a carp? Door jingles… but it’s Dead Face Harpy. She looks like she’s been crying. They sit and she tells him not to change. Her voice is quivering, like she’s emotional. She really came to like him now. Just like he was patient with her when she was selfish and looked at people's backgrounds, she’ll be patient about how he’s helping that woman out of pity. She corrects herself and says that even if he helps ten more people other than her, she’ll wait for him.
Gun Woo tells Dead Face Harpy that he’s watched over her for a long time, so he knows that she’s not really crying right now. Heh. She sighs, because she knows she’s busted. No longer weepy, she says that she almost cried. She wasn't completely acting. Now completely not upset, but rather more testy, she asks how he can change. Gun Woo says that since his feelings for her were one-sided, it's not that he refused to try to change for her. What he wanted was to keep wasn’t his feelings for her. It was determination to like only one person. Wow, he really has had some self-awareness.
Dead Face Harpy asks if he’s saying that he wanted to be different than his father? Knew she would play it. Harpy! Gun Woo looks at her, surprised that she’s playing that card. Dead Face Harpy says that she heard a bit about him from Noona. She heard his father acted like he'd love his mother forever but betrayed her. Gun Woo sighs like he can’t believe Noona talked so much. He doesn’t want to become someone like his father. Wow, I can’t believe that she just threw that in his face to try and keep him.
Dead Face Harpy tells him that his feelings haven't changed. He’s just temporarily mistaken. She’ll wait for him, so come back. Gun Woo’s not moved. He looks at her and says that she’s also known him for a long time. Can't she tell? Does he look like he’s mistaken right now? He truly likes Jung Joo. He tells Dead Face Harpy to stop and leave. He gives her one last… glare and leaves. Dead Face Harpy actually cries.
The pier. Driver opens the door for GWD, who is wearing sunglasses at night. He walks by Jong Bae, who recognizes him and calls him “President Jin.” GWD takes off his sunglasses and says that Jong Bae is right. He's Jin Tae Yong. They go to Jong Bae’s restaurant, where they share some coffee. Jong Bae says that it’s been nearly 30 years. He hasn’t heard from GWD at all. How did he come there? It’s like Jong Bae wanted and expected to hear from him. Not something you'd really desire or expect from a murderer or con-man.
GWD says that he didn’t mean to show up again, but he heard that Hae Shil got into an accident in the ocean. He’d like to help her. He corrects himself. It wouldn't be helping her. It would be repaying his sins, since he killed her husband. Darn, I was so hoping that he didn’t really do it. Jong Bae says that he heard that GWD served his entire 15-year sentence without parole. Does he now want to pay back the debt hidden in his heart? GWD says that he’d like to if he can. If he does it himself, she might say no. He’d like Jong Bae to help him.
Hyung and Hae Shil are walking arm in arm. They’re return from going into Seoul for a concert. She admits that she was sleepy during it. She tried hard to listen along to keep up with him, but the songs never touched her heart. He says that he liked it. She says that she’ll invite him to a concert that she enjoys next time. Hyung replies that he’ll tell her if he thinks it’s boring. She asks if he’s upset because she said it was boring. Should she have said it was good even if those were empty words? He tells her not to. He wasn’t able to make sure that she had a good time and couldn't suit her taste, so it's a pity. He tells her to go inside. Nice that it seems like they're trying to have a healthy, honest relationship, where they tell each other exactly what they think. Hyung should help his dongsaeng out.
Hae Shil complies (going in) but quickly comes back, asking if he’s hungry. Does he want to eat ramen before he goes? Hyung looks at her. She’s asking if he wants to eat ramen. Hyung says that he saw that movie (2001’s ‘One Fine Spring Day’) and they are encouraged that they like the same movie. He says that he doesn't put an egg in his ramen. She says that she adds octopus to hers. Is that okay? She walks back into her house. Smiling, like his woman is really cool, Hyung follows.
Gun Woo is sitting waiting for Jung Joo. She arrives with a bunch of bags. When he asks, she says that she went to the mayor's big brother's house and they packed them for her. Gun Woo can’t believe that she even went to visit the mayor's big brother's house! She laughs and says that it was his niece's birthday, so the whole family got together. It's really a big family. And they all look alike. She adds that people looking alike were all talking at the same time. It was chaotic, but it was fun.
Frowning, Gun Woo says that she must have had dinner. He was waiting for her and hasn't had dinner. He even made something for her. Does she want it? He sounds hopeful, because normally, she finds his food irresistible. She doesn’t. She brought millet rice cakes that the mayor's mother made. Gun Woo’s bothered because Jung Joo called her omeonim. She opens it and asks if he wants some. He smacks at it, telling her to forget it. Unfortunately, he knocks it out of her hands. She yells that he’s really mean and you can tell by his face that it wasn’t intentionally done. Gun Woo groan/sighs and rubs the back of his neck.
Jung Joo is still mad as she sits on her bed. Gun Woo pokes his head through her curtains and asks if she’s upset? She doesn’t answer. He comes in and sits by her on the bed. Gently, he asks if he should give her something delicious so that she won't be upset anymore? She turns to glare at him and declares that she doesn’t have an appetite. She won't fall for him even if he tries to seduce her! He tells her that she really is a carp. She said the same thing once before but she still ate the whole dish of dukbokki that he made. At least he made that connection finally with that conversation.
Jung Joo answers that he’s right. She’s a carp. He tells her that she’s not just an ordinary carp. She’s a vampire carp! This gets her to go downstairs. He sets a plate full of carp-shaped buns in front of her. She’s sitting with her arms crossed. When she asks, he picks up one and makes it swim, saying that it’s a vampire carp. It looks like a carp on the outside, but its true nature is – he rips it open to reveal the sweet red filling – and dramatically says it’s a vampire! Then he shoves the bun in his mouth. He smiles and says that it's really sweet.
He holds one out to her and tells her to try some too. He made them while he was thinking of her. And they’re sweet. Aw. She huffs and refuses. He puts the carp down and apologizes. He ruined the food someone else's mother took time to make. What about the 5 second rule? He explains that when she calls someone else's parents 'Omeonim, Abeonim', and says that she’s happy, he feels really intimidated. He has no competitive edge in that regard. And Jung Joo looks like she feels bad for him. Again, Gun Woo with insight into himself.
Jung Joo asks if she has any family. She feels bad even bringing up her Oma... Gun Woo say that’s why she's torn. She wants them as parents because she doesn't have any. But he can't give that to her. Jung Joo points out that he has his brother and his sister. Like he’s trying to assure her that he’s still in the running for her heart. Gun Woo replies that Hyung grew up with his father's family and Noona grew up with her father's family. He was with Mom... But she didn't stay with him all that much. Wow, so from a young age, Gun Woo’s been alone. So he went to Hyung’s and Noona’s once in a while. But their families didn't like him that much. No one really liked his mom. His last name is Baek. Not even his Mom’s own family embraced him. Man, poor Gun Woo.
Jung Joo says that now that she's met her mom, even though something awful happened, she’s glad she met her. Wouldn’t he be happy if he got to meet his father? Gun Woo starts to say something about his father but stops. He smiles and tells her to forget it. He just doesn't ever want to meet him.
GWD has finished his visit with Jong Bae. He says that he wants to pay for his sins to Ms. Kim Hae Shil, so please be careful that his identity isn't revealed. Jong Bae says that he understands. Before GWD goes, Jong Bae asks him about the woman he was with at the time of the accident. He said that she with was pregnant with his child, right? Did she even wait for him? Meaningful music. GWD avoids the answer and tells Jong Bae to please just take care of what he asked Jong Bae to do.
Hae Shil and Hyung are sitting together. She says that her husband had a really unjustified, sudden death. Ten years of being too sad, ten years of being upset, ten years of being dumbfounded. She lived 30 years as if it were the day after he left this world. She thought it was her fate to live the same day for the rest of her life. But ever since she met Hyung, that day has changed. Hyung says that she’ll never have a reason to go back to that day. He’ll clean up everything around her that reminds her of that day. Ee. He’s going to have to ‘clean up’ his brother. Not good. Hae Shil smiles and says that she’ll clean everything up and never go back to that day. Hyung puts his arm around her and she leans on his shoulder.
Jung Joo is putting things away in the fridge. Gun Woo comes in and sits on the island. He tells her that next time, she shouldn’t ever go somewhere like that! He says that she’s nice. Don't be mean like him. She should let the mayor go so that he can get over her. And this is true, because she does still like Gun Woo. She’s deluding herself that she’s going to get over him. The one she likes is him, after all.
She makes a face, shuts the fridge and says that he’s right. She can't act mean. That’s why she’s really making an effort to make things work out with Mayor. He tells her that she can't! She looks at him, surprised. She said that she would, so how does he know?
Gun Woo pulls her over to him. He says that after you spend time in the kitchen, you can tell the temperature of the oven or a pot on the stove top. If the oven is hot enough or when the water on the stove top will start boiling, you just come to know. He reaches up and puts the back his index and middle fingers to her forehead. She looks at him, worried. Because she’s wavering. After a moment, he tells her that she’s still boiling hot. He can tell she hasn’t gotten cold.
Gun Woo tells her that he’s not in that 'warm and cozy' state like when he was just being nice to her. He takes her hand and puts it over his heart. He says that he’s really hot right now. Swooning just a little. He holds her hand there and looks at her. She swallows and looks away and says that maybe it’s because he kept pouring cold water on her the whole time, but she can't believe him.
She tries to pull her hand away, but he grabs both of her wrists and pulls her closer. She gasps with surprise – and a little bit of fear, because she’s going to waver. He looks at her and then says that it's really tough to explain the story behind 'The Boy Who Cried Tiger.' He might get eaten by the tiger! He pats her on the cheek and tells her to go easy on him. He leaves the kitchen. Jung Joo sighs and looks at her hand.
Hae Shil is working. Jong Bae enters and tells her that someone wants to buy her house. He gave the guy a really high price, but he still wants to buy it. She's surprised. Jong Bae says that he really needs that lot to build something. He'll probably pay more than 10 times the price if Jong Bae asks for it. Hae Shil is surprised. Jong Bae asks if she’s interested in selling, since she’s lived in that house ever since her husband died. She says that she was thinking about selling it and moving recently. She wants to forget everything that happened there and move on... Jong Bae says that he’ll proceed then. Hae Shil asks who the buyer is. We don’t hear his answer.
Instead, we switch to Hyung on the phone. He tells Hae Shil that no matter how much he likes her, he wouldn't buy that house from her at 10 times its value. Hae Shil’s surprised. She thought it was him. Hyung smiles and says that she must think that he really likes her a lot. She tells him that it’s true. He followed her around because she liked him. He answers that she said, 'I like my black pearl because he's handsome.' She tells him to forget it. Before she can hang up, Hyung tells her to hold on. He wants to introduce her to his family.
Hyung goes by the Warm and Cozy. He says that Gun Woo doesn't have a good reputation in this town. Gun Woo chuckles and says that that’s why Hyung is there, because he’s worried about Gun Woo’s reputation? Hyung says that he has someone he want to introduce to Gun Woo. She's the chairwoman of the Sorang Lady Diver's Association. Gun Woo wants to know why Hyung wants to introduce that scary lady diver to him. Proudly, Hyung says that he’s that lady diver's man.
Jong Bae has called Mi Ra and Dong Soo. They’re happy to see him. Did he call them to give more information? Jong Bae says that he was curious about something. That picture they gave him last time. Her last name is Baek, right? Mi Ra and Dong Soo look at each other. Jong Bae says that he remembers that she lived with an actor. Dong Soo asks what Jong Bae’s curious about. Jong Bae asks if she had a child. He would’ve been born the year after the accident. It’s President Jin Tae Yong's child, isn't it? Mi Ra scratches her head, avoiding his gaze. Jong Bae tells her to let him meet the boy.
They do, because the next thing we see, Jong Bae is talking to Gun Woo in the storeroom. Gun Woo says he did hear about his father. Also that he killed someone and went to prison for it. His mother told him. Jong Bae asks if Gun Woo knows who it is that his father killed? Gun Woo looks at him. Jong Bae sighs and says that Gun Woo doesn't know and Hyung doesn't know... He’s sure that Hae Shil didn't know either. Gun Woo asks what this has to do with Hyung. Jong Bae says that the person his father killed... was Hae Shil's husband.
Gun Woo is shaken. His father killed the husband of the lady diver that Hyung wants to introduce him? Jong Bae sighs and wonders how he can tell Hae Shil. His eyes starting to water, he says not to tell her. His father and Hyung aren't at all related to this. Jong Bae asks how they’re they not related? He's Hyung’s brother! Gun Woo says that he can leave. Jong Bae tells him that President Jin showed up. Recently. So how can it not be an issue? Gun Woo sighs and looks like he doesn’t know what he’s going to do.
End of class at Sorang Lady Diver School. Ajummas grab Jung Joo and ask about her going to Mayor’s house. Some of the other students like Mayor. After all, Mayor said he'd treat them to makgeolli with their catch at the field practice… all because of Lee Jung Joo. Bok Nyeo declares that it’s a match by the sea god. Those couples have a happy life. Jung Joo tries to look happy about that. Mayor arrives. Everyone clears out quickly. He congratulates her on catching an octopus. He’ll treat her to makgeolli today. She agrees. He exits. She feels her forehead and sighs. It's not hot. Nope, because you like Gun Woo.
Hyung is having the introductory lunch. Noona and Hae Shil are already there. He tells Noona that Hae Shil is very important to him, so mind her manners from now on. Looking at Hae Shil, Noona says that she’s so scared, she has no choice. Heh. Hae Shil says that Hyung is like a black pearl and Noona is pale and pretty like a white pearl. Noona, more relaxed, says that she was born pale.
Hyung stops Hae Shil from drinking cold water. She’ll catch cold. Noona asks why he's making a big deal? And that’s an old wives tale. I’ve drunk plenty of cold water and not caught a cold. They snipe a little about him being overly protective. Hae Shil smiles. They start to eat.
The camera pans to reveal Gun Woo sitting a few tables over, listening to everything. He looks burdened. Poor Gun Woo. As he listens to his siblings bicker, he smiles with affection. In the distance, Dead Face Harpy sees him through a window and that he’s not sitting with his siblings. She wonders what’s going on. Gun Woo really looks burdened. Hyung’s table is enjoying themselves. Hyung notes that Gun Woo is late. Noona has noticed. Gun Woo looks down, starting to tear up. He gets up and leaves.
Gun Woo meets with Jong Bae. He says that he will leave Jeju Island soon. He’ll never come between Hyung and that lady. Jong Bae wonders how that’s possible when it's his brother. Gun Woo answers that before he opened the restaurant on Jeju Island, he lived his life wandering around. He can live like the old days again. He’s making me cry again because he and I both know that's a lie. Jong Bae asks if Gun Woo’s just going to leave behind the Warm and Cozy? And Jung Joo. He says that that’s exactly what he’s going to do. So please tell his father never to show up there. Gun Woo’s father appears close by, close enough to hear Gun Woo’s words. He looks hurt by them.
Jong Bae says that GWD didn't come ihere to cause trouble. He wants to repay for his sin toward Hae Shil. Gun Woo says to tell him not to do things like that. Tell GWD not to come close to the people who are precious to him. Tell GWD that he’ll cut it off for him so that it won't be connected to him. GWD – in his nice shiny suit – walks away.
Gun Woo arrives back at the Warm and Cozy. He stops walking -- like he can’t walk any farther. He sits on a stool. He looks really sad. Poong San arrives and happily asks Gun Woo how the meeting was. Did he have a good talk with his future sister-in-law? Gun Woo lies and says he did. Poong San says that Jung Joo just left for a gathering with the Sorang Lady Diver School. He’s planning on going later. Does Gun Woo you want to go? Tears coming, Gun Woo tells him to go ahead. Gun Woo’s back is to Poong San, so Poong San doesn’t see.
Poong San whines that they should go. To him, this is another get-together that the mayor called for so that he can show off for Jung Joo. He says that Gun Woo should go there and protect Jung Joo. Jung Joo could really become Mrs. Mayor… He stops, remembering Gun Woo’s warning. He changes his sentence: They'll treat her like the mayor's girl... Gun Woo doesn’t react. Poong San says that he can't stop them by himself. Everyone likes Jung Joo so much. Poong San tells him that they’re going together. Gun Woo doesn’t move. Poong San leaves and Gun Woo looks down, his eyes wet. He’s really going to make me cry.
The divers’ party. Jung Joo is sitting next to Mayor. Gun Woo arrives across the way. He watches Jung Joo with them. His face is killing me. He looks so dead inside. He remembers, from when she thought he was asleep, Jung Joo telling him that she came to like him too much… her falling off the chairs, catching her and feeling uncomfortable... blowing the powdered sugar off her face and being moved… kissing her (at the end of Ep. 10)... how he kept denying his feelings… beings at the beach with the lighthouse, embracing her, and telling her that he’s hers… until she dies. He is totally depressing me.
Gun Woo quietly tells Jung Joo that he thinks he has to run away from there soon. In the distance, Jung Joo smiles like she’s not uncomfortable. He asks if she wants to come with him? And his face rips my guts out. Another shot of Jung Joo trying to look like she’s enjoying herself. Gun Woo’s tears start to well up. And the Episode Ends.
[Recipe 12: Millet Rice Cakes]
This recipe is done by Hwang Wook, the town mayor who loves Jeju, with the help of his big brother. Big brother approaches the kitchen holding his hands like he’s walking into surgery.
- First, boil red beans.
- Cook the red beans until they are soft.
- Add sugar and honey to one-third of it and mash it to make the filling.
- Add sugar to two-thirds of it to make crumbs.
- Mix ground millet, sweet rice flour, blanched mugwort.
- Knead the dough while you add boiling water.
- Cook the rice cakes in boiling water and roll in red bean crumbs that are slightly cooled off with cold water.
- Plate them on a dish and you're done!
Thoughts
My stomach hurts. Wow. If ever I felt bad Gun Woo it’s right now. That idea that I had, that this is what happens after ‘The Great Gatsby,’ I think I’m dead on. This is what happened after. And it makes me so sad for Gun Woo. He told her he loves her and she doesn’t believe him. And now he’s about to leave so that everyone he loves can be happy. That’s terrible!
Yoo Yeon Suk is such a good actor. I knew it when I watched him in ‘Gu Family Book,’ but it’s really obvious now. He inhabits and becomes the people that he’s portraying. He doesn’t project his emotions, he feels them, which is why his reactions are so nuanced. And he has me crying by the end of this episode.
What an episode. Jung Joo’s being a carp. Gun Woo confesses more than once and she doesn’t believe him. He keeps trying to get her to remember but she can’t and won't ty. He tries to be open and tell her when he’s bothered and the like, and she doesn’t think he’s being sincere.
The stuff that Gun Woo said this episode. It really made my heart hurt for him. From a young age, he has had no one. Mom left him alone for long periods. He’d go stay with Hyung or Noona’s families – and not his mom’s – and they didn’t want him there. This poor kid. No wonder he’s such an idiot when it comes to intimacy.
Now his father has come back into the picture, so he’s going to have to abandon everyone who has ever loved him so that they can be okay. That just makes me want to cry. And it shows his heart. This isn’t the noble idiot, who’s abandoning his love because being in the relationship makes her unhappy. This is Gun Woo, leaving his family so that they won’t be made unhappy but just the truth of who his father is, because he knows that the bombshell is going to rock Hae Shil and Hyung. And Jung Joo isn’t going to listen to him, so he’s going to have to leave her, too. To go back to a life of just drifting. Man, who wants that? I know Gun Woo doesn’t. But he doesn’t see any other choice.
And I wonder what GWD’s story is. He really seems like he wants a relationship with his son, but can’t because of what Gun Woo thinks of him. GWD is being the noble idiot. With Gun Woo and with Hae Shil. I really hope all this comes out and gets cleared up quickly, because this just hurts.
Jung Joo’s being stubborn, but it’s nagging at her. Because she really does love Gun Woo. And now he’s giving clear obvious signals – accompanied with words confirming things – that he loves her too. But she’s not going to budge. Partially because the Mayor is egging her on – for his own selfish reasons. I’m sure that he rationalizes that Gun Woo makes her unhappy. Hopefully, Mayor will be the one to find out what Gun Woo did – leaving for them all – and confesses what he did. Or Jung Joo finally sees the necklace and realizes what it meant. Something. Please?
