Forty Seven.
Episode starts where we left off: Oma’s left home. Chae Won’s sought out Se Yoon and Se Yoon’s dropped the bomb that besides meetings for work, he hopes that they don’t run into each other. Then he turns to go inside work. Where I guess he has his job back because he didn’t marry her. She calls after him that she’s sorry. He doesn’t around. Tearfully, she says that she knew he would get hurt but she had no other choice. She couldn’t go through with the wedding once she heard Mom went to the hospital in an ambulance. Se Yoon sighs and states that it’s not that he doesn’t understand her feelings… He just hasn’t forgiven her yet. He’s too tired to go on now. Ouch! He was sure that he’d stay be her side until the end but he supposes that he overestimated himself. He turns around to face her. She’s crying. He sighs heavily and tells her that if Oma calls, he’ll contact her. Then he bows and leaves and Chae Won weeps.In his office, Se Yoon is staring. He tries calling Oma and gets a message. But he doesn’t leave one. Dad comes in, on a tear. Is their company a playground! Dad starts to bluster and Se Yoon sadly states that the marriage didn’t happen. And that Mom got rushed to the hospital from OD’ing on anti-anxiety medication, which Dad didn’t know about. Se Yoon asks Dad if he’ll reconcile with his wife if Se Yoon agrees to go to America. Wow, dude, get a clue at how sad your son, your wife is. Se Yoon declares that he’ll go as early as next week if Dad promises he’ll reconcile.
Oeharabeoji’s bedridden at Oma moving out. Oehalmeoni can’t believe it. No one knows how to find her and Appa is heartbroken and feeling like it’s his fault. Which it is. And we have to live through him yelling at her about being disappointed yet again. He cries and begs her to come back. I hate how he whines when he cries. The phone rings and it’s Oma. She apologizes for the shock but she won’t come back. She’s sacrificing herself for her children’s happiness. Appa whines, what about him! But Oma’s made up her mind; this way Se Yoon and Chae Won can get married. Appa whines about her not caring about him at all. But Oma won’t budge and after thanking him for giving her a family and a beautiful daughter like Chae Won, she hangs up. Then she turns off the phone so he can’t call her back. Oma leaves on a bus.
EMIL at the press conference where she announces the resignation of the entire executive board of the company. And I feel annoyed by the photographers. I’ve worked professionally doing these types of press conferences and you *don’t* need a flash. Or the zoom lenses that they were using. Not when they’re within 10 feet of the subject in a well-lit room. EMIL in her office after with Chul Kyu and Joo Ri. She’s pissed that her company is now in the hands of undeserving wretches! The kids feel bad. And I don’t feel bad at all. It’s karma. EMIL wants to know why she can’t see a booger in Atty Hong’s nose. News! His number is turned off. They rush over to his office. Security guard announces that Hong is gone. Yes! Hong took the money and fled the country! ALL their money.
EAIL goes and visits Mom. I guess they are friends. EAIL feels bad for the type of friend she’s been. And she makes me cry as she apologizes. Mom apologizes for being overly fussy, too. They hug and EAIL cries as Mom tells her thank you. I guess I like Mom a little now, now that she's not desperate. Mom asks about Oma and finds out that Oma ran away.
Oma arrives at her destination, the restaurant of another Unni. This one’s happy to see her. Oeharabeoji looks at the fabric and sadly thinks of Oma. And when Oehalmeoni comes in, he hides his death shroud. Oehalmeoni has a terrible toothache, so Oeharabeoji makes her go to the dentist. Oehalmeoni’s shocked that he’d spend the money, but he gives her a hard time. He holds her hand as the dentist works on her rotten molar.
Creditors are there to tells them to get out of the house. EMIL apparently sold it, too.
Opera Man’s radio appearance. He can’t help but break down. Oppa calls YAIL and invites her out to dinner. YUnc spots her getting gussied up and declares that she *is* cheating on him. He decides to follow her. Wearing sunglasses, because that automatically disguises you. Then he spies on the them through a newspaper. Oppa’s performing. I can’t tell if he’s lip synching his own music or someone else’s. Oppa wants to go someplace with him. It’s a jewelry store to get her opinion on some rings. YAIL practically falls over and he asks for the ring that YAIL picked. He offers to get her something, but she thinks that the ring’s enough. YUnc asks the jeweler what they looked at and after hearing the price, he looks worried.
Oehalmeoni and Oeharabeoji are walking after her tooth is fixed. And even though she just had major dental work, she’s not uncomfortable at all. She can’t believe he didn’t flinch over spending all that money. He tries to play it off as keeping her from getting dementia. As they’re ‘arguing,’ he’s struck with major stomach pain and collapses to the ground. He's rushed to the hospital.
Everyone rushes to the hospital and finally the news is out.
Dad visits Mom at the hospital. He says that he’s coming home and that Se Yoon’s going to leave for America. Mom declares that Se Yoon can’t leave until he marries Chae Won. Dad asks her if she’s in her right mind and she’s pissed that he would hold onto his greed until the end. Se Yoon arrives and Dad storms out. Mom begs him to so something else.
Oeharabeoji has his last words. He says that he’s dying happy because they’re taking over the noodle factory. Oeharabeoji makes Opera Man promise that he won’t die for the next 50 years. Lots of crying. Oeharabeoji asks to see Oma one more time before he dies.
Se Yoon’s finally left Oma a message. He tells her that she had suffering all her life and he can’t do that to her. If his marriage to Chae Won is born out of Oma’s suffering, it cannot be happy, so they’re going to break up. So she needs to go home to her family. She cries and declares that she can’t do that. She declares that even if it’s just this one thing she can do to protect his happiness, she’s going to do it.
EMIL is sitting on the floor of her empty home. You’re in the poor house now. And I’m not sorry at all to see her weeping on the floor. Chul Kyu declares that he’ll get it all back! They end up in a really small apartment in a poor neighborhood. EMIL stands outside and wails, calling attention to herself. Joo Ri wants her to stop but EMIL screams at her. The mover declares that their stuff *isn’t* going to fit in their new place. EMIL yells at him and throws a fit.
The company. Chae Won runs into Se Yoon and Asst Yoon. Asst Yoon is really happy to see her. Se Yoon says nothing. Asst Yoon mentions Se Yoon’s going away party, which is how she gets the news. He doesn’t even say anything to her but excuses himself to go to another meeting. Asst Yoon can’t believe she didn’t know and Chae Won knows that it’s *really* over.
Mom’s leaving the hospital with Se Yoon there to take her home. Mom asks if he’s heard from Oma. Phone call: Oeharabeoji. He tells Se Yoon that he’s never thought of any other man for Chae Won but him. He’s asking Se Yoon for the last time to take responsibility for her, so he can die at peace.
Oma’s working on food for the café and thinking about Appa and Oeharabeoji being sick. She wants to go home but can’t.
YAIL enters their room to find YUnc discouraged about losing his dad. He feels bad about failing Oeharabeoji so often. He starts to cry and adds that it’s a relief that Oeharabeoji’s not going to know that they’re divorced. He tells her that he’ll decide in the near future.
Oeharabeoji’s requesting they take a family picture. Wow, depress me now.
Chae Won and Se Yoon see each other. She tries to walk by, since it’s over – by his design – and he stops her by saying her name. He tells her that if she says “don’t go,” he won’t leave. Arg! He is being so unfair! Should he not go? She tells him “I’m sorry” and walks away. They both cry.
Family picture and the only one who’s smiling is Oeharabeoji. Oeharabeoji has Appa sit next to him and hold his hand. He thanks Appa and tells him that he isn’t his son-in-law but his son. And I am blubbering now.
Blubbering continues because now it’s the funeral. It’s a really nice picture of Oeharabeoji. For the funeral, everyone is serving the mourners noodles while Oeharabeoji narrates that noodles create memories and comfort us. Their last assignment: for the mourners, create the most delicious noodles in the world.
Chul Kyu arrives at the funeral. He asks her to comfort him; they’re homeless and bankrupt. If she gives him some encouragement, he’ll have the strength to go on. She tells him that he’s strong and he’ll overcome. He thanks her and grabs her into a hug. And Se Yoon arrives as Chae Won shoves him off.
Forty Eight.
Chul Kyu hugs Chae Won. She shoves him off as Se Yoon arrives. He looks pained but doesn’t say anything, just walks past them. Chul Kyu notices the coldness and asks if they’ve had a fight. She doesn’t answer.Inside, Se Yoon is bowing in respect. YUnc announces that Se Yoon is there. And they’re going to make me cry this episode, too. EUnc aigoo’s that Oeharabeoji said there was no grandson like Se Yoon. Se Yoon apologizes for coming so late. Appa thanks him for coming. Chul Kyu enters and after seeing Oeharabeoji’s picture, he breaks down. YUnc wants Chul Kyu to leave but EUnc tells him to leave Chul Kyu be. Chul Kyu weeps hard, making everyone cry. Appa asks Se Yoon for a chat.
Outside, Appa talks to Se Yoon. Appa says that Se Yoon should be staying to help Mom since they’re both his mother. Se Yoon asks if Appa’s heard from Oma, but she didn’t answer the letter he sent. Se Yoon says that he’s leaving for America. Appa asks if Chae Won knows. Se Yoon nods and says that he was hoping she would tell him not to go, but she didn’t move a muscle. Get to work, Appa!
Outside, Se Yoon tells Chae Won he’s going. She tells him to be well. There’s an obvious longing between both of them, but they’re both too prideful to break. Se Yoon mentions that this might be the last time the see each other, so he’s say his goodbye in advance. She should stay healthy. She can barely tell him to do the same and won’t look at him as she starts to cry. Chul Kyu overhears. Please don’t tell me he’s going to try and get her back. Chul Kyu approaches her and mentions it. He declares that he’s a new man. She walks in the house.
Oehalmeoni is feeling bad about all the times she scolded Oeharabeoji, when he was so sick. She is killing me! The family comes and comforts her.
EMIL being obnoxious with her neighbor. Neighbor doesn’t cower and gives it right back, so EMIL grabs her hair. Chul Kyu has to break it up. EMIL proclaims that they’re lowly and not like her! Even though she used to be a thug moneylender.
Se Yoon’s back from the funeral and Mom’s worried about how Oma’s doing. She asks about Chae Won and Se Yoon just says that he’s going up to bed. Mom knows that she has to fix this. Oma’s in her room crying because Oeharabeoji died. She wants to go to the funeral, but can’t because of the kids. And I’m crying again.
Funeral procession. It’s pretty cool, even though I am *crying.* Appa leads the procession, carrying Oeharabeoji’s portrait. They tour the noodle factory and think of Oeharabeoji. Then they walk his body to the cemetery. Oma is following at a distance, weeping. Oehalmeoni is distraught. They’re going to do the dirt, but instead Chae Won’s brought noodles. Appa weeps that Oeharabeoji’s making noodles now for people in heaven. They all ask him to leave well.
After the funeral is over, Appa spots Oma. She scurries off, but he follows her. They talk. He calls her cruel. Didn’t she worry about him? Of course she did, but she had no other choice. She asks him what she should do. Her children are crying blood. Appa declares that he's not going back home alone. She declares that she won’t change her mind.
Mom’s at home, talking to Dad, explaining how Oma divorced Appa so Se Yoon and Chae Won could marry. She’s trying to get Dad to relent. She declares that 30 years ago, she killed Oma, but this time *he’s* doing it. the kids aren’t even related by blood, so he needs to give his consent! He declares that with his logic and values, it is impossible! Then he gets mad when she points out that it’s because of him that there's no marriage for Se Yoon or Oma. He yells at her again; how dare she blame him! She storms off and slams the door.
Se Yoon is packing his office. Joo Ri arrives. They go out to the balcony to talk. She’s come to apologize. He tells her that they should start over.
EMIL’s trying to find Atty Hong but doesn’t have money to hire an investigator. Neighbor lady comes by to yell at them about their trash and EMIL attacks her again. Further EMIL moaning.
Auntie tells YUnc to pay more attention to YAIL because of Oppa. YUnc realizes that he's no match for Oppa. He finds YAIL and tells her that she’s a good woman, and she can go when she pleases. After the family finds out that Opera Man’s radio appearance went viral, Oppa calls Opera Man to say he’s got another radio spot scheduled.
Appa is leaving, but he’s coming back the next day and the next until she changes her mind!
Se Yoon is packing one small suitcase to leave for America. He sees a picture from wedding dress shopping. Sad face.
EMIL is trying to see her purses and jewelry to the match maker. Match maker finds it very amusing. Matchmaker asks if EMIL’s kept in contact with Hong Joo and tries to bring up her being pregnant, but EMIL kicks her out.
Chul Kyu gets a job as a driver.
Se Yoon is in jeans and a t-shirt. The most casual I’ve ever seen him. It's a good look for him, too. He's calling someone. Oma. He gets her voicemail and asks to see her before he leaves. This time when he leaves for America, he doesn’t have any thoughts of coming back. Oma gets the message and is shocked. And she has a visitor. Appa, who is now changing a light bulb for them. She wants to know why he’s there and he says that he’s going to come back every day. Oma asks him about Se Yoon leaving and if Chae Won is going with him. Appa says no. And then adds that Se Yoon wants Chae Won to go with him, but she’s not listening. That’s not how I heard their conversation. Dad’s still disapproving.
Oma hears that and immediately calls Mom. She declares that this isn’t right. Mom says that the boys are being stubborn. Oma wants to know why Mom’s letting Se Yoon leave *alone*. Mom explains that one and Oma bitterly asks what she’s done all of it for. Mom wants to meet with her. Oma declares that if Se Yoon is leaving, Chae Won’s going with him. She tell Mom to tell Dad that if he doesn’t relent, then she’s going to put Se Yoon on her family register! Oma hangs up and Dad gets the news. Dad’s still stubborn. Mom tells him she agrees with Oma. If he doesn’t accept the kids, she will go to the police and turn herself in for stealing Se Yoon. The news will be fatal for him who seems to care about fame and honor more than his family. Tense stare-off.
Oehalmeoni at home in bed. The sibs come in and encourage her.
Oppa calls YAIL and asks her to join him on a very special day for him. She readily agrees, thinking that he’s going to propose. Even though he has a though about YUnc. YUnc encourages her to wear the pretty orange dress to meet her ‘friends.’ He’s acting strange.
Back at the café, Oppa’s lip synching again. This time he waves and the music doesn’t stop. YAIL’s sure he’s going to propose but now she’s not sure what she’d say. YUnc’s sitting in the distance watching. Oppa takes out the rings. YAIL reaches for them and he snatches them away. And at that moment, Oppa! Oppa’s *fiancée* shows up. Oppa wanted YAIL there for the proposal. YAIL is put out (and so is YUnc). YAIL asks Oppa how many first loves he has, since he’s calling this girlfriend his first love, too. Oppa replies that all love is first love. Where’s the water?! YUnc appears and starts yelling at Oppa. And it’s why I love YUnc, because he’s passionate. Punch him, please! He calls Oppa a jerk and asks if Oppa just played around with his wife?! Oppa’s confused. And YUnc punches him!
Se Yoon’s got his ONE suitcase – when I left for Brussels for 4 months I had *two* suitcases that were much bigger and Se Yoon’s leaving for America for good. I guess he only needs one suit. That’s about how big that suitcase is. He’s saying his goodbyes to Mom. She wants him to eat dinner first, but he’s going to meet his Hyung. Dad’s not relenting. Mom hugs him tightly and cries. And finally, I think Dad is feeling badly. Se Yoon gets into the taxi. Appa calls him and tells him where Oma is. Se Yoon changes his route, after all, it’s a 940 flight.
Mom meets Chae Won at the café and gives her a ticket for Se Yoon’s flight. Mom declares that she’ll take care of everything, Chae Won just needs to close her eyes and leave.
Rain on the way to visit Oma. And I have this feeling that a car accident is coming, especially because Se Yoon’s taxi’s driving in the rain.
Chae Won decides to take the ticket and leave with Se Yoon.
Big semi swerves into the taxi’s lane and they crash. Se Yoon’s now unconscious. At least it wasn’t the driver’s fault. And I don’t see a single airbag.
Chae Won’s at the airport.
Se Yoon is unconscious at the hospital. A neurosurgeon is called. Defibrillator is called for. And even though it’s a dramatic scene, I can’t help but laugh when the doctor calls out ‘Shock!’ instead of ‘Clear!’ because it sounds like ‘Shook!’
Chae Won’s waiting at the airport; she leaves a message for Se Yoon that she’s at the airport. Not that she’s there to join him.
Se Yoon’s hand flops and his heart stops. And he’s not dead. But it sure is dramatic.
