Forty Five.
EMIL is arrested. She tells the reporters that they are an honest and reliable company swindled by a crooked supplier. They’re the victims in this situation and will be seeking damages! Chul Kyu makes a nice scene and Joo Ri feels sorry for herself. Chul Kyu says he’ll take care of it. At the police station, EMIL protests at the implication that she turned a blind eye to buying illegally imported mugwort.Asst Yoon is giving Se Yoon a report about what’s happened with EMIL’s noodles. Asst Yoon leaves and his assistant brings in the wedding invitations that they ordered. Se Yoon is tormented because what Dad has threatened.
Mom is meeting Oma at a café. She’s brought video and albums from Se Yoon’s childhood. She tells Oma about Dad’s ultimatum and declares that she will follow Oma and Se Yoon’s decision unconditionally. Oma asks after Unni’s health. She explains what Se Yoon said while drunk and that her heart is broken. And then she apologizes for saying she’s having a hard time in front of Oma. Oma’s starting to weaken in her resolve, so she wants to leave first. But before she goes, Mom just wants to retrieve one photo out of the album that she’s giving Oma, since it’s ALL the pictures she has of Se Yoon’s childhood. Oma agrees. Because Oma is awesome. Mom takes Se Yoon’s 100 day picture and thanks Oma. Oma leaves with the sack of stuff and Mom sadly looks at the picture and cries. Oma glances back before leaving.
At home, Oma immediately watches the video. His first steps. Crying Se Yoon. Chae Won stopping by to see Oma cry.
EMIL screaming at them to let her out of jail. Don’t they know who they have in there! The guard comes in and tells her to quiet down. They other ladies in the cell tell her to be quiet. And I’m hoping that they beat her up for being obnoxious. The lawyer tells Chul Kyu that they will at least have to halt production for at least a month. Another guy comes in and says that people are now protesting and the stock market price is effected.
Opera Man’s at the pharmacy looking for a pregnancy test. He says that he’s getting it for his *daughter.* AILs just happen up at the same pharmacy and overhear about the pregnancy test. They follow Opera Man home. As Auntie takes the test, the AILs yell at Opera Man. He finally tells them to mind their own business. And the world’s fastest pregnancy results are in: she’s pregnant! Happy couple, horrified AILs. Now they’re at home with Oehalmeoni and Oeharabeoji. Oehalmeoni is like to faint and then yells at Opera Man. Then she moans as she goes to lie down.
As she’s leaving Oehalmeoni mentions Chae Won, so Auntie wants to know what’s happened. Everyone bails rather than answer. Finally it’s just Auntie, Opera Man and Oeharabeoji. He congratulates them and tells Auntie to take care of herself.
Oma’s out walking, thinking. Chae Won finds her. She mentions seeing Oma watching the video earlier. Oma asks how Chae Won’s feeling and says that she can’t believe that she’s become an obstacle for them. She declares that she shouldn’t have come back to Korea, then everything is good. Phone call for Oma from Se Yoon. He asks to see her.
Dad comes home and give Mom the silent treatment. He won’t let her take his coat. She tells him that she gave Se Yoon’s childhood things to Oma. He asks her what she’s trying to do and why she’s just doing everything the way she wants *alone.* Is he that pathetic to her? Does he have to act the fool again when she says to let Se Yoon go? Dad declares that he cannot give up Se Yoon. So she needs to go to Oma and make Oma promise not to get the law involved. She’s appalled and declares that what he’s asking will kill Oma twice and she’s rather die than do that to her. At least she’s being a loyal friend again.
Se Yoon by Han River. Emotional eyes. Oma arrives a little late. He tells her that she waited 30 years, how could he not 30 minutes. She thanks him and tells him she was worried he’d curse her. She apologizes for not recognizing him. He tells her that it’s not her fault, so she shouldn’t feel guilty. Are you going to hug her or just look at her? They stand looking at the river. He asks about his father. Oma declares that he was a warm person, bright and was going to an Ivy-League school. They were both orphans. Because they were poor, he took a leave of absence from college and worked part time at a printing company. They didn’t have the money to get married properly but they were happy. Oma says that when she saw how Se Yoon was with Chae Won, it often reminded her of his father. She confesses about being so devastated after his father died that she almost aborted him and tried to kill herself, too. She starts to cry. Se Yoon is understanding. He calls her Oma and tells her it’s not her fault. Multiple vein bulges! Oma cries and takes his hand. Se Yoon’s crying too. He tells her that regardless of what anyone says, she’s the mom who bore him. And they finally hug and cry together.
Chae Won’s making noodles. Se Yoon arrives at the factory and watches her for a moment. She turns around and sees him and asks him why he didn’t say anything to let her know he was there. He tells her that he wants to looks at her face for a long time. She asks about him talking to Oma. He says that she cried a lot, but she’ll probably be crying more, venting 30 years of regrets. He pulls out the wedding invitation and declares that no matter what, he’s getting married on the date they planned. Chae Won doesn’t see how, since the world knows him as Mom’s son. He doesn’t see a problem. I don’t either. The world doesn’t have to know the truth. Really. Even as she tells him to be reasonable, he declares he’ll never pretend like they’re not getting married.
Sibs are watching the news report about EMIL’s company. EMIL’s moaning and causing a ruckus in jail. Cellmate tells her to shut up and EMIL is insulting. And EMIL wakes up the wrong lady but is bailed out just in time. Sales are down in all areas. Stock is down and the bank will not extend the bank loan repayment date. EMIL goes off with Lawyer Hong to discuss something. Joo Ri’s just pissed that her revenge didn’t succeed.
Se Yoon returns home to a waiting Mom. She asks about him meeting with Oma and Se Yoon refers to Oma as Oma, ripping out Mom’s heart. But he’s not mean about it. And he feels bad about not being nice to Mom. Chae Won is thinking about everything, while Oeharabeoji looks on. He goes in to a clucking Oehalmeoni. He tells his wife to let Chae Won and Auntie to do what they want. Oehalmeoni’s worried about what people would say if they found out and Oeharabeoji replies that you can’t worry about what other people would think. Oehalmeoni declares she can’t be nice!
Opera Man’s waiting for the men folk at the bathhouse, having been invited by Oeharabeoji. YUnc doesn’t want to go in, but EUnc and Appa get him to go in. Oeharabeoji waxes poetic. They give his a hard time about talking about the end of his life. He tells Appa not to worry about Chae Won’s situation. To EUnc, he tells him not to be greedy for money, because noodles are meant to satisfy hungry stomachs. To YUnc, he tells to treat Opera Man well. He makes Opera Man promise to live another 50 years. And Appa thinks that something’s off about Oeharabeoji.
Oma’s moaning about the wedding that should be happening the next day. Chae Won doesn’t eat breakfast, looks haggard, and overworks herself. Mom goes looking for Se Yoon and sees the wedding invitation on the desk.
EMIL is pacing at her company. Chul Kyu enters with bad news. The bank won’t postpone the date for the loan: Fifty Billion Won. Chul Kyu declares that they’ll have to sell their shares but EMIL declares that they’re worthless. Yelling between them. Chul Kyu leaves. Joo Ri arrives with advice from Lawyer Hong to sell everything.
Oppa arrives at Noodle Factory looking for YAIL. EAIL comes across him and when she tells YAIL tells her not to say anything to YUnc. But YUnc notices her leaving and decides to go out and investigate. More compliments from Oppa. YAIL hears YUnc’s voice and makes them hide. When Oppa asks, she lies and says that YUnc is her brother.
Auntie’s having a craving for something spicy and when they go out to eat the Soon Dae soup, they run into YAIL and Oppa. And Oppa mentions how YAIL and Auntie don’t look alike at all. Busted. Auntie asks Oppa why he hasn’t married and he says that he never got over his first love… YAIL.
EMIL’s on the phone being all shady with Atty Hong. She trusts only him and apparently he’s supposed to squirrel away her money so the creditors won’t get it. EMIL’s stressing about the bank loan. And I don’t care… Chul Kyu announces that he got the back to put off bankruptcy hearings until 10 am the next morning.
Se Yoon is looking out the office window again, thinking of his last conversation with Dad. Dad told him that he’ll be assigned to a branch in the U.S. So that he can get over everything quickly. Since marrying Chae Won is out of the question! Se Yoon protests that he’s said he’ll never get over Chae Won. So they’re going to get married, as planned, tomorrow. Dad says that if Se Yoon does this, he’ll be kicked out of the company. In the present, Se Yoon sighs and pulls his RESIGNATION LETTER out of the desk. I love him so much! That’s someone with character. He leaves it on the desk and walks away from his job.
Se Yoon goes home and starts packing. Mom comes in and finds him. He declares that he submitted his resignation and he is leaving home. And he looks miserable, bulging forehead vein and all. Again, he states that as planned, he will marry Chae Won tomorrow. Is he trying to convince everyone else or himself? Mom stammers, asking him if he must do this. He replies that no matter how much he thinks about it, he has no other choice. Mom sighs and tells him to go. She shouldn’t hold him back any more. She also tells him to give Chae Won her congratulations. Se Yoon holds back his tears as he says thank you and leaves. Mom has to sit on the bed, since her world is now over.
The dramatic music continues to play as Se Yoon arrives at the Noodle House. Oeharabeoji is outside, looking at his noodles. Se Yoon greets him and asks his permission to kidnap Chae Won. Oeharabeoji doesn’t look that surprised. Se Yoon declares that no matter what he tries, he cannot give up on Chae Won, and they shouldn’t have to give up on their future because of Oma and Mom’s past. Oeharabeoji nods. Se Yoon asks for permission again. Three times and Oeharabeoji tells him to take her; Se Yoon has his permission. Se Yoon is grateful and Oeharabeoji just smiles.
Se Yoon enters the Noodle Factory, where Chae Won is working. Late at night. When she asks why he’s there, he declares that he’s come to kidnap her, with Oeharabeoji’s permission. And he drags her off. In the car, he won’t tell her where they’re going. She realizes what he means to do and tells him to think of their family. He shakes his head and declares that he’s only going to think about the two of them from now on. They end up outside a church where they’re going to be getting married.
Forty Six.
Se Yoon and Chae Won arrive at the church. He declares that if they don’t do it like this (elope), they might be finished forever. It could be their last chance. Chae Won worries about someone getting hurt because of what they’re going to do. Se Yoon replies that in life, someone can always get hurt one way or another by him. She points out that it’s *their mom.* He starts to scold her for always focusing on others needs and never thinking about her own. Does she really not care about her own sufferings? And what about him? If he’s in pain… if he’s wounded… she doesn’t care? And then he twists the knife. He asks her if she’s sure that she can call him Oppa. She gasps at the thought of that.Se Yoon shakes his head and declares that he doesn’t have the confidence that he can accept being that to her. He tells Chae Won that when he sees her, he wants to kiss her, hold her hand, hug her. And not in a brotherly way. He’s starting to tear up as he declares that he doesn’t want to live the rest of his life hearing her call him Oppa. Even though some married couples do that, don’t they? But I get what he means. Having to call him Brother rather than Husband. Oi. He tells her that he will take are of everything, she just has to stay by his side. He takes her hand and asks her to have courage. She nods that she will.
Mom’s drinking. Dad comes home and starts to yell at her for being drunk. She tells him that Se Yoon left home. And he’s getting married. Dad yells at her for not stopping him. She declares that she had no right to stop him; she didn’t even give birth to him! Then she tells Dad to get out; after all that’s what Dad promised to do, so he should leave. Dad can’t believe what she’s saying. Mom tells him that it wouldn’t have been like this *if only Dad hadn’t driven him to the edge*! Speak the truth, Mom! Dad can’t believe she’s blaming him. She yells at him that Dad should have just let them get married! Then Se Yoon wouldn’t have left home! Then she starts yelling at Dad to go bring back her son! Dad declares that she’s unsalvageable and leaves her. Now alone, Mom tells herself there’s nothing to fear and that she’s all right. And drinks straight from the bottle.
Oma goes looking for Chae Won in her room. When she finds it empty, Oma starts putting out Chae Won’s bed. Oeharabeoji comes in and tells Oma that he gave Se Yoon permission Chae Won so they can get married. Appa overhears and he can’t believe it. Oeharabeoji tells him to chill, since they love each other. Then Oeharabeoji goes back downstairs. Appa’s flipping out but Oma wants him to leave it alone. Appa screams at Oma, saying he’s disappointed. If she *really* thought of Chae Won as her daughter, Oma wouldn’t be acting like this! Oma’s hurt. Appa storms out.
Se Yoon and Chae Won arrive at the best bed and breakfast in the neighborhood. He’s trying to act positive and she’s not saying much. Hyung’s coming to the ceremony as their witness and Hyung’s brother-in-law is going to be the minister. She asks how he did all this and he jokes that he’s pretty capable. She agrees and Se Yoon starts to relax since she’s just said something encouraging.
EMIL and Chul Kyu are worried about the bankruptcy hearing in the morning. And I don’t care that EMIL looks wasted. Drunk Joo Ri. Aigoo!
Opera Man’s bringing Auntie some food but her fickle pregnancy taste buds do like it. She wants YAIL’s pig feet! YAIL is sitting dreaming of Oppa. The phone rings and it’s Auntie demanding the pig’s feet. Blackmail and YAIL sweetly changes her tune. YUnc is annoyed on YAIL’s sake but when YAIL stops him from scolding and he concludes that she’s doing it all to gain brownie points with him. He offers to hug her as a reward. She stomps off but YUnc is tickled that his ex-wife wants him back.
Oma’s in the room crying. Appa comes in and apologizes. Oma at first doesn’t look at him then she does and declares that if only she wasn’t there, none of this would be a problem. She leaves the room without really explaining.
Se Yoon fixes up Chae Won’s bed and then he tries to weasel cuddling and sleeping in the same room. When she protests, he says he’s kidding. Oma calls but Se Yoon takes the phone so she doesn’t answer it. He turns her phone off as well as his own – just until the wedding.
Oma leaves a sweet message wishing them a beautiful wedding and congratulations. She starts to cry as she says that she really wants to see them get married and that she loves both of them. Mom’s staring at that one picture of Se Yoon that she has and crying. She starts to have a panic attack and in decides to scarf down some tranquilizers to calm herself, washing them down with the liquor. And leaves them out so that it’s really obvious what she’s od’d on when they find her later.
Se Yoon is sitting thinking about Mom, their last words. Chae Won is not sleeping either.
The next morning Oeharabeoji announces to the family what Se Yoon and Chae Won have done. Oehalmeoni isn’t happy. EAIL wonders how Mom is. YUnc wonders how they’re going to be related to Se Yoon now. Appa leaves first without really eating. Oma isn’t saying anything.
Se Yoon is washing up OUTSIDE. Chae Won comes outside and he clucks at how she’s a sleepy head. He gets some warm water for her and offers her full service treatment. A cute scene with him declaring just how much he’ll take care of her.
EAIL’s calling over to try to talk to Mom. Maid declares that she’s not up since she drank a lot the night before. Oma overhears and worries.
Chae Won and Se Yoon drive in a very decorated car to go get new clothes for the wedding. And because Chae Won can’t dress herself, he picks out her outfit. They also buy the rings and bouquet. Se Yoon’s beaming and Chae Won smiles, but it’s less joyous.
EMIL and Chul Kyu waiting for the money. Assistant arrives to say that they couldn’t get the loan so they’re now in a preliminary bankruptcy!
EAIL calls Mom again and she’s worried. She rushes over to Mom’s house.
Waiting for the wedding to start. Chae Won is trying to look happy. Se Yoon and Hyung arrive. Hyung compliments her and Se Yoon readily agrees so Hyung teases him. Hyung goes inside to give them a moment. Se Yoon thanks Chae Won for trusting him and being courageous. He promises that he’ll make it easy for her to follow him. He goes inside and Chae Won sighs.
EAIL arrives at the house with Maid really worried. Mom won’t answer her locked door. But Maid has the keys and they find an unconscious Mom. EAIL spots the pills and booze. Mom won’t wake up. EAIL rushes her to the hospital.
Hyung wants Se Yoon to call Mom but Se Yoon’s going to wait. Outside, Chae Won’s gotten a hold of her phone and listens to Oma’s message. Se Yoon comes out and calls her inside. The phone rings before she puts it away.
The wedding ceremony starts. Se Yoon enters with Hyung taking pictures. Announce the bride and Chae Won doesn’t enter. Hyung goes outside to check and Chae Won is not there. Se Yoon hurries outside and starts yelling for her. His poor face. The desperation. Chae Won calls on Hyung’s phone. She’s hiding around the corner of the church. Se Yoon wants to know where she is. She tells him that Mom was rushed to the hospital in critical condition because of the OD. She wants him to go back to Seoul. She can’t go through with the wedding like this. They won’t be happy. Se Yoon begs her talk about this first but she lies and tells him that she’s on her way to Seoul now, so he should leave too. Then she hangs up and watches as Se Yoon sags to the ground, destroyed that the marriage did not happen as planned.
Se Yoon sits in the empty church for a while and then goes, leaving his boutonniere behind. Does that mean it’s all over? I feel really bad for both of them.
Oma arrives at the hospital. Doctor comes out and declares that they got Mom there just in time. And that she’s been abusing her medication, so she’ll need to stay in the hospital for a while. Oma can’t believe that Unni’s come to this. EAIL mentions how Dad left, too. Oma takes Mom unconscious hand.
YAIL gets a flower pot of roses and gushes over her Oppa. He bought them because he saw them and thought of her. And… Oppa’s brought another flower pot to Auntie and Opera Man. Something’s fishy here. Oppa’s there because Opera Man has broadcast dates! YUnc arrives home looking for YAIL and Bo Reum mentions that YAIL got flowers. YUnc wants her to come wash his back but she’s sure she’s got a new man so she’s not doing it! Then she sends a message to Oppa thanking him for the flowers. But she sends it to YUnc instead.
EMIL’s trying to convince the bankruptcy board that everything’s great. They want all of EMIL’s private holdings too. She’s thrilled that she put together the scam with Attorney Hong to liquidate her assets so the creditors don’t get anything!
Oma’s working on Oeharabeoji’s tonic and thinking about what Appa and Mom said and makes a decision. She takes Oeharabeoji out to buy his burial clothes, telling him that they’re buying it now so that he can live a good long time. Oma wants to buy the hand-woven fabric while Oeharabeoji wants the cheep stuff. She begs him to accept to rich one. She makes him pinky promise not to wear it until 20 years have passed. She cries and Oeharabeoji tries not to.
Chae Won arrives home, dragging with sorrow. Appa comes out and starts yelling at her. Not noticing that her husband is not with her. Because all honeymooners wander around apart. She mumbles a sorry. He demands to know where Se Yoon is and she says that they didn’t get married.
Se Yoon’s driving in his car. Upset. He rushes in to so Mom and is torn up to see he unconscious. Bulging vein as he tells Mom that he’s there. He thinks about how he drunkenly called her a scary person. Crying, he apologizes for giving her heartache.
Chae Won is sadly sitting in her room. Oma brings her some warm milk. Chae Won’s still wearing her engagement ring. Oma encourages Chae Won not to worry. Then she mentions the almost wedding. Chae Won says that she must really be a fool because she couldn’t just think about the two of them. Oma tells her that it’s not because she’s an idiot but because Chae Won’s heart is so big and kind. Chae Won weeps because of how much Se Yoon must be hurting right now. Appa comes in to overhear Chae Won crying and Oma comforting her.
Mom wakes up and is surprised Se Yoon’s there. She also asks about the wedding and where Chae Won is. Se Yoon tells her that the wedding didn’t happen. Mom tries to get out of bed to fix it, but she’s too weak.
Oma’s fingering the noodles. Her face is sad, resigned. She’s going to do something stupid. Oma brings Oeharabeoji his medicine. She goes in and covers up a sleeping Chae Won. She tries to not cry as she looks at Chae Won.
Next morning, Appa’s yelling for Chae Won. And of course, it gets the whole house. Oma’s left Appa (via note)! Actually it’s a stamped divorce paper. What is she thinking? Oehalmeoni and Oeharabeoji both collapse from the shock, as does Appa.
Chae Won finds Se Yoon at work. She tells him that Oma left home and has turned off her phone. She wants to know if Se Yoon has heard from her. He’s looking at her, thinking the same thing I’m thinking: that’s all you have to say after dumping him at the altar? Forehead vein bulge alert. He tells her that if Oma calls him, he’ll have *his secretary* call her. Ouch! Se Yoon adds that besides having to meet for work, he hopes that there won’t be any need to meet for personal reasons. Wow. That’s cold. I can understand you being upset but that’s a little harsh.
