Mask Episode 3 Recap

Episode begins with Ji Sook in bed and Seok Hoon ordering her to wake up. She slowly opens her eyes. She’s in the hospital. A room similar to the one Eun Ha is in. Ji Sook sits up, which hurts. Understandable because of being in a car accident. Seok Hoon pulls out his phone and tells her to write what it says down:
채권자가 죽으면 채무는 사라진다. 이 방법밖에 없다.
Which roughly translates: When the creditor dies, debt disappears. There are only two ways.

Clever, Seok Hoon.

Ji Sook looks at the phone and asks, “What is this?” Coldly, Seok Hoon declares that there’s no time. He repeats his order and tells her to hurry. Ji Sook complies. Ji Sook translates what she’s writing for us: If the creditor dies, the debt must disappear. There is no other way than this...

Once she’s done, Seok Hoon takes the paper and stuffs it in the breast pocket of his suit jacket. He tells her to listen carefully. Her name is no longer Byeon Ji Sook but Seo Eun Ha. She was at her fiancé's house and she fell into the swimming pool. From that shock, she’ll be diagnosed with memory loss. Ji Sook asks if she has memory loss. Almost sneering at her, he tells her that she’s going to *act* like she does. Seo Eun Ha's parents are coming right now. When she meets them, don't say a word. Just be still.

Ji Sook asks what happened to the other people. What about Seo Eun Ha? Seok Hoon orders her not to worry about those things. He leans in closer. His tone is almost down-right sinister. In fact, don't think at all. From now on, he’ll think for her. That’s never good. She just has to do as he says. Does she understand? Ji Sook takes in what he’s said. Strongly, Seok Hoon repeats that he said ‘do you understand?’ She nods.

There’s a knock at the door. He pushes her to lie back on the bed. The door slides open. We don’t see who it is. Ji Sook looks toward the door. Seok Hoon bows to whoever is entering. Which makes me think that it’s not Min Woo but Eun Ha's parents.

[Episode 3 -- The Best Decision, The Worst Decision]

Flashback of the struggle. Min Woo shoving Eun Ha to the ground and strangling her with her purse. So how did she end up in the pool? She shoves him off and starts to walk away, but the drug takes effect and she falls into the pool.

It’s night and Min Woo is staring out at the pool. He shakes his head. There's no way... that makes no sense. Why would he...? Keep thinking like that. I don’t think you did it. But who did? And why would your mind make you think you did it? Mi Yeon arrives, carrying a glass of wine. She’s still in the same clothes, so this must be the same day. She gets his attention and walks over to him. He puts both of his hands in his pockets and looks out at the pool. Almost like he’s putting up his defenses.

Mi Yeon tells him that there’s no need to pretend that he’s okay. It'd be strange if he was. He chuckles. She offers him the wine and asks if he wants one. When you're anxious, intoxication is a pretty good method. He turns to her and asks what she wants to say. She’s not being adversarial, but he’s responding to her like one. I wonder why. Based on her comment to Seok Hoon about taking over the company, Min Woo thinks she’s out to get him. I wonder why. His hardness hardens her tone and expression. She says that Eun Ha almost died. Another accident like that could happen again.

Her expression softens again. She’s saying this as his noona. This marriage... Don't go through with it. Her eyes look a little glassy. Are those real tears? Is she saying this as his noona or a jealous wife? Min Woo drops his head and then sets his chin. It’s obvious that this is painful for him… the thought that it might be his fault. He tells her ‘no’ and says that he knows what she’s worried about. How far up in the business he could go, holding Seo Eun Ha's hand. Wow, even now, he’s on the defense. Poor Min Woo. That father would accept him and include him in his will. That's why she’s worried.

Mi Yeon doesn’t even deny it. So he’s right to be on the defensive. Mi Yeon asks if he’s saying he’s going through with the marriage. With the person he almost killed? Min Woo replies that Eun Ha herself will say who almost killed her. He was just about to go and find out. He starts to walk away. Mi Yeon calls after him that if he really did it, is he going to stop then? Dispassionately – I keep using this word, but I can’t think of any other way to describe the detached way of talking that they get – he raises his eyebrow and replies that even if that were the case, nothing would change because he could compensate her. Since it is all about the money, right? Wow. Poor guy. Doing this to get fully acknowledged and be included in Dad’s will. He walks away.

Ji Sook is lying in bed. Eun Ha’s parents are talking to her. She isn’t saying anything. Jong Hoon’s (EHDad) secretary enters and tells him that they have to leave now if he wants to catch his flight to the States. Why’s a Congressman going to the US? EHDad tells Ji Sook that she will receive treatment from the nation's best doctors. From the bottom of her feet to every single hair on her head, they will check to see if everything is okay, so all she needs to do is rest. She nods. Jung Sun (EHMom) says that she’ll call. They leave.

Seok Hoon snarks that it’s such a relief, that she has such a capable father. He grabs some clothes out of the closet and tosses them on the bed. He orders her to get ready to leave. They have no time. Hurry!

As Eun Ha’s parents drive away – and what I find interesting is they have a driver and a secretary. Most times, the secretary is the driver – EHDad says that something’s wrong. The way Eun Ha looked at him... it felt foreign, like a completely different person. EHMom tells him that of course it would seem like that. When was the last time he talked to Eun Ha for more than 10 minutes? With this opportunity, they can help Eun Ha forget all the bad memories and be left with just the good ones. That’s never good, trying to rewrite the past. EHDad thanks her and says that Eun Ha's mother in Heaven is probably also thankful. So Eun Ha’s mother is dead? Or just left.

Back in the hospital room, Ji Sook has gotten dressed. Did Seok Hoon step out or did she have to change her clothes with him in the room? Minion enters with a gurney. Seok Hoon tells Ji Sook that someone will emerge. No matter what happens, she must not scream. If she screams, people will come. Ji Sook slowly turns around. Seok Hoon nods for Minion to act. They did not just stuff Eun Ha under the bed. They did not just stuff Eun Ha under the bed… They did. I can’t believe they stuffed her under the bed. She looks really pale. Is she dead?

Ji Sook’s curiosity gets the better of her and she turns around to see Minion pull Eun Ha out from under the bed. She clamps her hand over her mouth to prevent herself from screaming and Seok Hoon helps her. Intensely, he says that he told her not to scream, Seo Eun Ha-shi. Ji Sook remembers seeing Eun Ha at the department store. I guess the doppelganger legend is true, then, since Eun Ha saw Ji Sook first.

They wheel the gurney down the hall with a sheet covering Eun Ha’s face. Seok Hoon is pulling Ji Sook along because it’s painful to walk. What with being in a car accident where she basically slammed into a wall. Ji Sook gasps and tells them to wait a minute. She grabs her chest and weakly says that she doesn’t think that she can do this. She asks to use the restroom. Seok Hoon sighs, irritated, and tells her to hold it. She whines that she really doesn't think she can hold it. She really doesn't feel well. Why aren’t they wheeling her in a wheel chair? That would make sense. Then she wouldn’t have to walk. Seok Hoon frowns but gives the nod to Minion to go ahead.

In the bathroom, Ji Sook desperately looks for a way out. A woman exits a stall and she tries to borrow the woman's phone – looking desperate. Woman just glares at her and leaves, leaving her body mist behind. Seeing it, Ji Sook knows what she has to do. She sighs to prepare herself and then chugs the body mist. So gross. Smart and you're in a hospital, so you wouldn't end up dying.

Leaving the bathroom, she is in pain. Seok Hoon grabs her arm and tells her to hurry. She tells him to wait. As he asks why she’s like that again, Ji Sook starts vomiting. She moans that her insides feel queasy and says that she shouldn’t be released yet. There’s a crowd of concerned patients and hospital staff. And yet not one of the nurses or doctors have come to help yet. Just gawk. Seok Hoon has no choice but to take her back to her room.

After the nurses leave, Seok Hoon pulls out her keys and tells Ji Sook that they’re the keys to her house. She rushed toward the cliff with the car in which a loan shark was riding, because she thought "if the creditor dies, the debt must disappear." He holds up the note. Ji Sook sits up, worried. He continues that the car couldn't stop before hitting the edge of the cliff, and when the man next to her tried to get away, she stabbed him in the neck with her keys. Other people fled, but she and that man... both of them died. She can report it to the police if she wants, but proving that she didn't kill him and that she was framed is going to be really difficult. Not really. Considering what he’s doing, it wouldn’t be that hard to get anyone to believe her. Seok Hoon adds that it will be difficult because the words of the strong are the truth and the words of the weak are lies. Ouch. That’s telling. But in many ways, true. The victors write history. Ji Sook knows she has no way out.

Min Woo arrives at the hospital and parks, but his OCD bugs him because he’s not quite parallel to the lines. He almost fixes it but leaves to go see Eun Ha… just missing Minion pushing Eun Ha on the gurney. Then Min Woo changes his mind because he can’t just leave it. Minion quickly tries to pull Eun Ha out of Min Woo’s sight line, but he’s not quite successful. Min Woo sees the gurney but before he goes to investigate, Seok Hoon calls and tells him that Eun Ha woke up. He acts like he called because he wanted to make sure that Min Woo could sleep well. Min Woo says that he’s at the hospital right now and is heading up to see her.

Camera pans and we see that Seok Hoon is watching the whole thing. Innocently, he acts like he has no idea that Min Woo is at the hospital. He says that it probably wouldn't be good to meet her right now. When Min Woo questions that, Seok Hoon says that she can't remember what happened at all. Min Woo wants to know what he means. And he still hasn’t moved, so the gurney is still in his sight line. Seok Hoon knows this. Seok Hoon says that it’s probably the same reason as him. The shock must have been too big.

A security guard arrives in the parking lot, which makes things even more precarious. Seok Hoon sees it but keeps his cool. He tells Min Woo to go home tonight. Wouldn't it be best for today? Min Woo disagrees and decides to head up. He hangs up the phone and starts to walk toward the body lying on the gurney. Seok Hoon yells at him and waves like he’s happy to see Min Woo. He tells Min Woo to come up. This distracts the security guard as well, giving Minion time to pull the body out of sight.

Min Woo heads up to the room. Ji Sook pretends to be asleep. Seok Hoon nicely says that she must have just fallen asleep. It might be better to come back tomorrow. Min Woo remembers what he recalled during hypnosis, including the marks on Eun Ha’s neck from where the purse was strangling her. He can’t tell if Eun Ha has them. He declares that he’ll wait there until she wakes up. Seok Hoon says that Eun Ha won't be able to remember anything when she wakes up. She can't speak properly either. Not looking away from the sleeping Eun Ha, Min Woo repeats that he said he’d wait. He'll watch this place now, so Seok Hoon can go.

Seok Hoon doesn’t move. Min Woo turns to look at him and asks why he’s hesitating. If it's just the two of them, does Seok Hoon think he’ll do something to her? Seok Hoon looks like he’s going to reply but Min Woo adds that if that isn't what Seok Hoon is thinking, then please leave. Boxed him into a corner, there. Stay so he can control the encounter with Ji Sook and protect his master plan, and show that his support of Min Woo is all fake. Leave to keep up the charade and Ji Sook could blow things before they're really even begun. Seok Hoon has to nod and go.

After Seok Hoon leaves – with the dramatic, sinister look back – Min Woo goes to pull down the covers, but Ji Sook is gripping them. He notices this and tells her that he thinks she’s awake. She opens her eyes and looks at him. He asks if she’s okay. She nods. He asks how much she remembers. Perhaps having an argument with him... No, right? It's not like that. There’s a touch of desperation in his voice. Ji Sook doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t know what she’s supposed to say. I would say ‘no.’ Especially since he's seeming desperate for her to say no.

Crazy eyes come out. Min Woo rips the covers off and grabs Ji Sook’s arms, standing over her. Desperately he orders her to tell him! Tell him it's not him. Tell him he didn't do it!!! Ji Sook looks away, terrified. Min Woo screams at her to TELL HIM!!!! Seok Hoon runs back into the room and pulls Min Woo off of her, asking what he’s doing. Min Woo pulls his arms free, demanding Seok Hoon let go. Ji Sook pulls the blankets to cover herself again. Min Woo says that he didn't do anything. Seok Hoon puts a brotherly hand on Min Woo’s should and says they should leave. If not, she'll get shocked again. This persuades Min Woo and Ji Sook is terrified. I would be, too. Min Woo was downright terrifying right then.

Ji Sook’s Mom asks Ji Hyuk if he’s heard from Ji Sook. Mom is worried. Papa’s starting to get worried, too. Ji Hyuk isn’t. She's probably drunk and sleeping somewhere. He tries calling but her phone is off. He notices a text from her with a video message. Oh, no, it’s the angry, crying one. Ji Hyuk says that this is definitely proof that she’s drunk. Parents aren’t so sure.

Seok Hoon and Minion take Ji Sook back to Eun Ha’s house. Why do people put huge portraits of themselves up on the wall when they're single? I never understand that. You know what you look like. Anyone who visits you knows what you look like. The one of Eun Ha is pretty, though. She looks happy. Ji Sook stares at the portrait and then the apartment. She says that no matter how much they look alike, they’ve lived differently for over 10 years. It's difficult living someone else's life all of a sudden. Seok Hoon replies that it’s hard, but nothing's impossible.

Seo Eun Ha studied abroad since she was young so she never spent time with her family. That's sad. Her biological mother died 20 years ago. Her dad was doing his political activities and her stepmother was busy with supporting her husband. After studying abroad, she always lived alone, and didn't have a particular job. Ji Sook looks at pictures of smiling Eun Ha with friends, painting. Seok Hoon says that after she marries, Eun Ha will live with her husband. So there aren't many chances to meet someone who knows Eun Ha. Ji Sook can't take her eyes away from the smiling face of Eun Ha. Particularly since she recently saw a mostly dead one, it is rather unnerving.

Seok Hoon presents the ring box to Ji Sook and tells her to make everything hers. And I bet her ring size is smaller than Eun Ha’s so the ring fits. Ji Sook opens the box to see the ring. She remembers picking it up and meeting Eun Ha. She takes it out and tries it on. It fits like it was meant to be there. And didn’t fit Eun Ha’s finger, even after it was resized.

Yun Soo and Chul are taking care of Min Woo’s bedroom, making sure that everything is OCD perfect. She measures with measuring tape the placement of the throw blanket on the bed and he’s measuring to make sure that the remotes are perfectly parallel. Wow. She walks over to him and stumbles, causing a glass of juice to spill onto the floor. They stare at it, terrified. All you have to do is immediately dilute it so that it doesn’t stain and sop up the excess water. It will totally work. I’ve done it lots of times with Kool-Aid.

Yun Soo worries what they’ll do. Sounding like a martyr, Chul says that he put the glass there so he’ll take all the blame. He looks at her and – sounding tragic – says that even without him, Manager Kim (Yun Soo) will do well. He’ll cheer for her even from the distance. She looks touched. Do they like each other? He tells her to hurry and get away from there. She replies that she can’t! She can go somewhere else because she’s young and pretty but he’s all old now, so it won't work. Ouch and I laugh. And could they sound any *more* melodramatic?

Min Woo arrives. They report the spill and instead of getting upset, Min Woo says that he understands. Yun Soo says that she’ll put in a new carpet. He tells her not to worry about it and asks for them to leave. When they question him, he repeats that he’s okay. They hurry out. Min Woo takes off his jacket. He glances at the stain, irritated, and throws the jacket onto his couch. He looks out the window and sees Eun Ha’s body floating in the pool. It vanishes. He sits down and the juice stain starts to spread, looking like blood. Min Woo pulls out his medication and shoves a whole bunch of pills in his mouth.

He looks up at the chandelier and it vibrates. He can’t breathe. He tries to open his shirt, pulling off a button. As he gasps for breath, he crawls up the round staircase and grabs a book. A key is hidden inside. Where's the key to?

At Eun Ha’s, Seok Hoon is having Ji Sook study basic English and French. It's not about really doing a good job, but acting like you are. Ji Sook asks if she’s not going to go to Hell when she dies, for doing all of this? Seok Hoon asks if she really believes in Hell. She says that she doesn’t and he tells her to stop worrying then. He gives her a CD with music on it to listen to and memorize. That would suck if their tastes were totally different. He hands her a yearbook with classmates’ faces to memorize.

Ji Sook looks inside. Someone has written opposite a picture of smiling Eun Ha with a blonde, that "If you wear a mask, you ultimately can't be happy." She asks Seok Hoon how he knows so much about Seo Eun Ha? He knows her house password. Seok Hoon answers that he knows more about Byeon Ji Sook. Should he say some of it? She shakes her head.

Seok Hoon announces that he’s coming back the next day so she should make everything hers. He starts to leave, but Minion is staying. Ji Sook hurries after Seok Hoon and asks about it, since a man being in a house where a girl lives by herself... Minion glares at her. Seok Hoon grabs Eun Ha’s purse and starts to strangle Ji Sook with the straps. He tells her that if it wasn’t for him, she’d be dead. She’s breathing because of him. If she wants to return as Byeon Ji Sook, she should just die. If she’ll be Seo Eun Ha, he’ll let her live… because he has that kind of power. Doesn’t she agree?

Ji Sook moans and he squeezes tighter. He repeats that he asked if she agrees. She nods. He releases her. So much for her not having any marks on her neck. He throws the purse on the floor and says that he knows what she’s constantly thinking. This situation is already too big. She can't turn back now. Ji Sook catches her breath and says that she’s not thinking what he’s thinking. And take that person out immediately. Seok Hoon replies that Seo Eun Ha was this type of person, too. She always got what she wanted and did whatever she did. Ji Sook says that Eun Ha probably thought this too, “I don't want to be with this guy all night.” Seok Hoon announces that he’ll trust her and he and Minion leave.

Loan Shark is having his surviving Goon try to collect the money that was in the van out of the ocean. He screams in frustration that it’s lost. Doesn’t Goon know how he collected that money? Give his money back! The police arrive and arrest them.

Ji Sook looks to see if Minion is waiting outside the door. He isn’t, but the front door won’t open. How'd they manage that? Ji Sook checks out the front and Minion is watching the apartment. She goes back inside and finds a phone.

Ji Sook’s family is worried. Phone rings and Papa answers. There’s a pause as the person on the other end of the line doesn’t say anything.

Ji Sook sadly says that a person is dead. It was an accident. All of it. It just happened like that. She hangs up and starts to cry. What does she do now? As she cries, we see that the phone has been disconnected from the wall, so she wasn’t talking to anyone.

The person on the phone with Papa isn’t Ji Sook, but someone calling about money. Dad hangs up his phone and puts on his jacket. He’s going to the police to report Ji Sook missing. Ji Hyuk still thinks his sister is just drunk somewhere. Mom wants to believe that, so she agrees with Ji Hyuk and tells Papa to wait until morning. Even though movies and TV police shows like to say that it has to be 24- to 48-hours that someone is missing before they’ll do anything, in real life, you don’t have to wait if you have a serious suspicion that something is wrong.

Min Woo writes in his journal, asking him mother, why he thinks that she’s alive? Is she really alive? That would be a trip. This is does have makjang elements to it. Is he really crazy? Did he really strangle his fiancée? It’s the murder board again. If he really did that... What should he do? Please tell him that he didn't do that, Oma.

Night. Minion is not leaning against the hood of the car anymore. Ji Sook takes some sheets that she has fashioned into a rope and ties it to the balcony. She slowly lowers herself down the sheet. Minion is in the car, listening to classical music. Wouldn't picture a sociopath liking classical music. Ji Sook makes it down to the floor below her. A little boy is sitting by the window and looks at her when she knocks.

She’s able to make it to the police station. It is very busy. As she walks forward, she hesitates. She thinks about everything that Seok Hoon has said. She steps inside and when the police man asks, she says that she came to report something. He gets a call and tells her to wait. It’s about the accident and they’ve found the victim’s body. The computer screen has a picture of her on it. They’re still looking for the assailant’s body.

Ji Sook is stunned to see herself and staggers backward. Seok Hoon walks into her and drops her keys, which are now in an evidence bag. He tells her to pick them up. She remembers what he said and hands them back. He smiles and walks away. She sees him respectfully greeted by several officers and remembers how he said that the words of the strong are the truth, and the words of the weak are lies. She staggers out of the station.

Min Woo is now waiting with Chang Soo outside of Eun Ha’s apartment. Chang Soo wonders if it wouldn't be better to come back in the morning, but when Min Woo glares at him, he changes his tune. He spots Ji Sook walking slowly back to the apartment. Min Woo walks over to her. She steps back a little when she realizes it’s him. He asks if she’s feeling okay? She nods and then changes her mind. She's not okay. She says that she wants to rest so please go back home.

She starts to walk away but Min Woo reaches out his arm to block her. He tells her that he just wants to verify one thing and reaches for her scarf. She steps backward and asks what he’s doing. He tells her to just wait a second. Then crazy eyes comes out as he says that it'll only be a second. He grabs at the scarf and she falls to the ground. But the scarf falls off, revealing the marks from where Seok Hoon strangled her with the purse straps. Min Woo, of course, thinks that he made them. He’s horrified and staggers backward.

Trying not to cry, he reaches down and picks up the scarf. He tenderly drapes it around her neck and ties it. She looks up at him and he looks broken. He apologizes. Sincerely. He stands and tells her that they should meet again at the dinner meeting. He walks away with Chang Soo hurrying after him. She watches him go – a little puzzled.

Minion drives Seok Hoon in the car. He thinks of his meeting with Doc Kim. Doc Kim says that Min Woo isn’t sure when he lost his memory. Even with just one word, his memory could return. Skip to the hypnosis session, where Doc Kim is implanting the memory, telling Min Woo that he pushed Seo Eun Ha down and strangled her. Doc Kim gives the details: he used the handbag to strangle her. In the car, Seok Hoon smiles as he imagines it. Not evil at all to relish that.

Doc Kim declares that the person who died in front of his eyes, there’s a way to make Min Woo believe that she may be alive. Seok Hoon pays a woman to wear Oma’s pendant and walk by Min Woo. Just like Pavlov's classical conditioning of dogs. When they hear a bell sound, the dogs drool. When he sees the necklace, Min Woo will meet his mother. Wow. They are twisted. And Doc Kim has got to be making a lot of money. Seok Hoon smiles again.

Now at the edge of the cliff, he thinks of himself with Eun Ha, giving her a necklace and then taking the necklace off her body. He touches her face gently and cries. He thinks of her smiling at him. Minion throws Eun Ha’s body off the cliff, wrapped up, and it hits the side of the cliff several times as it falls down. Dang! What a way to treat the body of the woman you loved. Seok Hoon actually reacts with shock at it. Eun Ha’s body sinks and Seok Hoon sadly stares at where it entered the ocean.

Ji Sook’s family has finally gone to the police. Mom mentions the loan call. Papa discounts it, but Mom thinks it might be something. Policeman notes that there was one time where she got drunk some place and didn’t come home, so they shouldn’t worry too much and for now just wait at home. What kind of lame police work is that? If a report comes in, he will let them know immediately. Papa is indignant. His daughter has gone missing. How could he not worry? He asks Cop what Cop would do if *his* daughter was missing. Cop gets upset that he would even suggest something happening to his daughter. Papa says that that’s his point. Papa asks Cop what he’s supposed to do while he’s waiting. Eat ramen?

Another cop enters, asking about the clothes she was wearing. He shows them the file about Eun Ha’s body. They go to the identification. The police have Ji Sook’s keys and phone. They ask for someone to identify Ji Sook’s face. Ji Hyuk stops his father but Papa has to look. They all reel as they look at Eun Ha. Their Ji Sook is dead. They sob. Mom shakes her head in disbelief. Mom doesn’t want to leave the body. She starts to protest that it’s not Ji Sook and then weeps that it’s her fault. They should have reported Ji Sook sooner. I guess because I know that Ji Sook is still alive, this sad scene doesn’t make me cry.

Ji Sook and Seok Hoon are watching the news and it’s playing out just as Seok Hoon said it would. Police are speculating that she killed a loan shark and then committed suicide. When Ji Sook sums it up that way, Seok Hoon says that it wasn’t her, it was Byeok Ji Sook. The news switches to another story. Seok Hoon looks at her and says that she’s Seo Eun Ha. That's how she will be able to go until the end. Ji Sook asks what will be there if she goes until the end. Seok Hoon replies that it’s something that would make her smile. Not creepy at all.

Family meet-and-greet dinner. Ji Sook chugs some wine. Min Woo sighs. EHMom asks if Eun Ha isn’t drinking too much? Ji Sook replies that she’s just so nervous. Min Woo looks down – since he thinks it’s because of him attacking her. Mi Yeon rolls her eyes. Stepmom asks after Eun Ha’s health, since the accident. EHDad says that Eun Ha is a lot better. She even remembered a lot of things. If her treatment continues, she'll be better. Ji Sook looks like a caged animal.

Stepmom says that it’s a relief, since they heard about Eun Ha’s memory loss. Dad clears his throat to get Stepmom to be quiet. Iron fist. Unpleasant thoughts Dad’s direction. Dad turns the topic to the wedding. Is it too much to continue as they have planned? EHDad says they should continue like before. Up till now, Eun Ha has been living by herself. It might be better if she lived with someone else.

EHDad says that even Son-in-Law Choi is concerned and treasuring Eun Ha. Don't Eun Ha think so? Ji Sook doesn’t say anything. Min Woo looks at her and the scarf around her neck and says that he can't do this marriage. Everyone – including Ji Sook – looks at him, shocked. He says that he’s not confident that he can live well. He apologizes, bows and starts to leave. Dad strongly orders him to sit back down! The moment he leaves this room, Min Woo can't enter his house again. Min Woo’s nose flairs in frustration. Dad adds that Min Woo understands what he’s saying, doesn't Min Woo? Min Woo stands there, frozen.

His voice almost gentle, Dad tells Eun Ha that it’s only if she’s okay that this marriage will continue as before. What will she do? Min Woo sighs, struggling. Because he’s trying to do the right thing. Dad asks if Eun Ha’s going to answer him. And if it were my daughter, there’s no way I would let her go live with a father-in-law who was like that. But Eun Ha’s parents need the money, so they don’t say anything.

Ji Sook says the quote she read in Eun Ha’s yearbook: “If you wear a mask, you ultimately can't be happy.” Min Woo looks at her. Ji Sook stands and says that if you wear a mask pretending to love someone you don't love, then you won't be happy. So, she’s going to live with love. Sincerely. Min Woo, Seok Hoon and Mi Yeon all wonder what she means. Ji Sook says that she wants to live like that happily with her family. If that works, she won't look for anything else. So I guess that means a ‘yes.’

Night club. Where did all the white people come from? Someone is obnoxiously being a ‘Whoo!’ girl. Min Woo walks up the bar and grabs a water. He takes it after checking the lid to see if the seal is unbroken. DJ announces that they should celebrate like crazy. This is Choi Min Woo's last party as a bachelor! Everyone cheers and chants his name. He walks through the cheering crowd like he doesn’t believe anyone’s sincere. Someone offers him a drink and, after taking it, tosses it aside.

Two guys walk up and congratulate Min Woo. One says that if Eun Ha's father actually ends up as the president, SJ group will prosper. Min Woo sighs. Other one says Min Woo should smile more. This is his bachelor party. Enjoy it. Min Woo calls them out, saying that his mall isn’t going to stock their cheap clothing. First one mentions that rumor about Min Woo liking guys… Is that what he’s looking for? Plus he heard that Eun Ha saw a lot of men. When she studied abroad, she lived with someone. Other one says that Min Woo’s heart must be broken. First one asks if he should go on the honeymoon with him, to help him out.

That’s enough for Min Woo. He shoves the guy to the ground. He picks up a chair and smashes it next to the guy’s head. He tells the guy that he’s going to pass, but thanks. Guy’s wife would hate it. He walks off and the crowd parts to let him through. Some bachelor party.

Ji Sook enters a hotel room. Some woman is laughing hysterically at something. Actually, it’s 2 women, who are laughing at something that Min Woo has said. He’s sitting, slumped in a chair, drinking. They stop laughing when they see her. Min Woo sighs and tells the women to get lost. They obey. Almost smiling, Min Woo tells Eun Ha that they should have a drink together, since they’re getting married and all. When she hesitates, he laughs and asks if it’s awkward. He stops smiling and asks if she’s scared.

Ji Sook asks what his reason is for calling her there. He sighs and says that he said to sit. His neck hurts from looking up at her. She sits on the far end of the couch. He stands up and puts his empty glass on the table. He walks over to stand over her. Not intimidating at all. He tells her the story of the frog and the scorpion. When it rained, the river overflowed. A scorpion who could not swim asked a frog for help. Min Woo leans in and says that the scorpion says he won't sting so please help him cross the river. He’s being scary. Ji Sook is understandably nervous.

Suddenly, Min Woo grabs her arms and shoves her down on the sofa. He leans over her and says that the frog believed those words so he carried the scorpion on his back and swam across the river. Min Woo looks at the marks on her neck. Starting to tear up, he says that eventually, that scorpion stung the frog. Before the frog died, he asked why the scorpion did it since they both are going to die now. Then, the scorpion answered. Min Woo leans in closer. And man, I feel sorry for him, he is so much pain right now. I feel sorry for Ji Sook because he is being bejeezus scary. He says that it can't be helped. He's a scorpion.

He releases her and stands up. He tells her to tell everyone first that she doesn't want to do it. Because he already tried to back out and Dad won't let him. He’s telling her not to show up at the wedding ceremony. Or else, he’s going to kill her. Which, from his perspective his true because he’ll hurt her in spite of himself. But it comes across as a death threat, especially after being terrifying. He reaches over and grabs a drink and tells her to go. Disappear. Ji Sook starts to say something when Min Woo interrupts. Didn't she hear him? Then, please leave! He accentuates that last part by smashing the bottle he’s holding on the floor. Ji Sook grabs her head terrified.

She slowly climbs to her feet and starts to walk, terrified. Min Woo tells her that he’ll give her whatever she wants from the contract. What her family ultimately wants is money. They will not see each other anymore. Ji Sook tries not to cry as she leaves the room. So does Min Woo.

Loan Shark is at the police station. He can’t believe that they’re just going to let him go. Cop says that they haven’t done anything wrong, so that’s why they’re letting them go. What about the guy they almost beat to death? Where is he? They happily agree to what the police are saying and even visit the funeral. Loan Shark is obnoxious.

Wedding. Lovely hanboks. Gun Woo is waiting to see if Eun Ha is going to show up. Ji Sook is getting ready. Seeing another mother and daughter, she thinks of her own mother and feels sad. She decides to call her mother.

Family is preparing to cremate her. Oma is weeping and apologizing. A relative answers the phone and Ji Sook can hear Mom sobbing in the background. Everyone is weeping. Ji Sook can’t take it and runs out of the room. Minion has been watching her. He calls Seok Hoon with the news.

Ji Sook arrives at her funeral. She stops at a distance and watches. Mom keeps sobbing. She almost goes up to them, but Seok Hoon wordlessly stops her.

Marriage ceremony. Min Woo is waiting. They announce for the bride to enter. No one enters. Announcer asks for the groom’s song but stops when Min Woo glares at him. Then everyone starts clapping as Ji Sook and EHDad enter. Mi Yeon notes her husband's late arrival. Both Ji Sook and Min Woo look so excited. Funeral excited.

Ji Sook thinks back to what Seok Hoon said to her, after he caught her. If she wants to go, then go. Because the choice is ultimately hers. Ji Sook starts to walk toward her family and then she sees Loan Shark and Goon, who is carrying the family’s Condolence Box. She changes her mind.

Eun Ha’s body is cremated as Ji Sook's family weeps.

Min Woo steps forward and shakes EHDad’s hand and takes his bride. As they walk forward together, he tells her that he clearly told her, he’s going to kill her. She replies that when it rains, the river overflows. For a frog to cross the river by himself, the rising river is too scary. The incident in the pool that day, they should just say that she slipped and fell in. That he has nothing to do with it. He looks at her, surprised. What's the reason for saying that? She answers that they’re a married couple now. They’re family now. Aren't family members supposed to be on the same side? No matter what had happened. Min Woo’s face says what he’s thinking: not in my family. And that he doesn’t believe her sincerity at all.

Couple acknowledges the audience and bows. Everyone claps.

Americanese

  1. to box (someone) into a corner - comes from the sport, boxing. If your opponent traps you in one of the corners of the ring (even though it's square, it's called a boxing ring), it's bad because it's easier for your opponent to pound on you. You're forced to just defend yourself instead of inflicting damage on your opponent. In the same way, when you box someone into a corner, you basically force that person into course of action that s/he might not otherwise take.
  2. to change (one's) tune -- in the face of opposition, to change a stand on an issue, especially when it will bring an advantage to do so; to express a different opinion or behave in a different way
  3. to reel - to swoon, be stunned by something
  4. iron fist - as in the phrase, "to rule with an iron fist;" it means firmness or ruthlessness of attitude or behavior; despotic control; cruel and unyielding in attitude or approach
  5. 'Whoo' girl - one of those obnoxious girls who, when drunk, like to enthusiastically scream 'whoo!' at anything, acting like it's amazing when really it's not, in an attempt to be fun and attractive
  6. bejeezus scary - used an intensive or to express surprise, it probably comes from the phrase 'by Jesus' and is traditionally attributed to the Irish; a situation so scary that it causes one to speak an oath. You can find a discussion of the origin of bejeezus here.
  7. to feel for (someone) - to be able to sympathize and/or feel compassion for someone who is suffering
  8. to be stuck with (something) - in the context of something sharp, such as a pin, this phrase means to be poked with the pin; in this context, it means to end up with in an inescapable way
  9. to be tired of (someone) - to be in the mindset where the thought of having to interact or deal with someone makes you feel tired and/or annoyed
  10. to throw (one's) hat in the ring - another phrase coming from the sport of boxing. As mentioned above, the mat that boxers compete on and hold their match on is called a ring. In the early 20th century, fairgrounds held boxing competitions where the public was invited to try its skill against the resident pugilist. A potential participant would indicate his willingness to enter the ring and box by throwing his hat into the ring. At that time, men wore hats, so bare-headed man would be easily identified as a competitor as he made his way up to the ring. Nowadays, it meets to do something that makes it clear you want to compete with other people. The term is often used when talking about a politician declaring his candidacy for a political position; since politics is much like boxing, it's easy to see how the two things became associated. You can find a discussion of the phrase's origin here and here.
  11. Puppet master - a person, group, or country that covertly controls another; comes from puppets, inanimate dolls/marionettes which become animated because of someone pulling on strings, the person who controls the strings is considered the puppet's master

Thoughts

Wow, so much revealed. But first, I just have to say that I feel for both Ji Sook and Min Woo. Ji Sook is stuck with either being branded a murderer or marrying a crazy man. But at least by marrying the crazy man, she can help her family, which is what I think she was thinking when she said what she said at the wedding.

I can’t believe that Loan Shark took all the condolence money. That man is evil. With a really bad wig, too. I’m tired of him already.

And poor Min Woo. He thinks he tried to kill Eun Ha in spite of himself. The poor man. He’s fighting so desperately to hold onto his sanity… only to be betrayed by everyone. How was it *not* a surprise to me that Doc Kim was on Seok Hoon’s payroll and playing a part in Min Woo being crazy. The fact that Doc Kim was the one who proposed the stuff. Wow. And Seok Hoon is COLD. He’s going to get colder, too, now that Eun Ha is dead. I still can’t believe that he stuffed her under the bed and then tossed her off the cliff like that. And why wouldn’t those contusions that occurred post-mortem show up on an autopsy? Why wouldn’t the police be suspicious?

We know, definitively, that Min Woo didn’t kill Eun Ha, because Doc Kim planted that idea in Min Woo’s brain. But who did try to kill her? It wouldn’t have been Seok Hoon, because he loves Eun Ha and she’s essential to whatever plan he has going to destroy Min Woo. I can’t see it being Dad or Stepmom, because neither really has motive. I can’t see it being one of the servants. The only person who is left is Mi Yeon, but how is that possible? She was in with Seok Hoon when Eun Ha fell into the pool. Unless more time passed than what we were lead to believe.

And how stupid are the police? One note and they blame Ji Sook for everything? And where is the guy that Loan Shark almost killed? He could testify and clear things up.

Consistently, which I like, they’ve been portraying Min Woo as a good guy. I mean, he doesn’t want to believe he could hurt Eun Ha or try to kill her, so desperate that he comes across as unhinged. When he scares her and rips off her scarf, he tenderly puts it back on and apologizes for hurting her. He doesn’t really care what people say about him, but he gets touchy when someone insults his fiancée. He tries to get Eun Ha to back out of the wedding because he doesn’t want to hurt her. I really hope that Ji Sook figures out what’s going on with him – as far as being drugged – and helps him soon, since her speech at the wedding seems to say that she’s on his side, since they’re now family.

I wonder what Min Woo is thinking about that whole speech, because he was certainly surprised by what she said. I don’t think he believes a word of it, but wants to. And I think that Ji Sook is going to win him over, because she’s a genuinely nice person. I love that they really paint her as someone with no other choice, so she *has* to do this, even though she doesn’t want to. It’s not weak, lame reasons, like some other stories might come up with, but hard-core reasons why she agrees, altruistic reasons. And what she says at the end of the episode. It’s almost like she’s throwing her hat in Min Woo’s ring, even though Seok Hoon seems to be the puppet master.
