Sung Joon looks at the notebook: Kim Hye Rin's secret notes. Hye Rin tells him it’s hers. She clarifies that the notebook he’s holding is hers. He says nothing, just looks at her and smiles.
Hye Jin enters and sees them meeting. She tries to run but gets caught in a crush of people. She hides behind a sign and sees that Sung Joon has brought Hye Rin a drink.
Hye Rin asks how Sung Joon knows her sister. Who is he? He replies that he’s her friend. She asks what kind of friend.
Hye Jin uses the sign she’s hiding behind to sneak out of the store, much to the complaint of one of the servers. She gets on her phone and places a call, worried that Hye Rin is going to screw everything up. I don’t’ think she will. She seems very savvy.
Sung Joon starts to answer what kind of friend he is, but he gets a call. It’s Hye Jin. She lies and says that Joo Young is looking for him. She said he should come right away. Sung Joon says goodbye to Hye Rin and leaves.
Hye Rin asks: did Hye Jin borrow money from that guy? Hye Jin is insulted. Then she yells at Hye Rin for talking to strangers. Hye Rin wants to know what she’s talking about. It was obvious that he knew her. Hye Jin tells Hye Rin to shut up. She pulls some money out of her pocket and shoves it in Hye Rin’s hand, telling her to go eat a hamburger and then go straight home! Hye Jin hurries out and Hye Rin is annoyed that Hye Jin only gave her a measly 5,000 Won.
Sung Joon startles Ra Ra when he shows up at her office. He says that he heard that she called for him. Ra Ra wonders if she did but it doesn’t sound right. Hye Jin arrives and bows deeply. She says that she made a mistake. And she would have gotten away with it if she hadn’t have done this, because it would have just looked like Ra Ra being spacy. Sung Joon practically glares at Hye Jin as he says that he made a mistake. He misunderstood. He apologizes. Ra Ra tells Hye Jin that she’s still… she makes a face and tells Hye Jin to please be more Most-like, ok?
Morning meeting. Sung Joon is not happy. Can’t any of them hand in a streamlined project proposal? Pan of the room and I’m cracking up at Shin Hyuk’s face. He says that every one of them, it’s like an elementary school essay and goes on forever. Hye Jin looks bad for all of them. He says that he thought everyone was a pro, but they’re all amateurs who don't even know about how 0.03 seconds decides for a magazine. If you can't attract the readers' attention with just one sentence or one picture, it becomes an unsalable magazine. He says that, from now on, the proposals will be the same as the meetings. He will only accept trim project proposals that take less than 3 minutes to read.
And for the 20th anniversary special publication, they should forget about everything they discussed thus far and start with a blank slate. The staff is shocked. Ah Reum makes the mistake of asking ‘why’ and saying that there were some points that were okay. He asks her under what standards were they okay? Ah Reum says that she thinks they're interesting– Sung Joon cuts her off to say “Okay” only has one meaning: "That which sells well". Is she confident that it will sell well if they go with this? Better than "New Look"?
Shin Hyuk speaks up, obliquely saying that Sung Joon is being too much. And also, if you keep saying things this way... how can they give an opinion in this brutal environment? He taps Poong Ho and asks if Poong Ho doesn’t think so. Poong Ho hits him with the stick to stop talking. Shin Hyuk suggests that they be comfortable with one another. Free. Wouldn’t that be nice? Free. Big smile to end. Sung Joon tells Shin Hyuk that if Shin Hyuk wants to be comfortable, why does he come to work? He should just stay home. And be "free." Wow, he just threatened to fire Shin Hyuk.
Shin Hyuk chuckles and says that Sung Joon’s words just now make him quite sad... but Sung Joon isn’t paying attention any more. He’s throwing all their proposals in the trash. He says that they should have another meeting once they have a new concept. He starts to leave but stops to ask if Joo Young has tried contacting James Taylor? She says that she did but his schedule is so packed… He starts to frown as she says that in situations like this, it seems unlikely to get a collaboration. Sung Joon remarks that he thinks he overrated her. She’s taken aback. Sung Joon announces that they have to go above and beyond the collaboration with James Taylor for their 20th anniversary special publication. He tells Joo Young that he’ll contact JT so she should keep her hands off it. He walks out. So he’s not just a jerk to Hye Jin.
Joo Young tells everyone not to even try to talk to her today. The group files out. Hye Jin asks herself what in the world happened in America for him to become like that? She shakes her head.
Sung Joon is driving in his car.
♫ Why do stars fall down from the sky ♫
♫ everytime you walk by? ♫
He gazes up at the blue sky and smiles.
♫ Just like me, they long to be ♫
♫ Close to you ♫
He rolls down his window and takes a picture of the sky.
♫ On the day that you were born, the angels got together ♫
Hye Jin is walking down the hall, arms full of files. She spots the sky and has to stop.
♫ They decided to create a dream come true ♫
She marvels at how awesome it looks.
♫ So, they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold, ♫
♫ And star-light in your eyes of blue ♫
She pulls out her phone and takes a picture. Shin Hyuk steps into the frame, blowing a big bubble as he does. He asks Jackson what she’s doing. She moans that he ruined her shot. He asks what she’s looking at like that? Is Iron Man flying around? He adds a bellow out for Iron Man that has me rolling. She smiles and says that it's just that... the sky is pretty. She goes to take another picture. He turns around and looks at what she’s seeing and a small smile crosses his lips as he sighs. Almost like it’s soothing, looking at things like this. She smiles and says that it’s so pretty!
He thinks about earlier. She’s riding on the bus, falling asleep. He sees her and smiles as he says that she’s twirling a sangmo ( hat with a long ribbon worn by farmer's band ).He was having a ball watching her head twirl around and whether she’d fall over. The Halmeoni gets on the bus and Hye Jin gives her the seat. This makes his smile change.
Back in the present, looking directly at Hye Jin, he says it’s true. It's pretty. And he makes me want to cry. That’s so sweet. She doesn’t notice.
Ha Ri is at work. A family is at the hotel restaurant, celebrating the mom’s birthday with a cake and singing. She remembers being out with her own mother and father, celebrating their anniversary. Ha Ri has to go outside. Dad calls. Thinking of how he slapped her, she doesn’t answer it. Then she gets the picture of the sky from Sung Joon. He asks about her hand and says that the sky was pretty. She smiles and looks up at it. She sighs and agrees that it’s totally pretty.
Later Ha Ri is out with convertible Oppa. He leans in so he can make out again. She asks him if he looked at the sky today? It was totally pretty. He leans back and tells her that she’s being cheesy. What's with the girly feels, so unlike you? She laughs and agrees. Why is she like this? She shakes her head to get rid of it and announces that she’s going now. He can’t believe she’s just leaving.
Hye Jin leaves the house with the garbage and Ha Ri grabs her in a bear hug. Did Hye Jin come out to greet her? Hye Jin says that she’s seeing off some trash. She looks at Ha Ri’s outfit and asks why it’s the size of a sock? People will talk. Ha Ri scoffs. It's her body, her life. Only what makes her happy matters. Who cares what people think? That's dumb.
Hye Jin leaves to go get trash bags and Ha Ri tags along. At a workout park, Hye Jin tells her about Sung Joon’s encounter with Hye Rin. Ha Ri declares that Hye Jin can't get caught! She absolutely can't get caught! Hye Jin agrees but asks why Ha Ri’s more worked up than her? Why *is* she more adamant? She’s starting to like Sung Joon. Not good. She says that she’s saying... If she gets caught... It'll be embarrassing for her.
Now on the slide, Hye Jin says that she was just going to not care but when it nearly happened she thought, 'What horrible humiliation is this?!' and her heart totally sank.
Now on the swings. Hye Jin says that she is herself, but how embarrassed will he be? If he knew that the intern he's always looking down on was his first love, Kim Hye Jin... It's terrible just thinking about it. Ha Ri asks what might have happened, if, from the beginning, she had gone and met him? What would've happened? Hye Jin thinks for a minute and says she doesn’t know. If she did and then they met as a boss and a junior staff, it might have been uncomfortable. Or awesome. She tells herself that it’s better she doesn't know.
Hye Jin asks why Ha Ri’s asking. Ha Ri says that she was how it would have been then. She tries to bring up the fact that she’s met Sung Joon again but only gets as far as saying his name. Hye Jin stops her and says they should stop talking about it. It's nothing good to keep talking about. He's looking down on her anyway, so it's best for her to stop being concerned about it. From now on, they shouldn’t talk about him anymore. Lets go! I have to go and study diplomacy. Ha Ri almost says something but doesn’t. She rushes up to Hye Jin and suggests that they go eat dukbokki. Hye Jin asks why so many people want to eat dukbokki with her. Ha Ri wants to know who else? Her tone asks if it’s a guy perhaps? Hye Jin replies that it’s just someone, a weird person. Ha Ri asks if he’s awful and Hye Jin says that he’s totally idiotic!
At home, Hye Jin heads into the bathroom. She gets a vision of Ra Ra, telling her that her looks are stilll… in a state of mess. Please, be more Most-like, okay? Hye Jin decides she’s going to try to be more Most-like. Switch to her trying to flat-iron and mousse her hair.
When she gets to work, she encounters Sung Joon, who says that she startled him. When she bows a hello, he looks at her badge and realizes that it’s Hye Jin. He asks if she that (her appearance) to be funny? He's not laughing or amused. She replies that the Editor-in-chief told her to be more Most-like so... He groans loudly and walks away. She can’t believe he just did that! If she came like this in order to be funny?! Him... He's no good. He grew up wrong. Unquestionably wrong.
Joon Woo comes running into the office – and Hye Jin’s appearance is now back to normal – yelling Daebok! Daebok! Daebok! Poong Ho says that it his news isn’t something daebok, Joon Woo’s going to get it. Joon Woo announces that Sung Joon finally got himself a meeting with James Taylor. Joo Young looks decidedly uncomfortable that he was able to do it when she couldn’t. Joon Woo says that he doesn't know how Sung Joon did it but, Taylor agreed to make a stopover in Korea. Poong Ho says that he heard that during exhibitions, Taylor’s schedule is so packed that he has no time. Deputy Editor in Chief is amazing.
The meeting’s just for an hour at the airport while Taylor’s transferring. Seol mutters that it’s impossible in just an hour. Sung Joon enters and declares that whether there is or isn't a way, he’ll handle it, so they shouldn’t worry about it. He tells Joo Young to hand over all the materials related to the James Taylor project. He tells at the Feature Fashion Assistants find him some more related materials to add ASAP. And someone needs to drive him there later. He needs to look at the materials while they get there. Shin Hyuk shrinks down and looks over at Hye Jin. She’s shrinking down behind a plant. He puts his key down on the table and tells whoever is driving him to meet him on the first floor at 2 o’clock.
Seol asks who’s going to drive Sung Joon there later? No one wants to. Shin Hyuk slides over and tells Jackson that she has a hole on the side, like it’s absolutely huge and horrifying. Immediately she raises her hand to look. He smiles broadly and points at her raised hand. Poong Ho tells Hye Jin that if she wants to go, she should. She finally realizes that her hand is raised. Shin Hyuk says that it wasn't a hole. He waves his hands in front of his face as he says that his eyesight these days... She can’t believe that Shin Hyuk could joke like that?! He asks how long she’s going to sneak around avoiding Deputy Editor in Chief? It's good! It's a good chance to become closer to him.
Seol runs up and puts the key in Hye Jin’s hand, saying that she’s more ambitious than she looks. Shin Hyuk gives her two thumbs up and tells everyone that they should clap for her. They all do as she cringes.
At 2, Sung Joon climbs into the backseat of the car and tells the driver to go. The car drives away. He looks up front and realizes that it’s Hye Jin. He asks why she’s there. She says that everyone was busy and she was the only one who could drive him. He asks if she drives well? He hasn’t seen her do anything well. She announces that she got a license with perfect scores in performance and writing tests.
As they drive, Hye Jin starts to feel really awkward. She notices his racket and loudly laughs as she asks if he plays tennis. No response from Sung Joon. Because he’s in the zone… the one where he’ll drink vase water instead of his coffee and walk into glass doors.
Later she says that she didn't know before, but James Taylor seems to be a very in demand artist. If the dress with a print of his paintings is in a magazine– Impatient, Sung Joon says that he wants to... read this on my way there. Can she cooperate?
He starts reading again. She asks if they’re going to Incheon Airport, right? No answer. Right? Incheon Airport? No answer. Later, they’re almost to the Incheon Airport. Sung Joon notices and freaks out. Why to Incheon? They’re supposed to go to Gimpo! He groans. She protests that she asked earlier and he didn't say anything so she thought it was Incheon! She says that she will turn the car around. Sung Joon groans and yells that once you're on this road, you have to go all the way to Incheon. He looks up on his tablet and finds out that there's a road to get out once you get through the toll gate. He tells her that they still have time, so go faster!
And there's a traffic jam. He calls Joo Young and tells her to get someone to Gimpo airport– But it’s not Joo Young but Ah Reum. Joo Young accidentally left her phone and went to a meeting. As he’s on the phone, Hye Jin looks out the window. She spots an old man with a scooter. She gets out and talks to him. Sung Joon notices and grumbles: what is she doing?! She runs up and tells him to quickly get out of the car! He protests. She reaches over, takes off his seatbelt, and pulls him out of the car. She pulls him over to the guy with the motorcycle. She tells Sung Joon to give her money. He thinks she’s crazy. She reaches into his pockets to pull out his wallet. More protesting from Sung Joon. She pays the ajusshi and says that Sung Joon has to get to Gimpo before 4 pm. Sung Joon protests but she shoves him on the motorcycle. She stuffs the helmet on his head and they drive off.
The motorcycle is able to drive through traffic.
Dad shows up at Ha Ri’s work.
Hye Jin finally arrives at the airport. Sung Joon exits, on the phone. He tells Caller that Taylor accepted the project. Hye Jin jumps up and down, ecstatic that it worked out. He looks at her and wordlessly tells her to zip it. he grabs the key out of her hand and walks over to the car. He starts to get in, but the smell – from the stuff that she bought – he doesn’t like it. She says that she will ventilate it and spray some deodorizer too.
Sung Joon rubs his forehead, frustrated. He looks at Hye Jin and asks what she does. Is she stupid? Or is she disabled somewhere? Is there anything that she can do right? If this project fails, is she going to take the responsibility? He screams at her, asking how she can make such an absurd mistake?
Hye Jin looks around, embarrassed. She says that she did ask him where they were going... He replies, asking if she knows what kind of people he thinks are really pathetic? People who are only hard-working but have nothing to be proud of. Like you. Wow. Wow. That really was uncalled for. Especially because her quick thinking saved his behind. After a moment, she opens up the back and pulls the stuff out of the car. She says that she’ll figure out how to get back herself. He can go first. She walks away without closing the door. Sung Joon groans, frustrated.
He gets out and shuts the back door. This gets Hye Jin to stop. She runs back and stops him from closing the front door. She exhales for courage and says, “How about me telling you what kind of a person I hate the most?” He sighs and looks in front of him. She continues, regardless: Someone who doesn't listen to others, who looks down on people who are not as skilled as he is. Like you, Deputy-Chief-Editor. He looks up at her. She says that she asked him quite a few times "Is it Incheon Airport?" but the one who didn't listen or reply to me is you. So if you hadn't disregarded me and belittled me every chance you got, this wouldn't have happened… I felt like– She pauses for a breath and says that she felt like she must tell him that. She slams his door shut and walks away. He drives off. And I am a little ticked at Sung Joon right now.
After he’s gone, she asks outloud why they met again… This idiot (Shin Hyuk) he shouldn't have played this joke on her. Man at the airport asks how much the steamed rice is. She protests that she’s not selling it, but then reconsiders quickly.
Awkward meal between Ha Ri and her Dad. Small talk. He apologizes for ‘that day.’ She nods and says that he is, of course, sorry for that day. His phone rings. It’s That Witch. Ha Ri asks why Dad didn’t tell her that he was with Ha Ri? He says that it would seem weird and cause misunderstandings. She says that it wouldn’t… if they were a ‘real’ family. Dad asks why Ha Ri doesn’t just call That Witch and apologize? Ha Ri replies that she should attend preschool again. They taught her that the person who is wrong first should apologize. Seems like she learnt it wrong. Dad says that That Witch is a poor woman. She has lots of wounds, so Ha Ri should open her heart to That Witch first–
Obviously hurt, Ha Ri stands and says that she should leave now. Dad, he can eat with people who he thinks are family members... Happily... He says her name but she walks away. And she should. He’s being a real loser.
Hye Jin walks inside. A man thanks her for the bread. She sends Ha Ri a text, saying that she’s not in a good mood. Does she want to go drink with her? She goes outside and it’s raining. She tells the rain thanks. She pulls out The Umbrella as Sung Joon exits. He balks at walking in the rain. They look at each other but don’t say anything. She finally opens the umbrella – the one he bought her – and he sees the inside. It’s the puzzle picture. She nods at him politely and leaves. He yells after her (about the umbrella), but she doesn’t hear him.
As she walks away, she notices the inside and remembers what he said: Use it for avoiding the thing you hate. She turns around to look at him but he’s walked back inside. As she starts to walk away, he stops and looks back at her. Then he walks away, too.
She ends up at a pojangmacha.
Ha Ri is at a gym, swimming laps and trying not to cry. She ends up stopping, curling up in a ball and sinking to the bottom of the pool. She stays that way and cries there. It’s heart breaking. As she leaves the gym, she runs into Sung Joon. He’s just joined her gym. She doesn’t meet his eyes as they talk and she leaves quickly. He follows her and tells her to get into his car and hang with him a bit. She tries to refuse, but he’s so friendly as he insists that she quickly, quickly, quickly gets in. She relents.
Now driving, he asks what they should do. Just take a drive? He notices that she’s uncomfortable but he thinks it’s just the speedminton racket.
Shin Hyuk is walking, channeling Gene Kelly.

He stops, spotting something, and giggles. Mischief face. He didn’t have to say it. He spotted Jackson.
She’s finished off her second bottle of Soju and has started slurring her words. She asks for ajumma to bring her another bottle. He enters and requests another glass, please. He sits, calls her ‘Jackson,’ and gives her one of his Cheshire grins. She asks who told him to sit? Does he know what happened to her earlier because of him? His eyebrows raise, asking ‘what?’ She tells him to go sit somewhere else. Shoo! Shoo!
Ajumma arrives with the soju and he pleasantly orders some chicken feet. She whines at him to leave and she doesn't eat chicken feet. He acts surprised: Really? She should have told him sooner. He turns to the ajumma and asks is she could give them a lot of chicken feet? Piled up, please? He looks back at Hye Jin and repeats that: Piled up. Does he just intentionally do stuff to bug her?
Sung Joon and Ha Ri end up in the park, playing speedminton. Ha Ri is not very good. She’s playing in a skirt, after all. But it helps her feel better. She protests that she’s at a disadvantage. He walks over and ties his overcoat around her waist. Slow motion so it’s meaningful! Ha Ri’s face says that she feels something. They start playing again.
Eventually, they stop to drink something. He tells Ha Ri that she is surprisingly competitive. She was biting her teeth down real hard while she was playing. She responds, telling him he’s one to talk.
As they laugh, he mentions that he met her younger sister. Immediately, Ha Ri isn’t smiling anymore. Ha Ri lies and says that Hye Rin mentioned it. He tells her that Hye Rin really looks like her when she was young. Ha Ri smiles slightly. She resembles her old self a lot, doesn't she? Sung Joon suggests that the three of them eat together sometime? Ha Ri agrees – but her voice and face she really doesn’t want to.
There’s a pause and he asks why she cried earlier. Her face looked like she cried. She doesn’t say anything. He asks if this is something he shouldn't ask about? She tries to sound like it wasn’t anything severe and says that some things were just bothering her. Nothing much. Wow, if you’re going to like him, you should at least tell him the truth about this sort of thing. Even though it could expose your lie, that’s even something bigger to hide. Sung Joon smiles and says that if it's like that, then he’s relieved. Ha Ri glances over at him and feels bad.
A family (parents and small child) walk by. I’m sure they’re both thinking about their missing mom. Ha Ri asks when Sung Joon thinks about his mom the most. He asks why she’s is asking about Oma all of a sudden? She lies and says that it was because of what he said when they went to eat Gomtang. She puts her hand to her mouth, like she’s committed a social infraction, and asks if this is something she shouldn't ask about? He laughs and says that it isn’t. He sighs and says that he’s not sure. If he has to say one… When she would cut his nails for him? He’s left-handed, so he’s really bad at cutting his left hand’s fingernails. He always hurt himself, so Oma always cut them for him.
Ha Ri says that not having a mom by his side... It sounds really difficult. He must have had a hard time when he was young. He says that he thinks he did his best to bear it. He leans in like he’s telling a secret and says that a girl named Kim Hye Jin, a really nice girl, was with him at that time. He chuckles and Ha Ri’s smile is a little sad.

She slurs that she needs to drink because of the crazy Joon, that son of a bitch. She starts to call for the ajumma again, but he grabs her wrist and makes her sit. He tells Jackson that she’s drunk. He wants to go. She yells back that she’s not drunk.
After a pause, she admits that she is totally drunk. And she totally had me rolling how she said it – deep and breathy. She puts her index finger up to her mouth – but misses – and shushes him, saying that it’s a secret. He puts up his index finger to mirror her. She starts to laugh. He sarcastically laughs and says, “Sure, it is. Let's go.” He looks kind of annoyed. And before he was having so much fun.
Hye Jin acts like a two-year-old, throwing a fit, kicking her legs, ask she asks who Sung Joon thinks he is to always look down on her? She whimpers and asks since when does he think he was all that smart? She declares that she’s going to tell him everything! Shin Hyuk asks what she means ‘tell him everything’? She’s saying it as if she knew Deputy-Chief-Editor from before. She yells that it's true that she knew him. He’s right! He cringes at the smell of her breath.
She’s about to say… and then she falls backward. Cringing, shocked face from Shin Hyuk. They start walking and he begs her to tell him where her house is. She tells him that she’ll go by herself! She stumbles forward and leans over, like she’s trying not to fall or throw up. His hands are up to catch her if she does (fall, that is). She accuses him of pushing her a couple of times (when she loses balance). Then she whimpers and says that Sung Joon is a fatty and a coward! He doesn't even know who she is! She sinks to the ground. Shin Hyuk squats next to her.
Hye Jin says that she’s just going to spill everything out. Everything! She looks for her phone. It’s not in her shoes. She looks at Shin Hyuk – who definitely doesn’t look like he’s having fun any more, more like he’s annoyed that she got this drunk but not that he’s having to take care of her. She grabs her purse and yanks it off of him, causing him to fall over. She dumps its contents onto the ground and starts calling to her phone. Shin Hyuk mutters that this is driving him crazy, ugh.

She bites her lips and says that... truthfully… she has a man she’s going to marry. Sung Joon’s shocked face with no smile comes back. She says that that guy doesn't like her seeing other guys. Not even childhood friends. So, she won't be able to see him anymore.
Reversing sound and Sung Joon asks when she’s going to buy him dinner? So that wasn’t real at all. She looks confused. He asks if she’s going to break her promise after losing the game? Next day, Ha Ri is looking through her closet, trying to decide what to wear. She pulls out one of her short skirts but then thinks about Sung Joon telling her to wear something warm. Hye Jin gets up and runs for the bathroom, where she throws up. Ha Ri comes in and pats her on the back as she asks how much Hye Jin had to drink. Hye Jin doesn’t remember. Hye Jin throws up again, which makes Ha Ri gag, but she hangs in there.
Ha Ri asks who the guy was who carried her on his back yesterday? We missed the skinship! I protest! Hye Jin asks why carried her and then remembers that it was the idiot reporter!
Hye Jin starts chugging water. Ha Ri tells her that she was raising hell last night so if her throat didn't hurt, that would be more strange.
Flashback to a very drunk Hye Jin. A neighbor is yelling at Hye Jin to come to her senses as Ha Ri hurries out of the house to help. Neighbor says that it's a mess! She threw up all over the guy's clothes. He's washing up at the store right now. View if Shin Hyuk is blocked by the curtain. Ha Ri yells into him, asking if he’s okay. Hye Jin fights to lie down on the ground. Ha Ri yells into Shin Hyuk a thank you for for bringing our Hye Jin! Her condition isn't very good, they'll go up first.
Back to present. Hye Jin is shocked that she did that! She slaps her head and calls herself a crazy woman. Ha Ri has to hurry and leave. Hye Jin notices Ha Ri’s clothes and asks if the Sun rose from the west? Ha Ri never gave up on mini skirts during the winters, what's with the long pants? Ha Ri answers that she just feels like wearing pants today. She tells Hye Jin to remember to eat Haejangguk. Ha Ri leaves and Hye Jin wonders why she doesn’t remember anything? Is she getting too old? Then she goes to throw up again.
A very hung over Hye Jin walks to work. Her mother calls. Mom notices the sound of her voice and says that Hye Jin must have been drinking. She immediately denies it. She asks why Mom is calling. Mom wants her to bring Ha Ri to eat on the weekend. They should have an employment party since Hye Jin got hired. She wants to show her cooking skills after a long time. Mom laughs. Hye Jin begs her *not* to show her and just order food. Mom says that the dress code will be red.
Hye Jin remembers about her baggy pants, the ones she used to wear; are they still at home? Her current pants have a hole. She tells Mom again that she didn't drink! She hangs up.
Hye Jin looks at her call history and sees that she called Sung Joon. She immediately freaks out – as she should – since she can’t remember what she said. She commands herself to remember. She remembers saying that she’s the Kim Hye Jin. She starts to scream but stifles it with her hand. Shin Hyuk walks up and puts his hand on her shoulder, pointing his index finger forward. She turns around to look at him – so it looks like he’s poking her cheek. Not smiling – like he’s tired – he tells the “Drunkard” that it's green light. He starts walking.
She hurries after him. He looks super tired. She asks if he saw her calling Sung Joon the night before. He answers, “Maybe.” She asks what she said and if he heard all of it. He says that he feels like he heard everything, but it also feels like he didn't. Starting to become frantic, she asks if he heard it or not. Grabbing his stomach, he says that he’s not sure. He can't remember because he’s so hungry... He sees food and his eyes pop open. Heh. He says that he thinks he’ll remember if he eats one of these. Immediately, Hye Jin orders a kimbap. Shin Hyuk says that it has to be two and so she orders it. As Hye Jin pulls him away, he tells the vendor to have a nice day. Which makes me chuckle.
So Hye Jin wants to know what she said. Shin Hyuk asks if, as a citizen of a country of courteous people, isn't it right to apologize first? After she threw up on a person's clothes! Indignant Shin Hyuk face over being vomited on. Hye Jin profusely apologizes. What did she tell the Deputy Chief Editor? Shin Hyuk sighs and says that he can't even imagine Jackson and Deputy-Chief-Editor having that kind of relationship.
Hye Jin stops, mortified that she spilled the beans. Shin Hyuk takes a few more steps and then realizes she’s stopped. He spins around to look at her. He comes over and waves the kimbap in her face, telling Jackson to come to her senses! He asks why she’s acting like a person who lost her country? She shouldn’t worry; she didn't say much. That gets a “Really??”
Flashback to Shin Hyuk clucking at her as he picks up the contents of her purse. Hye Jin says that she’s the Kim Hye Jin. Kim Hye Jin! She said she’s Kim Hye Jin, you dog-like jerk! Shin Hyuk looks at her shocked and a little concerned. Dog-like? Jackson! His voice! Heh.
Present. Shin Hyuk says that he thought she’d say other things, so he grabbed her phone from her. It was just "you dog-like jerk!" And his imitation of her drunk is hysterical. That's as far as he heard. She clarifies that she didn’t say anything else. He repeats the drunk “You dog-like jerk!” and says that the call ended there. Hye Jin sighs loudly with relief.
Shin Hyuk looks at her, curious, and asks what else she would have said? Is there something that would've made her uncomfortable? An eyebrow raise to encourage information. She says that it’s because he gets mad all the time. Shin Hyuk acts like he buys that answer. But he totally doesn’t. He knows there’s something now. And given that he’s very curious about her, he’s going to pay attention and figure it out.
Shin Hyuk groans that he missed the chance! He should have filmed her and teased her all time. He is totally doing this so she won’t know that he’s suspicious now. He tells her that this incident is worth 10 meals to buy for him. She knows that, right? She answers that she’s not sure. She doesn't remember anything that happened yesterday. She walks off. He follows after her, protesting that she’s pretend not to know anything! He demands that she buy him 10 meals! Buy him one meal! Buy him one meal!
Sung Joon has entered the building and watches Shin Hyuk harass her as they head up to work. He thinks back to the night before, when she called him a dog-like jerk! That’s what he asked her to repeat. And it wasn’t anything significant. Darn. He can’t believe she just called him a bastard. He starts to yell at her, but can hear her fighting with Shin Hyuk over the phone.
Sung Joon enters The Most office. Hye Jin sees him and dives under her desk. Ra Ra enters and gleefully greets Sung Joon with several European air kisses. She tells him that he’s worked hard and then has everyone clap for him. Ra Ra proposes they have a party that night. Sung Joon says that he has a lot of work so he can’t, but Ra Ra isn’t going to take ‘no’ for an answer. She has something that she must say later. Sung Joon must absolutomente participate, okay? Sung Joon starts to tell her to just say it now, but she tells the group that no one can drop out or she will nag them. Especially, our cutie, cutie, cutie patootie Joon. He absolutely has to go! He smiles and says, “Yes, ma’am!”
Seol takes this as the sign that Joon Woo is the Chairman’s son. She decides to focus on him starting from today.
Hye Jin is trying to hide her face with a folder. Joo Young holds a flash drive in front of her face and orders her to pint the files in it and give them to Deputy-Chief-Editor. She’ll know what it is when you see it. Hye Jin stresses. Sheepishly she enters Sung Joon’s office and bows as she holds out the folder. He doesn’t look at her, but tells her to leave it here and go.
She starts to leave but then starts to bring up the night before. He interrupts and says that the night before, he thinks she just made a mistake while she was drunk. He’ll pretend nothing happened. She’s surprised, but thanks him and starts to leave. He speaks again, so she stops, and he says that the incident during the daytime... they should pretend that never happened as well. What does that mean? Is that an apology? Or telling her that he’s just going to overlook how she yelled at him? It’s really coming across not like he got humbled in the slightest. I sigh and shake my head. She says, “yes,” and goes back to her desk.
As he looks at her, he thinks about earlier at the café where he buys his daily coffee. Server asks if he didn't hear again? This gets his attention. She laughs and says that since he comes there every day, she’s starting to get a grasp of it. When he’s looking at something, he can't hear anything when someone is saying something to him. She gives him a thumbs up and props for his concentration. Then he thinks about Hye Jin yelling at him that she asked several times, if Incheon airport is correct, but it was him who wasn't answering or listening to her! His face says that he’s bothered.
Sung Joon looks over at Hye Jin, who is wondering what's up with Crazy Joon, all of a sudden? She looks in his direction and his eyebrows pop upward because she sees him looking at her. She quickly turns back to her and, unsettled, he makes the wall go dark.
The Most Party. Sung Joon looks completely uncomfortable. Sung Joon and Shin Hyuk are on either side of Ra Ra. Seol is sitting next to Joon Woo, trying to feed him watermelon. Joo Young and Poong Ho look a little familiar. Ra Ra looks and sees that Sung Joon isn’t drinking. She says something about it and he answers that he still has things to take care of. He’s leaving soon. He brings up that she has to say something regarding work? Shin Hyuk is obliquely paying attention. Another reason why I think he’s her nephew. Ra Ra asks him if he thinks she’s the type of person to talk about work there? She doesn't even do that on normal days. She thought it would make him come. She cackles loudly, which gets everyone’s attention.
Sung Joon is not amused and announces that he will get going now. Ra Ra stops him and says that that's a foul! If he doesn't drink, he can't go. Everyone clamors that he has to drink it! Dancing by Joon Woo and Shin Hyuk as they chant that the drink is going in, jook jook! Ra Ra shushes them and proposes that they take a love shot. Humorlessly, Sung Joon grabs the glass out of his hand and chugs it, to gasps from the group. They clap. He bows and leaves. Hye Jin mutters to herself that Sung Joon seems like he can drink quite well.
Hye Jin gets a call from Ha Ri and steps out. Shin Hyuk, who has been watching her, is curious. He looks over at the spot where Sung Joon was and then back at where she just left. Outside, she tells Ha Ri that she has a group dinner. Shin Hyuk sneaks up behind her and scares her. She starts to explain about her call from Ha Ri when Sung Joon suddenly falls face-first on the ground. They quickly run over to him. As Hye Jin calls out “Deputy Chief Editor!” Shin Hyuk puts his finger in front of Sung Joon’s mouth. His raised eyebrow is hysterical. He sighs with relief that Sung Joon is still breathing. He smacks Sung Joon on the butt several times, to no effect.
Shin Hyuk ends up giving Sung Joon a piggyback home. Wrong kind of skinship! When they get to his door, Hye Jin can’t seem to get the card to work on the door. Shin Hyuk grunts from Sung Joon’s weight and gasps as he asks if she thinks the door will open itself if she only taps the door key? Hehe. Inside, they dump Sung Joon on the sofa, where he snores. Shin Hyuk pants and stays on the sofa. She tells him they should quickly leave, but he wants a glass of water. He throws his own little fit to get the water. In the fridge are tons of bottles of water. But no food. This sobers Hye Jin. Is this how he stays thin? By not eating?
Shin Hyuk walks away from the building, irked. He even barks his frustration. He reaches into his pocket and realizes that he still has Sung Joon’s key card. He sighs but decides to give it to Sung Joon later. He falls in behind a deep-in-thought Hye Jin. And the way he’s walking is cracking me up. She’s thinking about how Sung Joon only has bottled water in the fridge. What does the gourmand eat these days to live?
Shin Hyuk suddenly gives her a knee push and asks what she’s thinking about like that. He smiles at her. Irked, she ‘pleasantly’ tells him not to joke around. She goes back to her thoughts: she hasn’t seen him having anything other than coffee. What did he have for lunch? And Shin Hyuk is doing his weird walk behind her again. She asks herself why she’s worrying about it? Sung Joon can eat or starve.
Shin Hyuk does another knee push – which makes her almost fall over – and asks what she’s thinking about, with a big grin on his face. She screams at him, “Ah, seriously! Please!” which startles him. Reigning it in a little, she asks why he jokes around all day? He even made her go to the airport by joking unnecessarily! Does she look that easy? Uncomfortable – and not playful at all – he apologizes and says that he think of her as his younger sister. She spits back that she doesn't think of him as an oppa. He says that if it made her feel bad, he apologizes. He just did it because she seems like his real younger sister. He chuckles uncomfortably. She says that if that’s the case, don’t do it to her and mess around with his younger sister. Then, it's fine.
She starts to walk away when Shin Hyuk says that she died. When she was six years old. Hye Jin is horrified, now, of how mean she just was. She turns around to look at him. He sighs and tries to be jovial again as he says that he thinks he just said some useless thing. He smiles like it’s no big deal. He says that he’ll go now and see her tomorrow. He pats her arm and goes, even though she tells him to wait. She is horrified at what just happened. And watching sad Shin Hyuk walk away is heart breaking. She hunts for her phone to quickly apologize and then realizes that she left it up on Sung Joon’s counter. Which makes her freak because there’s a lot of pictures in there that she took with Ha Ri!
She runs upstairs and tries to remember the code to get into his apartment. She remembers that he’s left-handed, which helps her figure out his code: 0813. She quietly sneaks in to get her phone, and almost breaks a glass.
Hye Rin is killing time and remembers about Sung Joon. She wonders how Hye Jin knows such a normal person. She smiles and says that it’s accepted for now! Uh-oh. That’s trouble.
Hye Jin’s VO says that When A and B, who didn't know each others' existence, got to meet, an intersection is created in between the two people. Ha Ri goes to take the client in room 2024 his mp3 player. A man in a grey hoodie and old-man sandles is shuffling down the hall. VO: And that intersection sometimes, in an unexpected time...
Ha Ri has spotted him. She hurries over to him and tells him that he can't come in there like this! Her voice is both alarmed and slightly horrified. We don’t see his face, but he’s eating that sausage that Shin Hyuk likes to eat. She asks how he got in without a card? She starts pulling on him as she tells him to get out quickly before the clients see.
She’s interrupted by the Manager, who quickly apologizes to their guest. Manager tells her to quickly apologize. He's the long term guest in the suite room number 2024. Ha Ri starts to ask how can a homeless person... but stops. And Shin Hyuk is glaring at her, with that sausage sticking out of his mouth. Manager makes a meaningful face.
Ha Ri cringes and bows deeply as she apologizes. He says that since he has a tendency to have a very big heart, he just accepts things as they are. He gives a smile (with a hint of condescension in it). She stutters and apologizes again and holds out his mp3 player. He thanks her and then says that her voice seems familiar. Puzzled, he tells her that he will see her around.
VO says that some intersections in certain times are not seen with our eyes.
Ha Ri watches him go and wonders about Shin Hyuk.
In his suite, Shin Hyuk drinks a bottle of water and looks out at the city.
VO says that the fact that his mere existence will make things more complicated in the future, we couldn’t have even predicted it. Is she talking about him being the nephew – which I think the long-term stay at a hotel confirms it – or complicating Ha Ri’s life? Hehe.
In Sung Joon’s apartment, Hye Jin approaches the puzzle. She looks over at the sleeping Sung Joon. She remembers him mentioning the puzzle during his meeting with Ha Ri. She says to herself that the thing that he said that he found that time was... She smiles and reaches in to touch the puzzle.
Only to have Sung Joon walk up and ask what she’s doing and why she’s there. This startles her and she falls forward, knocking the puzzle over so it, and its frame, shatter on the floor. She turns around, shocked that he’s awake. She steps backward and is about to fully step on the glass. Sung Joon reaches forward and pulls her towards him, saving her from the glass. Her eyes bulge from the close contact and the episode ends.
Thoughts
Well, after talking on the phone and almost meeting when he brought Hye Jin home, Shin Hyuk and Ha Ri have met (finally). He’s a long-term guest at the hotel that she works at, and a wealthy one, at that, given the way that the manager was quick to grovel. While the money part points to him being Ra Ra’s nephew, the fact that he doesn’t live at home, when Ra Ra said that her nephew did, makes me think it’s not him. And Ra Ra’s nephew could turn out to be someone we don’t even know. And I really wish I spoke Korean, because I’m wondering if Seol only assumed it was a man; the Korean word for nephew/niece is the same. Also, it could be someone we don’t see typically, too.
Between episode 3 and 4, I was thinking that maybe the writers have decided to buck the trope and the first leads won’t end up with each other but with the second leads, but at the conclusion of this episode, with Hye Jin’s VO that the fact that Shin Hyuk’s mere existence will make things more complicated in the future, in ways they couldn’t even predict, I’m less inclined to think so, UNLESS… Shin Hyuk turns out to be related to Ha Ri in some way.
But that was quite a reveal – Hye Jin reminds him of his dead sister. It would explain all the looks that he’s been giving her, why she makes him smile, and how he’s been acting. It’s very much how an older brother would torment a younger sister. I still think there’s potential for love there (It’s – her face/person – is pretty), but it seems more that they’re going for the friendship/oppa angle.
I thought I would organize my other thoughts according to character:
Sung Joon
Sung Joon continued to be a jerk at work. He threw out everything that they’d worked on so far. (And I really liked the retrospectives idea, but nope.) Also, he belittled everyone about their abilities, calling them elementary school children. Then, when Shin Hyuk spoke up about the toxic environment that Sung Joon is creating, Sung Joon basically threatened to fire him, too. He pretty much calls Joo Young incompetent, since she can’t get a hold of the ‘It’ artist of the day, and after that, he takes over the project in a most demeaning way. She’s right under him in the command structure and he didn’t give her the respect she deserves (as the Fashion Director or as his elder).
On top of this, he has to be tricked into going to a staff dinner, which is really rude to his workers, and then when he’s there, he refuses to drink with them. It’s like he wants nothing to do with them, cares nothing about them, but just wants their output. Given the revelation that he has just water in his fridge, I wonder if his reluctance has more to do with something related to his weight (the bad thing that Hye Jin wonders about) and less to do with the socializing aspect. And he might not understand the team-building mentality behind staff dinners.
Most of all he was a jerk to Hye Jin: When she tried to do her hair and makeup, he insults her by asking if it’s a joke. He’s rude and impatient when she’s being his chauffeur. He ignores her when she tries to confirm the correct airport and then is obnoxious when he discovers that they’ve gone to the wrong one (he was at fault for not supplying that information from the moment he got in the car). After her quick thinking gets him the transportation to the right airport, he doesn't thank her Jin for saving the day but instead rips her a new one for the mix-up (which is his fault). He really goes too far when he calls her pathetic because she’s only hard-working with nothing to show for it. And then he leaves her at the airport instead giving her a ride back.
As I watched him be revolting in his behavior, I couldn't help but think of how it was like Episode 4 of 'Warm and Cozy' where the hero, Gun Woo, was really despicable, too, and it gave me hope that this is the start of the upswing. I don’t know if this is part of Sung Joon’s journey, to learn how to be a better boss, but if he keeps going the way he's going, he's going to drive everyone to the point of quitting. And unlike them trying to get a job after The Most folds, they are still marketable because The Most is extremely profitable worldwide.
I think he might be starting to realize that his actions are just really major jerkiness rather than good management tactics, because the barista (someone not essential to his world) mentioned how he becomes oblivious to everything when he’s reading his tablet. This is someone who doesn't have an agenda and will lose nothing if he disregards her, so it's more credible. Thinking about Hye Jin yelling at him about ignoring her, he actually looked like it bothered him. So hopefully, his treatment of her will get better (although he did just find her uninvited in his apartment).
And this not listening to people nor trusting them actually seems to be a pattern with him. (Again, is it related to something that happened in the States?) Shin Hyuk tells him that the office climate that he’s creating is toxic and Sung Joon threatens to fire him. Joo Young didn’t get the job done the way he wanted, so he just took the project. He didn't listen to Hye Jin, either when she asked about the airport or when she yelled at him for not listening to him, even though he was responsible. He might be open and vulnerable with Ha Ri, but that's only because he thinks she's already trustworthy.
As speaking of his relationship with Ha Ri, it was nice to see him let his nice guy out. The nice guy can be quite charming, which is a sharp contrast to the Sung Joon we've been mostly subjected to. Playing speedmitton brought them closer and his kind, sincerity is really starting to affect her.
Other miscellaneous bits:
- He met Hye Jin’s sister and gave Hye Rin his card, which is going to complicate things later.
- He is good at his job because he was able to get Taylor to agree to meet during a layover and then agree to his proposal in less than an hour.
- He is left-handed, which makes trimming his fingernails difficult. The code for his door is International Left-handers’ Day (0813).
- His reaction to the alcohol shows that he doesn’t have any tolerance for alcohol.
- He saw that Hye Jin has an umbrella similar to the one he gave Ha Ri.
- Even though she was in his apartment inivited, he saved Hye Jin from cutting up her feet on the shattered glass.
One of the biggest things I think that happened in this episode is that Hye Jin finally started showing a backbone when people abuse her. It's not that she didn't have one, but from the beginning of the series, when it comes to how people treat her because she's 'not pretty,' she pretty much rolls over and lets them kick her. I mean, she got out of the elevator instead of the pretty girl, she switched tables with another waitress because they wanted the pretty girl, she laughed along with Manager as he explained that he hired her because she wasn't pretty. I wouldn't have done any of those things.
Sung Joon has already told her several times that he doesn't think she's pretty. But this week, she didn't just let him get away with it. She stuck for herself and yelled at him back. I've been waiting for her to stop being so scared of upsetting him and just let him have it, and she made movement in that direction this episode. The only way that he's going to become interested is if he respects her and that's only going to happen if she stops letting him treat her badly.
One thing I appreciate about her is that she is a genuinely nice, sincere person. She gives halmeonis her seat on the bus, she takes care of her best friend, she feels badly when she does something cruel. She takes joy in the little things, like the blue sky. She tries to be the best employee possible, even if it means going out way of her comfort zone and trying something new with her hair and makeup. She doesn't hold onto bitterness when people are mean to her; her ire at Sung Joon might be an exception, but that's only because it's a daily, multiple occurence.
And speaking of Sung Joon, this episode showed how she continues to be Sung Joon’s friend despite how he treats her. For all her blustering, she’s still looking out for him.
- With all the crappy things he’s done to her, now she says that she doesn’t want to tell to save him the embarrassment of knowing how demeaning he was to her.
- She feels bad for how he’s being a jerk to his staff.
- She rebukes him not just for how he treats her, but how he’s treating everybody – because she knew he needed to hear it.
- She wonders what happened to him that made him act like this at work, like he's saveable and her friend is in there, somewhere.
- She’s worrying over the lack of food in his apartment and what it might mean.
- She got him back to his apartment after he passed out instead of just leaving him there.
Other tidbits:
- She knows Sung Joon well enough to be able to guess his door pass code.
- She has an adversarial relationship with her sister. They hinted at it when we first met Hye Rin, but this episode shows just how much they fight with each other.
- She discovered that the umbrella he gave her was even more meaningful; the 'Danse à la Campagne' was on the inside.
- She also discovered that Their Puzzle has been framed by Sung Joon and sitting in his apartment. And then she knocked the frame over when she was startled by Sung Joon, causing it to shatter.
Starting with last episode and continuing in this one, we get a clue as to why Ha Ri is the way she is. Her mother has died, presumably in her childhood because of the animosity between her and her stepmother (That Witch) doesn't normally sprout like that when your dad remarries as an adult. That Witch is petty and jealous, which is why she digs at Ha Ri all the time. And Ha Ri's father has chosen his new wife and that family over her. That can make you feel lonely like nothing else. Which is why I think she doesn't believe in love, that she can be loved, and why she's attracted to and is going to fall for Sung Joon. He already looks at her like he adores her (even if it is for someone else) and nothing's more attractive than that.
She already is showing signs for falling for him:
- Even though she could have told him several times that it's a lie, who her identity is, she hasn't. She keeps rationalizing why it's better to wait so that she can spend more time with him.
- In order to keep up that relationship, she also hasn't told Hye Jin that she's reconnected with him after that initial meeting.
- His text with the picture of the sky made her feel better.
- She was thinking about it later, while out on a date with someone else.
- Playing speedmitton with him helped her feel better after being rejected by her father.
- She got a weird look on her face when he wrapped his overcoat around her waist.
- She got sadder when she was reminded that she is lying about being Hye Jin.
- After he said something about her short skirt (staying warm), she chose to wear pants, which she never does (and after Hye Jin gave her a hard time about it and her reply was: my skirt, my life)
Up to this point, Shin Hyuk has been little more than a goofball editor who wears leather and rides a motorcycle. But this episode really made me believe that his schleppy appearance and goofball persona is a disguise:
- He has money. He's is a long-term resident at a *nice,* upscale hotel and is considered a special guest.
- He’s versed in poetry, Western musicals (Singing in the Rain) and lesser-known Western philosophers. That comes with education, a good education, which you don't get without living in an area of town with good schools or your parents pay to send you to one.
- He’s brave enough to speak up/stand up to Sung Joon during one of his the staff meetings. Someone who *needs* their job wouldn't want to rock the boat and Sung Joon is scary on top of it. But Shin Hyuk isn't scared.
- He notices things that others might overlook. He's noticed a lot about Hye Jin that no one else has. Which makes me think that he acts like a schlep so that people will let their guard around him, so he can see what they might not show to someone 'impressive.'
- His younger sister died when she was 6 years old. Losing a sibling when you're young is *hard.* There's no hint as to how/why, just that she died. It seems like he was close to her, because of the way that he latched onto the woman who reminded him of her.
- He lives alone in a hotel, rather than with a family. That says to me that he's estranged from them, because, unlike the West, people don't usually leave home when they turn 18.
- He doesn’t think her hair is terrible and enjoyed watching it swirl like a sangmo.
- He appreciated that she gave up her seat for a halmeoni.
- Seeing her joy over something simple like the sky helped him to relax some.
- He looked at her smiling face and said that it (and she) was pretty. Not the sky but her. (Definitely a swoon-worthy moment.)
- He tricked Hye Jin into driving Sung Joon so that she could get over being nervous around him.
- He stuck around when she was drunk and followed her to make sure she got home.
- He took her handphone before she said something really bad to Sung Joon (that might cost her her job).
- He’s handy for drunken piggybacks: first Hye Jin and then Sung Joon.
- Due to Hye Jin’s drunken rambling, he knows that there’s more to her relationship with Sung Joon than she’s saying. (Which deepens the mystery of why Jackson is so nervous around him.)
