Seok Hoon asks – like the answer is obvious – if there’s a problem with spouses sleeping together. His inflection and expression is killing me. Heh. Ji Sook can only sputters as she reacts to this. At least she doesn’t want to sleep with a man unless she loves him. Another reason why I like her. And what kind of woman was Eun Ha that she didn’t have a problem with it? Seok Hoon says that in a year, Min Woo will become the successor to the SJ Group. She has to prevent that from happening. And how is he planning that?
He reminds her of reality: A father who attempted suicide because of money. A daughter who chose death because of her father. He almost seems like he’s enjoying this. The world where one sings and one screams. They are living in hell right now. Together they’ll make a heaven, Seo Eun Ha. What is his reason for doing this? Why is he thinking that he’s in hell right now? Why does he hate Min Woo so much?
Great title! Because Seok Hoon is the devil, trying to create his own heaven.
It’s snowing! Min Woo and his bride arrive at their house. They exit their car and Min Woo has to pause to wait for Ji Sook to hurry around the car to join him. He looks a bit annoyed. Ji Sook can’t believe how beautiful the house is. So many servants. More than one private chef. Her mouth keeps hanging open. She answers the servants bows with her own. Min Woo notices – and thinks that it’s odd but doesn't say anything. And it is odd, because Eun Ha's been to the house before. Dad and Stepmom come down the staircase to greet them. Seok Hoon and Mi Yeon come after. Mi Yeon looks *so* happy to see Eun Ha. Min Woo and Ji Sook bow to the parents.
Min Woo heads for the shower. Ji Sook sits on the couch in their bedroom and listens to the shower run. She looks up at their wedding portrait and exhales. She grabs one of the remotes to turn on the TV and opens the blinds instead. I want some! She tries another remote and it turns off all the lights. Min Woo yells at her and tells her to turn them back on! She hurries to turn them back on. Min Woo exits the shower, perturbed. He walks toward her and she steps backward, sitting onto the bed. He leans over the bedside table to grab something and she throws herself backward onto the bed, alarmed. He glares at her.
He tells her to get up. Please. And he's polite, even when he's angry. She doesn’t move. He repeats himself, more forcefully. She complies. He picks up the phone and orders new sheets. And I roll. She touched the comforter and he orders new sheets. Heh! He starts to say something but stops when he notices her neck. It reminds him of what he's 'done.' He sighs and tells her to wash up first. She looks at him, worried. Why? Why does she suddenly need to wash up? Min Woo frowns and asks if she needs a reason to wash up. He repeats his order for her to hurry and wash up. She tells him – fearful but defiant – that she doesn't want to! She’ll only wash up when she wants to.
Min Woo purses his lips like he’s trying to control his temper. He nods and exhales loudly. His crazy eyes are starting. He tells her, “Fine. Then let's do it like this… for now, just wash your face.” She doesn’t know how to respond to that. He steps forward and she leans back. He leans over her and tells her to hurry up!
There’s a knock on the door. It’s Yun Soo and Chul with new bedding. They clear their throats awkwardly. Like they caught Min Woo and Ji Sook in the middle of some foreplay. I shake my head. Ji Sook announces that she’ll wash up and come back. Chul and Yun Soo start to change the bedding and can’t help but smile. Min Woo tells them that it’s not like that. Heh. They pretend they don’t know what he’s talking about.
Ji Sook is hiding in the bathroom. The shower is running but she’s not in it. She remembers what Seok Hoon told her: Get his body first. Then she can have his heart too. All of Choi Min Woo. She thinks of what Min Woo said at the wedding about him killing her. She sighs sadly.
She exits the bathroom in a pink robe with her hair up in a towel. He tells her to sit on the couch. She complies. He tells her that it’s going to be her bed, since he can't sleep there. She looks at the couch as he announces that he has three rules for the room. First, don’t touch his things. Second, don't be loud. And, third, never go into that room. He points to a room at the top of the spiral staircase. If she obeys them, they won't have any problems living together.
He mentions how she said that she has someone she loves, right? He tells her to keep seeing the guy. Min Woo won't care, but she can’t ever be caught. They'll be a happy couple in other people’s eyes and not an arranged marriage. They got married because they love each other; so, there is no problem sharing a room. Understood? Ji Sook can’t believe he just said all that stuff. He asks why she isn’t answering.
Ji Sook stands, dropping her purse to the floor. Seeing it makes him think of how he tried to strangle her with her other purse. He winces with pain at the thought of it. Ji Sook says that they don't have to go... to this extreme... He picks up the purse and angrily throws it. Ji Sook screams and reaches to protect her head. He exhales to calm himself and says that the marriage is like a business deal. She shouldn’t pretend this is beneficial to both of them. She looks at him, shocked. He tells her not to pretend she’s concerned, either. They should take what they can from each other and not irritate each other. Looking drained, he says that if he does kill her, it will be all because of her. Does she understand? Ji Sook looks at him, understandably frightened. And he looks very sad.
Outside shot of the house. That’s a huge house! Is that really a house? It’s huge! Breakfast. Dad at the head of the table. Min Woo and Ji Sook to his right, Stepmom, Mi Yeon and Seok Hoon to his left. Stepmom asks how Eun Ha is feeling. Is it still difficult because of that incident? She answers yes, which gets looks from Seok Hoon and Mi Yeon. Min Woo doesn’t look and keeps eating his food. She quickly corrects herself and says that she feels much better.
Stepmom asks how Min Woo slept. He can't sleep with someone next him. Like she cares. He replies that that was when he was younger. He’s now an adult. He slept very comfortably. Seok Hoon smiles to himself because he knows that’s not true. Min Woo stuffs a big piece of food in his mouth and looks at Ji Sook. She nods and says she slept well, too. Stepmom is surprised. Dad growls his approval. He asks Min Woo how the shopping mall construction going and orders him to keep the mayor happy until the contract is signed. Dad clears his throat and says that if Min Woo finishes this project well, he’ll send Min Woo to the head office. Reaction shots from Mi Yeon and Seok Hoon. Seok Hoon isn’t happy. Dad says that Min Woo can't keep selling merchandise in the department store. Seok Hoon boils.
Dad orders Eun Ha to start working at the gallery. Ji Sook is surprised. Mi Yeon complains that the gallery is for Stepmom and her. Dad answers that that’s why he’s telling Eun Ha to work there. Meeting more people will help for a faster recovery. They didn't even go on a honeymoon. Staying home will only make Eun Ha feel worse. Stepmom glares at Ji Sook. Dad orders Stepmom and Mi Yeon to be sure to help Eun Ha. Stepmom immediately toes the line. She says that it’s an excellent idea since Eun Ha studied art abroad. When she sees some paintings, maybe it can help Eun Ha to recover her memory. Should they do a welcome party at the gallery? Ji Sook smiles.
Outside, Seok Hoon tells Ji Sook that Dad has no intention of putting her within the company yet. He’s having his family members to spy on her, so she should do as she is told for now. Cooperate and learn confidential information bit by bit. She asks what he’s planning on doing about the debt? Seok Hoon’s surprised: What debt? She asks why he thinks she came this far? What is he going to do about her family's debt? Stoic, he tells her not to worry. He’ll pay it. She wants specifics. Testily, he says that he’ll do it slowly and without any trace. He adds for her not to make him say it twice. He doesn’t know what he’ll do if she makes him mad. Great, now she has two men threatening her with violence. And just to clarify, Seok Hoon, no one can make you angry. You choose to get angry.
Regaining his composure, he tells her to just think about Seo Eun Ha and focus on Seo Eun Ah only. She asks him who Eun Ha loved? He’s visibly bothered by the question. She asks why he didn't tell her earlier. If there was such a person, he should have told her earlier. Seok Hoon looks to be about to say something but Min Woo and Chang Soo walk up. Min Woo says that he looked all over for her, not knowing she was already outside. With a smile, she says that they were talking about the gallery where she’ll be going soon. Seok Hoon was telling her good things. Min Woo tells her to get dressed. Isn’t she already wearing clothes? They have to go somewhere. When she asks where, he replies that if she made a deal then she should get a receipt.
Their destination is to go register the marriage. With a photographer, of course. And she looks very nice. She did change her clothes. Min Woo signs first. She awkwardly goes to sign the license and starts to write her real name. She catches herself and scratches it out, writing Seo Eun Ha instead. Min Woo notices the scratching but doesn’t say anything.
Papa is filling out Ji Sook’s Notice of Death and crying as he does. Aw, poor dad. He can barely write for his tears. His weeping gets everyone’s attention. He must feel so guilty, because Ji Sook is dead because of him. Back at home, they look over Ji Sook’s last effects. Myung Hwa is there with them. Papa says they should just think that Ji Sook went to a better place. Mom wearily rises and starts to walk outside. Papa asks where she’s going and Mom says that she’s going to suffocate staying inside. Papaa wants to go together, but Mom doesn’t want him to. She just wants to be alone.
Myung Hwa asks where Ji Hyuk Oppa went. Papa says that Ji Hyuk went out because he found a nice job. Why don’t I believe that one? Ji Hyuk is outside someone’s apartment. When the person answers, Ji Hyuk chickens out from getting the money he’s there for, but the guy roughs him up anyway. Right after the guy goes back into the apartment, Ji Hyuk calls the police and says that he was assaulted. He’s got a bloody lip to prove it. He gets up and starts kicking the door, demanding the money he’s there to collect.
Next we see him with Loan Shark. That’s who he was collecting money for. Loan Shark compliments him on his skills. He’s got more bruises. Ji Hyuk reminds Loan Shark that 15% of it is his. Loan Shark says that he’ll deduct it from their debt. He writes it in his ledger and tells Ji Hyuk that at this rate, he’ll be able to pay of the debt in 3 years. Wow, 3 years of getting the crap beaten out of you. Not something to look forward to. But I think he’s working for Loan Shark to get the goods on him, clear his sister’s name and get Loan Shark put away for good. After all, the guy murdered his sister. Ji Hyuk answers that he’ll pay all of it within a year.
Leaving Loan Shark’s place, Ji Hyuk literally runs into Minion. He momentarily considers the guy and then leaves. Minion has gone to see Loan Shark. He’s there to buy land. Loan Shark says that the price has just gone up. It’s probably the land that Min Woo needs for the shopping mall. From the conversation from the morning. Minion asks Loan Shark what he’s going to do now. Loan Shark drinks his coffee and considers his answer.
Ji Sook has gone to the gallery. And it’s not a small gallery either but a huge one. Mi Yeon pleasantly tells Ji Sook to tell her the truth. Ji Sook asks what about. Mi Yeon replies about what the truth is and what is a lie. Up until when is she pretending that she’s lost her memory? Ji Sook’s face says that she doesn’t know what Mi Yeon means. Mi Yeon asks about the guy Ji Sook lived with. Ji Sook sputters over that one. Mi Yeon says that when Eun Ha went overseas, she lived together with a French man. The rumors spread quite far. Ji Sook looks a little sick at that. Did she end things cleanly with the man?
Mi Yeon adds that she heard that Eun Ha was seeing someone before her marriage. She smiles – almost evilly – and says that Eun Ha doesn't remember, right? Ji Sook replies that Mi Yeon is correct. Mi Yeon stops smiling and asks if she should make Eun Ha remember. They get interrupted by Stepmom and an older woman. Woman says that Eun Ha looks exactly the same as when she was a child. Does Eun Ha remember her? When Eun Ha was young, they held hands and walked on the Champs-Élysées often. Woman also asks after the Assemblyman’s health. Ji Sook says that EHDad is well.
Stepmom says that the Madam will be going shopping. Eun Ha and Mi Yeon should take her to the department store. Ji Sook hesitates. Stepmom asks what’s wrong. Ji Sook says that she’s not feeling very up to par right now. Stepmom smiles and says that she should move according to Dad's wishes even more. The Madam is an important person so Eun Ha shouldn’t make any mistakes and escort her. Ji Sook has to agree.
She calls Seok Hoon and tells him. He is not happy. What is she thinking?! She worked at that department store! She hangs up on his ranting. I love that she will hang up on him. He quickly heads downstairs to run interference.
Min Woo is out inspecting things. Because people who run malls have nothing better to do. ‘Master’s Sun’ taught us that. Just walk around inspecting things and looking at things through a golden telescope. He’s at Ji Sook’s old department. Obnoxious Supervisor pleasantly asks if there’s something that doesn't satisfy him? He sighs and asks what he should say. It gives off a feeling of messiness. He wonders why? Supervisor nervously laughs and wonders, too. I love that he doesn’t even know how this woman tormented Ji Sook and he’s picking on her.
Mal Ja says that it might because Supervisor hasn’t sorted out her heart yet. Supervisor slaps Mal Ja in the arm to shut up. Min Woo wants to know what Mal Ja means. Supervisor says that it’s nothing at all. Myung Hwa can’t believe she called it “nothing.” Supervisor has to admit that something really bad happened to one of their employees. Mal Ja stifles herself as she starts to cry. Supervisor smiles pleasantly and tells Min Woo that he doesn’t have to worry about it.
Min Woo declares that their VIP customers love the color pink, so change the front to pink and display it in different shades. And pink in Korean is ‘pink.’ Min Woo walks away.
Seok Hoon is stressing as he drives to the store.
Mal Ja and Myung Hwa are hard at work, swapping out the clothes. Myung Hwa says that she really doesn't like rich people. If they just shop during normal hours, do they get infected with something? Why are they always shopping outside of normal hours? Doesn't Mal Ja agree? Mal Ja replies that she hates the ‘me’ that's poor. When she thinks about Ji Sook, living seems so depressing. She starts to cry again as she says that even if you worked to death to make money, it's all over when you die. Supervisor glares at Mal Ja with disapproval. Mal Ja moans and asks why she must be working there at such a tender age to make money?
Finally they are done. Supervisor is pleased. She says that no matter how much of an expert Min Woo is, he can't say anything wrong about it. Min Woo returns and asks if they’re all done. Supervisor says that they arranged everything according to his orders. He sighs and says that the arrangement from before was better. He tells them to put it all back. Chang Soo tells him that the VIP has arrived. They leave and Supervisor makes a face.
The VIP is Madam, Mi Yeon and Ji Sook. Even though it’s night, Ji Sook is wearing sunglasses and a big hat. When they enter, the gathered staff bows. But when they straighten back up, Supervisor, Myung Hwa and Mal Ja react to Ji Sook. This makes her not want to move. Min Woo notices. Madam asks what’s wrong. Ji Sook looks over her sunglasses at her friends and tries to hide her face. She wonders if she’s going to hell at this rate.
She remembers Seok Hoon’s comment about not worrying about something she doesn’t believe in. He tells her a story about when he was a prosecutor – Heh. Vampire Prosecutor – he was interrogating a 50 year old man convicted of a hit-and-run. The man proclaimed his innocence. But he was sweating, shaking and his eyes were flicking back and forth like crazy. Ji Sook asks if Seok Hoon thought the man was guilty. He says he didn’t. The ‘victim’ was trash and had been convicted of fraud 16 times. This kind of thought occurred to him at that time: Are lies always such bad things? If you take off your mask, the world will turn its back on you. He tells Ji Sook to wear a mask! Then, the world will be on your side. Back in the present, she puts her 'mask' on.
Ji Sook glances in Myung Hwa and Mal Ja’s direction and they snap back into place. She walks with Madam past them to join Min Woo and they leave the entrance. Seok Hoon arrives at the department store. He hurries upstairs to find Ji Sook in her old department. Supervisor hasn’t noticed the resemblance, but when Madam makes Ji Sook take off her glasses, Mal Ja leans over to Myung Hwa and tells her that she said there was someone who looked exactly like Ji Sook.
As he watches her, Seok Hoon notices the necklace she’s wearing… the necklace he gave Eun Ha. He remembers putting it around Eun Ha's neck and her smiling at him with adoration. Troubled look on Seok Hoon’s face. Ji Sook catches him looking and he plays it off.
Ji Sook and Min Woo ride home together. He asks if she’s always had that kind of personality? She doesn’t know what he means. He clarifies: Is she always this kind and friendly to elders? She asks if he’s trying to thank her. He smiles and says there’s no way. She said that “if you wear a mask, you can't be happy." She was wrong. He can at least act like he's happy if he wears a mask. Like her. He says that he feels relieved. Because he’s found a great business partner. Ji Sook doesn’t know what to think. Eun Ha would have, though, because she knows what he means.
When they get home, Dad is pleased. He’s on the phone with Madam’s husband, who reports that Madam enjoyed her time. When he hangs up the phone, Dad declares that he thought Eun Ha was a bit shy, but she has a talent for making people feel good, too. Why does Dad come off like a creepy old man? He tells Min Woo he wants to talk.
Ji Sook is going to return to their room, but Stepmom asks what she bought. Ji Sook says that she bought it with the Madam. Stepmom smiles and corrects her. Isn’t “took” a better word, since she didn’t pay for them? Stepmom adds that they’re family now so there's no need for mine or yours. Looking down at her nails, Mi Yeon asks if someone having an arranged marriage with a contract count as a family member. She looks at Ji Sook and says that she feels anxious every time she sees Eun Ha. Eun Ha married for the Assemblyman's election, but what if it doesn't work out? He can't campaign if there's a scandal. When that happens, what do they do about her, so pitiful? Motioning her head at the bags, she tells Eun Ha to take as much as she can while she still can; you never know what can happen. And Ji Sook’s face looks like mine, wondering what kind of family she married into.
Dad is in his study with Min Woo and is happy. He says that Eun Ha is a ferocious tiger like her father. It’s obvious she’s a politician's daughter, since she knows how to make people happy. Min Woo posits that she could have been being genuine, happy to have seen the Madam after such a long time. It could've been to help him. Aw, is he trying to believe what Ji Sook told him at the wedding? Dad gets a belly laugh at that. Dad makes my skin crawl. He tells Min Woo to think about whether her actions are for business or not, if he wants to continue doing business.
Min Woo returns to the bedroom. Ji Sook is sitting on the bed, sadly looking at all the bags. He’s going to need fresh bedding again. Heh. He asks what she’s doing. What is she doing on his bed? She gets up and moves to the couch, obviously upset. She asks why he’s looking at her with those eyes? He realizes he’s doing it and stops himself. He gets his back-to-business face/mask and says that investment agreements will be made during lunch tomorrow with the city council. One percent of the group's stock will be offered to her. She should think of it like it’s a commission. He adds that if she feels it's a burden to accept, or if she helped him without that kind of intention, she doesn't have to accept it.
She tells him that she’ll take it. He looks at her. And I think he’s wishing she hadn’t said that. She says that he knows very well the reason why they got married. He tells her to go ahead. Their relationship was, by nature, like this anyway. He tells her to put her things away while he’s in the shower. Ji Sook sighs and looks at Ji Hyuk’s SMS feed. She smiles as she looks at it. He posts that today is Mom’s birthday. Ji Sook can’t believe that she forget. She hurries out with a package. Seok Hoon sees her leave and frowns. Mi Yeon watches him as he watches her.
Ji Sook heads over to her family’s home. She thinks of the present and how Mom would appreciate it. Seok Hoon arrives and grabs her wrist. She yelps and drops the present. He asks her if she knows what is the most immature emotion in the world is: love. Neither reason nor logic are effective against it. Wow, Seok Hoon is one messed up person if he thinks that love is an immature emotion. That useless emotion can ruin everything! Ji Sook is understandable frightened by the intensity with which he is speaking. He asks if she loves her family. Does she want to help them by paying off all their debt? She stares at him. He demands that she answer him and she nods. He tells her that if she really loves them, she’ll forget them completely and not look for them again. That’s for her family's sake.
She nods and asks if he can promise her. A tear runs down her cheek. That he’ll protect her family forever; can he promise her? He responds that she’s the one making promises. Make it so that he can do that.
They’re interrupted by Ji Hyuk arriving. He stops a neighbor and asks if Mom has come home yet. Neighbor is worried. Ji Sook hides her face. He notices them and starts to walk in their direction. Seok Hoon hugs her like that’s what they’re there for. Ji Hyuk walks away. She shoves him away from her.
Hearing Dad worried, Ji Sook starts to freak out. Seok Hoon tells her not to worry. He’ll find Mom. Ji Sook just needs to make the promise, so that he can look for Byeon Ji Sook's mother. Ji Sook nods with tears in her eyes. They return to the house and Mi Yeon drinks and notes that they came in together. Ji Sook goes back to the bedroom. Min Woo is in bed. He looks to be asleep but isn’t. As she sits on the couch, she tries not to cry.
In their bedroom, Mi Yeon casually asks Seok Hoon where he went. He says that he had to urgently finish something at the company. She asks what it was. If he had to go at this time, wasn't it very important? She’s just asking because she’s worried. He says that he was tweaking the contract that is supposed to be signed the next day. He gives her a business card and tells her to call them if she wants to know what he adjusted. He adds that it's good if she knows what's going on in the company as well. He walks away.
She almost rips up the business card but calls them when he’s in the shower. Or pretending to be in the shower... He’s actually listening. Person on the phone confirms that Seok Hoon was telling the truth. She asks person to not tell Seok Hoon that she called. Is she talking to Minion? She hangs up and sighs and rips up the business card. From the bathroom, Seok Hoon smiles.
Min Woo is dreaming of Eun Ha drowning. He mutters that he didn’t do it. He wakes up, terrified. He looks over to where Ji Sook is sleeping – without covers – and goes over to look at her. He decides to cover her up. He notices that she’s having an uncomfortable dream, too. He doesn’t cover her up but leaves her alone.
The next morning, Min Woo’s already dressed when she jumps awake. He tells her that they have something important today so she should quickly wash and get ready. He asks where she went the night before. She was out so late that it disturbed his sleep. She apologizes. He asks why she would even do something that she has to be sorry for. She notices the handkerchief that he left on the coffee table.
At the get together, Yun Soo and Chul try to go over the menu with Ji Sook, but when she sees Seok Hoon, she leaves them to ask about her mother. Chul frets that she’s upset and Yun Soo tells him that Eun Ha’s just shy. Ji Sook asks Seok Hoon if he found Mom. She’s wearing Eun Ha’s necklace again. Mi Yeon steps up and asks what Seok Hoon might be finding. Seok Hoon says that Eun Ha is looking for someone. She just asked him for help. Mi Yeon wants to know who. So she can help, of course. Seok Hoon says it’s Eun Ha’s mother. Or someone who was like a mother to her. She said she wanted to meet the woman since nanny helped her a lot when she was young. Mi Yeon asks if Seok Hoon found her. He says that, of course, he did. He was just about say so. He smiles and tells Mi Yeon that the two of them can talk for a while, right? They walk away, leaving Mi Yeon there to stew.
Seok Hoon tells her that the investment agreements must not be concluded, so she needs to stop it. Assemblyman Seo knows about the corruption and she must use that at her advantage. During the luncheon, bring it up. Naturally say that her father is worried about it, so the Mayor will be scared and won't sign the contract.
Ji Sook asks about her mother. Distracted by the necklace, Seok Hoon says that he already said. He found Mom. She was at a friend's house until late at night and came back home at dawn. Ji Sook wants to know which friend. He replies that it’s someone who makes side dishes at a restaurant located at the crossroads... Kim Ja Young. Ji Sook recognizes the name. He tells her that he’ll let her see Mom after the luncheon.
And... he reaches over and yanks the necklace off her neck. He says that everything is now hers, Seo Eun Ha. Except for this. She wonders what his problem is.
But Seok Hoon lied. Mom’s still missing. Ji Hyuk wonders if Mom went to "that place."
Ji Sook contemplates calling her family. A cough from Dad stops her. He walks up with Stepmom. Who I have to say, looks really pretty with all the clothes they’ve been putting her in. She hasn’t been wearing such severe makeup and hair styles, like the other stuff I’ve seen her in, and it’s making her look very nice. Dad says that the Mayor is curious as to how she’s grown. When Mayor arrives with his wife, she should visit with them. Stepmom tells her to just do what she did at the department store and not feel too burdened. She holds out a present for Ji Sook to give them. They walk away.
Ji Sook calls home. Dad’s reaction reveals Seok Hoon’s lie. Ji Sook is not happy and goes over to confront Seok Hoon. She fumes as she looks at him. He pleasantly asks if she has something to say to him. He suggests that they step to the side. Ji Sook slaps him hard across the face. Seok Hoon glares at her. Emotional, she tells him not to make her promises anymore. She won't believe what he says anymore. She walks away. Seok Hoon exhales to control his temper and follows her.
Ji Sook passes Min Woo on her way to leave. He grabs her arm and asks where she’s going. The mayor is coming soon. She tries to pull away, but he doesn’t let go. He reminds her that this is important. It isn't just a gathering for a meal. Emotional, she tells him to let go of her, but he catches hold of her again. He reminds her about the stock. She laughs bitterly. One percent of the stock at half of the current price is worth billions. She tells him that she doesn't need something like that. She gets in the car. Seok Hoon runs up and knocks rapidly on the car window, asking her to talk with him for a moment! She misunderstood something earlier. He’s not happy when she drives away.
Dad walks up and demands to know what’s going on. Min Woo says that nothing’s wrong. Dad wants to know why she’s acting like that then. Seok Hoon says that he’ll follow her and speak with her. Min Woo answers that he’ll do it. He walks away. Seok Hoon bows to Dad and hurries after Min Woo.
Car chase with Min Woo chasing Ji Sook. Seok Hoon orders Minion to stop Choi Min Woo first. And then Byeon Ji Sook. Stop them at all costs! Minion speeds into action. Min Woo drives along side Ji Sook, rolls down his window and yells at her to pull over. She ignores him. Minion pulls in front of Min Woo, blocking him from following Ji Sook. And continues to do it. Even when Min Woo tries to pass him. They have to stop at a light. Min Woo calls someone and has them call the cell phone company to follow Eun Ha’s GPS. Seok Hoon has placed a bug on her car, so he knows exactly where she is.
When Seok Hoon catches up to her car, he calls her and tells her to go back home now. Then everything will be resolved. She replies that it's all because of him. This all happened because of him! She shouldn't have trusted him in the first place. He tells that whether she trusts him or not isn't important right now! They should think practically. What is she going to do after she finds her mother?! What then? If she goes back now, she’ll live as a murderer. She needs to think about her family. Ji Sook shakes her head and says that she’s going to find her mother first. What happens after is for him to think about.
Seok Hoon threatens to kill her. Ji Sook tells him to go ahead. Do whatever he wants! He throws off his Bluetooth in frustration. He speeds up and rams her car. He rams it again. Car chase involving other cars. Ji Sook is surprisingly sharp with her reflexes. She gets Seok Hoon run off the road but then stops to help him. She pulls him out of his car, wounded. She calls 119 but hangs up before it connects. He mutters that he can kill her but she can't kill him, because she’s a different person. If she goes now, he might die.
She replies that she can kill him, too. Because they aren't any different. She uses his phone to call 119. She tells him that if something happens to her mom, then she won't forgive him. Off she goes to find Mom. She arrives at the house, wearing a big floppy hat and sunglasses. She goes inside and looks at where she used to live. She comes across her watch. She starts to cry.
Ji Sook runs though the village, yelling for Mom. She heads to the market and loses her sunglasses. No one has seen her. She sees someone who looks like Mom. Minion finds her. Woman is not Mom. Minion decides to run Ji Sook over (on Seok Hoon’s order, of course). Min Woo is there and saves her, pulling her out of the way of the car. They land on the ground and he freaks out about the germs. He asks if she knows what she just did to him. They landed under a cherry tree and as the blossoms fall, she says she think she might know where ‘she’ is. Min Woo has no idea what she’s talking about.
Ji Sook jumps up and grabs his arm, begging him to help her. She’ll explain later. He yanks his arm free and almost slaps her in the face doing it. She falls on the ground but scurries forward to grab his leg. She declares that she’ll do anything. Just help her this once. Please? He begs her to let go of him.
Ji Hyuk and Dad have the same idea. Ji Hyuk wants them to call the police, but Dad says that he already did and they wouldn’t do anything because of some orders from the higher up. The police are busy doing something else. As they run away, calling for Mom, Ji Sook and Min Woo arrive with a bunch of policemen. The thing that they were busy with... Heh. Min Woo is panting. She said she will do everything he tells her to do! She replies that if he tells her to die, she’ll die for him. Enough? He waves his hand as he says that it's enough. An officer finds a shoe. Why would Mom leave her shoe?
As Ji Sook hurries forward, she falls. Memory of why the place is special. They planted a tree there. It’s Ji Eun’s tree. Ji Hyuk says that Ji Eun noona’s lucky because she has the biggest tree. So maybe they were twins… Or at least related. When Ji Sook asks where dead people go, Mom says that they go into the hearts of loved ones. Dad suggests they take a picture, a ritual that they will repeat every year on Mom’s birthday. And that’s not morbid. It’s your birthday, Yeobo. Let’s go visit your dead child’s grave!
Ji Hyuk looks at the pictures taken over the years.
Mom is indeed by Ji Sook’s tree. Collapsed and dehydrated. Ji Sook finds her and starts to cry as she cuddles Mom. She apologizes and tells her that she was wrong. Mom opens her eyes and says that she needs to make food for her. Ji Sook weeps and hugs her. Min Woo arrives to witness this. This is not the same woman.
Americanese
- To see someone -- in the literal sense, this means to catch sight of someone. In the context of when Min Woo says it, telling Eun Ha to keep seeing her boyfriend, it means to date someone
- the head of the table -- when seated around a rectangular table, one of the ends where only one person sits is designated as the 'head of the table,' where the person with the most authority or deference sits
- to toe to line -- to do what is expected; to act according to someone else's rules or expectations. Its origin is debated - from being based in sports -- track and field, where athletes line up by placing their foot on the starting line and waiting for the signal (something that's expected) -- to the navy, were sailors were made to stand at attention on deck in any type of weather until dismissed (obeying someone else's rules even if you might want to argue or object) -- to the House of Parliament in London, where members must contain themselves behind the white border during debates (restraining oneself during an emotion-generating situation). Here's more from the Grammarist site.
- to chicken out -- to give into fear and run away from a challenge or conflict; it comes from chickens, in ancient Rome, soldiers would feed sacred poultry before battle and they refused to eat, the army would withdraw because it meant that their gods would not favor them in battle. Here's more from the English Exchange.
- to get the crap beaten out of you -- to be badly beaten so that you cannot stand, the illusion to the idea that the beating weakens you so much that you are likely to deficate on yourself because you cannot move
- to look forward to something -- to anticipate with pleasure
- loan shark - a person who lends money in a predatory manner at a very high rate of interest and with the threat of violence if the loan is not repaid quickly
- to get the goods on (someone) -- to acquire confidential information about someone, especially of a damaging or incriminating nature
- to put (someone away) for good -- this phrase actually contains 2 idioms. To 'put someone away' means to send someone away to a place that they can't return from, like prison or an asylum. 'For good' in this sense means permanently. A literal translation of 'for good' would be for the benefit mankind, as in 'for good or for evil,' but in situations where finality is involved, like closing a business, or sending someone to prison, 'for good,' implies that it is permanent and irrevocable.
- to run into (someone) -- to come across, to meet someone by chance. By saying that Ji Hyuk *literally* ran into someone, it is evoking the other sense of the phrase, to collide with, or crash into, something
- to shut up -- to stop talking; the idea of shutting one's mouth and keeping it closed
- to be up to par -- a variant of this is "to be up to snuff." Both mean that something meets the expected standard; meeting an average amount, degree, quality, condition, standard or the like. It originates from Latin (par in Lating is equal, equal-sized, well-matched) and was adopted in golf to indicate a typical score for any hole. Here's more from The Word Detective.
- creepy old man -- When someone or something is creepy, it is unsettling to the point of physical discomfort, as in a creeping feeling in the flesh
- to make (someone's) skin crawl -- to cause (someone) to have that creeping feeling in the flesh, usually in response to something repulsive or otherworldly
- to stew about (something) -- to think about something that is bothersome for long periods of time
- to put (someone) in (an article of clothing) -- to dress someone in an article of clothing
- at all costs -- sacrifice everything, including one's life, in order to gain something
- the help -- the servants
Thoughts
One of the questions that occurred to me at the beginning of this episode is what is Seok Hoon's reason for doing all this? Why does he seem to specifically hate Min Woo so much? And why does he think that he's in hell right now? It will be interesting to figure out the answers, because Yeon Jung Hoon is doing a great job of making Seok Hoon an enigma. Also, how is Seok Hoon going to explain his car accident? I mean, he's lying on the side of the road half-dead. It's not like the rest of the family isn't going to notice, especially since both he and Min Woo ran off after Eun Ha. How also is he going to explain Eun Ha slapping him across the face, especially to his wife? Particularly since the slap was accompanied by Eun Ha declaring that she won't trust him or his promises any more?
One of the things that I find interesting is that Min Woo seems to be more at ease with the help than he does with his own family and the help genuinely seem to like and care about him. That's a sad statement, but it's a situation that would make Ji Sook's words from the previous episode sound appealing. Add to it that Ji Sook is genuine when she does things, I can see him developing feelings for her, especially after she was more concerned about finding Mom than making money, because he longs for a real relationship with anyone since his mother died.
I think he already feels a sense of responsibility towards her, if for no other reason than he tried to kill her. But he seems like he's genuinely wanting to believe the best about her. And, of course Dad, who is always using everyone, has a big old belly laugh over that idea. But Min Woo seems to be doing things - like mentioning the money from the stock shares - to test her, like he wants to believe what she said at the wedding and the little things that she keeps doing that seem different from the woman he met before.
I can see the "our marriage is a business arrangement" thing being something that keeps making them doubt the other person's affections, because they're both going to say it to protect themselves. In this episode alone, one of them referred to their marriage like that eight times.
I wonder exactly what the story is behind Oma's death. Since Min Woo has a murder board, he has to be trying to uncover the truth as well. Particularly in light of how Doc Kim has been actively working to subvert Min Woo's mental health, it makes me wonder if he's done things to twist Min Woo's memories regarding Oma's death as well. Dad definitely seems touchy when the subject of Oma comes up and I wonder what that means.
Speaking of Dad, I really do not like the man. (1) He is incredibly controlling, (2) He seems to act only for the benefit of himself, (3) His desires supersede anyone else's, (4) He has an almost lecherous attitude when talking to Eun Ha, (5) He has no problem using people (as pawns or otherwise), (6) His affection towards Eun Ha seems directly proportional to how much he thinks she can benefit his desires, (7) He pits his family against each other in an effort to manipulate and control them, and (8) He has no interest in the well-being of anyone but himself. I really can't wait for when Min Woo breaks away from that man's control over his life.
I have to say that I think Ji Sook is incredibly brave and loyal to her family. She actively chose to marry a man who has shown himself to be volatile, violent and unhinged, all for the sake of her family. She stands up to Seok Hoon even though he could easy destroy her. She was willing to throw everything away just to make sure that her mother was okay.
In some ways I think that her family living through her death will actually be good for them and in the end they will come out stronger once everything is resolved. Right now, Papa is actively having to deal with the consequences of his selfishness and laziness: his daughter's death. Up to this point, he's been able to focus on himself rather than the needs of his family and losing his daughter is a flaming reminder of what that attitude will bring. Mom seems to have had enough of her husband's behavior, which is a good thing, because she won't enable him anymore. And Ji Hyuk, although he's now starting down a dangerous path, is actually doing something to help out with the situation, where before it seemed to be all on Ji Sook's shoulders. I really hope that he is using the job with Bad Toupee to get evidence on him, so that they will put him away for good. I also hope that he doesn't do anything that he'll regret.
I've been trying to figure out who might have the desire and motive to kill Eun Ha and the only person that I seem to have a question about is Mi Yeon. Seok Hoon seems very adept at manipulating her -- the business card, for example (was it Minion that she talked to on the phone) -- and she seems very desperate for his claims of affection to be real. Again, it's someone in this family yearning for a real connection free of manipulation and ulterior motive. I can see the anger that she feels towards Seok Hoon getting channeled onto the woman that she suspects is stealing the affection she desires. But again, what about that timeline?
And finally, they introduced a third sibling: Ji Eun. Since Ji Sook knew her and knew about her, and also asked Mom about having a twin, this sister wouldn't have been her twin, but it could have been someone close in age. I wonder if, in the end, it's going to come out that Eun Ha was really Ji Eun. I hope not, because I like the idea of a true doppelganger better than a long-lost sibling and it would stink for Mom to lose her daughter a second time. That sibling thing was one of the reasons I hated the finale of '49 Days,' so I hope the writers leave that trope alone.
