She Was Pretty Episode 11 Recap

Starts with Sung Joon finishing his meeting. He asks where she is. She says that she had to work, but she’ll make sure to be where they planned to meet on time. He hangs up and looks to the sign on his left. It’s a photo of Ha Ri, labeled with her name, calling her Best Hotelier for Ara Hotel. Arg! Shouldn’t have hesitated. Sung Joon’s face looks like he wants to throw up.

And he comes across her outside. Min Ha Ri. Who are you? His face looks terrible! Incredulous at the deception. Why? How the heck could she have been Kim Hye Jin? She can’t say anything. What has she been doing this whole time? Who is she? What the heck is her true identity? His face looks like he’s about to lose it and start yelling. And he’s scary when he yells. She says that she’ll explain everything, Sung Joon. She reaches forward to take his arm, starting to explain, but he pulls it free. She can’t do anything but look at his arm.

He demands that she answer him. Who is she? Ha Ri softly says that she’s a friend. Hye Jin's friend. This sinks in as Ha Ri talks. Hye Jin asked her a favor. She needed to meet with him only once. But after Ha Ri bumped into him again at the hotel, things became complicated. Her voice starts to shake as she says that she was going to meet with him today to explain everything and apologize.

Sung Joon’s eyes are glistening. Then is the real Kim Hye Jin... Is it her? The person who he thinks it is? Both of them look like they’re going to cry. She tells him that he’s right. She apologizes for deceiving him. She wasn't planning on dragging this out for so long– He says nothing and just walks away. Ha Ri starts to sob. And I feel bad for her. She could have lied, tried to lie, but she did what she decided to do.

Sung Joon drives in his car. As he thinks about all the clues he ignored – her naturally vicious curls, she’s Kim Hye Jin! It's a go! – he starts to cry.

♫ Saying I want to see you fills my heart ♫

He thinks of her saving him in the rain (both times).

♫ but I can't say anything. ♫
♫ After walking far behind your heart ♫
♫ Rather than my own  ♫

She has the umbrella.

♫ I still don't know. You don't know. ♫
♫ Always... ♫

She laughs about how he was taking out the peas and when she asks, she said that she was just thinking about somebody.

More tears as he remembers young Hye Jin saying that the peeping girl makes it look a picture puzzle. If you don't look carefully, you can't even tell she's there, like a hidden picture game.

♫ Sometime even if you laugh at me, it's okay. ♫

Switch to Shin Hyuk’s confession. He’s using his last request today. His hug. He tells her that if she’s going to hesitate like that and can't even go to Sung Joon, just come to him. Oh! He’s ripping my guts out. The slip of pleading in his voice. He lets go, smiles and tells her to give him a chance too, hm? I will! Me! Over here! Hye Jin starts to say that their relationship isn’t like that – even though it totally is! – when her phone rings. Shin Hyuk tells her to take it.

She answers that call from Sung Joon. He says, hurting, that it’s been a long time, Kim Hye Jin-shi. She's confused since they just met earlier at the art gallery. Starting to sob, he repeats that it's been a while, Hye Jin-a. That gets me a little. Pause. He says, sobbing that he missed her, Kim Hye Jin. Tears well up in her eyes as she calls him Sung Joon-a. Shin Hyuk tries not to look like he just got punched in the gut. Sung Joon asks where she is. He wants to meet.

Shin Hyuk tries to play off his heart breaking, lightly tell her not to go. Don't go, Jackson. She looks at Shin Hyuk and apologies and then runs off.

♫  The place from where I used to look at you, I'm here. ♫

Shin Hyuk nods and can’t smile away his broken heart. Wow, I’m crying now.

Sung Joon is walking. He looks a little desperate. He asks where she is and she’s out in front of the company. She starts to cross the street and Sung Joon catches her. They look at each other – while standing in the middle of the street. He starts to cry as he says that he found her. She laughs and tries not to cry. He says that he finally found her, Kim Hye Jin. The tears are welling in his eyes. Hye Jin starts to cry, even as she smiles. In a voice that says that she was so stupid – he asks why on earth she hid. Tears are running down his face now as he asks why she didn't say anything? Does she know how much he–?

He stops himself and nods, saying Nevermind, Hye Jin. He recognized her far too late. He should've found her earlier, but he was late. And a jerk in between. He sobs his apology and says that she must've have a hard time by herself. She shakes her head – which is totally not true – and smiles at him. He says that she was so close to him this whole time. How could he not have recognized her, like an idiot?

He reaches forward and puts his hands around her face and looks at her. Even if he looks at her this way, it's her. And even if he looks at her this way, it's her, too. It's her. His friend, Kim Hye Jin. She laughs and smiles. They stand in the median in the middle of the street.

♫  Beside me you, not some other person,  ♫
♫  are always watching.  ♫

The young them take each others hand and finish crossing the street.

♫ The way you talk and look are not unfamiliar.  ♫

They walk and talk.

♫  You are the person I've been waiting for  ♫

She says that, that day, she did go out to meet you.

♫ You are the person I've been waiting for  ♫

But? When he didn't recognize her and just walked by, she suddenly felt as small as a finger nail. It was when she was jobless, and she also felt as though she had become so different from the image of Kim Hye Jin he remembered, so she lost the confidence to face him.

They smile at each other as he reaches up and pushes some hair away from her face.

Sung Joon says that looking back, everything began with his mistake. If only he hadn't done that then...

They hold hands.

Hye Jin asks what he’s saying. It's her fault for getting scared and hiding.

♫ It seems I don't know anything else except to love you ♫
♫ Your voice calling me (my voice calling you)
♫ It seems you love me too ♫

As they enjoy being together by the river, Sung Joon’s VO says that he didn't know anything then. He wonders what she must've felt, knowing everything while seeing him. Hye Jin’s VO says that the lie continued to grow like a snowball, rolling and rolling, until a moment in time when it became too big for her to handle. That's why it became harder for her to reveal it as time went on.

Sung Joon turns to her and says that, now that he thinks about it, he’s beginning to feel a bit sad. If his situation had become worse than before, then would she have been disappointed in him and regretted meeting him? We know that’s a no, considering how she greeted a guy who could have been him. He thought that that sort of thing wouldn't be important particularly between them. Is he the only one who thinks that way? She shakes her head and smiles.

He puts his hands on her shoulders and says that no matter how different her circumstances were, or how she would look when she appeared in front of him, it wouldn't have mattered to him at all. Ever. Which we all knew. She says that at that time... if she hadn't hidden herself like that, it would have been so much... so much better. She’s regretting it. He tells her that they shouldn’t regret it and shouldn’t look back either. From now on, they should only look at the present, Hye Jin. She nods her head in agreement.

Then she adds that he must have already heard all of these things from Ha Ri. He says that he’s hearing it for the first time from him. While coming there, he just assumed why some of these things must have happened. She’s confused. Didn't he come there after hearing everything from Ha Ri?

Hye Jin hurries home. Ha Ri asks why she’s home already? Didn't she meet Ji Sung Joon? Hye Jin asks what happened. Is Ha Ri okay? She heard Ha Ri couldn't say anything. She heard Ha Ri didn't even have a chance to explain. Ha Ri smiles and says that she... thinks she lost her head for a while. She should have told Hye Jin everything sooner. She apologizes..

Hye Jin replies that Ha Ri told her that she was going to tell him the truth and put everything back to the way it was. Ha Ri told her to wait a just little bit... Ha Ri nods and says that Sung Joon was going to find out today anyway. It just happened an hour early, that's all. She says that an oppa she knows is waiting for her nearby. She should go. She’ll be home late so Hye Jin shouldn't wait up. Ha Ri leaves, ignoring Hye Jin calling after her.

In Ha Ri’s room, her phone rings. Hye Jin answers the phone. An oppa wants Hye Jin to tell Ha Ri to pick up his calls. Hye Jin looks down and sees the letter to Sung Joon, ripped up and in the trash. She pieces it back together and reads it:

From where and how should I explain? I didn't think I could tell you everything in person so I'm writing you a letter instead. First, I'm sorry, Sung Joon. Really... there's nothing else I can say besides I'm sorry.

Hye Jin sighs and runs out to try and find Ha Ri.

Strangely, whenever I was having a hard time, I kept bumping into you. Each time, I was comforted by your words and your actions. I even thought for a second that you and I were very much alike. Even though everything you said you only said because you thought I was Hye Jin. I was mistaken like an idiot. So for a while, I was bad and got greedy. Thank you for everything... And I'm really sorry.

Hye Jin finally finds Ha Ri, who is sitting there, sobbing.

Just saying it will never be enough but I'm sorry. All that time when you thought I was Hye Jin and even now, I knew very well that the Kim Hye Jin that you like... that Hye Jin's the only one. I'm so sorry for uselessly cutting in and making you take the longer route. I will sincerely, really sincerely, be rooting for you and Hye Jin.

Hye Jin's friend, Ha Ri.

Hye Jin cries for her hurting friend but doesn’t get her attention.

The next morning, Hye Jin checks on Ha Ri, but she’s not in her room. Hye Jin starts to get concerned, but Ha Ri appears, coming back from exercising. Hye Jin asks when Ha Ri got up to do that. Ha Ri lies and says that that oppa last night bought her so much to drink and she felt awful. She’s never seen an oppa who can drink that well. She continues to act like nothing is wrong and tries to go into her room. Hye Jin points out that she’s heading for her room and Ha Ri acts like she has no idea where her head is at.

Sung Joon is getting ready for work. He spritzes some cologne in the air and lets it settle on him. He practices saying hello to Hye Jin. He smiles at his onion.

Shin Hyuk is depressed and in bed, staring at the ceiling. He lets out a groan of frustration, but doesn’t get up. My poor Shin Hyuk-i!

Hye Jin and Sung Joon run into each other on the street. She sees him first. He’s reading his tablet. She tells him good morning and that he shouldn't look at those things on the street, Deputy Chief Editor! That's why he keeps bumping into this and that! Like a fool. He smiles and says he understands. He puts the tablet away. Smiling at each other.

The light changes and he calls out her “It's a go!” He reaches out to grab her hand but she starts waving her arms around, complaining about sleeping wrong. I can’t tell if that was avoiding the hand holding or legitimate. She walks forward. He hurries after her and says they should have dinner together later. Oh! Should they go visit their old neighborhood? Is that cake shop still there? On the Left Handers' Day, Hye Jin even bought him a cake from that place, thinking it was his birthday. She remembers, right? I hope he doesn’t do that for very long, try to build their connection by grasping on to the past.

She chuckles awkwardly and asks if something like that happened? Her memory isn't that amazing so her old memories are a bit fuzzy. She walks forward and he looks a little unsettled.

They ride up the elevator. Sung Joon looks a little miserable. She asks what she should call him now? Deputy Chief Editor, Friend? Mr. Classmate? Deputy Chief Editor classmate... will be too strange. Doesn't he have any ideas? He looks at her like he can’t believe that she’s being like this. He says her name. She asks exactly what kind of life did he have in America for him to become a totally different person? She gives him a hip nudge. Hey, Ji Sung Joon! He became so cool! He looks at her, hurt, like he can’t believe she’s acting like he’s just some old friend she reconnected with.

She says that Sung Joon mentioned finding her email through the classmates' page. Now that she’s met him, she’s curious about all the others too. Should they have a class reunion with everyone? The Most floor. She starts to leave, but he grabs her arm and tells her to stay put. They head up to the 20th floor and the roof. Once there, he asks why she’s acting like this. She acts like she doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He replies that she’s acting like a different person overnight. She says that while they’re at work, she thought they should keep professional and personal lives separate. It's a little... you know. Letting people know they’re classmates...

He repeats her words: Professional... and personal? Classmates? She squirms a little. Does she think that they are only just classmates? She brightly says that it’s true! They’re classmates. What is she doing? Sung Joon is trying not to be hurt, but it’s hard. He says that just a day before, she definitely came to him but they’re just classmates? Why is she being this way all of a sudden? Hye Jin thinks that Ha Ri... likes him.

Like it’s no big deal, she says if he is, by any chance, you talking about first love or whatnot over something that happened when he was little? He’s not, right? It's so old-fashioned. He sighs and tries not to burst out into tears. He says that she has a way of making him feel empty. All this time, because of her, how much... Her smile cracks. He asks why she’s doing this all of a sudden? He can't understand why she’s being this way. What's the reason?

She tells him he's being too serious. He replies that he must have been alone in thinking that they were special. Getting to meet each other after all this time, he must be the only one who felt sad and didn't want to waste anymore time. To her, he’s just one of her many classmates. Her façade is starting to crack. He says that he’s asking again. Is there really nothing? What's the reason she’s suddenly being this way?

She thinks: Ha Ri... likes him... a lot. She doesn’t say anything. Sung Joon nods and says that he got it. He walks away. After he’s gone, she sighs loudly.

She runs into Shin Hyuk in the hall. She start to mention what happened before but he, looking over her head, says that there's no reason he didn't get home safely. He tries to walk by but she steps in front of him. She holds out an envelope to him and asks that he take it. He looks inside to find 50,000 RKW. He says that he’s unsure about how to decipher this Shin Saimdang. She says that he hurt your arm... because of her. It's for his hospital bill.

He laughs, partially because it’s really sweet, partially because it makes him like her more, partially because it’s really annoying that she doesn’t like him and is totally clueless to how much he likes her. he sighs loudly and tells her not to bother. He chuckles and walks away. She calls after him but he ignores her. Poong Ho encounters him and asks why the sour face? Something going on? Acting like the same old Shin Hyuk, Shin Hyuk says that it’s just because. Because nothing's fun. He says that after the interview, he’s leaving the office for the day. He walks away.

Poong Ho wonders what’s going on. The two of them used to go around stuck together. What happened all of a sudden? Something smells fishy. He goes over and asks if there’s something special between her and Crazy? Sung Joon’s walking by and stops to listen. Poong Ho says that it's normal to have feelings and then fight too. And while you fight, you can flirt too. He had a feeling they were way too close. Hye Jin protests that it's not like that! Poong Ho laughs at her and says that he knows everything. How far did they go? She glares at him, appalled by the question. As Poong Ho says that it's the season of love. Sung Joon frowns and walks away.

Joon Woo is walking down the hall, talking to his Dad. He congratulations Dad, calling him ‘President.’ Seol overhears and is sure that she snagged the right one. He gets off the phone asks if Joon Woo’s father is a president? He says that his dad really wanted to be the president of his morning soccer club and he finally became one. The president of morning soccer club? Seol shakes off that and tells herself that there's no reason you can't be a president of a morning soccer club when you're the president. She tells Joon Woo that Father must be so busy but he plays soccer too.

Joon Woo nods and says that Dad is ve-ry busy. He gets knotted up after a whole day of doing alterations and ironing so he does it for exercise. Alterations? Ironing? Why is his father ironing... Joon Woo says that Dad has a ve-ry big dry cleaning business in Gangnam. Dad is very skilled so he's pretty famous around Gangnam. He holds out his jacket and says that Dad made this too.

Seol asks why he speaks English so well. Didn't he go to school overseas? Joon Woo says that, of course, he would. Dad had a dry cleaning business in L.A. for about 6-7 years. And his accent actually makes that plausible and not just something they say. Seol starts to freak. Joon Woo asks, since Dad is really good with women's clothes, if Seol wants Dad to make her something. Heck, if Dad can make clothes that look like designer, she could dress totally in style for a minutia of the price.

Shin Hyuk gets out of a car. Driver says that he will call Shin Hyuk and bows. Shin Hyuk frowns as he bows back and tells Driver that he doesn’t have to.

Sung Joon is thinking about Shin Hyuk and how Shin Hyuk likes Hye Jin. Hye Jin enters with the minutes. He tells her to, from now on, put the minutes into a file. There's no need to bring them to him one by one. He’s giving her the cold treatment again. She turns to leave but he stops her and pulls out 10,000 won from his wallet. She asks why and he says that he heard she paid for it. She realizes he means the quick fee and says that he doesn't have to give it to her.

He looks up at her and says that since it's business, it's not right for him to let her spend her own money. He’s under the impression that she doesn't like things being imprecise even more than he does. She wordlessly takes the money, bows and starts to go. Sad and desperate, Sung Joon says that he can't do it, Hye Jin. He can't do it. Being just her classmate, keeping business and personal separate, he can't do it.

No. He doesn't want to. Exactly why does he have to do this? He doesn't understand! She turns around to face him, but before he figures out what to say, Joo Young comes in with work for Sung Joon. Hye Jin leaves. Sung Joon tries to regain his composure.

At her desk, Hye Jin looks at her onion and the sad side. Sung Joon looks at her.

Shin Hyuk thanks the Director he’s met for the interview. The response to the previews have been great and it should do well. Director says that there’s something he’s a little disappointed about. Shin Hyuk is puzzled: Did he do something wrong? Director asks why he’s become so boring? Shin Hyuk is shocked at that idea. Director say that Shin Hyuk’s become sooo boring! He hasn’t done an interview with anyone else and he's doing one with Shin Hyuk only because Shin Hyuk’s so much fun. Shin Hyuk nods in understanding as Director says that when he sees Shin Hyuk, he sees himself and when he sees himself, he feels like he’s seeing Shin Hyuk.

But today's interview was definitely not exciting. Shin Hyuk asks what he should do and then puts on Shin Hyuk fun guy. Director is happy now.

Shin Hyuk leaves the interview and calls someone and talks in English. He tells Caller that he’ll be there soon and that he misses Caller too. Mom? Cousin? He tells Caller to stay in touch, okay? And Siwon has a decent English accent. He hangs up and sighs that maybe it's time for him to leave.

Ha Ri is meeting one of her oppas, but won’t let him hold her hand. Hye Jin arrives and asks who Oppa is. Ha Ri calls Oppa the wrong name – which he corrects – and tells him to wait by the car. When Hye Jin asks who Oppa is, she says he’s just someone she knows. Hye Jin asks what Ha Ri’s doing with a guy whose name she doesn't even know? Ha Ri asks why Hye Jin’s surprised. It's not like Hye Jin doesn't know her already.

Hye Jin starts to pull Ha Ri inside, saying they need to talk. Ha Ri resists, but Hye Jin pulls her inside. Ha Ri asks what Hye Jin’s doing. Hye Jin yells back, asking what Ha Ri’s doing?! She sounds mad. If Ha Ri’s upset, she’s upset. If it's hard, it's hard. Just say it. Don't act like she’s fine. Ha Ri asks why Hye Jin’s yelling? Of course Ha Ri would tell Hye Jin if she was upset! Hye Jin says that Ha Ri was crying. She saw Ha Ri. Ha Ri was crying so hard yesterday. It was her, right? Ha Ri looks away. Hye Jin asks how long Ha Ri is going to act like she’s okay? Don't be by herself-

Ha Ri says that the one who is acting like they know or that they are okay... Isn't that Hye Jin? "Are you a friend?" "How could you do something like that to me?" "You're the worst! You're disgusting and I never want to see you again!" Hye Jin should be mad at her! Hye Jin yells back that she is mad. Very! But...! It's not because of Sung Joon. Maybe Ha Ri couldn't just tell her. She’s the one who asked Ha Ri to do that from the beginning. She’s the one responsible for creating this mess but what makes her angry is... Ha Ri’s attitude right now. Don't keep just avoiding her. Give an excuse or something. How long is Ha Ri going to keep avoiding her me like a little kid?

Ha Ri replies that this is all she can do. Like Hye Jin. Hye Jin doesn’t like that. Ha Ri sighs and says that she’s tired. They should just quit everything. She just... will disappear. What is she doing?! She starts to leave and Hye Jin says that she will disappear. She’s the one who's living at Ha Ri’s place. She goes into her room and starts packing. Ha Ri goes into her room.

Hye Jin arrives home with her stuff. Her parents are surprised to see her. They ask about Ha Ri and it’s obvious by how Hye Jin answers that the two had a fight. Hye Rin is massaging her face with that contraption and when Hye Jin snaps at her, she tells herself never to become like Hye Jin!

Sung Joon walks by Hye Jin’s desk and notices the sad onion. He remembers them agreeing to only think about the present. He calls his umbrella. When it’s answered, he says they should meet. He’ll be in front of her house. But it’s Hye Rin on the phone.

So Sung Joon heads over to Hye Jin’s family’s house. Her parents are laughing at how different Sung Joon is now. Hye Jin arrives and finds Sung Joon there. Oma asks if he’s really that cutie chubby kid who used to live next door to them? He replies that he did change a lot. He asks if Oma’s been well. Has Abeonim been well? Oma says that she would have never recognized him on the street. Hye Jin asks why he’s there. Hye Rin says that Oppa called so she gave him permission. Oppa said he wanted to meet her.

Hye Jin sits, asking how long Hye Rin’s been calling Sung Joon Oppa. Hye Rin can’t believe that Sung Joon was actually chubby when he was young. Sung Joon says that he basically lived in their house back then. Appa asks if Sung Joon has… a girlfriend? Hye Jin protests that they don't have that kind of a relationship! Why is Appa asking?! Sung Joon answers that he doesn’t, but there’s a great chance of things progressing.

Oma and Appa look at each other – because they aren’t stupid. Appa suggests they open the quince wine they made. Oma is all about that. Hye Jin protests that Sung Joon can’t drink but Sung Joon says that he really wants to try some quince wine. Appa hands the wine to Sung Joon, calling him ‘Son-in-law Ji.’ Hye Jin protests but they ignore her. Why does her family ignore her? They did this when Ha Ri was there, too.

Sung Joon and Appa clink glasses and Sung Joon drinks it. He compliments the wine saying it’s very fragrant. Hye Rin mutters, “Of course it tastes good. Where is there a human in the world who doesn't drink alcohol?” And then Sung Joon passes out, his head banging on the table. Heh. Hye Jin groans and Appa points at soon and says, “Right here.”

Ha Ri returns home. A woman says her name, calling her Ha Ri-a. She looks up and is in shock. Woman – who I am betting is her Mom – asks if she’s been well. Ha Ri fights crying and walks away. Mom asks if Ha Ri hasn’t… missed Mom? It is her Mom. What a week she’s having! Ha Ri’s lip trembles. Mom asks Ha Ri to come be with her now. Please be by her side now. Mom is crying. Ha Ri starts crying and turns around to look at her mother. They cry as they look at each other.

Hye Jin can’t sleep.

Oma and Appa are watching Sung Joon sleep. Oma says that he grew up so well. When did that chubby little kid become a man? He has such full eyebrows and a strong jaw line, too. Appa says that he thinks Sung Joon has feelings for Hye Jin. Oma agrees that he wouldn't have come to their house if he didn't. They giggle to each other as Hye Jin leaves her room. She can’t believe them and orders them back to their room! Hurry! They tease her and go to their room.

She sits down next to Sung Joon and smiles down at him. He wakes up. He’s confused as to why he’s there. She asks if he’s okay. He looks at her and says that he isn’t. Because of her, he’s not. He wants to go outside. He has something to say.

They sit far apart outside. Sung Joon asks if Hye Jin really isn’t going to tell him the reason. If she doesn't tell him, he keeps becoming foolish. He thought maybe it was because of Reporter Kim but it's not. He’s sure it's how she feels. Being foolish and having misunderstandings... He doesn't want to do it, Hye Jin. She sighs and says that maybe being just his first love is special. He knows that’s how first love is. Things that weren't anything special seem prettier, brighter, and stay sweet in your memory. But, that's when they were young. So now–

He interrupts her and says that back then, she took the place of his mom and she was the only real friend he had. That's why it was that much more special. But, all of that doesn't matter now. She’s someone that he came to like in the present. Even if she wasn’t the Kim Hye Jin who he knew, even if they had met as strangers, he would have been drawn to her once more and his heart would have fluttered once more because of her and once more, he would have liked her. He asks her again: why she’s being this way, won’t she please tell him? She doesn’t say anything for a while.

Then she says that Ha Ri… Ha Ri likes him a lot. While suffering by herself, wanting to meet you even if Ha Ri had to pretend to be her... Hye Jin says that she thinks Ha Ri liked him that much. Ha Ri, to her, she's more than just a friend. She's just as precious as Hye Jin’s family and he is to her. But if she comes to him now, Ha Ri will get hurt and she will feel uncomfortable, too. She can't pretend not to know Ha Ri's feelings. She doesn't want to do that while hurting her.

Sung Joon sighs. He stands up and stands in front of her. She looks at his feet. He tells her to look at him. He squats and tells her again. She does. He says that the one he likes... is her. Back then too, it was her and even when her didn't know who she was, it was her. Right now, it's her and in the future, it's her. Well… He says that he won’t push her. He doesn’t want anything else from her. Just... please don't run away. Just do that for him. Hye Jin sighs.

Sung Joon chuckles to himself and pats her head affectionately. He says that she was so nice back then, too. She's become even nicer while they’ve been apart. He smiles again and says that he’s happy that she hasn’t changed.

Entering the office the next day, Sung Joon runs in and gets in the revolving door with her. He also makes it stop. Awkward moment and good morning.

Upstairs, Ah Reum gets off the phone and moans about Shin Hyuk. What's with him?! Poong Ho asks what about Crazy. She just talked to a friend who works at New Look and Kim Shin Hyuk is going over to New Look! They can’t believe it. Joo Young doesn’t believe it. No matter who tried to scout him, he always turned them down. He never once met with anyone. Sung Joon’s heard and he doesn’t look happy. Ah Reum says that Shin Hyuk already met with someone from New Look.

Seol can’t believe it. Then, he's not the son of Jin Sung Group? Then, is Kim Poong Ho the son? No, New Look could have scouted him without knowing he's the president's son. Ah! What is this? She’s so confused!

Shin Hyuk enters, wearing a frown. They immediately swarm on him, demanding to know if he’s going to New Look. He groans and wonders how a rumor gets around so fast? They take that as a ‘yes.’ They start to protest again. Poong Ho stands and tells Crazy that his heart already left and that's why he’s been saying that things were so boring these days. Shin Hyuk agrees with that. Poong Ho’s surprised that he agreed. Shin Hyuk looks at all of them and asks if they’re planning on staying there forever? He fakes a smile and then gets up and walks away. Hye Jin hurries after him.

She catches him in the hall and asks if he’s going over to New Look? He answers that he’s not going to New Look. But says it like there’s some place else he’s going. Hye Jin sighs with relief. Then she catches it and asks if it’s not there, is he going somewhere else? He says he doesn’t know either. He gives another fake smile and walks away, grim-faced.

Later, Joo Young enters and announces that their current edition, made a record in sales! Even the ad sales went up. She just heard from the management team. Everyone cheers. Hye Jin asks if The Most over took New Look. It didn’t. Poong Ho declares that it was worth working with the Deputy Chief Editor. He hopes it keeps getting better! Hye Jin looks over at Sung Joon and he’s working. They all want to have a company meal. Ra Ra appears – wearing a flamenco dancer’s outfit – and declares that, of course, they should! A day like this should be enjoyed to the fullest. She has a date, so she can’t go but she gives them her gold card to use.

Hye Jin looks over at Sung Joon again and he is struggling. Ra Ra tells them that with the next edition, she will expect first place. Ah Reum says that she got the chills. What she just said... didn't she sound like Deputy Chief Editor? Joo Young agrees. Ra Ra has never mentioned ranking before.

Ha Ri’s Mom is visiting Hye Jin’s Oma and has brought her jewelry. She made it herself. Mom says that it may sounds like she’s boasting but it sells pretty well in Japan. Oma declares that she’s so cool. A pause and Mom says that she should have been single sooner. Because she couldn't stand not being loved by a man whom she loved, she left like she was running away but she’s given our Ha Ri a huge scar. All this time, she couldn't come back because she had no confidence but she worked really hard so she could show up in front of Ha Ri. Her voice is thick with emotion. It cracks as she says that she’s pretty tough now too.

Oma asks if Mom’s going to take Ha Ri with her. Mom says that she wants to keep Ha Ri next to her and do all the things she haven't been able to do for Ha Ri. But, Ha Ri won't even listen to her. Isn't it terrible?

Ha Ri’s taking a break at work when she gets a text from Mom, who says that she’s flying out in a couple of days. Before she goes, will Ha Ri not let her see Ha Ri? Ha Ri makes a call. She asks if Mom still makes the crab-meat porridge well.

It’s late at work. Hye Jin decides to head home. Sung Joon is still there. He mimes coffee and she makes some. She tells him that, instead of working so hard by himself, how about talking to the rest of the team and looking for a solution together? Sung Joon says that they will be agitated... and some people will try to leave before then. Hye Jin says that he looks like he's having a hard time by himself. He leans in and says that if she gives him a hug, he might get energized. He smiles at her and leans into his hand. It's not possible, right? She blinks. He says that he’s joking. Sure he is.

Sung Joon looks up Shin Hyuk’s employment record and his address. #2024, 58-2 Shinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Sung Joon heads to the address – the hotel, leaving behind a stack of magazines with tons of Shin Hyuk articles. Sung Joon asks the front desk if there’ someone named Kim Shin Hyuk in #2024. Worker apologizes and says that due to their policy, she can't disclose our guests' information. He understands and happens to leave, just as the valet arrives with Shin Hyuk’s Mustang. Sung Joon gets his attention.

They go for a drink. Sung Joon asks if that’s where Shin Hyuk normally lives? He answers, asking if it doesn't it seem that way. Sung Joon asks why he’s living in a hotel. That beard of Shin Hyuk’s is getting thicker and thicker. Sung Joon nonchalantly replies that they give him food, clean up, and do his laundry too. Since it's comfortable. Sung Joon says that he heard the rumor that Shin Hyuk got scouted by New Look. Is he going? Shin Hyuk answers – with a tone like he's annoyed by the question but trying to be Zen – that he could go or not go and he doesn't know either. Things are not that much fun these days. You could say he’s thinking about a lot of things.

Sung Joon sighs and says that he won't beat around the bush. He came to get Shin Hyuk. Can't he stay on The Most’s team. Shin Hyuk answers that he thought he irritated Sung Joon. Sung Joon admits that Shin Hyuk bothers him personally. No, Shin Hyuk used to bother him. But he... he needs Shin Hyuk’s skill. Shin Hyuk smiles – that fake pleasant smile of his – and says that he doesn’t know if that's criticism or flattery. Sung Joon takes Hye Jin’s advice and levels with him about the threat of closing the magazine. If Shin Hyuk isn’t part of the team, it will be difficult to keep The Most open.

Shin Hyuk whistles and declares that it’s a shocker. He asks what they should do. He’s not someone who stays because someone wants him to. He starts to leave when Sung Joon says that the twenty year anniversary edition is their last chance. Just one more time... He corrects himself and says, just one last time. Please think about it.

Next day, Joo Young asks where Shin Hyuk is. He didn't come today either? Hasn't it been two days already? It looks like he’s quit. He sent us all the articles he was working to Eun Yung’s email. They grumble about what a jerk he is for leaving. Hye Jin goes out on the terrace and tries calling him. He doesn’t answer. Someone calls right after that and she assumes it’s Shin Hyuk. She says why he isn’t there. He’s not really going to stop coming to work, is he?

But it’s not Shin Hyuk. It’s someone from Ha Ri’s work, concerned because he hasn’t been able to reach Ha Ri. This gets Hye Jin worried. She gets more worried when Ha Ri’s phone is out of service. Man has said that Ha Ri after handing in her resignation but their General Manager wanted to speak with her.

Hye Jin hurries home. Ha Ri’s shelves are empty. There’s a to-do list on her bed:

1. Hotel 2. Get rid of the car 3. Close accounts 4. Organize clothes, shoes, bags

Hye Jin immediately takes a taxi. She’s chomping nervously. She reaches the airport and runs through it, looking for Ha Ri. She thinks of them as kids. Hye Jin is hurt and Ha Ri is pushing her up a hill in a cart. Hye Jin tells Ha Ri to leave but Ha Ri replies, asking where she's going to go without Hye Jin? Hye Jin starts to moan and cry loudly.

VO says: Ha Ri left her.

Thoughts

I don't believe for a minute that Ha Ri is gone for good. Hye Jin does, but I don't. Yes, she's quit her job  and packed up a bunch of her stuff, but I can't see her running away like that. Yes, she avoided telling Sung Joon for a while, but she was ready and planning to tell him when they saw each other. She wasn't going to run anymore and when he confronted her, she didn't try to lie to get away from his wrath. She also did exactly what she told Hye Jin what she would do: return to the life she was living before, acting like it's the life she wanted.

I don't have any theories on what's actually going on, though. The list Hye Jin found could be Ha Ri's Mom's list, since Mom's planning on leaving soon. And maybe she quit her job because it came from her dad and she's done with him for depriving her of Mom for all these years. We never did see their conversation.

One thing I liked about this episode: Sung Joon, once he figured out the truth, was very straightforward about what he was feeling and expected Hye Jin to be the same. He didn't get all angsty but she expected Hye Jin to tell him what she was feeling. He did still feel a little like he was clinging onto that image of Hye Jin, but after she 'rejected' him, he realized that the past didn't matter. His love explanation - it's you in the past, you in the present and you in the future - was very sweet.

But, even though Sung Joon was very sweet, I'm still not persuaded that he's the man that Hye Jin should be with. I still like her with Shin Hyuk. Stinking writers! We actually saw Sung Joon first, but Shin Hyuk shortly after that. Skinship happened between Hye Jin and Shin Hyuk first -- in the form of that piggyback ride -- and I've been wracking my brain to think of when it's the love loser who gives the ride. The only one I can think of - and I can think of tons of rides - is the one in 'Marriage Not Dating.'  Shin Hyuk is also the one who keeps coming to her rescue, mostly anonymously. And that part is more 2nd lead territory. I hate watching Shin Hyuk suffer and right now, he is so miserable. I can't see him falling for Hye Jin, though, not now.

One thing I didn't like about this episode, was how Hye Jin acted now that Sung Joon definitely likes her. She still hasn't really confessed that she likes him, using Ha Ri as an excuse. I'm hoping that she'll start missing Shin Hyuk and realize that she feels something more than friendship for him and that these sweet feelings are just friendship. But, probably not. Right now, if she ends up with Shin Hyuk, this drama will boot 'Protect the Boss' off my top 10 list. I 'm just begging the writers not to disappoint me and make first loves last loves. Please.
