You're All Surrounded Episode 6 Recap

The episode starts with Pan Suk in jail. He’s chilling in the cell, laying on the floor, waiting for when he’s released. Not stressing at all. Eung Do and the gang arrive with the arrest warrant for Shin Myung.

As Shin Myung is leaving his house, they arrive. Soo Sun presents him with the arrest warrant – through a closed window – and motions for him to get out of his car. He sits there so Dae Goo opens up the door and pulls him out. He slaps the cuffs on Shin Myung as he reads Shin Myung his rights. And I find it interesting that Shin Myung is still in the country, considering Frog didn’t issue the no-fly order. I guess the twat was arrogant enough to think he’d get away with it again. I really liked it – in spite of myself – when Dae Goo shoved the arrest warrant in the guy’s face. Shin Myung wears a cocky sneer as Dae Goo reads him his rights. Wonder what that means? Hi-fives from everyone but Pan Suk, who sighs happily.

Dae Goo meets with a detective, trying to hunt down creepy threat guy who’s been missing for 6 years. Dae Goo adds that he was working with a different agency up until a month ago, but they’d gotten nowhere. Does this mean no more S?

Pan Suk is waiting on the steps of Sa Kyung’s apartment building. He stands when she arrives. She barely wants to look at him and doesn’t even let him tell her about the arrest. She’s already heard. He looks pleased, in his stone-faced way. She tells him, “Good job,” and tries to go in. He asks her to dinner. He’s hopeful. She replies that she doesn't feel like it as usual. Way to kick a puppy. But she relents a little and asks him for a drink instead. At the restaurant – with meat! – they don’t look at each other and tender music plays. Pan Suk says he’s always wondered why she came to Gangnam Station, since she must have known he was there. She sighs and asks him why he thinks she came. He doesn’t know. He says that it seems that from the moment they met until now, he’s never known her, but he wish he did. Wow. That’s deep and sad. So sad for him. She glances over at his sadness. She tells him that tonight, they should just drink.

After drinks, Pan Suk tries to hail a taxi with no luck. Sa Kyung looks absolutely broken. Pan Suk’s trying to be chipper. She suddenly leans on him. And I slap my chest I feel so bad for both of them. Pan Suk just stops, not wanting to move for fear of ending this moment. Sa Kyung cries for their boy, saying she misses him so much. Pan Suk hesitantly reaches up to pat her on the back as she cries and tries not to cry himself.

Dae Goo’s trying to fall asleep, flipping through channels. And I want this projector TV. Split screen to Pan Suk, who is lying on his couch, trying to sleep. They are so much alike. They both look in their fridge. Pan Suk does some laundry while Dae Goo makes some instant ramen. They both take some aspirin. Pan Suk looks in his box and pulls out a tape. He settles into bed as he watches a video of Joon Hee with the robot toy. He lets himself laugh as he thinks about his son and closes his eyes to sleep. Dae Goo settles in to sleep as a cartoon plays.

Boots at the school. Ji Yong running. Now Ji Yong’s an adult – Dae Goo – and Boots is chasing him through the back alleys of a poor neighborhood. Dae Goo ends up at a dead end and Boots smiles as he comes in for the kill. Dae Goo wakes, sweating. No wonder he has to sleep with some noise on. Dae Goo reaches down and pries his right hand open. It’s balled into a fist with his nail digging into his palm. He pants and tries to get over it.

[Episode 6: The Sea Within My Old Drawer.]

Gangnam Police Station. Pan Suk storms in as Eung Do’s voiceover declares that Kim Shin Myung was released. The “true perpetrator” was caught. And who’s sitting in the cell? The driver, Lee Young Gu. Pan Suk stares at the guy and Driver won’t look at him. Pan Suk’s face is twitching. He goes to see Frog, kicking in Frog’s door. He pulls Frog out of his seat *by his tie.* And I am loving that! Pan Suk has Frog by the lapel and demands to know how Shin Myung could be released. He asks how Driver could be the guy. Frog protests and Eung Do’s there to hold Pan Suk back. Pan Suk asks what Frog’s thinking! He yells at Frog that he’s never thought the law was just, but at least Frog should have conscience.

Frog gets Pan Suk to let him go and then cold cocks him. Pan Suk looks at the blood from his lip. Frog calls Pan Suk a crazy bastard and asks where he thinks they are. It’s not important who died. The important thing is who killed him. And how can the other prosecutors just let him spout this stuff? They’re there hearing it. Pan Suk punches him back, knocking Frog to the floor. Eung Do holds him back from doing anything else.

And that one punch lands Frog in the hospital with a concussion. He’s ‘unconscious.’ Doctor declares that Frog has a concussion. Frog wakes and is asks how many stitches he has. Frog declares that he’s going to have Pan Suk arrested for assault. You’ll have to arrest yourself, too, since you threw the first punch. Pan Suk can’t believe that this is the first thing that Frog is saying after waking up. He tells Frog to go ahead and do it, which earns a slap from Eung Do. Pan Suk says that he’s going to arrest Shin Myung again.

Frog tells Pan Suk that idiots with bad brains always show off their stupidity. Doesn't he get it? Frog’s going to make sure that Pan Suk is forced to quit. He tells his subordinate to get the indictment ready and to call the media. Pan Suk can’t believe Frog’s going to take it that far.

Dae Goo’s on his way to the orphanage. What orphanage? He’s talking on his phone to someone. Since Boots is back, he’s going to warn the Director. Why doesn’t he just *call* the Director? Flashback. Ji Yong at a children’s home, telling the Director that he can’t remember anything about his past. Not his name, age, where he lived… So I guess that’s how he got his new name. Director turns around to call the police but Ji Yong is gone. Another home. Ji Yong with the same story. That Director asks if he’s gone to the police. Ji Yong leaves without another word. Third home. He asks Director (a woman this time) if he just can’t live there without trying to find out who he is. Director puts down her pen and asks if he’s eaten. This where he ended up. And I wonder if he eventually told Director what’s going on. I suspect so, since he’s going there to warn her. Dae Goo – now at the home – fingers things fondly.

Tea with the Director. He apologies for not visiting more. Director tells him that the kids there view him as a role model. And a really sweet smile from Dae Goo. He needs to smile more. He says that he’s there for a favor and Director suspected as much. He pulls out Creepy Guy’s picture and says that someone might come asking about him. He asks her not to tell about a child who came there eleven years ago and got a new identity. Director says that a guy who claimed he was a police officer was there looking for him (with a picture of him as a child) not even 10 minutes ago. Dae Goo immediately rushes outside to look for the guy. Way to blow your cover yourself, Dae Goo. He spots a guy with a scar on his face.

Dae Goo runs over and grabs the guy, who protests. Dae Goo realizes that it’s not the same voice as Boots. He apologizes and walks away. Boots *is* there and spots Dae Goo, but Dae Goo doesn’t see him. Boots thinks, “Bingo” and puts the two identities together (he even knows Dae Goo’s new name). Crap on a cracker! But at least that says that the past and their current case are connected. How else would Boots know Dae Goo’s current identity?

Dae Goo rushes back inside and asks Director if the man had a burn scar on his face. Director didn’t remember him with one. Dae Goo tries not to wig. Driving home, he gets a call from S. He declares that he was too late and Boots had already been there. But it wasn’t Park Seung Oh (Creepy Guy). He remarks about how the guy didn’t have the burn scar. He must have had plastic surgery. Dae Goo wonders why Boots is looking for him again.

Police Station. Dae Goo’s getting a cola but staring off into space, trying really hard not to freak out that Boots is coming for him. Someone sneaks up behind him and he grabs – Soo Sun – and slams her into the soda machine. He yells at her for playing a joke and storms away. She sputters that she should be the mad one and he should just apologize. Then she tells “Angry Dae Goo” to wait for her. And I love her. Angry Dae Goo. Heh. They notice the reporters out front.

Inside, Gook and Tae Il are forlornly looking at the new on a laptop. Soo Sun asks what’s going on. Gook can’t believe that they haven’t heard… Kim Sa Kyung was released. His driver Lee Young Gu confessed that he did it. Neither of them can believe it. Gook replies that this is why they’re going crazy. Tae Il adds that they have a bigger problem: Pan Suk assaulted Frog and it’s in the news.

Meeting with department heads. Chief is hot! She’s yelling. Pan Suk apologizes. Chief wonders how Pan Suk could have become a detective and Team Leader if he can't control his emotions. And how could he disappoint her like this? Pan Suk apologizes again. Chief sighs and declares that they’re in a crisis now because of it. Due to his reckless behavior, they’re going to lose the right to investigate independently again. They *need* citizen confidence in the police! Pan Suk meekly apologizes again. Frog asks him if he’s become a parrot suddenly? That was funny. At least he’s not yelling. Isn't there anything else he can say?

There’s a knock at the door. Two detectives enter, not relishing what they have to do: arrest Pan Suk. Chief sighs. They have to comply. Pan Suk apologizes again. Chief orders Pan Suk’s entire team suspended and the investigation turned over to Team 1. Pan Suk protests that Driver is not the perpetrator. Chief slams her hand on the table again and asks him why he’s not getting this?! Frog stands, rubs his eyebrow and tells Pan Suk that the misery he’s going through now is the consequence of his mistakes. Pan Suk should reflect thoroughly on his pride, arrogance and being overbearing, while he’s in the holding cell. Chief grimaces, hating what’s being said. Sa Kyung looks like she wants to throw up.

Pan Suk goes off to be booked. He can’t even look at his kids. They want to follow him, but Frog stops them.

Pan Suk turns over all his stuff and is put in a cell. Eung Do looks sad and tells him to get some rest. He’ll go talk to Frog. Pan Suk tells Eung Do not to bother. He doesn’t want Eung Do to bow his head to that jerk. Eung Do replies that it's only his body that bows, not his spirit. Wow, that’s deep. Love him! He adds that bowing to Frog is a hundred times better than Pan Suk quitting. Eung Do hates that the Chief seems to want to stay out of it all. Pan Suk tells Eung Do that he’ll go ahead and quit if they tell him to. He’s disgusted by it all. He tells Eung Do to go comfort the kids. Pan Suk sits on the floor of the cell and remarks that Toad has to be pretty excited. And his phone rings.

Dae Goo’s right around the corner, listening to everything. How did he escape Toad? He pulls out the cloned phone and checks the number. It’s Boots finally calling. But Pan Suk is locked up so he can’t answer the phone. (Instead, he’s now laughing with Eung Do.) Dae Goo struggles.

The rest of the gang is handing over all their research to Team 1, reluctantly. Toad orders the case closed. Toad declares that as of today, Team 3 (their team) is being disassembled. What? Isn’t that an over-reaction? And isn’t Eung Do still able to lead them? Toad orders them to stop investigating their cases and just wait for orders. But they can’t just sit around. They need to assist the other teams! So, don’t investigate anything! But help investigate things! Toad leaves as Eung Do arrives. He takes them out to eat. No one really feels like eating.

The gang is worried that Pan Suk will have to quit. Eung Do says that nothing’s definite. IA (the audit team as he calls it) needs to complete their investigation. Even though Toad just *closed* the case. Eung Do declares that the best way out of this is for Frog to change his mind. Soo Sun doesn’t see how any of this makes sense. Shin Myung was release and Pan Suk has been arrested. Dae Goo points out that Pan Suk used physical violence. Soo Sun retorts that it was just one punch and Frog hit Pan Suk, too. First, I might add. Dae Goo tells her to stop with her stupid chatter; Frog was injured, which is physical assault and a crime.

Tae Il chimes in that he agrees with Dae Goo. Pan Suk shouldn't have done that if he was considering the team. Jeez. That’s a bit of an overly high standard. Tae Il’s upset that the team might be broken up because of this. Eung Do tells them to go about assisting the other teams, but keep on investigating Kim Shin Myung. Gook doesn’t see the point. Soo Sun definitely thinks they need to make Shin Myung pay. Gook says the world isn’t going to change. Soo Sun starts to protest, mostly to herself, that the world *will* change. It will. And Dae Goo winces, like he hates that she’s having to face this harsh reality, that the bad guys don’t pay. Eung Do tells them to start eating. Soo Sun’s voice over declares that she couldn't answer Gook's question and if the world doesn't change, then what's the point of them being there investigating all night and unable to go home, or eat our first meal at 3pm? She’s the last to start eating.

Chief is meeting with Congressman Moon Bae. Who, if you don’t remember, I think is crooked. She has to apologize. She says that Pan Suk is deeply regretful and she’ll have him take responsibility. Practically smiling, Moon Bae wonders how he’s going to even be able to broach the idea of the police being able to investigate independently with his constituents. Chief replies, almost desperate, that the incident isn’t going to get any bigger, since there’s a lot of gossip about Frog (and Frog won’t want the spotlight). Moon Bae laughs and compliments her on being able to look confident even when she isn’t. Her hands twitch anxiously.

Sa Kyung goes to visit Pan Suk. She doesn’t look happy. And please don’t yell at him while he’s down. Please. He stands up when he sees her. She tells him she thought he’d be pacing. He replies that he’s a disgrace. She replies, “As long as you know.” Wow, woman, you need to relent. She tells him not to be too disappointed in the Chief, since the independent investigation issue is so important to her. Pan Suk replies that he’s not disappointed, since it *is* his fault. Then he asks if Sa Kyung’s finally satisfied, since she hated that he was a detective. She looks hurt by the question.

Sa Kyung declares (like he did earlier when they were in the elevator after that guy was outside her apartment), that she was going to try and hold back, but she can't. How can he say that? She thought he was sexy at one time, but he’s just a pill bug. Is he brainless? If he was going to quit so easily, he should have done it a long time ago, before their son died. She’s livid now, with tears brimming. Pan Suk’s no longer cavalier.

Sa Kyung tells Pan Suk that even though Joon Hee died, he didn't quit. Did he endure for so long just to give up because of a moron like Frog? He might have been a horrible father, but he’s a good detective and the world needs a detective like him in it. That’s what she wants. For him to get through this and arrest Kim Shin Myung again. Then she leaves. And as she goes, Driver arrives. When Pan Suk arrives, Driver says that he doesn’t remember him.

Gook and Tae Il are now out traipsing around Driver’s neighborhood, trying to find out why the guy would confess to something that he didn’t do. It’s hot and they’re sweaty and Gook is complaining. Ajumma wonders what that nice young man did that the police came looking for him. She says that Driver only has a sister, but she’s sick. Ajumma mentions that sister’s now expected to have surgery soon. And there’s the payoff.

Frog is still at the hospital. For stitches. Dae Goo sneaks into Frog’s room and borrows his wallet. He finds something.

Tae Il goes and finds Sister at the hospital. She asks if he’s a friend of her Oppa. She wonders if Oppa got dumped again. That’s the only reason why he disappears on her, since it’s just the two of them since their parents died. No wonder Driver kept that crap job. She asks Tae Il if he has a hyung and Tae Il sadly, reluctantly admits he does. Sister goes to the bathroom while Tae Il waits outside. He’s really uncomfortable. Dae Goo comes upon him. Tae Il explains that he’s there visiting Driver’s sister, but doesn’t want to say more. Dae Goo hands him an envelope to give Pan Suk; it will help Pan Suk get released.

Pan Suk is sitting in his cell, thinking. Gook’s voiceover that Sister is scheduled for heart valve surgery this Friday. Pan Suk decides to chat Driver up. He says they both know that Shin Myung was driving. Pan Suk says he’s not sure why Driver is taking the blame, not exactly. But if Driver think it's for his little sister, it’s not going to work out that way. They both know that truth. This gets Driver’s attention. He mentions Joon Hee and how he thought he was working hard to provide a safer world for his son. He thought it was all for his son, that he was being a good father. But, the best father in the world is a father who stays with his son. He always thought that there would be a next time. But then there wasn’t a next time. He thought he'd be there on Joon Hee’s first day of elementary school. His middle school graduation. When he leaves for college... He thought there would always be a next time. He tells Driver that the moment Sister will need him most is not the next time. It's now. Driver tries hard not to cry.

Tae Il calls Eung Do: Shin Myung has left for the airport. Eung Do can’t believe it. He tells Tae Il to go to the hospital and bring Hyun Mi if he can. Who’s Hyun Mi?

Dae Goo’s out on traffic patrol. He’s just caught a speeder and asks for her signature on the ticket. She signs it “Son of a bitch.” Without pausing, he tells her that she can go now, Ms. son of a bitch. She gets out of the car to yell at him, but right then, Soo Sun tells Dae Goo that Shin Myung is leaving the country. He immediately takes off running – instead of getting in his car – for the airport. Soo Sun follows after him – still not taking the car.

Gook is holding up traffic, looking for Easy Delivery driver, Kim Hyung Gu! He’s there to get the truck’s black box.

Dae Goo and Soo Sun are now at the airport, desperately looking for Shin Myung. The plane’s leaving for New York at 5:05. All Dae Goo needs to do is get the guy to hit him, then he can arrest him for assaulting a police officer. They finally spot Shin Myung up at the VVIP lounge.

Tae Il arrives at the station and passes Pan Suk Dae Goo’s envelope. Pan Suk reads it and laughs, remarking that Frog is an arrogant bastard. He gets Tae Il’s phone and calls Frog. Has he had his stitches removed?

Gook’s looking at the truck’s black box: it’s footage of Min Joon chasing a ball into the street and getting run over. But there’s also a glitch that doesn’t actually show the direct moment of impact.

Driver’s about to get transported. Tae Il arrives with Sister, Hyun Mi. Ah, Hyun Mi is Sister. He tells her that she shouldn’t be there; she should hurry up and go. She sadly says Oppa and asks why he’s wearing handcuffs. Is it because of her? With tears in her eyes, she says that she’d rather die than have Oppa become a bad person because of her. Rip my heart out, Hyun Mi! She’s so pathetic looking! Driver begs her to go back to the hospital. She walks off. Pan Suk’s there, also, and as Driver’s about to get into the van, he tells Pan Suk to wait.

Dae Goo’s getting the bad news about the black box footage. He and Soo Sun are waiting outside the VVIP Lounge. Girlfriend arrives to meet her Oppa (Shin Myung). Soo Sun gets a text from Eung Do telling her to go as far as grab his pants leg to stop him from leaving. Just get Shin Myung to punch Dae Goo; that will work. Shin Myung is extra smug about how he's going to get away with it. He exits the VVIP Lounge and greats the girl. Soo Sun runs in between them. Girl can’t believe it and asks Shin Myung if he’s cheating on her again. Soo Sun goes with it, grabbing him around the waist. She calls Shin Myung Oppa and declares that she was waiting for him. He’s not leaving is he? Girl doesn’t buy it and slaps Shin Myung before she stomps off. Guys from the VVIP Lounge come running out, but Dae Goo’s there with a skycap cart. He runs up behind Shin Myung and carries him away on the cart, with Soo Sun sitting on top of him.

Driver’s pulled something out of his wallet and given it to Pan Suk. Driver asks if it’s too late for him. Pan Suk promises that Driver will get out before Sister’s surgery. It’s a computer chip.

Back in the airport, Soo Sun declares that they just have to miss the flight. The VVIP guys catch up to them and hold Dae Goo off. Shin Myung arrogantly asks what he’s getting charged with. Dae Goo can’t say anything. But he doesn’t have to Eung Do is there. Finally. He holds up his phone, which has the video that Driver gave to Pan Suk. On it, he tells Driver that he killed a kid while driving drunk. It shows him bribing Driver to pay for Sister’s surgery. Shin Myung’s not so smug now and asks where they got this footage. Instead of answering, Eung Do tells Dae Goo and Soo Sun to arrest Shin Myung for the penalty of aggravated criminal activity and attempting to evade charges. She’s all too happy to comply.

They get back to the precinct and Pan Suk’s there congratulating Gook for a job well done. She rushes forward and has to stop herself from hugging him. And then she can’t stop herself and she hugs him. Pan Suk reacts like Dae Goo did when she kissed him; he stands there stiff and awkward for a moment. Eung Do starts to laugh. Soo Sun lets go. Shin Myung witnesses it all but then just gets up and leaves. Good jobs all around. Pan Suk asks them how they feel. The kids – minus Dae Goo, of course – declare they feel outstanding. He tells them that this is what it tastes like, the feeling of arresting a criminal they wanted desperately. He congratulates them and declares that they are finally rookie detectives. He’s smiling directly at Dae Goo when he says this last part. Dae Goo looks away and then walks into the locker room.

Pan Suk follows Dae Goo and mentions the envelope. He says that it was all because of the envelope. He thanks Dae Goo. Dae Goo, of course, is a butthead and replies that Pan Suk doesn’t have to thank him. He didn’t do it for Pan Suk; he did it for the team, so they wouldn’t break up. He declares that Pan Suk disappointed him with the incident. For Team Leader 3 who emphasized that strength was in teamwork, it's quite inappropriate. Does Pan Suk’s actions always differ from his words? Is he strict with others but lenient with himself? Wow, that’s scathing.

Dae Goo starts to leave but Pan Suk stops him. He says that he knows it’s bad timing to be asking, but… does Dae Goo have a problem with him? He’s had this attitude from the beginning. Does Dae Goo know him? Is Dae Goo busted? Staredown. Dae Goo gets out of it by declaring that every detective hopeful knows the legendary Seo Pan Suk.

But Pan Suk’s onto something now. Later, he looks at Dae Goo’s file. He looks up the House of Happiness (orphanage). This makes him wonder about something and so he leaves for the night. But he leaves Dae Goo’s file out, so Dae Goo finds it the next morning. He freaks a little, but then gets busy with his work. He pulls out some glasses so he can read the fine print. Soo Sun comes in and sees him and is struck by how much he reminds her of Ji Yong. She says his name, Kim Ji Yong. Dae Goo looks over at her and then quickly looks away, ripping off the glasses and trying to leave the room as soon as possible. But she stops him and asks him if he’s Ji Yong. Right as Pan Suk is walking up. So, Dae Goo does the only thing he can do: plants a kiss on Soo Sun. I have the same reaction as Pan Suk: complete shock. I think we both even jerked our arms in the reaction. And it’s an awkward k-drama kiss.

And as the credits roll, we get to see what was in the envelope: a receipt for the Long Night in the Heavenly Whorehouse. Should Pan Suk send it to his wife? Who keeps a receipt for something like that? Frog immediately orders Pan Suk’s release. And I guess that Frog’s not going to be harassing Pan Suk anymore. Heehee.

Thoughts

Wow - that was an emotional episode, right after an emotional episode! But several great things came out of it.

  1. It seems like Se Kyung is softening towards Pan Suk, which she should. It's really not his fault what happened. It was just a sad accident. But I wonder how long it happened after Ji Yong's situation.
  2. The romance part of things kicked off with Dae Goo planting one on Soo Sun. Of course, this wasn't really real *yet* and was his desperate attempt in not getting caught, but still...
  3. Soo Sun recognized him! He had to be wearing glasses, but she did. My question - why did he need the glasses just then and not when he's staring at hours upon hours of CCTV footage? I don't wear glasses all the time, but I do when I'm staring at my computer. I'm just saying...
  4. Pan Suk's starting to really get suspicious over Dae Goo's behavior. We're getting closer to the secret coming out.
  5. They really stuck it to that scumbag, Shin Myung! Awesome sauce indeed!
  6. Pan Suk was also able to stick it to Frog, who I really, really hate now. What a scumbag. Hopefully, that blackmail will be able to be used for years to come, now.

The episode highlights, in a lot of ways, but especially in the split screen section, just how much Dae Goo and Pan Suk are alike. And they are *so* alike, right down to their survivor's guilt and how they react to affection.

Other developments:
  1. Boots knows Dae Goo's new name and what he looks like. Director said he had no scar. How come we saw one, though? Different guy? They had the same voice? Or did he get that plastic surgery?
  2. I'm glad that things worked out because I would hate to see Soo Sun lose her enthusiasm for the job, just when she finally found something to make her heart race. I think I like her voiceovers.
  3. The guy in Tae Il's photo is probably his brother. And something's happened to him, which is why Tae Il hesitated in admitting it.

We're getting closer to that point I'm waiting for: where Pan Suk knows the truth about Dae Goo, where Dae Goo knows the truth about Pan Suk and where they work together to take down the bad guys.
