Our episode starts right with the dramatic ending from the last episode: Pan Suk, with just a touch of a smile on his face, holds out the necklace to Ae Yun and puts it on the table. She visibly looks horrified to be seeing it. Pan Suk tells her she knows the pendant. She sets her face and looks at him defiantly and asks, “What if I do?” As Pan Suk tells her that she should know it because it’s hers, Dae Goo sits next to him trying to contain himself, his fist clenched. Pan Suk says the pendant was found in the house of the school nurse murdered in Masan 11 years ago. He asks Ae Yun to explain that. She laughs haughtily, like she can’t believe they’re bothering her with that, and asks them who’s saying that that pendant is hers.
Pan Suk chuckles with disbelief as Dae Goo rattles off the pendant’s pedigree: Henri Jeong's 2002 Limited Edition. Only-for-You Series. The Moon and the Northern Cross... It's a pendant made just for her. Is it not? Ae Yun laughs that same laugh again – which I’m finding means that she’s freaking out – and tells them that they are hilarious. Hilarious? Why would that be hilarious? Condescendingly, Ae Yun says that it was made for her, but *that* pendant isn’t hers. Pan Suk and Dae Goo look at each other like they can’t believe this woman. Pan Suk sighs and says that they checked with the designer, so she should be honest. Why did she go there that day and what happened?
Ae Yun plops a box on the coffee table and tells them to open it. It’s an exact replica of the pendant. As Pan Suk and Dae Goo are shocked, Ae Yun sits there smiling at them, with a look that calls them idiots and says ‘did you really think you could get me with that?’ Now what they need to do is that both of them back to the designer to ask which one *he* designed or if he designed both. He’d have a record of it. Cockily, she asks, “Enough?” She says that it’s their turn to explain where they picked up this fake. She should know who copied the work that she paid tens of thousands of dollars for. Um, don’t you already *know* who did it, since you are the one who had a copy made? Pan Suk replies that they don't know which one is real and which one is fake. Good man! He says that if she’s that confident, they should get them checked by the designer. Obnoxiously, cockily, she asks, “Why should I?” Pan Suk’s the one who's wondering.
Ae Yun rolls her eyes and dismissively waves her hand as she tells them to forget it. She says they may leave. Like they’re her servants rather than policemen. She snaps that last time it was a fake bag. This time, a fake pendant. It's quite obvious how they play! Now that makes no sense. They didn’t even know you when you beat the crap out of Mom, so how could they have arranged that? And since it’s an exclusive design, how would they know to make a copy of it? Pan Suk sighs with frustration.
Pan Suk and Dae Goo leave Ae Yun’s house, baffled. Pan Suk can’t believe it. There should only be one of those pendants in the world. Dae Goo takes another look at the pendant and notices something. The stones at the top and two of the letters on the pendant are different. One of the two must be fake.
Ae Yun is back in the house, nervously drumming her fingers, trying to get Moon Bae on the phone but he’s not answering. Ji Il (Father) enters and watches her frantically call and then mutter, “Chincha! Damn it!” as she throws down the phone. He enters the room and asks her what’s wrong. And instead of appreciating his concern… Ae Yun haughtily looks at him and asks him since when is he so concerned about her? Ji Il jaw clench as he leaves the room.
Back at the station, the team is getting caught up on the news. the pendant from the Masan School Nurse murder belongs to the Bag Lady (poetically spoken by Gook). Eung Do says that it’s even more fishy that she had a duplicate, since Henri Jeong said there's only one of that pendant in the world. Soo Sun declares that *this* is the pendant from 11 years ago for sure. Tae Il summizes that the one that the Bag Lady has must be fake. Dae Goo answers that it’s highly probable. If the Bag Lady dropped her pendant on the day of the murder, she could've gotten a fake one, as an alibi. Exactly. Now they just need to find the person that made the fake, or have Henri Jeong declare that *theirs* is the one he sold first.
Pan Suk declares that they’re not going to be able to really get any where until they can examine the pendants side-by-side so they’re going to have to change their approach and try to prove whether Ae Yun came to the house that day. They need to look for witnesses who saw her there along with any possible connections between Ae Yun and Oma. They need to focus on if Ae Yun had any clear motivation for murder. Eung Do says that just proving it’s Ae Yun’s pendant, it doesn’t prove that she's the killer if all it proves is that she was at the house. Tae Il suggests they try to find who made the fake. Pan Suk thinks that’s a great idea. Boy, the team’s being a little slow today.
Pan Suk declares that he and Dae Goo will go back down to Masan tomorrow to find any possible connection between the case and Ae Yun. Eung Do says that he’ll take Soo Sun and Gook and they’ll interview Oma’s college friends in Seoul. Tae Il will tackle finding the maker of the fake pendant. Although, I would think asking the designer (Henri Jeong) about it might go faster. He strikes me as the kind of person who would take offense to his work being copied. Pan Suk likes that idea. He picks up the pendant and declares that it took 11 years to find the pendant and then it appeared on its own. With Boots’ arrest, the whole investigation could've ended unsatisfyingly, but then it appeared. According to my legendary instincts, this means we can get to the bottom of this case. So they should work on this case with such conviction.
Soo Sun looks over at Dae Goo and he looks almost sick to his stomach. They return to their desks. Soo Sun awkwardly slides her chair over to his desk, to be met by the ruler. Aw, he’s taking everything she’s doing as a sign that she’s not interested. She slides back a bit. Dae Goo’s not looking at her, but busy working on his computer. She asks him if he’s okay. He’s cold as he responds with something akin to ‘whatever.’ She says that he must be exhausted; they all thought the case was closed. Not looking at her – a definite sign that he’s withdrawing – he asks her that if she knows that, then why is she asking? She replies that she really must be a birdbrain. She just couldn't connect it with Boots. He replies that he told her that she’s a birdbrain so many times already. She apologizes – almost like she’s apologizing for more than her ‘dumb’ question – and Dae Goo just tells her that it’s fine. She feels bad.
Soo Ae Yun is now sitting with Moon Bae. He’s surprised. How can the pendant that was lost 11 years ago appeared again? She snaps at him that he said he’ll take care of everything! How can he ask her that? He asks her what she did. She tells him that she showed them what she has. Moon Bae has no idea what she’s talking about. Smugly and proud of herself, she holds up the other pendant. She says that she had a fake one made. She figured someone would eventually show up asking about the real one. Moon Bae sputters that that pendant is the only one of its kind in the world. It was reckless of her to get a fake one! By getting a fake, she’s indirectly confessing the crime!
Ae Yun scoffs at that idea. They won't know hers is fake. She tells Moon Bae not to worry – every time so far she’s said that, they should be worrying. Ae Yun declares that her pendant is so accurate, even the maker won't know the difference. Ae Yun wants to know where “those bastards” found it. Moon Bae remembers Boots saying that he couldn't kill the kid 11 years ago and decides that they must have gotten it from Boots. Moon Bae sighs and says that he’ll take care of it, so Ae Yun shouldn’t do anything stupid and just wait. Ae Yun leaves the room. Moon Bae calls someone and tells them to find out what Boots is up to and report back to him.
Chief enters her office and finds an envelope, with no sender, on her desk. Inside, there’s a note with a picture of the pendant. It says, “I have the pendant that you hid that day. Come to Nodeul Island by 2 p.m. on July 3rd.”
I did a little investigating and finding info on Nodeul Island(Nodeulseom) was a little challenging. The official website of Seoul has nothing on it. I did find something on the Korea Tourism Organization website. I also found what looks like a case study published by a student on the island. It states that Nodeul Island(Nodeulseom) “an artificial island on the sand dune in the middle of a bridge in 1917, was built when Japanese colonial rulers established the Han River Bridge to connect south and north areas. As an eight-acre island made of white sand, it was called a sandy village(“Sa-jon”), and sunset from the island was considered as one of the eight famous views of Seoul.”
Chief gets the note. The picture has a date of 2014/07/01 on it, so she knows it’s current, and she’s freaking out. Particularly since she gave the pendant to Boots, so how can someone now have it, since Boots is in prison? There’s two people who could have possibly sent this: Moon Bae or Pan Suk. My money is on Pan Suk.
Pan Suk’s busy doing jewelry research at the kitchen table when Tae Il gets up in the morning. They greet each other, with Tae Il adding ‘sir’ to his greeting. Tae Il is understandably uncomfortable since they haven’t been alone since he explained how he knows Sa Kyung. Pan Suk declares that they should eat breakfast. He’s hungry! Pan Suk grabs the cereal. Pan Suk looks at it disdainfully and asks why they’re going to be eating bread crumbs for breakfast. Tae Il answer that they're multigrain cereal flakes. Pan Suk replies that it’s the same difference and asks if there’s real food. Tae Il pulls out fixings from the fridge.
Pan Suk’s phone rings. Tae Il glances at it. It’s Sa Kyung, with the name “Cutie.” He sadly waits for Pan Suk to answer the phone, but Pan Suk is too busy with his research, so he misses it. Tae Il inwardly groans. 'Why is she in love with this man?! She should be in love with me!' Even though he’s about 10 years younger than her. Tae Il sighs and tells Pan Suk that he needs Sa Kyung’s help looking for the maker of the fake pendant. It's okay for him to ask for her help, right? Oops. It seems that Pan Suk forgot there for a minute about their discussion. His questions reminds Pan Suk. Pan Suk adjusts his chin and forcefully flops down the magazine he’s perusing before telling Tae Il, “Sure.” Now Pan Suk’s frustrated with the papers he’s looking at. Tae Il flinches. And I chuckle.
Gook is up. As is Dae Goo. Pan Suk looks up and says, “Good morning, Eun Park Ji.” They’re confused. He explains: Eun Dae Goo, Park Tae Il, Ji Gook. Eun, Park, Ji. Brilliant, right? He laughs at his own brilliance. Gook laughs nervously, Tae Il uncomfortable chuckles and Dae Goo just looks at Pan Suk like he’s weird. Seeing Dae Goo’s face, Pan Suk stops laughing and mutters a quick ‘I'm sorry’ before announcing that he and Dae Goo will leave for Masan directly from the flat. If Toad looks for him, they need to cover. He wants them to try to keep this confidential for as long as possible.
Driving to Masan. Pan Suk asks Dae Goo about his life in Masan. He always lived with only his mom when he was in Masan, right? He’s never met his uncle? Dae Goo looks at Pan Suk a little surprised. It almost looks like he has no idea that he had an uncle. Pan Suk says that he may not know much about Eun Dae Goo, but he knows a lot about Kim Ji Yong. He did a lot of research trying to find Dae Goo.
Oma spent a year in Seoul as a nurse after college. She only came to Masan when she got the school nurse job. After she ended up pregnant with mystery father’s baby. I’m hoping Ji Il’s the dad, but we don’t know that. Pan Suk declares that Oma has a brother, who immigrated to Australia. Pan Suk asks if he’s wrong. Dae Goo doesn’t answer. Pan Suk asks about Dae Goo’s father. Dae Goo is short with his answers.
PS: He’s dead, right? DG: Yes.Pan Suk suggests they listen to some music but Dae Goo just closes his eyes to take a nap. Pan Suk agrees that Dae Goo should take a nap.
PS: When did he pass away? DG: Before I was born.
PS: So your mother was a single-mom? DG: Yes.
On the island, Pan Suk and Dae Goo start talking to people. Dae Goo stops and introduces himself to a woman. She’s excited to see him. He shows her Ae Yun’s picture. Ae Yun doesn’t look familiar. They interview lost of people. No one remembers Ae Yun.
Sa Kyung is at a jeweler’s. She takes off an expensive diamond bracelet and says that she needs a perfect copy. Would that be possible? After looking at it, jeweler declares that his skill set is not adequate for the job. On their way out, Sa Kyung gets a text from Pan Suk. He has to postpone their dinner since he’s not in Seoul and won’t be able to get back in time. Sa Kyung sighs. Tae Il asks her about it. She glares at him, tells him to stop reading other people's texts, and it’s none of his business. Way to shut the boy down! She's clearly upset as she tells him to hurry up, since she needs to get back to the station.
Soo Sun and Gook head to Big Tree Hospital – That’s literally what the English name of it is. Big Tree Hospital – where Oma’s best friend is now working. They ask to see Ms. Oh Ae Sun. Great. Those two names aren’t at all similar. The receptionist says that Ae Sun is on a business trip to Jeju.
Snack break for Pan Suk and Dae Goo. Old lady walks up. She’s the owner of the store, so Pan Suk gets out his money to pay for their frozen pops. Dae Goo recognizes her as Gyung Shik's halmeoni. She’s shocked (but happy). She calls Dae Goo Yong-a! He joyfully calls her Halmeoni. She quickly gets drinks and some watermelon for them. Halmeoni can’t believe it as she keeps clasping and patting Dae Goo’s hands. Is he really Ji Yong? And Dae Goo is wearing his Ji Yong smile.
Halmeoni declares that she thought he was dead! Heaven had mercy! She pounds him affectionately on the back. Ji Yong tells her that he’s just glad that she’s well. He asks how Pan Suk knows Yong-i. Is he Yong's father? Dae Goo is like ‘what?!” and Pan Suk loudly snaps at her, asking her why she would think that? She snaps at him that he startled her and there’s no need to be so loud! Pan Suk’s still indignant when he replies that people usually think he’s very young, ma'am! How can this grown-up dude be his son? It's time for halmeoni to get bifocals! Dae Goo tsks at Pan Suk and gives him a ‘Really? Very young?’ Halmeoni tells Pan Suk that he’s too loud.
Halmeoni gently tells Ji Yong that she was worried to death when he disappeared. She felt like it was her fault that it happened to him. If only she had gone to the police station to testify! Ji Yong asks what she’s talking about. Did she see something that day? Halmeoni says that she was to on her way to his house because she wanted to give some kimchi to Oma. There was this young man peeking into the house from behind the walls. She got scared so she just turned around and went home. She had no idea something horrendous like that would happen!
Halmeoni apologizes to Ji Yong and mentions because Oma got killed because Oma wanted to say the right things, she was too scared to say what she saw. Pan Suk thinks and pulls out a picture of Boots (Hyung Chul). It’s not the guy she saw. It wasn’t C.G. either. But it was Woo Joon Soo (the guy that Pan Suk bought the meat from). She remembers because of his slanted eyes. Pan Suk is too excited to stay, so Dae Goo has to give a quick farewell. Dae Goo asks how Pan Suk knows where Joon Soo is and Pan Suk replies that there’s a reason why people call him a legend!
Driving back from Masan. Tae Il sends Pan Suk a text, thanking him for cancelling the dinner with Sa Kyung. Thanks to him, he got a chance to buy Detective Kim dinner tonight. No! He is so wrong! Ha! Pan Suk is checking this at a stopped light, of course. Wouldn’t’ want them to promote texting and driving! Pan Suk mutters that Tae Il is a punk and doing that intentionally! Dae Goo gets a text from Soo Sun. And we get to see that KakaoTalk logo again, because they can’t just use regular texting. She asks him if he’s gotten anything, since Gook and she weren’t so successful. And she’s having dinner with Gook right now. Ah! Jealousy for both boys!
Soo Sun texts that Gook is working hard on a crab. He holds it up and declares that this is a rice thief so she should arrest the crab (by eating it). Uncomfortable but faking it, Soo Sun tells Gook to eat it, but he insists on feeding her. She text her pah-te-nuh not to skip dinner. Dae Goo mutters, “Ah, crap.” Pan Suk asks what’s wrong. Dae Goo says that it’s nothing. Both he and Pan Suk stew about their women eating with their rivals. Dae Goo turns to Pan Suk and asks why women can’t just eat alone? Pan Suk replies that it's not just a problem with women. It’s also a problem with men who lack the spirit of fair play. They go at it at every chance they get, no matter if the goalkeeper is there or not! Goalkeeper? World Cup. Dae Goo replies that he can't agree more.
Dae Goo points out the green light and tells Pan Suk to step on the gas. Pan Suk calls Dae Goo a rabbit as he asks if Dae Goo has his seat belt on. When Dae Goo mentions the rabbit, Pan Suk waves it off, but declares a confused rabbit indeed and cackles. They head to Joon Soo’s and show him the pendant, saying that it was in the front yard of the house. Has Joon Soo ever seen it? Joon Soo hasn’t and why would his boss drop it, since it obviously belongs to a woman. Pan Suk asks if he’s ever see Ae Yun. Joon Soo has, although he’s not answering. His face says he has as he keeps glancing at the picture and Pan Suk. Joon Soo decides to lie and says he hasn’t. There's no way she’s seen her.
Pan Suk declares that Joon Soo was in front of the house that day. They have a witness who saw Joon Soo there! Joon Soo looks at the picture again – since he knows who she is. Dae Goo tells Joon Soo that he’s begging; please tell them what Joon Soo saw. As Joon Soo considers, Pan Suk tells him that it’s not too late to tell them what he saw. Since there’s a witness, there's no point in lying anymore. And once Joon Soo tells them, Pan Suk promises that he won't bug him anymore! Joon Soo admits that he thinks he saw her coming out of the house that day. He’s definite; he remembers because she was very flamboyant. Pan Suk tells Joon Soo that he did great work! Joon Soo is still freaking out.
Outside the café, Dae Goo is trying to get a handle on how he feels. Pan Suk approaches and tells him that he wasn't expecting to actually find witnesses from 11 years ago! Dae Goo reluctantly tells Pan Suk that it was nicely done… All thanks to him. And I laugh. He has to admit that Pan Suk did well. Pan Suk puts his arm around Dae Goo and says they should go. Dae Goo is really uncomfortable, so he squirms out of the bro-hug and walks back to the car. Pan Suk mutters to himself, annoyed, and follows.
Pan Suk calls Eung Do, who declares that Heaven has helped them! The team is excited and amazed! Now they just need to keep it from Chief, who just happens to walk by right at that moment. The gang clams up and bows respectfully at her. She’s preoccupied. Eung Do thinks about the conversation he had with Pan Suk. Eung Do doesn’t want to believe that Chief Kang is "Detective Seo," who hid the pendant and put Ji Yong in danger. Neither of them do. Pan Suk says that he really hopes that he’s wrong, but if she purposely destroyed the note she got from Joong Tak, it also highly probable that she took the pendant too.
Eung Do thinks it’s possible that Chief just forgot to give Pan Suk the note. Plus, the Chief's last name is Kang. How could she be called "Detective Seo?" Dae Goo could have misheard… Pan Suk says that this is why he’s going to check. They’ll find out in a couple of days. So Pan Suk did send the note to Chief.
Precinct. Soo Sun is sitting at her desk, deep in thought. Dae Goo enters and it’s now obvious that she was waiting for him. She pretends to be working at her computer. Dae Goo walks up, nodding at her, but not saying anything. She starts to tell him congratulations and she’s so glad, but Dae Goo just walks away into the conference room. Ouch. Major burn. After a moment she follows him.
Dae Goo pulls out his bag from his locker. He doesn’t say anything when she enters. He just starts packing up some folders. She asks him if he’s mad at her. He just answers, “yes,” without looking at her. She asks why and he replies, “Why do you think?” She asks if it’s because of the pendant. He looks at her like she’s really a birdbrain and calls her that. She asks him why he’s mad. He pauses a moment and – more angrily than he probably meant to sound – he asks why he isn’t her type. I am laughing. She blinks several times. He repeats the question: Why is he not her type? Who's her type then? Soo Sun swallows. Did she really kiss him only for business?
Soo Sun blinks and stumbles, “You really...” Dae Goo’s not taking that. She sputters, asking if that’s that important to him, since he just found the pendant after 11 years. Adamantly, Dae Goo declares that yes, it's that important to him. Because she said he’s not her type, he feels like his life has become meaningless. Aw! Wow. She’s replaced finding Oma’s killer! She can only blink and squirm. She turns to hurry out, but he grabs her and turns her towards him. She slips, so she ends up in his arms. They look at each other.
Soo Sun tries to stand up, but Dae Goo holds her in place and asks her who it is… her type. He won’t stop looking at her, even though she’s blinking up a storm. Finally she says her type is… his friend, Kim Ji Yong. He lets her stand up. They look at each other for a moment and then Soo Sun runs. Dae Goo can’t believe she just said that and he smiles.
Moon Bae is stewing at home, muttering Boots’s name. How dare Boots stab him in the back like this? His assistant, Slimy Lawyer, enters to report the visitors that Boots has gotten. Hearing how Boots won’t meet with Pan Suk or Dae Goo, Moon Bae dismisses Slimy. He thinks about that conversation with Chief, where she said she wasn’t the same Kang Seok Soon as before. He mutters that Chief has no idea that the pendant has resurfaced or what her subordinates are up to, and she still dared to threaten him. The plot thickening music plays. Moon Bae calls someone and says to proceed as planned.
Chief is looking at the anonymous message again. She’s stressed. Toad bursts in and she quickly hides them and scolds him for not knocking. He apologizes and goes out to knock and come in again. It was so dorky, I had to make a note of it. Toad says that he’s there because he’s overjoyed! The thing that they’ve all been waiting for, for the issue of dividing investigative rights between the Prosecutor's Office and the police force, it’s going to be discussed again in the National Assembly. Moon Bae finally made his move! Chief can’t believe it. She says that it must happen. Toad is practically spastic as he declares that they are getting closer to the dream! Should he start praying?! Chief looks at her watch and winces.
Pan Suk arrives at Nodeul Island. It’s 1:57 pm. 2:00 pm passes. 2:10… 2:15… And then he sees Chief walking. He’s disappointed. Chief’s looking for whoever sent her the note. Pan Suk says “Detective Seo.” Dramatic music plays as they look at each other. Pan Suk looks like he’s going to cry as she asks her if it’s her. She the one who hid the pendant that night, 11 years ago, and told Boots Ji Yong’s whereabouts in the school? She looks sick and he is pissed. Then she volunteered to support Ji Yong after what she did to him?! Pan Suk is practically screaming at her. How could you be... He stops, overcome with disappointment. Tears are in his eyes now as he finishes his question. Detective Seo? Chief’s eyes are red, too.
Flashback. A very *young* Chief stands in the Ulsan District Prosecutor's Office, 27 years ago. She’s there with her female partner. She angrily says that this is the fifth time that her arrest request has been denied. Why is he saying no? Without looking up, the prosecutor says they need to bring him sound evidence. They’re nice enough to identify the two women. One the left is Seo Kyung Eun and the right is Kang Suk Soon. Seo Kyung Eun protests that the girl was only nineteen and she was ruthlessly raped by four men. The prosecutor still isn’t looking at them as he asks what an under-aged girl was doing at a nightclub to begin with? She also walked into a motel on her own. How can that be rape? Chief can’t believe this guy. She asks him if he didn’t see the bruises on her body. It was a rape induced by drugs and coercion! The veins and muscles in her neck are bulging, she’s so mad.
Prosecutor snarks that if Chief’s so smart, she should've studied harder and become a prosecutor! Kyung Eun asks Prosecutor how much they paid him. Who paid him and how much? Prosecutor’s ‘insulted’ and Chief can’t believe her partner’s brashness. Kyung Eun isn’t looking away but glaring at Prosecutor. She says that the son of a judge, the grandson of an assemblyman, the son of a CEO... She’s sure the rapists' parents paid him well to save their sons... He slaps her to shut her up and asks how she dares to paint him as a corrupt prosecutor! Did she see him getting the money or something?! He grabs Kyung Eun to get even more physical, but Chief cuts in. Prosecutor slaps Chief and tells her to get out of the way! Both women are now staring at Prosecutor in disbelief.
Prosecutor points at Kyung Eun and declares that he’ll show her what happens when a lowly cop challenges the authority of the Prosecutor's Office. He takes off his watch to get down to showing them. We don’t see it. Next thing we see is a newspaper and someone asks, “What were you thinking?” Kyung Eun and Chief are getting dressed down because they sued Prosecutor for assault. Now the Prosecutor's Office is out to get the police! They might all get fired!
They’re at the Busan District Police Station. A much younger Moon Bae pipes up that there was an assault. They have the right to sue. Big boss snarks, asking Moon Bae if he wants them to do whatever they want even ifthe police organization is about to be destroyed? Moon Bae doesn’t answer. Boss slaps his chair and asks Moon Bae if he wants Boss to fire all of his subordinates for him? And this is ridiculous. An abuse of power, for sure! Boss tells Moon Bae to cancel the lawsuit. Stop it before it gets any bigger.
Later, the pair are back in plain clothes. Moon Bae tells them to cancel the lawsuit. They can’t believe it. Moon Bae declares that there's no other way out. If the incident gets any bigger, it might endanger everyone at their police station. Kyung Eun wants to know, what about the victim? The rape victim will not get her justice. She was reluctant and they promised that they would bring her rapists to justice! Now Moon Bae wants them to give up? Kyung Eun tells Chief to say something, but she doesn’t.
Moon Bae’s in with Prosecutor, holding the papers for the cancellation of lawsuit. Prosecutor gushes that he can’t thank Moon Bae enough and offers him some tea. Moon Bae smiles. `Maybe that's when he sold his soul.
Kyung Eun finds Chief later and asks what she did. She didn't cancel the lawsuit, did she? Chief can’t meet her eyes. Kyung Eun can’t believe it. They agreed to go all the way with this! They made a promise to protect her at all cost! Later, they’re meeting with the rape victim’s mother, who pounds on Kyung Eun, saying that they shouldn't have started it. The victim didn't want to remember anything from that night, and they forced her to repeat it over and over again... Mother collapses to the ground, weeping for her poor daughter. Kyung Eun weeps and apologizes over and over. Mother begs them to go get the arrest warrant. Kyung Eun’s a cop! Later, Kyung Eun puts in her resignation. And then she throws herself off the roof of the police station, wearing her dress blues. When Chief seeks Kyung Eun’s body, she sags to the ground and weeps.
Graveyard. Seo Kyung Eun’s grave reads 1964.2.15 ~ 1987.6.20, Seo Kyung Eun, Here uncompromised justice rests. Moon Bae and Chief are there, saluting. A grieving Chief asks Moon Bae why the police don't we have investigative rights. Moon Bae sighs. They deal with criminals every day, yet they can't arrest them without prosecutor approval. Why do they lose every time they stand up against prosecutors? He sighs again. Chief turns to him and begs him to get powerful so they can protect defenseless victims by winning the police their own investigative rights. Moon Bae looks emotional. Chief says that she believes that he’ll be able to do it and she will be able to do everything to help him. Barely able to speak because of her grief, Chief clutches Kyung Eun’s name tag and tells Moon Bae to please call her Detective Seo from now on, so she will never forget this disgrace and her guilt for what happened to Kyung Eun.
Back to the present. Chief declares that since that day, there has been only one goal in her life: securing investigative rights for the police. Pan Suk understands that that Chief of hers... is Yoo Moon Bae. Chief looks at him and says that all she knows now is that her dream of the last 27 years is about to be achieved. Soon, the National Assembly will start discussing the issue of investigative rights. She tells Pan Suk that once that goes well, she will come clean and reveal everything about this case. And Pan Suk says what I’m thinking… What if it doesn't go well? This is how she’s spent that last 11 years? She replies that her 11 years of patience is about to turn into ashes! Pan Suk stares at her. This is not the same woman that he knew.
Chief declares that it’s not like Pan Suk has any solid evidence. She tells him that he won’t gain anything, even if he puts her in jail based on what she just said. She’ll invoke her right to remain silent. Then he’ll really have no evidence. Pan Suk laughs in disbelief and asks if this is her true self. She looks at him and demands to know where the pendant is.
Back at the station, Dae Goo and Tae Il are talking, when Dae Goo spots Ki Jae, trying to do a selfie with the receptionist. Ki Jae spots Chung Chun Men (awesome dude, Dae Goo) and greets him. Dae Goo tells Tae Il to go ahead. As Tae Il leaves, Ki Jae salutes him. He keeps calling Dae Goo Chung Chun Men. Dae Goo asks why Ki Jae’s there. Ki Jae was just in the neighborhood. He asks if Dae Goo wants to go get lunch. Dae Goo asks why he should eat lunch with Ki Jae. Ki Jae asks if Dae Goo doesn’t like him because he’s Ae Yun’s son. Dae Goo doesn’t answer but squirms a little. Ki Jae looks at himself in the reflection off his phone and mutters that he really doesn’t look like her. Dae Goo sighs. Ki Jae repeats his request with a whine. He doesn't like eating alone. Dae Goo tells Ki Jae to leave. He doesn’t have the time nor the energy to entertain Ki Jae.
Dae Goo tries to leave but Ki Jae blocks him. Ki Jae tells Dae Goo that he should be nice, since Ki Jae helped him out by telling him about the vacation home. The least Dae Goo could do is buy him lunch! Dae Goo just looks at him. Ki Jae asks what Dae Goo’s face means. Did Dae Goo think he was tricked into revealing that place? Ki Jae says that he told Dae Goo to prevent Ae Yun from causing bigger trouble. Dae Goo just looks at him. Ki Jae mutters that he thought that Dae Goo was different, but he’s the same as everyone else! He waves his hand, dismissing Dae Goo and declares that this is boring so he’s leaving. Dae Goo calls after him but Ki Jae tells him that he’s not an awesome dude anymore! He gives Dae Goo a thumbs down and says that he’s not awesome at all. Dae Goo laughs in disbelief. This whole family is crazy.
Dae Goo and Tae Il are trying to find out who duplicated the pendant. All the experts are saying that they can’t do it. It didn’t look that intricate! Tae Il suggests they look into foreign experts, too. Since Henry Jeung does most of his work in France, maybe a French craftsman will be able to copy it. Dae Goo realizes that he left his cell phone behind. He runs back to get the phone.
As Dae Goo leaves, two thugs get out of a car and jump Tae Il. They’re beating the crap out of Tae Il to get the pendant. Thug1 gets it, so they walk off, thinking the beating they gave Tae Il was enough. But Tae Il gets up and slugs Thug1 to get the pendant back. Thug2 puts his hand over Tae Il’s mouth and Thug1 stabs him in the gut twice. Tae Il still tries to get the pendant, but he’s too badly hurt. Tae Il still weakly reaches for them as they run and get in their car. They drive off.
Dae Goo comes back to parking lot to find a barely conscious Tae Il. No! Tae Il can’t DIE!!! I am starting to freak out now. Dae Goo asks who did this but all Tae Il will say is “Pendant… Your Pendant…” Dae Goo takes off his shirt and stuffs it on Tae Il’s wound and starts yelling for someone to call 911!
Tae Il’s still alive when they get to the hospital. They rush him off to surgery. All Dae Goo can do is wait, with his head in his hands. The rest of the team arrives. They ask if Tae Il is okay. Dae Goo doesn’t say anything. Soo Sun asks if he’s okay and he mutters a “yes.” Pan Suk asks why Tae Il was stabbed. Dae Goo says it was because of the pendant. The men who attacked him took the pendant. Arg!!! They were so close! Gook’s really worried about his partner. So is everyone else. Dae Goo declares that this was probably done by Ae Yun. He decides to go speak to her.
Soo Sun runs after Dae Goo and stops him in the parking lot. She tells him that he can’t go. He tells her to out of his way. He can't let Ae Yun get away with this. She continues to hold onto him and tells him that he can't go! It's not like it'll be resolved right now. Dae Goo yells, asking when it will be resolved. He wrenches his arms free. Should he just endure it like an idiot? Tae Il got stabbed because of him. If anything, it should've been him!
Dae Goo tells her to get out of his way. Soo Sun grabs him in a bear hug, holding onto him, telling him he can’t go. Dae Goo’s really trying not to cry. He struggles, but she won’t let go. She tells him that it’s not because of him. No matter who it was, no matter what the evidence was, Tae Il would've done the same thing because he’s a detective. That's their job. She tells him to hold his anger in, until they can bring Ae Yun to justice. She hugs him more tightly and he really tries not to cry. He just accepts the hug, closing his eyes and starting to cry.
Car out by the Han River. Guy walks up and gives the pendant to Ae Yun. Flashback to 11 years ago. Oma asks if the person coming in is Yong, but it’s Ae Yun, wearing the pendant. Ae Yun just pushes Oma aside and enters. Oma turns her back on Ae Yun. Ae Yun clubs Oma over the head with the vase. Ae Yun realizes what she’s done. In her haste, because of the rain, she doesn’t realize she lost her pendant. And what kind of idiot wears a one-of-a-kind pendant to go confront someone? Back in the present, Ae Yun smiles.
Thoughts
Holy crap! Tae Il got stabbed! He could actually die, although I really hope not. That would be too depressing. Not that ‘City Hunter’ didn’t do it, but here there wasn’t any type of scene beforehand where characters say stuff so that it will be extra tragic when the character dies. I’m hoping that this means that Tae Il will make it through surgery.
And this presents an interesting dilemma. Ae Yun had a policeman potentially murdered, to cover up her misdeeds. They could get a warrant and search the house for the pendant, even though she’d just argue that it was the one she had all along. But when they get all the other stuff together, that’s not going to hold water. Hopefully.
Other developments:
- Yay, Soo Sun told Dae Goo that he was her type, even if she did it by telling him that her type was his friend, Kim Ji Yong. The last part with her holding him as he cries, that was really touching. I’m so sad that the end is near, because I love these characters so much. I think it’s why I’ve been procrastinating in watching the episodes, so I can drag it out a little longer.
- We get an explanation of why the ‘honorable’ Chief has sold her soul to the devil, as well as who Detective Seo is/was. I don’t think that Moon Bae was necessary corrupt in the beginning, but he was corruptible, as evidenced by his smile when the corrupt Prosecutor thanked him for getting those charges dropped.
- Seeing Pan Suk’s disappointment and heart break over Chief’s corruption was hard. It’s going to be worse when Dae Goo finds out. Much worse.
- Yay! That they have a witness who puts Ae Yun at the scene of the murder. (And we got to see it happen - sad face.) Even without the pendant, they have a photo of it from a few days ago, so the defense can't argue that it's not from the pendant they had in custody. Hopefully, when they recover the pendant, it will have some of Tae Il's DNA on it, so they can definitively prove that he had it.
- Ae Yun, again, didn't do what Moon Bae told her to do, which is leave it to him, and that's what's going to sink them. I bet that her trip to see Oma was another situation where Moon Bae told her not to do anything, but she did because she knows better. I really felt like slapping content little smile off her face at the end. But keep thinking you've got it all sown up. I want you off guard so that when it hits, it feels just like that knife plunging into Tae Il's gut. (Was that too vicious?)
- I wonder how Ki Jae's going to play into all this. They wouldn't have him pop up again, if he wasn't about to play into things, even though Ki Jae doesn't think Dae Goo is quite the Chung Chun Men that he used to.
- Also interesting that Ki Jae consistently makes comments about how Ae Yun makes trouble and causes problems. How much has she abused the system because Daddy cleans up the mess?
- Pan Suk mentioned Dae Goo's uncle who emigrated to Australia. I wonder if Dae Goo has contacted him?
- I am still betting that that year Oma spent in Seoul as a nurse after college was the year she met Ji Il and got pregnant. And Moon Bae wanted her to have an abortion, but Oma ran instead. Probably next episode, Ae Sun will be back from her business trip to Jeju Island and we'll get the whole story.
- Moon Bae called someone and told them to go ahead. I'm wondering if that means that Boots is going to get shiv'd in prison. Fingers crossed that Boots doesn't die so that he can rat out Moon Bae and Ae Yun.
- Heh to Dae Goo rejecting Pan Suk's bro-hug.
- Aw to Soo Sun replacing Oma as Dae Goo's meaning in life. Too sweet. Ji Yong always was really good with being in touch with his emotions. And does Soo Sun saying that Ji Yong is her type, does that mean that I was right about him being Soo Sun's first love? I'd love to find out the answer to *that* question.
- The issue with investigative rights. That is really screwed up and susceptible to corruption. I'm wondering how different the U.S. is... From all those episodes of 'Law and Order,' I think the police have to have an arrest warrant typically, although they can arrest someone without a warrant if they have probably cause to do so, which is different from how it seems to be playing out in Korea. Which really would suck. I mean, the fact that the Prosecutor could smack two female cops around and not have to face any consequences... Completely wrong.
Really hating Birkin Witch right about now. Can't wait for justice!
