What better way to break a recapping hiatus than a show starring Soo Ae and Kim Young Kwang?
Our story starts in an airport. Which makes sense since Na Ri is a stewardess. Yes, I said stewardess, because the Korean word is derived from it. Soo Ae looks great. And I love the uniform. Very chic. Looks like she works for Asiana Airlines. As Hong Na Ri (Soo Ae) steps off the elevator, Henry’s I Want to Enter Your Heart (니 맘에 들어갈래) begins to play. Henry's song really works in portraying how cool she is.
♬ Ooh ooh ooh ooh ohh ♬
♬ What up girl? ♬
♬ Ooh ooh ooh ooh ohh ♬
♬ That's right ♬
Na Ri narrates that walking in her uniform attracts the attention of men, women and children. As Na Ri walks by people stop and stare. A guy looks over his sunglasses at her, in awe. Most of the people she passes are slack-jawed.
♬ When I see you, girl, it's about you ♬
♬ Ooh ooh ooh ooh ohh, it's about you ♬
She's joined by other stewardesses, including Do Yeo Joo (Jo Bo Ah). People continue to stare as they walk by.The confidence with which these women walk. They’re pretty darn cool. You might think I’m being facetious when I say that being a stewardess is considered cool. I’m not. Being chosen as a stewardess is a big deal in Korea; there are girls I met whose dream job is to be a stewardess.
♬ Everyone, they look new everyday, actually ♬
♬ Ooh ooh ooh ooh ohh, it's about you ♬
Switch to a crowded chaotic airplane. Much more chaotic than my Korean Air flight. Na Ri helps a Yoo Shi Eun (Wang Bit Na) load a heavy carryon into the overhead compartment.
♬ No I can't do that kind of love ♬
Crying baby, complaining customers. Guy asks for water (before the flight takes off). A couple loudly argues over something not being packed. Na Ri says that she meets all kinds of irritable people at the beginning or at the end of a flight. That's her work. And she does it with grace and a smile.
♬ I fell for you, just you and me ♬
♬ So confused by it ♬
Na Ri walks by Yeo Joo. Camera pans to a woman with sunglasses on. She takes them off with irritation. She stands up and tells Yeo Joo that she’s Jung Yeon's fiancée. Whoever that is. Yeo Joo looks uncomfortable for a second and then pleasantly tell Fiancée to please go back to her seat. Fiancée demands to know why Yeo Joo is ignoring her calls! If you're going to be like this, why would she answer them? She wants to know why Yeo Joo is making her get on the plane! Sweetie, no one made you get on the plane, or act this obnoxious. Yeo Joo still tries to be pleasant (and innocent).
Fiancée waves a dismissive hand at Yeo Joo and says that they’re done talking. Were you talking? I thought you were just yelling and being rude. Fiancée tells Yeo Joo to give back the car or she’ll report Yeo Joo for being a thief. Yeo Joo replies, the smile cracking, that the car was a gift! This earns Fiancée grabbing her hair bun and trying to shove her face into a seat. Yeo Joo starts yell for Fiancée to let go of her hair!
Passengers stand up to watch – most of them are appalled. Not all, though. Na Ri arrives and pleasantly tells Fiancée that it is a crime to threaten or physically assault a stewardess. Fiancée could be arrested. She asks for Fiancée to please go back to her seat.
As Fiancée goes back to her seat, she mutters about why Na Ri is bringing the law into it. Um, assault? Plus, there’s always the Nut Rage incident.
Na Ri gives Yeo Joo a look that says to cut out her shenanigans and Yeo Joo uncomfortably looks away. I guess there’s a story there.
Narrating Na Ri says that life is a trip. You never know who you'll meet, and in what kind of situation you'll get caught. Hmmm… I wonder what she’s referring to? Heh.
Flight lands and stewardesses disembark. The juniors say goodbye to Na Ri and Shi Eun – except for Yeo Joo, who just walks by without saying anything. Shi Eun is annoyed and amazed at her lack of respect. Na Ri answers that Yeo Joo has no energy when she’s going to be disciplined. For disrupting the flight and making Asian Air look bad. Shi Eun takes comfort in that.
Na Ri smiles and sighs as she looks at her phone. Shi Eun asks if Na Ri’s heart still pounds after nine years. It does. Na Ri adds that her fiancé said that he'll surprise her today, and he sent her a café card to "Romantic Island." Shi Eun practically squeals as she says that it’s a café specializing in proposals! Na Ri likes the sound of that. After all, she did say that he still makes her heart pound.
Switch to Romantic Island. There’s a path of lights and rose petals, tons of balloons and Dong Jin standing at the end with a bouquet of flowers. Wow, this reminds me of the proposal in ‘Marriage Not Dating.’
Sign behind Dong Jin asks Ha Ri to marry him. They smile at each other – although she looks a little uncomfortable. Hmm. Her face is expressionless as he asks her to marry him. She pretends to be surprised as she gasps and starts to smile. Dong Jin beams as he hands her the bouquet.
There’s a slide show with pictures of them. Wow, he really went all out. Wanted to check if this was k-drama fantastic or standard for Korea. These webpages say that it’s k-drama fantastic:

Australia vs Korea: Wedding Cultural Difference
She smiles at the bouquet and he smiles proud of himself. She still hasn’t said yes. She giggles and he goes to get the ring. Again, not normally a Korean tradition. He’s tied it to one of the balloons… but can’t find it. And I laugh. Na Ri helps and finds it. Na Ri narrates that you can't predict anything in life. Dong Jin chuckles and hurries over to put the ring on her finger. Narrating Na Ri says “Receiving an awkward proposal from a long-time lover.” They’re only awkward when you’re not really that excited about marrying the person. They laugh.
Now they’re eating, serenaded. I don’t recognize the song. Majorly cheesy, though, and the guy is singing it with gusto. Na Ri gets a phone call and she steps away from the table to answer it. It’s her uncle with terrible news. Her mother was in an accident and has left the world. As stunned Na Ri’s hand drops to her side and she does move as Dong Jin and the restaurant staff start shooting off streamers and confetti.
Na Ri narrates that you can't predict anything in life. Someone she thought who'd be by her side forever...
Oma’s funeral. Aw, it’s Kim Mi Sook, the mother from ‘City Hunter.’ Na Ri’s co-workers offer her condolences. Dong Jin walks them to a table and puts in the order for food. Yeo Joo seems a little too eager to catch Dong Jin’s eye. And is wearing dangly earrings. Tacky, but eye-catching. She catches his eye and he’s uncomfortable.
Na Ri never moves from her spot, seated by the funeral display. I feel so bad for her. She narrates that you can't predict anything in life. Shoes approach. Man doesn’t enter but looks over at Na Ri. Na Ri narrates that including the fact that Oma’s death was not an end, but a beginning to a huge incident. You can't predict anything in life. Man is Go Nan Gil (Kim Young Kwang). He looks really sad. And it looks like he’s looking more at Na Ri than Oma. I wonder what he’s thinking.
Na Ri and the group are just finishing up a flight. Shi Eun tells Na Ri that she worked well. Glamorous music starts to play. Yeo Joo’s phone starts to ring with received texts. Na Ri texts someone that she’s arrived. She’s a little surprise that there’s no answer. More texts on Yeo Joo’s phone, which she is intentionally not answering. Another sucker on the hook, I see.
Shi Eun leans in and whispers, calling Yeo Joo a fiery fox... Whose son did she suck the life out of before she dumped him? Glancing at Yeo Joo, Na Ri says that Yeo Joo didn't dump him yet. She likes him this time. Shi Eun wonders why Na Ri thinks that and Na Ri answers that Yeo Joo’s face is full of a sense of satisfaction. Shi Eun wonders why Yeo Joo isn’t answering. When Na Ri says it’s because she likes him. Shi Eun can’t believe Yeo Joo’s games. I can’t believe men fall for them either.
Na Ri sends another text, remarking that her first text was read. She tells him to work hard. Because she assumes that the person isn’t answering because of work. Yeo Joo gets another text and smiles to herself. Shi Eun spots Dong Jin and points him out to Na Ri. He’s not working and he’s looking at his phone. So did he just not answer her? He turns around and awkwardly waves at Na Ri. Wow, he looks excited to see fiancée and girlfriend of nine years. Yeo Joo’s stopped smiling.
Na Ri greets Dong Jin as sunbae. Shi Eun greets him and Yeo Joo doesn’t say anything. Why can’t Dong Jin stop looking at Yeo Joo? He says hello and she nods a hello, with an innocent Oppa-you’re-the-best look on her face. Shi Eun comments that she heard Dong Jin has been really busy since he’s so successful. Yeah, right. And that’s why he can’t stop looking at Yeo Joo. Yeo Joo hurries Shi Eun away, even as Shi Eun silently protests. Dong Jin watches them go.
Na Ri slaps Dong Jin’s arm and tells him that he should have texted her if he was going to meet her at the airport. Dong Jin turns around and quickly says that he’s going on a business trip all of a sudden… to China. Yeah, right. I am liking Dong Jin less and less. Na Ri wants to know when and the story changes to investors are coming from China today, so he has to reserve the hotel and meet with them for a few days. Na Ri looks a little disappointed.
Awkward face and Dong Jin makes a face – like he hates himself. Or maybe I’m reading into it. He rubs his hair at the tension. Guilt. Na Ri apologizes. Dong Jin’s a little thrown that *she’s* apologizing. She replies that since Oma died, all she’s done is work. She promises to slow down and be good to him from now on. And I gag a little. The cheater doesn’t deserve it! Wait. His cheating hasn’t been confirmed. But he sure is acting guilty. Dong Jin smiles, looking guilty. He offers to buy Na Ri a coffee and sandwich. She replies that she’s still on duty and can't carry stuff like that while she’s working. Na Ri tells Dong Jin to have a nice meeting today and work hard. She’ll be going. She is oblivious and Dong Jin sighs, looking really guilty.
Outside the terminal, Na Ri realizes that she forgot to give him a gift. She hurries back inside, calling him at the same time. When she spots him, he’s on the phone. Dong Jin desperately asks where Caller is. He worries away. Na Ri follows him.
Dong Jin leaves the airport and starts running to meet Caller. He runs out in front of a bus and almost gets hit. Na Ri yelps and then wonders if he’s gone crazy when he doesn’t really react but starts running some more. She hurries to follow. As she comes around a corner, she sees Dong Jin meeting his Caller. It’s Yeo Joo. And I want to beat them both. Especially her, smiling all smugly as she walked behind Na Ri.
Yeo Joo gives good Oppa face as she tells Dong Jin – sounding worried, of course – that Dong Jin looks terrible and it’s making her feel sad. She refers to herself in the 3rd person and actually calls him Oppa. I hate her already. He pulls her into a deep hug and Na Ri’s world is turned upside down. Na Ri’s phone rings. It’s the printer, calling to confirm what’s going on the wedding invitations. Even more annoyed at the cheaters. “The two of us will look to the same map and will walk through life together. Please be with us as we begin our journey.” Na Ri watches Dong Jin and Yeo Joo walk away, his arm around Yeo Joo. This is the correct wording, right? Na Ri replies that it isn’t. They’ve picked different maps. She’s still stunned but decides to follow them.
She’s let down her bun as she steps in front of Dong Jin’s car. He almost hits her. I don’t know who looks more shocked, Dong Jin or Yeo Joo. Wow, Na Ri’s hair looks crazy. Na Ri leans on the car hood and glares at them. She walks around to Yeo Joo’s side and opens the door. Pull her by the hair! Even better – Na Ri pulls Yeo Joo out of the car by her scarf. As she yanks Yeo Joo around by the scarf, she calls Yeo Joo out on her games:
You did that on purpose, didn't you? You didn't answer his calls knowing he'd come find you out of desperation, right? You did that on purpose, so I'd see you two, right?Na Ri grabs Yeo Joo’s shoulders and asks if Yeo Joo thinks she’s won. Then she tells Yeo Joo to have him. And I officially love Na Ri now. Not going to try to keep the cheater, but cut her loses and kick him to the curb. She calls Dong Jin the trash she threw away and head butts Yeo Joo. Dong Jin has run up – but not interfered – and is shocked by the head butt. Yeo Joo looks up at Na Ri, nose bleeding. She starts freaking out at the nose bleed.
Na Ri’s attention turns to the cheater. He says that it’s just a misunderstanding. Of course it is. She walks over and punches him in the gut. Should have aimed lower. She starts to slam his head into the car hood as she tells him that she thought he was superficial, ignorant and a lazy bum. But he’s a liar and a womanizer! She throws him on the ground next to Yeo Joo.
Switch back to a stunned Na Ri. Aw, it was all in her head. Boo! She snaps out of her thoughts and turns around as Dong Jin’s car drives by. No, bust the man! Na Ri slowly walks back to the bus stop and sits in a daze on the bus.
College graduate Na Ri – wearing a graduation cap and gown and glasses –tells her that it's not her fault that her lover left. Na Ri did nothing wrong. There's no reason for her to lose her self-esteem. She’s still an amazing woman. I love how her rational self is dressed as a college graduate. Definitely an embodiment of how you try to be logical in the face of overwhelming emotions.
Logic Na Ri asks if Na Ri thinks revenge will make her happy? Will it improve her self-esteem? And the rationality continues. Does she want to break up or does she want to give him another chance? Dump him! Does Na Ri want to forgive him? As Logic Na Ri fades, Na Ri lets out a big breath and looks out the window, trying to answer those questions.
Over in Dong Jin’s car, Yeo Joo smiles smugly to herself as they hold hands. Then she puts back on her Oppa face. She notices that they’ve just crossed a bridge. She tells Oppa that he said they were going to drink some tea for the last time. Sure you are. Wow, he’s even deceiving himself. Dong Jin tells her that she said she wanted to see the sea. Yeo Joo asks if Oppa is still stalking her SNS. He’s so relentless. She pretends to be upset. Dong Jin answers that he couldn’t contact Yeo Joo and how could he live without at least doing that? Wow, that would be romantic if he wasn’t a cheating liar. Touched, Yeo Joo agrees that they should go to the seaside.
They share a small smile. He brings her hand to his lips and kisses it. Again, would be sweet if he wasn’t a dog. Yeo Joo says that since it’s the last time, she can do that much. Dong Jin isn’t happy about being reminded that they’re ending it. She looks out the window and smiles to herself over how easily he’s manipulated.
Cut to a man in a red plaid shirt sleeping in the woods with a straw hat on his face. Let that be Nan Gil, please! Na Ri walks up, pulling her suitcase behind her. Wow, she definitely has decided not to care about how she looks. Sloppy hair wrapped in a knot on the top of her head, oversized baggy sweats. She looks terrible. Hang in there, sweetie!
Na Ri stops in front of a tree with Oma’s picture on it. Wow, it’s been 10 months since the funeral and that picture looks really untouched. Na Ri walks over, arms opened wide, and hugs the picture and the tree trunk. She lovingly caresses the tree as she says ‘Oma.’ That gets plaid shirt’s attention. Go Nan Gil (Kim Young Kwang) sits up, pulling the hat off his face. He sees Na Ri and immediately lies back down, replacing the hat on his face. Avoiding her, are you? Na Ri doesn’t notice him and sit down at a bench nearby. She pulls out her phone.
Yeo Joo is practically crowing as she tells Dong Jin again that it’s the last time, so what could go wrong? Dong Jin pouts. Annoying Oppa pleading. She leans over and pecks him on the cheek twice. He can’t help but laugh. He agrees that it's nice seeing the sea. Phone rings and navigation says that Na Ri is calling. They look at each other. Yeo Joo grabs the phone, an impish look on her face. She refuses to give Dong Jin the phone. He tells her to stop, because it’s dangerous, and she answers the call. Pause and then Dong Jin loudly tells Na Ri that it's a little hard for him to take the call right now. Sure it is. And he’s stuttering. Heh.
Na Ri tells him to just listen. Nan Gil is listening, too. She says that she’s come to see Oma. Dong Jin is a little worried that Na Ri is visiting his mother but figures that she went to visit her mother’s grave. He tries to get off the phone, saying that he’ll call her later. She cuts him off declaring that there is no later! Split screen showing Yeo Joo and Dong Jin’s reactions to Na Ri’s declaration. She’s came all the way to Oma’s grave so that she can say this in front of Oma.
She yells for him to shut up and listen! Nan Gil – who is also listening – cringes when she yells. His face says that he’s a little surprised at how angry she is to be that rude on the phone. Na Ri declares that Dong Jin lies whenever his mouth is open. Heh. She calls him a bastard. Yeo Joo covers her mouth, shocked at Na Ri’s crudeness and Dong Jin can’t believe it either. Na Ri declares that they’re through! At that declaration, Nan Gil has to take off his hat so he can hear better.
Dong Jin has been looking at Yeo Joo and not paying attention. She looks at the road and screams because they are about to crash into a parked car. Dong Jin barely misses it. He silently screams and Yeo Joo covers her mouth, realizing that Na Ri must have heard her scream. Na Ri asks why it had to be Do Yeo Joo, of all people? Did their time together meant nothing to him? Nan Gil starts to try and slowly crawl away unseen by Na Ri.
Na Ri says that she’ll skip over several other comments since Oma would be hurt if she heard Na Ri talk like that. Nan Gil’s jeans leg gets caught on something. Na Ri declares that she and Dong Jin are finished. Nan Gil frantically tries to pull his pant leg free. Luckily, he’s behind a big mound of dirt, so Na Ri doesn’t see him.
Dong Jin tries to get off the phone. Na Ri addresses Yeo Joo. Yeo Joo gasps – Na Ri did hear her. Not that she didn't already see you in the car, but you don't know that. Na Ri tells Yeo Joo to listen well. From now on Yeo Joo shouldn’t appear in front of her. If Yeo Joo sees her, Yeo Joo should avoid her. If they’re by some unfortunate situation stuck in the same space, Yeo Joo better not look at her or talk to her. Don’t smile in front of her. Don’t eat in front of her. Don't do anything!
Yeo Joo frantically signals to Dong Jin to help her. He puts his arm around Yeo Joo to comfort her and asks what Na Ri is talking about. Na Ri can’t help but roll her eyes. Again, speaking to Yeo Joo, she says that she saw them together *and* heard her voice. Is Yeo Joo not going to answer? Dong Jin pulls his arm away.
Yeo Joo grimaces and answers sunbaenim Na Ri. Oppa Dong Jin kept coming by the airport and calling her. What could she do? Oh, she’s so right. Yeo Joo did nothing to encourage this relationship, not at all. Dong Jin looks at her with surprise for throwing him under the bus. Yeo Joo whines that they’re just going to talk briefly. Plus Na Ri and she work together. How can Na Ri say she cannot be seen?
Na Ri stifles a bitter chuckle at Yeo Joo’s gall and dares Yeo Joo to try talking to her. Try looking at her, eating and smiling in front of her face. If she’s curious what will happen, then try it! Na Ri sighs. Everyone called Yeo Joo a fiery fox, but she’s never called Yeo Joo that. Yeo Joo grimaces and bites her lip, because Na Ri’s about to bust her Oppa image. She quickly hangs up before Na Ri can say any more. Oppa pout at Dong Jin.
Na Ri can’t believe that Yeo Joo just hung up on her. She sighs loudly and promises Oma that from now on she will live well. Nan Gil has gotten his pant leg free and continues to crawl away. Dong Jin calls back so Na Ri turns off her phone. Nan Gil tries to not be seen, but his phone starts buzzing. He’s spotted. He tries to lie still as he silences his phone. Na Ri now stands in front of him. He looks up at her and groans. Stretching, he declares that that was a great nap! Real smooth.
Nan Gil looks over at Na Ri and she’s annoyed. Must be fun for him. The straw hat he's wearing is killing me! I love it. She starts to walk off, as Nan Gil smiles to himself. She stops and turns around. Nan Gil tries to not smile and looks down as yanks his hat down so that it hides his face. Heh. Na Ri eyes his outfit and asks if he’s the land’s care taker? He looks around him and flips off his hat. He asks if she means him. Indignant, she tells him to please put a few signs by the entrance. She always gets lost whenever she comes here. Nan Gil replies that he’s not. She doesn’t follow. He clarifies that he’s not the one who maintains this land. Na Ri bows politely and apologizes. She gives him a lip-curl glare and starts to leave again.
He yells after her. She turns around and he urgently says that there’s a snake. Na Ri freaks out. He walks by and says that he was saying that she should watch out for the snakes. Urgent does not equal ‘for your information.’ Na Ri can’t believe he just did that. Nan Gil climbs on his bike and, in a friendly tone, says that he will see her later. He pedals away as she asks herself why she would ever see him again. She tries to get him back by yelling that there’s a boar, but Nan Gil just waves without turning around. I like him.
Nan Gil rides through town, greeting people. And it’s a dog and dog house! Dogs are becoming more popular in Korea as pets, so I always notice when they pop up in a k-drama. He arrives at Hong Dumpling, where Kwon Duk Bong (Lee Soo Hyuk) is waiting for him. Duk Bong says it’s been a long time. Nan Gil considers and agrees. Not exactly friendly. Duk Bong complains about them not delivering. He doesn’t understand standing in line for food. Instead of apologizing, Nan Gil tells him to just leave then. No love lost there. Nan Gil walks away.
Yong Kyu calls Nan Gil ‘boss’ and clucks at him to be more presentable. The bike is so cheesy... Can’t he dress better? Nan Gil waves at him to cut it out. Yong Kyu starts to talk about the hat but stops when Nan Gil gestures that he’s going to beat Yong Kyu if Yong Kyu doesn’t stop. Yong Kyu huffs, frustrated, but doesn’t say anything else. Nan Gil goes inside.
It’s hopping with people loving the dumplings. Korean dumplings are good. Nan Gil enters the kitchen and samples the next batch of stuffing. He spits is out onto the floor and asks the two cookos what the point of skin for the dumplings if the inside sucks. They know they’re in trouble. Nan Gil asks who tasted it. Cook1 raises his hand sheepishly and points to Cook2. Shocked look from Cook2, and then he sighs. Nan Gil tells him to stop sighing before he’s given a reason to sigh. Nan Gil tells them to just do it over and walks away. And I’m impressed that he didn’t yell at them for the mistake, which they’ve probably made before. Nan Gil walks out back and stares at the gate. She came that far, but still didn't stop by the house today either. He sighs.
Airport. Na Ri and Yeo Joo are on the same flight again. Yeo Joo is brazen. Their eyes meet and Yeo Joo defiantly walks over and asks why she should avoid… Na Ri. That pause and ending practically in a whisper says it all. Na Ri’s practically grinning evilly as she tells Yeo Joo to give it a try. Na Ri says that she’s the sad woman who lost her love of nine years to a hoobae and Yeo Joo is the fox. Should she post it on the company blog? Yeo Joo tries to walk by but Na Ri blocks her path. Yeo Joo turns around and walks the other way.
Later the ladies sit to eat. I love their aprons! Na Ri arrives and Yeo Joo chokes on her food. Na Ri sits and Yeo Joo quickly exits. Shi Eun is amazed at how strange Yeo Joo is acting. People shouldn't change like that overnight. Yeo Joo’s a top-notch bitch, but she's been volunteering for things lately. Na Ri tells her not to worry. People don't change. She chomps on her bite of rice. Like she’s the shark eating her prey, that hoobae Yeo Joo.
Switch to a friend’s baby shower. Friend feels bad for her. Friend asks that Na Ri not be too hard on her… because Dong Jin is coming. Friend sheepishly says that Dong Jin’s really generous, which is why he stayed invited. Friend points out that they dated for over 10 years. She gives Na Ri a hard time for breaking up with Dong Jin over the phone. Na Ri can’t believe that Friend is talking about manners. Friend back pedals.
Dong Jin arrives. Na Ri drinks more soju. They end up at a pojangmacha. Na Ri has obviously drunk a lot more than Dong Jin. He apologizes and she tells him that he shouldn't be sorry. They’re both in the wrong. They dated too long. He says that he really was going to end it with Yeo Joo. Na Ri scoffs at that: Someone who wants to end it comes after her to the airport? He just lost his mind because he’s in love.
Na Ri looks at him and asks if a normal reaction to seeing them together would be to go crazy wondering what's going on. But she didn’t. Instead, she thought about dealing up their apartment and their savings. She thought, “He should pay off the wedding vendors since it's not my fault.” Na Ri doesn’t like that she thought like that. They’re just done.
Dong Jin whines at her not to say that. He didn't tell his family yet. Like that’s supposed to make her not break up. ‘Your rash decision to break up can be undone, since my family doesn’t know.’ He apologizes again. She stops him. She hates hearing people apologize. She tells him he can say it’s because of trauma. (The Korean term for trauma is ‘trauma.’) Her father ran off with another woman when she was young. She declares that she’ll never be with a man like that. They’re just over. They’re finished.
Dong Jin grimaces and after a moment brings up that her uncle borrowed 30,000 RKW from him after Oma’s funeral. Really? How is that Na Ri’s problem? Uncle said it was funeral expenses and he couldn’t ask Na Ri for it. Yeah, right, funeral expenses. Na Ri reaches for her phone and Dong Jin tells her not to call Uncle. It’s making him feel like a debt collector. Na Ri declares that she’ll pay him back once she sells Oma’s house. And that is going to be a problem, since Nan Gil is living in it. He protests that it’s not what he’s getting at. They’re already family. His parents think of her like that, too. Which is why you shouldn’t have stepped out on her, you jerk!
Na Ri starts to laugh at how pathetic he’s being. Dong Jin adds that she doesn’t have anyone else: Who else is there by her side but him? Na Ri stands up and leans over the table. Right. There's no one by her side. They’re a family. So much a family that he lied to her and cheated. How could they be family? She starts talking more loudly as she asks if he has legal papers stating that? Does lending 30,000 RKW make them family? They’re strangers! Perfect strangers. Not to be confused with the 80’s sitcom, ‘Perfect Strangers.’ She goes to pay and then fights with Dong Jin when he wants to pick up the bill. I say let him.
Na Ri chugs some water outside a convenience store. Dong Jin is still there. Her cheeks are bright red. She tells him that he can get the money back from the uncle that he thinks of as family. He probably gambled it all away already. How did I know that was coming? She declares that she’s not selling Oma’s house! She’ll leave it alone for the rest of her life! She’s starting to draw a crowd.
Dong Jin tries to herd her home but she doesn’t want him to touch her. She yells at him that she doesn't like Do Yeo Joo. Because she's pretty! She dresses well and puts makeup on nicely. She's so feminine! She doesn't like Yeo Joo! She can’t believe that he liked Do Yeo Joo’s style? She laughs bitterly and asks how much he must have disliked her all this time? She angrily asks how he can make it so she can’t break up with him in a sophisticated manner?! She notices the crowd and stumbles away. Dong Jin sighs and follows her.
Na Ri heads to a grocery store and calls Uncle, who doesn’t answer. Dong Jin catches up with her as she picks up a shovel. She almost hits him with it. He decides to let her be. She takes a taxi out to Oma’s house, sleeping on the way. That’s an expensive taxi ride.
Na Ri arrives at Uncle’s house. She drags the shovel on the ground as she walks in the yard. She yells at Uncle, asking how he can stab her in the back. She heads over to Oma’s house. She is comforted by the squeak of the gate. She comes across a hose in the yard and thinks it’s a snake. She screams and whacks it several times with the shovel. I hope she didn’t just damage the hose. She notices that something’s off and uses her phone’s light to look at the hose. She laughs at her mistake and asks it what else she was going to think, with it curled on the ground like that.
She uses the flashlight to light her path but completely walks by a hooded Nan Gil. She realizes that something was there and turns around. Standing there, half asleep, Nan Gil turns to look at her. She screams, drops her phone and starts swinging the shovel. She lands a blow to his leg, which send him to the ground. Brandishing the shovel, she demands to know who he is. He groans and rubs his leg.
He stands up and sighs. He turns on the outside lights. Coming back, he flips off his coat’s hood and asks her what she hit him with. He sees that it’s a shovel. She hit him with a shovel? She warns him not to come closer and demands to know what he’s doing in another person’s house?! Instead of answering her question he starts talking about getting hit with the shovel. He avoided it because he’s good at sports! Walking towards her again, he asks what would have happened if he got hit straight on? It's a murder! A murder! She falls backward onto the ground. I have to say it right now, I love him.
She gasps and reaches for the shovel, but he steps on it. She stares up at him. He does not look happy.
She sputters that this... this is her house. This is self offense. He repeats, ‘self offense?’ because that makes no sense. Na Ri hunts for the right term and finally finds it – self defense. He tells her that he’s someone who lives there as well. So, it's self offense by him. I really like this guy. She confused. He just looks at her.
Na Ri starts to laugh and stands up. Nan Gil looks at her like she’s a little crazy. She apologizes. It's been awhile since she’s been home. She must have mistaken her own house. He picks up the shovel and glares at her, annoyed at her drunkenness. She holds out her hands for the shovel. He just looks at her with the same annoyed face. She smiles and says that it’s hers. He’s not persuaded. She grabs part of its handle and starts yanking on it, demanding he give it to her! he just looks at her, less disgusted and more like he’s waiting for her to give up.
She yanks on it, yelling that it’s hers and he lets go. She flops to the ground. He mutters that she’s so pathetic... pathetic... Scolding he asks how she can not recognize her own house? He starts to walk back to the house. She uses the shovel to stand and follows him inside.
Inside, he takes off his cap and tousles his hair to get rid of cap-head. She enters and affirms that this is her house. She demands to know who he is for real?! He sighs with annoyance and asks how many times he has to tell her that he lives here?! She’s annoyed that he’s using informal language. She hiccups and figures it out – he’s a tenant! He chuckles at her refusal to accept what he’s saying.
Nan Gil leans in close and sniffs Na Ri several times. He asks if she’s been drinking, almost like he’s scolding her. Defiantly she declares that she has been. She’s had a hard time, drinking all this alcohol, and now he’s killing her buzz. So, to put it simply, she is the owner of this house. He chuckles a ‘whatever.’ His tenant contract is with her uncle...
Nan Gil stops her with a ‘no.’ He is not a tenant, but the house's owner. Na Ri can’t believe that he bought the house. Annoyed that she doesn’t listen, he tells her that that’s right. He heads over to the refrigerator. Na Ri sinks to the ground in disbelief at what Uncle has done.
Nan Gil holds out a cup of water. She slurps it down. He calmly watches her drink. She looks at him and says he looks familiar. Have they met each other somewhere? He mutters that she finally remember it now. He tells her that she treated him like a groundskeeper last time. Today, she’s treating him like a tenant. She realizes that he’s the snake guy. She's annoyed that he ignored her even after he recognized her. He replies that he said, "See you later." She asks if he knows her.
Nan Gil says that he doesn’t like to talk with someone who is drunk. They should talk tomorrow. She smacks the cup on the floor and declares that she’s sober! She must talk to him now. How he knows her... How long he’s owned this place... Why everything is as it was, when he’s the owner... She must know now. There’s a pause and she lifts her chin, defiantly, for him to answer.
He says, “Hong Na Ri-shi.” She can’t believe he knows her name. He asks if she can handle it? Another pause. Matter-of-factly, he declares that this situation is not something she can accept in this state. They should talk tomorrow. When her mind is clear and the day is sunny, they’ll talk. He tsks at her and stands up. He walks away and she asks her why he’s leaving when he said it's his house? She wonders if it’s true and says that it couldn't be. And what's with his accent? Which, of course, I can’t really tell because I don’t speak Korean.
Na Ri staggers upstairs. She flips on the light in her bedroom and looks around. She happily sinks onto the bed and sniffs the comforter deeply. She thinks of Nan Gil asking if she can handle it and declares that she can't even handle even 30,000 RKW. She feels like she’s losing this house, too. What else does she need to handle?
Outside, Nan Gil waits, looking at the house.
Na Ri heads into Oma’s room and sit at her vanity. She looks at Oma’s picture and smiles. You're still pretty, Oma. She tells Oma that she’s back. She asks Oma to show her how Oma smiles like a flower. Just once. That was a little sad.
Next morning, Nan Gil is dressed in a chef’s outfit – black rather than white – and begins to make the day’s dumpling shells. Mixing montage.

Nan Gil sets out the chalk sign for the day. The cooks arrive and, a typical chef, he begrudgingly greets them.
Robot museum with really huge statue of a robot outside. Duk Bong sits at his desk. Soon Rye stands next to him, obviously annoyed. Holding chopsticks, he opens the box and apologizes for making her do this type of work. Being a gopher when she’s his secretary. He explains that the owner of Hong Dumplings was very annoying when he met him in person, so he didn't want to stand in line. He stuffs a dumpling in his mouth and remarks on how good it tastes. So annoying.
He asks Soon Rye about a permit. She replies that they'll give the permit when the street where Hong Dumplings is located becomes an access road. But he (Nan Gil) still doesn't want to sell it. Duk Bong starts to loudly protest but stops when he sees her annoyance. He repeats, calmer, that this is why he asked her, Team Leader Kwon, to take care of it. She's lived in the area a long time and are similar in age to Shin Jung Nam (Uncle). She should be able to convince him. Or bribe him with a modern hanbok as a gift or something.
Soon Rye declares that the ownership has changed. When Duk Bong asks why, she tells him to take a look at the paperwork she’s given him. Owner is Go Nan Gil. The owner of Hong Dumplings? Why? He sighs with frustration and asks why again. Soon Rye has no reaction. After a moment, Duk Bong asks if that makes sense. Soon Rye rolls her eyes. He smiles slightly and declares that it must be a fraud.
Nan Gil is outside, practicing how to talk to Na Ri. No approach sounds right and he tosses the garden hose away in frustration.
Na Ri wakes to discover that her eyes won’t focus. She slaps her face several times. It doesn’t work. She tries to stand up, using the dresser, and knocks a jar of moisturizer on her foot. She yowls with pain. I've done that before. It does hurt. Nan Gil hears her moaning and quickly runs inside. Na Ri hops, holding her foot and whines, asking why she can’t see. She pats around and finds the jar, but can’t read what it is. She opens it and identifies the lotion by its smell: Product 37-A, 67,000 RKW. She’s amazed at her own memory.
Nan Gil stops outside her room and frantically knocks on the door, asking if there’s something wrong? Na Ri covers her mouth (to silence herself?) and wonders who it is. Nan Gil puts his ear to the door to try and figure out what’s going on. Na Ri recalls him telling her it’s a murder! A murder! She yelps an ‘Omo!’ This alarms Nan Gil more. She calls out that it's nothing. She wonders why he cares.
Nan Gil is still frantically trying to figure out what’s going on. Na Ri decides to meditate to fix her eyes. It doesn’t work. She shrieks in frustration. Nan Gil yells at her to open the door. She crawls over to the door and releases the lock. Kneeling down in front of her, he asks what’s wrong. Her eyes are closed and she declares that she can't see anything! He tells her to just open her eyes. She opens them and tells him that she can't see. She leans in, startling him a little, and asks if there’s something in her eyes. He notices an open bottle of pills (with several scattered on the floor). Immediately he thinks that she’s overdosed.
He quickly picks her up and rushes outside. Yong Kyu comes over to house, annoyed at how the other cooks are lazy. Seeing Nan Gil carrying Na Ri, he starts to freak out. Nan Gil tells him to go get a taxi. As Nan Gil hurries for the road, Na Ri puzzles over him.
♬ He's going, he's going ♬
♬ I keep looking at you ♬
On the road, Yong Kyu flags down a car, which happens to be driven by Duk Bong. He calls Duk Bong ‘Robert; and when Duk Bong rolls down the window, declares that there’s a medical emergency. Duk Bong tells them to get it. Nan Gil’s annoyed that it’s Duk Bong. Duk Bong tells him to just get in, since it looks urgent. Nan Gil can’t argue with that. He tells Na Ri to duck because they’re getting in the car.
♬ Other people say ♬
♬ This world is filled with liars ♬
Yong Kyu yells through the window for Nan Gil not to worry. He will take care of the restaurant. Nan Gil waves him away with annoyance. Nan Gil continues to watch Na Ri. Duk Bong begins to drive to the hospital.
♬ He's going, he's coming ♬
♬ He's coming closer softly ♬
Nan Gil asks what kind of medicine she took. She’s not sure what he means. Scolding, he says that he saw the bottle. They have to tell the hospital, so she should tell him. What medicine and how much of it did she take? She sighs and says that it's nothing much. Indignant, he says that whether it's something or nothing, what medicine did she take?! She snaps back that she took a sleeping pill! All natural. She couldn't sleep, so she took one. She tries to remember if she took another one later.
Duk Bong – who has been eavesdropping – says that there's no such a thing as all-natural sleeping pills. He asks if her speech slurred and dizzy. She whispers to Nan Gil, asking who Duk Bong is. He starts to introduce himself when Nan Gil tells her that she doesn't need to know. Heh. The dislike is mutual.
Indignant, Nan Gil says that Na Ri drank alcohol. It's basic knowledge you can't take sleeping pills after you drink. But she took two! She mutters that that's not the issue... Why can't she see? He asks if he’s a doctor? Why is she asking him that? She’s surprised he heard that. She was talking to herself. She tells him he has good hearing. Nan Gil sighs, frustrated.
They arrive at the hospital and Duk Bong slams on his brakes. Protectively, Nan Gil grabs Na Ri so that she doesn’t fly forward and hit the seat in front of her. He glares at Duk Bong. Duk Bong declares that they’ve arrived. Nan Gil says thank you – because it’s polite – and tells Na Ri that they’re at the hospital. He gets out of the car and hurries around to help Na Ri.
Na Ri climbs out of the car. She’s not wearing any shoes. Nan Gil picks her up again. Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ from ‘The Bodyguard’ starts to play.
♬ And I... ♬
♬ I will always love you ♬
Na Ri looks at Nan Gil, a little shocked at all the concern/care he’s showing. Particularly since they don’t know each other.
♬ I will always love you ♬
As he walks, her eyesight clears.
♬ I will always love you ♬
From his car, Duk Bong mutters that Nan Gil should just shoot a movie already.
At the door, Na Ri asks that Nan Gil please put her down. He stops and looks at her. She repeats her request, saying that she can see. He makes a face, adjusts her in his arms and doesn’t comply. She’s barefooted. Aw.
Inside the hospital, he calls out for some help. She drank and took sleeping pills. He tells a nurse that Na Ri took sleeping pills after drinking. Nurse directs Nan Gil to a bed and he puts Na Ri on it. But not very gently, so her head smacks the pillow. Na Ri yelps. I laugh. She glares at him.
Nurse asks where it hurts. Nan Gil repeats that Na Ri took sleeping pills after drinking alcohol. Na Ri mutters to herself that he should just advertise it to everyone... Then she tells the nurse that it was just for a brief moment. She’s fine now. Nurse asks if she has any other symptoms. Nan Gil looks down at Na Ri, concerned. His face says that she needs to tell the truth. Na Ri reluctantly says that she just feels a little dizzy.
Nurse asks the guardian, Nan Gil, to come fill out some forms. Na Ri declares that her waist hurts as well! She’s holding the same spot that Nan Gil was holding last night. Heh. She declares that that person is not her guardian. Nan Gil tells the nurse he’ll come fill it out and they walk away, ignoring her protest. Heh.
Duk Bong has come in the hospital. He and Nan Gil do the passing dance a couple of times. Both are annoyed at the other’s existence. Nan Gil goes to fill out the paperwork. Duk Bong approaches Na Ri and introduces himself as the one who just drove her, Kwon Duk Bong. She nods, understanding, and says thank you. Duk Bong’s face says that he was expecting more of a reaction. Heh. He repeats that he’s Kwon Duk Bong. Na Ri looks at him and says ‘yes,’ (she gets it). He repeats it a third time, this time gesturing for her to say her name. Reluctantly, she says her name.
Duk Bong asks if this was, perhaps, a suicide attempt? Indignant, Na Ri says it wasn’t. He tells her that it'll become habit to consume sleeping pills after drinking. She mutters in annoyance at another busybody. Duk Bong says that he knows the owner of Hong Dumplings very well. Does he? He asks who she is. What’s her relationship with Nan Gil?
Na Ri picks up that Duk Bong called Nan Gil the owner of Hong Dumplings. Defiant, she asks who Hong Dumplings’ owner is. He explains that the one who coolly ran while holding her is Go Nan Gil. He is the owner of Hong Dumplings. She’s slow to process it and clarifies that his name is Go Nam Gil? Duk Bong says that it's not Go Nam Gil, but Go Nan Gil. 'Nan' as in... he stops and tells her to forget it.
Amazed, he remarks that they were shooting a movie without even knowing each other? Na Ri wants to know why Go Nan Gil would be the owner of Hong Dumplings instead of Go Dumplings? Duk Bong doesn’t think that’s important, since it's the owner's choice. Annoyed, she demands that he stop saying ‘Hong Dumplings owner,’ ‘Hong Dumplings owner.’ Hong Dumplings isn't Go Nan Gil's Hong Dumplings. It's Hong Na Ri's Hong Dumplings.
Nan Gil arrives with a doctor. Doctor asks who the patient is. Seeing Duk Bong, he’s surprised at how pale he is. He starts to try and examine Duk Bong. Hehe. Nan Gil points him in Na Ri’s direction. Doctor turns on his pocket light to look in Na Ri’s eyes. She notices Nan Gil watching and glares at him. He doesn’t turn away. Doctor turns off the light and tells Na Ri to love herself. Nan Gil and Duk Bong look at him. Dramatically, Doctor says that you must love your body when you're young. If you suddenly can't see, it's a temporary vision loss. In most cases, it is caused by severe stress. Has Na Ri been under some difficult situation lately?
Doctor, Nurse, Nan Gil and Duk Bong look at Na Ri expectantly. She looks over at Nan Gil before answering that it’s not that. Sure it isn’t. Finding out your boyfriend of 10 years is cheating on you with the company harlot isn’t stressful at all. It's because there's a lot of work these days, so she couldn't sleep much. Doctor claps his hands and nods. Nan Gil’s face says he doesn’t believe it. Doctor declares that anxiety, insomnia, malnutrition... these things appear together hand in hand. Well… one of those may appear later than the others. Anyway, she should get tested.
Na Ri says that she’ll do it later. Nan Gil yells that she’ll get it right now! That startles everyone. More calmly, he asks what she was doing until her body became like this? How has she been living?! Na Ri huffs. And your ex wouldn’t have cared this much. Doctor agrees that she should. Since the guardian has paid for everything, they should go do the test. He starts to walk away again.
Na Ri says that Nan Gil isn’t her guardian. She’ll give them the money. Nurse asks Na Ri to follow her, adding that the guardian can stay outside. Na Ri can’t believe they’re not listening to her. Even though this is the emergency room, do they believe anyone who claims to be the guardian? Nurse points out that they’re family. Na Ri wants to know who said that. Nurse points to Nan Gil and says that he did. She wants to know with whom is she family? Nan Gil hurries away with Nurse, despite Na Ri’s loud protest. Hehe.
They do a CAT scan. Na Ri thinks about recent events: Nan Gil saying he’s not a tenant, but the house's owner. Duk Bong describing Nan Gil as the owner of Hong Dumplings. The nurse saying they’re family.
Nan Gil sits and waits for the test to be over. He sighs.
Duk Bong is on the phone, getting the 411 on Na Ri. She’s the daughter? Understood. Slight smile spreads on his face. What is he hatching?
Na Ri emerges from the CAT scan room, slamming the door behind her. Nan Gil stands. Na Ri orders him to follow her. Nurse comes out and tells Nan Gil to please wait for a moment. He smiles and bows to the nurse. Na Ri turns around, glaring at him. That stops his smiling. She keeps walking and he follows her, his hands in his vest pocket. Duk Bong spots them and follows.
They head out onto a roof. She asks why Nan Gil paid for her hospital fees? What does it matter to him, Go Nam Gil? Whether she’s under stress, have malnutrition or insomnia, it's none of his business. It's not like they’re family. Nan Gil mutters to himself: She was shivering from fear of not being able to see. Now that he’s revived her... Protesting, Na Ri asks when she was shivering. Mimicking her earlier, he comments that she heard him. He was just talking to himself. She must have good ears. Complete with sarcastic hand gestures to emphasize the ears. Heh. She huffs because she caught what he did.
Nan Gil isn’t meeting her eyes. Less indignantly, she asks why he said that they’re family. He sighs deeply and looks at her. She doesn’t make him answer, but instead says they should just get to the point. He needs to get out of her house. He asks why he should get out? Almost grimacing, she smiles and tells him not to use banmal. It’s clear she’s his noona. She waves it away and declares that they’re not family. You're family when you live with them. You're family when you have memories to share.
She gets an idea. Her father. Nan Gil frowns at her. Did Hong Sung Kyu send him? Since Oma passed away, is he going after the restaurant? Nan Gil remains expressionless. Na Ri wants to know how Abeoji knew. He hasn't contacted them in decades. Nan Gil repeats, ‘Abeoji.’ She repeats her father’s name then demands to know what his real name is. It's not Go Nam Gil. He agrees that it isn’t. She can’t believe he admitted it. He says, “Go Nan Gil. It's not Nam Gil, but Nan Gil.”
Na Ri isn’t about to lose face by apologizing for getting his name wrong. She asks what what his relationship with her father? Did Abeoji say he owns Hong Dumplings? Again, Nan Gil avoids answering, pointing out that Na Ri was screaming at the top of her lungs saying Hong Dumplings belongs to Hong Na Ri. He says that Oma would be very sad to hear her say that it’s Hong skyu’s Hong Dumplings. Oma said that it's Hong Na Ri's Hong Dumplings. Na Ri wants to know who he is to talk about her mom? What does he know?
She tells him to forget it. She demands that he out of Oma and her house. A little less patient, Nan Gil repeats that he said it’s his house. He won’t go. She wants to know who he is that he keeps saying that her house is his? Nan Gil sighs slightly and steps closer to her. He answers “Abeoji-a.” She crows that she was right about her father sending him. He clarifies. Not her father, Hong Sung Kyu. *He’s* her Abeoji.
She looks at him like he’s crazy. And it does sound pretty crazy, particularly because he’s younger than her. He declares that he is… Hong Na Ri's stepfather. She can’t believe it, but he’s serious.
Thoughts
I like it. I like it a lot. As I knew I would. As always, I love the two leads and their takes on their characters. I love that Hong Na Ri is mature enough not to go attack her boyfriend and his mistress, even though she wanted to, and that she handled the break up in a (mostly) dignified manner. I love that she’s confident even when she’s drunk and was really annoyed at her cheating boyfriend that he wouldn’t even give her the satisfaction of breaking up with him in a sophisticated manner. I particularly love that she kicked Dong Jin to the curb once she discovered it and did it in front of Oma so that she’d have Oma metaphorically backing up her decision. I also love that she doesn’t take a hit in her self-confidence over being cheated on and didn’t have a problem going toe-to-toe with Nan Gil.
And speaking of Nan Gil, I really love him already. He’s very even keeled, which I really like. Plus, he really seems to care about Na Ri, even though this is the first time they were meeting. He’s not too proud to accept rather than refuse a ride from Duk Bong and doesn’t take Na Ri’s insults seriously. He also seems to be pretty good natured – except where his restaurant is concerned, although I wonder if that’s more because he doesn’t like having to be the boss, rather than just being a sour chef. I like that he’s been respectful of Oma and Na Ri; he has kept the house up and kept it the same as when Oma was alive.
I do wonder about his relationship with Oma. Why did they end up getting married? Was he really in love with her? Or was there something else going on? His reaction to Duk Bong and the fact that his ownership of Hong Dumplings is holding up Duk Bong’s development project makes me wondering if that’s not part of the reason why Oma and Nan Gil got married, so that Nan Gil would protect Oma’s (and Na Ri’s ) home and business.
I wonder what his appearance at the funeral means and why he didn’t identify himself then. Why *has* he been avoiding telling her?
I also have to say that I really don’t like Yeo Joo. Not solely because she cheated with Na Ri’s fiancé, but that she enjoyed doing it. And that’s she’s incredibly manipulative as she’s doing it. Dong Jin is wrapped around her finger and she’s loving every minute of it. I hate manipulative women like that, so I don’t think I would like her even if she hadn’t have cheated with Dong Jin. Plus, she has no respect for other women, since Dong Jin isn’t the first man that she’s two-timed with.
We don’t have too much info on Duk Bong yet, so I’m reserving judgment until I know more.
Side note: I wanted to go a little more in-depth into the Korean concept of a stewardess.
When I was recently in Korea, I spoke with several high school girls whose career goal was to be a stewardess. The montage in the beginning isn’t really an exaggeration; being an Asian stewardesses means you are part of an elite work force. (Have you ever arrived at 2 am for a 9 am interview?)
And when I investigated, it made some sense: A new stewardess earns about 3 times as much as someone working in a department store (and more money than I do). It is also a career path where it is acceptable for women to work. Acceptable jobs are less common in Korea and the glass ceiling is a lot lower than in the US.
The job is not viewed like an American stewardess. It’s much more elite. In the States, to be a stewardess, all you need is a high school diploma (or GED) and a clean record. You can be between 19 and 60 years old and should be well-groomed.
In Korea, a college diploma is required. For Korean Airlines, they only want the most beautiful and youthful-looking candidates with straight, white teeth, so they set their maximum age to become a stewardess at 27, since later than that is considered past a woman's prime beauty age. Korean Air’s job application is very pointed in its questions about appearance.
Here’s some beauty tips from Korean stewardesses:
