Empress Ki Episode 5 Recap

Episode starts with Seung Nyang sleeping. She wakes to find Ta Hwan gone. So she freaks out and goes running through the forest, screaming for him. She finds him caught in a trap, hanging from a tree by his foot. She’s pissed that he wandered off. He begs her to let him down. So, she does, by cutting the rope so he plops to the ground. Then she decides to tie him up and tie the rope to her waist.

As they walk, Seung Nyang periodically grabs her wounded arm. Which, I’m sure is eventually going to become infected and lead to a fever. Because that’s more dramatic. And I guess, true to life, since she hasn’t had the opportunity to clean it… Ta Hwan wants her to untie him. She just ignores his protests. He doesn’t want to go to Kaegyong, convinced that Ki Se will be there, waiting to kill them. Seung Nyang says that Wang Yoo will protect them, and Ta Hwan scoffs, but she says that he’s the only one she trust. She reminds him that it isn’t Koryeo that wants him dead; Yuan does.

In response, Ta Hwan grimaces and then sits down, claiming his legs are too sore. Man, what a cream puff! In response to his whining about having nothing to eat and no sleep, she asks him what’s the weakest animal in the forest. When he rolls his eyes, she tells him that it’s him. He’s got nothing. She’s got the sword. He has no strength, no guts. Ta Hwan huffs back that, of course, she’s just super awesome. Written, that doesn’t convey the sarcasm in his voice very well. She tells him to keep it up.

Looking around, Seung Nyang says that it will be dark soon and the animals will be out. Then she drops the rope from around her waist and starts to walk away. Ta Hwan huffs after her, not believing her ‘threat,’ but he turns around to be face-to-face with a snake. He screams and starts running. He yells back to her to hurry because the animals might get her, too! She makes a face at him and starts walking after him.

Back in Inju, Byung Soo’s had a sketch of Seung Nyang made and takes it to give to Wang Ko. Cham tries to stop him, but he barges in on the meeting that Wang Ko’s having with Baek Ahn, Tal Tal and Ki Se to show Wang Ko the sketch. Wang Ko squints at the sketch and asks the man’s name. When he hears, it’s Seung Nyang, it instantly incurs his wrath. After all, she betrayed him. He orders the picture posted in Inju and Kaegyong, along with a reward. His men are to monitor everything!

Ja Hae arrives, ticked. Ki Se asks about the bandage around Ja Hae’s hand. Ja Hae looks at it and grimaces, clenching his hand. He growls that Ki Ja Oh is like a madman. Go on, Ki! He turns to Cham and orders Ki chained.

Ki Se and company take some dogs and head into the mountains after Seung Nyang and Ta Hwan. It starts to rain and Baek Ahn declares to his nephew that Heaven smiles on them. And he’s right, because the dogs lose the scent. Elsewhere, Ta Hwan is whining about getting out of the rain. He kicks Seung Nyang when she ignores him. She turns around and declares that he can’t catch cold from a little rain. He fake coughs and says he’s already caught one. She tells him he’ll survive. He still wants to take a break. She asks him if he could be any more selfish? He should remember all those who died trying to protect he. He now feels bad, but doesn’t want to admit it. As they walk on, she grabs her arm and wills her father to hang on and stay alive.

Elsewhere, with Ki in a caged cart, Wang Ko and Soon Yong are riding toward the capital. They decide to stop at a gisaeng house nearby, since it’s raining and all. Four riders approach, wearing the straw hats of hiding. Not obvious at all. It’s Wang Yoo and his men. He tells his boys to keep their heads down. Byung Soo rides forward and tells them to dismount and show some respect to the King of Shenyang. They do and Wang Ko walks on.

As Wang Ko’s entourage passes, Wang Yoo and the others see a captured Ki and he sees them. You can tell from Wang Yoo’s face that he is horrified that this man is being treated this way, also alarmed at what this means: that Seung Nyang is in danger, if not dead. He orders Moo Song and Jeom Bak to follow Wang Ko while he and Shin Woo press on.

At the gisaeng house, Wang Ko offers a drink to General Byung Soo. Cham doesn’t like it, but Byung Soo’s eating it up. It’s just what Byung Soo's greedy ambition is craving. Outside, a gisaeng arrives to give all the Yuan soldiers some wine, which they promptly get drunk on and pass out. Moo Song and Jeom Bak enter with Jeom Bak marveling over the drug that Moo Song put in the liquor. The two frantically look for the key.

Jeom Bak says that he’ll stand guard. Moo Song sneaks in to where Ki is. The poor man looks terrible, but they haven’t cut out his tongue yet. Moo Song begins to try to untie him, but Ki stops him. Outside, Jeom Bak sees Wang Ko and the others coming. Inside, Ki’s told Moo Song that Seung Nyang and Ta Hwan are alive and being chased by Ki Se on Mount Hoenggye. Ki’s certain they’ll go that way, because it’s the worst possible route. Jeom Bak gives the bird call and Moo Song frantically tries to free Ki. Ki tells Moo Song to leave him and save Seung Nyang. Moo Song reluctantly agrees to go, but Ki stops him with a “wait…”

Moo Song and Jeom Bak narrowly get away as Wang Ko arrives. He’s not happy to see all these sleeping men. Byung Soo declares this will never happen when he's in charge. Because he’s a few choice words that I shall not type here. The two go in to see Ki. Looking Ki over once, Wang Ko orders Byung Soo to dig out Ki’s eyes, cut off his tongue and his ears so that Ki’s left a living corpse that will never speak, see, or hear again. Ki looks over at Byung Soo, not believing that this man who was once his friend would do this. Byung Soo sputters that they haven’t found Ta Hwan yet. Wang Ko’s confident that Ki Se will find them. Byung Soo asks why they don’t just kill Ki, but Wang Ko says that he needs Ki alive, so the king can see who betrayed Ta Hwan. Wang Ko walks away, sniggling, leaving Byung Soo to the task.

Once they’re alone, Ki tells Byung Soo that he should never have promoted him. Byung Soo replies that Ki did this to himself. Ki asks where Byung Soo’s sense of duty is, that he would betray his own country? Byung Soo vents that this isn’t his country: the year he was born, his father died fighting the Yuan. His mother was beaten to death when she stole some rice to feed her children. Of his three siblings, one starved, one froze to death and his sister killed herself rather than be a Yuan concubine. That is what his father died fighting to protect. And the bad logic astounds me. Your father died trying to stop Yuan from totally destroying your homeland. Men like Wang Ko are the reason why your mother was so destitute and why she was beaten when she stole. And your sister killed herself because men like Wang Ko think it’s great to send women to be concubines. To add to it all, Byung Soo says that he didn’t betray his country; it betrayed him.

Ki tries to point out the flaw in his logic: The Yuan did this to them. They’re the ones Byung Soo should fight. Byung Soo tells Ki to live his fantasy and die a soldier. Instead, in the names of his dead family, Byung Soo’s going to live for himself. And I’m sure that your father is cheering at just this moment. Before Byung Soo starts, Ki leaves him with one last thing: the outcome won’t be what he thinks. And then Byung Soo drives the red hot poker into Ki’s eye, sealing both their fates.

On the mountain, Seung Nyang is wrapping up Ta Hwan’s feet. He proposes that they stay there, where no one can find them. In a year, maybe six months, he’ll be emperor. Ta Hwan will give Seung Nyang an estate as big as Koryeo. Better yet, he’ll have the highest office in Yuan. Can her King match that? She turns to look at him. He giggles, convinced he’s swayed her. He declares that greed always works. As an answer, she puts a gag over his mouth and drags him forward.

Now it’s night. Ki Se and company are still searching for Ta Hwan. Baek Ahn tells Ki Se that it’s been days and he should just give up. Ki Se declares that he *never* gives up. Wang Yoo and the boys are also still looking. Their fancy hats of hiding are no where to be seen. They spot one of Seung Nyang’s arrows. Looking at it, Wang Yoo wills Seung Nyang to hang on and vows that he will find her, she just needs to hang on a bit longer.

Seung Nyang is bedding them down for the night, covering Ta Hwan with leaves for warmth. He wants her to light a fire, but she refuses because it might be seen. He asks her what Wang Yoo’s secret is: he’s offered her wealth, position, and she still turns him down. Those men didn’t die for him, they died for her King. No one ever risked their lives for him. Instead of answering him, she just tells him to get some sleep. As he rolls over and moans over why he can’t inspire men, she sighs and thinks about her father and his humiliation.

As Ta Hwan sleeps, she pulls her uniform off her arm and applies some plant to try to stave off the infection. The wound looks nasty. As she’s doctoring herself, Ta Hwan bolts up. Quickly she covers herself. But Ta Hwan is still asleep. He tells El Temur, that the tyrant is wrong. He’ll be a great Khan yet. And when he is... he’s coming for El Temur first. He mutters vengeance and then settles in again.

The next day, Ki Se and his gang find the camp. He also finds blood on the tree. Although how she bled through her sleeve, etc, like that, I don’t know. Ki Se knows they’re close. Ki Se pictures them running away and laughs because Seung Nyang was hurt and Ta Hwan must be exhausted. Ki Se remarks that Seung Nyang’s running like a girl. Ki Se orders them to release the hounds!

Seung Nyang and Ta Hwan are moving, with Ta Hwan complaining all the way. She catches the sounds of the dogs baying. Ta Hwan is clueless as she shushes him. Out rushes a dog, which Seung Nyang kills, and as she unties them, she quickly tells him to stick with her and run. Running, running. Seung Nyang and Ta Hwan running. Ki Se and his men running. Wang Yoo and his men running.

Seung Nyang and Ta Hwan reach a cliff. She tells Ta Hwan they need to jump. Ta Hwan starts sputtering that he can’t, that El Temur was right: he can’t do anything. Seung Nyang yells at him, asking him what he’s actually *done* to be the Khan… waited for his brother to die? Ki Se and his men are closing in. Seung Nyang tells him that if he wants to live, to be emperor, he has to jump. A tear rolls down Ta Hwan’s cheek as he faces his ultimate fear: death.

Ki Se arrives and sounds all soothing as he tells Ta Hwan that it’s dangerous and he should come down to ‘safety.’ Ta Hwan knows time is up. He tells Seung Nyang on three. She counts as Ta Hwan stares at Ki Se. Then they run and jump. And it’s obvious to me with how Ha Ji Won jumps that she’s used the wires before. She's very fluid and using her weight to project herself. Ji Chang Wook, not so much. They make it to the cliff on the other side and are able to grab hold. Ki Se can believe they jumped (no one can) and calls the pair insane! As Seung Nyang and Ta Hwan hang there, Ta Hwan keeps crying in disbelief that they did it!

Down below Wang Yoo and his boys arrive and see Seung Nyang and Ta Hwan pinned on the cliff as Ki Se’s soldiers fire arrows at them. And those are some really BADLY trained men, because the pair is maybe 50 feet away and no one is hitting the mark. Ta Hwan, having no endurance training at all, ends up losing his grip and falls into the river below. Seung Nyang jumps in after him.

Back in Yuan, the Emperor has died. Oops. Dad’s not going to be too happy, Ki Se. Empress Dowager mourns her son. She announces that Ta Hwan Temur Khan is now Emperor. She’s informed that El Temur has gone to Koryo, to escort the Prince personally. She knows what that means. But what can she do about it?

Back in Koryeo, Seung Nyang has managed to get Ta Hwan out of the water. He’s basically frozen, so she ends up stripping them both down (mostly) so they can share body heat. He’s unconscious so he doesn’t see she’s a girl. She begs him to live so that she can save her father. Later, her sleeping on top of him, Ta Hwan starts to wake up. He realizes that Seung Nyang is lying on top of him. She starts to wake up, so he pretends to be asleep. She wakes up and realizes that she’s half clothed, so she quickly puts on her shirt. Ta Hwan sneaks a peak.

Seung Nyang crawls over to check his breathing, and he’s holding his breath, so she puts her head on his chest to listen for his heart beat. His eyes pop open. He wonders what his reaction to this is, because Seung Nyang’s a man. Seung Nyang looks his way and he pretends to be unconscious. She decides to give him mouth-to-mouth, since he’s not breathing, and that does it. He ‘wakes’ up. She’s so happy he’s okay that she hugs him. He tells her to get off him.

Ta Hwan asks her why her chest is bandaged. So he *did* see it! I was hoping that he missed it. He worries that the infection from her arm has spread. He tries to examine her but she clenches her shirt shut and says that it’s nothing. Ta Hwan notices her fever, but she brushes it off and tells him that they’re close to Kaegyong. She skedaddles out of there under the excuse of surveying the area. As she leaves, Ta Hwan concludes that he’s having heart trouble. That’s why his heart is pounding so.

Wang Ko has arrived in Kaegyong with Commander Ki, who looks really pathetic and broken. He asks Cham if the King has seen the Prince, and when he’s told no, he concludes that they nearly sneezed in their own soup. Like that expression! Ki Se and his men arrive as well. Wang Yoo comes out, looking imperial. Wang Ko announces that Ki Ja Oh killed Ta Hwan. Wang Yoo knows the truth. Ki Se demands Ki explain himself, but Ki is clueless because he’s now without ears. Wang Ko declares that they needn’t bother, since Ki is deaf, dumb, and blind. Wang Yoo clenches his jaw and his men are horrified at what’s been done to this loyal soldier. But Byung Soo can provide an eyewitness account, of course. And Byung Soo never lied to the King for personal gain before.

Byung Soo testifies that Ki Ja Oh murdered Prince Ta Hwan and leveled Daechong Island. Wang Yoo yells that these are lies! How dare Byung Soo! Byung Soo sticks to the story. Wang Ko’s quite pleased with how this is going and smirks quite readily. Before Byung Soo can continue, Wang Yoo asks Ja Hae if he’d ever met Ki. Ja Hae says that he hasn’t. Wang Yoo calls Moo Song forward and asks about what Ki reported: that Ki injured Ja Hae’s hand. Moo Song confirms it, that Ki told him this at the Inju gisaeng house. Flashback to the bite and Moo Song and Ki. Wang Yoo declares that if Ki was telling the truth, Ja Hae’s hand will have bite marks. Ja Hae blusters, but Moo Song steps forward and twists Ja Hae’s hand to reveal the bite mark. Righteously indignant, Wang Yoo declares that Ta Hwan was murdered by all of them!

Stepmom Kyung Hwa appears with Soon Yong. Soon Yong announces that El Temur’s ship has docked. Oh, crap moment, even though Ja Hae smiles with relief because daddy’s here to rescue him. El Temur arrives and Kyung Hwa is all smiles as she welcomes him. He looks at Wang Yoo and says “long time, no see.” Wang Yoo responds that El Temur is just in time.

Later the two are seated across from each other. El Temur can’t believe what Wang Yoo’s saying: his boys murdered Ta Hwan? Wang Yoo tells El Temur that when they find the body, he wants El Temur out of Koryeo. El Temur replies that he doesn’t care who killed Ta Hwan, just that he’s dead. He chuckles and adds that whatever story he makes up, that’s what will be real. Wang Yoo leans forward and says that this is his palace, and Regent or not... El Temur cuts Wang Yoo off and says that to threaten him is to threaten Yuan. Does he want Koryeo bathed in blood? Wang Yoo steely replies that he’s not afraid. El Temur leans forward and wonders just which of them is stronger here in *his* palace.

Outside, men arrive with the royal guards, tied up. Wang Ko tells them that the royal guards are no more. Then he goes inside and, after saluting the regent, he reports that the royal guards are disbanded as per El Temur’s orders. As Wang Yoo processes what’s just happened, El Temur tells Wang Yoo that this is how he rules his empire. He then tells Wang Ko and his sons to treat the king with respect. Wang Yoo looks like he’s about to throw up at how easily his palace was taken over and how little power he really does have.

Ki Se and Ja Hae leave the Regent and go outside to tell Baek Ahn that Wang Yoo is confined to his quarters. Baek Ahn bids the two to go get some rest. They leave and Baek Ahn wonders why El Temur is there at all. Tal Tal, ever astute, remarks that the Emperor is dead. El Temur has to confirm Ta Hwan’s death to ensure the succession. Baek Ahn agrees with this assessment.

Inside, Wang Yoo is trying to stay composed as Shin Woo tells him that he can’t leave. Guards are everywhere. Moo Song tells him that Jeom Bak hasn’t been able to find either Seung Nyang or Ta Hwan’s bodies. They have to get out of here and search for the Prince. Wang Yoo shoves the plates off the table in frustration and announces that he’ll kill El Temur himself. After all, they did kill his baby! He pulls Moo Song’s sword. Why the guards have left Moo Song with a sword, I don’t know. Wang Yoo continues that it won’t just be El Temur but Wang Ko, Ki Se, Ja Hae, everyone on the palace grounds!

Shin Woo tells Wang Yoo that he can’t do this and Wang Yoo wants to know why he can’t kill thieves in his own house! Shin Woo answer that if he does, Koryeo will be bathed in blood and their people will die cursing his name. He’s practically crying, begging Wang Yoo to chill. Wang Yoo takes the sword and holds it to Shin Woo’s throat and commands him to be quiet! They’re evil and they must die. Wang Yoo starts to leave to carry out his ‘plan’ when Shin Woo grabs his legs and won’t let go. Shin Woo begs Wang Yoo to kill him instead. Moo Song chimes in to be included. Wang Yoo is basically crying now as he says, “What should I do? What can I do?” Now that the anger’s drained away, the depression’s setting in. Wang Yoo declares that they are cursed. Cursed unto death... Shin Woo and Moo Song cry with him as he moans that he cannot bear it! And I feel bad for the guy. Not crying, but I feel bad. And more tears from everyone.

Seung Nyang and Ta Hwan have reached a village. Seung Nyang’s wearing the straw hat of hiding and Ta Hwan has a scarf over his face. It’s not obvious at all. Ta Hwan spots the wanted poster. Even though it’s just her picture and no mention of the reward. She tells him to keep moving. They look ahead and spot Byung Soo, who’s happily strutting down the street. She hides. Ta Hwan doesn’t understand, since he’s one of her comrades. But soon enough, her gut shows correct. Cham arrives with some soldiers and he and Byung Soo are quite friendly. Seung Nyang spits that they are traitors. She tells Ta Hwan that it was Byung Soo that tried to kill him.

Seung Nyang sneaks them to an abandoned house, what looks to be where circus entertainers used to live. Ta Hwan is moaning over why they couldn’t have stayed in the forest. He calls her Sergeant Stubborn. The fever gets to be too much and Seung Nyang passes out. As Ta Hwan shakes her, he notices her arm and when he looks at it, it is disgusting. He mutters that she IS stubborn! He decides to go an get her some medicine. Which is exactly what she’d want you to do, go out where you can be seen and possibly caught and killed.

Ta Hwan runs, carrying her bow. He isn’t thinking about himself or how his life might be in danger, only that Seung Nyang got hurt trying to save him. He begs Seung Nyang not to die. Ta Hwan reaches a healer. The man has a powder that will help fight infection. Ta Hwan asks how much, calling him Pops. The elder is rightly offended. Ta Hwan tries to give him Seung Nyang’s bow and arrows, but the man calls Ta Hwan a rude little twit and tells him to forget it. Ta Hwan gets his Imperial tone and asks how dare the guy! The man isn’t intimidated and chases Ta Hwan out of his shop by hitting him with a broom.

Ta Hwan doesn’t go far and soon comes back with a sack. The guy tells him to get lost but Ta Hwan shushes him with a ‘huh-huh!’ and starts tossing around the ‘money’ sack. What the heck’s in the sack, since you know he has no money. And where did he get the sack? Ta Hwan claims that it’s 5 taals of silver. The man’s all to eager to get that much money. As he examines the ‘money’ Ta Hwan creeps backward and finds the powder he needs. The guy discovers that they’re really rocks, but Ta Hwan has already grabbed the medicine and run.

What ensues is a crazy chase involving Ta Hwan and a pack of soldiers. Ta Hwan ends up running into (literally) Jeom Bak and leaving behind Seung Nyang’s bow and arrows. Jeom Bak realizes that Wang Ko’s men are chasing probably the Prince, er, Emperor. Jeom Bak helps Ta Hwan escape by dumping the water tower over right after Ta Hwan runs past, blocking their route.

Ta Hwan’s still hiding, but he’s still got the medicine. Of course, Jeom Bak’s able to find him. He pins Ta Hwan to the wall and demands to know how he got The Jackal’s arrows. Ta Hwan asks him if he knows Seung Nyang. Jeom Bak realizes he’s Ta Hwan. He declares, “I’m with you!” Again he asks about Seung Nyang, where she is.

Jeom Bak brings a doctor to tend to Seung Nyang. She’s still unconscious with fever. He goes outside to report and declares that they were just in time and that he left them some other medicine. Ta Hwan is relieved and goes back inside to sit with his friend. Jeom Bak tells the doctor not to tell anyone. Doc says that he won’t, but adds that he’s never seen a woman endure such pain. Jeom Bak asks, what woman? The doctor looks like he’s stupid and replies, “Who else? The girl inside.” Jeom Bak clarifies: The Jackal... is a girl? The doctor replies, like Jeom Bak is an idiot, “You didn’t know?”

Inside, Ta Hwan tenderly tries to make Seung Nyang more comfortable. He thinks about all the things she did to take care of him while they were on the run: wrap up his feet, give him her vest for covers. He mutters that he’s such a jerk, only thinking of himself. He hits himself in the head, because he’s so mad at himself. He tells her that, even though she would deny it, she’s his first real retainer. His eyes get wet as he tells her that in this whole wide world, she’s his only real friend. Dang, this guy is good, because my eyes are a little glassy right now.

The next morning, Seung Nyang awakes to find Ta Hwan sleeping a few feet away beside her. She slowly sits up and Jeom Bak enters. She asks him what happened. Good question, since the last she knew, no one knew where they were… Jeom Bak tells her that he’ll explain later. At least she’s alive. He looks really happy to see her. He gives her some water to drink and then oh, so casually, asks her why she didn’t say that she’s a girl. Ta Hwan is mortified that he knows. And probably *how* he found out. Jeom Bak tells her that the doctor mentioned it. She begs him not to say anything. He’s amenable.

Her thoughts turn to the king and Jeom Bak tells her that he’s surrounded by enemies. The palace, Kaegyong, everywhere. Seung Nyang declares that, no matter what, the King has to know that Ta Hwan is alive. Jeom Bak says that there’s no way for them to get to the king and worries if they’re going to force Wang Yoo to abdicate.

Suddenly, Seung Nyang realizes there’s a really bad odor. Jeom Bak says that his stomach was upset and he didn’t have time to change. Does that mean he pooped in his pants? That is really gross, considering he must have sat in it all night. This gives Seung Nyang an idea. And she’s going to use Byung Soo to get it done. Revenge. I like it.

Next we see a coffin and Seung Nyang tells Ta Hwan to get in. He doesn’t want to. Jeom Bak arrives with the rotten fish oil, which really reeks. And I see where she’s going with this... Clever. She declares that this rotten fish oil will save Ta Hwan’s life. Ta Hwan protests that it’s going to kill him first! But he goes along with the plan. Jeom Bak does not look like he envies Ta Hwan at all. They cover him all over with salt. I really don’t envy him at all. How drying that would be. And then they pour the fish oil all over the salt. Wow. That’s got to be horrid. But eventually you wouldn’t really smell it anymore. And how long would it take to get it out of your hair? Your skin? So gross.

And now the plan is in action. Byung Soo is out stuffing his face. He’s is a really good mood, since with a new king the world will be his. He’s reveling in the idea of General Yom Byung Soo. While he’s relieving himself, Seung Nyang appears behind him. He’s startled and we end with her saying Byung Soo’s name. What a weird place to end.

Thoughts

So what the heck is Seung Nyang doing at the moment? Why directly approach Byung Soo? And poor Ta Hwan. That has to really reek.

Ta Hwan is really an interesting character. But one I like, because, underneath all his whining and cowering, is a person who is willing to risk his life for someone he cares about. He didn’t give a second thought to his own safety when it came to saving her. And that says something about him. I also think that this episode was a big turn of events for him, because he did something he was sure he couldn’t do: he looked death in the face and jumped anyway. Hopefully, this new-found confidence will continue to grow. But, we still have 45 more episodes, so who knows.

The events with El Temur really illustrate just how powerless Wang Yoo really is. They *easily* took over his palace and put him under house arrest. I think up until this point, Wang Yoo thought somewhere that it was just because his father was feeble, that Koryeo was under Yuan’s thumb, rather than the fact that Yuan’s army is far superior in number to Koryeo’s. But I think what distressed him the most, even though he couldn’t really say it, was that Seung Nyang was dead. The woman, er, man he loved was dead. Not that he’d admit that part either.

I have to give it to her. She’s now got not one but two kings in love with her.

And it’s interesting, so far, for me, because most of the ‘emotional’ beats, I haven’t really felt, watching this series, especially when they involve Seung Nyang’s character. The only ones that have really gotten me are the one that Ta Hwan’s had (and Ki - that was just really sad), but hers... not so much. I don’t know if it’s just that they seem *too* tragic. (And what about her brothers?) But every time she cries, she doesn’t move me. I don’t know if it’s a weakness on Ha Ji Won’s part or what, but she just doesn’t make me cry. Maybe that will change later. I think of an actress like Gong Hyo Jin crying as Seung Nyang and it really gets me just even imagining her weeping, but Ha Ji Won, not so much. As much as I’d like to. And that’s not to say that her looks of longing for Wang Yoo don’t get me, but just not the crying.

Again, I am enjoying Seung Nyang and Ta Hwan’s relationship, I think even more than her relationship with Wang Yoo, and I think it’s because she’s not as guarded with Ta Hwan. I can’t see her cutting loose with Wang Yoo, but I can with Ta Hwan. Again, what their relationship will be like once they reach Yuan, I don’t know, but it was huge how attached Ta Hwan has become to her, calling her his only friend.

And finally, Seung Nyang’s secret is out. Almost. But it’s just a matter of time before Jeom Bak reassures either Moo Song or Shin Woo that the king’s affections are okay, because Seung Nyang’s really a woman. You know it’s coming. And probably soon.
