Divorce Lawyer in Love Episode 1 Recap

Ever since I saw that Yun Woo Jin was going to be in a new drama, I have been eagerly waiting for it to begin. And it doesn’t look like it’s going to disappoint.

The series begins with dramatic music playing (kind of reminds me of something from ‘The Apprentice’ or ‘The Amazing Race’) and our leads standing on the helipad of a rooftop. So Jung Woo (Yun Woo Jin) sneers, telling Go Cheok Hee that she’s a psycho. (And Korean for psycho is ‘psycho’) Cheok Hee (Jo Yeo Jung) answers back that Jung Woo is an as$hole. Nice yellow business suit. He replies that she still has a bad temperament. She laughs one of those laughs people do when they’re in disbelief and says that he still shows no promise of success.

Jung Woo slaps his chest for emphasis and declares that he is her boss! She laughs, scoffingly, and tells him that he grew up a lot. Three years ago, he couldn't even look her in the eyes.

And we go back to three years ago.

That begins with Jung Woo (in glasses) getting pelted in the face with some sort of rice confection. It even goes in his mouth. He is appropriately grossed out as he removes his glasses and looks back and forth between the two combatants, two spouses who are irate and throwing food at each other. We see that he’s in a grocery store. Jung Woo is no longer in a suit, but is wearing a sweatshirt. He begs the wife not to throw her latest piece of artillery. She ignores him.

As he’s dodging food, his phone drops from his pocket. When it lands on the floor, we see that Cheok Hee is calling. The phone is on vibrate, which is probably why Jung Woo is going to miss the call. The spouses keep throwing food and Jung Woo looks like he wants to explode. The wife yells that they should get a divorce. Husband retorts that she’s throwing things that look just like her! He grabs some peppers and pelts Jung Woo instead of his target. And I’m wondering why he’s still standing between them in the line of fire. She laughs and tells him that he’s throwing things that look like him: wrinkled. Husband yells at Wife to get out! She yells that she will once he pays her! He refuses! They start throwing food again.

Jung Woo has finally had enough. He yells for them to STOP! I think they’re a little shocked at the intensity because they stop. He sighs to compose himself. He tells Husband that Civil Code Section 839-2 provides that the method and percentage of division of the amount of wealth and other assets that both parties have earned together must be decided in person at court. Therefore, Ajusshi can't kick Wife out without giving her any money. Wife yells that Husband is a dummy. Jung Woo quickly tells her that Civil Code Section 837-2 provides that the non-custodial parent has visitation rights. Therefore, she can't stop Husband from seeing his kids. Husband crows that now it’s Wife who’s stupid.

Wife declares that they should do it according to the law! That’s fine with Husband. Jung Woo tells them that the house, money, shop, and kids can be divided according to law, but it cannot divide their hearts in half. He uses a chopping motion with his hands for emphasis. One side will get hurt, no matter what. He grabs a chocolate popsicle from the freezer and opens it. When he breaks it in half, one side very obviously has more on it. He tells them that once they split, they can't go back.

Jung Woo starts to leave – and I notice that he hasn’t picked up his phone – but stops when he realizes that he forgot to pay. As Ajumma takes his money, she sheepishly asks if he’s a lawyer. He doesn’t answer but leaves instead.

[Episode One: That man has a face off with that woman]

Switch to a nightclub with loud, scratchy techno music playing. A woman – Yoo Hye Rin (Yang Ji Won from Spica/T’ara) – is enjoying the club.

Switch to a yoga class. Instructor tells them to think of the face that gives you the most stress. Lee Kyung (Lee Dong Hwi) looks like he’s really trying to get someone out of his mind.

Back to club where Hye Rin flirts and dances seductively.

Yoga class. Kyung is struggling as Instructor tells says, “I love you, I love you.”

Club.

Yoga class.

Club. As Hye Rin gyrates, guy reaches for her rear. Her phone begins to buzz. So does Kyung’s phone. When they look at the name, they’re both irritated: Go Cheok Hee. And, amazingly, they have different cell phones! Hye Rin quickly but reluctantly runs from the club.

Switch to a wall of awards and degrees. One reads “Lawyer Go Cheok Hee.” A woman’s voice declares that Cheok Hee is a psycho who thinks that Sunday is part of the work week. A man’s voice declares that she’s a crazy woman, who only has a work life and no personal life! A woman declares that she wields a knife of Satan called divorce, she’s Chucky! Camera pans into Cheok Hee’s face and she does, indeed, wear the expression of that possessed doll, Chucky. In fact, the image morphs into Chucky’s face.

It morphs back to the smiling Cheok Hee. Behind her is a sign which reads that divorce is a blessing. A figurine of Chucky sits on her desk. Her name plate says that she’s Law Firm Chuk Bok’s lawyer, Go Cheok Hee. And Chuk Bok means blessing in Korean. Someone is pacing – and I’m assuming that it’s her – as a woman in huge sunglasses apathetically declares that she was just passing by, but she noticed that this place had lights on even though it’s Sunday. It is Cheok Hee. Woman takes off her huge glasses to reveal a large bruise on one eye. Graphic declares “Domestic violence.” Cheok Hee can practically contain her smile as she sits and pours a cup of tea.

Cheok Hee slides the cup over to Woman and spies her phone. The wallpaper is a young child. Graphic declares “Request for custody.” The fancy keychain Woman sets down gets the graphic “Division of assets” Woman notices the poster and declares that divorce isn’t   a blessing; it’s a failure. Cheok Hee ignores her and asks how many business cards she got? Woman is confused. Cheok Hee asks how many lawyers she’s met with? She holds out her hands for Woman to put the cards in. Wow, she’s bold, considering this woman just ‘happened’ to come by. She knows it wasn’t an accident. Woman gets the cards out of her purse and gives them to Cheok Hee. Cheok Hee throws them in the trash.

Cheok Hee declares that it’s not the number of business cards, but *whose* business cards that’s important. She takes one of her cards and slides it across the table at Woman. As Woman looks at it, Cheok Hee beams as she declares that isn’t it a blessing when you don't have to see a person you hate more than dying? Woman nods, looking like she’s about to cry. She smiles wider as she asks the wife how much money she wants to get.

Pan out of building, where Cheok Hee’s office is the only light on and a sign reads Chuk Bok Law Firm, Specializes in Divorce. Hye Rin and Kyung run up, panting from the effort to get there quickly. She declares that it’s been three weeks of hell. He declares that after going to a place to relieve stress, he got more stress! Her phone rings again.

Phone rings. The pair now are standing in front of Cheok Hee, who is furious that Jung Woo is not picking up the phone. She asks them how many times she’s called. Kyung replies, “34.” She yells at the phone in frustration, calling Jung Woo ‘Jung Ho.’ Kyung faltingly corrects her. Does he even have lenses in those glasses? Hye Rin timidly asks why Cheok Hee called them. Cheok Hee replies – like they are stupid – that it’s to rehearse Han Mi Ri's case. Kyung halting protests that they’ve already rehearsed more than three... times. Cheok Hee smiles and shakes her head. She declares that the situation has changed. She orders Kyung to call Jung Woo every three minutes. She tells Hye Rin to take off her fake eyelashes.

The next morning. Jung Woo arrives at work. He greets Hye Rin and Kyung, who look like they’ve been there all night. Hye Rin weakly calls his name. Kyung whispers as he asks Jung Woo why he didn’t answer his phone. Cheok Hee’s completely livid. He emphasizes the livid part making his fingers into devil’s horns. Jung Woo can’t believe that they spent the whole night there. Cheok Hee arrives to ask him if he’s finally gracing them with his presence. He smiles and bows politely as he greets her. She’s insulted that he’s not cowering.

Cheok Hee wants to know why he didn't pick up his phone. He realizes and explains that he must have lost it phone at the supermarket. She declares that it’s such a lame excuse. He should have said that his father passed away! Although, I don’t even think that would have gotten some grace from her… She tells him that there are only two things that subordinates can say to their boss: “Yes, I understand. I'm sorry.” He looks over at Hye Rin and Kyung, who nods that he should just do it. He doesn’t respond, so Cheok Hee repeats herself. He forces himself to pleasantly apologize and bow respectfully.

Cheok Hee’s still not satisfied. She asks Jung Woo if he’s out of his mind! There's Han Mi Ri's court appeal and they didn't even finish reading through all of Park Chan Woo's phone call records for the adultery case. He responds, “I love you like crazy.” And I’m wondering if that’s true. That shocks Cheok Hee into silence. Everyone else is shocked, too. Jung Woo continues, saying, “June 3rd, 7:30 at night… “Can we just run away and live?” June 7th, 2:43 in the morning. Hye Rin realizes what he’s done and starts to hunt for the phone records. Jung Woo makes hand symbols as he says (in English) “Heart, heart, heart, lips, lips, lips.” June 14th, 6:18 p.m.. Cheok Hee looks at him shocked and annoyed that she can’t keep yelling at him.

Hye Rin is amazed and declares that he’s correct! She wants to know how he memorized everything. She shows the phone records to Cheok Hee. It’s all there. Cheok Hee grimaces because he’s showed her up and she definitely can’t keep yelling at him. Jung Woo raises his hand, like he’s requesting permission to speak. Cheok Hee begrudgingly asks what he wants. He says he’ll be back after eating breakfast. She can’t believe that he’s just coming in now and wants to go eat. Non-plussed, he declares that if he doesn't eat breakfast, he can't work. In exchange, he’ll work the extra hours from last night. She just turns around and heads back to her office.

Kyung starts to tell Cheok Hee that she should eat with them but Hye Rin stops him, because Cheok Hee has *never* eaten with them. Which says something because in Korea, office will go out together for meals.

Cheok Hee goes into her office and puts on her jacket. It doesn’t quite make it off the hanger, so she puts that on, too. Although, how she didn’t notice it, since it’s one of those nice sturdy plastic ones, I don’t know how. She stops and orders them to be back by 9 o'clock. Jung Woo notices the hanger. It’s really obvious. She stresses that everybody must be there. He starts to try to tell her about the hanger, but she just walks off. The other two notice the hanger. Kyung mutters that he doesn’t want to get scolded, so Hye Rin should tell her. Hye Rin replies that her mother told her that even if a war breaks out, she shouldn’t open her mouth to risk her life.

Jung Woo decides to bite the bullet. Because he’s a good office manager. He hurries out to catch Cheok Hee at the elevator. With hand gestures asking please, he asks if he can tell her something, if he's not being too rude. She replies that if it’s something that is rude, he shouldn't tell her. He tries to protest, but she shushes him, putting her index finger on his nose as he reaches for the hanger. She tells him that she thought she already gave him the right answer: “Yes, I understand. I'm sorry.” He nods, lips pressed together and motions that he’s zipping them. She smiles, triumphant, and gets on the elevator.

Off to breakfast. Jung Woo orders two seolleongtang. Kyung is surprised. Jung Woo tells them that he already ate breakfast. It seemed like they didn't eat anything since yesterday. Aw, what a nice guy. The food arrives and he tells them to eat a lot. He asks them why they had to spend the whole night at the office. What more is there to rehearse for Han Mi Ri's case? Kyung says that Cheok Hee found Ma Dong Goo's CCTV footage, the evidence they were looking for. Jung Woo is surprised. And he looks a little upset, like this isn’t a good thing.

Cheok Hee sits down at a upscale restaurant. And still doesn’t notice the hanger. She tells the waiter she wants a seafood salad (English) without squid, broccoli cheese (English) soup without broccoli, and carbonara without the cream sauce (English). And she wants an iced americano without ice. Waiter notices the hanger and tries to say something but she starts to be haughty about having the right to order what she wants in a five-star restaurant. He tries to tell her again, but she tells him that there are only two things that a waiter should say to their customer: “Yes, I understand. I'm sorry.” Wow. He’s brave. He tells her that she’s wearing a hanger and if she stands up, he can explain further. She doesn’t looks embarrassed, but stands. He pulls up on the hanger and lifts her off the ground. She’s shocked. Other customers laugh. He puts her down and repeats that she’s wearing a hanger.

Cheok Hee tries to save face by asking the waiter if they have Osso Buco. He starts to reply that they *do,* but she talks over him, declaring that they don’t and that’s why they can’t become a six star restaurant. She declares that she has to go to another restaurant. As she leaves, she pulls out the hanger and angrily wants to know how Jung Woo could see her like that and not say anything!

As she enters the court house, Jung Woo arrives, panting from running, telling her she has to stop. She starts to yell at him for not saying something before she went out to eat. She declares that they did it on purpose to screw her over. She sighs and sheepishly says that he tried to tell her. Which he did. She cuts him off, tell him not say unnecessary words! Didn't she tell him to swallow his words? He inwardly groans over not saying something rude and instead gets to why he ran there: Ma Dong Goo's CCTV footage. Is she really going to use it? She clears her throat as her answer of ‘yes.’ He inwardly groans again and declares – rather loudly – that she obtained the evidence illegally!

Cheok Hee clamps her hand over his mouth to tell him to shut up. Jung Woo stops talking. She declares that it's a lawyer's job to make evidence that you can't use into evidence that you can use. Raising his hand again, he declares that he objects. They should not see evidence that the law tell them not to see. She asks him if he wants them to lose. He sighs, trying to reason with her, as he asks if it’s winning if she cheats. And Ma Dong Goo does not want a divorce. Cheok Hee talks to him like he’s stupid, declaring that he’s not protesting because he wants to live with Han Mi Ri. He’s dragging his feet so that he can sell land, sell stocks, hide his assets under bank accounts with a fake name, and once everything’s settled, he'll probably quote extravagance, turn the tables, and bring suit against her himself. It’s a commonly-used method to chase her out without giving her any money.

Jung Woo’s face is still protesting as Cheok Hee tells him that ninety-nine percent of men who do not want a divorce are in that category! Jung Woo responds – almost hopeful that he's got an argument that she’s going to listen to – that there is still one percent of possibility. Instead of giving him that, she points at a sign on the wall. It’s the sign with her name on it. She declares that a lawyer decides whether she's going to use the evidence or not. She walks off and he winces as he holds his tongue.

Now in the bathroom, Jung Woo is muttering to himself, because he’s about to go crazy, seriously. If the fact that she installed the CCTV illegally comes out, she is going to blame me. And someone was listening, like I *knew* they would be, because he’s muttering in a bathroom. It’s Hye Rin. Jung Woo’s doubly shocked because she’s in the men’s room. She replies that she doesn’t want to share a toilet seat with Go ‘Chucky’. And I just realized Cheok Hee sounds exactly like Chucky. Wow. She asks him if the CCTV was really illegally installed. He motions for her to be quiet, finger to his lips. He declares that he can't do it and is going to the courthouse.

A woman (Wang Ji Won) is calling someone on the phone. I like her. She was the 2^nd lead in ‘I Need Romance 3.’ The sign behind her reads, Lawyer Jo Soo Ah. She sighs when she reaches voicemail. And doesn’t leave a message. Instead she mutters at the phone about the person she is trying to reach.

Switch to Bong Min Kyu (Shin Hyung Tak) who is trying on a new jacket in the men’s department of a store. Soo Ah climbs the steps and declares, when she sees him, that she’s called 76 times and sent 48 texts. That would have me muttering at the phone, too. He sighs and declares that he gets sick of women who obsess over him. She starts to protest, but he cuts her off, asking why she’s looking for him when she’s not even going to give it to him once. And I’m certain that they’re *not* talking about sex. She asks if he’ll answer the phone if she gives it to him once. He’s surprised that she’s relenting. She declares that it’s Ma Dong Goo's trial and she’d rather give it to him once rather than keep looking for him. Heh. He snarks that she’s rough (pretty forward for a woman).

Soo Ah looks at her watch and asks if he realizes that attendance is mandatory for the Family Law Team. Min Kyu straightens his ties and says that it’s why he’s there buying clothes. He asks if his Abeoji will be there. Min Kyu nods and declares that Abeoji will bring a hoard of lawyers with him to intimidate his opponent. He sighs and asks how she knew he was there. She replies that she’s been looking in every shop since Cheondamdong for him. He gives her the thumbs up and says that pretty girls are smart nowadays.

They exit the boutique - Don Varas, which I have never heard of. Sometimes k-dramas will make up a name and use a logo similar to the famous designer that they're referencing, but I couldn't find any logo that looked like the Don Varas logo, so I guess they totally made up an designer. Soo Ah’s phone rings. It’s Abeoji. He wants to know if Min Kyu is coming. She makes an excuse for Min Kyu not answering his phone, saying that he dropped it in the toilet so he took out the battery. She assures Abeoji that they’re heading directly to the courthouse. Soo Ah glares at Min Kyu, who gives her the thumbs up. And a child walking by trips and gets ketchup on his brand-new suit. Which he could easily wipe off and it wouldn’t be noticeable because it’s a dark grey tweed. The child’s mother apologizes and asks if his suit is expensive. It is expensive. About ₩20,000,000. Mom starts slapping kid and yelling at her for being clumsy, especially since Mom didn’t want to buy it in the first place. Kid starts to cry.

Min Kyu grabs Mom’s arm and asks Mom what she’s doing. Mom protests that he said the suit was expensive. He agrees that it is, but it's just clothes. Wow, I didn’t expect him to not be so shallow. Soo Ah sighs and looks at her watch. Does she think a ₩20,000,000 suit is worth more than the innocence of the child? Of course, Mom doesn’t. Min Kyu declares that it’s the adults' fault for building the sidewalk like this. He squats down and tells the crying girl to grow up to be kind and strong and gives her some money to buy a new treat. Then he goes back into the boutique to get a new jacket.


Reporter. News coverage of the divorce trial of DK Electronics CEO Ma Dong Goo and Actress Han Mi Ri. The courtship between a nameless actress and a second-generation chaebol grabbed the public’s attention. After seven years of marriage, Han Mi Ri has filed for divorce. Are the rumors true? Is the split because of Ma Dong Goo's affair with his secretary? Cheok Hee arrives at the courthouse and wonders why the press wants to film the lawyers as well. She pulls out a mirror to check her appearance. ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ plays as she climbs out of the car. She poses and smiles graciously. They quickly hurry over to Soo Ah and Min Kyu.

The reporters ask if the rumors are true. Soo Ah says that Mi Ri’s team is claiming that CEO Ma Dong Goo had an inappropriate relationship with his secretary, but they have yet to submit any real evidence. They still haven’t substantiated the claim for the Court of Appeals. She expects this to be a fair and swift trial, with the second trial having the same judgment as the first. And it looks like Kim Gab Soo – Yun Woo Jin’s father in ‘Marriage Not Dating’ – is playing Min Kyu’s father in this show. Abeoji smiles, pleased at her reponse.

The reporters ask Cheok Hee for a rebuttal, asking about the rumors floating around that Han Mi Ri seduced Model Jo Yoo Sang and they went to Europe together. The rumors are that the divorce is because of that man. Cheok Hee is insulted and immediately starts to belittle the reporter for asking such things. He's a gossip from the internet, isn’t he? She storms off and goes inside, grumbling.

Cheok Hee doesn’t notice Jung Woo, so he almost clotheslines her, trying to stop her from entering. Because he’s a really good guy. Aw. He begs her not to use the CCTV. She asks how he dares go over his line! He replies that she can't ruin one person's life to save another’s. He tells her that she’s a lawyer. She laughs and tells him – accentuating by poking him in the forehead – that if he’s so smart, he should be the lawyer instead. Oh, she shouldn’t have said that. Wow, she is going to fall hard.

Cheok Hee shoves Jung Woo aside and walks away. He’s not going to give up. He runs up and grabs her briefcase. A chase ensues around the courthouse. He makes it to the men’s bathroom, but she follows him inside. He threatens to dump her bag in the toilet and begs her to give him the CCTV footage. Instead she grabs his bag and threatens the laptop with going in the men’s urinal. The room fades into the plains of Old West and showdown sound effects play. He begs her not to do it, since he just got the laptop yesterday.

The stand off continues, with Cheok Hee throwing Jung Woo’s mouse into the urinal. He responds by throwing her lipstick in the toilet. She groans that the color stopped being produced in 2010! She tells him they shouldn’t be like this and should end it peacefully. She tells him to take the CD and she’ll give him back his bag. He agees: “Deal.” He gets the CD and they give the bags back at the same time.

Cheok Hee points out the run in her stocking. She tells Jung Woo to go buy her some new ones, since she cannot go in court like that. It doesn’t look credible. She leaves the bathroom and he momentarily celebrates his victory. Which I don’t think is a victory, but a fake out. As she walks toward court, she mutters about what a rude bastard Jung Woo is and asks if he thinks he’s the god of justice or something. He's not even a lawyer, but he's always spouting the law and whether an evidence is valid or not.

Back at the office, Hye Rin spots some post-its and mutters about what a psycho Cheok Hee is. She’s insulted that People even call dogs by their names, but Cheok Hee addresses her note “To those kids.” She remembers her client’s name from three years ago but she doesn't know the names of her employees, who have been working there for three years! She groans and says that she should have quit a long time ago. Kyung asks her how she’s going to survive, if she quits. She smiles and replies that there is a lottery ticket that women don’t have to scratch. If she picks right, the lottery ticket will be daebak. I’m dreading her answer. And she’s talking about Marriage. Kyung mutters about how women are shallow and then wonders about why Jung Woo was so worked up. Hye Rin plays innocent. He believes her.

Cheok Hee and Min Kyu arrive at court. He greets her, calling her ‘Actress Go.’ She’s surprised to see him. He replies that it’s Abeoji’s orders. He tells her that he’s been a fan of her acting since their mock trial sessions in college. That’s one of those back-handed compliments. Abeoji is nice enough to let the ‘Ladies’ go first. She’s surprised that Abeoji didn’t make the proceedings closed to the public. He replies that it’s more fun to watch it together. Some more banter that’s of no consequence. Han Mi Ri looks uncomfortable.

There’s some uncomfortable talk between Han Mi Ri and her husband and her sister-in-law before Cheok Hee puts some earphones on Mi Ri. She tells Mi Ri that the athlete Park Tae Hwan listens to music before his game so he doesn't have to hear any useless sounds. Hyungnim gets insulted but Abeoji cuts her off.

Jung Woo arrives with the panty hose. Cheok Hee uses him as cover to change outside the courtroom. He is scandalized. Soo Ah sees it but doesn’t say anything when they make eye contact. Cheok Hee shoves the old hose at him and makes him throw them away. Soo Ah greets Jung Woo and apparently they know each other. She tells him that Ahjumma said that he gained a little weight. But he looks good. So I guess he was really skinny before. He notices her attorney’s pin and replies that she look goods as well. Inside the courthouse, Cheok Hee notices them talking. The judge arrives while Cheok Hee wonders what they are saying. Soo Ah hurries inside after telling Jung Woo to call her. Then he’s left outside and you can tell that he wishes he was going in as an attorney.

Cheok Hee is presenting her case. The judge has a problem with Cheok Hee’s lack of evidence. She declares that there is some evidence. She holds up the real CD. Jung Woo is horrified. Shocked murmurs. Soo Ah protests that the evidence wasn’t provided in advance. The judge wants to know why Cheok Hee delayed in submitting it, since she’s had plenty of time since January 3^rd to do so. Cheok Hee responds that she didn’t want to have to use it, because it could be harmful to the defendant. She wanted to avoid it as much as she could, but Ma Dong Goo sent his secretary overseas right after he was sued for divorce, so they weren’t able to get any other evidence. Jung Woo can’t believe that Cheok Hee is doing it. The judge asks where the footage was taken. In Ma Dong Goo and Han Mi Ri's house. Both Mi Ri and Jung Woo cringe. Min Kyu makes a face like things have just gotten interesting.

Flashback to Cheok Hee and Jung Woo with Mi Ri in the house. Cheok Hee notices the security cameras and Mi Ri explains that their daughter’s old teacher was strange. They installed the camera because she always had bruises after class. They stopped using them once they changed Seul Gi’s tutor. Cheok Hee asks if Dong Goo knows that it’s there. He does. Cheok Hee tells Jung Woo to go to Yong San and find a the same camera. Jung Woo tries to start to object, but she ignores him.

Back in court, Soo Ah objects that the recording is illegal. Even if it is Mi Ri’s house, installing a CCTV with an objective of spying on someone else's personal life is a violation of privacy, and can be punishable under terms of sexual harassment. Cheok Hee replies that the CCTV was not installed to watch over his personal life. It was installed a year earlier because of Ma Dong Goo's daughter, Seul Gi.

Flashback to Cheok Hee installing the new camera. She verifies that Dong Goo meets with his secretary there and then tells Mi Ri that the new camera is the one installed a year ago. Does she understand what Cheok Hee means?

In court, Cheok Hee claims that it was just a coincidence that the CCTV caught Dong Goo. Jung Woo looks like he wants to keel over. And I just realized that the husband played the Man in Black in ‘You’re All Surrounded.’ I should have recognized his voice, if nothing else, before now. The judge asks Dong Goo if he knew about the cameras. He replies that he knew that there was one in the living room, but not in the office. He's forced to admit that he knew about the camera. The video gets played. Mi Ri looks like she’s extremely uncomfortable.

Footage shows the secretary tempting Dong Goo, asking what Mi Ri might be doing with that actor, and Dong Goo kissing her as a result. It’s almost as if the secretary is setting him up. Murmurs from the audience. The judge declares that the trial will be continued at the main court on 4PM on March 4^th. Dong Goo kicks himself and hurries out of the courtroom.

Elevator. Soo Ah asks Cheok Hee if she set everything up. Cheok Hee just smiles. Abeoji asks Cheok Hee’s name and declares that he expected a lot of things, but not her using a child. She replies that she thought that BF Law Firm can predict anything. Abeoji chuckles and tells her to keep in mind that a person who uses unexpected methods to get to him, will most definitely, due to an equally unexpected method, see the bottom. She smiles like she’s all that. As the doors open, she croons that again, she learned something from Abeoji today. As expected, something enjoyable is more fun when they watch it together. The reporters just want to talk to Cheok Hee this time.

As Soo Ah, Min Kyu and Abeoji walk away, Min Kyu declares that the courts lack any motivation for any change. But instead of meaning the trial, he says that he means the chair he was sitting in. Couldn't they change them to the ones with the cushions? He asks to be excused, since his back hurts. Abeoji grimaces and agrees. And I think Min Kyu’s up to something. He’s too smart to be such a fop.

Soo Ah watches him leave and then asks Abeoji why he’s going so easy on Min Kyu. Abeoji replies that only Min Kyu doesn’t realize it. She wonders what they’re going to do about the trial. Abeoji smiles and tells her that when you're climbing the Himalayas, the hardest thingisn’t the wind or the snow. It's the sand. One grain of sand inside your shoe rolls around, and then you can't think of anything else. When Soo Ah asks what he’s going to do, he replies that the sand that is Go Cheok Hee it needs to be extricated. Completely. So that it never gets in his shoes again.

Jung Woo has gone to yoga with Kyung. Now it’s Jung Woo who can’t let go of the stress. The yoga instructor tries to encourage Jung Woo to tell that person who stresses him that he loves her. Jung Woo tries but keels over instead, gagging. Later at home, his mother, yells at him for keeping his room a mess. She starts to throw away a fat book that has scorch marks from a fire and Jung Woo stops her. She grouses about the book holding a ‘good’ memory.

Mom sighs and makes a disapproving, telling him that garbage and memories.. he should quickly get rid of what you need to be rid of. So then other things can get in and he can be full of life! She punches him in the arm for emphasis. Aw, Mom. For all your grumpiness, you really care about your son. Mom grunts with frustration at Jung Woo and leaves the room. And I feel sorry for the guy, his shoulders all slumped like that. I wonder what the story is with the book? Jung Woo rubs his face and then looks at the book: Civil Law Teaching Materials. Meaningful, gentle piano music plays. He rubs the book affectionately and from his face, it obviously means something to him.

The next day, Hye Rin gets a text from Yoon Seong Hee Ae – whoever that is. She reads it and gasps: Daebak! Ma Dong Goo's video has been posted. Kyung takes a look: “Shocking! The nation’s as$hole, Ma Dong Goo's video.” He quickly starts to watch. Jung Woo hears them and feels terrible about what’s happening. Because he has a conscience. Hye Rin tells Kyung to pause the video. He thinks it’s because of the people. She wants to ogle the secretary’s purse. Jung Woo rolls his eyes. After a second – because I guess, Kyung is now looking at the purse – he wonders if the purse the same as the one that Ha Mi Ri was carrying. Something fishy is going on… Hye Rin thinks so, too, but her mind is not going where mine is going…

Hye Rin thinks and concludes that Ma Dong Goo has another woman. She’s certain of it. The *bag* in question, only 3 were imported, and on the day they came in, DK Electronics took them all. That means Ma Dong Goo bought them. Han Mi Ri got one. If the secretary has one as well, that means there is one left. Hye Rin smiles and wishes she was the lucky one. And is immediately rapped on the head by Cheok Hee. Cheok Hee grumbles at her that rather than just giving ankle monitors to rascals who sexually assaulted or kidnapped someone, they need to give shameless gold diggers ankle monitors and watch them. Heh.

Cheok Hee’s phone chimes. A text about the video. Cheok Hee looks at it and doesn’t feel bad at all about what’s happening. That’s all that Jung Woo can take for today. He sighs and announces that he’s going home. And I think his mood actually is bothering her. Cheok Hee follows him to the elevator and declares that he’s acting like she created the as$hole. As he looks at her, she asks him if she was the one who made Dong Goo have an affair. No response. She shrugs and says that Dong Goo became on as$hole on his own. Looking exhausted, Jung Woo declares that she didn't make him have an affair. She just executed him publicly. She is surprised at his words. Jung Woo sighs and says that he thinks what is bad as all bad – instead of shades of grey – not what is more bad. The elevator arrives. He respectfully bows and goes and she can’t believe he’s being like this.

Cheok Hee gets a call from ‘Appa.’ She smiles as she answers the phone. So I guess they have a good relationship. It looks like Appa is a fish monger; he’s wearing the yellow jumper that fish mongers wear and is standing in a market, making the call. He immediately tells her that that wrench, Mi Hee, went to Seoul. Mi Hee? Who’s Mi Hee? And apparently it’s bad, by Cheok Hee’s expression. Abeoji declares that Mi Hee wasn't satisfied with just ruining everything there and bleeding the shop dry. She went to Cheok Hee’s house! He tells her to go home immediately. Cheok Hee immediately hangs up and urgently presses the elevator button several times. Because that’s what we do when we want the elevator to come more quickly, we press the button again. Not like it’s going to call it any faster, but we still do it.

Cheok Hee quickly arrives home. She runs down the hall toward her apartment when she realizes that Mi Hee is standing by the elevator. That was closer to her apartment than the one she decided to take upstairs. Mi Hee looks when Cheok Hee calls her name. Then she turns back to the elevator and grimaces. Like a spoiled teenager who’s about to get a lecture (that she deserves). Cheok Hee’s eyes look misty as she asks Mi Hee to eat before she goes. Mi Hee turns to look at her and sighs. Like she’s put upon. She holds up lease agreement and says that she's only there to get Cheok Hee’s deposit money.

Cheok Hee doesn’t says anything. She gently reaches down and takes Mi Hee’s hand and caresses it, gently says that it’s been 3 years since they've seen each other. She should eat before she goes. Mi Hee shoves her hand away and bitterly tells Cheok Hee not to bother to pretend that she’s a good person. It's disgusting. Cheok Hee looks down as Mi Hee asks her whose fault it is that she’s living like this. Mi Hee screams, “Who is gone that I became like this?!” Why do I get the feeling this is about a cheating husband, and why Cheok Hee is on such a crusade against them now?

Cheok Hee can barely speak, but says that she’ll pay Mi Hee back, for the rest of her life. That's why Mi Hee should go after she eats. Mi Hee laughs with sarcasm and asks why she should. Meals are eaten with people you’re friendly with. To Mi Hee, Cheok Hee isn’t even family. Elevator comes and Mi Hee – who I think is Cheok Hee’s sister – gets on and glares at Cheok Hee as the doors close. A tear escapes and runs down Cheok Hee’s cheek. Then another. She slowly arrives at her apartment, which is trashed from Mi Hee going through all the drawers, looking for money. Appa calls and she lies about Mi Hee not coming to the apartment. Appa is relieved and urges Cheok Hee to quickly change her passcode.

Cheok Hee hangs up the phone and starts to clean up the mess. She pauses when she sees a picture of them with their mother on the floor. She caresses the photo and says to herself that at least Mi Hee left this.

Another day. Kyung is walking behind Cheok Hee as they enter a restaurant. He asks her if she forgot. She replies that she couldn’t, since it’s the day that Han Mi Ri will be winning in court. He corrects her and says that it’s Jung Woo’s birthday. He started reminding her a month ago. Cheok Hee wonders why she should have to care about Jung Woo’s birthday. He tells her that Jung Woo is one of her employees. She sighs with pained resignation.

Courthouse. Judge is reading the verdict. Cheok Hee and Mi Ri hold hands, hoping that it goes in Mi Ri’s favor. The judge declares that the couple will be divorced. Dong Goo will pay Mi Ri 5 million won and will give her   8,400,000,000 in assets. Cheok Hee looks over at Dong Goo, a little gloat on her face. Dong Goo hits the table with his fists in frustration and leaves without saying anything.

Afterwards, Cheok Hee is feeling pretty good. When Abeoji walks up, she starts to gloat. Abeoji just smiles slightly and asks whether she’s received the lawsuit yet. Oops. He’s about to get rid of that speck of sand. What lawsuit? Breaking and entering, assault, penalties for violation of the law. He reminds her that he already told her that she would be made to see the floor. He adds that she has to manage her employees better. He smiles again as the doors close.

Cheok Hee thinks back to that conversation she saw between Jung Woo and Soo Ah. She immediately believes that Jung Woo betrayed her. She returns to work, where Kyung is wearing a party hat and has put out a spread. She demands to know where Jung Woo is. Kyung shushes her and says that it’s supposed to be a surprise. He starts to mention that he invited someone, but Cheok Hee cuts him off, loudly demanding to know where Jung Woo is. Jung Woo arrives and asks if she’s looking for him. Cheok Hee picks up the bowl of seaweed soup on the table and throws it in Jung Woo’s face. They like to do that to him in dramas. Kyung cringes. Jung Woo is shocked and hurt.

Cheok Hee begins to lay into Jung Woo about betraying her. He can hardly speak when he asks if she’s suspecting him of something. She yells, asking how she can trust him. Jung Woo is really hurt. He pulls the seaweed off of his neck and looks down at the floor as she yells at him for not knowing his place. Just because he contributed to the case doesn’t give him the right to tell her how to do her job. He’s acting like he’s a lawyer but he’s nothing! Can he even take a case to court? Kyung points out that Jung Woo’s been working there for 3 years and it’s long enough to earn him a ranking position. In other words, he could become a lawyer if he decided to.

Cheok Hee responds, asking if Kyung has ever seen a village mutt become a master? A dog will always just be a dog for life. Oops. Mom has arrived and she is rightfully offended. She asks if Cheok Hee has lost her mind. And even now, Jung Woo is trying to watch out for Cheok Hee. He tells Mom to wait outside. Mom colorfully asks Cheok Hee who she thinks she is. Mom’s particularly mad because *she* made the soup that Cheok Hee threw in her son’s face. Jung Woo yells at Mom that he said to leave and Kyung herds Mom out the door. He tries to placate a yelling Mom.

Cheok Hee and Jung Woo are left alone. He walks over to her and says that her personality is difficult but he respected her competence. He wanted to learn from Korea's best divorce lawyer. But this is the total result of his 3 years here. He’s been her errand boy, protected this yard for three years. Bur if master still cannot trust him, then… He rubs his face, pained at her betrayal and nods. He declares that yes, this dog will leave. The pain is evident in his face and his voice.

Hye Rin arrives and starts singing ‘Happy Birthday.’ Kyung has returned and he cringes. Hye Rin is the only one singing. Jung Woo and Cheok Hee just look at each other. Hye Rin tells Jung Woo to make a wish as she holds the cake with lit candles. He closes his eyes and nods, then turns to look at the ‘Divorce is a blessing’ banner. He declares that Cheok Hee said living without having to see someone you hate is a blessing. He’s starting to get mad now. He laughs to himself bitterly and turns to look at her as he yells, “Until my last day in this world, I wish to never lay my eyes on this woman ever again!” Kyung has covered his face with his hands.

Jung Woo bitterly blows out the candles. Hye Rin is shocked. As he turns back to look at Cheok Hee, a tear is rolling down his cheek. Aw! I feel so bad for him. Jung Woo huffs and leaves. Cheok Hee huffs in response, not believing him, but clearly she is bothered by what he’s said and how he’s acted.

Cheok Hee goes home and as she walks away from her car, she’s still muttering about it. Of course, it’s him. She saw him talking to the opposing legal team with her own eyes. And someone grabs her. And it looks like Dong Goo’s hand.

The Han River. It was Dong Goo. Cheok Hee is sitting in the passenger seat, not bound. She declares that he really is the nation’s jerk. He’s resorted to kidnapping now? He asks Cheok Hee to help him reconcile with Mi Ri. He tries to offer her money to do it. She thinks that he’s just trying to get out of paying even more money to Mi Ri. He declares that it – the scene in the office – was a mistake. Cheok Hee laughs and says that a mistake is using sugar in place of salt. He replies that he’ll pay for his sins. If he can be forgiven, he'll pay any price for the rest of his life. Doesn’t she think that having to lose everything due to one mistake, is too harsh? And this is oddly similar to her conversation with Mi Hee except now the shoe is on the other foot. She replies that it’s not everything. Just all his wealth.

Dong Goo explains that he was stressed about the Jo Yoo Sang's scandal and just thinking about his wife being with Yoo Sang... She doesn’t say anything. Because she is hard-hearted. He asks her if she hasn’t made a single mistake in her life. And no, she’s still being hard-hearted. She replies that Han Mi Ri doesn't even want to hear him breathing. How can Mi Ri live with someone that she can't even stand to hear him breathing?

Dong Goo can see that he’s not getting anywhere and it pains him. He looks out at the river and asks her what she thinks is the most important thing for a person like him. Although unexpected, it's family. Cheok Hee doesn’t say anything.

Mom is meeting with Soo Ah. She’s there to present potential blind dates. Complete with pictures. Mom’s discussed the choices with Soo Ah’s mother. Soo Ah marvels at how Mom is trying to marry Soo Ah off to another guy, since she’s been saying Soo Ah should marry Jung Woo since they were 7. Mom replies that a friend told her that females laywers are like left over soup. The only people who will marry female lawyers are male lawyers. Soo Ah replies that she saw Jung Woo. She’s surprised that he was willing to see Soo Ah . She replies that it was a chance meeting. Mom wishes that the pair would have passed the bar together. She tells Soo Ah not to feel bad about Jung Woo avoiding her. It's not because he doesn't care but because he lacks confidence.

Soo Ah tells Mom that they should send Jung Woo to law school. Plus, he was better student than she was. Soo Ah says that it’s been four years since the accident and it's about time for the memory to have faded. Mom declares that she just saw the most terrible thing when I visited him at the office. If she had any money, she would've sent him to law school years ago. Soo Ah pulls a passbook out of her purse and slides it over to Mom. She says that if the only people who will marry female lawyers are male lawyers, then Mom should make him a lawyer so she can get married.

At the office, Kyung is drawing to try and cheer himself up. His first picture is of Chucky and his second is of a man sitting by a campfire crying. Cheok Hee arrives and almost slips on the seaweed left on the floor. Kyung quickly covers over his sketch pad. She almost looks concerned as she asks why he’s alone. He reminds her that Jung Woo quit the day before and it looks like Hye Rin has quit, too. Her phone is off.

Cheok Hee sighs and walks over to the desk where she spies a Don Varas bag. Kyung explains that Han Mi Ri was able to start working again. She sent Cheok Hee a gift. Cheok Hee puls out the bag and they both recognize it: It’s the designer purse Hye Rin was talking about. Cheok Hee quickly hurries over to the Don Varas boutique. She discovers that it wasn’t Dong Goo that bought all three bags, but Mi Ri. She only ordered one, but she bought all three to give them away as gifts to important people. The pieces start to fall into place that Mi Ri is a lying skank and a much better actress than anyone gave her credit for. Poor Dong Goo. Min Kyu arrives and sees Cheok Hee. She rushes from the boutique without so much as a word.

Cheok Hee hurries over to Mi Ri’s drama. Mi Ri is sitting there smiling at Jo Yoo Sang – the guy she was rumored to be having an affair with. The rumor of which caused Dong Goo’s impetuous mistake. Mi Ri explains that Cheok Hee is the lawyer that’s been helping her. Apparently they’re both now working on the drama. Yoo Sang leaves. Cheok Hee throws the very, very expensive purse on her counter – where a humidifier is going – and declares that Mi Ri bought the three purses, including the one the secretary had. Mi Ri calmly reapplies her lipstick, completely non-plussed. Mi Ri marvels that Cheok Hee figured it out. Too bad that attorney-client privilege prohibits Cheok Hee from saying anything.

Mi Ri declares that the three of them – Cheok Hee, the secretary and herself – are the same. Things who didn't have that much to begin with can get some money from those who have money. Why did Cheok Hee think that Mi Ri chose her, instead of a giant law firm. Mi Ri investigated her quite a bit. In the end, didn't Cheok Hee go that far to get her money? Cheok Hee protests that Mi Ri said that she didn't want any consolation money or child support, that she only wanted to raise the child. And melodrama dramatic music is playing. A little heavy-handed sound director.

Mi Ri dispassionately replies that when there's someone already carrying a knife and running wild, what's the point of her getting her hands dirty. Now, anything she desires, she can just hint at it with her eyes and it’s hers. An assistant announces they need Mi Ri on set. Smugly she bits Cheok Hee farewell. Cheok Hee can’t believe it.

Elsewhere, the scandal of the video is getting larger. They’re talking about it on the news. Dong Goo is in his office, looking out the window as a reporter declares that people have been boycotting against DK products, and commercials have stopped. His company is calling for him to step down. The citizens are angry at the immoral actions of the collapsing chaebol. His phone rings. It’s Cheok Hee. He doesn’t answer, just looks out the window.

Cheok Hee is desperately trying to reach Dong Goo. She arrives at his building and bursts into his office. The secretary is surprised because the office is empty and Dong Goo was just inside. The window is open. Sirens. Commotion. Dong Goo jumped.

At their law office, Abeoji asks Soo Ah if they appealed the decision. She did. And has Cheok Hee received the lawsuit? Min Kyu arrives and is shocked by the news of the suicide. He asks Soo Ah if she petitioned for an appeal. He exposits for the audience that if Cheok Hee received the petition then Dong Goo and Mi Ri aren’t legally divorced yet. Poor Cheok Hee won’t even get any money for winning.

Cheok Hee has returned to the drama. How she can just run around the set of a drama, I don’t know. And Mi Ri has just been served the papers from the family court. Mi Ri smiles because her scheme worked. Cheok Hee is horrified at what she helped happen.

Back at the office, Jung Woo’s words are ringing in her ears. There’s still that one percent possibility that Dong Goo isn’t a scumbag. She sighs because she should have listened. The phone rings. It’s the police, calling her to come to the station to be interviewed.

Three Years Later.

On the television, shot of Mi Ri on the red carpet as the reporter announces that Mi Ri’s been nominated for Best Actress at Cannes. Two women are grumbling about how Mi Ri never ages and her very expensive purse. The one from Don Vagas.

A man arrives and is greeted as Lawyer. We don’t see his face but pleasantly nods a greeting at the doorman. The two girls smile giddily and one declares that she feels like she’s going to get pregnant just by looking at him! Wow, that’s some potent virility. The other girl doesn’t know who he is and super-giddy girl is shocked that Girl2 doesn’t know ‘Mr. Dreamboat.’ The subs call him Pregnant Smile, but that is super terrible. So we’re going with Mr. Dreamboat. Not McDreamy. McDreamy died last week on ‘Grey’s.’ Mr. Dreamboat is the new lawyer on fifth floor! And we see that he’s very popular with all the ladies.

Jung Woo arrives at his office. Come on, you knew it was him, even if they haven’t shown his face yet. His secretaries tell him that he has an interview for the office manager position at 9 o'clock. The CEO is going to be a bit late, so he asked you to see her before he does. Then she puts a sugar cube into his waiting coffee cup, because Jung Woo has now become too important to do that.

Shoes. High heels. About the same height as what Cheok Hee wore. But, of course, we don’t see her face. Even though we know that it’s going to be Cheok Hee because of the very beginning of the episode, why are they bothering with this?

Woman is going to the Seon Taek (Choice) Law Firm, which specializes in divorce. And of all things, why *did* Jung Woo want to become a *divorce* attorney? My Mom got really cynical after working as one, because you see people at their most selfish. I’m not saying divorce is selfish, but people who hide their money and complain about having to pay $400 a month per child for 3 kids when he’s making $80,000 a year isn’t being generous. He should be paying $1,500 per kid.

Jung Woo is sitting at his desk. When his secretary announces that ‘she’ has arrived, he nicely calls for her to come in. In walks Cheok Hee. Of course. Jung Woo immediately jumps out of his chair and gives Cheok Hee a huge bow, noting that, “You came, Lawyer?” She’s no longer wearing the austere ponytail. She’s pleasantly declares that it’s been a while. He quickly offers her his desk. She sits and then it sinks in what just happened. And I had to rewatch that part because I can’t believe he just did that.

Cheok Hee asks him why he’s there. And his body language is entirely different. Very meek now. Confidence killer, Cheok Hee! He asks her why she’s there.

It’s starting to sink in that she might be there for the job… that he might be who she’s interviewing with. CEO arrives and enters and it’s Min Kyu. I guess he left Abeoji’s law firm and started his own. Cheok Hee is further surprised and she finally notices the name plate on the door:   Lawyer So Jung Woo. Shock and horror.

No one says anything. Min Kyu just smiles. He always liked her, anyway. And maybe he’s playing matchmaker… Dirty pool!

Preview: I am Lawyer So Jung Woo! He was a dog reciting poems in my yard. But you want me to work under him? In this office, the lawyer is me! And it looks like she isn’t winning any friends with anyone in the office.

Thoughts

Yay, I think I’m going to like this series. Although you knew it was going to happen, it already seems like Jung Woo was a little in love with Cheok Hee back then. Which means he really did love her because she was obnoxious. Very prideful. Which is a nice flip of the typical arrogant, rude guy and the Candy girl. Now it’s the arrogant, rude girl and the Candy boy who turned himself into a lawyer.

Things that We Know:

1. Cheok Hee is on good terms with her father but estranged from her sister. At least, I think the girl was her sister from the way that Dad was talking and the picture with Mom. The sister blames Cheok Hee for something.
2. Jung Woo is also with only one parent. We would have seen Dad if he still was alive. Plus, Mom wouldn’t have been talking like she was a single parent, if Dad was there contributing a paycheck. I wonder if that’s whose law book Jung Woo had.
3. Soo Ah and Jung Woo have known each other since childhood.
4. Min Kyu acts like he doesn’t care and he isn’t paying attention, when it’s really the opposite.
5. It’s right around Jung Woo’s birthday again, since it’s 3 years later.

Things I’m Wondering:

1. What caused the rift between Cheok Hee and her sister? I initially thought it might be breaking up Mi Hee’s marriage over a misunderstanding, but now I’m wondering if Cheok Hee didn’t somehow indirectly cause the accident which killed their mom.
2. Have Cheok Hee and Mi Hee made up since Cheok Hee’s fall from grace? I’m thinking not and this is going to be some source of drama for Jung Woo to help Cheok Hee out with and help her to see what a good man he is.
3. What kind of accident happened 7 years ago (4 years before 3 years ago). And I really hope that it’s not going to be the same accident as the one that did in Mother. Please, no makjang.
4. How did Min Kyu end up working with Jung Woo? Is Min Kyu no longer working for his father? Did Abeoji retire? It seems like it would be really unusual for a son to not work for his dad, especially when the firm is really successful and the family is rich.
5. Does Soo Ah have a thing for Jung Woo? Or is she interested in Min Kyu? And does this mean that she'll be working there, too, or is she still working for Abeoji?
6. I kinda wonder if Min Kyu might not develop an interest in Soo Ah, since in his indifferent facade he seemed to genuinely like her.
7. Can Cheok Hee, at some point, get her license back? It doesn’t look like she ratted on Mi Ri.
8. Is Mi Ri going to come back into the picture? And that obnoxious aunt?
9. How long is Jung Woo going to let Cheok Hee steal his confidence? I liked confident Jung Woo and he gets so sheepish in her presence.
