You're All Surrounded Episode 9 Recap

The episode starts where we left off: Pan Suk and Dae Goo staring at each other at the Morgue. Pan Suk walks over to Dae Goo and Dae Goo is doing everything to look calm. I can tell by the look in his eyes, the tightness of his shoulder muscles, and the big swallow he just took that he is freaking out, especially since he just lost his only lead to Oma’s killer. Pan Suk repeats himself, calling Dae Goo Kim Ji Yong and saying that he’s alive. At first he says, “You are alive after all.” Which implies that he had no idea that Ji Yong was alive, meaning that Boots *didn’t* tell him that Dae Goo was Ji Yong. And if Boots didn’t tell him, they must not have been working together at all. Dae Goo please realize this later.

As Pan Suk is saying that he’s alive, the look of fear and longing in Dae Goo’s eyes makes my heart ache. Is the secret *finally* out? Twitch from Pan Suk as he mutters Ji Yong’s name and I think if this goes on for too much longer, Pan Suk’s going to break down. And then… Dae Goo asks, “Who?” Pan Suk repeats the name, Ji Yong, and asks Dae Goo if it’s really him. Dae Goo goes with this, responding that he’s asking who this Ji Yong person is. Pan Suk doesn’t saying anything as Dae Goo says that Pan Suk’s been sneaking around, going places like the orphanage like a cat in the night, investigating him, and if Pan Suk wants to know something, he should just ask directly. Which he just did… I’m just saying. Dae Goo bows while Pan Suk blinks and tries to get out of there.

But Pan Suk’s not just going to roll over, especially since he’s practically positive now that Dae Goo is Ji Yong. He asks Dae Goo why he was at the morgue. Dae Goo turns around to answer and spots Gook walking down the hall, so he lies and says that he was at the morgue for the autopsy of the poor dead guy. Gook sees Dae Goo and it’s like he was expecting Dae Goo to be there. Gook starts when he sees Pan Suk and asks why Team Leader is there. No one says anything. Gook holds out the results.

Pan Suk goes and checks out C.G.’s body. He sighs. Eung Do arrives. Pan Suk asks the medical examiner if Dae Goo also come and identify C.G. just now. Medical Examiner says he didn’t. But Pan Suk still has a bone that he’s got a hold of.

Dae Goo is walking with Gook and Tae Il. He thinks, “I saw the employees change shifts. I should be okay.” His face doesn’t look so certain. Gook gets Dae Goo’s attention and Tae Il asks Dae Goo why he’s at the Morgue. Dae Goo says it’s because he just wanted to see them. Gook’s surprised that he’s saying something nice. That should immediately make them suspicious.

[Episode 9: Top Secret.]

Gook wakes up and puts his glasses on. He wonders where Soo Sun slept the night before. He starts to call, then hesitates, and calls anyway, a video chat. Accidentally. He asks where she slept, since she’s inside. Soo Sun starts to reply that she’s in her tent but then realizes that she’s not. Quickly she says that she’s at a friend’s house and hurries off the phone. Gook smiles and mutters, “How cute,” because she hung up on him. He has it bad.

Gook heads for the bathroom, where Tae Il has just gotten done taking a shower. Tae Il sees him and frowns and walks past him without saying anything. Aw, my boys are fighting! They need to make up! Gook mutters that Tae Il’s ignoring him because he’s ignoring Tae Il. Gook goes into the bathroom and Tae Il drinks some juice and looks unhappy. Because your partner/best friend said that he’d understand anything and then has been acting like a butthead since you confided in him. I hope Gook snaps out of it soon.

Soo Sun goes downstairs, muttering about the temperature of the apartment. She takes a moment to look at Pan Suk’s desk and all the chocolate wrappers. Also the picture of Pan Suk’s dead son, who is smiling brightly back. Soo Sun grabs her things and leaves the apartment. And she’s made the bed. Good girl.

Dae Goo’s at a coffee shop. Chief arrives.

Flashback. The Director of the orphanage announces that he has a guardian now. Now he can get tutoring and study all he wants. Dae Goo opens a box of books and revels over them. His roommate is amazed, too. The package reads, “From your guardian.” Dae Goo writes a thank you note to his guardian. Another present from his Guardian, for his birthday. How did she know his birthday? Oh, please, don’t let her be dirty. The note reads, “I wanted to get you a better gift, but I couldn't think of anything.” It’s nice clothes. Dae Goo uses the box to hold all of his correspondence with his guardian. Note: “Congratulations on entering high school.” Dae Goo writing,
“Dear Guardian,
I enjoyed the selection of mystery novels you sent me. Some of it was contrived, but it was a good choice overall. Why is she sending him mystery novels? Was she grooming him to go after Pan Suk even back then?

Another note: I experienced a lot of new things at the English language camp. English language camp? Wow. What is she planning? Or does she just feel bad for him? Maybe she knows who killed Oma and is trying to make up for it… And if it’s Congressman Moon Bae, who I *know* is evil, that would explain her reaction to him when she had that meeting with him. Oh! Maybe she’s a relative OR THE MOTHER of the girl that Moon Bae killed. There I go, jumping to conclusions. But that would completely explain everything…

Switch to adult Dae Goo: “I was accepted into law school. I'm leaving this place tomorrow. Thank you for everything.” We see Dae Goo leaving the orphanage.

Dae Goo leaving class when Chief finds him, holding a box. She asks if he’s Eun Dae Goo. Her voice is very kind. She opens the box to reveal all the cards he’s sent over time. She smiles and Dae Goo removes his glasses with surprise. He looks happy.

Back to the present. Dae Goo tells Chief that he thinks Pan Suk caught on. He explains that he ran into Pan Suk on his way out from identifying C.G.'s body. Chief stops drinking her coffee and says that Pan Suk caught on faster than she thought he would. That’s why he’s legendary. Dae Goo puts his hand over his face and massages his eyes, declaring that he feels like everything is falling apart. Boots is back and C.G. is dead. Chief looks genuinely concerned for Dae Goo’s welfare. She asks if he still suspects Pan Suk, since he’s seen what kind of detective Pan Suk is. I don’t think Chief thinks Pan Suk’s dirty, which to me points to her being a good guy. Please let that be true. I will be super angry at the writers if she's not.

Chief tells Dae Goo that she assigned him to be under Pan Suk because Dae Goo was so obstinate and certain that Pan Suk is dirty. Then she adds that she *still* doesn’t think (he’s dirty). Dae Goo interrupts declaring that Boots had the pendant in his hand. Boots mentioned Pan Suk twice. And most importantly... he called Pan Suk again for the first time in eleven years. Chief wonders if the pendant is something vulnerable the suspect is holding over Pan Suk’s head. Dae Goo can’t believe that Chief is defending Pan Suk. He asks her if she thinks all desperate criminals should be forgiven. That’s not what Chief is saying. Dae Goo insists that Pan Suk was the one who insisted on Oma’s testimony to begin with. He stops because he’s started to get loud. It’s obvious that Chief feels for him. Unless Chief’s a terrific actress, but I like my theory of why she became Ji Yong’s benefactor. If her daughter was killed, she wouldn’t have an heir, someone to mother, and Ji Yong needed a mother.

Dae Goo sighs and calms himself. He declares that he can't be sentimental like she is. Which means that they’ve probably had this argument many times before. It also explains his half of the conversations we’ve heard, where he’s trying to convince her that Pan Suk is dirty. He declares that this is the first chance in eleven years and if he misses this chance, Oma’s case will remain unsolved forever. Unless you get Pan Suk *to help* you. Dae Goo says that he can't let that happen. No matter what, he has to get him (not sure if that’s Boots or Pan Suk that he’s talking about) with his own hands. Dae Goo’s starting to get emotional. He stops and looks down. He’s trying hard not to cry.

Chief reminds Dae Goo of their promise. He swallows and looks at her. No matter what, the suspect must be judged according to the law. The promise that he wouldn't take revenge with his own hands. He must keep that promise. I feel like Chief has lumped herself into that promise, too. Chief’s voice starts to break as she tells him to hurry up and answer her. Aw, Chief really cares for him. Dae Goo blinks a lot before he answers, “Yes.”

Soo Sun enters the station, still looking cold. Don’t tell me she’s going to get sick… Tae Il and Dae Goo are right behind her. Till asks her if she was okay with all the rain the night before. Where did she sleep? Dae Goo grimaces because he knows the answer – And he’s jealous. Soo Sun lies and says that she stayed at a friend’s house. Dae Goo’s surprised by that answer. She and Pan Suk are friends now?! But *I* like her. How can she like Pan Suk?! Tae Il touches Soo Sun’s forehead, asking if she’s sick. He tells her that she looks pale. She thinks she might be getting a cold. But she’s all business, wondering about the autopsy results. Dae Goo actually squirms during their conversation, but it looks more because of his feelings for her and feeling bad that she might be sick. Which, of course, he doesn’t care about at all. They head upstairs and Dae Goo looks miserable.

The sons of poor dead Father are sitting, waiting for the autopsy results. Pan Suk and Gook are waiting for the others to arrive. Eung Do is sitting at the table with the sons. As they do, Dae Goo gives Pan Suk a bow and notices how Pan Suk is definitely staring at him. Pan Suk looks over the autopsy results and declares that the cause and time of death has been established. YSon immediately asks if he was right about ESon killing Father. ESon calls YSon a crazy bastard and asks if it was YSon. Pan Suk declares that the cause of death was indeed head trauma. The time of death was 11am *the day before.* It was at least 26 hours before he was found.

Everyone processes the news. ESon stares at YSon. YSon asks what that means, since ESon wasn't home at that time. ESon grabs YSon by his lapel and starts yelling at him, asking if he’s human and how could he do that?!! Dae Goo pries them apart. Eung Do yells at them to be quiet and listen up, since Pan Suk’s not finished yet. Pan Suk says it’s correct that YSon was the only one home, but he never left his computer. The sons don’t understand then how Father died. Who killed him, since he would have had fractures if he fell.

Flashback. Father looks at the phone ESon had given him and sighs, remembering their argument. Phone rings and Father presses on the answer button, not realizing that he needs to slide it to answer. He goes in to ask YSon to help him, but YSon is consumed with his game. Father is washing his dirty shoes. He puts them in the sun to dry. The phone rings again and he tries to answer. He turns to asks YSon again for help, slips on the soap and doesn’t have time to catch himself before he cracks his head open. Poor Father tries to get YSon’s attention and tries to answer as ESon calls, but he can’t answer the phone. Father goes unconscious while ESon calls again.

Back at the station, both sons are stunned by the news. ESon asks if Pan Suk’s writing a novel, but Pan Suk explains that the phone had never been used, but there are fingerprints all over it. And Father likely didn’t protect himself because he didn’t want to break the phone. The death of Father, Song Ki Deuk, is ruled a fatal accident due to slipping and falling. They leave to sons to sit in stunned silence.

The team goes out to lunch after that one. Eung Do declares that the cause of it all \was a lack of having a dutiful son. Sad, but true. Gook and Tae Il are still fighting and Soo Sun’s color is definitely off. After lunch Gook calls him Mom and makes nice. He asks for pickled plums, since hers are the best. Tae Il sits at his desk and almost calls him Mom. Dae Goo composes at text that he’ll never send. He asks Oma if she met Appa there? Is Appa good to her? Is she happier than when she lived with him? And you are determined to rip my heart out, Ji Yong! Dae Goo sighs and erases it all.

Pan Suk’s sitting in his car, thinking about meeting Ji Yong and meeting Dae Goo. Ji Yong running away after Oma’s murder. Dae Goo mentioning Oma’s murder and then asking him, “What right do you have? What right?” Pan Suk looks very burdened. Gook approaches and ends up inviting Pan Suk home. Pan Suk asks where the bathroom is. I wonder what he’s after. He asks Gook which toothbrush is Dae Goo's. After Gook points it out, Pan Suk bags it and then tells Gook to lie, saying that he dropped the toothbrush in the toilet by accident and threw it away. Gook’s worried about making Dae Goo mad. Pan Suk heads to Dae Goo’s room and tries to go through the desk and his computer, but both are locked. Gook says that he feels extremely uncomfortable and that he’s leaving. Pan Suk decides to go with him. He reminds Gook that he was never there. Pan Suk leaves and Gook wonders if Dae Goo might be his son, since Pan Suk’s taking the toothbrush probably for a DNA test. Then he shakes that idea off, telling himself that he’s been watching too many dramas. Heh.

Pan Suk has indeed taken the toothbrush for DNA analysis. Eung Do finds him in the conference room thinking. He asks what Pan Suk’s doing. Pan Suk tells Eung Do about the DNA test and Eung Do thinks it’s a good thing. As detectives, we shouldn’t ignore our gut. Then he reminds Pan Suk about his date with Sa Kyung, which he is almost late for. Pan Suk quickly changes into fancier duds for his fate.

Now sitting outside with Sa Kyung at a restaurant called Saigon, Pan Suk isn’t happy with how hectic and noisy it is. Aw, he wants their dates to be perfect. Sa Kyung doesn’t mind. As Pan Suk takes a drink of water, Sa Kyung asks why “that girl” was at his house. He’s surprised. She looks at him expectantly, waiting for an explanation. Pan Suk explains that he told her: Soo Sun is homeless because of fraud. She lives in a tent on the station rooftop. He just found out a few days ago and it was raining. What was he supposed to do? He couldn’t just ignore it.

By the end, he’s less desperate and more protesting in his defense of the situation. She still doesn’t answer. It almost looks like to me that she’s enjoying making him squirm and she’s trying to hold back a smile. Pan Suk protests that he left right after Sa Kyung did. There’s definitely a smile there as Sa Kyung asks if she asked him where he slept. Pan Suk mutters that he thought she asked and looks away. Still teasing him with a straight face, Sa Kyung asks if Soo Sun is going to be sleeping there whenever it rains. Pan Suk grimaces and says that it’s not like *that* and she'll find a place before then. He looks down, annoyed that his act of kindness has become a big deal. Sa Kyung lets herself smile and says that it’s fine then.

Sa Kyung changes the subject, asking how Pan Suk found the restaurant. He said he did blog research. If you type “good restaurant with oppa,” there are tons of results. I roll at that one. He *is* clever. His examples: “"I went to a good restaurant with Oppa in Itaewon today.” “I went to a good restaurant in Gangnam with Oppa today.” He chuckles and is geeky in his enthusiasm in explaining to her what he was able to find. Sa Kyung tries to keep a straight face. Pan Suk remarks that it’s weird, though, they always go to good restaurants with an oppa. She can’t keep the straight face anymore and laughs.

The food arrives. There’s something clear that looks like it could be for wrapping the veggies and such. Pan Suk picks one up and crunches it as Sa Kyung smiles. She takes one of the wraps and soaks it in the bowl of water provided, without saying a word. Pan Suk follows her example and burns himself on the water. His wrap is really sad. Sa Kyung gives him hers and tells him to eat… Oppa. And I laugh. They are too cute. Pan Suk looks at her totally surprised and then asks her why she’s saying that, calling her Madame Kim. Cute noona joke! They both start laughing. Sa Kyung gives Pan Suk a tutorial in how to make a wrap using the rice paper. After she makes another one, he tells her that she can make the rolls, which gets a laugh out of both of them. And me.

After lunch, Pan Suk and Sa Kyung go walking around Seoul. She picks out some really hideous shirts for him to wear. He refuses. They eat ice cream. He calls her Smiley and lightly pinches her cheek in passing, which gets a laugh out of her. They are too cute! It’s gotten dark and they take shelter from the rain under an awning. A car drives by and Pan Suk blocks the splash from a passing car so Sa Kyung won’t get wet. As he grumbles at getting wet, Sa Kyung smiles at him fondly. Then he stops and looks at her, realizing that it's a moment. She leans in and kisses him. He smiles, they laugh and then they stand under the awning holding hands. So sweet! And I love that she's the one that's called the detente, since it seems like her anger is what drove them apart.

Next day. The team is loaded in the van chasing Park Bong Jin, a suspect in a robbery that occurred three months ago at the Yeoksamdong Villa. They get a tip on where Robber is hiding. Dae Goo and Soo Sun cover the emergency stairwell. Gook and Tae Il head to the roof to assess the situation. Pan Suk and Eung Do emerge on the roof, where they see Tae Il walking slowly backward with his baton outstretched. And Gook’s gotten taken hostage with a huge knife yet again. Eung Do asks Gook what happened – with the tone of ‘again?’ – and Gook apologizes.

Suspect starts to go down the stairs. Dae Goo and Soo Sun are coming up. Robber sees them and threatens to stab Gook. Pan Suk tells Dae Goo and Soo Sun to back off. Gook grabs a hold of the railing and won’t let go. Robber beats him several times in the head with the knife, trying to get Gook to let go. Gook cries that since he’s become a detective, he’s been a hostage three times. He’s not going to let go even if Robber kills him. Pan Suk tells Gook to let go. So does Tae Il. Tae Il tells Gook that this isn’t like him. Gook snaps back, asking Tae Il if he’s supposed to get dragged away like an idiot… Is that more like him? Tae Il asks Gook what his problem is and to get a grip. And then Gook spills Tae Il’s secret: he used to be a doctor before he became a detective. That’s what the secret was? Wow, Gook. No one, not even Pan Suk knew.

Gook turns to Robber and tells Robber to stab him. He doesn't want to be a burden on his team anymore. He begs Robber to stab him in the gut. Tae Il looks like he wants to stab Gook for being so stupid. Robber doesn’t understand what’s happening. Then Gook shoves Robber so that he slams up against to opposite wall, knocking the knife from Robber’s hand. They end up toppling down the stairs together, with Robber getting handcuffed by Dae Goo. Pan Suk has a small smile as he looks at his kid, Gook.

Later at the station, Tae Il is getting some coffee. Gook limps over to him and apologizes. He didn’t mean to reveal his secret. Tae Il’s not really over it, and replies that as long as Gook knows what he did. Love the Korean guilt trip. As long as you know what you did... I don't forgive you, but as long as you know... Gook says that he used to be known as an amazing guy in his hometown (Buyeo), but he started comparing himself with Tae Il... When he passed the police exam, his family threw him a party, called him a genius… but now he’s such a loser. Gook starts slapping himself in the head. Tae Il tells him that Gook abusing himself won’t abate his anger. Tae Il asks if Gook knows what it feels like to be betrayed by a trusted friend and declares that he (Tae Il) is the idiot. He (Tae Il) should have just revealed Gook’s secret at the same time. Gook protests, begging Tae Il not to do that; how would he face Soo Sun then?

Tae Il tells Gook to sit. He shoves Gook down onto the couch and pulls out some medicine. He examines Gook’s ankle and gives him directions on what to do to help it heal. Gook declares that as person, Tae Il is annoyingly perfect. Tae Il responds that he knows that he’s perfect. Tae Il hurts Gook a little as payback as he wraps his ankle. And all is right with the world because Gook and Tae Il are friends again.

Nam Sun (Soo Sun’s brother) is waiting by the station. Soo Sun sneaks up on him. And he hasn’t aged at all… considering it’s the same actor. After teasing each other, she takes him for some dessert. As they eat their dessert, he tells Soo Sun that she’s gotten louder. She asks him if anything else has changed. He tells her that she looks… older, rotted. Heh. Twerpy brothers. Then he comments again about how he *hasn’t* changed. Except for the haircut and a little facial hair… She’s completely wilted.

Nam Sun notices Dae Goo walking by and remarks how it’s *him* again. Isn't that Kim Ji Yong? Soo Sun just blinks. Hyung clarifies: Bomha Middle School, eighth grader. She asks him if he thinks Dae Goo looks like Ji Yong. Nam Sun’s certain it’s Ji Yong, since he saw Ji Yong in Masan before.

Soo Sun is now in the car with Dae Goo. She’s quiet, thinking about what hyung said. She asks him why he doesn’t wear his glasses, since they suit him. Using her best coaxing voice, she tries to get him to put them on. Why would he fall for that since they almost got him busted before? Stoically, he declares he doesn’t have his glasses. She tries to tease them out of him. He snaps that he doesn’t. She asks him if he’s mad at her, since he’s being cold. Even though it just seems like normal Dae Goo. She tells him to talk, since they’re going to be there a while and it will just make things uncomfortable. He harshly asks if he’s ever been nice to her. She stops smiling and replies, “No.” Dae Goo says, “Then?” asking why she’s expecting something different. She answers, that he wasn’t nice but he was never this cold before. Oh, Soo Sun, if you only knew how he really feels. Dae Goo is having a hard time right now and now he’s got emotional attachments to boot.

Dae Goo replies that she must have been sick with bird flu. Since she’s a birdbrain. She grimaces, holding her temper and replies that she doesn’t have a cold anymore. He looks at her and she tells him to forget it. Now she’s mad. Dae Goo spots their suspect – Lee Jong Gi – in his rearview mirror and pulls Soo Sun down so that the suspect doesn’t see them staking him out. After a minute, Dae Goo looks up, only to find Jong Gi looking in the window at them. Heh! Suspect takes off running. Dae Goo and Soo Sun run after him. Soo Sun’s shoes come untied and she trips and falls. Suspect eventually finds a motorcycle and drives off.

Soo Sun catches up with Dae Goo. He notices Soo Sun’s scraped up arm and points it out, asking if she fell. Then he calls her clumsy. She snatches away her arm and mutters about her stupid shoelaces. She starts to retie her shoe, when Dae Goo stops her. He kneels down and ties them for her, with the knot like he did when he was a kid and they were in the rain. Soo Sun knows it’s him now. She stares down at her shoes. Dae Goo stands up and starts to walk away, but she says his name, Kim Ji Yong. He denies it, but she’s not going to let it go this time. Should just kiss her… that seems to give her amnesia. She says that it’s him and her brother saw him, too. He mutters, “damn it,” because he gave himself away with the shoelaces. She declares he is and he says he isn’t. Then he threatens her with another kiss if she doesn’t stop. Doesn’t she remember the last time he kissed her? Does she want him to kiss her again? Because he will if she asks again. Ask again! There’s a pause and he walks away.

Congressman Moon Bae in his office, signing things. Knock at the door. In walks Boots. I KNEW HE WAS DIRTY!!! Moon Bae is surprised to see Boots. So I guess Boots didn’t tell him that he was back in Seoul. Bumping off C.G. was an independent action, then. Boots bows to Moon Bae and asks if he’s been well. Moon Bae asks why he’s there. Is he there for a short visit? Boots replies that he’s returned for good. Moon Bae laughs, saying that Boots has made a foolish decision. Boots tells Moon Bae that there’s something he should know: 11 years ago, he couldn’t kill that kid. Moon Bae looks like his head is about to explode as he gasps, “What are you saying?” He jumps up and repeats the question. Boots laughs and says that it’s not like Moon Bae to get rattled. Moon Bae sputters but Boots tells him not to worry since he knows where the kid is. If Moon Bae gives him the go ahead, he (Boots) can get rid of him anytime. Moon Bae asks where the kid is now.

Pan Suk has the DNA results. He pauses for a moment before looking at them. results: Likelihood of DNA match: 99.99943325%. Pan Suk is stunned, his suspicions confirmed. He slowly walks into the precinct. Dae Goo is working at his laptop. Pan Suk sits and looks at him, now seeing Ji Yong in Dae Goo’s place. He looks like he wants to cry right then. He thinks about the last time they spoke: “She didn't want to, but you convinced her to take the stand. You should have kept your promise.” Almost a whisper, Pan Suk says Dae Goo’s name and says that they should talk. And Pan Suk’s eyes are misty.

They head out to the roof. Dae Goo looks nervous. As Pan Suk turns around, his eyes are watery. Which makes me cry. He calls Dae Goo Ji Yong and Dae Goo sees what he’s holding. He knows he’s busted. Pan Suk tells Dae Goo/Ji Yong, “Thank you for being alive. For growing up so well. Thank you so much.” In the end, Pan Suk can barely get the words out, he’s so overcome. Dae Goo is clearly freaking out but he says that he doesn’t know what Pan Suk is talking about. Pan Suk says that he looked for Dae Goo everywhere. He thought something bad happened. “It was hard on me.” It haunted me, that’s what you should be saying, although how you just said that says it, too. Dae Goo declares that he is not Ji Yong.

Pan Suk tells Dae Goo that he understands why Dae Goo’s rejecting and denying the truth with him. It was his fault Ji Yong’s mother died. Pan Suk looks pained as he says this. He *lost the pendant that day, too.* But Dae Goo's not paying attention to that part, the part where Pan Suk is showing how he's not dirty. Fist clench out of Dae Goo. The almost out-of-control furious Dae Goo starts talking, saying that he’s *not* Ji Yong. Dae Goo tries to leave but Pan Suk says that no matter how much he denies it, the DNA report says that he’s Ji Yong. Dae Goo starts screaming that it’s not him and Pan Suk should believe him! He should just live like that for the rest of his life and die not knowing! Those last words he spits and it’s like he’s stabbed Pan Suk.

Dae Goo leaves the roof and has to hold onto the wall to keep standing.

Soo Sun’s thinking. He's definitely Ji Yong. She packs up her things and heads for his house. She’s cheery. He looks wreaked and declares that he’s busy. She uses her foot to stop the door. She just wants 30 minutes. Ten minutes! He lets her in. Gook and Tae Il are out buying something. He tells her she has nine minutes and thirty seconds left. She says that no matter how much she thinks about it, she can't let it go. He’s definitely Kim Ji Yong. As he turns around, she holds up a hand and declares, “No kiss.” She has 8 minutes. Dae Goo looks spent, almost broken. She says that she just doesn't understand. When his mother died and he disappeared, she was so worried. Dae Goo looks away. She asks again if he’s Kim Ji Yong. Dae Goo answers, “Five minutes.” Is there a reason he has to hide his identity? He sighs and says, “Four minutes.” She says that she won't ask anymore if he needs to hide his identity, but is she right? A long pause as they look at each other. Three minutes. His watch is going a lot faster than mine is, because it’s only been about a minute and a half. She gets frustrated and decides to go.

As Soo Sun turns around, Dae Goo declares, “I'll say it again, I'm not Kim Ji Yong.” But… he does know him a little. Ji Yong wanted Dae Goo to tell her. Really, Dae Goo? I’m *friends* with him… Aw, he really wants her to know… But doesn’t know how to admit it. Dae Goo tells her that she figured it out with her little bird brain this time. She’s right. He has a reason to hide. So, don't ask for the time being and don't tell anyone. Soo Sun nods and agrees. Then she plays the game and tells Dae Goo to tell his friend, Ji Yong, that she understands. He tells her to leave and his face is so tired and sad.

Soo Sun asks him if he’s eaten. She hasn’t eaten yet. They go out and eat, complete with Soju. She’s just smiling at him. He asks her ‘What?’ because it’s always unnerving when someone just looks at you and smiles without saying anything. She asks him why he thinks she’s smiling. He replies that it’s because she’s mentally out of it. She can’t stop smiling and declares that she’s happy. He looks at her. She declares that she thought he… er, his friend, Ji Yong, had died. Everyone in Masan thought so. After his friend's mother died and his friend went missing... all of Masan was in a shock and in complete turmoil. Dae Goo looks away and takes a drink of Soju.

Soo Sun continues. She regretted it so much. So, he needs to tell his friend Ji Yong... She was always sorry for saying that about his mom in front of school. Dae Goo replies, “It's fine,” and then quickly corrects himself to say that Ji Yong's fine with it…. Ji Yong said. She tries to say something else and he hisses at her and tells her to stop. No more questions. She wants to know one more thing. How did his friend grow up? Did he live in an orphanage? Is that why he changed his name? Dae Goo declares that she’s really using her brain today, to figure all that out. She says that she heard he grew up in an orphanage from Eung Do. He snaps at her to not look at him like that. He was lucky and had a great director and went to college because I had a guardian. It wasn't a heartless world. She just smiles and says, “Thank goodness.”

Soo Sun starts with one last... and Dae Goo interrupts her, snapping that it’s enough, stop. No more. He’s starting to get irritated. She pleads that he let her say one last thing, okay? He needs to tell his friend, Ji Yong, if he needs her, he can call her anytime. Dae Goo’s just looking at her, expressionless. She adds that for the time being, she’ll forgive him for not calling her noona. Dae Goo scoffs at that idea. Noona, his ass. She’s about to thump him for being disrespectful but stops, because today is special. He’s trying to go back to his food but she says that his friend Ji Yong is two years younger than she is and used to call her noona. Aw, she remembers that. Soo Sun says that she’ll forgive him and keep his identity a secret from Gook and Tae Il. She repeats that anytime Ji Yong needs her, he just needs to call.

Dae Goo looks a little emotional now. Which is understandable because for the first time in 11 years, he’s not alone. And someone knows *who* he is, really who he is, and is saying that she’s there for him, no matter what. Soo Sun says that she doesn’t know what it's about but she’ll keep his secret. For example... If he ever needs a confidante or a favor, Dae Goo should tell Ji Yong to call her, okay? She’s always on Kim Ji Yong's side. Soo Sun declares that she’s done and suggests that they toast. Dae Goo’s eyes look really red, like he’s trying hard not to cry. She tells him to eat quickly, or the noodles will swell.

They’re walking back to his apartment. He tells her to go on. She nods and agrees. He starts to head inside and she reaches over and grabs him around the waist and gives him a back hug. And I have something in my eye. She tells him, “Thank you. Thank you so much.” She’s proud of him. He doesn’t know what to do. He starts to try to push her hands away, asking why she’s doing this all of a sudden. She won’t let him, though. She tells him that she’s so proud. He leaves his hand on hers and finally, finally starts to cry.

Thoughts

Wow, I am glad that I got a week behind because to wait a whole week before being able to watch the next episode would be torturous!

Hooray! Dae Goo’s secret is finally out to the two most important people: Pan Suk and Soo Sun. And now that Soo Sun knows, I think she and the Chief will be able to sway Dae Goo to believe that Pan Suk isn’t dirty. Everything about Pan Suk’s reaction shows that he isn’t dirty: from crying to thanking him for being alive, to thanking him for growing up well. I knew Pan Suk wasn’t dirty, but it’s nice to see that I’m right. And I can picture Dae Goo demanding answers: how did Boots get the pendant?! And Pan Suk giving him the right ones so that Dae Goo can finally let it go. There might even be crying as Dae Goo lets it go, with Pan Suk comforting him like a father. Which would be awesome. The thought of that makes me all squishy on the inside.

So what did we find out this episode?
  1. Tae Il’s big secret is that he used to be a doctor before he was a policeman. So where did he come across Sa Kyung, then? I’m sure that’s where they must have met, even though I still suspect that he was one of flings to pass the time. I do have a couple of questions, though: What happened between Tae Il and his mother? He thought about calling and then didn’t, which means that they’ve had a falling out. Could it be over him not being a doctor anymore, or his brother? I suspect that it might be over both, and Tae Il decided to become a policeman because of what happened to his brother.
  2. Chief has been Ji Yong’s benefactor since he was little. I’m choosing to believe my theory: that she’s somehow related to the girl that was murdered, the murder that Oma witnessed, and she sought out Dae Goo to somehow make herself feel better and somehow make up for costing him his Oma. But with my theory, I still have some questions:
    1. Why is she in Gangnam? Is it because she suspects that it’s Congressman Moon Bae? Is that why she doesn’t like the man, beyond the fact that he’s slimy?
    2. Why wouldn’t she have told Dae Goo her suspicions about Moon Bae? To protect him?
    3. Does this mean that Moon Bae changed his name, too? Because wouldn’t Pan Suk/Dae Goo have *known* the name of the man who Oma was set to testify against?
    4. She seems certain that Pan Suk isn’t dirty. Has she been trying to convince Dae Goo all this time?
    5. Was that promise not to take the law into your own hands for her as well?
    6. Did Dae Goo finish law school?
    7. When Chief revealed herself, did she tell Dae Goo how they were connected?
    8. When did Dae Goo confide in her about his suspicions about Pan Suk?
  3. Pan Suk finally knows that Dae Goo is Ji Yong. How is going to interact with him now? And how *did* he lose the pendant, which Soo Sun has. And I bet she’s going to reveal this fact after she hears them fighting over it. Too bad it won’t probably have any useable fingerprints left on it…
  4. How sad was Dae Goo’s text to Oma? Are you happier now then when we were together? Rip my heart out!
  5. Pan Suk and Sa Kyung are on their way to reconciliation, which is oh, so awesome! It has been many years and I don’t think that they ever stopped loving each other, so it doesn’t feel contrived or like it’s not possible. She blamed him because of his job, but now she understands the job. I still wonder if the night their son died had something to do with Ji Yong, and if so, how is that going to play out? Will Pan Suk tell her? How will she react?
  6. Soo Sun finally knows and I love how she reacted to it. I am so glad that she knows. Now it’s even more reason for her to move in so they can spend late nights planning their strategy in the privacy of their own room. Having her there can help Dae Goo sleep without anything on and he won’t feel so much like that scared 15-year-old anymore.
  7. Moon Bae is evil. Like I called it from the first time I saw him. It seems as though Boots is an assassin for hire, which is why Moon Bae didn’t keep tabs on him. And is Moon Bae going to go try to pump Dae Goo for info before he gives the go-ahead to Boots to bump Dae Goo off?
Love how the writers are having this all unfold and how the principals are stepping on all the right beats.

One last thought… is it just me, but does Go Ara have really big hands and feet? I’ve noticed how her hands, while dainty, are bigger than normal, but when she stuck her foot in the door, I was just struck at how long her foot was… I’m not hating (I have long fingers, too). Just something I noticed.
