Who Are You? (tvN) Episode 1 Recap

Who-Are-You_01-001

Okay, so I wasn’t really planning on watching this one yet, but I wanted to see how its ghost stories compare to Master’s Sun. I’ve since watched 8 episodes of the show, so I’m rewatching and recapping as I go. Compared to the other shows that I’m recapping, I’m not as emotionally invested in the characters or what happens, but I am interested enough to keep watching.

The episode starts with a shipping freighter. The date: 2007.07.22. The time: 23:51 PM. The man who will become our ghost detective is walking down a hallway on the ship. He’s listening for something and decides to draw his gun. He makes his way to what I guess is the cargo hold, because there’s a group of shady characters gathered. They’re looking at a pile of brick. But it’s revealed that it’s silver bars in disguise. Lee Hyung Joon (Kim Jae Wook) smiles to himself, probably because he’s got them, and tries to radio his boss. Unfortunately the feedback from the radio reveals his location, so a chase begins.

Who-Are-You_01-002  Who-Are-You_01-004

At one point Hyung Joon’s surrounded and he draws his gun. None of the 12 thugs around him seems to have a gun, because they’re all afraid of the threat. He shoots into the air, which alerts out heroine, Yang Shi Ohn (So Yi Hyun), that he’s in danger. She was looking at something on the ground and since they focused on it after she left the frame, I’m guessing it’ll be important in the story later. I cannot tell what it is, but it’s black.

It’s a dramatic chase, at least according to the music, and the guys chasing Hyung Joon are carrying rods, so I guess smugglers with no guns. Like *that’s* realistic. The silver they’re smuggling is better business than selling drugs (according to one of the baddies) but they don’t bring guns to protect their assets. Right. Anyway. Hyung Joon rounds a corner and comes face-to-face with someone he knows. I say this because instead of pointing his gun or punching them like he did with the other thugs, he stops and gapes at the person. Being 8 episodes in, this should have been a clue to where some of the plot was going, but, like I said, I was just watching this first episode to compare and see if I like it.

Who-Are-You_01-005  Who-Are-You_01-006  Who-Are-You_01-005a

Shi Ohn arrives onboard in time to see Hyung Joon pointing his gun at someone. There’s a couple of thugs behind him. Whoever he’s talking to, pulls out a gun and shoots Hyung Joon dead. How does he not see the gun? They’re literally 2 feet from each other. But, I guess for plot’s sake, he missed it. The look on Hyung Joon’s face (when they show it) is sheer determination, so maybe that’s why he missed the obvious.

Who-Are-You_01-007a  Who-Are-You_01-008

The look on Hyung Joon’s face as he falls to the ground is shock and betrayal. Shi Ohn screams, “No!” even though we don’t hear it (musical score was playing to highlight the !drama! of the moment), so she alerts them to her presence. So another chase. For some reason, she doesn’t run off the ship, even though it seemed like she was right by the off-ramp. Instead she ends up in the cargo hold where she sees the silver.

Shi Ohn doesn’t see the guy who comes up behind her and clubs her across the head with a pipe. She falls to the floor and all we hear is her breathing. There’s a shot of Hyung Joon, which makes me think that this is when her seeing ghosts started, because he’s dead, and all we hear is Shi Ohn panting. A flash of them earlier with him kissing her, then smiling as he walked away. Seems awfully light for being about to go try to bust some bad people. With Shi Ohn motionless on the floor, breathing, the scene fades to black.

Who-Are-You_01-011  Who-Are-You_01-011a  Who-Are-You_01-012

And starts again 6 years later. A new nurse is being introduced to her duties on the ward. Shi Ohn’s been ‘brain dead’ for 6 years. Later, it’s dark and the newbie nurse comes back. She yawns and, after muttering about needing her sleep, speeds up Shi Ohn’s IV drip. Then she drops some scissors under the bed. When she goes down reaching for them, Shi Ohn hands them to her. She looks up and Shi Ohn’s really creepy face is staring back at her.

The doctors are amazed that she just woke up and can find no medical explanation for it.

Now that she’s awake, she gets grilled by two detectives about why she was on the freighter. They think it’s suspicious that she was found so near a dead cop’s body. This is what I don’t understand. Why are they questioning her like she’s a suspect? She was attacked *while on the job* and just woke up from a 6-year coma. How is that suspicious? Oh, I see that you should be dead, but that’s just a sign that you were part of the smuggling ring. You might have been the one who shot Hyung Joon, which is how you ended up in that condition, even though you were carrying no gun and no blunt object was found near you that might have been used by him to club you before you lost consciousness. Yes, this all makes sense, so just confess!

Who-Are-You_01-014  Who-Are-You_01-015  Who-Are-You_01-016

Shi Ohn has no memory of that day (common for head trauma cases). They show her Hyung Joon’s picture and she has no idea who he is. The detectives start again, but Shi Ohn gets up and addresses the people standing behind the two-way mirror. She tells them that she’s also like to know what happened, to the point she feels like she’s going crazy. She asks them to throw away their hope that she’ll remember. We get a shot of Choi Moon Shik (Kim Chang Wan) in the group she’s addressing, considering her words. It’s obvious to me that he knows her. Is he considering her condition so that he can help her get her job back?

Three months later. Shi Ohn’s visiting the psychiatrist the hospital assigned, Dr. Park Hyung Jin (Jang Hyun Sung). He has lots of commendations and this really weird quote from an article about him framed on his wall: “Traces of injury are only words stuck to scars...” I don’t know if it’s the translation, but what? He’s checking up on her progress and assures her that her confusion and uneasiness around people is normal. There’s also what appears to be a resident taking notes sitting behind her.

Who-Are-You_01-017  Who-Are-You_01-019

The resident starts clicking his pen. The noise makes Shi Ohn uncomfortable but she tries to ignore it. But eventually she and Dr. Park look in the resident’s direction and he stops. She still has no memory of the day of her attack. She mentions that she can see people who look like people but aren’t people. They stare blankly and are silent and it seems like only she can see them. Dr. Park asks if there are any in his office at the moment. Nope. She only sees Dr. Park and the resident.

Who-Are-You_01-020  Who-Are-You_01-021  Who-Are-You_01-022

With that, the resident starts clicking his pen faster and faster as he snickers in Shi Ohn’s direction. Finally, she’s had enough and stands up to address him. He just smugly looks at her. Then he turns and walks toward the window, revealing a huge hole in the back of his head, one a person *couldn’t* like through. So gross. This is why I could never be a doctor. She realizes that he’s a ghost. He opens the window, stops clicking the pen, smirks at her and then falls backward out of the window. Shi Ohn jumps and horrified, goes and looks out the window. There’s no body. It definitely was a ghost. How’s she going to be declared sane after she explains that one?

Who-Are-You_01-025  Who-Are-You_01-027

Who-Are-You_01-028  Who-Are-You_01-029

Police Headquarters. We meet our hero, as Cha Gun Woo (Taecyeon), who is acting out a conversation in the mirror with his new supervisor. Apparently, he’s impressive, that the supervisor is going to get him out of working in the Lost and Found Division. As I watch Gun Woo carry on this conversation, it strikes me how different he is from most of the heroes I’ve watched lately. He’s not reserved and he’s *really* expressive.

Gun Woo’s observed by Seung Ha, the junior officer of the office who is mopping the floor. Interesting that a cleaning staff doesn’t do that. Gun Woo yells at him to get back to work and complains to himself about the laziness of the other officers in the division. He starts to go back to his conversation when Shi Ohn enters. She’s dressed in a running outfit. He asks her if she’s come for lost and found. She replies no. She walks over to her new desk and starts unloading the contents of her satchel.

Who-Are-You_01-032  Who-Are-You_01-033

Gun Woo patronizingly asks Shi Ohn what she’s doing. She tells him he should have heard by now and he decides she’s the crazy lady who litters all over the front of the station. She pretty much ignores him. He tells Seung Ha to throw her out and then complains to himself about the division he got assigned to and the crazies he has to deal with. Seung Ha goes to grab her bag and notices something on it which stops him. Shi Ohn just continues to unload her stuff.

Gun Woo, without turning around, asks Seung Ha what’s taking so long. Seung Ha tells him he should look at something. It’s her police badge. And then he sees her name plate: Inspector Yang Shi Ohn. It’s *his new boss.* He can only stare at her with his mouth hanging open. Finished unpacking, she grabs some clothes and tells him to move out of the way. As he scrambles backward. She asks where the locker room is. Then she orders him to get the storage area ready for inspection. When Gun Woo just stares at her, wide-eyed, she asks him for his answer. He answers in the affirmative and she leaves.

Thirty minutes later, Shi Ohn is in uniform and she and Gun Woo are down in the storage area. He points out where everything is. I don’t like how he’s talking to her, telling her ‘let’s go’ and ‘take a good look.’ How is that respectful to your superior? It really feels like that dominant-male-submissive female is playing out even though she’s the boss. He clears his throat, pulls out his phone and walks upstairs. Does not excuse himself. Would he do that with his new boss if it were a man? I don’t think so, based on how much he was sucking up to ‘him’ in his fantasy discussion.

Who-Are-You_01-038  Who-Are-You_01-039  Who-Are-You_01-040

Gun Woo’s gone to the top of the steps to complain to his sunbaenim about not being warned about being stuck with the crazy coma cop. Try saying that fast 3 times. Who’s his sunbaenim? The guy who was listening through the two-way glass. Moon Shik tells him to calm down. Shi Ohn yells for him, so he has to get off the phone before whining some more.

The Lost and Found Division is where items from around the country are sent for storage. Policy is to keep them for 1 year 6 months 14 days. As she asks for what happens next, she opens a storage drawer and out rolls the ghost’s clicky pen. As she stares at it, Gun Woo tells her they go up for auction, like she’s stupid. She gives him a glare and shuts the drawer. He mutters to himself about how she doesn’t know anything. Again, why is it okay that he’s being this disrespectful and why is she letting him get away with it?

Who-Are-You_01-044  Who-Are-You_01-046  Who-Are-You_01-047

Shi Ohn pulls out some school uniform gym clothes with the name tag, Dan Oh Reum. Gun Woo wandered away and with back to her is complaining to himself about her being *two-levels* his senior. He even grabs the back of his neck, a classic k-drama move. He’s very demonstrative as he ‘silently’ complains. Shi Ohn smiles to herself and then walks over to him. He doesn’t realize it, so he turns around and she’s really in his personal space. She even takes a step closer so that he’s really uncomfortable. Her face says that she’s not. She tells him they need to talk. So is she *finally* going to say something?

Okay, I might be complaining about this, but this doesn’t mean that I don’t like Gun Woo, because I do. I like the fact that he’s very expressive and transparent in what he’s thinking. And it’s not just it flickering across his face; his whole body gets into the act. He’s cocky, but he’s not arrogant, which makes me like him.

As they leave the storage area, the camera focuses back in on that uniform with the name badge of Dan Oh Reum.

Who-Are-You_01-049  Who-Are-You_01-052  Who-Are-You_01-053

So they’re not just talking upstairs. Shi Ohn’s taken Gun Woo out for meat and Soju. She quickly addresses the issue of him not liking her and tells him she understands his disappointment at not getting a male boss that would be his mentor. Instead, he got the crazy coma lady. He asks if he can speak honestly and she gives permission, at which point he tells her doesn’t like the situation at all. But it’s more he has a problem with her seniority, which she didn’t get by years of service, but because she graduated from the police academy. So maybe it’s not so much how I was taking it, but more because he feels like he’s entitled to *be* her superior. He does say that, of course, he wouldn’t be crazy to have problems with having a woman azs his supervisor. But it seems more like it’s related to a loss of respect from other officers than him thinking that a woman wasn’t competent. Shi Ohn just smiles and takes a drink. I bet she’s has to deal with this patriarchal crap her whole career.

Who-Are-You_01-054  Who-Are-You_01-055  Who-Are-You_01-056

Shi Ohn tells Gun Woo she understands, which surprises him. And then she shares an old saying: If you follow, then your destiny will guide you. But if don’t, your destiny will force you. I wonder how she views what’s happened to her? She tells him to think about how he’s going to handle his destiny and then leaves.

Shi Ohn goes back to the precinct and washes her hands in the bathroom. The lights flicker on and off and then she hears someone gasping for breath. When she finally reaches the stall where the gasping was coming from, she opens the stall door and no one’s there. She’s relieved, since the wouldn’t answer when she tried talking to them. The lights go out and out of her sight, someone exits a stall. She looks around but no one’s there. When she turns to leave, there’s the ghost. It’s a teenage girl in a school uniform, with a huge cut on her forehead.

Who-Are-You_01-058  Who-Are-You_01-061

As Shi Ohn gasps and tells the girl not to come nearer, the ghost approaches and then grabs Shi Ohn by the arms. She says nothing. Shi Ohn screams and pain and red shoot up her arm. Shi Ohn screams for the ghost to let her go and then the lights flicker back on. Gun Woo rushes into the bathroom, asking what happened. She’s completely freaked out.

Hearing Shi Ohn say there was a girl soaked in blood, Gun Woo pulls out a gun he had tucked in the back of his pants and goes to investigate. He finds nothing. She mutters about the girl. He claps his hands in front of her face and tells her to get her head straight, since she’s crazy and all. Then he tells her he’ll take her across the street for some alcohol. He leaves her in the bathroom, shaking his head as he goes.

Who-Are-You_01-063  Who-Are-You_01-066  Who-Are-You_01-067

Gun Woo is telling Moon Shik that Shi Ohn is totally insane. He’s trying to get Gun Woo to be understanding and patient, since she just woke up from a coma. Gun Woo wants to know why she just didn’t stay home until she was all better; why does he have to be plagued with her? Moon Shik just laughs at him. He stops laughing when Gun Woo mentions having to pull out his gun. Apparently, part of the reason Gun Woo isn’t presently a detective is that he caused some trouble with one. I notice that he talks to Moon Shik pretty much like he talks to Shi Ohn (almost, but there’s more respect with Moon Shik, so maybe his insubordination is because *she* doesn’t have his respect, not because she’s a woman, but because of being crazy and lower in her years of service).

Who-Are-You_01-074  Who-Are-You_01-071  Who-Are-You_01-072

Shi Ohn comes in and it’s obvious she heard the whole conversation. She tells Gun Woo to return the gun, asking for it by holding out her hand. He asks her, “Why are you like this?” and gives her five. She repeats his question, with the tone of ‘excuse me?’ Gun Woo looks over at Moon Shik and Moon Shik’s face asks ‘what are you doing?’ Gun Woo is surprised that Moon Shik has a problem with his attitude. She holds out her hand again. Groaning, he pulls it out and tells her to give it to her niece and looks away, disgusted at having to give it up. It’s a lighter. I love how Gun Woo has no filter on his mouth, at least when it comes to these two. I’m guessing, though, that he doesn’t have it period, because he got shunted to the Lost and Found Division after a screw-up.

Who-Are-You_01-077  Who-Are-You_01-079

Moon Shik stifles a laugh and Gun Woo whines about how having it’s a good idea, in case he meets a criminal. Not that the criminal would have a real gun or anything. Oh, wait, they don’t. They smuggle drugs and bullion but don’t carry guns. Except for the boss. Besides, it’s the symbol of an A-level detective. Gun Woo’s voice trails off but his lips keep moving. Moon Shik leans over and introduces himself; he’s a Detective Team Leader. Maybe Gun Woo’s old boss? He tells her that Gun Woo might come across as weird but he’s a capable detective.

I’m noticing her haircut. It’s an asymmetrical bob. I don’t like it. The asymmetrical bob. It’s uneven. And the part that’s longer, she doesn’t tuck behind her ear.

It’s time to auction off stuff that wasn’t claimed or the owner located. While Gun Woo runs to projector, Shi Ohn introduces each item. The gym suit comes up and Shi Ohn remembers that the ghost girl was wearing a nametag with Dan Oh Reum on it. She stops describing the item and looks out into the crowd where Oh Reum’s ghost has appeared. Shi Ohn freaks out until Gun Woo snaps her out of it. It gives him an opportunity to shake his head again.

Who-Are-You_01-086  Who-Are-You_01-087  Who-Are-You_01-089

Shi Ohn takes the bus home and Oh Reum follows her home. She runs, terrified, and gets inside her house, flipping on the lights. She grabs a bottle of pills the doctor prescribed. She drops them and as she’s picking them up, she notices Oh Reum’s shoes. Oh Reum’s eyes are pleading now. But she says nothing. Shi Ohn runs into the bathroom and slams the door. Oh Reum writes, ‘Help me,’ on the fogged-up mirror.Smart girl.

The next day, Gun Woo overseeing incinerating the items that didn’t get burned, complaining about having to do that, too. Seung Ha brings out a batch and Gun Woo passes off the job. One of the first bins holds Oh Reum’s outfit.

Shi Ohn looks up Oh Reum’s death and it was ruled that she jumped from the roof as a suicide.

Who-Are-You_01-092  Who-Are-You_01-096  Who-Are-You_01-097

Gun Woo about to burn the outfit when Shi Ohn comes running up telling him to stop. At first he’s surprised and then he’s irritated. She tells him it has an owner and he looks around, asking “Where?” He’s clearly making fun of her. She tells him that the owner’s going to come for it. He complains and then holds it out to her, but not far enough so that she can reach it.Heh. So funny watching her scramble like a squirrel after a nut.

Back in the L&F Division, Shi Ohn tells Gun Woo to start obeying her orders without questioning her. He acts like she’s crazy. She wants him to investigate Oh Reum’s background, school life, etc. He objects, asking why he has to. He’s not very good at following orders. She reminds him that if he wants to return to the Special Forces unit, *she’s* going to need to give him good reviews.

Next thing we see is him at Oh Reum’s school. He’s talking to himself about holding it in and how she’s making him pitiful. But not because he wants a good review, of course.

Who-Are-You_01-101  Who-Are-You_01-103  Who-Are-You_01-105

Shi Ohn has gone to speak with Oh Reum’s mother. Her mother isn’t happy that she’s there, since the subject is painful. It hurt her so much that her mute daughter just left a note and then took her life. So Oh Reum can’t talk. The mom goes to compose herself with the excuse of making tea. While she’s gone, Oh Reum appears, playing the piano. Then Oh Reum gets up and goes into a room where her art work is being stored. She was a very talented artist.

Shi Ohn takes a picture of one of the tags and seeks out the art school that it’s from, Picasso Art Academy. Oh Reum appears on the roof where she fell. Shi Ohn rushes inside to find her and follows her upstairs. It’s obvious, to me, that the ghost is leading her somewhere, because at one point Oh Reum stops and waits for Shi Ohn to catch up. Shi Ohn’s so intent of following Oh Reum that she doesn’t see the boy that she crashes into, causing him to drop the trash basket he was carrying. She apologizes. He just frowns and begins picking up the trash.

Who-Are-You_01-108  Who-Are-You_01-110  Who-Are-You_01-111

Gun Woo calls and says that he didn’t find anything out of the ordinary. Oh Reum did have a boyfriend: Bae Kyung Min. Shi Ohn repeats the name and the boy looks in her direction. It’s him. Clever Oh Reum. Shi Ohn interviews Kyung Min and he denies any involvement with Oh Reum. He says it would be embarrassing. When Shi Ohn asks if Oh Reum *really* committed suicide, Kyung Min says that thinking about her makes him shiver with disgust. He tells Shi Ohn to not come back and leaves.

Gun Woo arrives at the school, with Shi Ohn outside. He complains about the heat and having to look into this case. As they are talking, there’s a commotion from the crowd. Looking up, they see Kyung Min standing on the roof, in the spot Oh Reum jumped from. Shi Ohn hurries inside with Gun Woo behind her.

Who-Are-You_01-119  Who-Are-You_01-120

Kyung Min was lying about his relationship with Oh Reum. He’s clutching a Hello Kitty pin and is close to jumping with Shi Ohn and Gun Woo arrive at the rooftop. Shi Ohn tries to talk him down but Gun Woo keeps telling him to jump. We see that he’s got his handcuffs out and has one cuff around his wrist. Suddenly, Kyung Min jumps, but Gun Woo dives after him. He’s able to catch him and slap the other cuff around his wrist.

Who-Are-You_01-121  Who-Are-You_01-123  Who-Are-You_01-127

Shi Ohn has covered her eyes and when she finally decides to look, she finds Gun Woo is hanging off the roof, holding on with one arm. Shi Ohn runs over to help him, but she’s freaking out so she’s not really thinking very straight. Kyung Min decides to faint, making it complete dead weight on Gun Woo’s arm. But they’re able to pull Kyung Min up and back onto the roof.

Next scene, we’re at the hospital. Kyung Min is in a bed, sleeping, in temporary shock, and Gun Woo is telling Shi Ohn that’s he’s fine, the macho man that he is. Both of them think that Kyung Min is hiding a secret and it’s further evidence that Oh Reum *didn’t* commit suicide. Gun Woo thinks that the only way that they’ll be able to figure it out is by using a profiler. He asks Shi Ohn if she has anyone she can talk to, and Shi Ohn does. Her psychiatrist works at the very same hospital. She leaves to go consult with him. Not that he would be busy with rounds or patients or anything, seeing as she doesn’t have an appointment.

Who-Are-You_01-132  Who-Are-You_01-133

But Dr. Park is nice enough to see Shi Ohn and discuss things over a cup of coffee. But he needs more information to make an accurate diagnosis, so he asks for her to explain everything in detail from the beginning.

Kyung Min decides to wake up while Shi Ohn is gone. Gun Woo tells him to rest and gives him back the Hello Kitty pin he dropped. It miraculously has no damage whatsoever even though it dropped from about 3 stories up. I guess Hello Kitty stuff is built to last. Kyung Min is pretty unresponsive until Gun Woo decides to go get him something to eat. Then we get the story.

Who-Are-You_01-140  Who-Are-You_01-144  Who-Are-You_01-146

Kyung Min was in love with Oh Reum. They met in art class. He was supposed to be drawing a bust, but instead he drew her, and then got busted by his teacher. Instead of being repulsed or embarrassed, Oh Reum smiled at him. He really liked her and fortunately, she liked him. But it was hard for her to date someone “normal.” So Kyung Min suggested she go to see a therapist he’d known for a long time. But then Oh Reum changed and started pulling away from him. Kyung Min decided to go talk to the therapist about things and when he got to his office, he discovered that the man was molesting Oh Reum.

Dr. Park agrees that Kyung Min must be hiding something, since it’s been a year since Oh Reum died.

Gun Woo wants to know why Kyung Min didn’t go to the police. If he had, Oh Reum wouldn’t have ended up like she did.

Dr. Park says that it’s more correct to say that instead of he won’t tell you, it’s he *can’t* tell you. Someone very close to him and powerful is threatening him to keep him quiet.

Who-Are-You_01-152  Who-Are-You_01-154

Kyung Min says that the therapist is HIS UNCLE. How about that? What a scum bucket. Not Kyung Min but his uncle. That’s the worst kind of violation, molesting a *patient.* At this point in the story, I started to get a bad feeling about where this was going… Gun Woo asks the man’s name.

Gun Woo calls Shi Ohn right after getting the name, but she doesn’t answer the phone. Dr. Park offers her some more coffee. He’s finding all of this very interesting and it’s no bother that it’s so late in the evening. Gun Woo sends her a text, because it’s important. Dr. Park’s fixing the coffee, but he’s paused to see what happens with the text. This is where my bad feeling got worse. Oh, crappers.

Who-Are-You_01-155  Who-Are-You_01-156  Who-Are-You_01-158

Gun Woo’s text reads: “The culprit is the psychiatrist. The name is Park Hyung Jin. Which just so happens to be the nice doctor we’re visiting with right now. They show you his name plate in case you forgot or didn’t get the connection. What a weasel. He’s loving this whole thing. Shi Ohn, of course, is not very good at hiding her reaction. Dr. Park stops making coffee. He goes over and locks the door. Shi Ohn doesn’t try to cover at all which is what I would have done, doing something like complain about Gun Woo being annoying and not very subordinate, etc., but she doesn’t. AND SHE DOESN’T TEXT HIM BACK TO SAY HELP. Or that she’s in Park Hyung Jin’s office.

Who-Are-You_01-160  Who-Are-You_01-161

Shi Ohn asks Dr. Park why he locked the door and he answers, “Why do you think?” End of episode.

Thoughts

I was definitely interested to see what was going to happen after this episode. It’s not so emotionally engaging as Master’s Sun, which I mention because it’s also airing and I’m watching that too, but it is enjoyable.

I really like Taecyeon’s character, or at least how Taecyeon is playing him. He’s very expressive and straight-forward. All those times where he animatedly talks, really make me like him. On my second view of this episode, his insubordination didn’t bother me nearly as much, partially because I realized that it’s not because of a patriarchal mindset, but more because he doesn’t view her as his superior. When he was practicing in front of the mirror, it was clear that he thought he was going to get someone who was going to groom him for his return to his old unit. But instead he got the chick who was brain dead for 6 years.

Who-Are-You_01-034  Who-Are-You_01-037  Who-Are-You_01-131

I really like Gun Woo’s relationship with Moon Shik. He treats Moon Shik pretty much the same way as Shi Ohn, which is why I just think this a character pattern for Gun Woo rather than it being personally directed to Shi Ohn. I’m wondering if Moon Shik is Shi Ohn’s old boss. She doesn’t seem to remember anything about her past life as a cop and he seems to take an interest in her progress and welfare. Why she can’t look up her file to find that stuff out, I don’t know.

It’s clear that Moon Shik is a mentor for Gun Woo. It almost seems like he’s Gun Woo’s old supervisor, too, from the way that they talk. I wonder what this gun incident that Moon Shik referred to was. What would be so bad that it would get a guy transferred to the boonies?

Who-Are-You_01-098  Who-Are-You_01-062  Who-Are-You_01-094

I don’t know how I feel about Shi Ohn and I don’t think the writers quite know how to handle her character either. What I mean is, at times she is really tough and strong and other times she’s really weak. She’s gruff with Gun Woo one minute and then just basically lets him walk all over her the next. She’s his boss, but it’s almost like he’s her boss or at least her partner. Which is weird. I mean, even the end of the episode. Okay, so you lost your memory surrounding what happened. Did you lose all your training too? Why did she just sit there and quake with fear instead of trying to play things off? It’s little things like this that makes me feel like the writers want to write her as strong, but they can’t shake a cultural predisposition to women being timid and needing a man to save them.

Gun Woo’s little stunt on the roof was pretty cool. Again, why didn’t she get a clue? It was almost like she was helpless from the minute she stepped out onto the roof, rather than being a detective who was so capable that she worked undercover. That type of thing takes real confidence. But there she was pleading with Kyung Min instead of trying to talk him down. I am really surprised that Gun Woo was able to slap those cuffs on Kyung Min but him diving off the roof after the boy really earns my respect.

But seriously, how the heck did the Hello Kitty pin not suffer damage? Let alone how did Gun Woo know to look for it and then find it, since the kid dropped it when he was dangling by a handcuff? I’m just saying. Come on, director. Stuff like that pulls me out of my suspension of disbelief.

So the idea of ghosts is different in this series. At this point, it’s unclear whether all ghost are mute or if it was just Oh Reum. But I would really like to see Shi Ohn not quaking in fear every time a ghost pops up. Are they all going to be able to physically impact Shi Ohn? They do seem to be tied to an object, rather than just wandering with unfinished business. Oh Reum and her gym clothes. The resident and his clicky pen.

I am curious about the first ghost with the clicking pen. What’s his story? Why was he intentionally tormenting her? Did it have something to do with the creepy Dr. Park? His death? And was his falling out of the window a signal about what happened to Oh Reum, that Dr. Park was responsible? That would be interesting, if they are planning on going this direction. His pen is in the lost and found, which, I mean, really? You need to send a *pen* to the *national* lost and found division? Really?

I can see the underpinnings of the romance already, at least in that, despite how much he complains, Gun Woo finds Shi Ohn attractive. For example, when she got up in his face in the L&F storage area, he was really uncomfortable while it didn't bother her in the slightest. If there wasn't any attraction there, he probably wouldn't have been so uncomfortable. Plus, he keeps 'putting up with' her weirdness, even though he complains about it, and 'makes himself pitiful' for this woman.

So, let’s go on to Episode Two. Hopefully, Shi Ohn will use her police training and break Dr. Park’s nose. You’re a cop, for Pete’s Sake!

Just had to add this image. The episode I was watching included 2 sets of Korean commercials. This one was particularly corny.
