She Was Pretty Episode 5 Recap

Eotteokay! Hye Jin was caught in a pickle with Sung Joon last episode. What will happen? I guess I’ll have to watch the episode. Waiting a week has been rough!

Episode starts with Hye Jin at Sung Joon’s door, trying to figure out his code. She’s so stressed about going in and getting her phone – so Sung Joon won’t see the pictures of her and Ha Ri together – that she starts biting her teeth together. Don’t normally see people do that because of stress. She thinks and wonder if it’s possibly…

Flashback to kid Hye Jin singing Sung Joon ‘Happy Birthday.’ He blows out the candles and tells her that it’s not his birthday. Young Hye Jin is surprised. He uses today's date for his locker, his bicycle lock and all his other locks. She asks what the numbers mean. Proudly, Sung Joon declares that it’s his favorite day out of the whole year. It's the International Left-hander's Day. What an oddball. Hye Jin is impressed that there’s a day like that. Sung Joon smiles and takes big scoops of icing from the cake.

Back in the present, Hye Jin nods that this is it. She reaches into her purse and pulls out her planner. The date is circled. She keys in 0813 (for the date) and it works. She’s able to get inside his apartment. At least that part of him hasn’t changed.

As she walks by the couch on her way to the puzzle, Sung Joon twitches. He wakes and is surprised to find himself in his apartment. He notices Hye Jin leaning in towards the puzzle. She smiles at the space where her piece is. Sung Joon surprises her and she knocks the puzzle over. She almost steps on the glass and he grabs her toward him. She’s all but 5 seconds before she pulls back her hands (in a way that says let go!)

Sung Joon looks down at the shattered puzzle and grimaces. I expected him to yell at her, but instead. He repeats himself. Why is she in his home? Okay, that was a little testy (but gentler). She says a bunch of unintelligible things – like she’s only saying every 4th word – but Sung Joon is able to understand: After dinner, he left first and she came out to make a call but he passed out outside. She nods vehemently. So she brought him purposely to the inside of his house. He asks if she did it all herself. She replies that she wasn’t alone. She starts to call Shin Hyuk ‘that weirdo’ but stops and calls him ‘Editor Kim.’ Sung Joon asks where Shin Hyuk is and Hye Jin replies that Shin Hyuk left first.

Sung Joon asks why Hye Jin didn’t leave. She replies that she was just about to! He sighs and puts his hands in his pockets. He asks how they got in his house. Hye Jin stammers the ca..card key. So she went through his wallet? Without his permission? He’s still not yelling, which is a good sign. But how was she supposed to get his permission when he’s *passed out* and unresponsive? She replies that there was no other way. Heh.

He seems strangely calm about all this. Calm and understanding. It’s weird. He asks if she was planning on leaving him alone until he woke up. Asking the guard on duty to take care of him, then leaving? Hye Jin ‘yes,’ is almost indignant in response to that. She stutters that she will be going. But she remembers the broken glass and starts to try and clean it up. I really hate how nervous she gets around him now. She starts to pick up some off the glass. Sung Joon grabs her wrist and pulls her away from it, telling her to just keep her hands off.

Hye Jin protests that she should clean up what's broken. Sung Joon repeats that it's okay so she just shouldn’t touch it and go. She bows deeply and starts to walk to wrong direction. Sung Joon still has a hold of her wrist and pulls her back. He points with his thumb over his shoulder, saying that the door is that way. She mumbles that she will him Monday and then runs out of the apartment.

Outside his apartment, she pauses to catch her breath. She is wearing one of his shoes. She asks herself if her liver is still attached. (The liver is the traditional Korean site for courage or nerve.) That’s when she looks down and notices his shoe. She starts to pace because she knows that this means she has to go back *in* the apartment, but she’s saved when Sung Joon opens the door and holds a stick out the door with her shoe on it. Really? You couldn’t just hand it to her? You had to use a stick, like it’s contaminated? She looks at it, shocked. He shakes the stick, silently telling her to take the stick. As she switches the shoes, she mumbles that she put on the wrong shoe. He doesn’t say anything but takes the stick (and shoe) back inside and shuts the door loudly. As she puts on her shoe, she wonders what kind of man passes out from a shot of alcohol? Maybe it's him who has a bad liver. She runs when Sung Joon opens the door again.

Now alone in his apartment, Sung Joon sits and looks at the Mason jar with the puzzle pieces in it. Why didn’t you just put it back together?

Ha Ri stares longingly at a pair of shoes. They are cute. She’s debating whether to buy them. One of her Oppas calls, but when he tells her to come play with him, she says that she can’t. She has to go somewhere amazing. Maybe next time. Ha Ri decides to get the shoes and asks for size 250 (US size 8.5). http://www.yesstyle.com/en/shoe-size/help/section.html/hsi.798
Sales person says that they don’t have it in that size. Only the pair on display, size 245. Which I could wear, probably. Ha Ri debates some more. When she decides to get it, salesgirl says that the shoes runs a little small so even if she loves it now, it will hurt when she wears it. But it definitely fit me. I wear size 240. Ha Ri declares that it’s her goddess philosophy. She has to have everything she loves. Uh-oh. I smell danger coming. Because Sung Joon is something that she loves.

After buying the shoes, Ha Ri stops by Hye Jin’s family home. Appa sees her, breaks out into a big smile and declares that his daughter is here. Aw. When they eat, Oma feeds her, just a mother would. Aw, that’s nice, since Ha Ri’s family are just jerks. Hye Jin arrives, saying that she’s home, and it’s like no one notices. She repeats herself, with no one noticing. Finally she yells loudly that she’s home, startling them into noticing her.

Appa tells her to sit. Hye Jin does, wearing a frown. After all, this was the party to celebrate her new job and they started eating without her. Hye Rin looks at her and declares that there are people like her (and Ha Ri) who exist and then there are people who look bad no matter what they do (meaning Hye Jin). Hye Jin holds back the urge to smack her dongsaeng, but instead tells Hye Rin to live it up while she can. She (Hye Jin) was about Hye Rin’s age when the adverse change started to happen. Probably soon, Hye Rin too will look just like her! The way she says the end, it’s a verbal sticking her tongue out at her sister. Hye Rin, of course, gets offended and declares that she will never be like Hye Jin! She grabs a facial massager – which I have never seen before, it is weird – and starts rolling her face with it. Ha Ri and Appa laugh. Hye Jin smiles and tells Hye Rin to keep it up. No matter what they both take after Appa.

Oma takes issue with what they’re saying. She says that she’s never seen anyone as handsome as her husband. She affectionately pats Appa’s cheeks. Appa laughs. Looking at Appa, Hye Rin asks him to promise, if she turns out like Hye Jin, to sell his printing press and get her plastic surgery. Appa cups his face with his hands and declares that Hye Rin is pretty, pretty. Hye Rin isn’t comforted.

Hye Jin is hunting through some boxes. She calls out for her baggy pants. She finally finds them, but not before knocking over some boxes. One of them is all of her cards from Sung Joon. She finds many certificates of merit that she earned and thinks about how she used to dream of becoming a children’s book author, so that she can bring happiness to everyone. I wonder what happened to that dream. She comes across some of her old stories and as she’s looking, the puzzle piece falls out from in between the pages. Hye Jin can’t believe that it’s still there. She turns it over and there’s an umbrella on the back.

Flashback to Sung Joon giving her the piece. Him starting to leave and then hurrying back to give her a kiss. His voiceover thanks her for being his umbrella all this time. When they meet again, he will be her umbrella. Aw, that kind of makes me really sad, because he’s definitely breaking his word, so far.

In the present, ‘Close to You’ plays as Hye Jin looks at the piece. She says to herself that back then, they couldn't have imagined meeting again like this.

As Hye Jin and Ha Ri drive home, Ha Ri yells at Hye Jin for not stopping her from over-eating. She starts to wave her hand back and forth, to exercise the calories away. Hye Jin groans that she’s so annoying. Pretty ones are the worst. Phone call. It’s Seol calling. She says that she’s in the middle of a very important meeting – and mani-pedi – and can't move right now. So, she needs Hye Jin to go over to the office and send her some files. There’s a USB on her desk. Hye Jin agrees and Seol tells her that she can’t tell anyone about this. Hye Jin says that she won’t.

When Hye Jin asks Ha Ri to drop her at work, Ha Ri wants to know why someone is making Hye Jin do their work for them? It’s ridiculous! Hye Jin mutters that it’s on the way home anyway so Ha Ri yells at her for agreeing and being way too nice. A song comes on the radio that’s a favorite of both of them when they were little. She starts singing to it (and doing hand motions) as Ha Ri demands that Hye Jin call them back right now and tell them to do it themselves! They'll think Hye Jin’s a pushover if she doesn't! Hye Jin ignores her and keeps singing and soon Ha Ri is singing along.

Oma is texting, talking about Ha Ri.

She's even prettier, isn't she? As if someone would doubt that she's your daughter, I feel like I'm looking at you and get startled time to time. Hye Jung, you're doing well, right? I miss you. I will keep you posted.

What?! Ha Ri’s mother is still alive? Does that mean Dad drove her away? That’s even worse!

Hye Jin does what Seol asks. As she’s about to leave, she sees that Sung Joon’s lights are still on. She decides to turn them off. But she gets distracted by the remote which blacks out the windows. Then she sees his timer and channels a little bit of Sung Joon while sitting in his chair. She plays with the mannequin and one of the arms falls off. As she tries to put it back on, a phone rings and Sung Joon answers it (in English). She panics and hides in his closet.

Inside the closet, she’s chomping her teeth, so she puts her hand over her mouth to silence it. Sung Joon sits at his desk. She hears him says that The Most Korea will not be ceasing publication after 3 months. Sung Joon hangs up and drops his phone on his desk. He exhales loudly and rests his forehead in his hands. Eventually, he gets up and heads to the closet. He doesn’t open it wide enough to see her, but then suddenly does. She yelps and throws the mannequin arm at him. He sighs and says that he’s sure she has an explanation.

More Hye Jin stuttering. I will really be glad when she stops with the stuttering. She says that she came in to do some work and his light was on… she didn't know he was there. She mentions the mannequin and starts to try to put the arm back. He stops her and asks how much of the conversation she understood. She got the part about the magazine ending. He steps forward and calmly tells her to listen carefully. If anyone in the team hears about this, he will assume that it came from her and hold her responsible. That’s not fair. If she doesn’t blab about it, it won't be an issue so, to put it simply, keep her mouth shut. She nods vigorously. He tells to leave, if she understood, but then stops her because she’s still holding the mannequin arm. She puts it on his desk and quickly leaves.

As she exits, there’s a yank on her purse. She sighs and says that her sole strong point is that she’s tight-lipped. She won't tell anyone so please let her go. She looks behind her and it isn’t Sung Joon; it’s her purse caught in the door. She looks over at Sung Joon, who sighs and nods like he’s not surprised anymore. She quickly pulls her purse free and leaves, not noticing that The Puzzle Piece is now on the floor.

Ha Ri, after leaving Hye Jin, headed for the gym. She groans that she overdid it. Sung Joon walks by. He asks if she’s done exercising. If he’d known, he would have come at the same time as her. She lies and says that she just got there. So they start to exercise together. Ha Ri struggles but pretends like she’s not dying.

As they leave, Sung Joon tells her that she looks tired today. Didn't she get any rest this weekend? She protests that she’s not tired and feels great after all that exercising. She asks where he parked. He didn’t drive, so she offers to give him a ride. He tells her to go on; she looks really tired. Ha Ri isn’t going to take ‘no’ for an answer.

Sung Joon notices an eyelash on her cheek and helps her pick it off. Cheesy! Of course, Ha Ri is affected. He asks what her wish is. She’s clueless and he reminds her about what they did when they were kids. He admits it’s cheesy but you have nothing to lose. Ha Ri isn’t sure what to wish for, so Sung Joon declares that he will do it. He closes his eyes and concentrates on his wish. Then he blows the eyelash away. He tells Ha Ri that if his wish comes true, he will treat her. He should offer at least that much as compensation to the eyelash provider. I wonder what his wish was… I’m thinking that it’s about the magazine.

Joon Woo is pushing his bike down the street – instead of riding it. Maybe it’s in a no-riding zone. He spots Sung Joon with Ha Ri and thinks that the Deputy Chief Editor has a girlfriend.

Ha Ri is driving, so her and Sung Joon’s arms keep colliding… since he’s left-handed. He tells her that he might hit her unintentionally and asks for her generous understanding in the future too. She chuckles. A song that Sung Joon likes comes on the radio. Heath Ledger sang this in that movie. Is he referring to ‘10 Things I Hate About You’? Neither one of them can remember the name of the movie.

It gets to the chorus and Sung Joon starts to sing. It’s not melodious at all.

♫ I love you, baby ♫

Oh my gosh. I think my ears are going to start bleeding. Ha Ri looks at him like he’s a little weird.

♫ And if it's quite alright, I need you baby. To warm my lonely night ♫

As his voice cracks, Ha Ri starts to laugh.

♫ I love you baby. Trust in me when I say♫

She asks him why his singing is so bad! He smiles and tells her that it’s not that bad! Listen.

More bad singing.

♫ I love you. And if it's quite alright, I need you♫

She reaches over to put her hand over his mouth, telling him to stop it, stop it, stop it! They’re both laughing. He asks if he doesn’t sing really well? This song. He keeps singing to her, even as she groans.

They’ve reached Sung Joon’s house. Ha Ri is wiping away tears, since she laughed so much that she’s crying. Sung Joon declares that in that case, every time she cries, he’s gonna have to sing to her. Ha Ri starts to wave goodbye when they’re interrupted by the doorman. He has a package for Sung Joon and tells Sung Joon that his girlfriend's a real beauty. She waves her hands and protests that she’s not his girlfriend though. Sung Joon asks what she is, then. Is she his boyfriend? She protests that that’s not what she meant. He softly smiles and tells her to go home; she must be tired. He smiles as he watches her drive away.

When Ha Ri arrives home, Hye Jin asks why she exercised for so long? Is she going to the Olympics? Ha Ri acts like she wasn’t aware that she was gone that long. Hye Jin mentions that she ran into Sung Joon at work. It's not close to the deadline so he must work on the weekends too. Ha Ri avoids the conversation by going to wash up. Confess! Confess!

Next day, Ha Ri gets the rundown on Shin Hyuk as he walks through the lobby. He's been a guest with them for a year but nobody knows anything specific about him. They just vaguely assume that he's a son from a wealthy family. Someone passes her the day’s reservation list and is surprised when Shin Hyuk declares ‘Right!’ And we get treated to one of his weird faces. He is right! She’s the employee that thought he was homeless. She bows deeply and apologizes again. He must have been really offended. He sighs deeply and says that of course he was. It hurt so much. After all, she called him a homeless beggar. He looks so indignant.

Ha Ri smiles awkwardly. He looks at her and asks if, when she apologizes, smiling like that, all the other guys just forgive her, don't they? He laughs as he asks the question. Like he can’t believe that they fall for it. Wow, he is not letting her off the hook. She’s surprised: “Excuse me?” He clarifies that it’s because she’s so pretty and beautiful. And then he changes the subject – like he likes to do – he pulls out his mp3 player and says that since she found his lifeline, he will call it even (toong). He holds his fist up for a bump, declaring “Toong.” She’s puzzled. He looks at the guy behind the front desk as he points to his fist and whines “toong!” Heh. I love him so much. Guy signals fist-bump at Ha Ri, so she gives Shin Hyuk a fist bump.

Shin Hyuk smiles and tells Ha Ri that if they meet again, they should acknowledge each other. She nods awkwardly. He asks for a high five and waves his fingers (like they’re a fish swimming) at her to get her to hold up her hand so he can slap it. Which makes me crack up. He smiles and announces that he’s off. And his expression – like he’s studying her – didn’t change the entire time. Ha Ri stares after him and says that he doesn't seem like a well-off family's son. Why, because he’s not stuck up? I think he acts exactly like a chaebol’s son.

Sung Joon is reading his tablet after getting his coffee – I wonder if he drank the vase water again – and waiting at a light to cross the street.Hye Jin is a few people down from him. Lost in thought, she doesn’t notice him either. The light changes, which wakes her out of her thoughts. She says “It's a go!” which gets Sung Joon’s attention – since that’s what *his* Hye Jin always would say at a green light. He looks around to see who said it and this time sees Hye Jin. He’s puzzled to see his intern. Whose name is Hye Jin.

They end up in the same elevator together. She bows and pleasantly greets him. He’s uncomfortable and aloof. But while they ride the elevator, he glances over at her. thinking. When he looks at the door, she glances at him, puzzled. He looks over at her again – that’s one slow elevator – and notices the cut on her finger, which makes him realize that she cut herself. Flashback to the blood on the glass and the floor. He opens his door to catch Hye Jin, but she’s run away. In the present, this time, Hye Jin notices Sung Joon looking at her finger. He catches her looking at him and still doesn’t say anything. He looks away and clears his throat loudly.

Then, finally he starts to say something about the glass, but the elevator doors open. Immediately he stops and when she asks him what he was saying about the glass, he quickly says that it’s nothing and exits the elevator. Practically runs. As they walk toward the office, he glances behind him – like he’s uncomfortable with Hye Jin being behind him – and she wonders why he's acting so strangely. Is he worried about that puzzle? She reaches in her pockets for the puzzle piece and realizes that it’s not there. She starts to freak out as she searches all her pockets. Should have put it some place secure, like a zippered pocket in your purse. Especially since it’s *so important.* She realizes when she lost it: exiting Sung Joon’s office.

She hurries into the office and sees the cleaning lady. She asks the ajumeoni if she found a puzzle piece while cleaning. Ajumeoni is clueless about the word ‘puzzle’ (which is the Koreanized version of the English word ‘puzzle.’) Hye Jin describes it and ajumeoni recognizes it, but she hasn’t seen it. Hye Jin starts to really freak out because if Sung Joon sees it, it’s over!

After glancing fearfully in Sung Joon’s direction, Hye Jin starts to crawl around the floor, looking for the puzzle piece. She startles Eun Yung – who, in my opinion, overreacts by sagging to the floor out of shock. Seon Min and Seol give her strange looks. Finally she finds it hiding under something. She is able to get it out with a ruler – which starts a singing chorus of Pachobel’s Cannon in D – but before she can grab it, Poong Ho kicks it… into Sung Joon’s office. A pacing Sung Joon steps on it and it sticks to his shoe. Those must be some sticky soles. Horrified, she looks up at him. At the same time, he looks down and it startled. Her face is pretty scary right there. She cringes and whines, asking ‘Eotteokay’?

Hye Jin now has psycho eyes as she looks in Sung Joon’s direction, trying to figure out how to get the piece back. She chomps her teeth together nervously. A bike messenger arrives with mail for Sung Joon. Hye Jin quickly (and loudly) gets it for Sung Joon. Shin Hyuk notices her weird behavior – finally. Hye Jin hurries into Sung Joon’s office and almost calmly holds out the envelope to him. He doesn’t look up from his work and just tells her to leave on his desk and go. So very polite and respectful, as always. A boss is totally okay to say this type of thing; it’s just in *how* you say it that it’s either rude or respectful. Sung Joon is rude.

Hye Jin does and starts glancing around the floor for the puzzle piece. Sung Joon notices and asks what she’s looking at: Is there something for her to see? She intensely thinks that there *is* something for her to see. But she instead asks if he’d like a coffee. He sarcastically holds up his coffee. She has to leave his office, but first makes a pencil fall on the floor. She leaps to the floor ‘to get it’ and tries to pull the piece off of Sung Joon’s shoe. He keeps moving his foot so she can’t and quickly notices that she’s under his desk. He leans under the desk, startling her as he asks what she’s doing. She acts like she was down there to grab the pencil. She bows to leave.

Hye Jin cringes and doesn’t leave. She addresses Sung Joon with his title. He sighs, closes the file he was looking at, puts his hand in his chin and impatiently looks up at her. She notes that his shoes are slightly dirty; shall she clean them for him? She’s really good at polishing shoes. Poong Ho enters and interrupts, needing a signature. Sung Joon tells her that he doesn’t like wearing shiny shoes. Poong Ho hears about the shoe polishing and tells Hye Jin to polish his shoes.

Hye Jin gets to polishing Poong Ho’s shoes… and sets the polish on fire. Luckily it doesn’t damage the shoe or is noticeable, because the shoes are black. Sung Joon exits his office and as he walks across the room, the puzzle piece comes loose. Immediately Sung Joon notices that something is different. Although why he didn’t notice when the piece got stuck to his shoe, I don’t know. That’s when I notice these things. Hye Jin cringes and closes her eyes, sure she’s discovered. Sung Joon starts to look behind him, when Shin Hyuk grabs him in a hug. And I roll.

The whole office is stunned at how weird Shin Hyuk is. Although Joon Woo is smiling. What does that mean? As Sung Joon beats on Shin Hyuk to let him go, demanding to know what he’s doing, Shin Hyuk deftly snags the puzzle piece under his shoe. Puzzle piece secure, Shin Hyuk lets go. Sung Joon tries to nonchalantly ask why the hug, noting that he didn't think their relationship was that close.

Straight-faced, like this was a completely normal thing to do, Shin Hyuk says that he’s in the middle of writing an article on bromance and he didn't really understand the feelings involved so... To the room, Shin Hyuk protests that it doeon't work! Writing on bromance when he loves women so much! He finishes the sentence by placing his hand on his chest and with a smile, like, of course everyone can understand that. He suggests that maybe he could understand the feelings if he hugged Sung Joon once more?

Shin Hyuk goes in for a second hug – his face completely innocent. Sung Joon shoves him away with a glare. Shin Hyuk laughs loudly and says – in a serious voice – that he’s joking. Sung Joon sarcastically laughs and says that he didn't think their relationship was that close, to be joking like that. A hurt look on Shin Hyuk’s face, he asks, “Really?” Sung Joon sourly answers “Of course,” and walks away. Shin Hyuk turns in Hye Jin’s direction, with a pained look on his face, and says that he guesses so.

Shin Hyuk snaps his fingers to get Hye Jin’s attention and dramatically points down. He lifts his shoe to reveal the puzzle piece. Hye Jin gasps. He smiles smugly and walks to his desk, dragging the piece with him. Why he couldn’t just pick it up off the floor…

Later, Hye Jin and Shin Hyuk are at a pojangmacha. Shin Hyuk pulls out the puzzle piece – a little proud of himself – and asks if this was what she spent all day looking for. He passes it back to a smiling Hye Jin. She asks how he knew she was looking for it. Trying to look innocent, he says that he saw earlier, when she was talking to the cleaning lady. Flashback to him overhearing the conversation and laughing to himself. When a girl amuses you this much, you like her. Hye Jin nods with understanding and starts to put the puzzle piece in her pocket. Where it got lost before.

Pouring himself some Soju – which she should be doing – he casually asks if Sung Joon seeing the piece will reveal everything… That Jackson's his elementary school classmate and first love, Kim Hye Jin? He looks at her and waits for her reaction. She starts to ask how he knew that. He finishes her question, with that same innocent face (smile added).

Flashback to drunk Hye Jin saying that she’s that Kim Hye Jin! Kim Hye Jin! Shin Hyuk grabs the phone and, with frustration, asks why she keeps emphasizing her name. He protests that the call ended a while back. She grabs the phone back and tells Sung Joon that she lived next door to him… Shin Hyuk sighs and rolls his eyes. Hye Jin moans that she’s his elementary school classmate! Which gets Shin Hyuk’s attention. The one he first kissed. His first love! He’s shocked at this, as Hye Jin slaps her chest and says that it’s all her. Her. Kim Hye Jin. She lets the hand holding the phone drop and yells that Sung Joon is a jerk! Then she passes out into Shin Hyuk. He sighs, asking himself what he’s going to do with her.

Shin Hyuk protests that she kept saying that even after the call ended. Hye Jin drinks a shot of Soju. She sighs and says that she's glad this happened actually. All this time, she couldn't tell anyone and thought she was going to die from the burden of keeping it a secret. Good riddance. Shin Hyuk asks why she’s pretending to be something else. Because she's his employee and he's her boss? She smiles and shakes her head. Truth is, in this way and that, she’s sort of pathetic right now. Shin Hyuk frowns at her describing herself that way. And so do I. She’s not pathetic. So that's why she’s working hard to keep the secret.

Hye Jin pours herself another glass of Soju. I thought it was polite to do it for the other person. Both of them are not doing this… She continues that the Kim Hye Jin that Sung Joon remembers was quite the amazing kid. She was really popular and studied well too. Shin Hyuk’s face says that he’s irritated that she thinks of herself like this. He takes a drink of Soju. She was the one everyone wanted to be paired with and was the type to be praised wherever she went.

Hye Jin tells him that he probably won't believe it but when she was young, she was actually really pretty. As he pours himself another glass he tells her that she still is now. When she asks what he said, he looks her straight in the eye and tells her that he said she’s pretty. Even now. He drinks the Soju. She tells him that he’s quite kind. He knows how to comfort a person. He answers that it’s the truth though. Still not believing that he’s actually sincere, she thanks him heartily – like he’s saying it just to be kind.

She says that she has something to apologize about. She says that last time, what she mistakenly said, she’s sorry. He asks which mistake she means. Not like there was only one or two. Solemnly, she says it’s about his dongsaeng. He nods like he didn’t know that this is what she meant and looks down. Hye Jin says that he’s always so lively and looks like he has no worries. She didn't even imagine that he’d have that kind of wound. She apologizes again. He answers that she didn't know. He ends the sentence with his chipper smile. I’m starting to hate that smile. It hides his pain.

Hye Jin tells him that from now on, he can think of her as his dongsaeng. He’s surprised. She’s serious. She’ll respect him as an older brother from now on. Why not? He protests and laughs – a little awkward, because that’s not really how he feels about her. But then he asks – his face full of mischief – if his dongsaeng will make him a ssam (lettuce wrap). He blinks innocently and she goes along. She good-naturedly obeys as he tells her exactly what to include.

Sung Joon is pensively driving in his car. Stopped at a light, he glances over and spots Hye Jin feeding Shin Hyuk the lettuce wrap. He looks a little unsettles. He watches as Shin Hyuk pretends to be hurt, Hye Jin worries and then realizes that he’s joking. She slaps him as he laughs, mouth still full. This totally looks like they’re dating, or at least liking each other, because this is what people do when they like each other. A horn honking gets Sung Joon’s attention and he’s forced to drive away. His face says that he’s really bothered by what he just saw and doesn’t understand why it bothers him.

Shin Hyuk asks what Hye Jin is going to do if Sung Joon recognizes her first. She answers that it’s impossible. It’ll never happen because Sung Joon thinks someone else is his first love, Kim Hye Jin. Shin Hyuk is a little shocked: What is she talking about? He thinks Jackson is someone else? Who? Hye Jin answers that it’s just someone, her other half. Shin Hyuk wants to know what she means. Other half? She can clone yourself? Is she that wizard Meoteol? The wizard Meoteol is a cartoon that aired in the late 80’s which was a re-telling of a traditional Korean folktale. She laughs and declares that it’s something like that.

Her other half is working out at the gym. Please don’t tell me that you’re going to pretend to be just starting again. She keeps glancing towards the entrance. She wonders if he’s not coming today. A guy who looks like him steps onto a treadmill. Ha Ri eagerly goes over to say hello but stops (looking disappointed) when she realizes it’s not him.

Shin Hyuk is at the supermarket. He’s buying what looks like ice cream and says that he’s 400 Won short. He smiles at the checker and says that maybe she can give me a discount. She’s not going for it, so he smiles and says that, of course, that won't work. He’s crazy. Ha Ri arrives behind him and – after using the pay feature on her phone – says that she’ll pay his. He's impressed. She looks at him and says that they’re now even. He says that, if that’s the case, let him get some mini kimchi, too.

Ha Ri watches as Shin Hyuk starts to eat his ramen. She asks why he doesn’t just do it at the hotel, since they’d just do it as part of the service. He declares that this ramen is the kind that you eat after getting drunk. It is the unlikeliest of all delicious foods. But you don’t look very drunk. He chuckles and enthusiastically eats. As he chews, fighting the hot noodles in his full mouth, Ha Ri wonders if he’s really the son of some chaebol? He's severely modest. He’s enjoying the noodles. Staring longingly at them, Ha Ri licks her lips.

Soon, she’s the one eating her own carton of noodles, with Shin Hyuk watching, smiling and nodding with appreciation at the zeal with which she finishes them off. She gets a phone call and calls Hye Jin ‘Wifey.’ Shin Hyuk is shocked that Ha Ri has a wife (is gay). It’s an inconsequential conversation where they agree to meet over at the hotel. Cutesy voice as she hangs up. Shin Hyuk smiles and conspiratorially says that her tastes swing that way! Many different varieties of people exist in this world. Sincerely, but jovially, he says that he fully respects that diversity. He ends the sentence with that pleasant, polite smile that he does.

Ha Ri asks what he’s talking about; what tastes? She thinks and realizes that he thinks that Wifey is her girl friend. She protests that it’s not like that! It's just her friend who she lives with. Her best friend for life who is closer to her than a sister. Shin Hyuk loudly laughs and declares that it’s a relief. With her looks, she should be out there making men's hearts flutter. He smiles and points at the ramen. Like he’s urging her to eat more. Ha Ri realizes what she’s done – with Shin Hyuk pleasantly nodding that she *did* eat all of it. Not that it’s really that much at all. He gives her a thumbs-up and she yells at him, whining that he should have stopped her!

Now they’re walking, with Ha Ri moaning some more. He tells her that she only had a cup ramen. No big deal. He gives one of his chipper smiles as he says good night. She starts to look around for Hye Jin. He gets her attention and throws her some gum, calling it dessert. She laughs and he smiles and waves goodbye. Hye Jin arrives, just missing Shin Hyuk, and Ha Ri describes him as the suite room client that she made a huge mistake with. Hye Jin groans and says that she’s curious of how he looks.

Ha Ri smells the alcohol on Hye Jin and asks if she was drinking. Ha Ri shares her gum. She asks who Hye Jin drank with. Hye Jin describes Shin Hyuk as their team's weirdo reporter. Ha Ri asks if it’s that weirdo who she couldn't stand because he made fun of her all the time. Since when did she get close to him? Hye Jin is surprised, too. They somehow just did.

Next day, Ha Ri goes to pick up Sung Joon’s jacket from the hotel cleaners. They found a receipt in it. Ha Ri is going to throw it away, but Lady says that there was something on it. Ha Ri looks at it. It’s a drawing of her with the pineapple from the bar, yelling, Disgraceful, disgraceful!” She chuckles.

Ha Ri’s wearing the new too-small shoes. An Oppa is there to take her out. He notices the shoes. She gets in the car, but as he asks what they should do, Ha Ri is uninterested. She thinks and suggests that they go down to Hangang River and play speedminton. Trying to recreate her date with Sung Joon. Oppa asks if she feels like sweating, because there are many other ways to sweat it out besides that. And my skin crawls. He reaches over and touches her knee. She sighs, annoyed, and shoves him away. Why does he always take it there? Because you put up with it. He asks, irritated, why she’s being like this?

She asks him why he can’t just talk, eat and listen to music with her. He again asks why she’s suddenly like this? Indignant, she asks what she did! She turns on the radio and ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You’ comes on the radio. And it’s the actual version that Heath Ledger sang in ‘Ten Things I Hate About You.’ This makes her think of Sung Joon.

They stop at a light. Sung Joon walks across the cross walk. She tells Oppa that she’ll get off first and gets out of the car. She starts to hurry after him, calling his name, but he’s reading that tablet so he doesn’t hear her. She thinks of that conversation she had with Hye Jin where Hye Jin describes true love: you miss them and you're happy when you're with them. She thinks of them playing speedmitton and how she discovered that there is mouse for left-handed people. Which is a standard feature on the mouse, rather than a special one, where you can switch it depending on your hand preference. Hye Jin’s VO continues that  you want to do everything with them including things you didn't used to do. And you see them even from a distance.

Ha Ri can’t run fast enough, because of the shoes, and gets left behind. She looks down at her shoes and hears the salegirl say that even if she wants it now, it might hurt her later. Will she really be alright? Her eyes filling with tears, she says that she wanted to tell him the movie's name.

Later, one of the hotel workers finds the pretty shoes in the trash and wonders who would get rid of a perfectly good pair of shoes?

Shin Hyuk is on his bike, about to leave. Ha Ri greets him. He smiles warmly at her and waves as he greets her back. All business, she asks if he still owes her one, right? She’ll give him a chance to make them even. He asks what her favor is. She asks if he can help her, so that she won't be greedy for the wrong shoes anymore. He is understandably puzzled.

Now at work, Shin Hyuk declares that they should go eat something (lunch)! Joo Young asks Hye Jin to bring her a sandwich, since she has a meeting. Everyone is going to leave, but Hye Jin asks if they’re not going to invite him. He’d say ‘no’ anyway. Seol scoffs, asking if Hye Jin wants to get indigestion by eating with him? Poong Ho seconds that: At least while they eat, they should eat comfortably.

Seol is still trying to land Joon Woo as a boyfriend. Hye Jin is deep in thought, wondering if Sung Joon is eating properly. He doesn't have any friends in Korea so he probably doesn't even have anyone to eat with. Shin Hyuk notices.

Joon Woo brings up Sung Joon having a girlfriend. Hye Jin is shocked. Everyone else can’t believe it. With that personality? There're people who'd date him? It really doesn't make sense. Shin Hyuk notices Hye Jin’s discomfort. Joon Woo says that he saw them together on the weekend His girlfriend is a real beauty. Like totally gorgeous. Hye Jin… get a clue. To make Hye Jin feel better: Shin Hyuk counters that just because they were together doesn't mean that it's his girlfriend. He leans into Seol and gives her a kissy face, asking if that makes them a couple. She cringes away in disgust. Everyone takes the joke, but Hye Jin is still solemn.

Sung Joon is at the office library when Ha Ri calls. She asks if he has time tonight. She corrects herself and asks that, even if he doesn't have time, can he make some time for her?

Hye Jin goes to the coffee shop that Sung Joon likes to frequent and orders a sandwich. Then she changes her mind and orders two.

Seol is in the hallway, talking to a high school friend, who wants her to come to a reunion get together. Seol agrees, saying that, just like the previous weekend, she’ll get Hye Jin to do her work for her. She doesn’t notice Sung Joon walking up behind her and overhearing. His face is inscrutable. Entering the office, he notices Hye Jin leaving his office. When he enters, he sees the sandwich and juice that she brought him. He’s surprised. As he should be, since he’s been nothing but a jerk to her.

Seol brings over some work for Hye Jin to do. Sung Joon notices. She catches him looking in her direction so he blacks out the windows.

Shin Hyuk is deep in thought, thinking over his conversation with Ha Ri. She said that she’s asking for his help because she doesn't think she has the will to do it on her own. She asks him to pretend to be her fiancé later, in front of some guy. She doesn’t give him any other explanation. He looks bothered.

It’s now dark. Hye Jin is busy doing the work Seol gave her. Joon Woo announces that he’s leaving. Seol reminds Hye Jin that she needs to finish it all today and then hurries out after Joon Woo. Joo Young gets a call from someone and hurries to meet them downstairs. In her haste, she dumps over her coffee, which Hye Jin tells her to leave and that she will clean up. Joo Young hurries out. Sung Joon walks by as Hye Jin bothers her cut finger on the hot coffee. He sighs, uncomfortable. But more the discomfort over people taking advantage of her, rather than she’s an idiot. And they’re just following his lead. Although Joo Young wasn’t doing that.

Hye Jin notices him and stands, asking if he’s leaving. He swallows and looks away. When he looks back, he notices that her bandage has fallen loose. He asks if she runs a service center? He starts to ‘yell’ at her for taking care of everyone's problems, but stops himself, telling her “Never mind.” Then, to cover, he indignantly asks if she’s going to keep touching work items with those hands? She nervously notes that they're dirty and hides her hurt finger. He orders her to hurry up and wash those hands Then after she puts on a band-aid, do whatever she needs to do.

Hye Jin awkwardly starts to look around for a bandage. Sung Joon sighs with frustration, does a wrist grab and pulls her into the kitchen. He asks how she still doesn’t know where anything is yet? What is it that she does know? It’s more clucking than harsh, though. He slaps a bandage into her hand. She bows deeply and  starts to open it as she walks away. Of course, it’s difficult because of her finger. He sighs again and pulls her backward by her hoodie so that she’s standing next to him. He grabs the bandage out of her hand and opens it as she uncomfortably adjusts her hoodie and frowns. He yells at her for not knowing how to use a bandage. What's so hard about it that she can't do something so easy? She looks at the bandage. After a moment, he asks if she isn’t going to put it on.

Awkwardly, she pulls the old bandage off with her teeth and then applies the new bandage – also using her teeth. The ends stick together. She looks at him, nervous. He sighs and clucks at her again. If you do that, they stick to each other. Why are you using your mouth when you're putting on a band-aid? There's nothing you can do properly. Nothing. He’s actually being kind. It’s very weird. Hye Jin’s face says so, too. He tells her to take care of herself first and then, if she wants to do other people's chores, go ahead. Got it? He walks out of the kitchen and Hye Jin wonders why he’s nitpicking all of a sudden? Why did she even get him a sandwich? She kicks in his direction. Not realizing that this signals a change in Sung Joon’s attitude.

As Hye Jin leaves work, it is pouring rain. So strange these days.. It rains every time she comes out. She uses her hoodie to cover her head and runs into the rain.

Sung Joon is driving in the rain and passes an accident with someone being cut out of a car. A woman lies on the ground, bloody and unconscious. He stops his car, stunned. He thinks back to the accident that killed him Oma. She’s lying in the same spot and position as the woman. Sung Joon weeps, his shirt bloody, as Oma lies there, dead. In the present, Sung Joon has a major panic attack. People start to honk, but Sung Joon is freaking out. He tries to move his car, but he doesn’t get 10 feet when he swerves and stops, blocking traffic. Frantically, he claws loose from his seat belt and stumbles from his car, hyperventilating.

Hye Jin is riding on the bus, moaning about her huge hair. Someone on the bus notices Sung Joon, which gets Hye Jin to look out the window and see Sung Joon staggering across the street. He falls and gets honked at by a car.

Ha Ri nervously waits for Sung Joon to arrive. Shin Hyuk frowns and looks at his watch.

Sung Joon, in a daze, stumbles, arm outstretched, toward the accident, muttering Oma. Hye Jin stops him and asks what he’s doing. He’s unresponsive, transfixed on the accident. She sees it and realizes what’s wrong. Quickly, she pulls off her hoodie and uses it to shield both of them from the rain – like she did with her raincoat long ago. She tells Sung Joon not to look over there but to look over at her. Nothing will happen. It's okay. She keeps repeating herself. Slowly he looks over at her.

Waiting, Shin Hyuk blows bubbles in his drink. Ha Ri looks at her phone and sighs because Sung Joon hasn’t called.

As Sung Joon looks at Hye Jin and she tells him that it will be okay, he thinks of that day, long ago, in the rain when Hye Jin told him that from now on, she will be by his side. She will be his umbrella.

♫  Every time, you are near.♫
♫  Just like me, they long to be ♫

He reaches up and touches her face, saying her name. Hye Jin is shocked. Understandably.

Flashback of Sung Joon writing on his calendar.

♫  Why do stars fall down from the sky ♫

He draws an umbrella with it and smiles. [ The Left-hander's Day ]  [ First day I got a friend ]

She looks at him, stunned.

♫  Just like me, they long to be close to you.♫

She’s so stunned that she doesn’t hear the truck driving toward them, honking and flashing its lights.

Thoughts

I’m already predicting what’s going to happen when Sung Joon snaps out of it. He’s going to dismiss what happened and go back to being aloof from Hye Jin. She’s just going to accept that because she lacks confidence. And I will sigh with frustration.

One thing that’s complicating matters is Ha Ri. She’s fallen hard for Sung Joon (even though she’s still mostly in denial) and she’s perpetuating the myth that she’s his first love, Hye Jin. There are growing clues that contradict this, and I think the puzzle is going to be the key to her being busted, but it’s not going to be for a while (unfortunately).

I can’t tell where the writers are going with the four. As a romantic comedy, you know that love will happen, but between whom? Even though they did the whole ‘first-see-Sung Joon-then-see-Hye Jin’ which signals that they’re the OTP. But they’re developing these other relationships really well, to where it’s almost like the moral is not to fixate on first love but love the person you attract as a grown-up. I’m doubting that that’s the moral, though, because Hye Jin’s VO said that Shin Hyuk was going to be a major complication for Ha Ri in the future.

One thing that did surprise me – although I don’t think that it should – is how Sung Joon’s temperament towards Hye Jin is changing (given how I’ve compared it to episode 4 of ‘Warm and Cozy’). He’s definitely less harsh. Even when he was scolding her, it was more like how drama guys do when they like the girl but are still in denial. Not that I think Sung Joon likes her yet; it’s just that his heart recognizes her even while his head thinks that Ha Ri is Hye Jin.

I love Ha Ri and Hye Jin’s relationship and how Hye Jin’s family views Ha Ri as another daughter. I am not looking forward to when Hye Jin finds out what Ha Ri has been up to and has been lying about, because that’s what Ha Ri has been doing. I’m not looking forward to how that’s going to potentially damage their friendship. If Ha Ri had just been honest, instead of lying to everyone, including herself, then it wouldn’t hurt so much in the long run.

Hye Jin discovered Sung Joon’s secret – at least about the magazine. I wonder how long she’s going to keep the secret, though, and I can almost see someone else discovering it and Sung Joon blaming her for the leak.

I am also wondering when and what he eats. It’s interesting that Hye Jin and Shin Hyuk don’t care about the outside and Sung Joon and Ha Ri are sure that it’s the outside that’s going to make them attractive, which is why they are so obsessive about their weight. This is another reason why I think that those pairs won’t end up with each other, because you need someone who compliments you, not is like you, in the areas of your weaknesses. Sung Joon and Hye Jin are similar in many things, but they’re strengths rather than weaknesses. But how they handle painful things is different. Sung Joon and Ha Ri handle painful things the same, which is not good, but they’re different in many other things. And Ha Ri is starting to transform herself into what she thinks Sung Joon wants rather than realizing that a guy will like her just for who she is and not want to be her Oppa, but rather be her man. Which is why she’s going to end up with Shin Hyuk. He totally sees through her Oppa-charming ways, but likes her just being normal and enjoying ramen and not worrying about the calories.

Shin Hyuk’s save over the puzzle piece was hysterical, but it also shows that Shin Hyuk sees a lot and knows how to keep his mouth shut and looks like he knows nothing. It makes me wonder what else he’s seen and knows. And like I noted above, I am really starting to not like his fake smile that he puts on so no one knows how hurt he is. Ha Ri doesn’t think that he acts like a chaebol’s son, but I totally think so. He knows how to navigate people and can be super charming, like he’s been doing it since childhood, which I think would be essential when your every move is scrutinized and you’re held to a lofty standard. He also doesn’t see to worry very much about money, even though he often claims not to have any. If you’re poor, you don’t react to things like that; you stress about money.

It does make me wonder where the rift came with his family. Or if there is a rift, if he’s the Chairman’s son and Aunt Ra Ra seems to think they’re close. Maybe he’s just living in the hotel to scope out the magazine for his father. But I wonder if the rift came over the death of his dongsaeng, with Dad blaming him for something that wasn’t really his fault, and why he acts like nothing bothers him ever.
