You're All Surrounded Episode 10 Recap

The episode begins with Soo Sun beaming, waiting for the bus. She remembers Dae Goo telling her that his “friend” Ji Yong gave her this message: “You're right. There's a reason why I have to hide it. So please don't try to inquire any further, at least for a while.” Once on the bus, she starts to text Dae Goo with another question for Ji Yong, but then hesitates because he might yell at her for asking too many questions. I don’t think so. After all, you made him cry. Which made *me* cry, thinking about how alone he’s been all these years… Soo Sun thinks back to when she was younger…

Younger Soo Sun is walking, rocking some pink headphones. She’s probably singing something by Lee Hyori again. Her friends come running up, yelling her name. She doesn’t hear them until they grab her. Those are some good head phones. They tell her that someone died in her neighborhood. She’s horrified when she finds out that it was Ji Yong’s Oma that died and that Ji Yong disappeared the night before. Right after she saw him at the high school.

Soo Sun hurries down to the police department. She tells a policeman that she saw Ji Yong the night before. But Pan Suk isn’t there, so the policeman takes her statement. She tells Policeman that she saw him at the high school and it seemed like he was being chased. He went into the science lab, but wasn’t there when she went there a short time later. She mentions seeing a man with a scar on his neck coming from the science lab, though.

Wait… what’s Chief doing there? She’s walking down the hall, dressed like a detective, although she has the same hair style, and something about the mention of a scar catches her attention. She thinks. The detective asks if Soo Sun Ji Yong’s friend. Why does Chief look concerned? What is she doing there? Did she work with Pan Suk before? Soo Sun says that they were just acquaintances. Policeman asks if there was anything else about the man with the scar. Soo Sun describes him as all in black and wearing a hat. And Chief looks really interested. Why does she look so interested? I’m getting a bad feeling… She writes down her name and school and the Policeman sends her on her way.

Chief enters and asks if Soo Sun was someone who saw Ji Yong. Policeman answers in the affirmative, and adds that he can’t get a hold of Pan Suk. Chief suggests it’s because Pan Suk’s very busy, so she’ll take the statement and pass it along. Policeman hands it over. Not a lot on that piece of paper. After looking at the paper, Chief crumples it up. Arg! I have a really bad feeling now! Why would she crumple it up if she isn’t dirty? Not another Moon Shik!

Soo Sun is walking home from the police station and stumbles over her loose shoe laces. She stops to tie her shows and thinks of when Ji Yong defended Oma and tied her shoe while it rained. She shakes her head, annoyed at herself, and mutters that she’ll have to get Velcro now…

Back to the present. Soo Sun is on the bus, wondering who was Ji Yong, really?

[Episode 10: The Thing That Happened That Night!]

Pan Suk and Eung Do are out chugging Soju. Soju! Eung Do can’t believe that Dae Goo is Ji Yong. He’s surprised that Dae Goo denied being Ji Yong. Pan Suk sighs and slightly smiles as he says that Dae Goo doesn't just hate him, he abhors him… And rightly so. Eung Do says that it will get better with time, especially when Dae Goo finds out what happened to Pan Suk, what Pan Suk went through to go get him that day. What he went through? Pan Suk tells Eung Do not to say anything to Sa Kyung until she finds it out naturally. If she finds out that Dae Gu is Ji Yong... Oh, I have a bad feeling that the murder and the death of his son happened on the same night… Eung Do asks if Pan Suk will be okay. Pan Suk says he will be, but the catch in his voice as he says that it's been 11 years already doesn’t sound so convincing. He pours himself another drink.

Pan Suk walks home after meeting Eung Do and thinks back to 11 years ago, the night of the incident. Pan Suk hurries in and tells another detective (Mi Sik) that he has to go get his kid since Sa Kyung is stuck in a training class. While driving to get the son, Pan Suk gets a call from Ji Yong. Ji Yong tells Pan Suk about the pendant. Pan Suk asks where Ji Yong is so Pan Suk can come pick him up. He hears the noise in the background and realizes that it’s the school. He tells Ji Yong to stay there and he’ll be there in 30 minutes. Pan Suk hangs up with Ji Yong and calls the station. He tells the detective, his sunbae, about the pendant in the pocket. Sunbae announces that it’s there. Pan Suk tells Sunbae that he’ll be back after picking up Ji Yong and dropping off his son at home.

After getting off the phone with Sunbae, Pan Suk calls the school and tells them that he’ll be about an hour late. He turns on his siren and hurries to the school. When he arrives at the school, no Ji Yong, although Pan Suk looks in lots of different places including the bathroom and the gym. Pan Suk gets a call from the school. And it’s the call I’ve been dreading. Pan Suk runs from the school right as Boots leaves.

The horrible sight of Sa Kyung crying and weeping over Joon Woo. Pan Suk sinks to the floor, tears and snot streaming down his face.

Sa Kyung sits, desolate. Pan Suk enters and opens the curtains. She throws something at the wall, which shatters. Pan Suk doesn’t say anything.

Pan Suk has fixed dinner. Sa Kyung approaches, pulling a suitcase, plops divorce papers on the table without a word and leaves. Pan Suk is too stunned to do anything but watch her go.

The sad video of Joon Woo and the robot toy. Pan Suk laying on the couch laughing sadly over it. Falling asleep as his son says that his daddy is the bravest person in the world and that he catches the bad guys!

Morning. Dae Goo enters and looks in the fridge. Then he looks at Gook, who looks at him innocently. Gook’s drinking his banana milk. Gook replies that there’s regular milk in there. Tae Il reminds Gook that Dae Goo doesn’t drink regular milk because he thinks that it tastes weird. Gook thinks that’s stupid, since regular milk tastes great! Then why are you drinking his banana milk, if you like regular milk so much? And the Santa-like laugh that he laughs annoys *me.* Dae Goo just stares at Gook with an annoyed look on his face. The stare that could wither plant life. Gook offers the banana milk, since it’s half full. Because that’s better. Dae Goo doesn’t want the milk. I wouldn’t either.

Dae Goo, annoyed, pulls out both the chairs on his side of the table and sits, to be served one of Tae Il’s omelets. I laugh at how sour he is so much of the time. Gook tries to lighten Dae Goo’s mood by cheering over the omelet, but it doesn’t work. Tae Il asks if Soo Sun was there the night before. Dae Goo doesn’t look up and barely answers in the affirmative. Then he proceeds to pick out the carrots out of his omelet. Tae Il doesn’t look too upset when he comments on Dae Goo not liking carrots in his omelets either. Tae Il pulls out Soo Sun’s badge and gives it to Dae Goo; he found it on the floor. Gook grabs the badge and worries over Soo Sun losing the badge, because it’s a punishable offense! Then he asks why Soo Sun was here. Dae Goo doesn’t answer but takes a bite of omelet. Then he swears and asks Tae Il if he put onions in the omelet. Tae Il calls him a vegetable hater and tells Dae Goo just not to eat it. As Dae Goo grabs some toast, Tae Il sneaks a fond smile at his sour roomie.

The trio are standing together outside, waiting to cross the street, when Soo Sun arrives. She and Gook bounce as they great each other, with Soo Sun putting her arms around Gook and Tae Il’s shoulders. She greets Gook and Tae Il first. Dae Goo awkwardly looks in her direction. She smiles and greets her par-teh-ner. He doesn’t say anything and looks straight ahead. It’s totally his defense mechanism. She smiles in spite of him and then asks about Gook’s leg. With Gook and Tae Il distracted by the question, Dae Goo sneaks more looks at Soo Sun. Gook gives Soo Sun the badge, which she didn’t even realize she’d lost. She asks Tae Il if he’s really a doctor; he answers that he quit after his first year of residency. When she asks why he quit, he says it wasn’t fun. Which isn’t really the reason at all. Gook makes a face and tells Soo Sun that Tae Il sucks. Heh. She replies not as much as Dae Goo. The three laugh and Soo Sun’s face shows it’s her own inside joke. The light changes and we’re treated to another Abbey Road moment that’s a flashback to when we first met them.

Pan Suk’s at a café with Chief. She asks why he wanted to see her so early. He asks her if she knew Dae Goo was Ji Yong. Chief has her game face on. She admits that she knew Dae Goo’s secret. Pan Suk’s nice but he’s angry as he asks why Chief didn’t say anything. No answer. He asks if she deliberately put Ji Yong under his command. She says that she did. He demands to know why she did it. She answers, her voice hard, that she’s sponsored that kid since he was in the orphanage. Ji Yong wants to be a cop, so she figure that he should be under Pan Suk, so he can figure out what Pan Suk is really like and his anger would eventually subside. Pan Suk asks her how she ended up being his sponsor; was it on purpose? Chief says that it was a random coincidence. Pan Suk asks Chief if she really wants him to believe all that and she replies that regardless of whether he believes it or not, it's the truth. Pan Suk’s not convinced as Chief calmly sips her coffee.

Pan Suk leaves the café. He does not look convinced. Inside, Chief drinks her coffee. Flashback to Sunbae finding the pendant. She’s there to see it. Sunbae puts it in a separate evidence bag and then puts the box back in the cabinet. Once Sunbae is gone, Chief grabs a cell phone (also in an evidence bag) puts it on a shelf in the cabinet. She gets in the evidence box and pulls out the pendant. I am so mad. She checks to make sure no one is looking. Then she does a smooth handoff to Boots. And I am so mad. Why? Why did she have to be dirty? Unless… she’s working her own investigation and is working under cover to take Moon Bae down… Please let that be the case. Back in the present Chief puts down her coffee and, jaw set, grabs her purse and leaves.

Tae Il enters the precinct. A woman is waiting for her. Seeing her, Tae Il is not happy. Why do I think this is his Mother? She’s rich, given her clothes and tasteful but expensive jewelry. With a frown on his face, he walks up and tells her to talk outside. She sighs and complies after looking at where he’s working with a frown.

Outside the precinct, Tae Il asks why she’s there. It is his mother, who asks him if that’s anyone he should be speaking to her, especially since she hasn’t seen him in months. Tae Il frowns, chastened. She asks him why he thinks she’s there. They both know that answer. Some detectives walk by. She frowns again and starts to reprimand Tae Il for working in such a foul place and taking such a job, which doesn't make sense! Tae Il’s face is hard as he asks if she’s there to say all that. Mother tells Tae Il that Father talked to the hospital and they’re willing to treat his absence as a leave. Tae Il sighs. And I’m impressed that Tae Il is that good of a doctor that they’re willing to do that. Mother wants Tae Il to stop being so lost and come home.

Tae Il tells Mother to please leave because he has a lot of work to do. Mother can’t believe him and asks how he can do this to her. Wow, that says it all about Mother. Tae Il tells her that he’ll call and tells her to go again. She sighs and tells him to come home; they can talk then. Tae Il sighs. As all children do when their parents don’t understand and are being frustrating, but at the same time you feel bad for disappointing them. She starts to reprimand him again for not answering, threatening not to leave until he does. Sa Kyung walks by and Tae Il gives her an awkward, embarrassed look. Tae Il promises to come by on the weekend. Mother sighs and clucks about what a foul profession it is and finally leaves. Will we finally get to see how Tae Il and Sa Kyung know each other? Tae Il sighs and turns to go when Sa Kyung asks him if he hasn’t gone home first. He turns around and replies that this is the first time she’s recognized him first. She looks down awkwardly and heads into the precinct. He stares after her.

Inside, there’s an ajumma and two women, looking agitated. Sa Kyung asks if they’re there to report a missing person. Immediate, frantic reaction as one of the women begs Sa Kyung to find her brother! The other woman protests that first, they have to catch the wench who killed Hee Min! Ajumma begs Sa Kyung to find her son. He isn't someone who leaves home like that. I’m assuming that both of them are the man’s sisters. Sister2 is certain that ‘she’ killed their brother. Sa Kyung is calm as she handles the women.

A briefing on Oh Hee Min, age 33 (the missing brother). For some reason she’s briefing Pan Suk and Company. Dae Goo is not there. Which could be explained by the fact that Lee Seung Gi was hurt on the set – prop knife to the eye – so he had to spend several days in the hospital and wasn’t available to finish filming the episode. It also accounts for why this episode has been so flashback heavy – but good job by the writers for not making it all too awkward. I can see these flashbacks popping up at different times in the story rather than all in one episode. Hee Min was going to marry Choi Soo Young back on May 31st, but he has gone missing. His mother said that she couldn't reach him for over a month, but she believed whatever Choi Soo Young told her. Like the reason why he’s unreachable is because he’s traveling. What made Mother suspicious was that she started getting a bunch of internet loan statements (loans totaling 120 million Won). She and the sisters went over to Hee Min’s house. Soo Young answered and they pushed their way inside. Soo Young claims that Hee Min ran away, but they think she did something to him. All the money is gone, his assets are all liquidated and Soo Young put their apartment on the market right after Hee Min went missing. Sa Kyung says that there are so many possible scenarios, that’s why she’s asking for their help.

Pan Suk agrees that it could be a murder disguised as a missing persons case. Eung Do divvies out the responsibilities. Gook is to check what happened to the loan money, if it was transferred to an account, or it was taken out at a certain bank, whether it was done in person or not. Tae Il’s to find out more about Oh Hee Min's financial situation, like insurance policies, credit card usage, and cash withdrawals. Eung Do sends Soo Sun and Dae Goo to go meet with Choi Soo Young. Doesn’t anyone think it’s weird that Dae Goo isn’t there?

Dae Goo and Soo Sun at the apartment. Lots of pictures of the couple and Hee Min. You'd think if you were dumped by someone, you wouldn't keep all those pictures up all over. Soo Young brings them tea. Soo Sun mentions about Soo Young being so worried, but Soo Young assures them that she’s fine. Fiancée declares the money from the apartment is the least she deserves for being abandoned. Flashback of Soo Young looking at honeymoon spots and getting a call from Hee Min. He’s out celebrating with people about the engagement. She spends the night on the couch. She said that she initially was very worried – which is why she called his family and the police to report him missing – but when his phone line was cancelled a few days later, she realized that he had run away She smashes a picture of them together. Dae Goo asks Soo Young why she thinks he ran off. She says that he didn’t want to get married from the beginning, but she pressured him into setting a date and buying a place. Now he’s framing her. Dae Goo asks if this was the only reason why Hee Min might have run off. Soo Young doesn’t know what he means. Soo Sun mentions all the internet loans. Soo Young declares that he’d been gambling a lot lately and the casino had become his second home.

Gook’s out interviewing people who know Hee Min. Mechanic doesn’t even stop working for the interview. Tae Il’s interviewing another co-worker/mechanic, who declares that there’s no way Hee Min was a gambler. He never missed a day and was a very diligent person.

Pan Suk concludes from this that Soo Young is lying. Because he’s quick like that. Eung Do asks about the loans. And again Dae Goo is missing. Are they not even going to give a plausible reason why he’s not there? Instead of pretending that it’s not the least bit unordinary? Gook reports that Hee Min withdrew the money at five different branches over two days. Or at least someone claiming to be Hee Min withdrew that money. Gook mentions the insurance: Hee Min bought four new policies in the past couple months, all with Soo Young as the beneficiary.

Soo Sun wonders if all this just isn’t too obvious but Eung Do answers that it may be obvious, but it'll be difficult to prove it. They need a body to get the guilty verdict. Tae Il agrees; Hee Min’s been missing for a month, but there is no trace of him to be found anywhere and no body either. Pan Suk’s thinking. Pan Suk declares that it's too early to conclude anything so they need to focus on tracing him from the day that he went missing. Eung Do tells Soo Sun to help Sa Kyung.

The gang – including Dae Goo – are out eating dessert. Soo Sun wonders about love. Gook asks if she likes someone. His face is dorkily hopeful that it’s him. Soo Sun is still clueless. Soo Sun answers that they were together for 6 years. If it's a murder, then the girl betrayed him. If he’s just missing, then the guy betrayed her. It reminds Gook of that saying: How does love change? He’s impressed that he thought of that one. Dae Goo stares at his dessert and declares that it’s not the love that changes; it's the people who change. They all marvel at how deep he just was. He looks up at them a little awkward.

Gook asks if Dae Goo has a girlfriend, adding that even though Dae Goo’s an asshole, he's still a good looking guy. Dae Goo’s still looking at his dessert. He says that he doesn’t like girls. Gook jokingly asks if Dae Goo likes guys instead. This gets a loud laugh out of Soo Sun. Dae Goo testily looks at Gook and says that Gook doesn't understand what a metaphor is, does he. Immediate downer, with Gook feeling stupid. Soo Sun pats Gook on the back and tells him that he’ll get used to Dae Goo’s sourness. They decide to hunt on the internet for the definition of metaphor. Heh. Tae Il laughs to himself and Dae Goo sneaks a glance over at Soo Sun.

Toad is cleaning a plant in his office when he gets a phone call. The person on the other end has found the car vandal. Down in the CCTV room, the tech shows him the footage. And I roll as the footage shows A CAT jumping on his car and smashing the windshield. I had to rewind that to watch it again. Tech sputters that because Toad parks so close to the building, it makes the perfect stepping stone for stray cats. Toad doesn’t want to believe that it’s a stray. Tech assures him that it’s a stray. Toad wants a different angle and spouts that someone could have *thrown* the cat at his windshield.

Over by the coffee machine, Toad now stares at his invoice for his car repairs: 1,045,000 Won. Dang. Get a less expensive car. Eung Do happens by and offers to look at the CCTV footage, making some paw motions with his hands. Toad says that he wants to just take it like a man rather than doubting his subordinates. Toad gets up and walks back to his office, with Eung Do making cat motions and hissing after him. So the whole station knows then. Heh. Eung Do laughs as he gets his coffee.

Soo Sun is out with Sa Kyung and two other detectives. One guy is complaining about the work. Soo Sun mentions to Sa Kyung how the guys are barely pretending to be searching. Sa Kyung replies that there’s no reason why the world should cooperate with her, she has to compel them to do it. They’re at the location where Hee Min’s cell was last detected. They set about searching. Sa Kyung has no problem putting on wet boots and hunting through the muck. Which is why I like her. She’s glamorous but not too vain to get dirty. The other guys get to work after seeing her do that and Sa Kyung finally finds the cell phone.

Gook and Tae Il are at the bar where Hee Min was last seen to review the CCTV footage. Luckily, they have footage from a month ago, where Hee Min is leaving without his friends. They all look drunk. Leaving the building, they spot some surveillance cameras. They head back to work where they all start reviewing the footage. They mark off areas when the footage doesn’t pan out. Long, tiring work. Gook’s eyes look like they’re going to pop out of his head. It seems like they’re almost done when Eung Do brings them some more flash drives. He reminds them that you solve violent crimes through grunt work! Dae Goo pops in another flash drive and there’s footage of Hee Min carrying a duffel. It looks to be something like a station. The footage is from May 3rd at 8:23 am. Gook is ecstatic and they mark it on the map.

Soo Sun’s reviewing the footage with Tae Il. She can’t believe it. Tae Il mentions that the footage wasn’t tampered with… Gook’s checked for something and it’s not there. Eung Do and Pan Suk enter. Soo Sun shows them the footage of Hee Min entering a public bathroom the day after the party. Only problem? He never *left* the bathroom. Tae Il says that they looked at four hours worth of footage, but nothing of him leaving. After that, the footage was damaged, so they couldn't check. What damaged the footage? Eung Do asks if they checked the restroom; Dae Goo and Gook did and there’s no other exit. Soo Sun notices an awkward looking girl and realizes that it’s Hee Min dressed as a woman. Sa Kyung enters with a photo she pulled from Hee Min’s phone: his dressed as a woman.

Morning. Soo Sun wakes and hurries downstairs to do some jogging. She collides with some people and breaks her phone. Soo Sun showering and the water turns off, which is bad because she was right in the middle of rinsing out the soap. Voice over where she declares that there are days like this, when everything feels just off and it feels like something bad might happen. Like Lee Seung Gi having to go to the hospital because he was accidentally hit in the eye with a prop knife.

Moon Bae arrives at the station, to be greeted by Chief and Toad. Chief asks why he came all that way. Moon Bae doesn’t answer. Her face looks worried. And now, I wonder if she’s worried about Moon Bae finding Dae Goo. Why else would she be worried? They head to Chief’s office. Moon Bae tells Toad to leave. Once they’re alone, he tells Chief that Hyung Cheol has returned. So Boots’s name is Hyung Cheol… Did she know that? And why is his last name 'older brother'? She sounds shocked as she says that she had no idea. Moon Bae mentions the funny thing that Boots told him: that the boy from 11 years ago is alive. Chief swallows. And I think she’s scared for Dae Goo because she really cares about him. Moon Bae wonders what Chief thinks; is Boots speaking the truth? She doesn’t know, since this is the first time she’s heard something like this.

Moon Bae declares that the boy can't be alive and he’s sure that she knows what he means. It's quite unfortunate, but this is the sacrifice they have to make. He reminds her that Oma was killed in a retaliatory manner for testifying, so that also must be the case from now on. So she wasn't killed because of what she witnessed? Something else? Dae Goo's missing father? Chief looks like she wants to throw up. She agrees on that course of action, but it’s almost a whisper. Moon Bae is glad to hear that she’s still with him on this. Her face is inscrutable.

Moon Bae and Chief leave her office. Toad approaches. They pass through the precinct so all the detectives stand and bow. Toad’s voiceover explains that Moon Bae used to be the national chief of police, who improved the force more than anyone! Dae Goo enters the precinct, looking down at some papers he’s carrying. Chief visibly intakes air, seeing him. She’s watching Moon Bae. Dae Goo walks right past them, briefly bowing the Chief. Moon Bae turns around to look at him. Chief looks worried. He looks at Chief and says that the young detectives these days are very good looking. She agrees. Toad apologizes for Dae Goo’s rudeness. Chief visibly sighs in relief when Moon Bae goes. I definitely think she's protecting Dae Goo.

In his car, Moon Bae calls Boots and tells him to carry 'it' out as ordered. Boots must be perfect. Boots responds that he understands and he won't disappoint Moon Bae again.

Chief is sitting at her desk, stewing over the conversation with Moon Bae. She makes a phone call to Dae Goo. She says she's calling because she remembered that Boots looked at his records from the orphanage. This is probably nothing... but he should take care of himself. She even throws in 'please.' Why would she call with a warning if she didn't care? She tells him to make sure that he’s never alone and always to stay with his team. He needs to call her if anything happens. Dae Goo says that he understands.

Dae Goo gets off the phone and turns around to find Soo Sun standing right there. He’s startled, which startles her. She says that she wanted to tell him today's horoscope. He tells her to go away and goes back to his desk. When she tries to scoot her chair next to him, he uses the ruler to tell her to maintain a safe distance. Gook notices their interchange. Soo Sun scoffs that she wasn’t going to get any closer. Dae Goo tells her he’s not interested in the horoscope. She answers that they can be very accurate. He asks her if she knows what he considers to be the stupidest question in the world… The blood type question. How can someone possibly think it'd be accurate to categorize all of the 6 billion people on the earth into four simple blood-type types? Gook tries to scrunch down in his chair out of sight. I think I remember him mentioning it previously; he doesn't want Dae Goo's scorn because he believes in it. Dae Goo points out that if they assume that Korea has 48 million people, dividing that into 12 zodiac signs means that around 4 million people share the same sign. And since it is divided into five years, about 800,000 people share the same daily prediction. So, everyone who was born in 1970 is a dog, which means all of them share the same prediction forever. Ridiculous.

Soo Sun nods as if she's buying it and then tells him to just hear her out. “It's barren around you and you're isolated from everyone. You may scream, but no one is there to save you.” Dae Goo’s face says that this resonates a little too much for him. “Something harmful might appear out of nowhere, so you must be prepare in advance.” Soo Sun concludes that this is quite a bad omen and asks, as his partner, how she could not be concerned. He needs to take care of himself. Dae Goo looks over at her, mildly annoyed. She lowers her voice and says that her hunches are pretty accurate! He nods an okay and then shoves her back over to her desk with his foot, getting a complaint out of Soo Sun. She rolls back over to be met with the ruler. As he starts to tell her to maintain her distance, she cuts him off at maintain and says that she will. Gook cocks his head a little watching them.

Boots is in his hotel room, polishing his big knife with a smile. Why do they always use these huge bowie knives? Smaller ones work just as well and are a lot easier to carry. He wraps the knife in a cloth and sticks it in his pants. Really? No sheath for the knife? How professional is that? I guess it’s payback time. Boots gets in his car and calls someone, asking to meet right now. It’s with Pan Suk.

The pair are in some empty shell of a warehouse. Boots asks if Pan Suk remembers it. He does. Pan Suk tells Boots to ask for his favor. Boots chuckles and tells Pan Suk that he’s still short-tempered. Boots wants Pan Suk to find him a way to smuggle himself out to China, which surprises Pan Suk. In this light, they actually look like they could be brothers, which would explain their connection. Boots says that he needs it as soon as possible… If things go well as planned, he might leave as early as this week. Pan Suk asks why Boots needs to be smuggled out. What’s he planning on doing? Boots replies that if Pan Suk knows what he’s doing, he’ll find himself in a sticky situation and Pan Suk’s character isn't one that lies easily.

Pan Suk says Boot’s name (Hyung Cheol). Boots tells Pan Suk that he doesn’t have to look at him like that. He’s (Boots) still proud of the scar under his ear. The mention of the scar bothers Pan Suk. Boots tells him to get a boat as soon as possible. He adds that once his job succeeds and he leaves for China, Pan Suk will never see him again. Boots walks away. Pan Suk looks really bothered.

12 Years Ago. Pan Suk and Boots arrive in a car. They’re working together and Boots is wearing non-black clothes and glasses and no cap. They non-verbally communicate and sneak into the building. Pan Suk picks up a pipe. A guy sneaks up behind them. Boots sees and gets in between Pan Suk and the flaming stick the attacker is wielding – which explains the scar. Boots shoots the guy as he tries to attach them but he’s badly burned. Pan Suk freaks out. Newspaper articles explain that Boots – a cop – was dismissed for gun abuse, because he killed a fugitive. An angry, badly burned Hyung Cheol is carrying his box of stuff. Pan Suk catches up with him and takes the box. Boots doesn’t say anything, just walks away. So that explains their relationship. Pan Suk probably has no idea that Boots was involved in Ji Yong’s stuff.

Pan Suk goes back home and the lights in his kitchen are flickering. He climbs up to change the lights and notices the camera. He pulls it down and angrily leaves his apartment. He goes to the station. The tech tells Pan Suk that because the camera was using VPN to transmit, it’s going to be extremely hard to find where the images were sent to. Even the Cyber Investigation Team gives up if VPN is involved. Tech asks him if he has an idea who was doing it. Pan Suk doesn’t answer. We know that he does.

Boots stares up at Dae Goo’s building. Inside, Dae Goo is reading a book. Tae Il and Gook asks him if there’s anything he wants from the market. Banana milk. They invite him to come along. He doesn’t want to come. Gook’s a little put out and tells Dae Goo that they might stop for chicken and beer on the way back. He hopes Dae Goo doesn’t regret it. Leaving the building, Tae Il remarks how quickly time has passed; their refrigerator has been empty for days. Gook agrees. Then he asks Tae Il if Dae Goo and Soo Sun are getting close. So he *did* notice. Tae Il thinks it’s only natural since the pair are partners. This puts Gook’s mind at ease. Dae Goo and Soo Sun are partners like they are partners. They decide to go for chicken and beer and call Soo Sun – with Gook calling her, of course. Boots watches them leave.

Boots sneaks into their apartment. How does he do that? He's not a ninja. It’s dark. He checks the bathroom, Tae Il and Gook’s room. Nothing. He pulls the knife and slowly opens Dae Goo’s door. Dae Goo is behind the door with a baseball bat. And this has to be when Lee Seung Gi got hurt because the fight is intense. Dae Goo is smashing things all over the place trying to get Boots. Pan Suk is walking with determination, presumably coming to see Dae Goo. And the episode ends. Without showing the end of the fight. Which makes sense, since Seung Gi got hurt. I bet they filmed that later. Dae Goo’s probably going to get hurt, too, since his character’s ending up at the hospital (found out that spoiler when I was trying to find out an update on Seung Gi’s condition. Someone snapped a pic of him in hospital clothes heading to the hospital, but it was from a scene they were shooting, rather than the actor still being in the hospital).

Thoughts

This episode revealed a lot of info that we were wondering about, and I do have to admit, the writers were less skilled than usual in their storytelling this week, which makes sense given the scramble to salvage footage and the storylines because of Lee Seung Gi’s injury. It does bother me that they acted like it was totally normal that Dae Goo wasn't in the scenes with the briefings and such. Any other time and Pan Suk would have said something about that punk not being there. They could have at least come up with some plausible excuse.

One thing that I like is that it’s *still* not obvious whether Chief is a bad guy or not. At least whether she was one back then or not. It looks more like she was, but now she’s not. It may be because she grew to love Ji Yong and wants to protect him from the corrupt Moon Bae. I’m hoping that it’s really because she was working undercover, although why wouldn’t it have come out back then? But I don’t think she’s bad now. Maybe just working to get the corrupt Moon Bae put away but also hoping to cover her involvement in everything, because she doesn’t want to go to jail or hurt Dae Goo. I really believe this because of how she was acting when Moon Bae visited. She didn’t reveal that Dae Goo was Ji Yong. She would if she wasn't covering for Dae Goo. I also think this because she called to warn Dae Goo to be on his guard after that conversation with Moon Bae. She didn’t have to warn him, if she was just using him and didn’t care. I also wonder if there's more to the story, because there are still 10 episodes to go. It seems was early to be revealing that she's dirty if she was really dirty.

And it seems like Boots didn’t tell him, either, because Moon Bae probably would have tried to meet the lad if he had a name.

That flashback answered how Boots got the pendant and definitely confirms that Pan Suk is not dirty. Especially when you couple it with the flashback explaining how Pan Suk and Boots know each other. It also gives a possible explanation of how Boots ended up on Moon Bae’s payroll, since he was injustly fired a year before Oma’s murder. Moon Bae probably sought him out, to use him for the dirty work. He could twist that anger to turn Boots into a killer for hire. Moon Bae shows that he’s just as much of a scumbag as ever when he callously declares that some loses are necessary. But what did he mean by inferring that the reason for her death was a cover story for something else? What could it be?

The flashback to that night also shows that the accident that killed Joon Hee, Pan Suk's son, happened on the night that Oma was murdered and happened because Pan Suk was looking for Ji Yong. I fear the fallout from Sa Kyung finding out (1) that Dae Goo is Ji Yong (and indirectly responsible for her son’s death), and (2) that Pan Suk knew and didn’t tell her. Wow, so much of their lives were impacted by that night.

For some reason, Dae Goo doesn’t like regular milk. I like the fact that everyone is being more accepting of his prickliness now that they know he has a real tragic reason for it. Except Gook shouldn’t have drunk his banana milk. I love that Soo Sun is way less sensitive to Dae Goo’s prickliness now. His rant on horoscopes – she just let him finish and then said her piece. It's like she knows he has to be like this in order to not appear to be Ji Yong, so she lets him do his act and then gets on with things. Love it. I wonder how long before they realize that they like each other – I hope not too long, because even Gook’s starting to notice, and he’s not the quickest.

My suspicions about Tae Il are correct: he is a rich, rich boy. I still wonder if the dead guy is his brother. Otherwise, why would his mother have such disdain for the police? The episode didn’t answer how Tae Il and Sa Kyung know each other, but they do show that Sa Kyung remembers Tae Il – although I suspect she didn’t remember him until seeing him with his mother. The episode also explains who trashed Toad’s car: a stray cat. Hehehe.

Our case of the day is a missing man and it’s still not clear if he ran off or was murdered by his fiancée. I suspect the second, but his plan was to run off with her and she just got greedy.

Pan Suk found the camera in his apartment. Does Dae Goo know that Pan Suk found it? Glad that the episode explains Pan Suk and Boots’s connection. I don’t think Pan Suk knows what Boots became, otherwise I think Pan Suk would have arrested him, but I think Pan Suk feels bad because he feels responsible for Boots getting hurt and getting fired. Pan Suk seems to feel responsible for a lot of things that happen to other people.
Can’t wait to see this week’s episodes to see the fall out of the fight between Dae Goo and Boots. I think this just might be where Dae Goo finds out about Pan Suk’s connection to Boots, but I wonder if maybe Pan Suk will protect Boots from Dae Goo and then Dae Goo will still think Pan Suk is dirty. But maybe not. Maybe it will all come out and they can start working together… I know. Wishful thinking….
