The radio announces that there is a violent disturbance on Gangnam Road. Dispatch immediately. Pan Suk replies that they’re on their way. Then he tells everyone to take out their handcuffs. The group proceeds to start waving the handcuffs out the window to get cars to move out of the way. I wonder if that would work in America? Everyone except Dae Goo think it’s pretty cool how they can get the cars to move out of the way. I think it’s pretty cool that people respect the police enough to do that.
We see our criminals. They’re sitting in the middle of the road, facing each other, having a staring contest. And they’re *sitting* in chairs, blocking traffic. When they see the van coming, they jump in their car and zoom off. High flying car. Gook gets kicked out. I wonder where they were all going together before all this happened. Soju bottle and driving on the wrong side of the road. Ramming the car. Chase on foot. Holding Gook at knife point. Dae Goo points the gun and the others tell him to lower it.
This time, we see what happens: Dae Goo does but then pulls out his taser and shoots Gook, which also gets the criminal, since they were touching, so they both fall to the ground, twitching.
[Episode 2. The Reason We're Not Detectives.]
Police Station. Pan Suk enters first, with the group, and the criminals, following behind. The police station looks quite busy with the pan back. We’ve got people who speak English, two groups of teen girls who have been in a fight with each other over which Oppa is better. Of all the dumb things to fight about… Like your ‘Oppa’ cares, about you or you defending his honor. He doesn’t even know you exist… Pan Suk sits at his desk and rubs the back of his neck.
Gook and Tae Il are walking together and the girls spot them. They start clamoring about how good looking Oppa is! Gook think they mean him, but it’s Tae Il that they want and are trying to take pictures of. Gook grumbles that they have bad taste in men and Tae Il strikes a pose for the girls. And the man can model. Dae Goo, Soo Sun and Pan Suk all roll their eyes. Soo Sun stands up and starts yelling at them. They start taking pictures of her, and she obliges with a few poses for them. And we’re supposed to believe that a 70-200 lens is taking clear, in focus shots of her, when she’s less that 10 feet away from the lens. As a professional photographer, I can say with confidence,*it doesn’t.* Pan Suk pulls out a neck pillow, groans and puts it around his neck.
One of the girls is obnoxiously staring at Dae Goo. When he turns around to look at her, she screams about his *eyes* and then the girls start screaming over him and taking pictures. He does *not* oblige them by posing. Other cops get in on the action, taking off their jacket to show their muscles, flashing their abs. Tae Il poses with his gun and Gook just glares.
Pan Suk is really irritated so he goes to yell at Captain Cha. He wants to replace at least 2 of them with cops with at least 2 or 3 years experience. Cha wants to know why Pan Suk is bugging him about it when the Chief's office is the last one down the hallway on the right. Pan Suk grumbles and Cha dresses him down for being disrespectful. Pan Suk is ticked because the newbies can't tell the difference between crap and bean paste. And investigation is all about experience in the field! Cha passes the buck again. Pan Suk knows that complaining to the Chief isn’t going to get him anywhere, so he nods and nicely kicks Cha’s trashcan, with a kick worthy of a football player. He leaves the office and Cha grumbles about what a rude jerk Pan Suk is.
The teen girls are gone. Eung Do timidly informs Pan Suk that they were dispatched while he was in talking to Cha. Eung Do asks if Pan Suk has any other words for the four newbies. Pan Suk stands and stoically declares that he is the legend Seo Pan Suk. He’s sure they’ve heard of him and he doesn't just take anyone under my wing. Dae Goo just stares ahead, like he’s sitting through a boring lecture. Pan Suk tells them all to hurry up and quit. He particularly warns Soo Sun and Gook. He asks them, for the safety of Gangnam citizens and for his mental health – he emphasizes this by placing his hand on his chest – they should hurry up and quit.
Sa Kyung enters the precinct and Pan Suk goes over to talk to her. Now I’m wondering if their baggage is related to Dae Goo’s disappearance, since she’s the head of the Missing Person’s Unit. She just looks at him. I can’t tell if she’s hurt or pissed, or maybe it’s both. He uncomfortably declares that she’s there and he was going to go say hello. She should have called him and let him know she was back and he would have gone to the airport... Dang! She slaps him hard. The slap is so loud that the entire precinct heard it and stops what they’re doing to look. He tries to smile, declaring that she’s as strong as always. She chuckles, not believing his reaction.
Sa Kyung asks how Pan Suk is. He says that he’s fine. She says that he shouldn’t be and that she prayed he would die. Dang! What happened between them?!! She asks him if he even knows why she slapped you? He nods and says that of course he knows; he’s not a complete son of a bitch. He sighs, not meeting her eyes, and says that that night... it just happened. She slaps him again and tells him he should have said he forgot. Dae Goo is actually a little unnerved by it and Soo Sun is absolutely horrified.
Sa Kyung doesn’t stop glaring at Pan Suk as she yells for Detective Kim to come to the Missing Persons office in ten minutes. So does this mean he cheated on her? Kim quickly brings her the file she’s asking for and she walks out of the precinct. Pan Suk just stands there, sadly looking down. Then he collects himself, looks back at his team, knows they saw, and walks away. Aw. Poor Pan Suk. Gook tries to find out what’s going on from Eung Do, but he just tells them that they’ll find out in time. Then he partners them up: Dae Goo and Soo Sun together and Gook and Tae Il together. He tells them that partners are one body, so they should trust and care for one another. Tae Il and Gook are happy with the pairing but Dae Goo is cold when Soo Sun offers to shake. Eung Do asks for volunteers. All of them except Dae Goo raise their hands, with Gook raising both of his. Dae Goo realizes and partially raises his hand.
The office of Congressman Yoo Moon Bae. My prediction: he's the bad guy, the guy who ordered the hit on Ji Yong and his Mom. He’s reading the news on his computer and mutters that Chief Kang keeps creating events. We see him and it’s Tan and Won’s Dad from ‘The Heirs.’ Now I really think he’s going to be a bad guy. Chief Kang and Captain Cha arrive, and Yoo knows Cha. Kang slightly rolls her eyes and frowns as Cha calls Yoo ‘Chief’ but then corrects himself. So this guy was the old Chief. He has to be crooked! Too many coincidences… Yoo says that he doesn’t mind and Wang sort of smiles at him. Her face reads that she wished she could have exposed him, too.
Yoo asks them to sit. He wants to talk about Wang hiring the rookies. She starts to explain it when Yoo interrupts her and says that all she has to do is succeed. And Wang looks like it’s a knife to the heart. So there’s going to be opposition. Wow, they’re doing a great job of not using the exposition fairy but just setting things up… Yoo declares that the new endeavor must succeed. Failure will be because of useless arrogance. Not a jab at Kang at all. And he looks so innocent when he says it. Wang smiles and agrees. Probably cursing him under her breath. He admonishes them to ensure the safety of the civilians. He can't emphasize enough that having rookies must not compromise public security. It should never happen. Cha emphatically takes this to heart and Wang agrees. I can only imagine her wanting to beat the man.
Police Station. Lots of purses. Gook looks to be unpacking them. Soo Sun is processing the criminals they caught earlier. She asks Thug#1 why he was sitting in a chair in the middle of the road. He declares that it was a test of will. To see who can last the longest. Soo Sun can’t believe that answer. Gook walks over and snarks, putting the box cutter on the desk. Thug#1 sees the box cutter.
Soo Sun ties up Thug#1. Eung Do inspects the ropes and compliments her and then tells her and Dae Goo to put him in the holding cell. Soo Sun runs off to the bathroom and Thug#1’s gotten a hold of the box cutter.
Dae Goo and Soo Sun are escorting Thug#1 to holding, Soo Sun is cheerfully commenting on how rundown the building is. Dae Goo doesn’t say anything. She asks him why he’s always so quiet. Then she asks him if they’ve met before because he looks familiar. He answers that they never have, but she thinks they have. Thug#1 is now using the box cutter to cut the ropes that are around his wrists.
They start up the stairs and Thug#1 grabs Dae Goo and pulls backward, throwing him on Soo Sun. They tumble down the stairs, with Dae Goo landing on top of Soo Sun. Thug#1 runs up the stairs. But then he runs back down them. Dae Goo takes off after him. Soo Sun grabs her slipper and follows. Thug#1 gets out of the building and is able to get into one of the police cars. But, Thug#1 gets into an accident… with Pan Suk in the other car. Another detective yells at Pan Suk about the accident. Pan Suk glares at Soo Sun and Dae Goo.
Inside, Pan Suk is yelling at the 4. He slaps the box cutter on the desk and yells at Soo Sun for leaving it out. As he lectures her for her incompetence, Gook doesn’t say anything about it being *his* fault. Then he yells at her for wearing slippers rather than the proper shoes. Didn’t she learn anything at the police academy? She says that she did learn those things, so he yells at her for not going by what she was taught. She apologizes for the shoes, but says that she didn’t leave the box cutter on the desk. Pan Suk yells at her for making excuses.
Pan Suk turns to Dae Goo and asks him why he’s in silent meditation. Did he do nothing wrong? He’s the one who let the suspect escape so why isn’t he saying anything? Dae Goo replies that its’ not all my fault. Pan Suk can’t believe he just said that. Dae Goo continues that his mistake is that he overestimated an inept partner without knowing her better. Way to win over your partner. She’s not happy. Dae Goo adds that Pan Suk’s also responsible since he mismanaged inexperienced rookies. Pan Suk laughs in disbelief. He asks where this psycho came from. Jaw clench from Dae Goo. Where did such an asshole come from?
Pan Suk’s about to physically lay into Dae Goo when Eung Do pulls him off and pushes him away. Cha comes in and starts yelling. He kicks the trashcan this time. He calls Pan Suk a stupid idiot and declares that Pan Suk was always so arrogant. Pan Suk can do nothing but apologize. Cha wants him to resign immediately. Someone has to take responsibility. Eung Do tries to play peacemaker.
Breakroom. Soo Sun is pissed that Dae Goo threw her under the bus. Gook and Tae Il are there to try and make her feel better.
Pan Suk is called in to speak with the Chief. She’s pleased to see him. She tells him that Captain Cha and she have agreed not to make matters worse over what happened today so he should lead the rookies well. She tells him that she wouldn’t have considered bringing in four rookies if it weren't for him. Pan Suk plaintively asks why it has to be the detective team to take on the new rookies. Wang smiles and says that she’s aware of his objections. She comes out from behind her desk and they sit in the meeting chairs. He tells her he thinks her experiment is dangerous. Then he adds that today might have become a second Lee Dae Young incident, with 25,000 detectives across the nation being on emergency alert, not going home or eating for sixteen days. I tried to find out if he’s referencing something that really happened, but was unsuccessful. He references a coupe of other incidents that all occurred because of mistakes from inexperience that resulted in civilian or police deaths, adding that rookies can make mistakes but not as detectives. Wang just looks at him.
Pan Suk says that we can't bring the dead back to life. Chief Wang softly smiles, looking a little sad, and says that even he was a rookie once. Painful blinking from Pan Suk. She says that that pain created the Seo Pan Suk today. Pan Suk just blinks and then looks down. She looks at him with compassion. He tells her that she’s insulting him today.
Pan Suk leaves Chief Wang’s office. Once he closes the door, he stops and stares blankly ahead, lost in his own thoughts. He looks like he wants to cry. He shakes his head and walks down the hall.
Shady Korean Neighborhood. Dae Goo is walking down a back alley. He pulls out a black ball cap and puts it on. Because wearing a hat makes you invisible. It is effective in hiding his face, though, from the security camera of the store he just entered. He announces that he wants to create a duplicate phone, setting it down on the counter.
Later, he enters someplace else, again wearing the cap so that it hides his face from the security camera in the ceiling. He sneaks into an apartment, taking off the cap. He starts looking around using a flashlight for light. Whose place is this? He installs a camera in the kitchen light fixture, with a view of the living room.
At the precinct, Soo Sun is in Eung Do’s desk, pulling out the box cutter. She drops it into an evidence bag. She takes it over to the guy at the Fingerprint lab and launches into a tirade about being wronged and social justice. He laughs and tells her he’ll do it. She profusely thanks him. He laughs again.
Dae Goo returns to the precinct and puts Pan Suk’s phone back. Soo Sun spots him (but not what he’s doing) and asks why he’s still at the station. She asks him if he’s still mad. He replies that it was partly his fault for overestimating his bird brain partner. Butt head. He lectures her for not noticing that the Thug was holding the box cutter when she was tying up his hands. She tells him that he’s out of line. He takes a step closer to her and criticizes her reason for being there: because it has the highest pay. Even if the hourly pay seems higher since there is a lot of overtime and off-duty works he’ll lose sleep and end up spending more than she earns. And, finally she’s a bird brain. ithout the brain capacity for this work. He tells her she should resign immediately. Is he intentionally being extra mean since she started to recognize him? I bet part of the reason she became a detective is because of what happened with him, too. He walks off with her sputtering in disbelief. She tells herself to calm down; she messed up so she'll take it today. And I like her.
Dae Goo goes back to the dorm where he’ll be living. There’s a large manila envelope waiting for him.
The apartment. Gook is unpacking. No way. Dae Goo is rooming with Gook. Gook is equally surprised. Gook declares that he has goosebumps! He yells for Tae Il. So the 3 of them are rooming together? Watch Soo Sun be their roommate, too. Tae Il and Gook are nice. Dae Goo doesn’t say anything. He ends up rooming with Gook. Gook’s all excited. Dae Goo tells Gook not to talk to him. Gook offers to burn an aromatherapy candle to help with Dae Goo's mood. Dae Goo tells him not to stink up the room. Gook takes his surliness in stride. As Gook goes to hang up a wall clock, Dae Goo orders Gook not to make noise. Gook goes along, saying they can use their cell phone clocks. Gook goes to climb on the bed and Dae Goo orders him not to share beds. Gook’s starting to get irritated. Dae Goo orders him not to shine the light. Gook snaps that Dae Goo can stop it with all the orders.
Tae Il’s in his room, drinking wine and looking (sadly?) at a picture of a smiling man about Tae Il’s age, wearing a backpack and giving the thumbs up signal. I think this will end up being his brother, the reason he became a cop, rather than a boyfriend… Gook enters with some of his stuff, including his blankets. He asks if he can share the room. Tae Il is fine with it, but asks why Gook’s now there. Gook declare that he’s a sensitive blood type A and can't be with such a prickly guy. Dae Goo’s probably blood type B. Then Gook stops and asks Tae Il what *his* blood type is. Tae Il leans forward and doesn’t really answer by asking Gook what he thinks the answer is. Gook tells Tae Il it really bugs him when people answer his question with a question.
Gook starts to settle into the bottom bunk, moving Tae Il’s pillow to the top bunk. Then he realizes what he’s doing and apologizes, adding that he’s afraid of heights. Tae Il gets up and straightens his pillow, telling Gook that tt's okay. It's more important whom I'm sharing the room with. More than where. He pats Gook on the shoulder. I think they’re playing this up but Tae Il’s going to totally be straight… Gook is so overjoyed that his new roommate is so accommodating that he helps himself to Tae Il’s wine. Tae Il doesn’t really object.
And as I suspected… The apartment Dae Goo bugged is Pan Suk’s. Although why he only placed one camera I don't know. Pan Suk comes home and gets a beer from his basically empty fridge. We see Dae Goo watching the feed on his laptop, Pan Suk sitting down on the couch. Pan Suk pulls out his phone and looks in his address book. He stops on ‘My Baby’ and stares at it and then rubs his face, tired, sad. He gets up, presumably to go to bed. Dae Goo shuts the laptop.
Now Dae Goo’s looking a his war board. As he looks at what he's investigated, stuff related to the case that got his Oma killed, we hear “It's been three months but Ga Won's grandmother still comes to the station everyday. Without your testimony we can't get a conviction.” “Why did Oma suddenly change her mind? Did you make her? You made her do it. And she took the stand. You should have kept your promise.” Dae Goo flips to the next screen: his missing child announcement. S calls. He tells the caller that he received what the caller sent him and that Detective Seo doesn't recognize him at all. He is, however, concerned about an idiot who used to live in Masan being on his team. Caller says something we don’t hear and Dae Goo hangs up the phone.
Dae Goo holds the case file from his mother’s murder. Masan School Nurse Murder Case Number 2003-00786. Seeing the pictures of his dead mother, he has to stop looking or he’ll break down.
Next day, Dae Goo sneaks into Mom’s (Kim Hwa Young) mausoleum, wearing a black hoodie and ball cap. He starts to stoically cry and, voice breaking, asks how she is. And he makes me cry. He says that he’s there. Oma. He looks down and grabs the brim of the cap and squeezes it closer to his face to hide the tears that are falling. And he makes me cry. Nicely acted.
Police Station. Eung Do’s telling Pan Suk about a new type of gold digger, who meets men at a luxurious club in Gangnam and then, working with the waiter, max out the guy’s credit cards. Six different restaurants with twenty-three total cases. Eung Do tells Tae Il to give Pan Suk the report from the newest 2 cases, but Soo Sun is there first. She plops the finger print analysis on Pan Suk’s desk and when he asks declares that it’s proof of her innocence. She says that her prints weren’t on the box cutter. Pan Suk starts to speak but she holds up a hand to silence him, saying that he doesn't need to apologize; it’s not why she did it. She just wanted to prove my innocence. She bows in apology and declares that she will do her best in the future. She also apologizes again for the slippers, adding that it will never happen again and she will do her very best in the future. Then she bows and *marches* back to her desk.
Since that’s over, Tae Il gives Pan Suk the report: One is about the maxed out card. The other one is for a stolen watch at the club's coat check. As he does, Soo Sun pulls out her crib sheet (with the speech she gave on it) and tells herself that she did well. The stolen watch was a limited edition and cost $100,000. Eung Do adds that one of the victims has plans today to meet a woman again at a restaurant. That sucker deserves to lose his money if he’s doing the same thing again after they stole money the first time. Eung Do orders the team to head out, but then Pan Suk benches them after recounting how pampered today’s twenty year olds are: their parents sign them up for classes... line up at the tutor center for them... and even call in sick at work for you.
Pan Suk chastises Gook for being so jovial. Tae Il’s got Gangnam style written all over him with his pale face and clothes. (For those of you who may not be familiar, Gangnam Style is basically a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam District of Seoul, where people are hip, trendy and high-class. Kind of like Beverly Hills, nouveau-riche, new money. Don’t worry, I had to look it up to make sure I was clearly understanding what they meant.) Tae Il’s clothes probably cost twice his salary, so is this a hobby for him? Pan Suk tells Dae Goo that he’ll pass on saying anything to him; Dae Goo’s not even worth it. Ouch, that had to hurt, considering all the baggage that Dae Goo’s got with regards to Pan Suk. Then he starts in on Soo Sun. Does she think this place is a joke? Then he tells them that Team 2 Leader Lee lives with his coffin already picked out and 3 years ago, Lee’s partner died from a stabbing. He tells them not to mess around and if they want to play detective, they should go to a survival game simulation. He calls them stupid young kids and declares that desk work is best for jerks whose ink hasn't even dried on their ID cards. And when they get tired of resting, they should file for a transfer! Pan Suk and Eung Do leave.
After they leave, Dae Goo is fuming. Gook clucks at Soo Sun for running the fingerprint analysis. She replies that it was *his* fingerprints on the box cutter. Gook denies it. She calls him a coward. They start to argue but stop when Dae Goo shouts at them to be quiet. Is that important right now? The point is Detective Seo left them behind.
Stakeout at the restaurant. The Dupe is working with Pan Suk and Eung Do because he gives a nod in their direction. The girl arrives but spots Pan Suk and Eung Do. She turns tail and runs and gives the boys the slip. Eung Do starts yelling at Pan Suk that they should have brought the youngsters, since the two of them have detective written all over their faces.
They go to a convenience store where Pan Suk is eating something on a stick. Eung Do declares that now their only chance is to run into the women at the club. But it will have to be the rookies, because the bad guys know what they look like. Pan Suk groans. Eung Do sympathizes over how much it sucks, but it sucks for the young kids, too, not to be given another chance. Eung Do proposes that they let the rookies do this as a test.
Back at the station, Gook is muttering about how the ink has long dried on my ID card. Soo Sun mutters that she suffered for three years to get this job; it's not a joke to her. Tae Il just looks at his phone and puts it down, disgusted. But then they get the call.
Briefing in the Van. Pan Suk looks disgusted, like always. He tells them that te most important thing in an undercover mission s remaining undercover. The second you're recognized it's over. They shouldn’t do anything noticeable. In particular... Don't get involved in any fighting. He tells them that this is their first and last chance.
The four enter the club. I can’t help but think how Dae Goo is *underdressed* since he’s wearing that black hoodie again. Does it make him invisible or something? They’re supposed to identify the gold diggers, get the girls' numbers and set a date. Soo Sun’s supposed to scout out the women's restroom. Gook asks one of the waiters at the club to help him meet pretty girls. Tae Il’s out on the floor and he looks like he’s in his element. Dae Goo’s looking at his phone at all the rich stuff that’s been fraudulently purchased. Then he looks at the crowd and picks out the stolen items.
Tae Il comes over and asks Dae Goo if he’s found anything. Dae Goo declares that he’s still narrowing them down. Tae Il asks how he’s doing it from over there. Dae Goo pulls a Sherlock Holmes and explains: The girl in the daring dress with flamboyant heels: she’s wearing typical club attire but her feet hurt so much she can barely dance. That means she doesn't normally wear heels. Her outfit is fancy but she has short nails without nail polish. She keeps her nails clean. Maybe a nail technician? She's here to relieve stress. She's unlikely to be a gold digger. Tae Il’s impressed. Dae Goo points out another girl: Wearing luxury brands from head to toe. Her bracelet is the most expensive from Cryslet. Her nails are long and adorned with nail art. She doesn't lift a finger and is likely to be from a rich family. She's a good distance from the woofer speakers standing directly underneath the AC vent. She's likely a club regular. Tae Il agrees that she is a regular.
Dae Goo points out another woman. She's dressed conservatively for a club but her watch is a Breguet Depuis 1775 # A00892 in navy. Of course, because they probably didn’t have an advertising agreement with Breguet, they spell it Brigue. They use the same font, though, and it sounds the same when said. At least I was able to figure out what manufacturer it is… They realize that it’s the stolen wallet.
They’re about to go talk to the girl when Gook arrives, asking Tae Il to teach him how to meet girls, because when he talk to girls, they all leave. Tae Il swaps jackets with Gook, telling him that with that brand he should be good enough to become a target for crime. Tae Il leaves Gook with Dae Goo and starts chatting up the gold digger. She gives Tae Il her phone number. Gook is impressed.
Soo Sun’s still in the bathroom. Two of the gold diggers arrive in the bathroom. Soo Sun starts her recorder and staggers out of the stall like she’s drunk. One girl says that President Kim is going to be mad. She also tells her friend – the watch girl from the dance floor – that she thought she saw a cop earlier at the restaurant. The gold diggers leave the bathroom and Soo Sun follows Diner Girl, who accidentally steps on Rich Girl’s shoe. This pisses Rich Girl off, so she chase after Diner Girl, shoves her, rips off her shoe and busts its heel. Diner Girl is not happy. Rich Girl throws money at Diner Girl and when Diner Girl calls Rich Girl a bitch, she gets a drink thrown in her face (and up her nose). Rich Girl takes off her shoes and starts waving it in Diner Girl’s face, calling her poor. Soo Sun gets really ticked on Diner Girl’s behalf and almost gets in a fight but Gook stops her. I'm a little puzzled why Soo Sun has this reaction to Rich Girl's behavior... Flashbacks to Seoul Girl?
Rich Girl clocks Diner Girl across the face with her bag, cutting Diner Girl’s forehead. Rich Girl demands that Diner Girl pay for the shoes by letting taking a beating and begins to beat her with the purse. Gook holds back a protesting Soo Sun. A hand reaches out and grabs Rich Girl’s wrist. It’s Dae Goo. He tells Rich Girl that she needs to stop. She’s committing a serious crime. When she protests, he points how she’s stupid since even with the lowest salary recorded in 2014, along with appropriate cleaning and lost compensation, Rich Girl has already gone over the line of defilement and physical harm. Got to love the Korean system of paying off civil suits so no charges are filed… Rich Girl rolls her eyes, throws down her purse and proceeds to attack Dae Goo, grabbing him by the hair and shoving him into a table. Soo Sun can’t take it and tries to get involved, but Rich Girl grabs her by the hair. Gook stomps on her shoe to get her to let go. They try to leave but Rich Girl runs after them and grabs both of them by the hair and then shoves them into a bunch of people on the dance floor, knocking them all down, including Tae Il, who looks at the girl like she’s crazy.
Two guys are sitting in a booth. One of them tells someone on the phone that he’s recording everything. They just have to record the transactions... and they realize that the girl they’ve been following has disappeared. And a big fight breaks out, with Dae Goo trying to make everybody stop. Dae Goo gets shoved to the ground and he sees a guy sitting on the floor after being stabbed. Flashback to the day Oma died. Soo Sun arrives and tries to help but Dae Goo is totally out of it, in shock.
Soo Sun sees the recording guy from earlier, who I think is a cop because he’s packing. She runs over and grabs his gun. He’s in the middle of the fight, so he can’t stop her. She aims for the sound system, hands shaking and then Dae Goo takes the gun and shoots instead. The music stops with everyone shocked. Soo Sun yells that it’s an emergency. A person is dying. Then everyone sees the guy on the floor. Girls scream. Someone calls 911. The owner of the gun asks for the gun and when Dae Goo gives it to him, he cold cocks Dae Goo.
People are getting escorted from the club by police. Eung Do and Pan Suk are wondering what’s going on. The police are arresting Dae Goo and the others. The guy from the club who was recording everything *was* a cop. He’s processing a handcuffed Dae Goo. He asks Dae Goo for his name. Dae Goo doesn’t answer, because the gold diggers are sitting right behind him. Detective is ticked that Dae Goo stole his gun and fired it. Do he know how serious this is? Dae Goo won’t answer. Cop orders Dae Goo put in a holding cell. The others follow suit, not identifying themselves. They all get locked up.
Later, Pan Suk arrives and tells cop that they’re all detectives. Cop yells at Pan Suk and Eung Do that the four ruined two months worth of drug investigation. Because he’s a jerk, he’s not going to just let them out, no matter how much Pan Suk begs. Outside the police station, Eung Do asks Pan Suk what they’re going to do. Pan Suk replies that they have no choice and Eung Do needs to call *the toad.*
And by Toad, they mean Captain Cha, who does not look happy.
Back at their own precinct, Pan Suk has a big stick. He slams it down on a desk and tells the four to answer his questions...honestly. Who started the fight? Dae Goo declares he did. And I’m surprised. Soo Sun immediately says that she started it. Tae Il and Gook declare that they all did. Pan Suk chuckles, irritated. He reminds them that this was their last chance. He’s mainly looking at Dae Goo. He demands that they all resign immediately. He rants some more.
Once he stops, Dae Goo pulls out the recorder and plays the recording they got. Pan Suk turns around, shocked. Eung Do declares that it sounds like the gold diggers. Gook blubbers that he got a date with one of them, too. He starts to cry as he says that they did their best. Soo Sun stayed in the bathroom to get the recording. They didn’t identify themselves so they wouldn’t break their cover. Eung Do asks them if that’s why they didn’t identify themselves. Gook replies that the gold diggers were right next to them. They couldn't ruin the case. Pan Suk’s not mad anymore. Eung Do pats Gook on the shoulder. Pan Suk clears his throat. His phone goes off, and so does the cloned phone in Dae Goo’s pocket. Is he busted?
Thoughts
Ah! I think this is shaping up to be one of my favorite k-dramas! Right from the get-go, we’re thrown into things. No exposition fairy. And the acting by Lee Seung Gi and especially Cha Seung Won is totally selling me on this show. Cha Seung Won’s nuances are amazing and it’s so evident that Pan Suk’s broken, although Dae Goo’s too blinded by his own anger and vengeance to see it.
I like that we’ve got lots of questions about these people’s back story. What did Pan Suk do that caused the breakup with Sa Kyung? It almost sounded like he cheated on her, but I’m hoping that it’s something else, related to his sadness over Ji Yong’s disappearance. And why did Soo Sun decide to be a cop? It’s a far cry from being a famous celebrity singer. And Tae Il… what’s his motivation, since he’s obviously *very* wealthy. I’m really hoping that the smiling guy is his hyung. And Congressman Yoo – I totally think he’s the bad guy, the reason for Thug finding Ji Yong at the high school.
I’m wondering when Soo Sun is going to see Thug again. I can see it happening in about 4 more episodes, as she and Dae Goo start to get closer, and I can see it happening by the Thug chasing Dae Goo, and Soo Sun seeing Thug but not seeing Dae Goo. Which kick starts her own hunt for Thug.
It’s interesting to me that the Chief of Police is a woman, considering how patronymic Korean society is. But it makes her really sympathetic to her men’s struggles. I get the feeling that her appointment is new, a result of all the firings, and she got the job because she was clean and also qualified. Pan Suk respects her, but he doesn’t respect the Toad. I love that nickname for Captain Cha. I really don’t want to have to wait for next week!
