Good Doctor Episode 2 Recap

Good-Doctor_02-003  Good-Doctor_02-006

The episode starts with where we left off: Yoon Seo waking up and screaming, with Shi Ohn brushing his teeth, staring at her in his boxer shorts. At least they’re not tighty-whiteys. It still cracks me up how she gags herself while she’s screaming so she has to cough. Heh. Shi Ohn doesn’t say anything as she asks him who he is and what he’s done to her. She throws things like bed pillows at him, all the while clutching the blankets to cover herself.

She grabs the TV remote to defend herself, even though Shi Ohn basically hasn’t moved except to avoid the pillow and to brush his teeth. Yoon Seo accidentally switches on the TV, which just happens to be covering a news story of Mr. Park who got women drunk, pretended to be their boyfriend and then took them home and raped them. How convenient.

Yoon Seo threatens to call the police. Shi Ohn tells her that this is his house. She argues that it’s *her* house. She falls out of bed, looking for her phone, and slaps Shi Ohn away as he tries to help her. Then she realizes that this is *not* her apartment. She asks the unit number and it’s not her house. Shi Ohn is still looking at her. She is basically just in the slip, so she tells him to turn his head. In a great funny moment, Shi Ohn rotates his head in a circle. He did what she told to. Hee. She makes him turn his body around and yells at him not to look. As he’s still brushing his teeth – I guess he really likes them clean – he says ‘okay,’ although she probably wasn’t paying attention.

Shi Ohn has left his apartment. Yoon Seo follows after him and stops him. She apologizes. Apparently, his new apartment was her old apartment until last week. Now she lives in the flat above him. She says he understands what happened, right? To which Shi Ohn answers, “Nope,” and starts walking again. She hurries and begins to walk with him.

Since it’s company housing, Yoon Seo asks what department Shi Ohn works in. When she finds out it’s Pediatrics, she realizes he’s the new resident. She introduces herself; she’s a second year fellow. She asks him about not using honorifics, since he’s her junior (hoobae), but they’ve reached the corner. Instead of answering her, he speaks out his directions: turn right at the convenience store. And on he walks, leaving her standing there staring at him, confused.

Good-Doctor_02-011  Good-Doctor_02-016  Good-Doctor_02-020

Yoon Seo doesn’t stay there very long, but rushes to catch up with him. He’s not a slow walker, that’s for sure. Shi Ohn continues to quote his directions. Yoon Seo asks him if he’s ignoring her, but instead of answering, he quotes the next step: taking bus #202. She complains about him turning on her, for just a few mistakes. This makes him stop and look at her. I find it interesting that he stopped. Another instance of Shi Ohn caring about the people around him. Yoon Seo tells him to talk to her. Instead, he starts with his instructions again and walks away. I guess he figured that stopping would show her that he’s not ignoring her. You can tell from her face that she finds him very odd. And we know that there are 8 bus stops from the company housing to the hospital.

Now they’re in the residents’ break room. Yoon Seo is talking with Jin Wook, who’s explaining about Shi Ohn’s condition. The rest of the residents look unconscious in their various parts of the room. Shi Ohn is looking in the mirror, finishing straightening his lab coat. Jin Wook’s surprised that Shi Ohn has company housing, since you have to be a fellow to get a flat there. Yoon Seo mentions Shi Ohn’s “good connections.” Jin Wook says that it’s strange, because Woo Suk doesn’t normally get involved in personnel matters.

Do Han enters and sighs when he sees Shi Ohn. Yoon Seo jumps up from her seat and helps to rouse the other residents, slapping Kil Nam on the leg to get him up. Shi Ohn turns toward Do Han and bows. Do Han sighs in irritation and goes and grabs a bottle. He tosses it at Yoon Seo, who is able to catch it. She wants to know why he’s throwing men’s toner at her. He tells her that her breath still reeks of alcohol, so she needs to use it before they go on rounds. She doesn’t want to use it, but will use perfume instead, but Do Han tells her she doesn’t have any and walks away as the other residents laugh. She glares at them. Shi Ohn points to the bottle and tells Yoon Seo that the public path in his town uses this brand, so she’ll smell like an old man when she uses it. This makes the other residents stifle their laughter again and Yoon Seo sigh.

Do Han sure can walk fast. Shi Ohn is practically jogging to keep pace with the group as they start their rounds. The kids are asking Jung Mi how to avoid bullying at their school. He asks the kids who the “tong” of their class is. The kids don’t know what he means, so they start listing words that end in tong, like mailbox, lunch box… He stops them and asks who’s the best fighter at their school. One of the boys says “Tyranno” Bae Tae Kwang. What a nickname: T-Rex. He tells them to go and call this T-Rex out to fight, goading him into coming, and then to throw sand in his eyes. He’s about to go on, when he’s interrupted by Joo Yun, who tells him to stop teaching the kids bad things and to get back to work. The haste with which Jung Mi jumps and obeys makes the kids call him a liar.

At the nurses’ station, two of them are gossiping about Shi Ohn and how someone with his condition got a job as a resident. One of them wonders if, because Shi Ohn has political pull (Woo Suk), that Do Han will go easy on him, since he seems to flatten even the most confident of residents.

Good-Doctor_02-036  Good-Doctor_02-035  Good-Doctor_02-037

Do Han and the group arrive. The gossiping nurses notice Shi Ohn. Jin Wook introduces Shi Ohn. Shi Ohn bows and begins to recite his address when Il Kyu mutters to him to stop because it’s embarrassing. Joo Yun is nice enough to treat Shi Ohn like he’s normal; she greets him and introduces herself. Jung Mi also introduces himself and enthusiastically greets Shi Ohn, telling him he’s looking forward to working with him, basically in the same volume that Shi Ohn was using. I like him.

Do Han is looking over the patient list and orders that Eun Ji – the little girl from the first episode who was afraid to die during surgery – be prepped for surgery. Yoon Seo clearly wants to say something, but holds back. But Joo Yun respectfully says that she thinks Eun Ji should see a shrink before her surgery. Do Han basically ignores her. Because he knows best! Yoon Seo and Joo Yun share a look with Joo Yun shaking her head and Yoon Seo sighing heavily. The group moves on.

They’re at the bedside of a young boy. I can’t tell if it’s Hyun Woo. Do Han’s announcing that the boy is progressing favorably. No, it’s not Hyun Woo’s mother, just another little boy in need of surgery to help his liver. Jin Wook notices that Shi Ohn isn’t writing down anything. He asks him about it. Pausing for a moment, Shi Ohn answers that he is, in his head. He even points. Yoon Seo’s a little shocked so she tells him to list the orders given for today. As Shi Ohn rattles off the orders, Il Kyu and Kil Nam scramble to check their own notes. Yoon Seo starts to scold him, but Do Han tells her to leave it. He has a little smile on his face as he moves on in their rounds.

Good-Doctor_02-038  Good-Doctor_02-039  Good-Doctor_02-040

Shi Ohn pauses to bow to the mother and as he’s about to leave, he notices all the butterflies taped above a little boy’s bed. Yoo Syung Ho. Syung Ho is sleeping, but his mother is cleaning his face with a wet wipe. Shi Ohn stops to talk to the mother, asking if Syung Ho drew them. Apparently, Syung Ho wants to be an entomologist. Shi Ohn compliments the boys work. The mother smiles at the praise and continues to clean her son with the wet wipes. His hand falls limply to his side.

Suddenly Syung Ho sits up and vomits up bile, with his mother freaking out. Shi Ohn quickly walks out the nurses’ station and asks what the boy is diagnosed with. Jung Mi happily answers that Syung Ho was operated on 3 days ago for a biliary cyst (a cyst on the bile-producing organs, probably his gall bladder). Shi Ohn asks to see the chart.

Shi Ohn returns to the room with Jung Mi on his heels and asks how long it’s been since Syung Ho has been limp. His mother says that it started yesterday morning and he’s been complaining of a stomach ache since then. I think this is the little boy that Choong Man blew off because he was ready to leave work. As he starts to examine Syung Ho, Shi Ohn asks when Syung Ho started throwing up and if he’s been urinating well. The vomiting started early that morning and he hasn’t urinated since yesterday. Jung Mi starts to look a little uncomfortable.

Good-Doctor_02-043  Good-Doctor_02-044  Good-Doctor_02-045

Shi Ohn listens to his stomach area and then pushes on Syung Ho’s belly. Syung Ho weakly complains that it hurts. Here comes more medical jargon! Shi Ohn’s thinking and it’s something yucky and green. Syung Ho’s mother starts hysterically crying, drawing the attention of Do Han and the other residents. I guess Syung Ho has passed out because Shi Ohn’s looking at his pupil reflexes with the mother begging him to say something. When Do Han asks, Shi Ohn declares that Syung Ho needs surgery again as soon as possible. Yoon Seo asks what the situation is, but Do Han sushes her and asks Jung Mi if this is Choong Man’s patient. I feel politics coming. When he hears a yes, Do Han drops his head, frustrated, because he knows what that means. Apparently, Choong Man isn’t that good at his job but has the political clout to stay chief. I bet this isn’t the first time this has happened, judging from Do Han’s reaction.

Do Han tells Shi Ohn to leave the room. Then he tells Syung Ho’s mother to wait a bit and her son will be fine. Do Han and the other residents leave. It’s obvious that neither Yoon Seo or Shi Ohn wants to go. Joo Yun tries to calm the mother, but Choong Man gave her that line yesterday!

Good-Doctor_02-049  Good-Doctor_02-052  Good-Doctor_02-057

Outside Shi Ohn is adamantly saying that Syung Ho is in danger! Danger! Yoon Seo asks what’s so dire. Shi Ohn says that surgery was 3 days ago but his stomach is hurting, he has a fever and he’s vomiting bile. Do Han answers that Syung Ho might just have an ileus (obstruction of the bowel). Shi Ohn adds that there’s more: Syung Ho is dehydrated and hasn’t urinated since yesterday. Also, the boy has rebound tenderness (pain felt when pressure is removed from the abdomen). Yoon Seo says that it’s natural to be lethargic after surgery. Not that lethargic. And that there should be some pain after surgery. Shi Ohn disagrees; if surgery had gone well, he would have more energy. Because children are resilient, they recover quickly when the doctor does a good job.

After considering for a moment, and you know Do Han’s been won over by Shi Ohn’s thoroughness, he asks Jin Wook who assisted in the surgery. On hearing that it was some 4th-year Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) specialists, he tells them to get Choong Man on the phone now. Jung Mi pipes up that the chief has gone to a seminar today. Do Han tells Jung Mi to call him directly. Jung Mi hurries off to do just that. Then he turns to Shi Ohn and tells him that from now on, he shouldn’t say or do ANYTHING. Shi Ohn clamps his mouth shut. Aw, Do Han knows what’s coming and it trying to keep Shi Ohn out of trouble. Of course, Shi Ohn doesn’t understand this, and a little explanation on Do Han’s part would go a long way, but Do Han isn’t going to do that. Why take feelings into account?

Good-Doctor_02-058  Good-Doctor_02-059  Good-Doctor_02-060

Do Han walks off, with the group following him. Il Kyu nicely snipes at Shi Ohn that he sure leaves an impression during his first day. Shi Ohn still has his mouth clamped closed and doesn’t say anything. Jung Mi’s trying to reach Choong Man and is increasingly frustrated since the man isn’t picking up. His seminar must be keeping him busy. If you mean by seminar, time out on the golf course. What a winner of a guy.

Do Han and the group are scrubbing in for Eun Ji’s surgery. Several ask about notifying the HPB department but Do Han tells them to focus on the coming surgery. Don’t you get it, guys, it’s a political storm that he’s about to tackle and he doesn’t want it to get in the way of saving *this* kid’s life. Shi Ohn is awkwardly wandering around with his hands held up. I can’t tell if he’s already scrubbed or uncomfortable with the sink that’s been left for him.

In the OR, Do Han comments that Hepatic portal vein has expanded a lot more than from what they’ve seen in the previous CT and the bypass blood vessel has gotten worse. Then he sticks a jab at Yoon Seo regarding the psych eval recommendation; it would have made things a lot worse because of how things were progressing physically. Yoon Seo apologizes and then Do Han notices that Shi Ohn is missing. As the surgery commences, Yoon Seo says that she thinks Shi Ohn went back to Syung Ho, and then calls Shi Ohn a jerk. Kil Nam remarks to another resident about Shi Ohn needing to pull himself together. Do Han yells at them to focus on EUN JI!

Yeo Won is in her office, talking with Woo Suk about Chae Kyung. The death of her biological mother has hit Chae Kyung hard and instead of time healing the wound, it’s just festering. Woo Suk encourages Yeo Won to persevere, even if it is hard. Does this mean that she’s Yeo Won’s step-daughter? Woo Suk gets a phone call from Shi Ohn, who’s quickly telling him about the problem.

Good-Doctor_02-068  Good-Doctor_02-069  Good-Doctor_02-070

Choong Man’s having a great old time on the golf course. Apparently, he’s schmoozing a drug rep or something like that. One of the assistants comes up and tells Choong Man that he’s been getting a lot of calls. He *finally* answers the phone. Choong Man tells Jung Mi to hold on for a few more hours. When Jung Mi protests, asking to maybe pull in Do Han, Choong Man chews him out and says that it’s *his* patient and he’ll take care of it when he gets there. What a great guy. He takes his Hippocratic Oath seriously.

Shi Ohn is pacing nervously in Syung Ho’s hospital room. Jung Mi enters to say that the Chief will be there in 2 hours, but Shi Ohn protests that 2 hours will be too late. Joo Yun asks about the transfer to the HPB unit? Never. Syung Ho’s mother is near hysterical, begging them to help her son. She’s a little over-the-top in her histrionics for it to feel real to me, but not everyone can be a great actor. Aigoo. Atekay!

Good-Doctor_02-073  Good-Doctor_02-075  Good-Doctor_02-076

Shi Ohn grabs the bed and starts pulling, with Joo Yun pulling back, telling him that they don’t have clearance. She tells at Jung Mi to help her, but after hesitating a moment, he grabs the other end of the bed and they start wheeling Syung Ho to the elevators. Joo Yun can’t run very quickly, because she barely gets there, but Jung Mi pushes her out of the elevator and they leave her screaming at them. This exchange is witnessed by Hyun Tae, who asks what’s going on.

At the doors of the OR, two nurses are blocking the way, saying that Joo Yun called and they don’t have permission to enter. Jung Mi apologizes and asks for them to let him be sorry one more time. Then he shoves himself between them and shoves them out of the way. And in they go to the OR suite. Joo Yun comes up right behind them muttering that this must be a nightmare.

They’ve called Do Han’s OR to report what’s happening. Shi Ohn’s in the next operating room. Do Han asks about Choong Man and is told about the 2 hour time table. Yoon Seo comments that 2 hours will be too long. Do Han considers as they work.

Good-Doctor_02-082  Good-Doctor_02-083  Good-Doctor_02-085

In the other OR, they’re quickly prepping Syung Ho for surgery. Joo Yun is telling them that it’s not too late, that they can take Syung Ho and leave. Jung Mi notes Syung Ho’s heart rate is elevated but his blood pressure is low and he has a fever of 38.9*C (102*F). Jung Mi is freaking out and so it Shi Ohn. I feel so bad for him. His blood vessels are bulging. He’s so desperate, he decides he’ll operate, but in his haste, he drops instruments and things on the floor.

Do Han slowly enters and lowly asks Shi Ohn if he knows what he just did. Shi Ohn declares that Syung Ho’s in septic shock (a serious, life-threatening condition, when an overwhelming infection leads to low blood pressure) and peritonitis is suspected based on abdominal palpation. (Peritonitis = an infection of the peritoneum, or tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs.) Do Han yells at Shi Ohn to shut his mouth. Shi Ohn is twitching just like he did when the kids were beating him up as a kid.

Good-Doctor_02-089  Good-Doctor_02-091  Good-Doctor_02-092

Do Han sighs and then tells Jung Mi that he’ll operate on Syung Ho. He turns around to the other residents, and tells them that they will be operating on the two simultaneously. Yoon Seo and Il Kyu will stay with Eun Ji. Jin Wook, Kil Nam and Sun Joo will change their gowns and take over Syung Ho’s surgery. Do Han gives prep orders and Jung Mi says that he’ll help, since he was an OR nurse until two years ago. Do Han lets him stay. Shi Ohn sputters that he would like to participate, too, but Do Han tells him to get out. When Shi Ohn protests, Do Han gets louder. Yoon Seo is looking at Shi Ohn like he’s insane. After looking at Syung Ho, Shi Ohn reluctantly leaves.

Hyun Tae is observing from above. He does not look pleased. Shi Ohn enters the observation gallery. When Do Han feels Shi Ohn staring, he looks up and is ‘greeted’ by Hyun Tae, who’s smirking just a little. Do Han nods at Hyun Tae and then burns a hole in Shi Ohn’s forehead before proceeding with the surgeries. Woo Suk arrives, looking worried. Noticing Hyun Tae, he asks why Hyun Tae is there. Hyun Tae makes up some excuse about Do Han’s skill. After a primary inspection, Do Han leaves Eun Ji in Yoon Seo’s hands.

In with Syung Ho, Do Han observes that the CT scan shows that it’s a mesentery obstruction. Either the Roux-en-Y limb wasn't done correctly, or the mesentery was not sutured up right. Basically Choong Man screwed up royally. I didn’t have to look up any terminology to know that one. Shi Ohn starts to report on his observations through a mike but Do Han cuts him off and tells him to sit down and shut up.

Do Han starts his incision and then asks for suction. Lots of nice green infectious fluid. Apparently, because Choong Man screwed up so royally, the smaller intestine went inside the larger one, a mistake that an inexperienced surgeon might make. But not the Chief of the department. This is major medical malpractice. Also, the way Choong Man sewed him back together, his intestine would have slowly died because of lack of blood flow. For some reason, the gross body parts like the small intestine are blurred out. Maybe they think it’s too graphic for people to see. As they finish, Jin Wook remarks that if they’d delayed surgery, it would have been really bad, which gets a sour pensive look from Do Han.

Do Han starts to leave, but Shi Ohn is notices the blood pooling around the pancreas. Jin Wook says something, with Do Han coming back. Woo Suk asks if it’s a problem with the suture site and Do Han says no, so they have to work quickly to find the source of the bleeding.

Yoon Seo yells over that the tumor’s been removed, but it isn’t clear whether it’s spread elsewhere. Do Han tells her to leave that part for later and to do the other part first. Then he turns back to Syung Ho. Do Han says that both the small intestine and pancreas are looking good, but the source of the blood isn’t clear. It would have been bad if they’d ended the surgery without noticing this. Shi Ohn starts saying, “Order! Order!” which gets a glare from Do Han, but the man follows Shi Ohn’s advice. Jung Mi reports that Syung Ho was given Cepa and Heta Vizen. Do Han looks at Jung Mi and says, “What did you say?”

Even before Shi Ohn starts talking, Do Han knows that it’s bad. Heta Vizen is a variant of somatostatin (a neurohormone found in the hypothalamus that inhibits the secretion of several other hormones including insulin, gastrin and growth hormone). It’s manufactured by an American corporation: Saint Medic Corp. When injected into children, it's reported to cause cholestasis (failure of bile flow) and hemorrhaging. Currently, it is banned for use in children in the States but since last March, it's been used in clinical settings in Korea. National drug administrators warned about avoid clinical injections into children. This is from an article in the April issue of MediChild Weekly, page 16.

Everyone in OR reacts to this news. Because it’s very BAD. They get to work on cleaning up the mess. Yoon Seo reports that she’s done all she can do on Eun Ji. Do Han tells Jin Wook to finish up with the rest of Syung Ho and goes over to finish Eun Ji’s operation.

Leaving the OR, Do Han and the others are greeted by Woo Suk and a smiling Hyun Tae, who has ‘marveled’ at Do Han’s skill during the surgery. I bet he’s just really happy that they’ll be avoiding a class-action law suit. Woo Suk congratulates them on both surgeries. After a few glowing words from Hyun Tae, Woo Suk says for them to go and speak with the guardians. And that’s when Choong Man scurries in. His expression immediately changes, wondering why both the Director and Assistant Director are there. Woo Suk’s glare is priceless. He really looks like he could punch Choong Man at the moment. Woo Suk and Hyun Tae leave with Choong Man bowing after them, wishing them a good evening.

Then Choong Man turns around and points his finger at Do Han asking him whose permission he had! Do Han suddenly hauls off and punches Shi Ohn in the face, knocking him to the floor. Yoon Seo rushes over to Shi Ohn and Jin Wook is holding Do Han back from punching Shi Ohn some more. Shi Ohn starts smiling, one of those nervous tics, but Do Han thinks Shi Ohn’s laughing at him. Jung Mi comes over to help hold Do Han back. Choong Man is flabberghast as he watches the scene.

Yoon Seo tells Shi Ohn to apologize but Do Han, now that he’s ‘controlled’ himself yells that Shi Ohn can’t apologize when he doesn’t understand what he did wrong! What exactly *did* he do wrong? Do Han yells at Shi Ohn that he was lucky; both of those kids could have died because of what he did. He says that there’s something worse than an indifferent surgeon (Choong Man): a surgeon that can’t wipe his own rear. Yoon Seo says she’ll make Shi Ohn understand and Do Han tells her that he never wants to see Shi Ohn again! Yoon Seo escorts Shi Ohn away.

In frustration, Do Han kicks one of the surgical carts. Choong Man demands to know what’s going on. And here comes the righteous wrath of Do Han! Choong Man snarks that seniority must not be observed anymore. Choong Man starts to yell at him when a golf ball pops out of his jacket. Oops. Not saying anything, Do Han hands it back with a glare and leaves, followed by Jin Wook. Choong Man can only stare at the ball. Jung Mi comes over and asks if he was at a golf seminar? Where he was schmoozing the drug rep of the drug that almost killed little Syung Ho. Nice.

Yoon Seo is tending to Shi Ohn’s bloody nose. She asks him if he still doesn’t know what he did wrong. Shi Ohn isn’t making eye contact. All Shi Ohn says is “Butterflies. Beautiful butterflies.” This means nothing to Yoon Seo. I think he’s thinking about how Syung Ho will be able to grow up now and become an entomologist. So he makes me cry a little. Yoon Seo explains that the operating surgeon knows his patient best and it can be dangerous when another surgeon operates because of urgency alone. Without knowing all the variables, the second surgeon would make an even worse mistake. That’s why Do Han told him to wait for the Chief. Yoon Seo adds that focus means life for them and he caused them to lose it today.

Yoon Seo gets a phone call and has to leave. She tells Shi Ohn to stay there and wait for her, so they can walk back to the dorm together. After she leaves, Jung Mi comes in and holds out a fist. Shi Ohn thinks he’s playing kawi, baki, bo (rock, paper, scissors) so he makes the paper sign. Jung Mi explains that he wants Shi Ohn’s fist. So Shi Ohn makes one but doesn’t bump. Jung Mi smiles and bumps for him. And then he leaves, waving goodbye. Shi Ohn looks at his fist, wondering what that all meant.

Do Han’s in talking with Woo Suk, telling him about punching Shi Ohn. After apologizing to Woo Suk (not Shi Ohn), Woo Suk tells him that it’s understandable and then apologizes for giving him an unnecessary burden. Do Han looks at Woo Suk and glares and tells him not to do that. Do Han thinks they need to deal with the Heta Vizen situation before dealing with Shi Ohn. Woo Suk agrees and then shares something with Do Han so that he can understand Shi Ohn better and not misunderstand him. This impending revelation obviously burdens Do Han because he’s now on the hospital roof, thinking.
The reason Shi Ohn smiled when he was getting hit was because he still has autistic tendencies. His internal fears come out in the opposite way externally. Because he kept smiling while he was getting hit, he got hit by friends a lot when he was little. So now Do Han feels like a big old bully. Which he should. Punching the man is ridiculous.
Shi Ohn is sitting at Syung Ho’s bedside. I guess he didn’t stay where Yoon Seo told him to stay. Tenderly, he tells Syung Ho thank you. As he leaves the room, he gets stopped by Syung Ho’s mother, who tearfully thanks him, saying that she’s going to tell her son to grow up to be a great person like Shi Ohn.

Shi Ohn goes outside and sits on one of the benches. A butterfly comes and flies around near him. He stares at it with rapt wonder. Yoon Seo arrives and comes over to him, scolding him for not listening to her orders. She brought food and pesters him to eat it. He refuses. She grabs his face and start to try to force him to eat, but he’s clamped his mouth shut. Do Han comes outside and sees her trying to get him to eat. Do Han rolls his eyes.

Someone calls Do Han’s name. It’s Kim Jae Joon, the Chair of the HBP Department. Jae Joon tells Do Han that he should have stayed in the HBP department, since Shi Ohn is so much trouble. That’s why he (Jae Joon) was against accepting Shi Ohn. Do Han answers that he’s not a problem and all departments have problems. Jae Joon says that the Pediatrics Department seems to have so many problems, including Yoon Seo.

Jae Joon tells him that they have a child with a hepatoblastoma (malignant liver tumor) in their department. Yoon Seo caused a scene, saying that she was going to have the girl transferred. She’s too high in her britches, looking down on her classmates. Do Han should take care of things, after all it wasn’t *his* order, was it? Do Han agrees that it wasn’t his order and he’ll take care of it. But not the way I think you think he will… Jae Joon tells Do Han to stop being arrogant and follow the rules. As he’s about to walk off, Jae Joon tells Do Han to take care of Choong Man, because Choong Man was a classmate. He basically sneers while calling Do Han disrespectful.

Jung Mi is getting yelled at by Joo Yun. She tells him he needs to write a written apology and take a pay cut. Jung Mi will write a 100 letters, but the pay cut is too much. The other two nurses have been listening at the door when suddenly they burst in with the 4 kids on top of them. One of them holds out some sand, telling Jung Mi to throw it in Joo Yun’s eye, like he said to do. Heh.

Hyun Tae’s on the phone. He’s made some changes to the plan. With a general strategy, it won’t work. What plan is this? I have a bad feeling he’s trying to sell out the hospital. He gets off the phone when Chae Kyung arrives. It’s a mutual ‘praise’ fest, with Chae Kyung wondering why such a skilled manager was at their hospital. Another clue that something nefarious is going on. And she seems like she is trying to figure him out with all her praise.

Back at the Residents’ Break Room, everyone is there. Yoon Seo has arrived with Shi Ohn, but he hangs back, not wanting to enter. She tells him to come in. Il Kyu mentions about Do Han’s directive and she tells him to shut it, because she’ll take care of it. This gets a smile from Jin Wook. Do Han arrives. They all stand and Shi Ohn turns away from Do Han, like a kid who’s been yelled at. Do Han looks at Shi Ohn briefly and then turns to Yoon Seo and tells her to come with him into his office.

Do Han asks Yoon Seo about the problem the other day. She’s surprised he knew and he says that the Chief of the HPB Department came and talked to him about it! When Yoon Seo protests, he yells at her to be quiet. Boy, he’s having a bad day. And he tells her never to interfere with Jae Joon’s patients again. Yoon Seo reluctantly agrees.

A teenage girl, Na In Hae, arrives at the Nurses’ Station. She calls herself the official beauty queen of the Pediatrics Department and presents them with a piece of paper indicating her admittance into the hospital via the ER. She’s been a frequent customer, but they hadn’t seen her lately, so they were hoping she was better. Shi Ohn arrives with a chart, on orders from Yoon Seo to give it to them. Hyun seems to be taken with him, since she mentioned the heart warming smell that the hospital has after seeing him.

Nurses’ Break Room. Do Han enters and addresses Shi Ohn, telling him that starting today, he will go home at 6 pm. The other residents are surprised, since this is not usual. Shi Ohn wants to stay and be normal, but Do Han doesn’t want to hear it. Again, Do Han is trying to look out for Shi Ohn and his patients, since Shi Ohn seems to go rogue when not supervised, but he could at least explain himself a little so Shi Ohn can understand.

When Do Han leaves, Yoon Seo follows him. She doesn’t like this development and wants to know why, since Shi Ohn seems to have the ability. Do Han agrees that Shi Ohn has outstanding medical knowledge and diagnosing ability. At least 3 or 4 steps ahead of any of the rest of them. The problem is that Shi Ohn thinks only of healing the patient. When Yoon Seo objects, Do Han says that this concern is not from rational thinking or certainty, but rather because of a knee-jerk reaction due to his training. No, what his problem is, is that he doesn’t understand the politics of things. Do Han says he observed Shi Ohn for two days and he’s just a robot.

Yoon Seo argues that Shi Ohn does have feelings, but Do Han says it’s specifically having the mindset of a doctor that Shi Ohn doesn’t have. Maybe not like you, but he’s gotten the okay from tons of other doctors including YOUR MENTOR, that he has the mindset of a doctor. Man, why are people so prideful sometimes? Do Han says it’s a side affect of his autism. Yoon Seo argues that Shi Ohn just doesn’t know how to express himself. But Do Han won’t hear anything she’s saying, so set in his correct diagnosis.

Do Han mentions the ticking that Shi Ohn displayed under high stress. It’s only a matter of time that Shi Ohn will have an accident. But if he felt your support, he wouldn’t be that way. Why not ask your mentor for help with this? Because you’re the great Do Han. Yoon Seo wants Do Han to be a little more considerate (compassionate) since Shi Ohn it’s totally cured, but Do Han cuts her off and tells her that she should be concerned about the *patient* not Park Shi Ohn. Really? Because you’re so good at that? I sigh. He tells her that if she’s going to neglect her duty because of this unnecessary nuisance, she’ll be out, too. Way to shut her up by threatening her job.

Shi Ohn gets on the bus and Yoon Seo barely makes it before the bus leaves. She tells him that she thought she was going to throw up blood catching up to him. Not getting the idea and being literal, he tells her it may be damage to her esophagus or the gastric barrier (the part of the stomach which contains the acid). She smiles and explains what she meant. She tells him to keep that schedule for a while and eventually he’ll be on on-call duty again.

Shi Ohn’s reaction to her encouragement is to stare ahead. Yoon Seo asks him if he’s sad and he says no. Then his stomach loudly growls. She asks him if he eats. He gives her a list of what he buys from the store, including an American Salad sandwich. She marvels at him eating them *every day.* He tells her he doesn’t get tired of them. Yoon Seo has an idea. She suggests they get off the bus.

Her idea: taking him to the supermarket. She’s going to make him a meal, so he needs to tell her what he wants to eat. Shi Ohn mentions several things and Yoon Seo shoots them all down. He says he’ll just eat onigiri (rice balls that they sell in convenience stores). Yoon Seo acts hurt that he’s turning down her offer. Even though she’s shot down every one of his suggestions for what to eat. She decides they’ll eat egg rolls, seaweed and kimchi. He half-heartedly tells her okay but sighs like he’s dreading what’s coming next when she walks away.

Choong Man is at dinner with Hyun Tae and Hyuk Pil, who is bawling him out for what’s happened with Syung Ho. He’s really angry because today would have been the perfect opportunity to get rid of the director, but the screw up nullifies it. Hyuk Pil starts railing about what a jerk Do Han is, but he realizes Hyun Tae is staring at him. He corrects himself and tells Hyun Tae that Choong Man is the only *brother-in-law* that he has and he can’t send Choong Man back to Woolsan. Hyun Tae smiles like he understands and tells Hyuk Pil he will find a solution. Choong Man immediately rises from his seat and bows and thanks Hyun Tae profusely, pouring him some more tea. Choong Man worries about Woo Suk and Hyun Tae just smiles to himself.

Yoon Seo and Shi Ohn are walking with their groceries. She tells him he’s a pervert because he didn’t wake her up and send her home when she wandered into the wrong apartment. Even though he *did* try to make you leave. It doesn’t get a reaction like she was wanting so she tells him that he did it because he wanted to see her half-naked. He just stares ahead, which is her confirmation that she’s right. She scolds him but tells him he has good taste. Then she says her nickname in med school was Godiva, short for god-given body. This gets a look and Shi Ohn asks what kind of god it was. She snaps that she doesn’t know. Again, he’s not confirming her desire that he find her attractive.

After a moment, Shi Ohn tells Yoon Seo that it wasn’t that he wanted to see her half-naked, he just was staring at her face. When she asks why he would do that, he tells her it’s because she’s pretty. His face is really sweet right now. Squish! Yoon Seo isn’t sure how to react to such sweet honesty. Shi Ohn tells her that the moon shining down on her face is very pretty. And they just happen to be out in the moonlight right now. Aw. She deflects by telling him that he’s got skills (is smooth). And then she walks ahead, with him looking after her.

Shi Ohn’s apartment. There are two pairs of slippers. Coincidence? Or lazy writing? Why would Shi Ohn have an extra pair of slippers for smaller feet when the only person likely to visit him would be Woo Suk? Unpacking, she realizes that she forgot the canola oil. She sends Shi Ohn out to the corner store to get some (not the convenience store downstairs because it’s expensive).

After Shi Ohn leaves, she decides to clean his apartment. She tosses the Chocopies from his birthday and accidentally includes the green scalpel. Although why she wouldn’t notice that she swept it into the trash, since she was using *just her hand.* Again, it’s these little details that make things realistic and not seem plot driven.

Do Han and Chae Kyung are out at the bar where we saw Yoon Seo getting drunk. The bartender greets them. Oh! He calls Chae Kyung Do Han’s fiancé. Really? I would never have thought that from the amount of intimacy I’ve seen from them. Do Han tells his ‘hyung’ to give them the usual, which is red blood and IVs. Apparently it’s been a while since they’ve been there, which the bartender attributes to them being richer now. He leaves to go get their drinks and he’ll surprise them with their food order.

Chae Kyung looks around and wonders if this is the bar that she asked Do Han out in when she was drunk. Really, I would never have guessed that for her character. He smiles but isn’t quite as tickled as she is. She wants to know what’s on his mind. He says it’s just the hospital and patients. She tells him he needs to cheat on her once to get himself out of this emotional coma that he’s in. He tells her not to say stupid stuff. Because that is one of the dumbest things I think I’ve ever heard someone say. She seemed so much smarter than that. She says it’s not stupid. She thinks it’s a method that will work to wake him up before he comes back to her. Yeah, because that’s what usually happens when a man cheats, becomes more committed to you. Do Han just smiles and says that doctors are just like this, sometimes tired and sick of their life, but then they get over it. He says that eventually, he’ll learn to enjoy it all.

Yoon Seo is cooking, although it doesn’t look like it’s going well, while Shi Ohn is looking for the green scalpel. He’s getting more frantic by the minute. She’s muttering about the egg not rolling. So I guess she didn’t mean what Americans call egg rolls. Are those even something they eat in the East? She asks him why he isn’t scooping the rice. He asks her if she’s seen the scalpel. She tells his she threw away everything that was on the counter. He’s pretty calm as he asks her where she threw it out and when she tells him where the trash can is, he rushes outside. She rushes after him, leaving the pan on the stove. I really hope it doesn’t catch fire or something.

Outside, Shi Ohn starts ripping into garbage sacks. Yoon Seo just watches him and doesn’t offer to help. Shi Ohn finds the scalpel (rather quickly) and plops on the ground as he looks at it. He face is starting to look sad. Yoon Seo asks him what it is, if it’s something important. He glares up at her. He just frantically searched through the trash for something *not* important, Yoon Seo. After he glares, Shi Ohn starts to sulk. He gets up and starts to walk back inside. She apologizes and tells him she was just trying to clean things up. He tells her not to come into his house again, she doesn’t need to cook for him and he’ll eat origini.

Do Han’s walking down the street, burdened by his earlier conversation with Yoon Seo.

Inside his apartment, Shi Ohn is making sure that the scalpel is clean and hasn’t been harmed. And no fire from the stuff on the stove, thank goodness. The phone rings. It’s Do Han. He considers whether to answer it before he decides to do it. When he does, Do Han checks the number he was calling. Oh, it’s Yoon Seo’s phone. Shi Ohn identifies himself. Like Do Han wouldn’t recognize him. Do Han asks why he’s answering Yoon Seo’s phone. Shi Ohn tells him to hold on and goes to give the phone to Yoon Seo.

Yoon Seo is coming down the stairs, having realized that her stuff is still at Shi Ohn’s. Shi Ohn meets her at the bottom of the stairs, carrying the phone and her bag, and shoves the phone toward her, telling her that Do Han’s on the phone. Then he shoves her bag into her arm and leaves. Do Han asks whether she’s acting like Shi Ohn’s guardian now. Even though he was probably going to apologize, now he’s irritated so he won’t. He tells her to check Eun Ji’s PT (prothrombin time – a test which measures how quickly a patient’s blood clots) tomorrow and hangs up.

That night, Shi Ohn lays in bed and remembers playing doctor with his brother, who is ticklish and ends up tickling Shi Ohn back. He closes his eyes and imagines his brother there, stroking his head. I’m crying as he starts talking to his hyung, telling him he had a hard day. Hyung smiles and pats his back softly.

The next day, Shi Ohn is in the break room, studying. Yoon Seo is also there. She decides to try and talk to him. She asks if he’s still mad. His response, say nothing but lean in closer to the textbook he’s studying. She tells him that she said she was sorry. He leans even closer to the book. Heh. She asks him if he can tell her what was wrong and then if the scalpel was a gift from his first love. His response: put his face into the book he’s reading. Hysterical! Jin Wook appears at the door and tells Shi Ohn to come with him to the NICU. He happily escapes Yoon Seo’s attention.

Hyun Tae is meeting with Woo Suk. Woo Suk has called an urgent meeting of the ethics committee. As he should. It was GROSS negligence on Choong Man’s part, in more than one area. Woo Suk says that it’s serious. Hyun Tae suggests that they let it go, to keep the Pediatrics Department from becoming the focus of criticism. Hyun Tae says that it may look like retaliation for Choong Man opposing Shi Ohn’s appointment. Woo Suk says that his logic makes no sense. Because IT DOESN’T. Hyun Tae asks Woo Suk to reconsider what he’s planning, for Shi Ohn’s sake.

At the NICU, Jin Wook tells the baby’s mother than his slow intestinal movement is due to a lack of development of the intestines. Across the room, Jae Joon is telling a family that intestinal necrosis (where the tissue is dying) has begun and with the baby’s weight being only 550 grams (1.2 pounds) and his stomach having issues, too, that surgery to help him is impossible. The mother still wants to do it, but Jae Joon tells her that even with the surgery, the baby’s survival rate is very low. The mother starts to plead with him. It took her seven years to become pregnant and she hasn’t even gotten to name him yet. Jae Joon tells them to prepare their hearts for the worst. Jae Joon bows and excuses himself. Shi Ohn is staring thoughtfully at the baby.

Woo Suk has stupidly taken Hyun Tae’s ‘suggestion’ and has cancelled the ethics committee hearing, deciding instead to give Choong Man a strong warning. He doesn’t look totally comfortable or confident as he’s talking to Do Han. Do Han rightfully says that it’s not enough and wants to know if he’s doing this in exchange for Shi Ohn’s acceptance at the hospital. Woo Suk sounds offended when he asks Do Han what he means. Do Han declares that he’s tired of seeing the toll all this is taking and he’ll take care of Shi Ohn as he pleases. Then Do Han storms out.

Do Han basically storms into the break room and begins to glare at Shi Ohn. Yoon Seo rises with a question on her face. Shi Ohn slowly gets up and it’s obvious he’s afraid of what’s coming. Do Han remembers Woo Suk asking him to help Shi Ohn, the last request of a powerless teacher and then Chae Kyung telling him that they approved Shi Ohn’s hiring as a scheme to force Woo Suk out. Yoon Seo finally asks Do Han if something happened. Do Han drops his head to gain control of himself and just turns to go into his office.

But he’s stopped by Jae Joon who yells his name and then grabs Do Han by the collar. Jae Joon warned him not to be arrogant! Do Han is rightfully clueless and tells Jae Joon to get his hands off! The other residents enters during the commotion. Jae Joon’s pissed because Do Han took away one of his patients. Do Han, of course, doesn’t know what’s going on. Yoon Seo tries to diffuse things by saying there must be a misunderstanding. Jae Joon yells at her to shut her mouth! Do Han turns to look at Yoon Seo and the episode ends. With Shi Ohn looking a little guilty.

Thoughts

Well, a lot happened on today’s show, particularly highlighting Do Han’s skill but also his pride. Right now, Do Han is really a frustrating character for me, because of this pride. I can understand that he’s been put in a difficult situation, but if he would just take a little time to not clump Shi Ohn into a ready-made mold, he would have a lot easier time. I appreciate that he’s trying to honor his mentor’s wish, while at the same time trying to avoid the politics of this very political hospital. I’ve worked in two university hospitals, and I don’t remember politics being quite that extreme. Several times, he tried to do things to keep Shi Ohn out of trouble. If he would just EXPLAIN a little, Shi Ohn would go along. He’s not that stubborn. He just doesn’t understand what they’re thinking. They’re expecting him to have all this institutional knowledge and he doesn’t yet. And Do Han just doesn’t understand that. Why don’t they talk to the other hospitals that he worked at, to find out how to make him effective. He’s obviously a good doctor, or he would have been kicked out long ago. If Do Han would just take a little time to consider outside of his box… But that’s not Do Han’s character right now.

One thing that’s a little annoying to me were the parts where it felt a little contrived this week. The last scene in particular felt way over the top for me. And a few things felt out of character (like Woo Suk not calling the ethics committee) and manipulated, that they were happening to cause tension rather than because it’s a logical progression of events.

Again, I’m disgusted by Choong Man and Hyuk Pil. But, hey, apparently they’re *family.* Which means that you can get a job that you’re not qualified for and act like a god even though you’re a crappy doctor. Do Han’s frustration almost feels like he’s had to clean up after Choong Man before. It also really annoys me how both Choong Man and his buddy, Jae Joon, are all about Choong Man having the respect he deserves, which in their minds means just let them do whatever and don’t ever argue. I hate that there are people in the world like this. I hope by the end of the series that Choong Man loses his job, although he may not because that’s not what can happen in real life.

I was really surprised to find out that Chae Kyung is Do Han’s fiancée. How did that happen? They actually seemed a little looser with each other than they do with other people, but their relationship doesn’t seem too deep. And I can’t believe that she suggested he mess around on her to spice up his life. Considering he’s part of the love triangle, that was a really bad idea. And considering that you’ve done nothing to help Do Han deal with the deal of the boy, and it seems like he hasn’t even told you, you’re not anywhere near getting into his heart.

I hope Shi Ohn gets some understanding soon from the doctors around him. The nurses seem very accepting of him. Heck, they have to deal with stupid doctors like Choong Man who don’t care about the patients first, so a guy who’s socially awkward but all about the patients, he’s a good guy.

Joo Won did a great job of embodying the physicality of an autistic person. It struck me particularly during the scene where they were in the operating room. His blood vessels were bulging because of the amount of tension in his body, which was very real. That scene, I can seen it going so differently if Do Han wasn’t such of a bully. Shi Ohn starting to freak out. Do Han placing his hand on his shoulder and telling him gently to calm down. Not in a coddling way but something like “Shi Ohn. Calm down. We’re good. It’s fine.” So that Shi Ohn knows that Do Han is supporting him rather than about to punch him again. And Shi Ohn could totally handle the surgery. But Do Han needs to learn this, being human with other people.

I’m worried about Hyun Tae’s master agenda. I think he’s colluding with someone outside the hospital to take it down. Makes me worried.

Please let these people learn how to interact with Shi Ohn so that he can really learn what he needs to while proving himself capable. Please.

And I loved the scream cough. Heehee.
