Thirty Five
EMIL’s in the factory begging for Chae Won to forgive her and get back together with Chul Kyu. Chae Won isn’t buying it. Because she’s not *that* stupid. Besides, she’s got a much better man now who is *not* a Mama’s boy by any stretch of the imagination. EMIL says that she’s regretted it since it happened, that she was greedy and selfish. She weeps over Chul Kyu’s depression. Chae Won tells EMIL that it has nothing to do with her and EMIL should leave. EMIL declares that the only one who can save Chul Kyu is her. Then she bad-mouths her current daughter-in-law. Chae Won can’t believe what she’s hearing. At one point EMIL declares that *she’s being sincere.* Sure she is… She takes Chae Won’s hand and asks Chae Won to start over. Chae Won snatches her hand away and asks EMIL how she can say that after all that EMIL’s done to her. EMIL cuts her off and tries to play the Chul Kyu card again. Chae Won declares that he has nothing to do with her anymore and EMIL should please leave. Chae Won leaves the factory. EMIL mutters that Chae Won is strong-willed.
EMIL chases after Chae Won and blocks her path. She tells Chae Won that they aren’t done talking. Chae Won again says that she has nothing to do with Chul Kyu. EMIL tries to use guilt. Ooo, yes! Oehalmeoni and Oma just happen to come outside at that moment. Go get the flour and the salt! EMIL is all polite *now.* She calls Oma her in-law. Oma can’t believe that. EMIL keeps going, asking them to take Chul Kyu back. Oma can’t believe what’s coming out of her mouth. Chae Won tells them that she has no intention of doing it, so they don’t have to worry. Where’s the salt and flour?! EMIL keeps going. Oehalmeoni mentions the flour and declares that there’s no one there who wants to listen to EMIL’s nonsense. And EMIL’s sure that they’re going to cave.
Inside, Oehalmeoni just makes sure that Chae Won’s not considering going back to Chul Kyu. Oma declares that if EMIL comes back again – bucket of salt.
Se Yoon arrives at the construction site. He’s brought refreshments. Appa pulls him aside and tells Se Yoon that he doesn’t need Se Yoon’s help. Se Yoon adds that he’s also there to ask for Appa’s blessing to officially date Chae Won. Appa repeats that Se Yoon needs his parents approval before he’ll give that. Se Yoon declares that he will get his parents’ permission, but to not see Chae Won until then, it would be too difficult. Se Yoon says that he could sneak around behind Appa’s back, but he doesn’t want to because he wants to date Chae Won without feeling guilty. Se Yoon asks again and Appa’s not budging. Appa tells Se Yoon to leave, but Se Yoon calls after Appa that he’ll wait for Appa to go out drinking again.
EMIL’s back and Joo Ri’s eagerly awaiting the results of the visit. EMIL says she took the barrier down and it’s only a matter of time before Chae Won’s back and Joo Ri’s with Se Yoon. Chul Kyu comes downstairs, hung over and probably still drunk. EMIL tells him about the begging trip. TSGM and Hong Joo arrive with Mrs. Park. EMIL is immediately offended that the woman just came in. TSGM tries to be as haughty. When TSGM and Hong Joo are alone, TSGM says she’s leaving for Paris for the next three years so only Chul Kyu will be there to take care of Hong Joo. Then TSGM leaves. Hong Joo starts to cry.
Chae Won is making noodles and fingering them. Oeharabeoji comes in and tells her that she alone can rebuild the business. Chae Won asks him to go get a retest from a doctor that Se Yoon talked to. But, most likely because this is a k-drama, Oeharabeoji will probably pass away before the series is over. AILs are clucking over Auntie going on that blind date YUncle comes in yells at her. On the way to the date, Auntie runs into Opera Man, who tells her she looks nice with her recently straightened. YSibs hurry up with YUncle yelling at both of them. Auntie storms off and Opera Man resents being called an old gigolo.
Just outside the construction Se Yoon is stacking pallets. One of the workers sees him and they get into conversation. Worker asks Se Yoon why Appa is mad at him; did he have an affair or something? Se Yoon says it’s nothing like that. Worker makes Se Yoon eat some leftovers. Appa sees Se Yoon being fed and smiles. One of the other workers notices what Se Yoon’s eating and asks about stopping them, since it’s spoiled food from yesterday. Appa thinks it must be fine since Se Yoon’s happily eating it. And I don’t relish how sick he’s going to get, since he can’t taste that it’s bad. Darn psychologically dull senses!
Mom and Dad are sitting down to eat. Dad wants to know where Se Yoon is. Is he meeting up with Chae Won. Dad can’t understand what Se Yoon is thinking. Mom mentioned going to visit Appa. Mom tells Dad that they have a noodle factory in Paju. Which I bet Dad is familiar with. Or will realize that his favorite meal from childhood was made with noodles from the factory.
Oma’s telling the AILs about EMIL’s recent visit. Oma can’t believe how disgusting EMIL is. EAIL doesn’t necessarily think it’s a horrible thing, what EMIL’s suggesting, much to the other’s amazement. YAIL mentions Se Yoon and EAIL says that Mom would probably be *worse* than EMIL. EAIL asks Oma what she thinks and Oma says she’s not sure since Mom changed. EMIL points out how Se Yoon is a 5th generation only son.
EMIL yells at Hong Joo, who has no place else to go. Hong Joo doesn’t want to leave or get a divorce. EMIL decides to pack Hong Joo’s things for her. Mrs. Park interferes. Chul Kyu comes in and asks his mother to stop. EMIL asks him if he’s going to stay married to Hong Joo. Chul Kyu doesn’t answer. As her answer, Hong Joo and Mrs. Park go feed Coco.
Se Yoon is starting to get sick from the food, but he ignores it when Appa gets off work. Appa turns down Se Yoon’s offer for going to get a drink and just leaves. Se Yoon makes over to the noodle factory, where he goes to see Chae Won. He tells her that he got a bad mark from Appa today. She notices that he’s sweating. When she starts asking what’s wrong, Se Yoon finally has to throw up.
Chae Won, Oma and Appa are standing outside the bathroom where Se Yoon is inside vomiting. Oma wonders if he ate something bad. Appa remembers the question about the makgeolli and pyeonyuk being spoiled. He mentions it, but comments that Se Yoon surely would have known they were bad *by the taste.* Chae Won knows Se Yoon’s secret, so she rushes out to the drug store.
Oma’s mopping Se Yoon’s head. He’s now in bed. She tells him that Chae Won left for some medicine. Why did he leave the bathroom? Food poisoning is *not* fun and he could vomit some more. Se Yoon apologizes for making them worry. Oma asks him about the pork tasting strange. He doesn’t answer. Chae Won arrives with the medicine. Oma leaves. Se Yoon tells Chae Won that since he lost his sense of taste, this has happened several times. What about your sense of smell? It wouldn’t have *smelled* bad? She starts to sniffle. He tries to assure her that he’s fine. She reaches over and hugs him and tells him that she feels bad for him. He jokes about this all going according to his plan. Chae Won doesn’t think it’s funny. He tells her that regardless of how it seems to others, he’s a man with many shortcomings and that’s why he needs her. Chae Won promises to never leave him. She hugs him again and he groans with pain. When she’s concerned he says that his heart feels like it’s going to burst because of her. She shoves him in response. Se Yoon’s felling dizzy so he lays back down, cuddling her hand to his chest.
After Se Yoon falls asleep, Chae Won goes downstairs. Appa can’t understand what happened, but Oma notices that Chae Won isn’t saying anything.
Auntie’s out on her blind date. He compliments her on being more beautiful that her picture. She glances over at YSibs, who are watching everything. Suitor played piano in college – another thing they have in common. He asks who her favorite musician is; she answers Opera Man. Suitor’s never heard of him. She replies that Opera Man’s a legendary tenor. YSibs think the date is going well. YAIL just can’t figure out why Auntie would like Opera Man. YUncle doesn’t want her to talk about if for fear of jinxing the date. Auntie and Suitor are leaving the restaurant arm and arm. YUncle almost blasts his whistle because of how forward Auntie is being but YAIL stops him. Once Auntie and Suitor are out of sight, Auntie lets go and thanks Suitor for helping with the ruse, including going along with her rejection. He’s happy to help. And Auntie must have told him about Opera Man. What a nice guy.
Se Yoon checks in Se Yoon’s room and sees he’s not home. She wondering why he hasn’t checked in. Chae Won’s still nursing her. Appa thinks that they need to wake him but Oma shuttles him out of the room when Chae Won says that she’ll do it soon. The phone ring and Chae Won answers it. Because she’s being stupid. I understand she doesn’t Mom to worry, but this is not smart. And she has a habit of not ignoring phone calls. Mom is surprised to hear a woman’s voice on her son’s phone. Chae Won greets her. See, even more stupid. On hearing her name, Mom rushes right over to the noodle house.
Se Yoon’s now up and downstairs with Oma and Appa. He inquires after the grandparents. Because he’s super awesome. Appa has to scold Se Yoon before the guy leaves. Appa wants to take Se Yoon home in the delivery van. Not wanting to inconvenience Appa, he turns him down and Appa uses it to try and pick a fight. Is Se Yoon too good to ride in the van? Se Yoon assures Appa it’s not that, so Appa’s going to drive him anyway. But he doesn’t have his keys. Oma offers to get them while Appa glares and Se Yoon feels very uncomfortable.
Outside the noodle house, Mom runs into EAIL. Mom discovers that she’s related to Chae Won. EAIL mentions about Se Yoon eating bad food and being sick. Mom asks EAIL how she could do this, not tell Mom about the relationship. She accuses EAIL of deceiving her about the relationship. EAIL naturally gets offended. Se Yoon, Appa and Chae Won come outside. Mom shoots daggers at Chae Won. Appa hates it. Oma can’t find the car keys. Mom yells at Se Yoon for being there and doesn’t want to listen when EAIL tries to explain. Mom demands Se Yoon come to the car and almost stops when EAIL declares that she’s so rude. Mom’s walking to the car so she doesn’t see Oma. Se Yoon wishes Oma and Appa goodnight and Mom hears him refer to them as Abunim and Omeonim and gets pissed he’s calling someone Mother but she doesn’t turn around. EAIL tells Se Yoon that Mom is really upset, so he should calm Mom down when he gets home. Because that’s someone with food poisoning wants to do.
At home, Mom yells at Se Yoon about calling Oma and Appa ‘Abunim’ and ‘Omeonim.’ Is he going to continue to disappoint her like this? Se Yoon declares that Chae Won’s parents are his parents too. Mom shrieks her response, bringing Dad into the conversation. Dad yells and Se Yoon says he thought at least Dad would understand his feelings. Since Mom’s situation was even worse – she had *no* family and was an orphan. But Se Yoon doesn’t mention that, just that Dad faced lots of opposition from Dad’s parents but he married Mom anyway. Which seems to hit home a little. Mom declares that she was conspired against. Mom still doesn’t think that this is a reason for her to accept Chae Won. Because Mom is just a big old black pot. Mom is super mad as she asks him how he can step on her mercilessly like this. Is she going to get dizzy with head pain again? And did I call it. Se Yoon declares this is all a misunderstanding but Dad yells that he should shut his mouth! You know, Se Yoon can just up and leave like last time. Then where will you be? Se Yoon is hurt by how his parents are acting.
Chae Won’s at home, squeezing lemon juice. She's making some lemon jelly for Se Yoon. Oma answers and Chae Won confides that Se Yoon has lost his sense of taste because of an accident. Chae Won explains that she’s making the jelly to help him get his sense of taste back, starting with sour. She declares that after watching him in pain, she’s no longer going to run away but she’s going to protect him. And help him with this. Oma is pleased at her terrific daughter.
Mom is sulking in bed. Se Yoon enters and tries to make peace but she pretends to be asleep. He apologizes anyway and kisses her before he leaves.
Se Yoon goes to work, where Chae Won is waiting outside. She gives him the present. She tells him that she read that taste is from memory and you feel taste with your heart, not your taste buds. Which is why the sense of smell *never* affects the sense of taste, because it’s all done with the heart. But in this case, it’s really a heart issue. But still. She tells him that they’ll work at it little by little. Joo Ri arrives to see them.
EMIL’s in Chul Kyu’s room, having the driver put back the wedding picture of Chul Kyu and Chae Won. Hong Joo arrives and EMIL’s obnoxious. Chul Kyu enters and he’s not happy. He tries to take it down. Hong Joo tells him to stop, because he looks better with Chae Won than he does with her. Hong Joo leaves. Chul Kyu tells EMIL to stop and EMIL challenges him about what he’s planning to do.
Chae Won arrives home where there’s product placement, er, Bo Reum is playing with Oehalmeoni with his Legos. Chae Won has Bo Reum’s Children’s Day present: a Lego Star Wars X Wing. Oehalmeoni declares that Se Yoon is so thoughtful. Oehalmeoni wishes Auntie would find someone like that. Phone rings; Suitor’s mom. Suitor’s said he didn’t like Auntie.
Noodle Factory. Oeharabeoji announces the next contest: Noodles of Spring. Auntie isn’t there. She’s sneaking around her parents’ room. EAIL goes to get Auntie. She comes down stairs just in time to see Auntie rush out of the house. EAIL finds the trashed room and concludes that Auntie has run off with the deed to the land. EAIL returns to the factory and announces what Auntie did. Everyone is upset, except Oeharabeoji. He just goes back inside. The Sibs decide to split up and find her. Although it’s obvious where she went: Opera Man’s house. But Oma’s smart.
Auntie’s arrived at Opera Man. She offers him the deed in exchange for marrying her. Opera Man can’t believe it. When Auntie doesn’t understand what the problem is, Opera Man finally fesses up to the truth. Auntie yells that she doesn’t care about money or those things! The Sibs arrive and immediately YUncle’s going to punch Opera Man but Auntie stops him.
The Sibs drag Auntie home, where Appa and Oma are waiting for news. As they’re dragging her inside the house, a car arrives. Mom? Nope. It’s Oeharabeoji’s first cousin. He’s heard a rumor about the land that Oeharabeoji’s going to sell, so he came right away. Uh-oh. Something seems fishy, especially since it looks like First Cousin has lawyer with him. Oeharabeoji wants to talk to First Cousin inside, but First Cousin instead starts yelling at him for trying to hand off land that belongs *to the clan*! And Oeharabeoji is busted.
Thirty Six.
Oeharabeoji is busted. Everyone is surprised, except Oma. Oeharabeoji’s inside with First Cousin and the other members of the clan. Oeharabeoji assures them he had no intention of stealing the land. They explain that they want to set the land up as a corporation with several trustees. Oeharabeoji is happy to go ahead and stamp the legal agreement.
Once the Clan Elders have left, Oeharabeoji explains about his lie to everyone and he thought it was the only way to save the noodle factory. The AILs faint at the news. Chae Won goes and gets some water and Oehalmeoni *spits* it both of the women’s faces to wake them. Yuck. Oehalmeoni gets weak and then the AILs faint again.
Opera Man is pacing, worrying about what’s going to happen to Auntie.
Back at the Noodle Factory, the Sibs are moaning over being poor now. Oma offers to explain, but Oeharabeoji stops her and apologizes. YUncle yells at Oeharabeoji about ruining his future and storms off. He goes into the factory and throws a fit. But when it comes to trashing the noodles, he can’t. EAIL has packed her suitcase and is leaving. Chae Won goes into the factory and starts to clean up the mess. At least he didn’t trash the noodles.
Se Yoon’s in with Dad at the company. He has an idea for a noodle competition. Dad likes the idea. Dad brings up the fact that Chae Won’s family owns a noodle factory. Is that the place that Dad sent Se Yoon a while back? Se Yoon confirms it was.
Mom is stewing, drinking tea, that EAIL is Chae Won’s aunt. Of course she thinks that EAIL is conspiring to put Chae Won and Se Yoon together. A package arrives from the orphanage. It’s a bottle with something lavender in it, maybe a baby thing? Mom is horrified at the sight of it. She calls the orphanage and finds out that it’s from the Director.
EMIL's in Chul Kyu’s room, searching through the drawers for the jewelry she gave Hong Joo. Hong Joo ‘happily’ hands it over is sarcastic with EMIL. EMIL even goes as far as ask for the wedding ring, too. Downstairs, presents and a gift basket are sitting on the dining room table. EMIL orders her driver to take it to Chae Won’s house, while Hong Joo is standing there. EMIL orders Mrs. Park to help, too.
Chae Won is in the factory making noodles. The driver arrives with the presents. Chae Won tells him to take them back, but he runs off quickly. Get the delivery van and take them back. Chae Won uses the delivery van to take them back and Chul Kyu arrives as she’s leaving. Chul Kyu stops her with a Yeobo! She doesn’t want to hear it and tries to leave. Chul Kyu declares that EMIL has realizes that Chae Won was a great DIL. Chae Won doesn’t care. He keeps acting like she’s secretly pining away, hoping that they’ll change so that she can come running back. She has Se Yoon. Why would she still want you? She tells him his words are meaningless. Chul Kyu argues that their relationship was pretty good, if you don’t consider EMIL. Chae Won declares she’s not interested because she’s found someone that she loves. She loves Se Yoon and they are officially dating! Chul Kyu asks with whose permission and Chae Won replies that it’s with *hers.* She gets in the truck and drives off.
Se Yoon’s at the factory, fingering the noodles and smiling. Chae Won arrives. He asks about the noodles since they seem different. Se Yoon tells Chae Won about the noodle competition and suggests she enter as a corporation. The prize? A retail agreement with the company to sell the noodles… a business partnership. And Mom can’t object to the CEO of a company dating her son. Chae Won thinks a minute and declares that she’ll do it, since winning will help the factory recover, plus gets that parental approval thing. Then she asks Se Yoon why he’s just looking at her. He teases her, asking if she’s the woman he knows, since she’s changed to be such a strong and combative warrior. She laughs. They get to work on the noodles. Se Yoon sneaks a kiss. Se Yoon has some accidents but he soon gets the hang off things.
Appa and Oma are talking. She’s disappointed in the Sibs. As she should be. Appa mentions Oeharabeoji looking weaker. He’s worried that Oeharabeoji’s going to get worse. Oma almost tells the secret. In their room, Oehalmeoni is scolding Oeharabeoji about the whole thing. Appa and Oma arrive with his herbal medicine. Se Yoon and Chae Won arrive. Everyone is happy to see him except Appa. Who’s still being a butthead.
Outside Appa and Chae Won are talking. He’s not happy with Chae Won telling him that she’s can’t break up with Se Yoon. Appa mentions Mom’s nasty gaze when she visited. Appa mentions his concerns about Chae Won having an EMIL and EFIL. Chae Won says she doesn’t want to worry about that, she just needs to be by her side. Oma arrives to get Chae Won because Se Yoon is leaving. Appa can’t believe that Oma and Chae Won are sticking together.
The Sibs are at a restaurant eating pork. EAIL is just moaning. They get distracted by Auntie being mopey. Their scolding makes her stomp off. And EAIL yells at Ajumma for another glass of Soju. Opera Man has dragged out a tin box with his old fan letters. He starts to read them and reads Auntie’s letters. Auntie is cute with braids. She basically tells him that she likes him, but not really. It cheers him and he starts to play the piano. Auntie’s arrived and is listening to him play. And probably getting some meaning out of the piece he’s playing.
Mom’s got that purple crocheted bracelet and has taken it to her room. She compares it to a pink one that was stuck with some baby clothes. She can’t understand why Director would send it instead of dying and letting everything stay buried. Mom starts to weep. Se Yoon arrives and Mom tries to play things off. Se Yoon apologizes again and Mom tells him that she was being too sensitive. He explains that he meant that his and Chae Won’s intentions are the same as Mom and Dad’s, when they went against Dad’s parents. He tries to get Mom to reconsider.
Chul Kyu is drinking again. Joo Ri comes down and hears the news. Joo Ri suggests that if Chul Kyu got divorced from Hong Joo that Chae Won would come back.
Restaurant. Kids are asleep and AILs are passed out. Uncles get honest with each other. Guy comes and tells them they’re closing. When YUncle wakes up YAIL, he calls her wife and she lets the cat out of the bag about their divorce. EAIL starts laughing about them being in trouble. EAIL wants to go to a hotel. EUncle just wants to go home. AILs start crying. Because they are drunk. Then they start attacking Uncles.
Next day, Mom’s helping Dad get ready for work. Dad mentions that Chae Won comes from a family he knows. Dad’s father always complimented the noodle factory, a place where people make noodles with tradition and conscience. And weren’t loan sharks before they got successful. Mom mentions that it was EAIL’s inlaws’ house. Dad finds that interesting, too. It seems like Chae Won might be more respectable than they thought. Mom’s thinking now. Especially since EAIL was your friend and worthy of your association. They’re not such beggars after all. Arg!
Se Yoon has arrived to take Oeharabeoji to see the specialist. Oma thanks him and calls it a burdensome favor, which gives Se Yoon the opportunity to declare that Chae Won’s family is *his* family. Chae Won and Se Yoon take Oeharabeoji to the doctor. As they leave, Oma thinks how much she’s already become attached to Se Yoon.
Oeharabeoji goes through various tests. Specialist announces that the cancer has spread to Oeharabeoji’s bones. He’s going to die. Oeharabeoji should get his affairs in order. Oeharabeoji has max 6 months. Chae Won cries and Se Yoon tries not to. Oeharabeoji is outside looking at the flowers. He asks them what the doctor said. Se Yoon lies about Oeharabeoji getting better. Oeharabeoji busts him immediately, but says that because Se Yoon’s such a bad liar, he won’t give Chae Won heartaches, so he approves. Chae Won hugs Oeharabeoji and he declares that he’s lived life well with no regrets. Plus Chae Won’s said she’s take care of the business, so he can die with no regrets. Oeharabeoji takes and puts Chae Won and Se Yoon’s hands together. Oeharabeoji tells Se Yoon that from the time they first met, he liked Se Yoon and thought that Se Yoon must be Chae Won’s mate. He leaves Chae Won in his hands. Chae Won cries as they walk back to the car.
YSibs are sneaking into the noodle factory with a cart. They’re there to take bags of flour. They get busted by Oma and Oehalmeoni. YAIL asks Oma why she didn’t says anything about the money, since it looks like she already knew it was a lie. Oma doesn’t answer, just clears her throat. At the hotel, EAIL wants to go crawling back to Mom. EAIL arrives to find Mom in bed. EAIL mentions Se Yoon and says that she tried to get the OTP to break up. Mom can’t believe it. Mom mentions that Se Yoon already has a fiancée. EAIL asks if it’s Joo Ri. Mom admits it is and EAIL tells her she’s really strange. How can Mom leave Se Yoon to EMIL, who made him into a man having an affair? And so the real story comes out.
EMIL is at the office. Joo Ri arrives to complain about Chae Won and Se Yoon. EMIL declares that she has an idea. And I am worried. At home, Chul Kyu’s pacing because he’s decided to divorce Hong Joo. She refuses. So Chul Kyu throws a fit.
Se Yoon arrives home to a waiting Mom. She asks why he didn’t say anything about what EMIL did to him, to Chae Won. He asks how she found out. Mom tells him she would never forced the engagement if she had known. Mom asks if that’s why he couldn’t give his heart to Joo Ri and Se Yoon declares that the only woman he can give it to is Chae Won. Mom’s still not happy.
Chae Won’s working on the computer. Appa comes to visit. They discuss the competition. Chae Won’s pretty certain that the Sibs will get over it and come back. Appa mentions that Chae Won seems happier and more confident.
Next day, Chae Won’s off for a date with Se Yoon. And bringing Oma at Se Yoon’s request. It’s demo day.
Mom’s at the office and comes across Joo Ri, who cheerfully greets her. Mom is less warm than usual. Chae Won and Oma arrive at the company. Oma waits outside while Chae Won goes inside, narrowly missing Mom. Se Yoon meets Chae Won in the lobby. Mom sees Oma outside, but Oma doesn’t see her. Upstairs, Chae Won submits her noodles. Mom goes over to Oma and just slaps her without saying anything. Oma can’t believe Mom did that. Mom yells at Oma and Oma declares that she can only take so much. She almost strikes Mom but doesn’t and Chae Won and Se Yoon come outside.
