100 Year Inheritance Episodes 49-50 Recap

Forty Nine.

Se Yoon after the crash, Chae Won waiting at the airport, looking for him. Why she wouldn’t be at the *gate* since they have a ticket for the same flight… Se Yoon’s heart stops.

Mom returns home. Dad asks where she went. Mom declares that she met with Chae Won and gave her a plane ticket. Dad can’t believe she did that. She did it to protect the last bit of conscience she has. Dad says that he feels bad, but she’s making things more complicated. Mom asks him for a divorce. Wow. That’s really big for Korean chaebol society especially. You just don’t get divorced. Phone call. The news that Se Yoon is in the hospital, close to death.

Chae Won at the airport, wondering why he’s not picking up the phone, She tries to find out if Se Yoon got on the plane, but they can’t tell her because of the Personal Information Protection Act. Phone call from Mom. News about Se Yoon’s accident.

Mom and Dad arrive at the hospital. They hear about his cardiac event and now he needs brain surgery. Even with surgical intervention, 60% of patients still die. Mom starts to weep and beg the doctor to save him. Chae Won arrives. Mom can barely sputter about the surgery. Chae Won immediately starts to cry and beg Se Yoon to forgive her for not going to him sooner. And Dad, I hope you feel like a heel! Chae Won begs Se Yoon to give her one more chance. Finally, Dad looks sorry.

Oma and Appa arrive at the hospital. No one can tell her that Se Yoon will be all right after the surgery.

Chul Kyu is on the job as a substitute driver. He drops someone off in his old neighborhood and notices that someone’s moved in to his old house. He misses the new owner, but just barely. Coco! Which means Hong Joo. A very pregnant Hong Joo. And Mrs. Park! Welcome back. And she’s moved into the home of her ex-husband, which she probably bought when it went on the market. Hmmm… She also looks to be enjoying motherhood, too, which she was very opposed to before it happened… Hmm…

EMIL and Joo Ri whining. I really don’t care what happens with them. Chul Kyu returns home, with his bright and cheerful attitude. Spurred on by Chae Won’s words, I’m sure. If he wasn’t such a mama’s boy, he’d actually be really likeable. Except for the part where he can sometimes get violent with his wife. He tries to cheer them up with fried chicken. Should have brought Popeye’s.

Oma, Chae Won and Mom are visiting Se Yoon an unconscious Se Yoon. Oma is begging him to wake up. The doctor appears and reports that the surgery was successful but they aren’t sure what will happen because of the severe trauma to his brain. Should have gotten a car with airbags, I’m telling you! Appropriately dramatic reactions to the high probability that the Se Yoon may never regain consciousness. Oma cries and begs him to open his eyes. Mom silently cries.

Mom is outside, trying to compose herself. Mom goes to comfort her. She tells Oma will wake up soon, as if nothing had happened. Oma declares that if only she hadn’t have come back to Korea, then everything would have been wonderful for everyone. She’s not feeling sorry for herself at all. Mom declares that it’s *her* fault for stealing Se Yoon as a baby. She starts to cry, wishing that she had been the one punished. They hold each other and cry. At least their friendship is repaired.

Chae Won sits and thinks of how Se Yoon asked her to tell him not to go, their last farewell. Dad approaches. He APOLOGIZES. Never thought I would see that one. He declares that if he hadn’t have been stubborn, this wouldn’t have happened. And out of the three people so far, he’s the most right. Se Yoon wouldn’t have had to hurry to see his Oma if Dad had relented, because Oma would have already been back in his life, and he wouldn’t have been in a hurry to catch his plane if Dad hadn’t have pushed for Se Yoon to go to America. Chae Won must have heard Mom, because she says that it's her fault instead. What's with everyone blaming themselves? 

YAIL is at an outdoor café, thinking about how she was completely humiliated by her misunderstanding of Oppa. She almost drops her bottle of Soju, but YUnc is there to save the bottle. He sits and clucks at her. She snaps back. He yells at her for the Oppa thing and asks if she would have said yes. She mutters that it’s not like that. And we know that she was actually hesitating before she was embarrassed. He still yells at her for acting like he and Bo Reum were nothing. She answers that they were happy, but because life was hard, her heart got cold. She tells him that Oppa’s flattery softened her heart, because he treated her as a woman and not just as a wife. She yells at him that she hasn’t done anything wrong and stomps away. He chases after her and starts walking behind her. She asks him how he found out. He explains about the bad text. She cant’ believe he acted like he didn’t know. He tells her that he’s not smart, etc., so how could he hold onto her. And as a man, if she found someone who made her happy, he should wish her well. I think that’s stupid, but she’s swayed. YUnc declares, pounding his heart with his fist, that just like he has only one heart, his love is only for her… she’s the first and only love of his life. She starts to cry and tells him thank you and she’s sorry. They both start crying and hugging each other. So I guess they reconciled and will reregister their marriage.

Nurse comes out and gives Chae Won Se Yoon’s wedding ring, which he was wearing around his neck on a chain. She thinks of when they bought it, abandoning him at the chapel, Oma crying. She blames herself for what’s happened. She begs him for one last chance. And I’m a little emotional. I wasn’t expecting that.

Chul Kyu and his family eating. EMIL has no appetite. Chul Kyu makes her go to the doctor by yelling at her. Let me guess, this is where he’s going to run into Hong Joo, because there’s only one hospital in all of Seoul. I didn’t see this happening. Chul Kyu almost gets run over by the orderlies moving Se Yoon’s body, so Chul Kyu sees the unconscious Se Yoon. He gets the rundown from the orderlies, who move Se Yoon to a regular hospital room. The doctor tells the parents that the swelling around Se Yoon’s brain has gone down but he has no idea when Se Yoon will wake up. But Se Yoon needs to wake up before 4 months have passed, or he probably won’t wake up at all.

Chul Kyu’s skulking outside Se Yoon’s room, so he runs into Chae Won. They go for a talk. She declares that Se Yoon is going to wake up and until then, she’s going to stay by his side and protect him. And for the hundredth time she tells Chul Kyu to stop trying to get back together with her. She begs him to find his own path and go.

Unconscious Se Yoon with Oma holding his hand. Mom approaches and tells her to watch over Se Yoon, because she’s going. But if Oma ever needs her, she’s just a phone call away. And I wonder when Chae Won’s going to sit with him, since she hasn’t done that yet. Maybe that will wake him up. It always works in other dramas… Mom leaves and Oma begs him to let her make up for the past 30 years.

EMIL’s looking for Chul Kyu. He arrives and she yells at him. He doesn’t mention Se Yoon. But EMIL spots Mom and tries to go talk to her, but Chul Kyu stops her. He explains that Se Yoon was hurt in a car accident. Please don’t tell me we’re going to have to sit through Joo Ri crying over Se Yoon.

Chae Won and Appa arrive home. They give the family an update and Oehalmeoni aigoo's.

Publicity event for Opera Man, signing autographs. No one is showing up. Opera Man gets up and starts announcing himself, with Gangham Style playing. Oehalmeoni and EAIL stumbles across the event. They see how it’s flopping and Oehalmeoni has an idea. She hurries home and the family makes noodles for the event. And I have something in my eye. YUnc uses his megaphone to get people’s attention. The family works together to make Opera Man’s event a success, with lots of older adoring ladies. And we get to hear that ‘Break Away’ song again.

Chul Kyu is thinking. I think he *finally* got the idea. He gets a call for a substitute driver, to pick someone up at the Tae Sang Group. I wonder who that could be. He, of course, doesn’t even wonder. Hong Joo’s in the backseat with a big straw hat and sunglasses on. She doesn’t speak, just nods and passes him a piece of paper with her destination. About halfway into the ride, she tells him to keep his eyes on the road and he realizes it’s her. He pulls over immediately. He asks her why she’s there. She tells him ‘business.’ She tells him that she’s hungry, so they should go get something to eat. He can’t believe her.

They go to a train-station café. Chul Kyu declares that it’s all he can afford on his salary. Hong Joo doesn’t mind. She asks for a hand out of the car. He thinks she’s picking on him, but it’s really because she’s really pregnant, which he finally realizes. He asks where the baby’s father is and she slaps him, telling him if that’s any way for a baby’s father to talk.

The restaurant. Chul Kyu can’t believe that she got drunk from *one* time. That’s all it can take, dude. She tells him that he’s got some prowess and calls him Babe. He asks her if she’s really certain it’s his and she glares at him and almost throws water on him but he apologizes. She tells he that he doesn’t have to feel burdened. He replies that it’s not that, he’s just shocked. He asks how she’s feeling and apparently it’s a very sweet baby.

Oma with Se Yoon. More begging for him to wake up so they can take a trip together. Appa and Chae Won arrive. How can you not be rushing to his side? Chae Won tells Oma that she’s there to watch over Se Yoon. Oma argues until Chae Won asks Oma to let them have a date. Oma and Appa leave. Chae Won sits and announces that she’s there. She also asks for a recharge of her battery. Flashback. I must be emotional today, because this gets me, too. Chae Won announces that recharging is complete.

EMIL’s just told Joo Ri about the car accident and coma. Joo Ri rushes out, missing Chul Kyu, who is still in a daze about becoming a father. When EMIL asks what his deal is, he announces that Hong Joo is back in Korea. EMIL thinks they should get some of that alimony settlement. He yells at her and she yells back, declaring that she almost dropped a baby (was startled to death). Chul Kyu asks her if she’s pregnant, too. She doesn’t catch what he means but calls him stupid.

Oma’s back home, getting yelled at Oehalmeoni for running away. Lots of crying. Oehalmeoni declares that Oeharabeoji will help from heaven. Now, that would be cool, if Se Yoon woke up and said he saw Oeharabeoji.

Hospital. Joo Ri arrives. She declares that she came, even though it’s shameless. Chae Won is gracious. Joo Ri tells Se Yoon to wake up, mentioning Eun Seol. He still doesn’t wake up. Outside the room, Joo Ri tells Chae Won that she’ll pray for Se Yoon and calls Chae Won Unni. She apologizes again for how evil she’s been. And this time, her apology is sincere. And a bit sweet. I never thought I’d say that about Joo Ri.

Mom is at the orphanage washing clothes. The old fashioned way. Oma massages Se Yoon’s legs but he doesn’t wake up. Chae Won works on the noodles. Mom asks the Blessed Mother for help. Chae Won reads to Se Yoon.

Chul Kyu is having to drive Hong Joo again. He’s irritated, even after she tells him that she has a checkup for the baby. She makes him go into the appointment and Chul Kyu is amazed at his baby. And he calls Hong Joo Yeobo. Doctor tells Chul Kyu that he should massage Hong Joo’s lower back before bedtime and he’s uncomfortable. She giggles.

It’s been a month. The doctors enter and declare that Se Yoon is now in a vegetative state. Chae Won can’t believe that he’s going to sleep like this forever. And I can’t believe that there’s only one episode left to fix this mess.

Fifty.

The last episode. And I can’t believe that the hero is *still* in a coma.

Chae Won is shaving the comatose Se Yoon. She’s wearing his ring around her neck. She clucks at him about how he promised she wouldn’t have to even put her hands in water. She declares that his joke has gone too far and even though he might fool the other doctors, he can’t fool her. She knows he can hear everything she’s saying. He needs to hurry and get up. She wipes off his face and tells him he’s very handsome. Then she kisses his cheek. And a tear rolls down Se Yoon’s cheek. Which gets me a little.

Oehalmeoni has brought Oma’s some soup, since she’s still in bed. She kind of looks like she has a migraine. She’s even grabbing her head. Oma starts to cry and wonders how she can drink this as a mother. Oehalmeoni basically tells her she’s being stupid. Mom’s just endure this type of stuff.

Oma goes and visits Mom at the orphanage. Oma declares that Mom is suffering as much as she ever has and tells Mom that she raised Se Yoon well. Oma asks Mom to come back to Seoul. Mom declares that she’s there to do her penance. And I wonder if Mom’s the one who will finally get him to wake up.

Chul Kyu and Hong Joo are at a café. He’s still stunned, seeing his child. She tells him that she only brought him along because she didn’t want to feel inferior to the other wives. Chul Kyu declares that she’s amazing. And strong. Hong Joo declares that she kept the baby because she wants a child that looks like him. And she doesn’t know why she likes a Mama’s Boy like him, but she just does. She leaves and he looks at his baby’s picture.

Chul Kyu’s at the hospital and happens by Se Yoon’s room. Chae Won’s crying out for Se Yoon to wake up. And it looks like Se Yoon is having a seizure. They roll him on his side and then wait for the results from the doctor. The doctor declares that he’s fine now, not really giving any type of explanation as to what happened or why he’s okay. Afterward, Chul Kyu tells her that she inspires him… But instead of asking her back for the umpteenth time… He declares that lately there’s another life that he’s been wanting to live. He mentions Hong Joo being pregnant and seeing Chae Won has helped him with the courage not to run away from being a dad.

Chul Kyu is still in somewhat a daze when he goes home. He tells EMIL congratulations. Which is totally random, so I have to laugh. What a way to tell your mom… Chul Kyu holds out the ultrasound. EMIL asks whose it is and Chul Kyu’s offended, because it’s his. And Chul Kyu tells her that it’s Hong Joo’s. Hong Joo is sitting in their old house, happily looking at the ultrasound. EMIL calls her and yells at her for thinking that Chul Kyu is a pushover. Hong Joo only smiles and asks if she’s well. EMIL wants proof. Hong Joo just replies that EMIL’s the same. EMIL wants the alimony back. She wants to meet but Hong Joo refuses because it wouldn’t be good for the baby. Then she hangs up. Which is why I like Hong Joo.

Se Yoon is in the ICU with Chae Won by his side. She looks less optimistic.

EMIL’s reading the paper. Hong Joo’s just taken over their old company, which has made EMIL change her tune about Hong Joo. Like Hong Joo’s a pushover.

Chae Won’s in Se Yoon’s empty room. Oma and Appa arrive. She breaks the news about the convulsions. But he’s going to be moved back to a regular floor shortly.

Noodle Factory. The arrival of new flour. The Sibs really are enjoying working at the factory. And the YSibs have still put off reregistering their marriage, until YUnc gives her a proper proposal. Chae Won arrives with their share of the profits. It’s a lot of money!

EAIL is out with EUnc, shopping. She spots a purple purse she likes. EUnc doesn’t complain. But EAIL puts it back when she sees the prices and hurries him out of the store. She declares that the price made her nervous, because of how many noodles they would have to sell to pay for it.

YUnc is planning out his proposal, which includes hanging the ring with the noodles. He runs off to get YAIL. While he's gone, Opera Man and Auntie arrive and Opera Man spies the ring. The hear the YSibs and try to sneak off with the ring, to give them a hard time. YUnc demands Opera Man turn it over and then Opera Man stuffs it in his mouth. Then he swallows it. Why?

Finger twitch from Se Yoon! Chae Won rushes to the hospital and Se Yoon has finally woken up! Luckily he doesn’t have amnesia and recognizes them. Oma starts crying and thanks him for waking up. Chae Won gives Mom a call. And Mom makes me cry with how happy she is. She’s crying and laughing at the same time.

The family gets the news, too. Everyone is happy.

Chul Kyu driving Hong Joo. She tells him she heard he became a total pauper. He makes a face and grumbles. She asks him if he *really* has to live with his mother, instead of it being the two of them. He looks at her like she’s crazy. Because I think this is the first time this has come up. She’s cracking me up, because she has this plan and is letting him in on it little by little, like she knows that he's going to go along. Chul Kyu declares that his mother has changed.

They were on their way to see EMIL. Hong Joo’s properly respectful and EMIL is nice. Hong Joo mentions the unexpected burden of become CEO. EMIL tries to angle to get her company back, even going as far as rubbing Hong Joo’s stomach. Hong Joo’s face is priceless it says that this is totally weird. EMIL apologizes for how she treated Hong Joo and Hong Joo replies that it’s all past. EMIL them to start fresh, so she’s going to consider Hong Joo her real daughter and not a DIL. Hong Joo nods, like she’s going along with it and then crinkles her nose and asks EMIL whether she’s planning on having all of them like *there.* Joo Ri can’t believe she just said that and Chul Kyu’s scratching the back of his neck like he can’t hear the conversation.

EMIL goes and sits back on the other couch again. EMIL spins their current situation. Hong Joo invites them to come to her house, then… which is their old house. EMIL clarifies that she bought their old house. Hong Joo adds that she has a job lined up for Joo Ri, too, if Joo Ri’s available. She asks Chul Kyu if he’ll be her Chief Secretary. He just blinks and she asks why he's not answering. EMIL cries that of course, he likes it! EMIL declares that she’s become the family’s savior and Chul Kyu has an odd look on his face.

Se Yoon is awake. And unlike most dramas, he actually is acting like he’s been in a coma. Mom and Dad, Oma and Appa and Chae Won are there. Mom mentions how every morning Chae Won brushed his teeth and shaved his face. Chae Won’s embarrassed and says that she only did what was normal. For some people. And Dad proposes that the pair quickly get married. Dad of all people! Dad apologizes for being a butthead. Mom calls him honey. And Se Yoon weakly tells Dad thank you.

Chae Won hands Se Yoon a glass to take his medicine and he drops it. Everyone is stunned. Even though your muscles atrophy with non-use and he was in a coma for over a month. The dramatic music plays. Even though this is *not* unusual. The doctor enters. Se Yoon mentions having no strength in his hands and legs. The doctor declares that he may have undetected nerve damage. Or atrophied muscles. Se Yoon asks if the doctor is saying he might not be able to walk. Doctor can neither confirm nor deny that but tells Se Yoon that he should work hard at his rehab. Which is totally normal. The rehab part.

Chae Won takes Se Yoon for a stroll in the wheel chair. She gives him back the ring and thanks him for still having it. She tells him that the day of his accident, she was at the airport waiting for him, so he shouldn’t be mad anymore. He asks how he can be mad at her, since she’s been the person protecting him all this time. Yay, the old Se Yoon is back. He thanks her and says he owes her a life-time of debt. She tells him she’ll let him repay her… and brings up them getting married. He interrupts her, saying that he’s sorry, but he can’t even walk, so proposing is out of the question. Say what?! He does have brain damage! Chae Won can’t believe what he’s saying. And neither can I.

EMIL’s moving all her stuff back into the house. Or rather directing the movers. She’s over the moon. EMIL asks Hong Joo where Mrs. Park is and Hong Joo replies that she sent Mrs. Park away, since EMIL is here to help out… Bam! She is so wrong, but so right! EMIL can’t believe what she’s hearing, but swallows it. She starts to go to her room when Hong Joo blocks her way and declares that it’s no longer EMIL’s room. It’s the largest room in the house and she wants to hog it? Not that their old room was *small*. Hong Joo encourages EMIL to be sensible, what with EMIL *living off of her* and all. I really have to give this girl props, because this is the *only* way to keep EMIL from being EMIL. Smart chickie!

Chul Kyu arrives and EMIL is about to pull on his ear, but Hong Joo pipes up and declares that EMIL said that she should use the master bedroom, since she’s pregnant and all. EMIL’s changed a lot! Chul Kyu gives EMIL a thumbs up and declares that he told Hong Joo that she’d changed. He tells EMIL thank you and she replies with a smack. Then she looks at Hong Joo and can only smile because Hong Joo has her.

Mom’s talking to Se Yoon, trying to talk some sense into him. He says that he decided he cannot marry with eases, not knowing what kind of state he’s going to end up in. He doesn’t want to burden Chae Won like that. Mom scolds him for being pessimistic. Se Yoon’s face says that he’s not sure.

Chae Won’s working at the factory and has to stop because Se Yoon is being a butthead.

A chef arrives at the Noodle Factory from the International Conference of Asian Arts Culture. He also works for the Blue House. For those who don’t know, the Blue House is our White House, so this guy cooks for the President and heads of state. Their noodles have an excellent reputation and he wants them for his banquet. He also requests being able to see how the noodles are made. The Uncs are only to eager to show him the way.

Scenes of Se Yoon in physical therapy. Which looks pretty realistic. And I have to say, thank you, writers, for treating the coma like it actually took some toll on Se Yoon’s body. The therapist encourages him that even people who have been diagnosed as paraplegics, some of them actually walk again by doing their therapy. Se Yoon works really hard.

Chae Won stops by Se Yoon’s hospital room to find it empty. He’s gone on a trip but the nurse doesn’t know where. Chae Won calls him, only to find his phone off. And leaves no message.

EMIL’s at the doctor’s complaining about Hong Joo. The doctor’s sympathetic. On her way back from her shrink, she spots Chae Won and gets her attention. EMIL’s actually pleasant to Chae Won. Chae Won asks if she’s okay and as EMIL is standing there, she remembers all the times she was completely nasty to Chae Won, treating her worse than Hong Joo treats her. She declares that she understands how Chae Won felt. So she *apologizes.* Sincerely. And asks for forgiveness. Chae Won’s shocked and can’t say anything. Then EMIL gives her some money to go get something to eat. Hong Joo calls to yell at EMIL about picking up Coco from the vet. So EMIL hurries off.

Still downcast, Chae Won returns home. And no one is there. The phone rings and EUnc declares that there's a problem. All the noodles they supplied for that Asian Conference are spoiled! Food poisoning. She rushes over to the hotel.

Opera Man’s preparing for his latest appearance. Auntie encourages him not to cry like last time. Auntie references the baby and Opera Man takes courage to make his baby proud. And we’re treated to that same verse of Dooruh! Complete with flashing lights, decorations that look like cobwebs and lots of dancing girls. It appears that it was a contest because Opera Man won! He’s ecstatic and passes out. The rest of the family is really proud of him. And they’re dressed up. With Oehalmeoni in a hanbok. I’m beginning to really suspect something fishy. Why are they all dressed up to cook noodles? Bo Reum comes in to announce that Chae Won has arrived.

Chae Won asks a doorman for directions and he knows her name. She follows him, declaring that there’s no way the noodles are spoiled. He takes her to a room with Oma and Mom in hanboks and smiling. And there’s her wedding dress. Chae Won is being dense and can’t understand what’s going on. Mom declares that they’ve decided to have a small wedding ceremony with just the family. What about the groom, since Se Yoon won’t marry her because he can’t walk. Or can he? Chae Won mentions Se Yoon no walking and Mom tells her not to worry, because Se Yoon’s on board. Oma’s just smiling. Chae Won almost starts to cry being so happy.

And Chae Won makes a beautiful bride. Appa arrives and declares that she’s straight from heaven. She’s emotional. As I probably will be on my wedding day. Se Yoon enters, pushing his wheelchair with his mothers behind him. And Dad is there. Appa and Chae Won arrive. Finally the wedding! Appa passes Chae Won’s hand to Se Yoon. But he takes it back. Chae Won’s face freaks out a bit. But Se Yoon has his surprise. He stands on his own. Chae Won asks him what happened and he declares that he wanted to surprise her so he did an unbelievable amount of physical therapy. He says that it’s because of her that he could do it, because she held his hand until the end and didn’t give up on him. And the moms are really proud.

101 Year Anniversary of the Factory. Unlike last year, it is bustling with business. This really makes me want to eat Korean noodles. Oeharabeoji narrates about the noodles. And we see all of the family, who pose for a picture. Except Se Yoon. Which annoys me. He should be there too. But our last shot is the couple walking along the beach.
