You're All Surrounded Episode 17 Recap

Yay! Tae Il made it through surgery! The episode starts with a sleeping Tae Il, cut on his nose, split lip, and huge bandage on his left cheek from where he got stitches. The team is waiting for him to wake up, with Gook sitting by his side. Like a good pah-te-nuh should. Dae Goo is with them. So he didn’t go after Ae Yun. Good. Gook adjusts Tae Il’s hair as he anxiously waits. Gook wants them dead for what they did to Tae Il and to Tae Il’s face! Eung Do reminds Gook that Heaven helped Tae Il; if the knife had gone in half a centimeter more, he would have been in big trouble. That is really fortunate! I was worried there, because his mouth was all bloody and that usually happens when you’re bleeding in your lungs. Pan Suk is standing beside Eung Do and he does not look happy that someone hurt one of his kids.

Gook takes comfort in what Eung Do said. He wonders what they should do now that the pendant is gone. It doesn't mean they have to stop the investigation, does it? Soo Sun declares that will never happen. They also have a witness. With gravity, Dae Goo declares that they definitely will catch them. They’ll make sure that what's left of their lives will be spent rotting in prison.

Tae Il starts to wake up. Even before he opens his eyes, Tae Il tries to get out of the bed. After Eung Do calls him a punk, Tae Il answers that his mind is fine. Everyone breathes a collective sigh of relief, except for Gook, who starts yelling at Tae Il for being so dumb! Once they took the pendant, he should've just given up after they took the pendant. Why did he have to chase after them, so they could stab him. And then… instead of leaving it alone, he grabbed a hold of the guy’s leg to get hurt even worse? Gook calls Tae Il punk more than once. He must be really mad and Gook never really gets mad. Once he’s done yelling, Gook corrects himself and tells Tae Il that he did well. Eung Do chimes in that that is being a detective. He declares that he is proud of their Tae Il-i.

Dae Goo gently asks if Tae Il is really all right. Tae Il says that he is. Tae Il asks what he can do, when he feel so sorry about losing the pendant. Dae Goo’s eyes are red as he clucks at Tae Il for saying that. Soo Sun and Gook chime in and tell Tae Il that he shouldn’t be talking like that.

Pan Suk and Eung Do leave the hospital room. Eung Do’s still amazed how Heaven helped Tae Il. Then he remembers. He asks Pan Suk if Chief came. Pan Suk tries not to react with how he’s feeling about Chief’s betrayal. He sighs heavily and keeps walking. Eung Do follows. Wise thing. Dae Goo might overhear and they just barely kept him from going after Ae Yun.

Dae Goo and Soo Sun are walking. She announces that they’re there, her new building. Dae Goo asks how it is. Keep that conversation going – not that they were talking before – so Soo Sun doesn’t have to go upstairs. She answers that since it's a new building, it's clean, and there's a window. Dae Goo nods and looks at the building. There’s a pause. Since they can’t think of anything else to talk about. Soo Sun takes Dae Goo’s hand. He looks down at it as she tells him to go home, not think about anything and just sleep. He smiles and looks back at the hand that he’s now holding. Then he looks at her as he says what she’s asking is a difficult task for him. But he promises to try anyway. You could always go over and read a story to him until he falls asleep. He sleeps well when he falls asleep with you talking.

Soo Sun tells him to get going. He looks at the hand. He doesn’t want to let go. They’re too cute! After a moment, he nods – probably thinking that he can always hold it later – and tells her to go inside. He walks away and she watches him go.

Next day, at the police station, Toad is tossing around something (salt maybe?) and muttering, telling the bad spirits to go away. He mutters that the energy is bad, bad! Makjang (messed up) energy is here! But the only place that he’s throwing the stuff is around Team 3’s desks. Toad mutters that Team 3 is a makjang team, makjang team. He starts throwing salt *at* the team. To Dae Goo: Becoming hostages and being attacked! To Soo Sun: And your mother was assaulted! Tae Il’s desk: Then another attack! When I thought it was all over, it keeps repeating. Repeating!

Toad is really being loud and dramatic and today I am really appreciating how over the top he is. Toad cries that he can't stop himself from performing this ritual to get rid of the bad energy! He pulls out some more – to where I can see it. It’s small and red, like stones or bean – and cries that even a smart a logical man like him can’t help it! Toad throws more at the team. Toad yells that they should accept this with reverence! They have double bad luck! He tells them that they should show some respect. These are red beans were harvested locally! Red beans?

Initially, I thought he was throwing red jasper. According to CrystalVaults.com, red jasper has long been viewed as a stone revered as a totem for protection and healing on the physical and spiritual realm. It’s been a talisman of warriors and a promoter of justice, protection and life. (And also fertility.) Today, it’s known as the stone of endurance, a gentle but vital stimulator of the chi, which brings physical strength and energy, stamina, focus and determination. Its steady frequency creates a stable energy which will improve health and overcome illness, encourage setting goals and seeing them through to completion, facing unpleasant tasks and giving courage to rectify wrongs.

Then Toad said that he was throwing red beans – which when dried can be as hard as rocks. According to A blog of an anthropologist, Ethnoscopes, says that red beans, especially the soup made with the beans, is believed to cast out demons. It is believes to negate bad fortune, since red is a symbol of positive yang energy for warding off negative energy forces. Korean red bean superstitions:
  • In order to prevent a disaster (or ghosts) red beans are scattered in the front of the main entrance. The color is supposed to be frightening.
  • Red beans can drive away disease, so when someone is sick, red bean soup is made and spilled in the street.
  • When someone has died, red bean soup helps the departed souls move on in peace.
  • Eating red bean soup during the Winter Solstice is supposed to bring a prosperous new year.
Neither sounds like something bad to have around, especially since the team is about to go up against Ae Yun and Moon Bae. They need all the help they can get.

Eung Do yells at Toad to clean all of it up, but Toad keeps going. Eung Do’s in his first year of bad luck. Soo Sun’s in her last year and Dae Goo’s in his double bad luck year!

Chief is pensively sitting in her office. Pan Suk enters. She’s not making eye contact. He bows respectfully and brings up the report about Tae Il being assaulted and the pendant being gone. There’s force behind his voice, even though he’s being calm. He asks her who did it. Still not meeting his eyes, she responds, asking how she would know. She snaps that is why he should have given the pendant to the Prosecutors. Yeah, right. We all know that it would have disappeared the moment Chief or Moon Bae knew about it, just like that time. Pan Suk chuckles with frustration and sighs.

Pan Suk asks her how Ji Yong is going to feel, if he gets to know the truth? This gets her to look at him, but she looks away before answering. She asks him if Ji Yong will believe him without any evidence? I’d say the answer is ‘yes.’ Ji Yong’s seen too much since he found out that Pan Suk wasn’t dirty to hold on blindly to his hatred of Pan Suk. They’re living together, for goodness sake! Which Chief doesn’t know. So Ji Yong has seen how Pan Suk is dedicated to bringing justice regardless of where it might lead. Chief asks Pan Suk who he thinks Ji Yong will believe. Pan Suk nods and says that he won't tell Ji Yong for now. Aw, he still thinks that Dae Goo wouldn’t believe him…

Pan Suk declares that from now on, he’s going to do everything he can to reveal the truth of the Masan School Nurse case and to arrest Ae Yun. He asks Chief to please not interfere. She looks at him and he declares that if he does interfere, he'll do everything in his capacity, which she know he’ll do. I think the inference is that he’ll talk to the press. He hopes that she’ll make the right decision now. Dramatic music plays. Pan Suk bows and leaves. Chief clenches her jaw and glares at the door. She knows her goose is cooked. And so close to getting her end goal…

Pan Suk and the team (minus a laid-up Tae Il) purposefully leave the precinct. Eung Do even tosses and catches his keys with one hand for emphasis that he means business!

[Episode 17: The Uncomfortable Truth]

Ae Yun is on a treadmill, working out. Pan Suk climbs on the treadmill next to her and starts walk. He greets her as Madam Designer Bag. She’s a little surprised to see him there. He’s in workout clothes, too. I love that he’s in workout clothes. He probably bought a membership so they can’t kick him out! Hee! He tells her that he thought she was just a professional at assault, but her aggravated robbery skills aren’t bad, either. She’s not looking at him anymore. Pan Suk declares that she now has two pendants at home. So is she a bit richer now? She rolls her eyes, but doesn’t answer. I should do 50 sit-ups every times she rolls her eyes. I will have a flat stomach very soon.

Pan Suk tells her that they have a witness, Madam Yoo Ae Yun. She’s not jogging now. There is someone who saw her enter and leave Kim Hwa Young's house 11 years ago. She tries to look like she’s not shaken by slowly running again. Pan Suk says that he’s requested the arrest warrant for her today, so she should turn herself in before she get cuffed and dragged out of her house. He comments – with an Aigoo – that she runs well without even getting out of breath. That’s good because when she's interrogated all day, her physique will suffer. He nods and tells her that it's good to run a lot… until she throws up. Heh.

Pan Suk waves Soo Sun to approach. She pulls out the summons and silently sets it on the console. Ae Yun slows down the treadmill. Soo Sun tells her that it’s a request for her attendance. Soo Sun is staring at her defiantly. Ae Yun just looks at her, like she can’t believe the gall of this girl. Pan Suk encourages Ae Yun to please think carefully. She should do herself a favor and go with this subpoena before the arrest warrant is issued. Ae Yun looks at Soo Sun, Pan Suk, who leaves, and back at Soo Sun. You shouldn’t have messed with her mama! That’s what started the whole thing. Soo Sun walks away.

Ae Yun angrily rips up the summons. Soo Sun hears. She throws it on the floor. Soo Sun runs over and picks up the pieces. She stops in front of Ae Yun and holds it out at her. Ae Yun asks Soo Sun what she’s doing. Acting so cocky... Soo Sun replies that she shouldn’t tear up a summons so recklessly. This was all made with the tax payers' money. Ae Yun can’t believe she’s still standing there. Soo Sun puts down her hand and tells Ae Yun that it seems she’s still unaware of things – since she tore the summons up without even reading it. Even if she’s hidden the stolen pendant somewhere, *she* no longer has any place to hide. Bam! You go, Soo Sun! Ae Yun stares defiantly at Soo Sun, lips pursed. Soo Sun tells Ae Yun to please make an appearance and protect what's left of your name. She bows and leaves.

Dae Goo’s interviewing Oma’s best friend, Ae Sun. Ae Yun doesn’t look familiar. Her name isn’t familiar, either. Dae Goo’s disappointed. Ae Sun tells him that she wants to help, but what should I do? His Oma mother was a very warm and good person. Especially the people who volunteered with her, everyone liked Hwa Young very much. Ae Sun remembers that there might be pictures and eagerly gets them for Dae Goo. Pictures?

Dae Goo looks through the pictures. Aw, Oma! There’s a picture of a smiling Oma posing with a little girl and a smiling man – that looks a lot like a younger, happy Ji Il. Dae Goo pauses because he sees it, too. He asks Ae Sun about the man. She does know him. Dae Goo asks how the man – because he hasn’t asked for the name yet! – knows Oma. Ae Sun’s uncomfortable. She looks down for a moment but then decided to tell him, since he’s all grown up now. They liked each other. They liked each other a lot. Another shot of the photo. Ji Il looks really happy.

As Ae Sun is talking, Dae Goo knows what this means. He puts his head in his hand. Especially because the plot-thickens music is playing. Ae Sun says that they really liked each other but suddenly one day, Hwa Young just quit the hospital and left Seoul. Dae Goo’s looking at her, with dread on his face. She heard Ji Il's marriage announcement not long after that, to the daughter of a very rich family. Ae Sun says that she thought to herself that this was why Hwa Young left Seoul. Dae Goo looks at the picture again. Ae Sun asks Ji Yong what kind of person his father is. Did his mom tell him? Dae Goo can’t believe what she’s saying and doesn’t answer.

Dae Goo’s sitting by the river now, with the picture, thinking about the past and the things people said.
Soo Sun: “I heard your mom is a mistress!... That she seduced a married man and is living in hiding after having a baby.”

Ji Yong: Is it true that Dad passed away?
Oma: Why are you suddenly saying something that doesn't make sense? Of course your Dad passed away.
Ji Yong: Then why is everyone calling me a son of a mistress? Did you really like a married man?

Oma: I'm sorry. From the moment you were born, I will always be sorry to you for raising you without a father.
Dae Goo reels at the implication of what this means. He gets up and looks out at the water. He goes to the mausoleum. He asks Oma is she lied to her son. Did Dad not pass away? He begs her to answer him. He’s crying. Eventually, he tells her that it’s all right. It doesn't matter to him. The people who did this to her, he will definitely catch them for her. The shot of a crying Dae Goo is ripping up my heart. A tear rolls down as he tells her that he’s sorry, for not being able to protect her. More crying.

Soo Sun’s with Tae Il as they look through mugshots. Dae Goo enters and clucks at Tae Il for looking at the mug shots. He should be lying down! Tae Il says that he’s fine. Dae Goo replies that Tae Il’s not fine! He (Dae Goo) got stabbed so he knows what he’s talking about. Tae Il sighs and tells Dae Goo that Dae Goo should understand how much he wants to catch them, since Dae Goo’s been stabbed before. Tae Il declares they need to catch them quickly.

Soo Sun tells Dae Goo that she’s tried getting Tae Il to quit, but he listen to her, either. Dae Goo slides Eung Do’s lucky bracelet on Tae Il’s wrist. Tae Il protests that Eung Do gave it to him. And he probably should hold onto it, particularly since he just found out who his Appa is. Gook marvels that being hurt is worth it, since Dae Goo-Dae Goo is worrying over him.

Some doctors enter. Tae Il sees them and avoids looking at them. It’s Tae Il’s Father. Father asks if Tae Il’s getting revenge on his father? The gang is surprised. This is Tae Il’s dad? Tae Il replies that he isn’t and he’ll leave as soon as he’s recovered. Father asks if Tae Il’s relented and plans on coming back after he’s discharged. All Tae Il says is, “I'm sorry.” Father nods and replies that Tae Il and Tae Soo are the same. Both of them are sons that he does not have. After Tae Il’s discharged, he should not appear in front of Father again. Father and his doctors leave.

Tae Il sighs and says that that’s his Father. Soo Sun’s shocked that Tae Il’s Father is a doctor. Gook’s more interested in Tae Soo. Do Tae Il have an older brother? Tae Il nods that he does. Gook clucks at Tae Il for not telling them that he had an older brother. Gook calls Tae Il a punk (again) and clucks at him for keeping it such a secret amongst his family whom he eat meals together with. Dae Goo tells Gook to leave it. Everyone has something that they want to hide. Tae Il says that he wants to tell them. Will they listen?

Flashback. Tae Il as a doctor. Fashionably dressed except for his dark-rimmed glasses. Those things are huge! He gets a phone call from Mother. She reminds him to come home early, since they’re meeting his future sister-in-law for the first time. Tae Il gets home and something is smashed. Tae Il rushes inside.

Yes! I was right! Father is in the middle of a violent temper tantrum. Mother is physically holding Father back from beating Tae Soo with a golf club. And the ‘daughter-in-law’ is A MAN. Tae Il enters as Tae Soo begs Father to accept him as he is. Tae Soo declares that if Father can’t accept them, then they will go live somewhere else quietly as if they are dead. Father sputters over that. How can a man be in love with another man?! Tae Soo cries as Father tells him to just die. Doesn’t Tae Soo know how Father raised him? Mother is crying. Father declares that if Tae Soo plans on dishonoring his father and living like that, then he should just die at his hands! Father’s going to club Tae Soo to death, but Mother stops him.

Tae Soo sees Tae Il and says his name, but Tae Il leaves the house. Tae Soo leaves his boyfriend to run after Tae Il. Tae Il crosses the street and Tae Soo runs after him, to get hit by a truck. He dies. Tae Il declares that after that, he couldn't become a doctor. He didn't have any reason or desire to in the first place, but I couldn't bear it any longer. Then suddenly, he wanted to become a detective. Tae Il felt like if he became a detective, his brother would forgive him, since his brother's dream was to become a detective. Tae Il claps his hands together and declares, “The end.” No one tells Tae Il that they’re sorry, because it’s understood, and would somehow lessen things. Soo Sun proposes that they eat some Korean melons. Gook wants regular. Soo Sun tells Dae Goo to lower the bed while they get out the bed. And Tae Il is grateful for his friends. Who would have thought a few months ago that they would become such a family?

Dae Goo sits on a bench, thinking about what Ae Sun said. Hwa Young liked Ji Il and Ji Il liked Hwa Young a lot, too. But... What kind of person is Dae Goo’s father? Soo Sun finds him on the bench. She declares that he said he was going to the bathroom. Why is Dae Goo out there? He looks up at her, a little awkward, a little emotional, and then pats the bench next to him for her to sit. Soo Sun stands there and says that Tae Il and Gook will think they disappeared and will look for them. He motions at the bench with his head and his eyes. She stiffly sits down next to him.

Soo Sun asks Dae Goo why he wants her to sit. He says that for now, he’s borrowing this. This being her lap. He lays down so that his head is resting on her. Soo Sun isn’t sure how to react to this. Dae Goo declares that this is good. The cushion is good too. Heh. She still isn’t sure what she’s supposed to be doing. Dae Goo calls her ‘Soybean Powder.’ He looks up at her and tells her that she’s chubbier than she looks. She doesn’t say anything for a second and then tries to shove him off her lap. Dae Goo laughs and tells her that she passed the first test! Dork. But I like that Dae Goo doesn’t want a girl that won’t fight with him. Soo Sun smiles at that.

Dae Goo asks Soo Sun if he can sleep a bit. She answers, “Of course.” He tells her, “Thank you.” He asks Soybean Powder what kind of person her Dad was. She says that he was clueless, fun and warm. To her, he was the best dad and as time goes on, someone she misses more and more. She asks why he’s asking. Dae Goo says it’s just because. Soo Sun asks if it’s really just because and he answers that it’s really just because. As Dae Goo lays on her lap, Soo Sun uses her hand to provide shade from the street lamps.

Next day, Dae Goo goes to see Ji Il. Ji Il welcomes Dae Goo to sit. Dae Goo looks at the man who is probably his father. Ji Il asks why Dae Goo’s looking for him. Because I know Dae Goo, I can tell that he’s having a hard time holding it together right now. His eyes are a little red. He pulls out that picture. He asks Ji Il if Ji Il knows this person. Ji Il picks up the photo and looks at it. Dae Goo says that she's the person he did community service with at the Chung Rak community service center. Ji Il looks up at Dae Goo and starts to asks how Dae Goo knew that. Dae Goo declares that Kim Hwa Young is his mother. This is obviously news for Ji Il.

Dae Goo asks Ji Il if he has, by any chance, heard of the Masan School Nurse Murder case from 11 years ago. Ji Il’s face is pained as he says that it’s his first time hearing this. Dae Goo reminds himself to breathe. He says that the victim, the Masan school nurse, is my mother, Kim Hwa Young. Ji Il visibly reacts to that news, like he can’t believe Oma is dead. He says, “What?” Dae Goo continues, says that a pendant was dropped at the crime scene by the suspect. That pendant was identified as belonging to his wife, Yoo Ae Yun. Ji Il’s face practically looks horrified as he processes what Dae Goo is saying.

Dae Goo tells Ji Il that what he’s curious about is why at the scene of his mother's murder, Yoo Ae Yun's pendant was dropped. Also why he, President Shin, are standing next to his mother in an old photo. He was curious about that so he came looking for Ji Il. Can Ji Il explain it to him? Ji Il is processing. He looks at his watch and apologizes because he has an important appointment. He tells Dae Goo that he will contact Dae Goo later. Dae Goo, by how he’s blinking and holding his mouth, feels blown off. I don’t think that’s what Ji Il is doing. Ji Il asks for Dae Goo’s contact information. This surprises Dae Goo. Maybe he’s not being blown off. Maybe Ji Il really means that he will contact Dae Goo later. Dae Goo gives Ji Il his card.

Ji Il looks at the card. Ji Il asks Dae Goo how old he is. Dae Goo pauses and says that he’s 26. Ji Il’s face looks more pained. I’m pretty sure he’s imagining what Oma went through right now and hating himself. Ji Il responds, “I see.” He says that he will be in contact soon. He leaves. Dae Goo watches him go.

Ki Jae arrives. He tells the doorman that he’s there to get money from Ji Il. Ji Il walks by Ki Jae without noticing, his hand on his forehead. Ji Il shakes his head, like he can’t believe this, and continues walking. Ki Jae can tell something’s wrong and wonders why Ji Il’s like that. He sees a dazed Dae Goo walking through the lobby. Chung Chun Men? And I just figured out, because of the subtitle I’m looking at, that Ki Jae is pronouncing ‘Man’ as ‘Men’ and ‘Chung Chun’ is ‘Awesome.’ Ki Jae wonders if Dae Goo is there to see Ji Il. He almost yells after Dae Goo, but decides to talk to Ji Il first. After all, he needs that money, probably for an excellent weekend.

Dae Goo’s gone to see Boots in jail. Boots actually agreed to see him. Glad that Boots is looking well. Boots looks at Dae Goo and sighs. Like he’s preparing himself to pay the piper. Boots sits. Dae Goo tells Boots that it’s been a while. Dae Goo says that he found the pendant. No reaction from Boots. Dae Goo says that that didn't belong to C.G. It belonged to Ae Yun, Assemblyman Yoo Moon Bae’s daughter. And the one who hit Oma on the head with the vase that day was also Ae Yun. Right? Boots looks away, which is a ‘yes.’

Dae Goo asks him, “Why?” Is it perhaps because he’s Shin Ji Il’s son? Boots looks up at him. Yes, that’s it. Dae Goo holds up the picture of Ji Il and Oma together. It’s so sad. They look so happy. This is right, isn't it? Boots won’t meet Dae Goo’s eyes. From the beginning, this incident had nothing to do with the Company President. Far from being about revenge. Boots looks at Dae Goo and tells “Kiddo” to please not dig any deeper. If he does, Dae Goo will die and so will Boots. Dae Goo puts down the picture and asks Boots if he thinks that Dae Goo will stop. Dae Goo yells at Boots, asking what kind of feelings does Boots think he has, as he’s there today!

Dae Goo, his eyes glossy, says that he’ll ask Boots one more time. Ae Yun killed Oma, because she suspected that Ji Il was his father, right? Boots tells the guard that the meeting is over. Dae Goo yells after Boots that Boots killed Oma and Boots is the only one who can tell him the truth about that incident. Dae Goo sighs and wipes his face. He tells Boots that he’s begging. Please tell him the truth about that day. Boots leaves, even though Dae Goo yells his name several times.

Boots walks back to his cell. Across the hall, another inmate watches Boots walk into his cell. I feel like I should recognize this guy, the amount of time they showed his face.

Ae Yun is at home, drinking some scotch. Ji Il walks by. He stops and looks at her for a moment and then starts to head upstairs. She snarks at him, asking whether he thinks of her of a person anymore. He stops to look at her. Ae Yun tells Ji Il that no matter how innocent he pretends to be, he can't trick her! She adds that he’s a bastard! Ji Il replies that it seems that she’s drunk. She should go and sleep. Ae Yun nastily tells him that regardless of what he does, he’s the one who chose to walk into these flames of hell. He chose it, on his own! She’s shrieking now. He screams at her to please just stop! Isn’t she tired of it?! Doesn't she even get exhausted?! And his face is pained as he goes upstairs. Ae Yun swigs another drink.

The next morning, Ki Jae asks Ji Il if he met Awesome Dude yesterday? Confused faces. Ae Yun asks what kind of a man? Ki Jae tells them that they know. The person who tried to take mom away, Detective Eun Dae Goo. Freaked out look from Moon Bae. Ki Jae asks if Ji Il had coffee with Dae Goo yesterday. Ji Il looks at Ki Jae and then at Ae Yun. She asks what Ki Jae is talking about. Ji Il replies that he ran into Dae Goo by coincidence. He greeted Dae Goo briefly, because of the earlier visit to the house. Ji Il puts down his spoon and says that he’ll get up first. Moon Bae gives his permission.

After Ji Il leaves, Ae Yun asks Ki Jae if they were together long. What were they talking about? Ki Jae says that he doesn’t know, he only saw them leave. Looking at Ae Yun’s raised eyebrows – she must get that expression from Moon Bae – Ki Jae asks her why she looks so surprised. Has she caused another accident? She snaps at him to just eat. Moon Bae is not happy.

Ae Yun is stressing. Flashback. Eleven Years Ago. She’s walking and sees Ji Il talking with Oma. Oma says that she’s living well. Ji Il doesn’t need to worry. Ji Il is obviously pleased to see Oma and has a soft look on his face. Ae Yun is immediately upset. Ji Il laughs and says that it’s a relief (Oma living well). Ji Il marvels that after so long, they run into each other by coincidence. What’s it been? About 15 years? Oma isn’t making eye contact as she says that that sounds about right. You know it’s right, since you have a *15 year old.* Oma still isn’t looking at Ji Il as she says that she was hoping there wouldn't be a chance meeting like this. Oma notices Ae Yun. She obviously knows who Ae Yun is. She quickly tells Ji Il that she’ll be going and he can go. Mom runs off, ignoring Ji Il calling her name. Ji Il is obviously troubled from their visit.

Now Ae Yun is at Oma’s house, pushing past Oma to come inside. Ae Yun sees the picture of Oma with Ji Yong. She can’t take her eyes off it. Oma comes in the room and Ae Yun slaps Oma across the face. Really? Slap her back! Oma looks up at Ae Yun defiantly and Ae Yun slaps her again. Do it! Don’t let her hit you like that! Oma looks at Ae Yun again. Ae Yun asks Oma how she dares to look at Ae Yun in the eye. Did Oma think she wouldn't find out if Oma ran away and lived in hiding like this? Oma dared to give birth to and raise her husband's child? Oma replies that Ae Yun is still as rude as her old self.

Ae Yun can’t believe that Oma is talking back. Oma declares that Ji Yong’s not the judge's son. He's *her* son. Ji Yong has nothing to do with her, so she can leave. Ji Yong will be coming home right about now. Ae Yun tells Oma that she wants to die, right? Oma declares that she’s kept her promise to Ae Yun. Since that day 15 years ago, she’s never once met with Ji Il. She hasn’t contacted him. So Ae Yun should keep her promise, too. Didn't Ae Yun say that she would not appear in front of Oma again? Ae Yun’s starting to wear her ‘I can’t believe this flea is talking back to me!’ look.

Oma declares that Ae Yun should go home. She’s saying it again. Ji Yong is not the judge's son and from now on too, until the day she dies, Oma will have no business meeting the judge. It won't happen even if the world turns upside down, so... Ae Yun should rest assured and please go back home. Ae Yun suppresses a sneer. Oma tells Ae Yun not to come find her again. Then Oma turns her back and Ae Yun clubs her with the vase. But the first hit doesn’t do it, so Ae Yun clubs her across the face.

Ae Yun sees the blood on the vase. She drops the vase. She tries shaking Oma to wake her, but Oma won’t wake up. Ae Yun freaks out. She calls Moon Bae and declares that she thinks she killed someone.

Boots arrives at the house. He wipes off any finger prints by the front door… off the vase... the picture frame. As he’s wiping things down, he’s also tossing the place so that it looks like there was a struggle. The door knobs. Boots trashes the front room, too.

Ae Yun – in the present – takes some pills to calm her nerves. She looks over at the portrait of her and Ji Il. They are really far apart in the picture. She throws her glass at Ji Il’s face and breaks the glass.

Dae Goo is in Ji Il’s office. They are sitting. Ji Il begins by saying that although it's late, he offers Dae Goo his deepest condolences that Oma had such an unpleasant incident happen to her. Hwa Young was a really good person. She was warm and kind to everyone. Then he adds that he and Oma only volunteered together once or twice a month and all they had was a good senior-junior relationship. That is all. No! Come on! You’re saying you’re not the father? Dae Goo looks at him and asks if Ji Il is saying the they weren't dating. Ji Il looks away and says that it never happened. He adjusts his glasses.

Ji Il says that he’s not sure how his wife got involved in that incident, but he had heard the real criminal has already been caught. Because of that, he would like it if he didn't have to discuss this incident with Dae Goo in the future. Dae Goo looks at Ji Il. I’m not sure if Dae Goo believes Ji Il.

Dae Goo drives to the pier and screams with frustration several times. He pounds the rail in frustration. He looks at the photo again and crumples it and cries. Disowned by his own father… over Ae Yun.

Dae Goo gets back to the precinct. He walks up the Pan Suk, who is at his desk, and declares that there is a way to catch Yoo Ae Yun. Now the team is assembled (still minus Tae Il). Dae Goo’s idea is to get her confession. Dae Goo says that the pendant and the eyewitness testimony are not direct proof of Yoo Ae Yun committing murder. Her confession would be. Eung Do declares that they don’t even know what her motive would be. There has to be something to interrogate her about first to get her confession. Dae Goo replies that emotional irritation and provocation will get her to reveal everything. Pan Suk looks at Dae Goo like he’s wondering what Dae Goo’s thinking.

Sa Kyung has joined them. She declares that it’s not hopeless. Ae Yun is a very unpredictable woman and if she made a fake pendant and then stole the real one, it means she's feeling cornered. Compared to getting a confession from a calm and rational person, getting a confession from an emotional and hot-tempered one is much easier. Sa Kyung says they need to start by accurately understanding Yoo Ae Yun's personality.

We see Soo Sun getting a massage and asking the masseuse about Ae Yun. Masseuse says that Ae Yun really dislikes being told to wait. Make her wait. Check. On the day she comes to the spa, if they're not fully prepared, she'd rather cancel her appointment. If they make her wait for even a minute, she gets extremely angry. Later Soo Sun texts the group – with the Kakao Group app – that if Ae Yun has to wait even a minute, she flies off the handle. In particular, she can't stand not having all the attention.

Gook is at the hair salon, getting his hair dried, wearing sunglasses. Ae Yun is also there. She screams, “HEY!!” startling the stylist. Ae Yun yells that she told her not to use that comb! She orders the girl to put it away! Gook tells the group that if Ae Yun sees anything with a sharp point, she freaks out. Sa Kyung reads that and declares, “Bingo!” (Sounds the same in Korean as if does in English.) She texts the group that Ae Yun has a fear of sharp objects. It's definitely an Achilles' Heel.

Tae Il’s working from his hospital room. He sends them the video files he found off the Internet. Because they're official images from public appearances, he doesn't know if they'll be of any help. Sa Kyung replies that they’ll be helpful because it shows how much she hides or reveals her true self in social relationships. She asks how he’s feeling and he tells her that he’s gotten much better. He’s still young. Since it’s on the group chat, Pan Suk reads it and mutters, “Jeez.” Pan Suk texts that Tae Il should just take care of himself. Looking at him, he’s all skin and bones. Sa Kyung reads that and mutters, “How childish.” She’s smiling anyway.

Eung Do is at the driving range. He falls and painfully rubs his knee. He asks the trainer if, when the ajumma members come and she has to fix their posture, are there any picky ajummas? Instructor declares that there are many. He tells the group that from the instructors to everything else, unless they're the best, Ae Yun doesn't speak to them. And, she hates losing to others the most.

Pan Suk goes to visit Moon Bae. He knocks on Moon Bae’s office door but Moon Bae doesn’t say to enter. Pan Suk enters and Moon Bae is staring straight ahead. Pan Suk gives a little bow and declares that he’s from Gangnam Police Station, Violent Crime Team 3, Team Leader Seo Pan Suk. As Moon Bae might already know regarding his daughter's predicament, he has something to tell Moon Bae so that's why he’s there. Moon Bae finally looks in Pan Suk’s direction (not at him, because Pan Suk is beneath him) and tells Pan Suk to have a seat.

Pan Suk sits. Once he’s seated, Pan Suk doesn’t look at Moon Bae either. He declares that since Moon Bae is busy – yeah, he looks really busy right now, what with the sitting and staring – he will get to the point. He asks Moon Bae to please have his daughter make an appearance. The little smile that was on Moon Bae’s face leaves. Did he not know that they’d summoned her for interrogation? Pan Suk says that if Ae Yun appears at the police station and sincerely undergoes investigation, he will not bother her anymore. Pan Suk promises, however that if Ae Yun doesn't appear, he’s prepared to lose my job and will reveal to the media, the relationship between Moon Bae and Madame Designer Bag, and the fact that Ae Yun is a suspect in the Masan School Nurse Murder Case.

Moon Bae smiles. He declares that Pan Suk must have nothing to lose. Arrogantly, Moon Bae declares that Pan Suk is blind to everything (meaning what he has to lose). Pan Suk turns to look at Moon Bae and asks how he knew. Pan Suk declares that because of that case eleven years ago, he lost his son. Also, another person, at a young age, directly witnessed his mother's death. So, did Moon Bae think he would be able to see anything else? This gets a small reaction out of Moon Bae. Moon Bae smiles slightly and Pan Suk’s left eyebrow quivers like he wants to punch the man.

Car in the middle of nowhere. Chief approaches. Drivers gets out and opens the back door for her. Moon Bae sits inside. She bows in greeting. Moon Bae asks her how she can take care of matters in such a sloppy fashion. She barely reaction. Was she always such an incompetent and sloppy person? Forcefully Moon Bae declares that she couldn’t block that trivial investigation and now it’s come directly to him! Chief asks why he’s yelling at her for that. Someone who promotes large causes should've taken care of household matters properly to begin with! Moon Bae hisses at her, full of wrath, asking what she just said!

Voice full of emotion, Chief declares that if, at the beginning, she knew that it would have turned out this way, she would never have started it. Eyes psychotically wide, Moon Bae declares that she knew that from the moment she revealed Ji Yong's location eleven years ago, she knew that child would be killed by Boots! Chief visibly is pained by that truth. After a brief moment, she gets it together and declares that at this point, what's important is that there's no way to protect Ae Yun! Moon Bae sighs angrily. Chief declares that there are no alternatives. Make her appear and somehow, have her go through the investigation without them detecting any cracks. If Moon Bae doesn't, they could all die together. Now there’s a nice image. Moon Bae looks at her shocked. She just gets out of the car. As she leaves, he’s very troubled. But then he gets angry again.

Practice interrogation by Dae Goo. The gang, minus Tae Il, plus Sa Kyung, is all there. What they need to do is have Gook go in there and act unprepared and goofy. That would annoy the heck out of her to have to deal with such a peon. Dae Goo tells ‘Ae Yun’ to answer his questions properly. Sa Kyung stops him. She tells him that since Ae Yun’s going to try to gain the upper hand in any way that she can, he should adjust his posture a little... She has him lean back in his chair and cross his arms. She also tells him to lift up the corners of his mouth a bit, too, so his expression isn’t as dour. Sa Kyung pours out a bunch of well-sharpened pencils on the table. She says that it’s kind of a cheap trick, but use Ae Yun’s Aichmophobia (fear of pointed objects like needles, pencils...) to lead her to become overly excited or express a snippy reaction. The kids practice poking the pencil at Ae Yun Heh! I love it.

Dae Goo points with the pencil and tells Ae Yun that she better answer properly, while he’s talking nicely. Sa Kyung declares that if the pointing continues, to stop it from happening, Ae Yun may start saying things she's kept hidden inside, without even realizing what she’s doing. Eung Do mutters that, oddly, it somehow makes him feel kind of bad. Dae Goo points the pencil.

Soo Sun says that although she was aware that the interrogation was psychological warfare, she didn't realize they needed to pay this much attention to their body position and everything they say. Sa Kyung smiles in understanding. She asks Dae Goo if he has anything he wants to say. You really should tell them about how you’re Ji Il’s son, so they’re not surprised when you spring it on Ae Yun. You really should. Dae Goo says that they have crucial tactic that they can employ to deal with Yoo Ae Yun. He declares that he thinks he knows the motive. Thank you! Everyone leans forward. Sa Kyung wasn’t expecting Dae Goo to say that.

After the meeting, Dae Goo leaves first. Gook asks him if he’s okay. Dae Goo looks at him and kind of shrugs. Gook smiles and hurries after him. Soo Sun follows. Eung Do looks after him and tells Pan Suk that at times he worries that Dae Goo might sink below the surface (disappear) because of the heavy weight of his heartache.

Ae Yun is talking with Moon Bae. She’s standing. She asks Moon Bae if he’s in his right mind right now. He wants her to go where? The police station? Moon Bae – not looking at Ae Yun – says that it’s just a formality. Attorney Kim will go with her. Is that the slimy one? The one who smirked about Mom’s case, the one who was prepared to lie? Ae Yun purses her lips bitterly and looks sick. Moon Bae tells her that she needs to just sit there, with her lips sealed, and then come back home. Ae Yun tells him that if it’s just a formality, Moon Bae can just go! She shrieks at him that he said she should trust him and she should wait for him to handle it as he saw fit. This is your answer? He should have taken care of this properly from the get-go!

Moon Bae declares that the current situation can only be smoothed over this way, so she needs to report tomorrow morning. Ae Yun shrieks that she won’t! She keeps shrieking that this is why she told Moon Bae to kill Dae Goo from the beginning. Moon Bae looks at her and asks if she really cannot understand the situation? Ji Il has already met that child. In this situation, if Dae Goo disappears suddenly, who will Son-in-law suspect first? Moon Bae orders her to close her eyes and go get investigated. Dae Goo will be taken care of afterwards. Ae Yun declares that that bastard, she’s going to make sure to kill him with her own hands. For sure. And I was really hoping that Ki Jae was eavesdropping but no such luck.

The kids are waiting outside the police station. Ae Yun arrives with Attorney Kim. She gets out of the car, with her sunglasses on, and stops to stand before Dae Goo. He declares that in the end, they meet here, Ms. Yoo Ae Yun. She scoff with disbelief and shoves past him. Slimy walks by too. Dae Goo steels his face and follows. The precinct mutters with disbelief that Ae Yun came. Team Leader Seo is amazing! Gangnam station is something. Something! Dae Goo and Sa Kyung share a look, since Ae Yun is indirectly responsible for the death of someone they loved.

Moon Bae sits in his office, rapping his knuckles, like last time.

Toad enters Chief’s office to report that Ae Yun has arrived.

Ae Yun sits, arms crossed, still wearing her sunglasses in the interrogation room. She sighs impatiently. The team is watching her. Slimy checks his watch. Ae Yun starts drumming her fingernails and huffing impatiently. Dae Goo moves to leave the observation room and Sa Kyung tells him to wait another 5 minutes. I’m telling you, they should send in Gook. He’ll come across as the least competent of all of them. Sa Kyung stops drumming and yells, “Hey! You guys are there, aren't you?!” She shrieks, asking if they aren’t going to hurry up and start! Slimy starts – I don’t know if was the shriek or that she broke – and tells her to contain herself. Sa Kyung declares that it's done. For now, they're divided. Time to get started.

Before Dae Goo leaves, he reaches briefly for Soo Sun’s hand. She takes a hold of it more firmly and squeezes her encouragement. It helps him to get ready. Plus, she did it where anyone might see. Dae Goo leaves to get started. Soo Sun chews her lip, nervously.

Dae Goo enters the interrogation room carrying a huge stack of papers and a pencil holder with all those pencils on top. I am laughing at that. It’s a huge stack. He apologizes for making her wait. He slams the papers down on the table and declares that being a newbie, he a lot of miscellaneous work. He plops down the pencil holder. As he flips open one of the binders, he tells her that in order to make the necessary progress, she should remove her sunglasses. He dismissively motions for her to take them off. She scoffs. Slimy tells her he thinks it would be best if she took them off. Ae Yun takes them off and defiantly tosses them on the table at Dae Goo.

Dae Goo wiggles the pencil holder, drawing Ae Yun’s attention. Her look of horror cracks me up. I am enjoying this way too much! Sa Kyung is studying Ae Yun closely. Dae Goo opens his ink pen. Ae Yun looks away from the pencils with a sick look on her face. Dae Goo declares that even though he knows she’s not going to answer any of the questions he’s prepared anyway, he’ll go ahead and ask what he’s the most curious about first. Does Ae Yun perhaps know the victim of the Masan School Nurse Murder Case, Miss Kim Hwa Young? Ae Yun huffs/laughs. Dae Goo declares that he’ll change the question. Didn't Ae Yun ask him the last time who he resembles? Ae Yun rolls her eyes but doesn’t answer.

Dae Goo pretends to start looking through the binder as he says that he’s not sure. He wonders who he resembles? He takes out the photo of Oma and Ji Il and slides it toward Ae Yun while saying, Shin Ji Il and Kim Hwa Young? Ae Yun stares at the photo, horrified. Her breathing quickens. Dae Goo just looks at her. She glares up at Dae Goo and he doesn’t even flinch.

Thoughts

Whoa! It's all coming down now!
  1. Yay! Tae Il didn't die! And we finally found out what happened with his hyung, Tae Soo. I feel so vindicated that my suspicions -- that Tae Soo was gay and that something happened to him that caused Tae Il to become a cop -- were right! 'Fist-pump' right! But, oh, man, how horrible for Tae Il! Wow. He never gets to tell his hyung that he loves him anyway and I know that's how Tae Il felt. I feel confident that Tae Il would accept his hyung no matter what. I even wonder if Tae Il already knew, just couldn't believe that Tae Soo would go and tell their Father. And that Father... what a jerk. 'You refuse to follow my commands... then you're dead to me!' Mother is not going to like that. I wonder if Mother even knows that Tae Il got stabbed. I suspect not, because how could she stay away, knowing he almost died. Here's hoping that she finds out and tells Father to go jump in a lake, she's going to have a relationship with her son! I totally think that if they supported Tae Il's decisions, he'd be open to her picking out a girl for him, too. But Father needs to get over himself. What a jerk to do that to your son right after he's out of surgery. And yay to the gang for being so accepting and loving of Tae Il.
  2. Soo Sun and Dae Goo hold hands. More than once. Squeee! I also love how he took a nap in her lap. And teased her. And cheered when she didn't take his crap. Love him! Love her! Love them!
  3. Love how Soo Sun shoved the summons in Ae Yun's face and how Pan Suk came to torment Ae Yun very publicly about what she'd done.
  4. Hope the red beans work in warding off the bad luck. Actually, in a lot of ways, they've had really good luck, despite people being stabbed. Neither Dae Goo nor Tae Il died and they very well could have. The events and Mom's beating lead them to catch Boots and Ae Yun for Oma's murder. Plus, they led Dae Goo to discover who his father is. Even if Ji Il is saying he's not the father.
  5. I am kind of wondering if Ji Il is the father, given that Ji Il said he and Oma never dated. But I'm hoping that Ji Il was just trying to not stir the pot and his denial was a lie. Why would Ae Sun talk about him and Oma liking each other so much and why would Oma flee Seoul at Ae Yun's threats, if Dae Goo weren't Ji Il's son. Oh, Oma, you really should have told the truth, or left Dae Goo the truth *somewhere* to be delivered upon your death, or when he reached 18, which ever happened later.
  6. Interesting what's going on with Chief right now. At least she's looking less cold-hearted these days. I still believe that she genuinely cares about Dae Goo. She probably started as his guardian out of guilt, but then to genuinely care about him over the years. It doesn't look like she has any other family. Dae Goo's probably the only son she has... I can understand why she wouldn't want him to know the truth, because it's going to hurt him deeply and it's going to ruin what they now have. But at least she wasn't Oma's murderer. I was worried about that there for a few minutes. Glad that she's finally wising up to Moon Bae's agenda and standing up to the man.
  7. Hopefully, Pan Suk will realize that Dae Goo trusts him now. Dae Goo wouldn't have confided in Pan Suk if he didn't. Chief's comment asking who Pan Suk thought Dae Goo would believe... the answer is Pan Suk, even though Dae Goo wouldn't want it to be true. He already faced Oma lying to him about his father being dead and that his father might have something to do with Oma's murder. Dae Goo wasn't afraid to confront either. The real family that's grown with the gang, it's brought Dae Goo to a place where he can deal with these things and not have emotional blinders on.
  8. Yay that Tae Il is still working, even though he's injured. It just makes me smile the team that they have!
  9. I wonder what Ji Il is thinking in all of this. It's got to be a blow that the woman you once loved was murdered years ago. That it was probably done by the woman you left her for. That you have a son you never knew about. I really wonder if he's still going to not claim Dae Goo once he finds out that Moon Bae and Ae Yun have been trying to *kill* Dae Goo, too.
  10. I wonder how Ki Jae is going to react to being related to Chung Chun Man. And that his Mother killed Oma. And his Grandfather actively covered it up and didn't have a problem killing people, either.
  11. How was C.G. connected to Moon Bae?
  12. I'm anticipating an attack on Boots in jail. Hopefully, he won't die and it will get him to spill the beans about everything.
  13. Love that Sa Kyung has been helping the team, although I would have liked a little more Pan Suk-Sa Kyung action. Hopefully, we'll get to see more of the reconciliation before this is all over, since we all care about that relationship, too. But I love that she's not bitter or giving Pan Suk a hard time about how much he's devoting to his albatross. This is the one case that's haunted him for 11 years. It's good that she's giving him the space and the grace enough so that he can finish things.
  14. Can't wait to see the rest of Ae Yun's interrogation. I relish the idea of poking pencils! So who *does* Dae Goo resemble? Shin Ji Il or Kim Hwa Young? And I just realized that Dae Goo's given name is basically a combo of his parents names: Ji (Il) + (Hwa) Yong. Aw. If that doesn't say it, I don't know what else will...
