You're All Surrounded Episode 18 Recap

As I start to watch Episode 18, I am suddenly grateful that I put it off until today, because I will only have to wait until tomorrow to see what happens to resolve the cliff hanger. I will really miss this show and these characters! A Lot. A Ton. Couldn’t they get a 20 episode extension so that we can see romance and roommate hijinks?! And Pan Suk and Sa Kyung get remarried? Tae Il and *Gook* get a girl? And, of course, Dae Goo/Ji Yong and Soo Sun being happy together? Maybe just a Season 2? This is the second Lee Seung Gi series that I want a second season of (the other being ‘Gu Family Book’). And it’s totally do-able. So hear-me, drama gods! We need more ‘You’re All Surrounded’!!! Okay, on with the recap…

The episode starts with Dae Goo in the interrogation room with Ae Yun and Slimy. Dae Goo changes the question to ask Ae Yun who he resembles more: Shin Ji Il or Kim Hwa Young? He pulls out the photo of Ji Il and Hwa Young together and slides it across the table to where Ae Yun can see it. Ae Yun leans forward, staring at it with horror. Her breath starts to quicken and she glares at Dae Goo with hatred. The gang is watching her intently behind the glass.

Dae Goo leans back and crosses his arms. He says that on the day of the murder, she was at his house. There is a witness who saw her leave. Ae Yun keeps her mouth pinched shut. But her husband and his mother were pretty close twenty seven years ago. There’s a wince from Ae Yun. Dae Goo says that a year later, he was born. Is this a coincidence? Ae Yun’s chin juts out with anger. Dae Goo mentions how Ki Jae is quite familiar with him. Why does Ki Jae keep calling him "hyung" when no one told him to do that? Dae Goo chuckles and Ae Yun’s getting madder. Perhaps because they share a bloodline? She smacks the table, lunging at him, and screams, “Ya!” Dae Goo doesn’t flinch.

Slimy says that these questions don't seem to have a direct relationship with the case. Dae Goo asks Slimy if he’s sure and suggests they do a DNA paternity test to confirm whether Ji Il is Dae Goo’s father. Ae Yun sneers at that thought. Dae Goo leans forward and asks her if she’s scared and dislikes that idea, too. Dae Goo declares that the money that she and her father gathered by bloodying their hands – he holds up one of his for emphasis – is she afraid that it might be handed down to him? Ae Yun glares and shifts in her chair.

Dae Goo chuckles and remarks that he could have never imagined that he’s the son of Cha Sung Corporation. He never thought he would be so lucky! Dae Goo says that it turns out that Oma left him a huge present and without her, he would never have known. He sarcastically thanks her. Ae Yun hisses at Dae Goo, “You insect like creatures.” She declares that between him and his mother, the beggar mentality is the same. Dae Goo has no reaction.

Slimy tries to get Ae Yun to leave, but Dae Goo slaps the table and asks Ae Yun if that’s the reason she killed Oma. Because they might suddenly appear and take her wealth away? Softly, he remarks on how mad she must have been. She already lost her husband's heart and now she'd have to give away money. Dae Goo grabs that pen and pokes it at her, saying that 11 years ago, she definitely came to see Oma and discovered that he was still alive and growing up. Slimy tells him to stop!

Dae Goo declares that Oma was proud instead of being intimidated by her. Why? Because she had something that Ae Yun could never have. That pen is working overtime to emphasis every word. Ji Il's heart! She screams at him to shut his mouth and slaps the pen away. Slimy cries, “Madam!” Begging her to just go, but Dae Goo’s got her now… Dae Goo declares that that's probably what Ae Yun couldn't endure. How dare Oma talk back instead of begging on her knees? ‘Who does she think she is?! I'm Cha Sung's Yoo Ae Yun. How dare you look down on me!’ How dare someone who is just a school nurse and a single mother at that, disrespect Ae Yun just because she has Ji Il’s heart,?

Ae Yun shrieks at Dae Goo to shut his mouth! Does he also want to die at her hands?! Dae Goo doesn’t look away. The observation room reels at this *big* of a revelation. She just admitted killing Oma. Ae Yun shrieks that those kind of things – Wow, calling Oma a thing – deserve to die. What an impudent wretch! How dare Oma open her eyes widely! With a smile starting, Ae Yun gloats how Oma just collapsed when she was hit with the flower vase. Ae Yun declares that Oma deserved the punishment she got for not knowing her place! Slimy’s looking on in horror because she just confessed. On tape.

Dae Goo just looks at Ae Yun. Ae Yun sneers that Dae Goo and Oma are the same. Insect like creatures that act up without even knowing your place! A DNA test? She shrieks even louder with whose permission is he daring to suggest a DNA test?! Dae Goo takes a step backward and declares that Ms Yoo Ae Yun have just admitted to assaulting Kim Hwa Young. She has confessed that she is the prime attacker in the Masan School Nurse Murder case. It starts to sink in what she’s just done. And I am so enjoying the look on her face! Pan Suk puts his hand to his face in relief.

After a moment, Pan Suk, Soo Sun and Eung Do leave the observation room and enter interrogation. Pan Suk tells her that based on her confession and the evidence she provided, she is being arrested without warrant on the charge of assault. DramaFever translates it as manslaughter. Pan Suk has Soo Sun handcuff her. Soo Sun reads Ae Yun her rights. Ae Yun starts protesting. How dare Soo Sun touch her with her dirty hands? Let go of her immediately! She starts shrieking at Slimy, asking why he’s not doing anything, but Slimy’s too stunned to say anything. As Ae Yun’s dragged away, Slimy finally gets it together to run after her.

Pan Suk and Dae Goo are left in interrogation. Dae Goo finally lets himself cry a little. Pan Suk doesn’t say anything.

Dae Goo walks slowly down the street. Soo Sun is across the street, following him, watching him as he walks. Her face shows how bad she feels for him. Dae Goo stops at street corner. A bus stops and when it leaves, Dae Goo is gone. She hurries over to the corner to see if he’s really gone, but he isn’t. He’s a little way down the next street. They look at each other. She slowly walks toward him, trying not to cry. Then she goes to him to comfort him with a hug. They both sob and comfort each other. And I’m a little misty.

[Episode 18: Without Blood or Tears]

Moon Bae is sitting, fingers crossed. And I cackle with glee in anticipation of his reaction. Ji Il asks what was happening with Ae Yun. Moon Bae replies that it will be resolved without problem soon. He should should just focus on the shareholders' meeting. Ji Il says that he heard that she confessed. Did Ae Yun really hurt Kim Hwa Young? So I guess this is after Ae Yun’s blow up. Darn. I really wanted to see Moon Bae wig out. Ki Jae arrives in the background. Moon Bae doesn’t answer but tells Ji Il that the shareholders' meeting is around the corner. How can Ji Il be so distracted. There was nothing of that sort of thing. Ki Jae enters and asks what they’re talking about; is there something wrong with Mom?

Moon Bae declares that there's nothing wrong and tells Ki Jae to prepare to leave for the US. Ki Jae asks how Moon Bae can say there's nothing wrong. Just a while ago he talked about Mom hurting someone. Where is Mom right now? Neither one of them will make eye contact. Ki Jae demands Ji Il tell him where Ae Yun is.

Tae Il’s leaving the hospital. Yay, he’s better! He leaves his father a letter which says:
Dear Father,

It's been already 4 months since I began living as a detective. A detective is a more difficult job than I had thought. Not only do I have to fight with criminals, but I've also had to fight with my weak self several times.

Getting stabbed really hurt. But Father, the moment I got stabbed, instead of being afraid of dying, my fear of losing the criminal was much greater. ‘If I collapse here, will I be able to capture him again?’ ‘Will I be able to resolve the unfairness that the victim feels?’

Your son, Park Tae Il, is going after that criminal again. I will never die until I capture that criminal. As long as I live as Detective Park Tae Il, I will stay alive until the end.

It may be worrisome, but you don't have to worry. I'll be back, next time looking healthy.

Sincerely, your youngest son, Tae Il

As Tae Il boards the elevator, he sees some interns. He smiles because he doesn’t have to go through that anymore. Tae Il takes one last look around the hospital. Gook appears, runs to him and gives Tae Il a bear hug, which Tae Il squirms out of because of his healing stab wound. Gook immediately says sorry and grabs Tae Il’s bag. He puts Tae Il in a headlock as they leave.

Back at the apartment, the boys have put together a poster board relating to Oma’s crime. Gook give Tae Il something green to drink. It looks disgusting. Tae Il drinks some of it, pleasing Gook, but then he whines that he’d really like to each some cereal. I am laughing. Dae Goo grabs the cereal for Tae Il. The boys are ready with the bowl, spoon and milk. Gook calls Tae Il the king of the household and tells him to eat up. It’s so sweet!

Tae Il looks at the poster board and says that they just have to figure out who instigated Oma’s murder. Dae Goo declares that they definitely need to know who Detective Seo is to figure out that. He tries calling the detective who went to Brazil and the man answers. Dae Goo sets up a meet. He sends a message to Pan Suk that the Masan detective has returned. Since it was so sudden, he’s meeting the guy alone. Oops.

They greet each other and Dae Goo gives Joong Tak his card. Joong Tak asks if Dae Goo’s asking about the eyewitness account from 11 years ago. Joong Tak says that he already told Pan Suk all about it. Dae Goo tries to keep his reaction to a minimum as he clarifies that Joong Tak talked to Pan Suk. Joong Tak says that he told Pan Suk everything: that he relayed it to Team Leader Kang Suk Soon who is currently the Police Chief. Dae Goo has to repeat that, too; he’s saying that Chief received the note?

Pan Suk shows Eung Do the text and says that Dae Goo’s about to find out that the person who received the note was the Police Chief. Pan Suk is obviously concerned what to do. Outside the room, Dae Goo approaches. He grabs the door handle and starts to open it but stops when he hears Eung Do ask what they should do. Should they tell Dae Goo that Chief is Detective Seo? Before they can decide what to do, a shocked Dae Goo comes into the room. Pan Suk won’t look at Dae Goo.

Dae Goo demands to know what they’re talking about… That Chief is Detective Seo? Eung Do looks back and forth between Pan Suk and Dae Goo. Dae Goo asks if they’re suspecting Chief right now because she forgot a note? Is that why Pan Suk didn’t tell him that he met with Joong Tak? Eung Do starts to try to smooth feathers, but Pan Suk stops him. Pan Suk nods that it’s okay and Eung Do leaves the room.

Pan Suk sighs and looks over at Dae Goo, declaring that it's not just because of that. Dae Goo wants to know what else there is. Pan Suk says that he’s already confirmed everything. Dae Goo wants to know what Pan Suk confirmed. Did Chief say it with her own mouth that she's Detective Seo? Pan Suk looks at Dae Goo, pained, because this is going to hurt him a lot. Dae Goo says, “She didn't, right?” Pan Suk still isn’t confirming it, even though it’s the truth. He sighs.

Dae Goo asks how Pan Suk could suspect Chief? More than anyone, Pan Suk understands what she means to him! Pan Suk’s saying that the person who revealed his location to Boots is the woman who’s been like a mother to him for the past 11 years?! Pan Suk starts to talk but Dae Goo interrupts him. So who says that? That Chief is Detective Seo?! Pan Suk tells Dae Goo that he has to accept the fact that Chief is Detective Seo, so that they can discover the instigator behind the murder. Dae Goo sighs. Pan Suk says that he thinks that the instigator of the murder is not Yoo Ae Yun, but Yoo Moon Bae. The close relationship between Chief and Moon Bae is the evidence. Dae Goo declares that they should go talk to Boots. As long as Pan Suk suspects Chief, he won't believe her words, so they should try to get Boots somehow to talk. Poor Dae Goo. He’s trying so desperately not to believe this earth-shattering thing.

It’s an uncomfortable, silent car ride.

At the prison, they wait for Boots to appear. Dae Goo tells Pan Suk that when they find out from Boots exactly who Detective Seo is, Pan Suk will need to kneel down and apologize to me. Pan Suk sighs, because he knows what Dae Goo’s about to have to accept. Pan Suk wonders why Boots is taking so long. A guard arrives, looking uncomfortable. The guard declares that Boots has passed away. Pan Suk and Dae Goo are appropriately shocked. The guard says that it looks like a suicide, but they’re currently investigating. The guard doesn’t answer when Pan Suk asks why Boots would kill himself and quickly leaves.

Outside, Pan Suk and Dae Goo are reeling. Dae Goo mutters, “Are you joking right now?” He says that he’s uncovered something and was getting close, this is how Boots stabs him in the back? Boots is dead? Then how are they going to reveal who Detective Seo is? And how are they going to prove the instigator behind the murder? Are you playing games with him right now?! By the end, he’s screaming. Pan Suk just stands next to him, not saying anything.

Gangnam Police Station. Soo Sun is waiting for them. She asks why Dae Goo didn't pick up the phone. A stunned Dae Goo asks if she called. Soo Sun says that some mail came, sent by Boots. They quickly open the envelope. Inside is a key and a note which reads, “Seoul Station, locker number 104, Kiddo, it's a gift.” The three of them start running for the car, with Pan Suk leading the way.

At the station, the boys make a beeline for the lockers, with Soo Sun trailing behind. She accidentally collides with a woman *wearing a ball cap, hoodie, long-sleeved shirt over the hoodie, and sunglasses.* Soo Sun tells the woman an apology and the woman says nothing but keeps walking. Really? That wasn’t at all suspicious to you?

The boys arrive at the station, but there’s nothing in the locker. Pan Suk kicks the lockers in frustration. Soo Sun can’t believe that Boots would play a joke on them like that. They go and look at the CCTV footage. And guess who took the stuff out of the locker? The person that Soo Sun collided with. You really didn’t think she was at all suspicious, Soo Sun? Really? Soo Sun realizes that it’s the person she collided with. But she calls him a man. She moans how, if they had just been a little faster, they could have caught him. But how did this guy know to go look there today of all days?

Silver van arrives at a location. Sa Kyung and her lead detective and Tae Il and Gook get out of the van as we hear: Name: Lee Joon Ho. A star instructor at a famous language institute; he suddenly disappeared 2 days before his contract renewal. There were some conflict recently between him and the owner over recruiting. Sa Kyung and the others spread out to search the location, weapons drawn. Voice over states that Joon Ho’s family believes that he’s been kidnapped, instigated by the institute owner. The kidnapper could be a professional gun man, so the need to use extreme caution.

Sa Kyung and Tae Il are together. They come across Joon Ho bound. The men holding him are telling Joon Ho to stamp his new contract. Gook arrives and hurries over to their position. Watching him walk like a frog was priceless. Tae Il looks in and sees one of the thugs smack Joon Ho. Then we get a better look at him. As they try to force Joon Ho to stamp the contract with his thumb, Tae Il recognizes the pair. He tells Gook that they are the ones who stabbed him and took the pendant. Sa Kyung looks at Tae Il, concerned, but he nods that he’s okay.

Thugs finally get Joon Ho’s thumbprint on the contract. Sa Kyung and the boys rush in, telling everyone to put their hands up and not move! Thug1 looks at Tae Il and recognizes him. Tae Il tells him that it’s good to see him again, especially since Tae Il was trying so hard to find him and couldn't. Detective Oh comes in (Sa Kyung addresses him as such) and he and Sa Kyung help Joon Ho stagger towards the car.

Gook asks if these are the bastards who stabbed their Tae Il? Thug2 has been holding a 2x4. He throws it at Gook, causing him to drop his gun. Thug1 lunges at Tae Il and knock Tae Il’s gun loose. Sa Kyung and Gook take off after Thug2 while Tae Il and Thug1 duke it out. Tae Il declares that he won't be defeated twice! Thug1 doesn’t believe him, but Tae Il is able to dodge anything Thug1 throws at him and quickly gets him in a hold where the cuffs can be put on. Tae Il reads Thug1’s rights. And right after the cuffs are on Sa Kyung kicks Thug2 through the door. Holding her gun on Thug2, she tells Gook to cuff him.

Moon Bae angrily slaps a table and screams, “What is this you're talking about now?! A police officer on duty was stabbed by a knife?” Slimy states that he was barely making the point saying that Ae Yun’s confession itself is not a strong enough evidence. Really? On what planet? They have circumstantial evidence plus the confession and Ae Yun’s tirade about Dae Goo being a pathetic insect. What jury isn’t going to convict her? Slimy adds that the thugs have now been caught and they confessed right away that Ae Yun had hired them. On top of the assault charges for 11 years ago, this incident has been added on. Slimy says that it seems like Ae Yun will be indicted right away. Moon Bae can’t believe it and winces in anger, slapping the table again and groaning.

Next we hear is a laugh from Eung Do, whose mouth is full of food. He marvels how there is always a way out. Thanks to those criminals they captured, Ae Yun can finally be indicted. And Soo Sun needs to get Mom on the phone to add her charges to the list! It hasn’t been a year! Gook says that he was anxious that she might be released due to lack of evidence, because she could always reverse her confession. But this sticks it to her! Yes! Eung Do tells them to eat up. It looks like they are at Subway again. Tae Il asks about Dae Goo and Soo Sun. Eung Do says that the pair are crazy about finding the person who robbed the locker. They can't think of food or anything else right now.

Switch to Soo Sun and Dae Goo in the conference room, working. Soo Sun’s watching CCTV footage. Ji Il arrives, looking for them. He apologizes for the interruption and asks to speak with Dae Goo for a moment. What’s he going to say? Dae Goo’s dreading this conversation almost as much as I am. I really hope he’s not there to plead for mercy for Ae Yun. Ji Il walks out of the conference room like he expects Dae Goo to follow him. Dae Goo announces that he’ll go out for a little while and follows.

They go to an empty conference room – the one where Chief meets with all the detective heads. Why they couldn’t have just stayed in the other conference room and Soo Sun left, I don’t know. After closing the door, Dae Goo asks what Ji Il wants. Ji Il says he doesn’t know what to say. He really couldn't have imagined this. Even though she’s really obnoxious, it’s hard to imagine someone murdering someone… That his wife could have committed such atrocious crime against Oma. Ji Il asks Dae Goo if he would agree to a paternity test. Ji Il looks really vulnerable as he’s talking.

Dae Goo asks why Ji Il wants the test, since Ji Il said he had no relationship with Oma. Ji Il sighs and says he’s sorry. When Dae Goo came to him with the picture, he was too flustered. Dae Goo calls Ji Il “President Shin” and says that the reason he went to see Ji Il isn't to check what their relationship is, but to know the motive for Ae Yun killing Oma. Ji Il just calmly looks at Dae Goo as he’s talking. Wow, they are alike in that. Dae Goo says that if there is any biological relationship between them, then there couldn't have been a more concrete murder motive than that. Regardless of whether it's true or not, Ae Yun has confessed to murder because that very reason.

Dae Goo declares that his curiosity ended there, too. You are lying, Dae Goo. Ji Il still has no reaction to Dae Goo’s words. Dae Goo declares that there is absolutely no reason for him, Mr. Shin Ji Il, and Dae Goo to be connected together. There will never be a reason for them to determine their biological relationship in the future. Ji Il blinks and it looks like he’s about to cry. Dae Goo says goodbye and starts to leave. Ji Il pipes up, saying that even if that’s so, if Dae Goo’s really his son, shouldn't he take certain responsibility? Dae Goo answers, asking whether Ji Il really wants the test so he can take some responsibility, or because he really wants to be absolved of the possibility. Ji Il doesn’t know how to respond to that one, because that’s really harsh. Ah, Ji Il, you’ve got Pan Suk’s dilemma. You two should talk. Dae Goo says that he’s saying it again, he respectfully declines. Dae Goo bows and leaves. Ji Il starts to cry.

Soo Sun finds Dae Goo in the stairway. She asks if that person left. He’s that person, isn't he? Dae Goo grunts a “yes.” Dae Goo sits on the stairs and declares that he needs comforting. I’m loving this Dae Goo. He’s just real. Soo Sun goes and hesitantly sits beside him. Silence. After a moment, Soo Sun tells Dae Goo to promise her that he won’t make fun of her. He looks at her as she declares that she, too, needs courage to do this. Dae Goo doesn’t respond so she tells him to hurry. He promises. They look at each other.

Soo Sun reaches over and takes Dae Goo’s hand. They look at each other. Soo Sun reaches over and starts to unbutton his shirt. Dae Goo grabs her hands to stop her, calling her Soybean Powder, but she tells him to just stay still for a moment. He holds still, but he’s really freaked out that she hasn’t given him any warning. Soo Sun opens his shirt enough that where his heart is, is uncovered. She pulls out a bandaid in the shape of an X and puts it on Dae Goo’s chest and then blows on the spot like there’s a boo-boo. And I’m a little misty. She tells him that when she was young, she fell down a lot. So every time, her dad would put on a medicine, blow on it and put on a bandage. She would get better quickly and go out and play again. It's so sweet!

Dae Goo lets that sink in and Soo Sun asks him how he is. It helps a little, doesn't it? He nods and she smiles. He looks back at the bandage. He asks if he can ask a question… Isn’t she embarrassed? Why are you teasing her, Dae Goo? She looks down and says that she is. He starts to laugh. She laughs too. He touches his heart, where the bandages are, and she fans herself a bit.

Pan Suk walks with a box. It’s labeled Seoul Prison. We see a guard walk by and discover Boots hanging. The guard told Pan Suk that the prison finished the autopsy, and it was determined to be a suicide. In the box are the things that Boots left behind. Boots had no family, so the guard called Pan Suk instead. Pan Suk looks at Boots’s few things, including another manila envelope and sighs. His friend ended like this.

Pan Suk and Eung Do arrive at the address on the manila envelope (It read From Large-scaled Errand Center, Jo Dal Bong.) Eung Do thinks they must have been close if Dal Bong sent things to Boots. Pan Suk has no idea. This is the only clue that came out of the stuff Boots left behind. Inside they speak with Dal Bong who says that Boots worked there briefly in the past and a few months ago, he came back in looking for work. He barely had worked there because he got arrested. Pan Suk asks what Dal Bong sent Boots. A couple of books and some food, nothing too special. Eung Do asks if Boots left anything with Dal Bong. Nope. Dal Bong says that Boots kept to himself, so he has no idea what Boots went around doing. Pan Suk sighs and puts his face in his hands a minute.

Walking out of the Errand Center, Pan Suk notices the license plate: 31소 0723. He remembers the writing on the back of the photo Boots had given him: the number 0723. This can’t be a coincidence. Pan Suk asks if it’s Boots’s car. No, it’s Dal Bong’s. But Boots used it for a few days. He was planning on getting rid of it, but Boots asked to use it. Pan Suk asks how long it’s been sitting there. Dal Bong doesn’t know. Boots only drove it a few times because it’s such a clunker. Dal Bong laughs. Pan Suk notices a camera inside the car.

Soo Sun runs into Chief in the bathroom. She gets a whiff of Chief and realizes that it’s the same perfume as the person from Seoul Station. And I am not surprised. I *thought* it was a woman. But how did Chief know it was there? Soo Sun goes back to her desk and sits. Dae Goo is looking at the CCTV footage again. He gets up to splash water on his face. Soo Sun watches the footage again. She takes a zoomed in picture of the footage with her phone. Later she looks at various footage of Chief. It’s the same sunglasses. Dae Goo finds her and is startled. She tries to stand in front of the screen so he can’t see, but Dae Goo sees it. He asks Soo Sun what she’s doing. Soo Sun squirms as she says that there was a strong scent coming from the guy she ran into at the Seoul Station. It’s too similar to the scent coming from Chief. She reminds him about her dog nose (a keen sense of smell). He asks her if she’s suspecting Chief because of similar smells. She shows him the zoomed in footage, compared with the footage of Chief. Soo Sun says that she doesn’t know the reason either, but it’s definitely Chief, right. Dae Goo can’t believe what he’s seeing.

Dae Goo heads to Chief’s office and enters without knocking. He doesn’t want to believe what he knows is true. Chief smiles and asks what brings him there. He asks if she siphoned an item Boots left in Seoul Station, locker #104? Chief blinks several times because for answering no and asking what he’s talking about. Dae Goo says that he checked the video, and it was her disguised, but the sunglasses were the same. Chief stops smiling and says she doesn't know what he’s talking about.

Dae Goo woodenly suggests that Chief accompany him to check the footage. She doesn’t move. They look at each other and Dae Goo asks her why she did it. Why did she take the item that Boots left behind? Is she really the Detective Seo that they’ve been looking for? Desperate, she answers, “No, Dae Goo-ya.” Dae Goo’s starting to get upset, because he knows she’s lying. He asks again if she’s really Detective Seo? She asks who said such a thing? It's not true. Did Pan Suk say that, that she’s Detective Seo? Chief starts to paint Pan Suk as the bad guy. Wrong move. Chief says that Pan Suk said strange things the last time they spoke and made her confused. Dae Goo just looks at her, his heart breaking. Because this means that she’s the one who sent Boots to kill him when he was 15.

Chief looks at Dae Goo and asks if he believes Pan Suk more than he believes her? She said she’s not. Dae Goo’s not looking at her anymore. She asks him if he believes her. Dae Goo asks why she took Boots’s stuff. She should explain so that he can understand. It’s so pitiful watching this. He repeats her name, pleading. She can’t answer. His face ripping my heart with how pathetic it is because his heart is breaking… Dae Goo says that she’s really Detective Seo, isn’t she? Chief’s mouth flaps open and shut but nothing comes out. Dae Goo adds, “Right?” Again Chief said that she said she’s not.

Dae Goo asks Chief how she could do something like that? Chief’s face can’t hide the truth anymore. The person who told Boots where he was in order for Boots to kill him was her? He’s starting to cry. Chief desperately says that she’s not! Dae Goo just looks at her, heartbroken. Chief says, a little above a whisper, that at first, she was going to just take the pendant. Dae Goo’s shoulders drop. He’s crushed. Dae Goo stands there, trying to hold himself up. He blinks rapidly and tears run down his cheek as Chief tells him that she did it because he said that everything will be resolved if the evidence was missing. She doesn’t say who ‘he’ is. That’s the truth.

Chief says that she couldn't imagine that that act would oppress her for this long and give her such agony. She could have never fathomed it. Desperately, she declares that she had no choice! Police Commissioner Yoo Moon Bae was pushing for independent investigation rights at that time. They had public support. Just when it felt like things were starting to happen, such an unlikely incident happened. Chief is crying now. Dae Goo’s just looking at her, his face dead. Chief says that if it came out that Moon Bae’s daughter was involved in a murder case, Commissioner Yoo's career would have been decimated, and the future of the police would have been destroyed as well! How... how could she turn down that offer?

Chief’s desperate for Dae Goo to give her a pass on this. She tells him that he can understand how she felt now that he’s detective, right? Dae Goo’s voice breaks as he weakly asks her if she’s giving him that as an explanation? Chief swallows hard and desperately says that she didn't know that Commissioner Yoo wanted to kill him. She tells him that it’s true! He has to trust her. Really? You just said that? Chief says that if she’d have known, how would she have revealed Dae Goo’s location so cavalierly, huh? Dae Goo puts his face in both hands and wipes away his tears. He can’t look at her anymore.

Chief brings up how the congress will soon hold a special committee meeting. Moon Bae said that he will get results in amending criminal legislation so we have investigative independence. Chief declares that she rallied for so long with that as the only goal in mind. She smiles at the thought of finally reaching her goal. She begs Dae Goo to wait just a little. She tells him that in just few short days, she will put everything down and pay for her crimes.

A heartbroken Dae Goo asks Chief why she sponsored him. Was it her intention to use him from the beginning? That was why she found him and supported him, even though he’d changed his name? Chief desperately shakes her head no and says that it wasn’t like that. As time went by, Chief says she really became fond of him, sincerely liked him. She sincerely wanted to protect him. She’s about to start weeping, because she wants him to know that. More tears flow from Dae Goo’s eyes as he shakes his head. She’s telling him to believe that now? Chief can barely talk as she pleads that she swears that it’s the truth.

Dae Goo tells Chief that for the past 11 years, she has been like a mother to him. She should just have said it wasn't her. He yells at her that she should have said it wasn't her until the end! Then... Dae Goo chokes on his words – then he would at least believe her. Dae Goo staggers out of Chief’s office and she weeps. Dae Goo walks past Soo Sun, absolutely dead.

Moon Bae shoves a contract and pen at Ji Il and demands that he sign. Moon Bae declares there is no other way for now. Ji Il looks at the paper. Ji Il is shocked by the document. Moon Bae asks what else could he do? Assault and murder instigation. Ae Yun even ordered a detective to be stabbed. Wow, he’s throwing her under the bus. Ji Il still can’t believe it as Moon Bae declares that the shareholder meeting isn't too far off, and the situation is that the primary share holder is being held in a detention center for violent criminal acts. Does Ji Il think there's any other option?

Ji Il looks at the paper again. Moon Bae declares that this all happened because of Ji Il. Really? Not because Ae Yun is an entitled rich witch who thinks she can treat people however she chooses? If you hadn’t bailed her out of EVERY SINGLE THING that she did that broke the law, she wouldn’t have felt entitled to bash Oma’s head in. She wouldn’t have thought of Oma as an insect to be crushed. Moon Bae asks how long they are going to pretend ignorance? Moon Bae tells Ji Il to hurry up and sign.

Dae Goo is dejectedly sitting in the park on a bench. I’m really surprised he hasn’t slumped over onto the ground with how he looks. Soo Sun is watching from a distance. Gook and Tae Il arrive. Tae Il asks what she’s doing and why Dae Goo is like that. Gook asks if there’s something wrong? Soo Sun says that Dae Goo found who went to the locker to steal the item. They want to know who it is. Soo Sun says that they found the person, but Dae Gu was shocked by who it is. That's why he's just sitting like that.

Ki Jae walks up to a slumped over Dae Goo and stands in front of him. He looks like he has a beef with Dae Goo. His face looks like it, too. Dae Goo looks up to see who it is. He sighs and asks Ki Jae what he wants. Ki Jae asks if Chung Chun Man is really his hyung. Ki Jae declares that he’s dumbfounded. He called Dae Goo ‘Hyung’ and followed him around… Is he really are his Hyung? Dae Goo sighs and says that he’s working so Ki Jae should just go away. Dae Goo shoves himself off the bench and tries to leave, but Ki Jae grabs Dae Goo by the hair, demanding to know where Dae Goo is going. It’s so awesome, I watched it twice!

The rest of the gang rush over to help Dae Goo, since Ki Jae still has a hold of Dae Goo’s hair as he asks if Dae Goo is his Hyung or what? What is he? Who is he? The gang are able to wrench them apart and Dae Goo grabs Ki Jae’s shirt like he’s going to punch Ki Jae. They glare at each other. Then he shoves Ki Jae loose and tells Ki Jae to get lost. Dae Goo’s going to let him go this once since it's not Ki Jae’s fault for being born as Ae Yun’s son. But don't ever look for him again! Ki Jae spits back that he doesn't want to see Dae Goo, either! Eat and live well! He shoves past Dae Goo and walks off, slapping a bush as he goes.

Ki Jae takes the hair he pulled out of Dae Goo’s head and puts it in an evidence bag. So I guess there’s going to be a DNA test, since you have to have hair that’s been pulled out in order to test for paternity.

Ae Yun is pacing in her cell. A guard arrives and declares that her sentence has been delivered. Meaning that they’ve granted her bail. She should step out, please. Ae Yun looks smug, like she knew it would get taken care of and she wouldn’t have to do any time. Ae Yun saunters out of the jail. The guard closes the door behind her. And no one is there. She can’t believe that no one is there. A hospital van arrives. Three men get out and grab her. She screams at them and the orderly tells her to calm down or she’ll get hurt. She shrieks at him, asking if he wants to die. Does he know who she to treat her like this?! Orderly holds up that paper Moon Bae wanted Ji Il to sign and declares that according to Article 24 of Mental Health Act, "Mental Patient Deportation Agreement," this is a lawful procedure that is taking place with the family’s permission. They should discuss the details once they get to the hospital? Ae Yun sees Moon Bae and Ji Il’s signatures. Ae Yun can’t believe Moon Bae did this. They drag her screaming into the van. Trank her! Trank her!

Moon Bae is on the phone, telling someone that he understands. He will put in a call into the hospital separately. He hangs up and sighs.

Chief bursts into Moon Bae’s office and demands to know what the article in the paper means: “Independent police investigation, still premature. Agenda eliminated from special committee.” Chief asks how the committee agenda could exclude independent investigation rights?! Moon Bae innocently replies that if predominant opinion calls it premature, what could he possibly do? The decision is made at the special committee. Chief knows he's full of crap. She says that there’s still 2 days remaining. Moon Bae declares that he did his best. Chief huffs that that best is quite flimsy. She demands that he put it back on the agenda within 2 days, NO MATTER WHAT!

Moon Bae calls her Detective Seo and asks why she hasn't changed at all since your thoughtless 20's? Is this the kind of business that can be accomplished by throwing a tantrum? Chief hisses that she has withstood every day for the past 27 years, waiting for investigative freedom. After that day 11 years ago, the strength to withstand the hellish degradation and the guilty conscience came from the possibility of criminal legislation being amended. After all this time, is he saying it can't be done? Moon Bae just gives her his sourpuss face and tsks. Chief says that if that's how he’s going to be, she has no choice but to take him to that day of change by force.

And now Chief is stupid. Chief tells Moon Bae that before Boots’s death, he left an item for Kim Ji Yong. It’s now in her possession. Moon Bae asks if she’s threatening him right now? Without showing him proof of what it is? Chief replies that she knows him too well to do that. And be that stupid. Chief mentions that, by the way, there seems to be a side to this story different than what she knows. She sputters that she mistook him by the leaps and bounds, to the point where she’d like to cut off her impudent tongue that promised to trust him! And now I’m starting to feel really grossed out at the thought that Moon Bae might be Dae Goo’s date and that Dae Goo is the product of a rape… Uck!

Moon Bae hisses Chief’s name, his eyebrows psycho. How da-da-dare she... She slaps his desk and tells him to do whatever it takes, but it needs to be put back on the special committee’s agenda! This is his last chance. If he can't make it happen, Moon Bae and she and Moon Bae’s "distinguished" daughter can all die together! She bows and leaves. He grunts and slams his hand down on his desk with frustration. He gets on the phone and viciously tells the person to carry out his instructions.

Outside Moon Bae’s office, in the parking lot, Chief pounds a car with frustration and screams. She’s weeping with frustration. She doesn’t see by Soo Sun and Dae Goo are watching. Soo Sun wonders why Chief did what she did? It’s safe to say that this is connected to Moon Bae, right? Soo Sun worries that perhaps Chief turned it over to Moon Bae already? Dae Goo replies that he doesn’t think so because she went up to see Moon Bae empty handed. If it was such an important item, there’s no reason to hand it over that easily either.

Chief gets into her car and drives off. Dae Goo follows her. Chief is really emotional as she drives. She doesn’t notice them. Suddenly, as Chief goes through and intersection with a green light, a dump truck runs into her car, forcing it off the road and into a ditch. It’s obvious that the driver didn’t even try to stop. Dae Goo and Soo Sun rush from their car to Chief’s car. Chief got thrown from the car. Dae Goo says her name. Chief tries to speak, but spits up blood more than once. He begs her to hang in there, holding her hand. She struggles and tells Ji Yong that she’s sorry. Crying, Dae Goo begs her not to die. She struggles to breathe and tells him that the the re-co-cor-der i-s in her roo-room... Then she dies. I felt a little sick to my stomach listening to her gurgle. Dae Goo weeps, hugs her and cries ‘No!’ as the episode ends.

Thoughts

Undae! No! Wow, what an episode. Our last two episodes are going to be devoted to taking Moon Bae down. Poor Chief is dead. It’s terrible especially because Dae Goo is never going to totally get to resolve things with her. There’s going to be that lingering question of whether she really did care or if he was just her pawn. I think Pan Suk will help with that, but it will niggle at Dae Goo from time to time.

Speaking of relationship, Dae Goo and Soo Sun’s relationship had some really nice moments in it this week. She was there for him, to hold him and cry with him after Ae Yun’s interrogation. She was there to comfort him after Ji Il came to visit. She was there to support Dae Goo when he lost his second mom. She could have hidden the truth, because she knew it would hurt him, but she knew that he needed the truth more. And she supported him in his quest to get the truth about Moon Bae and Chief’s relationship, as well as the location of whatever Boots left him.

I love the family that has developed with this team. It's evident when any one of them is hurt, how they band together to take care of their wounded, period. I would like Gook to come to terms with the fact that Dae Goo and Soo Sun are dating. And Dae Goo needs to take her out on an actual DATE. I love that their relationship is such that they are vulnerable with each other: like Dae Goo saying that he needs to be comforted, his requesting that she do it. He could have moped and hoped that she’d initiate it, but he’s comfortable enough with her to tell her what he needs and I love that. I think the only reason they haven’t declared their relationship yet is because of Soo Sun. She’s the one that’s hesitating. But I think that’s because she still doesn’t quite get that Dae Goo thinks even her bird-brained moments are awesome. They might annoy him, but he still thinks that she’s awesome, regardless.

Several major things happened this episode:
  1. Dae Goo broke Ae Yun to where she confessed. I know I said this before but I LOVE that Dae Goo totally broke Ae Yun so that she CONFESSED. Not just implicated herself, but confessed. And threatened him, to boot!
  2. Dae Goo found out that the person that got rid of Soo Sun's witness statement was Chief. He didn't want to believe it, but the way that he argued with Pan Suk shows real growth in their relationship. Even as he was arguing, Dae Goo it was the truth.
  3. Boots was murdered. I really don't believe that he committed suicide, but that's what the coroner concluded. That's sad for Pan Suk because Boots is his friend and for Dae Goo because Boots had answers
  4. The reason for the writing on the back of the picture -- 0723 -- it's a license plate with more clues for Pan Suk. Boots was clever. I'm going to miss him.
  5. Dae Goo found out that Chief is Detective Seo. That she stole the pendant and gave Boots his location at the school. So horrible to see him so downtrodden and destroyed by losing a mother for the second time.
  6. Ji Il acknowledged that Dae Goo could be his son and asked for a paternity test. I really hope that Moon Bae doesn’t turn out to be the culprit. I will punch the screen if they pull that one out. I want Dae Goo to be a hyung and a son to people who really care for him and I think that Ji Il and Ki Jae both do already. Please don’t be gross! Make Ji Il the dad, so that Dae Goo can get a hug from his dad. I *love* the fact that Ki Jae pulled him by the hair! Even if it was to get some for DNA testing, I can see him doing it to Dae Goo some other time and them wrestling like brothers do. I think Dae Goo needs that kind of relationship, someone to wrestle with.
  7. A paternity test is actually going to happen. Ki Jae pretends to be all innocent. He's actually really conniving. But he got the hair, so now for the test.
  8. Crucial evidence -- that Chief seems to have watched -- was discovered, but has yet to be looked at
  9. Moon Bae showed his true colors: no item on the agenda, committing his own daughter to save his own hide and his money, ordering the hit on Chief. The only reason he hasn't gone after Dae Goo is that it would be too suspicious. It's scary to see how far he has strayed from the tree, how corrupt he's become. He didn't just end up like this overnight. 27 years ago, he seemed like he still had some principles. I still am a little shocked that Moon Bae threw Ae Yun under the bus like that, but being committed is exactly what she needs. She needs therapy to work through her issues. People are not bugs. The way she acts and treats them is not acceptable. She *wasn't* crazy when she did any of her actions; she knew right from wrong, it just didn't apply to *her.* I really want to see her thrown in a criminal asylum until such a time as she is deemed fit to serve a normal sentence. But she needs to serve the normal sentence.
I am really glad that I only have to wait until tomorrow to see what Boots left! I’d love it if we took out Moon Bae in the next episode, so that the last one can just be fun.
